We watched the finals of the 2022 World Cup soccer match there yesterday morning at 6:45 A M along with 200 other locals. Service was exceptional. Food was shockingly delicious. The vibe was energetic. Thank you Golden Squirrel Pub for a great first impression!

Lively crowd and big screens for watching the game. Huge selection of fresh better on tap. Modern pub food that's both creative and satisfying. Friendly wait staff. Squirrels. What's not to love!

I've been here twice. They burnt the burger the first time. Tonight I got a medium rare burger with a side salad. When I got home the burger was cold, clammy and raw. The bottom of the takeout container was filled with blood, ruining the salad. No pressure on the kitchen because the place was empty and I know why. My dog enjoyed her $20 burger. Friends shouldn't let friends go to this place.

Fun place with lots of seating. Staff was nice, food was good. Wasn't dead, but also no crowded when I came in for dinner on a weekday. Looking forward to coming back for a drink some time!

We used to come here once in a while when it was called Barclay's. Still has similar vibe. Comfortable pub atmosphere. Good selection of drinks, nice selection of food including vegetarian options. Very good service. Outdoor seating is plentiful. Very good location on college avenue. Not far from rockridge BART, supermarkets and shopping.

Good food and a nice range of drink options. The new service model restaurants have adopted where one server has to cover the entire restaurant doesn’t work. I hope they dump it. To be clear- the server was good. The service was bad.

At the time I am writing this, I haven't even seen my food yet but my first (highly anticipated) visit was already on the downhill, but it sort of recovers! Golden Squirrel was always on my list to visit for brunch. After a few years, it finally happened, though this review is overdue as the actual experience was during the height of the pandemic. To start, getting seated was a bit of challenge. It wasn't clear from the outside signage so I went inside and asked. They tell me I order first then they assign me seating. Okay, moving on after ordering - I ask if I can choose my table. I usually wouldn't care where they place me, but since it was well into the pandemic and this immediate "outdoor" seating close to the door was very crowded, it felt a bit enclosed and I wanted be away from the crowd. The staff said (bit less friendly than initially) well, it's wide open, but I can seat you on the sidewalk. I then wonder, they say wide open seating but they're still gonna assign me. I tell the staff that that I am not crazy about being on the sidewalk with the foot traffic. The staff (giving up) finally offer me the option to choose. After some back and forth we finally land on seating - granted it was near the sidewalk, but in one of those more al fresco-like setup that felt a bit stable. What a beginning. The Fish & Chips was okay for the most part (fish was oversalted and soggy after a few minutes). Staff were friendly and checked in on me despite our initial impressions, so I appreciated that they didn't seem to bear a grudge. P.S. Another party came and sat right down (sign says to check in for seating and not seat oneself) and everything went okay. Maybe that's the thing to do next here - just go for it.

I want to preface this by saying that squirrels are my favorite animal, and they are the superior urban forest critter. This is one of the main reasons why my friend and I decided to go to the Golden Squirrel on College Ave last week! When we arrived, there were not many people and we were able to be seated right away. The servers were super quick and attentive at first which was lovely! We ordered the "totchos" to share as a starter, then I ordered the fish and chips and my friend got the fried chicken sandwich. All were delicious!! Except my fish mayyyy have been a tad over cooked, but it didn't really bother me. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very similar to that of the Central Perk in the popular tv show "Friends". Comfy, cozy, and below street level. We loved it! The only problem is that once we got our food, the service ended entirely. We were done eating for a good 30 minutes before anyone checked on us and asked if we needed anything or the check. We couldn't flag anyone down because no one was really walking around either. We finally got our check and realized upon leaving that it was comedy night and all of the employees were helping with that event. We understood this and we're not mad, but that is the only reason they are getting a 3 star rating from me instead of 5!

