15 Places to Buy To-Go Pie Around D.C.

"This pie shop was lucky enough to receive a visit from then-First Lady Michelle Obama back in 2012. Today, the shops remain popular thanks to pie varieties like bourbon walnut, lemon chess, raspberry peach, and more. All locations are currently open for pickup, including Leesburg and Round Hill. No delivery." - Lisa Ruland

First time here after receiving a recommendation and I wasn't impressed by the lack of seating, but appreciated the free parking. With no place to seat inside or tables in front the Golden Plume to sit at it does not have a comfy, community feel nor seem inviting. The interior is lack lacker and a bit cramped as it was hard to have more then one or two people by the sliced pie area. I don't recall if they welcomed us, but they were great and sliced up a single slice of pie for us and didn't make us select from the already sliced pieces. That was a huge win for us. They were polite and patient while we determine which pie slices we would get. We tried the Bourbon Walnut pie, Almond Amaretto Chess, and the Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie. Our favorite was the Almond Amaretto Chess (flavor and consistency was spot on) and our least favorite was the Chocolat Peanut pie (this is a cheesecake put in a pie tin). Overall, the pie is good and the staff was nice but it lacks an inviting feel. It's a good place to grab a quick take away but that is it.

This bakery adventure was a happy accident as we had lunch next door & I couldn’t not come see what scrumptious items they had. First off, they were super friendly, and even though it was early afternoon they had a ton of variety still in the store (which does not happen often in RVA) anyway. We purchased an assortment of things and so far we’ve tried the sugar cookie & the butter pecan strawberry rhubarb pie, which was excellent. Do not hesitate to give them a try! Prices are fair & we will return when we’re in the area. Thanks y’all!

Google
The pies on display looked delectable as soon as I stepped into the establishment. Picked up a banana cream pie, a peanut butter chocolate pie, and a quiche. Tried them over the course of a week and wasn’t impressed. The price also played a factor in my dissatisfaction, at $28 per pie I guess I just expected more.

Google
Huge selection. Gluten-free items too. Apple Cranberry was tart with just a bit of sweet. Lattice crust, for me, would have made it perfect. Gluten-free peanut butter cookies are amazing. The oatmeal cookie was similar to what grandma used to make. I will return and highly recommend a must stop if you haven't already.

Google
Love this bakery! Their cinnamon rolls are huge and so delicious, I get one if they’re not sold out. I tried the orange Bundt cake and that was delicious as well. I would recommend those two and the coconut cream pie. The bakery is always clean and the staff is friendly. Stop by whenever you’re in occoquan!

Google
Mom’s apple pie was everyone’s warm welcoming bakery, the golden plum did not have the same energy at all. It was tight even though there was 9 people in total in the whole bakery. The young girls rushed us the whole time and was irritated when we wanted something in the case instead of being ready to check out. One of our pies, the pecan peach pie was a bit doughy still. Overall the other pies were yummy. As someone who works in customer service, despite being under pressure - it’s still nice to greet customers as they walk in and be patient with them, ask if they need any help. Seems like the girls need training on this.

Google
Now THIS is a magical place. Formerly Mom's Bakery, the Golden Plum is irresistable. Upon entering you are hit with the comforting scent of butter and things baking all around, and the sight of delicious looking cookies, cakes, pies, etc. all around. I have been a personal fan of this place for quite some time and I have loved everything I tasted. Everyone here is so friendly and everything is homemade. I highly recommend you put this place on your list when visiting Occoquan!

Google
First time being in this bakery but heard lots of good comments about it. We tried 3 pie pieces, raspberry, apple and chocolate coconut pies. All were good. The raspberry pie tastes a real home made jam. The chocolate coconut was good but a little bit sweet for my taste.

Yelp
I saw this bakery as I entered Occoquan and decided I had to try it before I left. The bakery has a decent sized parking lot or you can easily walk from other parts of the city. The had a ton of individual slices of pie which was exciting to see. I got the butter pecan raspberry crumb, and it was delicious. The raspberries tasted fresh and the crumb was buttery. I also got a frosted sugar cookie in the shape of a bunny that was also delicious. The inside of the bakery is small and there isn't any seating, so be prepared to take your baked goods to go.

