Grand Porter, a Cafe Featuring Breakfast and Lunch, Is Coming Soon to Hubbard Richard | Eater Detroit

"A long-vacant 1890s Victorian house and adjoining brick storefront in the Hubbard Richard is being refurbished into a daytime restaurant and cafe by the team behind a nearby bistro. Positioned to open later this year, the project is still under construction and the owner is still recruiting a chef; plans focus on breakfast and lunch staples, on-site baked goods from pastry chef Camrey Smith, and a coffee program led by general manager Joel Jones (an Eater Award recipient known for menus blending beer, wine, tea, coffee and cocktails with influences drawn from French culture and its global legacy). The space includes a full kitchen (unlike the owner’s other bistro), seating for about 30 people, and potential outdoor seating on an adjacent lot; it will open initially without a liquor license but may pursue one later. The interior will be developed by the owner’s wife, a designer who shaped the aesthetic of the prior restaurant, and the ownership hopes the cafe will fill a local gap for daytime meeting and co-working spots. The owner’s background in real estate — including a widely reported 2021 landlord–tenant lawsuit that was dismissed — is part of the context around the expansion." - Serena Maria Daniels

We came in about 15 mins after open…it was very calm & luckily a sunny day. The building is very clean & bright. Love the live plants and understated holiday decorations. Food was excellent. I got the Breakfast Plate & my partner got a piece of the Ube Honey Cake with Coconut, both were very delicious!! Also tried their house made syrups the Spice & Salted Caramel lattes were both the right amount of sweet but could taste the coffee, perfect mix of espresso and sweet. Staff very friendly & personable as well I will absolutely be coming back & I dare say this is now one of my fav coffee/breakfast spots in Detroit :)

What a great new cafe this is! Perfectly named, since it's near the intersection of Grand and Porter. We enjoyed a lunch of a buckwheat galette with egg, an egg salad sandwich, cocoa and cappucino and of course a piece of that stunning multi-layer cake. A welcoming destination with different spaces depending on your mood, including a community table. Friendly and energetic staff and a menu that's strong with both vegan and non-vegan dishes.

The Porter is an absolute gem. From the moment I walked in, the space felt warm, welcoming, and beautifully designed. The staff were genuinely incredible: attentive without hovering, kind, organized, and clearly passionate about what they do. I tried the smoked chicken sandwich, the curry soup, and a Maritozzi, and every single thing was outstanding. The chicken sandwich was perfectly balanced: tender, flavorful, and layered with fresh greens and just the right amount of richness. The curry soup was comforting and aromatic, the type of bowl that makes you slow down so you don’t miss a single flavor. The Maritozzi was UNREAL. Pillowy soft, lightly sweet, and something I’ll be thinking about until I come back. Between the thoughtful menu, the relaxed atmosphere, and the stellar service, The Porter is easily one of my new favorite spots. Can’t wait to return and try more.

Such a wonderful cafe with the best vibe! Great selection of delicious breakfast, lunch, pastry, and beverage options (plus breakfast all day). I really enjoyed their spin on the full breakfast plate, especially the roasted root veg and two types of toast (sourdough and milk bread made in house). The service is wonderful, too. The staff there is really nice, they put a lot of love and care into the food and experience. The cafe itself is beautifully put together, full of light, and offers several seating options. Come and see for yourself what makes The Grand Porter so special!

This morning I got to sit and dine in and it was such a treat! I had an egg sandwich and avocado toast which were both delicious, and a hot matcha latte to drink was the perfect companion. I’m so excited to come hang out here often, the space is so cozy and I got to meet people and have great conversations.

I have not enjoyed eating out in a long time because the food is always so greasy. I got the Vegan avocado toast with a black coffee.....wow. Whoever is back there in the kitchen knows how to cook. The flavors were so refreshing. Also, they have a community table and when I sat down some of the other customers started chatting with me. I now have some new friends in the neighborhood. I am so glad this business chose our area. We definitely were in need of a cozy third place where friends and neighbors could hang out.

Quaint cafe offering amazing coffee and brunchy bites. Happy to find a cafe serving quality decaf in the area. Received great service when I visited a week or so after they opened. Everyone was in great spirits and the place had really positive energy.