Although I came here for Sunday brunch, I decided to get the BLT instead and enjoyed it a lot! The crisp bacon was accompanied by even crispier Focaccia bread. The one thing I didn't like about the sandwich was the raw onions. I generally find raw onions too harsh, and this sandwich had a significant chunk, though not enough to overtake the sandwich. The potato chips that came with the sandwich were like a fancier, heartier Lay's, which I liked. One of the things I especially like about this place is the reusable cloth napkins. I've lived down the street from The Golden Squirrel for a while now and I have stopped in quite a few times and I've always had a good experience. Every time I've gone it's not been too packed which has allowed us to really have our choice of seat in one of their two indoor areas or one of the two outdoor areas. My favorite thing to order is the BLT, Fish and Chips, the Fried Chicken Sandwich or the Burger. All of which are delicious and paired with fries or chips. Also, each one goes great with a beer or a fresh lemonade. I'd recommend stopping in if you are in the area! Relaxed vibes and good food.

This place is so cute! My bf and I wandered there because the place we wanted to go to down the street was packed. They had an abundance of outside seating, and the menu they posted outside of their establishment seemed interesting enough. We wandered in, and were greeted right away. We asked to be seated in this side room that had no one else in there, and they were happy to oblige, despite meaning they would have to walk the extra distance to take our order and serve our food. We just ordered a couple of appetizers, both of which were fresh and delicious, and beers. Their fish taco is really good. They have an extensive menu of beers, wine, cocktails, spirits. Service was attentive without being intrusive and the price was not bad considering this is rockridge.

My wife and I decided to check this place out last night and it was squirriffic!! The staff was super friendly, great food, clean bathroom, and I can't recommend Strawberry Daze (blonde ale) enough. Plus they were having a comedy show and its FREE, the guy said it's every Wednesday and Saturday so we'll definitely be back.

I've been to the golden squirrel 3 times now, and while I enjoyed the last 2 times, this third time was a let down. Maybe it was because it was a Warrior's playoff night, but service was awfully slow and the food wasn't as good as the last time we were here. We came around 9:15pm on a Thursday, and it was pretty busy for the warriors game. While we were seated quickly, no one came by to take our order for a good 10-15 mins until I was able to flag someone down. I miss the days we could just order at the bar. We ordered the burger, Greek salad, and pickle chips. Surprisingly, the burger came out first. Or not surprisingly because the fries were room temperature and the burger was more medium-well than medium. It was disappointing because I remember the burger and fries being really good. Anyways no one checked on us until we were done with the food. If this was my first time here, I'd give 2 stars for the whole experience. I don't think I'll be coming back.

I scheduled a delivery order and placed it a little over two hours ahead of time. The order was half an hour late and one of the items was changed - I assume they were out of fried pickles and just replaced with fries, I would have rather been refunded and gone without as we already had fries with the burger order. The $14 house Mac and cheese was TINY and terrible, undercooked shells with velveeta. Don't bother!

I used to come here when it was Barclay's and thankfully they haven't changed too much. Great beer list, full bar, outdoor patio, and a friendly crowd. I got the burger which was cooked well and seasoned well. The fries were on the cold side but had good texture. Overall, the meal was pretty good.

Great food, great beer...slower service. To be honest the servers were really nice just super slow bringing out stuff. I don't know if stuff was just forgotten, but took a while to get everything. However, when we did get it, all tasted delicious! All the potatoe based dishes were amazing on top of a delicious burger and fish from the fish and chips. Would definitely come back!

I rounded Down from 3.5 stars. Kids meal. Grilled cheese. This is not made for kids. It was ok. But, the cheese was runny like Mac n cheese and tasted like it too. Plus, you can kinda see in the pic that the cheese was oozing through the bread and squished out as you bit into it. Way too soggy of a sandwich. The fish and chips tasted good. But, omg could it BE a smaller portion?! Look at the piece of fish compared to the little cup of ketchup. You know how small those cups are, yet it looks monstrous next to the fish. The chicken sandwich was really the only good thing that we tried here. It was a pretty hefty bill considering how dissatisfied we were when we left. We had to go find something to eat after leaving here because we were still hungry.

Thank god for comedy in 2022. (What is this shitshow, anyway?!) The Golden Squirrel was already a beloved Oakland staple, a great place to watch basketball and grab a beer on a weeknight. NOW they've upped their game, and have live standup on Saturdays. It's a safe and pandemic-friendly venue - you can sit outdoors or in an open-air room. It almost almost alllllllllmost feels like normal life. Most importantly, the comedians are funny. You get to LAUGH. In 2022. Which, so far, has been a train wreck. Makes it even more important to laugh. Also, there's whisky. Also, beer. Also? Fish and chips. Honestly, not sure I want to do anything else on Saturdays anymore. Thank you GS!!

