The Grand, York

Beautiful stay. We booked the grand heritage suite for a few days and it was brilliant. The staffing team were so helpful, polite and made us feel so welcome. The room service was on point and the breakfasts made getting out of that ridiculously comfortable bed that bit easier. Everything from valet parking to spa access was explained and made extremely clear days before check in. Great hotel with great staff. Really can't wait to visit again.

We've just returned home after 2 fabulous nights at the Grand Hotel. From the moment we arrived we had the best time. The service, especially, is impeccable. Everyone is so friendly, all the reception staff are so knowledgeable and happy to help with places to visit, to eat, drink, shop, absolutely everything! The rooms are comfortable, spotlessly clean, and peaceful. Breakfast is faultless, the choices are vast, vegan options too. Service is spot on, extremely efficient, and all done with the most friendly, cheery attitude. Nothing is too much trouble. We didn't dine here, but we did have drinks during the evening, and these too were delicious. It was a particularly busy time, with a great atmosphere, and we thoroughly enjoyed the evening. All in all a wonderful, relaxing time, and we'll definitely return. Thankyou, everyone.

A real classic hotel. Perfect service from start to finish (lovely door staff and porters). We stayed for a 40th birthday treat and had the taster menu in Legacy (do it!) and a spa afternoon. Breakfast is fab, the beds are so comfortable and it's all very luxurious and spacious. The new spa is wonderful

What a wonderful stay in York and thanks to The Grand York for being the center of the trip. Our room was large, well-decorated and very quiet, as we requested. Beautiful historic building but not old and creaky. We woke to a lovely breakfast every morning- highly recommend the breakfast addition to your stay. The bellmen were very warm and polite- always took good care of us morning and night. Warning- you must pre-book the swimming pool and spa as we were not able to use either as they were both fully booked- suspect it is a nice pool and spa, when booking room they did not warn us to pre-book use of pool and spa which is disappointing. Kids can journey to the fourth floor to meet the hotel bees that make the honey for the food and drink served at the hotel- very cool thing to do when you arrive. I’d like to learn about the cooking school on site. The location is superb. We walked to all events morning, day and night. If you want luxury then stay here. Highly recommend. We will return. Recently stopped here with my wife as a valentines/anniversary treat. Our trip never got off to the best of starts. I phoned 2 days before we were due to stay to find out about the parking as I have a big car it’s difficult to park some times. I was told by the concierge team that they had private valley parking at the hotel and a big car was not a problem at all. So when we arrived I was told the hotel parking was all full as it was the valentines weekend. And I should have pre booked. At no point did anyone tell me the parking was pre book able as obviously I would have pre booked. I was then told the only place local to park was the multi story car park round the corner. Upon parking my car there I scrapped the bumper getting around it as it was so tight. The door man was lovely and said this is really unacceptable as I had phoned before our stay to check parking out. I now have damage to my car that I have to deal with. The next thing we were told when we checked in was that we had a classic twin room booked. This was valentines weekend and I had come away with my wife and obviously wanted a double. The only option they offered was upgrading to a grand sweet. Which obviously wasn’t cheap but we decided we would like to share a bed so we did upgrade. We where promised a bottle of Prosecco was going to be sent up to the room for our inconveniences. Which I never asked for but agreed I would like that and it would be nice. We never received our bottle of Prosecco. Do I asked at reception and it eventually was sent up so late we couldn’t enjoy it and ended up just fetching it home with us the next day. Overall it’s a lovely hotel in a great location but after our experience I would not rush to stay here again. A hotel of this caliber charging these prices I expected better. Rooms and breakfast was lovely but feel as a whole most of the staff there need more training. Most annoying part was on the night of our stay we had a walk out and there was empty car spaces in front of the hotel so all of the trouble with parking could have easily been avoided as they obviously had space to accommodate our car.

We booked two rooms for a weekend and the rooms were fantastic, really high ceilings and very spacious and comfortable. The staff were all really engaging, but the cherry on the cake was that they offered us the use of a wheelchair for the weekend for my elderly mother - she wouldn't have seen as much of York if we hadn't have had it. Top marks! If you want an amazing restaurant, go to Los Moros.