Yelp
This place is amazing. I stopped here on a roadtrip, completely by accident, and it was perfect because I needed to pick up a treat for an event that weekend. I bought a box full of cookies and they were so incredibly delicious. I wish I'd taken a photo. Their cookies will redefine the concept of cookie for you.

Yelp
Located in a really quaint neighbourhood for a great weekend activity, this place is worth a pit stop along the way. With tons of options for dessert, I went with the classic pecan pie. Everything tasted good but I do wish they were able to serve them warm with a scoop of ice cream to elevate the experience. They only had prepackaged to go pies. Service was friendly.

Yelp
I still will always have a sofe spot for Mom Apple pie but honestly the pie here still tastes the same. Still delicious and yummy. I do miss them have other Pasteris like different type of bread and sweet and more beverage option. Service/ Ambiance 5/5- Service staff always friendly and inviting, they did update the place, so it looks more spacious and cleaner. Parking can get tight depend on the timing and on the weekend. I normally just walk there since i live close to it. Food 5/5 Mexican Wedding Cookies 5/5 -$1each- amazing light not overly sweet cookie Lemon Bite $1.50 4/5- Good and lemony but a tad bit too sweet for me Banana Creme Pie slice $5.50 5/5 - heaven in my mouth, i love this and get it most of the time. If you like banana pudding you would it and not overly sweet with fresh cut banana slice. Cinnamon Roll $5.50 3/5 - Honest it does't taste bad it just way too big for me and bit tad dry. I think if they make it smaller will be better but that might jsut be me not liking too much sweet . Overall I would come back since i been coming went it use to be mom apple pie.

Yelp
The clerk was so friendly! There was a great assortment of pie slices in containers ready to go but the cinnamon roll drew me in. The others got a whoopie pie and lemon bar. Those had great flavor and were gobbled quickly. Back to the cinnamon roll. It was huge! Full of flavor, topped with lots of cream cheese frosting. I selected one for breakfast the next morning. It was sliced into quarters, then eighths for a breakfast treat. There is seating outside as well as coffee drinks, teas, and such. I would go back. p.s. The menu was reasonably priced and there is a parking lot on the premise!

Yelp
Definitely a nice spot to go get fresh pie. I came on a rainy Saturday and the service was phenomenal. If you don't want a whole pie you can get a slice. They also have loads of varieties of different kinds of pies. Parking in the lot is tight however there is street parking. Apple crumble pie is my favorite. Can't wait to go back and try something new.

Yelp
Cute little pie and sweets shop in old town occoquan. Greeted as entered, and multiple staff offered to help. They selected nicest looking treats from selection. Got a piece of pecan pie (tons of options), molasses cookie sandwich, lemon bar, and chocolate and vanilla Whoopi's pie. Tried the molasses and it was delicious. Will go again.

Yelp
I was a little bummed to hear that Mom's Apple Pie was closing but The Golden Plum is keeping the memory alive. Just as good as Mom's. They haven't skipped a beat and any pie you pick up off the table is going to satisfy that sweet tooth. It's really hard to not walk in here for the smells alone. The shop is a little smaller but the flavors and love put into each baked good is still there. Staff still friendly too! It's also especially good after going to the Ballywhack Shack Cafe!

Yelp
Stopped in here yesterday to grab desserts to take to go. I was so impressed with how many amazing options they had. It smells incredible inside. My husband saw me eyeing the banana chocolate chip bread and so we had to buy some to go. Others in our party bought the lemon chess pie. So good! They have super convenient parking right out front. The staff working inside were really friendly. Definitely a cute spot that I highly recommend.