Good food and good selection of beers. We got the burger, medium well. Juicy and not dry. Tater tots nachos were good.

Came here on a Friday for lunch. There are plenty of outdoor tables. The place is clean and tables are spaced out enough. You order at the counter inside first and the cashier will assign a table once you ordered. The staff is very nice and he actually sprayed and cleaned my credit card after I paid which is very thoughtful to do. I would recommend the burger if it's your first time there! (That's what the staff recommended me actually) I ordered rare for my patty and it was cooked perfectly, just how I wanted it. The carnitas tacos are decent and the corn salad is delicious as well.

Excellent service and great food selection The new COVID protocols make ordering food easier than before. The service is much faster as well. The food as always is divine. I recommend the Totachos or loaded tater tots. They'll make a tater tot lover out of anyone.

Went to Golden Squirrel one weekend with a friend! The service was pretty lack luster and the whole vibe felt off. We ordered ciders and some food. The ciders we got right away and sipped on while waiting for our food. 30..45..60 minutes later and our food STILL had not come. After an hour and a half of NO FOOD, we ended up leaving. I did not appreciate the service there. All in all, this was a super frustrating situation and definitely solidifies that I won't be back to Golden Squirrel.

This review is only for their brunch. Golden Squirrel is a neighborhood gathering place for both families, sports fanatics or those who just want to meet up with friends. It's nice that Rockridge has a place like this. We came on a Sunday for brunch and ordered: Loco Moco - coconut rice, 2 fried eggs, oxtail-porcini gravy. This was a disappointment. My beef patty was overcooked and dry, and the gravy was light on flavor and substance. I am still not sold on the pairing of sweet coconut rice with something that is supposed to be savory. Fried chicken Sandwich - the fried chicken was just ok but we didn't like the BBQ sauce. We substituted fries for the chips but in our book you have to do fries well and these were just aight. GS is offering a bunch of different events to bring people together like comedy on Saturdays.

Hard pass. After waiting over an hour for our forgotten food, It was not good. Such a disappointment. They should just loose the food menu and keep their bar menu. Is this place ever busy or poppin ? When ? They had 4 employees working with only 2 tables and still there's no waiter. You have to scan to order or walk to the bar to order. You have to get yourself, Water refills, drinks, napkins , salt pepper , limes , ketchup. All the employees do is deliver your food, that's it. Not one person ever checked on us.

Great French fries! Lots of outdoor seating too Been meaning to try this place for a long time and glad I did. Big projector on the wall playing the Warriors game inside (could still see it from our table outside) so that was fun and would probably be even more fun to watch a big game there with good company and food/drinks.

Such a a fun spot!! Just went this Saturday and got to experience their live comedy- super funny! 8:30-10pm Saturdays they have stand up, definitely worth stopping in for. Absolutely love this place and the energy here! Highly recommend ordering their Bloody Mary's, buffalo wings, and salads. Unique, fun spot; always a good time here

Really good fried pickle chips ... the best that I've found outside of Kentucky. The other appetizers we tried - corn dogs and wings were average. But I'd come back for the pickle chips.

Came to the Golden Squirrel for a Paint Nite / Yaymaker event which was scheduled for 11am.. so unusual for these types of events but oh well, perfect time for brunch! I did the "Build Your Own Bloody Bar" which was AMAZING! You get your choice of liquor, heat level, spices, fresh garnishes, and house-made pickled items. The pickled golden beets with maple and rye was sooo good I could have eaten an entire jar of them. I tried the corned beef hash which came with eggs over easy and a delicious chile crema. That may have been one of the best corned beef hash I have had. Usually they are pretty heavy and rich, but the Golden Squirrel's was unique and remained light even with all the meat and potatoes. I guess I'm only subtracting a star from my review is because the paint event was awkwardly set up and service was a little slow.

