12 Best Cocktail Bars in Asheville, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"The line between shot-and-beer dive and upscale craft cocktail bar is whimsically blurred at this West Asheville neighborhood lounge. Veteran bartenders Katey Ryder and Donnie Pratt, who own and operate this tropical kitsch wonderland, sling drinks that are unprecious yet exude the stamp of a mad scientist. Take, for instance, the bar’s eponymous cocktail, a whirlpool of rye whiskey and overproof rum served out of a gleaming golden pineapple chalice — or the Space Age Miami Vice, which blends appletini and pina colada flavors into a sweet, slushie delight. Savory cocktail fans will also appreciate the liberal use of briny, spicy, and umami-forward ingredients like chimichurri, black vinegar, tajin, and Sichuan peppercorn." - Laura Hackett

If you are visiting, take the time to get to West Asheville and if you are looking for a place to relax while enjoying a delicious drink, this place invites you with a range of creative offerings and you will likely try something new and love it. I had the Are you my Morton, bursting with citrus from in house lemon curd paired with ginger, amaro and a blend of Irish and Japanese whiskies. I also tried the Airing of the Grievances, which included a spirit I didn’t even know existed, a type of Mexican rum, coconut, carrot and dry curaçao. Sunday is pizza night, Monday they do smash burgers. They can make you anything you’re thinking of but you’ll likely find a choice on their menu. Venture over to West Asheville, check out spots like Harvest Records and then enjoy your time here.

Nice cocktail bar with a unique set of drinks. I didn't eat food so I can't review that. Good spot right off the highway on Haywood Rd. Waiters were friendly and helpful with recommendations for drinks. Update: I've been back a few times since I wrote my initial review. I'm consistently impressed with their cocktail selection, and the food is also excellent! I had a chicken salad melt that was just delicious, and sunch a non-traditional combination of flavors. It had pickled onions, smoked Gouda and chili crunch on a nice soft ciabatta roll! Side salad was also nice with greens and radicchio.

If you are in the Asheville area, go to The Golden Pineapple!! We LOVE our experiences at the Golden Pineapple! It was our first time there, we've heard a little about it. The drink menu is very fun and has something for everyone. Non alcoholic and alcoholic options. We both had the Bodega sandwich and it was one of the best sandwiches we both have ever had! Everything about the sandwich was incredible and the side salad was so delicious! The atmosphere was nothing short of pleasant. Fantastic place. We will definitely be coming back. P and J Update: We come here often. As much as possible. At least once a month. We truly can not get enough of Golden Pineapple. Ask for Marty. Get the bodega sandwich, add hash. Try the drinks. They are all so good!

It’s miracle time at the Golden pineapple! We are here with some frequency as I host a weekly radio show down the street on 103.3 FM. The cocktails are usually creative and well balanced, but when Christmas rolls around and they are part of the miracle pop-up, it’s another level entirely! Fun but kitschy decorations, Santa hats on every seat, a wide variety of mugs for a wide variety of creative cocktails, including Stegosaurus mugs and unicorn mugs and Santa pants, all festooned with fun garnishes, such as a peppermint umbrella or mint with powdered sugar on it to look like snow. The pop-up Christmas drinks are a little sweeter than their normal offerings, but you can certainly find a few tart or dry, such as the old-fashioned, which is on the much drier side. This is great fun every year. And the photos you will see posted with this review include this year, and then you’ll also see me sipping from a Krampus mug, which was last year. Sadly, there are no Krampus mugs this year. Hopefully the miracle pop up people will understand the importance of adding Krampus into future pop-ups. I’ll be looking for Krampus next year. In the meantime, I’m enjoying some of this year’s offerings, including a new favorite… a drink with an actual snowball in it. I asked the bartender about them and yes, they are all made in house. And shaped there. It was the most fun old-fashioned I have ever had. Pro tips: 1. it gets fairly busy later in the week, so try to come out potentially on a Sunday. Also, please note the days they are closed. 2. Soak up all that alcohol with something from their food menu. I really love their wings, but keep in mind that the spiced wings have the peppercorn that makes your mouth tingle. Which I actually really love. We will be back a few times this season while the miracle lasts!

I've been twice now, and both times had great cocktails and food! The titular Golden Pineapple cocktail is a favorite, scratching the tropical itch. The food exceeded my expectations - so far have loved the chicken salad melt and double down, both being a bit indulgent but nailing an elevated presentation and balanced flavors. Glad to be just a short walk away!

