The Best Bars in Athens | Eater Atlanta

"The Globe is the kind of place where professors, poets, and cocktail lovers all rub elbows. After a recent renovation, the space feels fresh while keeping the wood-paneled English pub charm that’s made it a local favorite since 1989. As the first bar in Athens to serve Guinness, the Globe has an impressive roster of imported beers on tap and by the bottle, ranging from German pilsners to Russian imperial stouts. A small but creative cocktail selection leans classic with a twist — think a spiced pear old-fashioned and gin sippers kissed with scotch. A menu of hearty pub fare helps sop up those spirits, so you can keep on debating your thesis over a pint of Strongbow." - Sarah Bisacca

Came here on a Saturday at around 11:45 am. There were no issues getting a table. We had a party of 5, but it seems like most of the tables are for two to four people. We were able to pull up a chair to our table for four. The tables in general seemed a bit small. The food was very good! They had some really good typical pub dishes like meatloaf, shepherd's pie, fish and chips, some great burger choices as well! We also had some really good appetizers. The service was excellent. Our server was very open about what dishes he liked and didn't like. Made some great recommendations! I definitely recommend giving this place a try.

Google
Globe chips and pretzel bites were good. Good tea. The Reuben was a little thin (very little meat and 1000 island) and bland. Turkey club was great. Tomato soup was excellent. The fried fish was not fresh and under-seasoned. Chips were ok. So a little good and a little bad. Around 100$.

The food was good. I had the Lebanese bowl. I'd hoped to get fish, but the menu was out of date. The cocktails were okay, but this bar was so loud and crowded that I couldn't hear myself think. It's probably fine when it's not busy, but it was super busy when we were there.

Google
It was a nice atmosphere and the food was pretty good. They had an Irish band playing, it was a good time. I had the black bean burger which was very tasty.

Google
Large selection of beer, multiple drink combinations, and the regular favorites in a very pub style environment that most of the world need

Google
Excellent food! Not your typical bar food. Great bartender. He was very attentive and told me about the wall art they have hanging up.

Google
The food is not to my taste. In my opinion, it was tasteless and had no special taste. The service was good and upon entering, they welcomed the customer with a glass of water and ice. The atmosphere of the bar and restaurant was great and relaxing and dynamic at the same time. Meanwhile, I left my water bottle and came back tomorrow and they kept it for me. The staff were kind, warm and polite

Google
What a great find. The young man at the Tai resturant on the same block suggested it because they were not open yet. Our waiter Charlie was the best. Everything he suggestions were on point. The tofu Nashville hot sandwich was amazing. And the green beans were yummy and delicious. Can’t wait to visit Athens again and go back.

Yelp
In a town of many drinking establishments, The Globe has got to be in the top three, if not even higher. We were in town to see a couple of Drive By Truckers shows and were staying downtown and not driving so had some time for day drinking. We sat at the bar for a few hours sampling the current beers on tap. And there were quite a few good ones. I am not going to go through them all because if you go here in six months the lineup will change. When you order a beer here at the bar you get a good pour in an appropriate glass. Cannot ask for more than that. We were only drinking, not eating, so I don't have anything to say about the food. Last year I went to Atheist and saw a couple shows upstairs. Mike Mills was there too.

Yelp
Great service, food and drinks all around. The Irish band playing was lovely too. We will be back!

Yelp
It has a real English pub vibe. Service was decent, although I did feel like checks were a bit rushed and they weren't even busy. We were planning on hanging out for a bit to catch up with friends, but our server offered the check right after we finished dinner so we moved onto another bar. There are some mixed emotions on food by other reviewers but I thought it was great! The pretzels were bite sized and had great texture-- slightly crisp on the outside and pillowy on the inside. I got the Clayton St. Hot Curry sandwich and it was amazing-- a curry fried chicken (or tofu) sandwich with a mint yogurt. Got it with fried okra because I'm a Californian visiting the south. Would come again!

Yelp
Food, service and ambiance were on point. We truly enjoyed it all. The drinks were delicious.