Precovid, this is was our go to happy hour spot after work. Great deals, crave worthy bar food, and a wonderful staff. They have done a great job in adjusting their business model to work through these challenging times. I was able to come with a few folks on a Thursday at 4:30pm. They have built a pretty impressive parklet in addition to their patio seating they already had. I shared a carafe of chardonnay with one of the ladies. For a bar, the salads are actually pretty darn good which is what I got this time. In an era where insta worthy cocktail bars seem to pop up more and more, you still need that neighborhood bar where you can order a beer, some tater tots, and watch football. This is that bar.

** 3 TVs+ projector+deviled eggs=love** Sooo yesterday wasn't too bad considering the Cavs played the Celtics and won (insert groan). The bar was slightly packed but we found 1 high table available :-) They have 2 TVs in the bar area - slightly odd because the bar shelves block your view down the middle . They also have a projector in the restaurant area and use the wall located near the entrance as a backdrop The good : - clean tables - TVs for sports games - appetizers: loved the pecorino deviled eggs with truffle The meh: - boo didn't care for the homemade cheese in his Geiger. He wanted REGULAR SLICED CHEESE not the melted goo thy make from mixing various cheeses . Still tastes good - but then - who has EVER had a bad burger ?! - parking on college is dismal

Really dislike giving meh reviews but went here the other day. The food (salad and two apps) took over 30 mins to come out and when it did, the fried pickles and wings were both really cold. I don't think I'll be coming back even though this is in my neighborhood and I wanted to enjoy it.

I have been here a few times and have always left happy. It has a outside patio and street park-let (is that the right term? ) They have a delicious croque madame that I enjoyed once again today. Usually I order one of their many great beers (Bling Pig is a personal favorite). Service is always great, our server (Julia?) was top notch. Also they host trivia Saturday around noon which is fun ( if you do well ).

Alright... it's time for an update, kiddies! Let me just say that Golden Squirrel is sooo much better this time around! They have definitely made some major improvements since my last visit. First of all, they now have a full service bar with a daily HAPPY HOUR! You know that's an automatic star in my book! Kidding! But seriously, the beers here are absolutely insane! They have such a great variety of drafts on tap and they are constantly rotating, so you will never get bored with the selection here. I was able to sample a few and ended up going with a pale ale wheat from Freewheel Brewing and a pluot with watermelon from Mission Trail. The pale ale wheat was light and tasty, but that watermelon beer was just O M G! It was a sweet and sour combo that just electrified my taste buds like whoa! I don't know how long that they'll have it since it's rotating, but if you're a sour beer lover.... GET IT NOW! It is absolutely scrumptious! The Golden Squirrel has over 20 different beers on tap and the majority of their drafts come from local breweries. Happy hour is Monday through Friday from 3-6 and 8:30-close! They offer a different daily discount on alcohol ($2 off Wine Wednesday, $2 off cocktails for Thirsty Thursday, etc) and select appetizers for $6 each. I ordered their happy hour squirrel fries and fish tacos, and portions sizes were aplenty! The squirrel fries were topped with house made American cheese, bourbon caramelized onions, and remoulade sauce. My bartender Tayler described them as something similar to the animal style fries that you would get at In-N-Out Burger. Truth be told, I have never had animal style fries before and discovered that it really isn't my thing. However, if you're into animal style, these fries might be for you. Those fish tacos though... FIRE! Those bad boys were crispy, filling, and loaded up with fresh guac! They were a little messy but shouldn't you be expecting that from tacos? Nevertheless, they were absolutely delicious! The interior has been very well maintainted and the bar setup is extremely appealing. It's a horseshoe bar with 3 large TV's that are viewable from either. The outside seating is wonderful and is even equipped with heat lamps for those chillier nights that will soon be coming around again. When I first walked in around 5:15, they had a pretty decent crowd that was already taking advantage of the happy hour. But once 6:30 rolled around, the people just started piling in! By 7 o'clock, the place was damn near a full house with most of the tables being occupied. I'm not sure if it was just because a game was set to come on, but they sure do have a nice following of people here. The service was amazing! I had actually recognized my bartender Tayler from another bar that I had previously been to once (one that shall remain nameless). I'm so happy that she's at the Golden Squirrel now because her bright smile fits in seamlessly. And let me tell you; that girl knows her beers! She recommended a few for me to try that I really enjoyed and actually ended up drinking that night. I was able to meet the owner Andrew, and he was extremely pleasant! Super social, interactive, and full of passion about his business. He even recognized me from my previous review on Yelp (he encouraged me to give them another try, and I'm so happy that I did!). I really enjoyed my time here, and I'm excited to come back again! I hear that they make a mean burger, so I guess I'll be chomping on that the next time that I'm there. Bottom line is: The Golden Squirrel is the new golden ticket! Great beers, great service, and a great atmosphere!