My husband and I stayed here on our wedding night (20th Sept) and it was absolutely delightful. We arrived just after midnight and were checked in promptly by a very kind lady at reception. Our room was beautiful and there was complementary champagne, cake and a lovely card waiting for us. We stayed for two nights before we headed off on our honeymoon and every staff member we encountered was lovely. Sadly the spa was shut (which we were informed when we booked) but we did have a delicious evening meal in the hotel restaurant on our second night which was great. My highlights (I’m vegetarian) were the burrata, truffle fries and cauliflower steak. Thank you to all the team for a fantastic stay and we hope to come back to celebrate our wedding anniversary 😊

Best experience, booked for my friends birthday and they went above and beyond so we could have the best time. We had complimentary drinks on the night and another at breakfast ||Room was cozy, great selections for coffee . Bathroom is stunning also |Robes and slippers were great , especially for the spa||The new spa was gorgeous! Definitely made you want to stay longer , was so relaxing and we feel so refreshed, didn’t feel like we had to wait for anything either , it was also great you can get poolside drinks . ||The 3 course dinner , though limited options for the winter pack was lovely , the soup was star of the show 😍||Breakfast had alot to choose from and was delicious ||Thank you!

This is a lovely hotel in an excellent location. The concierge and valets were outstanding-helpful, attentive, and very personable. The one gentleman shook all of our hands as we left which was so nice. We had breakfast at the Rise twice, very good, and dinner once, which was good though only as one server was working our side of the busy dining room, it was slow. We stayed in the modern wing in a family room which was spacious and lovely. In terms of negatives, the mattress was hard and lumpy, and there was the only one small hook to hang towels and robes, so not much room for our party of three. I mention this because the Grand has a sustainability focus and encourages guests to re-use towels, which we did: more hooks are needed. The reading lamps on the headboard did not work. The major problem we had was the temperature of our room: the thermostat read 16 but it was more like 20; too warm for sleeping. I called down to reception and concierge and there was no answer - multiple times - I think perhaps the phones were malfunctioning. I reached an operator who said she'd leave a note as she was leaving in five minutes. I went down to the front desk and the staff member told me she could adjust it from a control panel in the lobby (?), however, the room stayed too warm. This definitely took away from the experience as I didn't sleep well and expected better from a five star hotel. Lastly, and this is small, but the greenery out front (topiaries and flowers) and in the hallways are plastic, again, not five star. For a hotel focused on sustainability, natural plants would be much more suitable.

Ask for an upgrade. Rooms are SMALL. VERY SMALL. The concierge is simply AMAZING and can help you with all your needs. Very VERY attentive and multitasking. The hotel is old and overwhelmingly big, but the location couldn't be better and the buffet breakfast with their beetroot smoked salmon was something we are STILL talking about. One of the spa employees was a real ditz, killing a star off the review. But on another visit, we had a tour of the vault, because my curious george husband HAD to see it (that is where the manicures happen). Upgraded room was super spacious and made for a lot of comfort with all the ammenities that make a "getaway" vacation special!

Overall stay was very pleasant and comfortable. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the doorman in a top hat and tailcoat, he seems to be a veteran, it was warm personable and on par to the level of a 5-star hotel. We booked 2 suites for a party of 4 and each room was different as they used to be old offices for the Northern Railway as explained by the porter that brought up our luggages. The suites were huge and amenities were what I expected, I loved that they offer Molton Brown for your shampoo/conditioner/body lotion, pillows and duvet were heavenly and I absolutely loved they have towel warmers. However, the reason for the 2 star is due to some of the staffs' less agreeable attitudes during breakfast (included in the booking) served in one of the restaurants. The food offering is expansive, they have a cold and hot buffet style choice plus A La Carte such as your egg Benedict. My last breakfast here, I was greeted by a rather cold waiter, my partner is lactose intolerant and asked the waiter if he had any recommendations from the A La Carte menu, the server was less than pleased and expressed an exasperated expression that he was asked this and didn't even try to give any advice...he instead went ahead with the rest of our party's orders like he couldn't wait to get away from us. Later on, I realized he treated the table next to us completely different...he knew his manners and even calmly asked the lady if she wanted juice after she ordered coffee...comparably he didn't even bother asking me...didn't ask our table with a kind tone at all so it made me realize he purposely treated our party differently. Now, I just want to be clear we are a Chinese party and the other table were White, it made me suspect a level of racism was at works here....even when I went over to the hot buffet place and asked the staff for a fried egg the lady was exasperated. None of other staff made me feel this way except for those 2 staffs at the breakfast place. How are we any different from other customers?! Just because we are Asian, we are treated with clearly less respect like we cannot tell? I thought if anywhere, I shouldn't find racism in a 5-star hotel, the breakfast experience left a bitter taste in my mouth...we didn't pay for this to be treated like we are less. If the incident at breakfast didn't occur, I would gladly give this hotel 5 stars but please vet your staff for racism. It is unacceptable. I will not recommend this hotel to anyone of non-white descent..or if you decide to stay here go somewhere else for breakfast if you want to start your day right.