Yelp
This pie spot is AWESOME! The prior owners made great products as well but this new management and renovation of the pie shop is excellent. Plenty of fresh dessert options from delicious shortbread cookies, to pineapple upside down treats, pies, brownies, you name it. Similar offerings as the prior establishment (mom's pies I believe) nestled upon entering into historic occoquan. They offer savory quiches, some select specialty beverages in their fridge and sweets, both refrigerated and freshly baked. Parking is convenient for this storefront. Just a hop and a skip from all of the other beautiful local stores and waterfront experiences historical occoquan VA has to offer. My fiancé and I went in a few weeks ago and could not decide between a delicious butter pecan crust pie with apples, or butter, crusted raspberry pie. we knew just from looking at them and the smell of the location that one slice was not going to be enough! I was supremely impressed by the fact that the staff was so accommodating and helpful. I ended up buying one of each pie and asking if it were possible at all to divide them into halves and making a custom 2 flavor pie in a box- one for us and one for my parents who were meeting us for a chill Sunday walking around occoquan. The staff mentioned they had never heard of this request or done it before but made it so easy and so convenient they made sure that we did not have any nut allergies as the apple pie with the butter pecan crust would be an issue if that were the case. They were certainly very careful and mindful of this aspect, which is nice for those who suffer from food allergies. we do not have allergies tonight so it was not an issue and they quickly had a custom label to send us home with our pies!! Thank you so much to the staff and the pie was absolutely delicious with a scoop of cold ice cream, and some whip cream once we were home ! My parents absolutely devoured theirs as well! Do not hesitate to visit to this amazing pie shop !!

Yelp
The little lemon cookies are phenomenal. Also ordered an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie I can't wait to try. Don't leave occoquan without stopping here. Very friendly staff.

Yelp
Fantastic place to feed that sweet tooth. Family friendly and beautiful scenery of old town occoquan. The employees were pleasant and welcoming; I would highly recommend this location.

Yelp
I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! The smell when you walk in will make you want to buy everything. This place is known for their homemade pies. They do not disappoint. It's my mission to try every flavor. But you can't do wrong with classic apple pie. I also got the peanut butter cookies. This place is a 10/10 I can't rave about it enough. The customer service is always welcoming every time I come.

Yelp
I'm not changing my stars. Their pies and such are decent. My issue is their hours are annoying. I can't go during the week because their hours are 11-6. I was having some people for brunch one Saturday and they didn't open until 11... If I wanted to get their pies/pastries I literally can't. I realize businesses do not have to cater to my hours, but a long time ago, I would do pie day Friday once a month. I would either stop on a Friday morning before going or stop Thursday evening and buy $100 worth of their individual pie slices. With their hours now, I can't do pie day Friday anymore. I wish this business the best of luck. It's a great location. I just wish I could get there to buy their food.

Yelp
As an avid lover of Moms Apple Pie. I was so sad when it closed. Then I found out the daughter opened it back up as The Golden Plum. I was jumping for joy. Honestly, I try not to even drive down the street where the store is because I know there is no way I will not find myself in the parking lot. To call these pies good is an insult. To call these pies heaven is a better choice. WARNING, WARNING!! ADDICTIVE PIE!!

Yelp
I have been looking for a place to sit down and have a tea, unwind, do some reading and a month ago I have found such a place here in Occoquan. The porch outside of the establishment has been my draw primarily as it has a view out into Occoquan. Their bakery is solid. Pies, and other confections and sorts of sweets have been delicious. The lady that works there Ushat is very pleasant to talk to every time I get my tea. I've become enough of a regular to ask for "the usual". I highly recommend this establishment, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
All of the pies are amazing!!! Almost addicting. Love the fruit pies. My favorite dessert to buy for visitors

Yelp
Update: The owner of Golden Plum Bakery responded to my review. After reading the response, I understand that despite the name change, the same products from Mom's Pie are sold so I was not bamboozled. The owner stated that they are in the process of transitioning recipes to their own to offer crumb cake, passion fruit tarts, shortbread, new cute sugar cookies, and more. I am thankful for the response to my review, and look forward to returning to Golden Plum Bakery in the future to try crumb cake, tarts, shortbread, and other cookies. Lastly, due to the owner's explanation, I increased the star rating.