I rarely leave negative reviews, but I feel a review here is merited as a warning to others. I just had the worst wings of my life. The meat was unrecognizable as chicken. It has a vague mealy texture with no flavor other than the sauce on the outside. If it weren't for what appeared to be actual chicken bones inside, I would have sworn it was some fake, synthetic meat made in a laboratory. I had to stop at four as I couldn't bring myself to eat the last two. Of course, I only had the wings so I can't review the place as a whole, but it's hard to trust a place that would allow this kind of substance to pass for food.

We came here during the Halloween street event, a group of 3 parents and 3 infants. We placed our order and after waiting 55 minutes for appetizers we were told the food would be out in a matter of minutes. 10 minutes later I attempted to inform someone we needed to leave, a woman said let me find my husband. Our server then came out with 1/4 of the order which I asked to place in a to go box as we had to leave. I paid for the food and left the other two families to get their food when it became ready. I later found out that the other parents were told the order was canceled, although paid for. Unreal.

First time coming here. I came with a group of people and we were all pleasantly surprised by the options for wine, beer (on tap and bottled) , cocktails and food- many options! I got the cod fish tacos and the kale and romaine Caesar salad- salad was big and good I would get again and the tacos were good too! They have ample indoor space and outdoor space, they have a big projector in this outdoor area, when we were there they had the baseball game, seems like a great place to watch a game. I will be back!

I was craving Fish & Chips and I consulted Yelp and have tried many of the suggestions. I wanted a thick piece of cod in a light but crispy beer batter; and they didn't disappoint! It was a wonderful flavor and perfectly cooked. The chips are a touch thin for my taste. I want you all go and order the Grilled corn salad. It is all you want in a salad with crisp mixture of corn and goodies. You can also add a tasty portion of their fish or chicken. I liked that they had a clear path for pick ups.

The Golden Squirrel is convenient being walking distance from Rockridge BART. The ambiance is modern and nicely laid out with a bar area and dining space. They have a nice collection of beers, probably 20 on tap as well as a full bar. I ordered a few different beers throughout the night and enjoyed them all and thought they had a nice variety. For dinner, I ordered the Caesar salad and added chicken. The chicken was heavily charred which added a burnt taste to the salad that I wasn't particularly fond of. My boyfriend got the fried chicken sandwich. It was a large sandwich and had coleslaw that was nicely dressed that didn't leave the fried chicken feeling dry. He also really enjoyed the chips it came with. Overall I appreciate that the portions here are favorable and you won't leave hungry. I've been here twice now on a Thursday night. They had all the TVs on college football. When I asked to put the Sharks game on they took over half an hour. I had to ask again and finally someone switched it. The first time I came here I had a similar issue getting the game on except it took longer, which is frustrating when there are 4 TVs and the Sharks are a local team. If you're going to have TVs, use them and listen to what your patrons want and make it a priority.

To go during SIP.. this place is amazing. I have been a few times before but getting this to go, food still being incredible... On top of that, I also purchased a few grocery items, a pitcher of margarita (to go) and beer I requested (not on their menu from Temescal Brewery) I'm so grateful to have a restaurant like GS here, they really are going out of their way to be sure they are offering so much! Thank you for the delicious food and additional items during such uncertain times!

We stopped in here for drinks while we waited on our table at A nearby restaurant. Man was I happy with bar service and the lemon drop martini I ordered. Good Lord that bartender knew what she was doing. They were on point! We're holding out for the vegan food down the street but a great place to hang out.

Was fantastic when they first opened a few years ago. Really gone down hill. Posting 3 stars so hopefully they can get it back in shape. Last few times I've been here have been really lackluster. Much better options only a block away. I keep going back hoping for more. Disappointed again and again.