Yelp
Fun crowded pub feel, great selection of beers, and multiple options for non-meat eaters. Our server was busy but did a great job keeping an eye out for us. If we're in Athens again, we'll be back!

Yelp
Went for dinner and was so impressed. Service, food and drinks were top notch!!! We will for sure be back.

Yelp
They were slow when I got there.....the dark tavern type atmosphere was exactly what my soul was in need of. Waitress whipped up an incredible margarita (or 2) and I had the best Reuben I have ever had in my life. Don't stop what you are doing Globe. You guys nailed my experience. My waitress was friggin awesome. Wish I could give you more stars. The guy that was cleaning up even got me with (what felt like) an authentic "Right on". There was some power in that. I don't know if it was the margaritas or what but that place feels like it speaks to souls. Get that sammich. You won't regret it.**** **** Disclaimer: No guarantees that the doctor that made my sammich will be working when you getcho sammich.

Yelp
3.5 stars, but still my go-to. Here's why: like many places, they closed during Covid, taking the opportunity to renovate and update things. The upstairs? Fantastic, though they only open it on select nights, likely due to a staff shortage. The vibe is still great, the drinks still solid. The food, however, is a shadow of its former self--like it gave up on trying and just settled for existing. As for the staff, they've moved on from their trademark cool indifference to something closer to outright disdain, which, honestly, feels reflected in the food. You can taste the apathy. Still, I keep going back. Maybe out of loyalty. I've seen this happen just down the street at Trappeze, which used to be fantastic, and now serves brown pastrami.

Yelp
The Globe is one of the numerous good places in downtown Athens. It can get very busy on a Friday or a Saturday night, but it wasn't when we went on a Sunday night. Mind you, lots of places in Athens are closed on Sunday, which made the Globe a welcome option for dinner and drinks. Food wise, the best label I can give you is gastro pub. We both chose the Guinness battered fish and chips. I have a problematic relationship with fish and chips. Most of the time I order it, I wish I'd ordered something else. I was not disappointed with fish and chips here, though. I ordered the one piece because I was not super hungry. It was very good. The chips likewise were very good. They were the best fries I've had in Athens hands down. It's full bar with an extensive selection of beers and a very good selection of bourbon and other spirits. The service was good. I have no complaints. The decor and atmosphere is much like what you might to expect of an upscale British pub, but that's just my take on it. We enjoyed our meal and our time there. Cheers!

Yelp
Wanted to try out some local downtown Athens restaurants and decided to start with the globe one Friday evening. We came a bit early (around 430) so were there ahead of any Friday evening rush and were seated immediately. We ordered a whiskey sour which was well made. For food I got the Mellow Gold Chicken Sandwich. It was wonderful with nicely fried chicken thigh and a fantastic honey mustard on top. The sandwich came with their hand cut potato wedge style fries which would have been AMAZING had they not been over cooked slightly. That knocked them down a bit but they were still edible and good and I saw the potential for how good they would have been had they been cooked properly. Overall, this was a great experience. The service was solid, food and drink tasty and the vibe inside the restaurant is very nicely laid back and relaxed in a positive way. I would certainly return again.

Yelp
Good pub food. Good beer selection. The pretzels and beer cheese are fantastic as well.

Yelp
Delightful-everything was lovely. We had the Reuben and fish & chips, iced tea & organic stevia was perfect. Ambience is on point, service with Jake, charming.

Yelp
Love it here. Would be better if they served chocolate chip cookies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yelp
Opening day. Longest wait ever for our $10 Ploughman's plate and $7.50 cold onion rings. When we finally got our entrees, everything was cold. Portions were tiny (just look at the fries - there were like 5 of them). The place wasn't packed by any means. What a bummer. I don't leave many bad reviews and I was really trying to find something positive about the experience but overall the food, service, and price were just disappointing.