Yelp
I've been going here when it was Mom's since 2001, both this location in Occoquan and Leesburg. I was first introduced to the most amazing banana cream pie by one of the bakers in Leesburg. Honestly, customer service has never been consistent (sometimes great... sometimes not that good if they were swamped) in the many years I've consistently shopped at the Occoquan location, but it didn't matter because the pies were always great. However, I'm refusing to ever go back. I recently called ahead to ask for an open faced strawberry pie that is also advertised in front of your store as in-season and available. I drove out 30+ minutes away to be there at 11am and upon walking in was not greeted or asked if I needed any help. There had to been at least 8 employees there already and each looked very tired and annoyed. There was only me and one other customer and when I asked someone for the pie I was rudely told they're sold out despite me calling ahead for one and you had just opened. I stood there for another 10 minutes before anyone even asked what I needed behind the counter. I had to ask if I could buy anything! What a shame to have such a wonderful and warm place become so icy. The drive and wait isn't worth it anymore to deal with your horrible and unwelcoming staff.

Jen D.

Yelp
We stopped by today and tried a few things. We had a peanut butter cookie (actually bought at the cafe next door but made by the golden plum) and it was awful. It didn't really even taste like peanut butter. We did not eat it. We also bought a super sweet looking heart shortbread with jelly in the middle. The jelly kind of tasted like candy. It was good, but I wouldn't buy it again. However, the lemon bar.... INCREDIBLE!!!! So so so good! If we are back in that area, I would definitely stop and buy a lemon bar.

Yelp
Blueberry Pie with Butter Pecan Crumble. Oh my. This was heavenly. I was in town shopping at MoM's and honestly just looking for a bakery to buy fresh bread, and this pie place popped up. I had been to the old Apple Pie Store at this location years ago. I figured I would give it a try. After watching that Netflix documentary and learning that sugar doesn't cause death and it's really all the meat we eat, I have slowly been adding sugar back to my diet and reducing my meat intake. This was the best pie I have had in a really long time. The last local pie I had was from some place in Manassas, which I can't remember the name, but it left a bleh taste in my mouth. You know, has that Robitussin flavor, unnatural preservatives, and worst of all, ends up as a puddle of goo when you slice it open. Well, Golden Plum was absolutely fantastic and had great flavor and texture. Chock full of blueberries, butter and pecan forward. This is what good pie is supposed to taste like. Highly recommended. For the donkey who gave this place 1 star, Needs to be locked up in jail, cause they are nuts.

Yelp
My sweet tooth always has me searching for cookies at the age of 48(I can't keep them in the house ), once week I like to splurge and get something sweet so The Golden Plum is right up my alley. Its location is convenient. Occoquan, the main strip stays very busy and parking is limited, but they are situated one street over from the busiest section and have their own parking. so you can get in and out with a minimal walk-of-shame while feeding your sugar addiction We were greeted promptly upon entering. I was overwhelmed with all the options- cold pies, standard pies, buckeyes and cookies. There is no where to sit unless you sit on the front porch where there are a couple of seats. I was happy with the Butter Pecan Sour Cherry Crumb(at bit like my mom used to make with Michigan cherries) and my husband compared his Lemon Chess to lemon bars. Both were delicious and we are fans of the thick crust. Some premade coffee was available and there were some breads and other items. Definitely stop by if you want something sweet, it will not disappoint ***Side note: I am in Loudon County regularly and on occasion hit Mom's Apple Pie, which used to be the name at this location. This business is still family owned and comparable. It is a much nicer space than the one in Loudon.

Yelp
This is a pleasant surprise of a shop. I was killing time in the area and stopped for a coffee. Lo and behold they have a pie shop here. Pies, quiches, brownies and cookies. And my personal favorite - chocolate meringue with butter crust. I had my piece of pie and my coffee on the patio and enjoyed the fine weather. A nice little shop. 5 dollars per slice for handmade pie is definitely worthwhile. I left with four more slices for home.

Summer H.

Yelp
Recommend the Pecan chocolate pie, any of the fruit pies, peanut butter mouse dipped in chocolate, chocolate pecan brownie slices. The gigantic cinnamon rolls. The smell alone with cure your winter blues, it's like a warm hug as soon as you walk in the door. Service was great too!

Patty V.