A decent amount of room inside, but they only used it for a line to buy drinks or food or close your tab or get a table. No kind of table service whatsoever. Slow service with only 1 food/drink runner, 1 cashier, and 1 bartender on a crowded Friday night. An OK selection of beer, though their QR code online menu was quite different than their actual menu. Many tables outside were spaced out, but quite a few were practically on top of each other near a big projector TV screen. No one who worked there seemed happy to be there or to be doing their job.

The vibes here were bad, they were condescending and not customer oriented. There are other good establishments in this area.

Great little neighborhood pub! The new owner has done a bang up job and I am very happy for this. Just enough beers but also a wine list and of course liquor. That aside, I had a chance to try out several of the appetizers andThese tasted excellent but the owner shared with me that they are prepared with top quality ingredients. No doubt the other reviews shared that there is plenty of seating inside but outside is great on a warm day or evening. Great for people watching too...Kudos and keep up the good work.

This is a really nice place off College Avenue. It's not too big like a large BWW. But its perfect size to go grab some food. There's a nice small outdoor patio too. Right near a Safeway as well. So my friend and I went here to watch Game 1 of the 2017 NBA finals. Go Warriors. and we got there pretty early but there was no one there! It was great because we were able to sit at the bar get some drinks for happy hour before the game started at 6. I ordered the burger which was pretty good. Not the greatest, but not bad at all. She is a vegan so we had some grilled asparagus, avocado toast, and some fries. I was't impressed by the fries because it looks like we got the bottom of the bag for fries.. weird as that was but the toast was great with the pickled red onions and the grilled asparagus was on point. Great place to go to for sports and just for everyday eats. A tad bit expensive, but its College Avenue in Rockridge... what'd you expect? Oh full bar too, that's a plus. Go Warriors. Cavs suck.

Come on down...and I mean down...as the Golden Squirrel is located below street level. Nice outdoor seating with easy views of the gigantic sports screens for checking out the games. We stopped in for Sunday brunch. Their menu is pretty standard with a couple variations. We had the fried chicken Benedict. It was ok, but could use a little umph. Service was nice and attentive. I can see this place as a great hangout on game day...

Their covid service needs to be evaluated. It took so long to receive 2 salads and 2 kids meals. The ordering process is terrible!! The restaurant seems completely overwhelmed. I think they have 1server I used to like this spot and hadn't been there in a while. I'm not going back. Kids complained that the mac and cheese and french fries weren't good. Sorry for this place.

Somehow their fried pickle chips have gotten even BETTER!! Service is always great and quick. Staff is very kind. I have tried every single restaurant in Oakland that serves fried pickles and the ones here are the absolute best. Plus the big frightening squirrel god that sits in the patio area is great ambiance.

Ah, the Golden Squirrel is quite literally golden- 5 stars all the way across town. I am basing my review around the great food and customer service, ambiance, and the fact that the friendly pub welcomes furry friends !!!! I was in town for a wedding so my boyfriend and I decided to check this place out for Sunday brunch! Not to mention, we wanted a spot where we can also watch game 4; Raptors vs. 76ers. The waitress was very attentive and knowledgeable when we asked questions about the menu. We decided to order the fried chicken sandwich and the intermezzo salad which were both delicious!! The fried chicken sandwich 5/5: Everything about this sandwich is on point! The flavors all compliment each other, which leaves you wanting seconds. The chicken was tender and moist which is key to a great chicken sandwich. It had just enough crisp so that the sandwich doesn't fall apart. Intermezzo salad: the fried garbanzo beans are a clever way to make this salad "brunch appropriate" The salad was perfectly dressed, and seasoned. Oftentimes I order a salad and it comes out looking like the lettuce just took a lap around an ocean of dressing. Not this salad though, it definitely gave me the Sunday salad satisfaction I needed.

Went here for take out food on Sunday night. Food is always solid. Had trouble ordering online. Seems like all their menu items were not listed on their online system. I called in my order instead, easy enough. My husband had the hamburger and fries which he said was excellent! I had rock cod tacos and a carnitas taco. Both were very good but the carnitas was spicy hot and salty! Yikes!! Too hot and salty for me but my husband loved it! They also have awesome Cubano sandwiches too when they're offered on the menu.