The Golden Pineapple has quickly become one of our favorite establishments in Asheville. The bartenders are always friendly and welcoming. The playlist is always awesome. There are many alcoholic and non alcoholic drink options. You will find all kinds of unique cocktails at The Golden Pineapple. My personal favorites are the frozen drinks: The Baja Blast and The Guava Colada, but they have literally every kind of alcohol you could imagine and the bartenders truly enjoy their craft. We also LOVE The Bodega Sandwiches (add hashbrowns). I am from NJ and always on the hunt for a delicious pork roll, egg, and cheese sandwich and The Golden Pineapple consistently understands that assignment. It’s our go to dinner spot on weekends and we truly always look forward to it.

I have not had any of their food yet, but their drinks are excellent. The cocktails are unique and very good. I ended up trying one of their smoothies the other day and it was out of this world. I highly recommend any of their cocktails

Went here last weekend and wanted to like it a little more but would certainly be open to trying again. The space was quite cozy and we had a high top in the front. The service started pretty strong but dwindled a little bit as the night went on. I ordered a Manhattan asked about the well. When the server came back to let me know and I asked for one up and he never provided any more details such as price or type. I had to follow up and ask him. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich and it was so spicy that I drank the entire carafe of water. It was never refilled. While I know I’m kind of weak, it would’ve been nice to have a little warning that it has some kick. Maybe it was just a one off? I honestly could not finish the second half and I own ate the first because I was hungry. If I knew it had that spice I probably would’ve opted for a different sandwich because it was not an enjoyable experience. I did like the salad that was served with a sandwich although it was kind of strange that it was covered in Panko and very crunchy. For two drinks and a sandwich, I don’t feel like $60 was worth it- this was not a fine dining experience or memorable. It was certainly cozy though

Yelp
Food: Great. The smash burger and wings HIT! Service: super hospitable kind and friendly staff. Ambiance: it felt like Urban Outfitters exploded on this place. Very cool laid back hipster vibes. Quiet, not crowded and just what i needed.

Yelp
The golden pineapple is good when we want to try something just funky enough. The food is fantastic and the drinks are delightful. It never fails that we just miss the pizza every time we've been on pizza nights but it's our mission to try it one day.

Yelp
I love this place. I come here often. I came back on a Tuesday and got to experience the Tuesday Highball experience. This is a funky fresh favorite cocktail of mine and so refreshing. I like to go to the West Asheville Tailgate market on Tuesday across the street then come here for dinner and a cocktail. I really like that this place has nightly specials, it keeps things fresh and keeps me wanting to come back for more and more to check them all out. I'm glad I got to the Tuesday one... The service is always spot on. Very knowledgable Bartenders that care and know what they are doing. I also see that they have DJ's and live music some nights so I'm super excited to come back for that. Parking is a bit tricky here... I'm not sure if they have any good recommendations, I may ask next time I'm in there. I've been probably parking illegally...

Yelp
The vibes here are cool. Great place to get a cocktail or two and hang out. The menu is unusual and the vegetables that came with the hummus platter were random. Mushrooms, but no carrots. The naan bread was phenomenal. Worth a stop.

Yelp
Wow! Incredible place. If you are wanting some Christmas spirit coke check this place out. Sooooo beautiful! Very cool place, great vibes, and awesome cocktails. Seriously kept giggling all night. Wonderful service- straight forward and to the point. No fluff. Overall great experience. Highly highly recommend

Yelp
This quirky and fun little spot is a hidden gem that we found through the yelp community. We were a bit apprehensive at first but when we came in the staff was overwhelmingly nice and welcomed us in. You could truly be yourself and who you are proudly as they served all types of people comfortably in Ashville. I had a ginger ale which they made personally and it tasted like a rush of ginger. My stomach had been upset all week and this settled it immediately and tasted delicious. The winner of the night: Whipped feta. I could marry the Roti and roll out all the vegetables as my dinner guests and be fully satisfied every time. The potato chips (real potato's), sweet peppers, seasoned veggies all melted in your mouth and paired nicely with the feta. Definitely go for a relaxed and good time.

Yelp
Drinks for the miracle Christmas special were so good. Pricey drinks but they were very good and tasty. Inside was decorated nice. Would come back when it's not miracle to try any of there special drinks.

Yelp
Mannnnnn, I almost will never leave a review. But I am blown the f**k away at how good this place is!!! Got the wings, took my servers recommendations for the sauces they have and they absofreakinglutely SLAPPED. The fester sauce hands down was my favorite followed by the fish sauce. Wish I could remembered my servers name - but my guy crushed it, prompt service. Wings came out fast, beer was excellent. 10 out of friggin 10 I will be back. Unfortunately for me and my wallet now I know where to find the best wings in Asheville and it's right up the street from my girlfriend's house. Ready to see how they deliver on burger night - I dare Monday to hurry up and get here, cuz it looks like meats back on the menu boys.