Yelp
Walking around downtown, we wanted to try a new place and The Globe was a block away. The menu is VERY BASIC, but the drink selections and beers were good. I ordered the Ruban and side salad. My spouse ordered the Diner Burger (basically two sliders dressed up). The burger were well done, almost crispy. The Ruban was very good, a great balance of beef and extras. The price point is high for what you get for food, but the drink pricing is fair. We would return, but hoping for a better menu.

Yelp
Casual, pub food, selection of draft beers, week-day specials and Sunday brunch with limited menu. Food 3/5 Meatloaf, Reuben, Fish and chips, club sandwich and and fried chicken are ok with southern -kitchen -type choice of sides (like mashed potatoes, bland broccoli casserole , Lima beans, fried okra, etc. mostly marginal ,) ** Location 3/5 downtown close to the university BUT parking is limited or park on street with meters. Facility 3/5 remodeled old city building, kept to pub theme Upstairs has band sometimes Price. 3/5. Consistent with local restaurants ** only one dessert -lava cake -a little steep at $7.50

Yelp
Appetizers were ok but the entrée selection is small and lack of diversity. I sent back my entrée, I don't do it often however it seemed low quality and not very tasty. If you are looking for a good restaurant w/ similar cuisine I'd recommend Trappeze Pub

Cameron F.

Yelp
Do not bother eating here. The food is very average, it takes forever to get your food even when it's empty, and the staff arnt friendly nor helpful. I wanted to order their diner burger with only cheese, to which they said that I must order the burger with everything on it or not order it at all. What kind of pointless rule is this? They said it's tradition that the burger comes with everything and so you can't order it any other way. What is the tradition exactly? Their tradition is to not let their customers order their food how they want? What if I had an allergy to one of the toppings? On top of their ridiculous rules, we were the only ones eating there and the food took ages to come out. Overall, it was an absolutely terrible experience and I advise everyone to stay away from this place. There are much better options in downtown.

Yelp
Hands down the best fish and chips in Athens and they also have a fantastic international beer selection. I highly recommend this place!!!

Yelp
Started out great, and getting better with age.

Yelp
Overall, food is fine. Service...well there are 5 employees "working" while 4 of the 5 have friends present socializing and one gentleman working. The one gentleman working is trying his best, but has had to apologize to several customers during our short stay about "sorry for the wait" or "our fryer stopped working so we have to re-do your food" etc. It's just not a great look when the staff is also eating at the bar with only one person actually working as well as one of the employees taking a shot with his friend at the bar. Would not recommend based on service alone.

Peter R.

Yelp
Normally love the soups, but the borscht was not borscht. All other soups and food are great. Borscht is purple. Not brownish. Again, I love the Globe but was disappointed with the borscht. Btw front of house staff is awesome.

Yelp
The food is very good but my last visit a week ago did not seem like the Globe of old now in all fairness it was during lunch but the atmosphere just wasn't the same as it was years ago even at lunch. The service however was good not very friendly or easy to understand but thorough and timely.

Randall G.

Yelp
The service was fantastic. The Reuben was very good and I loved the fries...thick cut skin on. Whiskey and beer were great. Atmosphere is a pretty good old school pub. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Becky K.

Yelp
Great experience. Wonderful beer selection. Strong gin & tonic. Great bartenders. Will absolutely come again.
google avatar

Laura S.

Yelp
Cool place, but service was mediocre at best. Went on a saturday had Reuben sandwich, fish and chips, burger, and two apps. All was pretty good, but pretzel bites came out burnt and crispy. We had waited at least 30 min so we were hungry and ate them. Food was warm-ish, not hot. Had to ask for more drinks and it wasn't that busy. Would go back, but hope for better service.

Yelp
I've been to the Globe several times now since it reopened and have had a consistently great experience. Everything I've tasted on the menu has been very good. But for me the standout is the reuben. Indeed, it's one of Athens' great culinary secrets -- far-and-away the best in Athens. The corned beef is made in-house and is moist, tender, and delicious. As far as I know, the Globe the only restaurant in town that makes its own corned beef these days. It's thicker and looser than east-coast deli style corn beef (and is very similar to the corned beef at General Muir's in Atlanta), but it's delicious.