Yelp
The pies are delicious but I have to say that their check out process still needs much work. If there are no customers - no problem you get your products and get checked out. But when the place has even more than 3 customers, customers are confused as to what to do and where to go to check out. When they are busy, it is a free for all to get served and checked out (except for during the holidays - they seem to have the line and register checkout process working good). They have 2 registers. The last few times I have been at this pie store, they have a line at the one register located on the right side of the store. You order or pick up your products then move over to the register to pay. Folks were giving their order to the person running the cash register. You wait. The line was growing at least 7 people waiting to check out. A young girl from the back opens the second register. Instead of taking the next customer in line that has been fairly waiting she starts checking out customers at the back of the line. Now you have 2 lines growing and can't get to the counter. Why did she not checkout the next person(s) who has been waiting in line or take over the register while the other clerk pulled the order - there were 2 ahead of me.

Yelp
I loved the old bakery and made a point to stop by as often as possible (I live pretty far from Occoquan). Here's the deal: the desserts look the same but everything we tried (we bought a lot) tasted way sweeter than before, like maybe extra butter or eggs or something was swapped for extra sugar. One pie slice was very good. Three other types were sugar-overload sweet. The various cookies we tried were extremely sweet. Only the one pie slice was eaten entirely. Perhaps if they can make things like before (and not so sugary) I will try again in the future but now they need to sort this out.

William K.

Yelp
Definitely worth the drive. The amaretto almond pie is absolutely delicious. It is my favorite, but all the other pies I have tried are also very good. The staff said it can get crazy right before a holiday, but the pies can be frozen. I would recommend going a week or so before Thanksgiving and utilizing your freezer. Bring one of these pies to a function, and I guarantee it will be a hit!

Marion E.

Yelp
No better bakery in NOVA! If you are looking for "made from scratch," channeling the best grandma baker ever, warm hug experience, and an astonishing value, this establishment is your treasured solution. Whether you're looking for traditional or unique pies and pastries, you will find it here. I've purchased a wide range of fruit and nut pies over the years and I've always had rave reviews from my guests. Just purchased a Rhubarb pie today for a dear friend. Delicious and so easy to order online and pickup. It was freshly ready per my requested pickup time! In every respect, perfect!

Meredith R.

Yelp
The Golden Plum is a delightful spot that brings the charm and flavors of the original Mom's location in Leesburg to a new audience in Occoquan. While Mom's is best known in the area for their delectable pies (especially their apple and rhubarb), I personally can't get enough of their buckeyes -- they are a must-try! Mom's is the only place that gets buckeyes done right! (In fact, I wish they could partner with the local Bruster's because they claim to have "buckeye ice cream" when it is very obviously made with Reese's peanut butter cup). My kids also adore the sugar cookies, making Mom's a family favorite. The ambiance is cozy, and the staff is always friendly. Whether you're in for a sweet treat or just a comforting pastry, The Golden Plum won't disappoint!

Michelle H.

Yelp
The pies are really good. When I asked for one slice of a whole pie they got it for me right away!
google avatar

Carmen H.

Yelp
I've been coming to this place since it was known as Mom's Apple Pie. The new update is beautiful and they have the same amazing product as before. I'm so happy they are back!!!

Marie B.

Yelp
Not a big selection - very specific baked goods like boutique cookies, cakes or slices of pie. I've heard the challah bread is great, but have never made it in time to grab some.

Michele K.

Yelp
Customer service, efficiency, and quality decreased since name change. The recipient did not change, but the pleasantness certainly did.

Christopher A.

Yelp
Great selection of outstanding desserts! Excellent customer service/experience. My wife and I will definitely be visiting again soon

Yelp
SAME AMAZING PIES from previous owners of Mom's Apple Pies! As of 4/20, they're renovating but still open (Thank goodness! Don't know what I would do without their pies! Just not at full capacity)! Limited stock of items, but still as scrumptious as before. Get some before they sell out for the day! Can't wait until they're fully up and running!

A M G.

Yelp
We are so happy that Golden Plum Bakery is open, as we missed the excellent pies that we bought for years from its predecessor, Mom's Apple Pie. So far, we have had an apple pie and a blueberry pie, which had the delicious flavors that we love. The best pies around! Service was excellent, in and out in a flash.