Yelp
These drinks are weird as hell! Just like Asheville! I got the Pie High Club (?) I think that's what it was called.... It had Bourbon, caramelized onions, mushrooms and some other stuff I can't remember- it was served hot, tasted like soup and still got me drunk! Amazing. The Baja Blast shooters went down real smooth . Honestly I loved all the drinks and was BLOWN AWAY by the creativity. This is a fun place, and they serve food late (thank god). The boiled peanuts taste like Worcestershire sauce. We came 2 nights in a row

Yelp
If there were 10 stars possible, this would be my only 10 star in Asheville. This West Asheville bar has an unassuming exterior, but walk inside and you're transported into a hipster dive-bar-chic oasis. I was intrigued by their house cocktail menu. Over the course of the evening, between two of us, we tried 5 different ones and they were all incredible. My faves were the Champagne El Camino, No Nonsense and the Golden Pineapple. Every signature cocktail here is pure delight in a glass. Well-balanced, just sweet enough and with a reliable boozy kick. (Keep in mind I'm from Los Angeles and experienced the whole craft cocktail movement yada-yada. Yes, I've been to The Imperial and yes, I've been to Sovereign Remedies and they both get high marks in my book.) The real sleeper hit here is the FOOD. OMG, the food! I came here for the drinks, but DAMN, the food was mind-blowingly good! I honestly believe they have the best chicken wings in town. I don't even like chicken wings and never order them myself, but my hubby loves wings. We ordered 4 garlic fish sauce wings and 4 golden sriracha buffalo wings and they were scrumptious. I don't know how they do it, but these wings were cooked to perfection. With a slightly crispy exterior, yet tender and juicy inside, delicately sauced (not hiding flaws behind a ton of sauce) and such an explosion of savory flavors, it had our eyes rolling back in yum heaven. I know - garlic fish sauce flavored wings sounds weird, but people who know fish sauce, know it's a secret umami weapon. It's like truffle oil, a compact pungent hit of umami that can put some combinations over the top. Last, but not least, the Bodega Sandwich is a MUST. If you order it, be sure to add a curried hash brown, you'll thank me later. This sandwich with blistered pork, spicy mayo, fried egg in a soft ciabatta roll, along with that slight crunch of the hashbrown will have your bliss meter off the charts. I'm not even being hyperbolic here, but kudos to the kitchen because each dish we had was "judges table" perfect. Perfectly cooked, carefully plated, gorgeous looking and even better tasting. My husband said Golden Pineapple is right up there, next to Jargon in his book. Even the side salad that accompanied the sandwich was dressed to perfection. And of course the drinks were amazing as well, as was our bartender, Sean. Golden Pineapple fires on all cylinders. I'm not easily surprised and this place surprised the hell out of me. The thought and sophistication of the cocktails and food is frankly astonishing. How is this place not featured more as one of the lauded Asheville establishments? It's only a matter of time because between the service, ambiance, drinks and food, it's in a league of its own.

Yelp
Love, love, love this place! I had such an awesome experience here and am already planning my next trip. I stopped by on a Monday night at around 6pm and there were only a few other people there when I arrived. Drew came and met me at the door and helped me quickly get a membership. I sat at the bar because I came in by my lonesome. I enjoyed sitting at the bar as the bar seats were comfortable, the bar is beautifully stocked and I adore the tiger painting hanging out above the bar! Their cocktail menu is fantastic! I ordered the Crispy Gold with gin, lemon, anise, vanilla and turmeric. It was super delicious and it was fun to watch Drew make it. It was served in the glass (supposedly named after Marie Antoinette's breasts) and was frothy when it arrived. It has a tang to it. I love the idea of the Princess juice cocktail (because I'm a princess, duh) but I'm not a huge fan of mezcal so I don't know. It looks amazing and they served it in a cute glass. The cocktails all have great names too! They also have a few non-alcoholic drinks as well which sound incredible. I can not wait to come back in and get one asap! The coconut coffee fizz is served with cold brew, coconut, seltzer and nutmeg. I will definitely have to try that earlier in the evening sometime. Oh! And they have amazing wallpaper on one of their walls. A fantastic place indeed!