Yelp
This was a cozy little bar. They have a great selection of beer and their food menu is solid as well. The blue cheese chips are great and so is the Reuben! Nice staff too.

Yelp
This is the Globe's Renaissance! I can't imagine a better eating experience. Menu is so great and changes every time I come here which I love! The waitstaff was all so accommodating, and I got to meet the chef who made my sandwich! His name was Colin and he was a real cutie AND made a killer wich- the whole package! Everyone come out and try the Globe- you'll feel like you travelled the Globe and now you're in the UK!

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and come here for your own experience! Whether it's for lunch/dinner or to enjoy the bar for drinks. You won't be sorry. This is an older Athens establishment that has stayed true to its wonderful nature through the years. I brought my family here while visiting our hometown for the first time since its post-pandemic reopening. The experience was so good that we came back again shortly after to experience more of their menu. If you love a cozy yet slightly refined pub-style aesthetic with an old-world feel, this is the place. The menu is smaller than most establishments, but I can't speak positively enough about it being QUALITY over quantity. Both meals that my family and I had were phenomenal; enough so that even our young children desired to come back again. The portions are super appropriate; enough that you feel well fed without overdoing it and wasting food. The drink selection is awesome as well! They have an excellent selection of quality imports. Not every drink is on the menu, but if you ask the staff they can guide you to their broader selection. In summary: amazing food, amazing drinks, awesome staff, awesome establishment.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I went to The Globe and our thoughts are a little bit spread. Our waitress was nice but we weren't really a priority for her at all. We were told when we wanted our burgers medium rare that we could only pick between pink or no pink. We both said pink but it came out well done. However, our food was very good at the end of the day. The atmosphere is also very cool.

Yelp
DO NOT WASTE your time or money. Pass the Globe, don't collect your $200 dollars, and head straight to Dooley's if you want a pleasant and delicious dining experience with great prices. While the food at the Globe is pretty great, you'll only know if you can manage to get someone to take your order and get it right. I have been there for food at least 6 times. The service is always questionable at best, but tonight it was just an epic fail. IMPORTANT NOTE: RYAN THE BARELY BARTENDER IS THE MOST FOUL, UNGRACIOUS PERSON I HAVE EVET MET. It was a Sunday night in June, so just a few scattered customers, but it still took 10 minutes for Tim, the BARELY BETTER THAN RYAN bartender, to even take notice of us, and we were seated at the center of the bar, in full view. Then it took 40 minutes to get a basket of fries, and an hour for our food because they "misplaced the ticket" for one hamburger. Didn't bother to tell us, while the rest of our order sat in bags for 40 minutes getting cold. I finally asked what was taking so long and was informed about the order screw up. Then we had to wait another 10 minutes to get our drink bill, which finally arrived with 3 extra cocktails charged. When I told RYAN THE FOUL that we were overcharged, he became immediately rude and offensive, saying "this is for the REST of your drinks!" When I told him he had charged us already on the food tab, he sneered and walked away and got Tim. It then took Tim TWO attempts to correct the bill, when all he had to do was take off the 3 extra drinks. By the time we got the bill for that, our food had been sitting for an hour. We got home and everything we ordered was soggy. And we ordered $200 worth of food. When I called to complain, Ryan hung up on me. So I walked back over and explained in person that all the food was soggy and Tim was not apologetic at all, but in fact responded with irritation and disrespect. I WILL NEVER go back. The only person there who is decent is the hostess Andy, but that poor girl can't possibly carry the weight of her coworker's incompetence and ill-mannered attitudes. They also shorted us a chicken strip, at $3 a strip. TWO FORKS WAY DOWN!