Yelp
Hands down our favorite spot that we visited on our last trip to Asheville. Service was so friendly from the host who checked us in & ran through COVID protocols to the bartender who made drink recommendations and chatted us up. Being from the Midwest, I love a good boilermaker deal and the options here were so fun! I had a glass of natural wine that was delicious with a side of sherry. My fiance insisted boilermakers are meant to be joined like a sake bomb so he mixed his rum into his coconut lime beer and loved it. For our second round, we each had a cocktail. They have some off the wall stuff (mine came with a parmesan crisp on top!) and the bartender was great at making recommendations for us on those. We both thoroughly enjoyed the drinks and felt like we had tried something we couldn't get anywhere else. They also have a dog that wanders the space, which I loved

Eme D.

Yelp
EASILY my favorite place I've ever been in my life. The vibes are AMAZING and the employees are just as great. We sat down immediately at the bar and we're served quickly. Our bartender kept checking on us and made sure everything was good. Our drinks were amazing and we loved every bit of it. If you can, go during Christmas time because the decor is incredible. Love love love love love it!

Yelp
Get the burger!!! Came for dinner on national burger day and they did not disappoint! The house salad is amazing!! They use local greens and a house made vinaigrette. The service was excellent. Down to earth people with personalities not robots. Our drinks were top notch as well! 10/10 Definitely coming back
google avatar

Yelp
Best cocktail bar in West Asheville! Pets are allowed inside and they even have dog treats and water bowls for them. The decor is beautiful and fun to look at! For food, we ordered the warm milk bread with kimchi cheese, which was kept warm with a candle. Must try if you are not lactose intolerant. We also ordered the fried chicken wings with yellow sriracha and the dan dan noodles. All the food was delicious and they serve food until midnight. For drinks we ordered turtle records, marty's mindblower, apt. 42, and culinary school dropout. All the drinks were great and we loved it! Highly recommend this place for dinner and drinks. Will be coming back next time I come and visit.

Yelp
It's eclectic, well lit, Timmie was amazing, knowledgeable, and very friendly. I highly recommend a visit when in West Asheville. Parking is an issue but there a lots around.

Yelp
Impeccable menu. Hella friendly staff. Food. Good people. Prices reasonable for the quality of food and drink. Love GP and can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Yelp
The cocktails and the food are really delicious, high quality ingredients and unique. Not typical bar food at all! Love that they change menu seasonally to use the local farms. It's also a fun and comfortable vibe, a neighborhood bar with great eats!

Yelp
This place is amazing. I would go early, hang out, and tip generously. The place is small and the tables go quickly. If you arrive at 6:15, you are probably too late. Make sure you have your vaccination card on you. The cocktails were so inventive and fun. Great to take photos of! The five of us shared everything and not one thing disappointed. In fact, we did some repeat orders because of how tasty things were. Go for potato fritters and roasted mushrooms: Their burrata had an interesting take that threw me because I am used to burrata being massive. Theirs was a lot smaller, but tasty nonetheless. Get the Golden Pineapple drink and Cray like a Fox. So many waiters will assist through your dinner (at least that was our experience). I didn't get everyone's name but everyone was working hard. Special shout out to Malcolm and Jill for their efficient service.

Yelp
What a great spot for a cocktail in Asheville! Lots of fun patrons very accommodating staff and delicious drinks, get the golden pineapple signature, you won't regret it:-)

Yelp
Great night at The Golden Pineapple's holiday pop up. Christmas decor and Christmas themed cocktails were spectacular! I had the Christmas carol Barrel and the Christmapolitan. Such a fun experience!
google avatar

Yelp
This place was so festively decorated for the holiday. We had a fun time grabbing some drinks and food. All the holiday drinks were really fun. Great atmosphere and energy inside too!

Yelp
This place is so charming and full of character. We stopped by a few days after Christmas and the place was decked out with amazing decorations from wall to wall. The ambiance is mellow and the music selection was great. I recommend the Milkbread with Kimcheese (not a typo).
google avatar

Hope M.

Yelp
Good food. Wide variety of liquor available. All reasonably priced. Had the mushroom dan dan noodles and they were delicious.

Kellie U.

Yelp
Fantastic, fresh food with amazing flavor! Service is spectacular! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Dark, fun vibe. Genuinely nice bartender. Favorite cocktail was Losing Your Rhind, but there's something for every taste. Late night Bodega Sandwich and Mushroom noodles were both spicy and delicious. 10/10 Perfect spot for a night cap or late dinner.

Yelp
Amazing cocktail list. I had two the first time I was here, now I'm determined to check them all off one by one. Love the atmosphere too. Conveniently located in West Asheville. They also have beer and wine, a cold brew coffee, and some juice-type things. My new favorite place! I've loved the Pretty in Pink and of course the Golden Pineapple No. 1!

Yelp
Had a mixed experience here on a recent Friday night - two out of three drinks were quite good (the beet and Applejack-based cocktails). The third, "Crispy Gold" involving turmeric and gin tasted just like dandruff shampoo smells. For me it was wholly undrinkable - even as a fan of Golden Milk, turmeric-based curries, and well, booze. My husband and a person at the bar beside me who ordered the same drink didn't like it either. Our bartender who initially endorsed my selection never checked back in, and seemed to be studiously avoiding eye contact with my mostly full returned cocktail coupe. I think he knew what was up, but I wasn't gonna get in his face about it being gross. Shrug. My impression (compared to recent stellar visits to competitive cocktail joints Antidote and Save Me the Waltz) is that Golden Pineapple's current cocktail menu is more esoteric and cerebral than fully realized and balanced. As a new bar, there may be a few bumps and growing pains as they make adjustments. I'm OK with that but still waiting to be wow-ed. In terms of atmosphere, Golden Pineapple's nicely decorated but definitely a hipster scene. Like, don't be surprised if your cocktail waiter has a Tom Selleck moustache or is clad in mechanic coveralls. West Asheville takes all kinds and I'm glad to have a new, locally-owned bar in the neighborhood. I'm optimistic they can dial in their drinks and dampen the noisy atmosphere in response to customer feedback. I'll probably be back for another round soon to see what's up.

Of The S.

Yelp
Golden pineapple is hands down the best place to if you're still reading this you're literally garbage! Why are you on this miserable app? Hope you choke on the wonderful ood at Golden Pineapple!

Yelp
We went for Miracle and had an amazing time. Drinks were great and the food was pretty good.
google avatar

Yelp
Our first time here. Beautiful decor. They clearly put some money and expertise into the design. Nice menu of drinks with an interesting design. All the cocktails are on the creative side, but I'm sure they can make the classics as well. My wife and I enjoyed all our drinks and the presentation was very nice. We had the chili spiced peanuts to go with our drinks. Would be nice if they had a bit more food selection, even if it's all uncooked. We encourage you to try it.
google avatar

Jin S.

Yelp
My husband and I were walking our dogs along Haywood Rd when we came upon this place. They allow dogs so it worked out perfectly. They don't serve food so you have to sign up for a membership for $1. Staff was very friendly. They also had a dog water bowl. I got the Summer cup-pimms cup no 1 with London dry gin, lemon, cucumber, ginger, seltzer. My husband got the Here's a weird one with lite and black strap rums, citrus, fermented blueberry and German bitters. They were both outstanding. I look forward to coming back here.
google avatar

Nora N.

Yelp
This was my first time at The Golden Pineapple. My best friend has been there a few times and to celebrate my birthday, she took me there. The atmosphere was classic, welcoming, and comfortable! They have a wide variety of cocktails for everyone. They even have (at least) one non-alcoholic drink. There is a bar at the window with comfortable chairs that faces Haywood Road which makes it easy to people watch. The service was attentive and friendly. I can't wait to go back! I truly hope they become a staple of West Asheville!

Alyson S.

Yelp
What a great spot in West Ashville that was recommended by locals. We were visiting for 5 days and were pleased to find a cool location with a great bartending staff and fabulous cocktails. So much so that we stopped in whenever we had a chance! If we visit Ashville again we will definitely stop by.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere. Loved the decor. We were a party of 6 and all of us got different drinks. We weren't too crazy about them.

Yelp
So grateful for this unique spot in our neighborhood! We love the vibe & the cocktails and wine are great! Also, they allow dogs....so basically the perfect west Asheville spot!

Jared W.

Yelp
Amazing cocktails and an outstanding food menu for a late night food. Run by great people with awesome service.

Tom G.

Yelp
This is the kind of place Asheville is known for. Local owner/operators with a long history in the Local restaurant and bar industry. Great little place, hidden right on Haywood Rd. in West Asheville. Next to the vacuum store, say hello to Hover the Cat! Top of the line mixed drinks with most of the ingredients made in-house. Best Carroll Gardens in town, best Sazerac in town. (Believe me, I have had these two drinks everywhere.)

Norma P.

Yelp
The drinks were delicious and the bartenders were very friendly. Honestly best drinks and service we got all night. I lost my virginity to myself in this bar. We will definitely be going back next time I'm in town!