Yelp
We stopped by The Globe for dinner on a fall, non-football Saturday in downtown Athens. Downtown was hopping with UGA students out and about. Nearby Last Resort Grill had a 30-minute wait. The Globe was busy, but had no wait. The restaurant is located on the corner of N. Lumpkin St. and W. Clayton St. It's got a small enclosed outdoor sidewalk patio which is great for people watching. After a certain time, I want to say 10 or 11pm, the restaurant begins carding and is only open to age 21+ only. I think that's how the other downtown bars operate too. The Globe is modeled after a traditional European pub. Lots of dark woods throughout and at night, it's candlelit. The bar itself looks cool and the menu touts "80 beers, 66 wines, and 38 single malts." The food menu consists of typical pub grub. A few of the non-typical bar foods include tandoori chicken (salad or sandwich) and a croque monsieur (French sandwich). Prices are affordable as most entrees are under $10 each. There are also daily food and drink specials. I tried the night's blackboard special, a jalapeno pepperjack burger, as well as the Alpine burger. Both burgers were $9.49 each and utilitized 6-ounce beef patties. The jalapeno pepperjack burger consisted of melted pepperjack cheese, lettuce, tomato, and red onion. The cheese was melted over some other ingredients, which I presume to have been the jalapenos. The burger was mildly spicy. I would've preferred more heat because I like spicy food. The Alpine burger had three strips of bacon laid over the beef patty with sauteed mushrooms and melted Swiss cheese on top. It also came with lettuce, tomato, and red onion. Both burgers were OK. Not very memorable, but not bad either. Both burgers came with a pickle spear and a side. I chose a side salad which included mixed greens, shredded carrots, sliced green bell pepper, and chopped tomato. It was fine. My tablemates ordered some of the standard-sized entrees including chicken penne with garlic cream sauce and the fish and chips. The portion sizes were quite big for these dishes and they both looked appetizing. The folks who ate these dishes seemed pretty pleased, so I would go as far as to recommend them. The fish and chips looked particularly filling and appetizing and I wish I had gone that route. Service was good. We parked at metered parking one block east on N. Lumpkin St. It was $0.75/hour. A good deal when compared to Atlanta. I was told parking is free after 10pm and is free all-day on Sunday.

Yelp
Overpriced. Worst service. Took two years to open and they are extremely unorganized. Hired the wrong people. Go somewhere else

Anne C.

Yelp
The tall girl that has glasses and a brown ponytail was the worst person I ever had be a server. Apparently she was shift lead? Would couldn't even respect us? I get if you are going through something, but taking it out on strangers who have done nothing but been polite is rude and unprofessional. Would not even speak to us. She literally would not let us ask her questions. Asked how long it would take and she cut me off. Food took an hour because of new chefs in the back (I've been a server so I know all the lies). She was literally the rudest person I have ever met

Yelp
While I did not eat here, I did do some day drinking here and it was lovely. Whiskey/vodka sodas are $4 and well worth it. Luckily my friend and I snagged an outside seat and it was the cremè de la cremè for people watching. The streets (and this place) was bustling. Our server was attentive and kind. Would definitely go back and eat as the menu looked pretty good as well!
google avatar

Yelp
Who knew the Globe had good food. Over the years I have been enjoying their great beer selection and cocktails, but never ate here. A group of five got in fairly quickly on a Saturday night. We had the Globe chips with blue cheese for a starter. Delicious! Chips are freshly made and a lot blue cheese crumbles with the melted cheese. This was enough for the five adults. We ordered sandwiches, club and burgers, and everyone thought there were very good. One person ordered the Globe nachos which could have easily fed two people. The only reason for four stars was the service. Our waiter also doubled as a bartender. He was good when he could come around. We will definitely put this in our downtown restaurant options going forward. Might just stop by for Globe chips and a beer.
google avatar

Tiff H.

Yelp
The Globe reminds me of all things Shakespearean and wonderful. Well, at least the name and the downstairs bar area. I ordered a beer - Leffe Blonde for $4 (woohoo!) and we made our way upstairs toward the sounds of the crashing music. There were maybe 10 people upstairs, chilling and listening to the band. A few were seated on the plush couches, while others stood around moving to the music. A bartender was tending to the bar upstairs, although the beverage selection seemed smaller. We stood around for a bit, listening to the music and nursing our beers before heading to our next stop. This is definitely not the most rocking place in terms of number of people, but for the price point and the chill factor, it's got my vote for a mellow break in the bar hop.

Yelp
I was told that the hip crowd and many students from UGA come here to hang out. I drove here to Athens, GA from metro Atlanta, which was a surprising 90 minutes drive . I didn't realize this when google maps told me how far of a drive it was. Ugh, oh well. The Globe restaurant and Grill is one of those restaurants in downtown Athens GA that can be characterized as being those places that's just an interesting place to be. The ambiance was subtle and casual, but a little bit noisy and a bit difficult to see, since it was kind of dim lit and quite the meal that I might have been something different, but I took it all in stride, since I was meeting a friend here, who lived here in Athens. I arrived here around 6pm after killing time in and around Athens and walking around the campus of UGA about half hour before dinner. The restaurant was kind of empty and we got seated right away. It was just three of us and we got seated on the floor next to the entrance. We must've spent about an hour or so here before we left. The service year was pretty good and not the best, but it was OK and average. Well, the ambience was just all right but loud the overall experience here was decently good and I had a good time with meeting friends for dinner here in Athens, Georgia. Te restaurant was small, but cozy at the same time. I ordered a salad that seemed appropriate at the time. Lol During my drive back to Stone Mountain, GA afterwards, I made a stop at a Bojangles and had fun thereafter. The Globe restaurant and Grill is located at 199 N Lumpkin Street here in downtown Athens, GA. The university of Georgia flagship campus is about a minute walk from this restaurant, so I bet a lot of students and faculty dine here from time to time. They accept credit cards, which is always nice and appropriate, as well as cash. The parking here kind of sucks and really is limited. Since I was here on a Monday evening, I got lucky with metered parking up the street. The meter itself accepted credit cards, so that's always a good thing. Thankful for the local government to install parking meters that does that. The prices here can be a little pricey, as worth many of them out there, but truth be told, I was on vacation and didn't really think twice about it. Just wanted to have a good time with friends and company. The salad itself was good. I think it was the appropriate meal to sink myself into. I thought the salad was delicious and I had just water to drink, considering that I had to drive about an hour west to Stone Mountain. While I would have ordered something else, I thought about watching what I eat and not be crazy about calorie watching, I just settled on eating what a friend of mine ate, and that's perfectly fine. The company was good and it was the perfect cap to a whirlwind tour of Atlanta for 24 hours, since the next morning, I was out of Atlanta bounded for Tampa, FL on Delta airlines. I wouldn't have traded this time for anything. My friend, also a frequent marathoner like myself, hails from Athens, GA inspires me to keep going and going strong. Definitely quite nice to hang out with her and her non running husband on this evening of October 24, 2016. He actually travels with her to her races and provides that much needed support. It's awesome. If you are in the area, please come check this place out. This place is good for lunch and dinner. While I did have just the salad, there's other delightful dishes to try out. Please have a beer for me. I'd recommend this place for a good casual meal with friends or family. Or both. 4.0 stars for the entire experience. 3.5 stars for the ambiance and the service. 4.0 stars for the food. Thought it was delicious, yet satisfying for the moment, even if I did make a stop at Bojangles afterwards. :) It'll be worth your while to come here and check things out. Support local! B-

Yelp
Really solid fish and chips. Crowd's a little old, but that's not the establishment's fault (and possibly could be sought out for). Captures the UK theme genuinely, subtly, and without excess. Sláinte!

Yelp
We hit up this place last night for a couple rounds of drinks after dinner. It served its purpose. There's a wide variety of beers on tap and in bottle, as well as wine by the glass and bottle, and a big selection of scotch. Head up to the bar and you'll see it's full, as well. I got a a top shelf gin and soda for $10 including tip. That seems like a good deal, but it was stupidly light on the booze. If you're just ordering drinks, it's one of those walk up to the bar and pay places, which was fine. They were cool with our group of 5 just hanging out for a couple hours, and why shouldn't they be? The place wasn't even half-full. I'm sure Athens has better places.

Patricia A.

Yelp
Long wait for food - 1 hour. They ran out of food, but to be fair it was their 2nd day open. The food was good and hopefully the wait for food improves.

Yelp
Hip spot right in downtown Athens. The Globe offers classic American pub fare with a touch of UK. The fish and chips are always a solid choice! My most recent visit, I did the twin burgers, done in 50's diner style fashion, two small patties with cheese, mustard, chopped onion. Right on point! The Globe has an amazing selection of Scotch Whisky and craft beers to go with your meal. Finish off your evening with a slice of chocolate lava cake!

Carter W.

Yelp
So glad the globe is finally open again. Great food, great selection of beers, beautiful interior. Would recommend to anyone. Also the only place I've found around here that has Harp Irish Lager

Yelp
I dont know who could have possibly given low scores to what is the greatest bar in the United States. My wife and I had our first date here 15 years ago, it is an Athens institution...a place for happy hour which draws pretty much anyone in the know about Athens...journalists, politicians, etc etc. It is also a hipster hangout, a graduate student and professor hang out, and it has fantastic wines, beers, scotches. I used to have a beer, read my class material, and sit in the rocking chairs in the front. sorry, but the Globe is not a place you just dive in for a drink and leave. It is a place to wade into and spend many many many days...months in...years in.

Yelp
I've eaten at the Globe plenty of times, and I have to say that it's definitely one of my Athens favorites. I think that they are especially good for lunch. The sandwiches, like the BLT or the Reuben are some of my favorites. Their burgers are also a solid choice. My typical order is a half sandwich and soup. I've also greatly enjoyed the beer selection there. They have a good variety, but not overwhelming. All in all The Globe is a great choice, especially for the price you pay.

Yelp
I did what any good traveler does when I needed a drink and a little snack. I looked around for where the people were. I saw a small crowd in The Globe, I like the look of it so I went for it. I wasn't disappointed! The rustic-yet-not-overreaching ambience is perfect for the quieter crowd--erudite grad students, and corduroy professors sharing an interesting thought or story over a slow drink. Pleasantly devoid of adrenaline-fueled guzzlers and shouters, The Globe offered a much more laid back and mature atmosphere. I don't mean that in a bad way--this bar seems to cater those who enjoy imbibing at their leisure. I was marveled to see the wall of scotch stacked like decadent bricks against the bar, adjacent to another wall of wine. We pulled up to a table and draft menu. Not a bad beer selection either; however in a place like this, in a town like Athens I would have expected a bit wider variety. I wouldn't expect a Bier-Tap-Mega-Garden, but with as many interesting craft beers available, including so many coming from the area, I was a bit surprised to see it under-represented Within an hour, the bar filled up for the dinner rush, I was happy to see a large diverse crowd. It must be a testament to the bar because there were so many people they quickly ran out of room to sit down. The bar is sit-as-you-come, so it's easy for a place to fill up quickly. After a while, my girlfriend and I decided to order--I like pubs, and I like their fare even more. I would even go so far as to say it's my favorite. Everything seemed reasonably priced, the fish and chips were reasonably priced--$9 instead of a normal $13-14; my girlfriend's chicken salad sandwich a moderate $9 as well. But when I'm already paying a good price for a good beer or scotch, and I'm willing to settle down for dinner two, I hope that the meal lives up to the price. The fish, a little over-done. The Chicken Salad Sandwich seemed to be on par with a home recipe. They weren't bad, but I look for wow-factor and the food just wasn't quite there. None of this is to say I wouldn't return. I didn't get to explore the upstairs, nor did I get to try one those amazing-sounding burgers. I'd love to go back to try again, but with so many other places vying for the public's attention, I hope that this Public House can keep themselves relevant.

Yelp
I'm so glad the globe is back!! It's been amazing for the people who have been waiting two years. Sure, there are kinks. *it's been two years* I know they're doing their best! The fact that they've run out of food many times just proves how supportive the community has been in returning. I'll wait an hour for good food and solid beers on draft any day.