Excellent hotel. Regal and posh. Rooms are wonderful. Service is exquisite. Close to everything within the confines of the York walls. We stayed 9 days and enjoyed every day. Highly recommend.

York was a pit-stop on our way to Edinburgh, recommended by our travel advisor. We are so glad we visited! York itself is a beautiful and fun little place. We enjoyed walking around this quaint town. Many shops and restaurants, nice parks, and a lot of interesting history. It was busy but did not feel like it was bustling. The Grand is in a prime location - Less than a 5-minutes walk from the train station and then right at the opening to the town so you can easily take a day to stroll through and see everything. We enjoyed our stay at the hotel. The exterior architecture is gorgeous. The room was large and updated. We enjoyed an evening in the bar and took an hour to relax in their spa facilities. The food in the restaurant was not particularly memorable but still good. While overall a very nice place, some of the interior did feel like it needed some TLC - the hallways, mainly. Finally, I must highlight our experience with Wayne and Anna. Both were incredibly friendly and helpful. Wayne in particular walked us through a map of the town and highlighted several good sights for us to see. He was genuine, energetic and welcoming upon each greeting. Wayne alone makes us want to return! We highly recommend York and The Grand.

Terrible customer service and low quality food at the Grand Gala Ball of New Year's Eve in the Grand York. We were served canapés to begin with, neither the taste or the presentation were up to the standards set for such highly recognised hotel. Further, the ingredients on some of the canapés (ratatouille) were exactly the same served on one of the starters (and it wasn't even good and highly suspicious of left over reuse) The food served was absolutely not reflective of the expensive night (200 pounds per person), it was of low standards, with no flavour and simple presentation. The servers were nice and the musicians good, however, I could not enjoy the night because just after finishing my meal I was feeling severely nauseated and had to leave immediately. At home I had the most repulsive projectile vomiting I ever had in my life. My partner suffered indigestion all night. And that was our triumphant entrance in the New Year. I was not drunk neither sick. Immediately after vomiting I was relieved and only felt tired and bloated the rest of the night. This is highly suspicious for a rapid toxin of food/human origin consumed during the meal at the Gran York. I could be understanding because these situations can happen everywhere. However, the Grand York has not behaved as grand as its name suggests with my complain. They have absolutely refused to provide any sort of compensation and have hired the services of a 3rd authority that while could have behaved in a professional manner, does not provide absolute evidence that I did not surfer of food poisoning at the Grand York. The reason is simple, I cannot prove it an neither can the Grand York disprove it. I was not sick enough to attend the emergency hospital, therefore I have no samples to analyse and prove my intoxication. They have not analysed all food that I consumed because by the time that was requested, at least a week later (even that I informed them the following day) the food was obviously gone. And they have refused to test their staff for Staphylococcus aureus carrier status (which is the most common source of this kind of rapid clinical signs). I am deeply disappointed with this hotel of such high reputation and particularly with his duty manager Elliot Carroll , which has treated me with a profound condescending attitude. I DO NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE TO VISIT THIS HOTEL.

My favourite hotel in Yorkshire and possibly England! The staff are so friendly and welcoming, the service exemplary and the rooms beautifully fitted out with every possible extra...even Moulton Brown mouthwash! The restaurant is also superb, with a really imaginative take on a range of dishes. Had lamb last time and I can honestly say it was the best I've tasted. Stay at this hotel!

This is a review for The Rise, the restaurant within the Grand Hotel & Spa. Food and drink were good, and the atmosphere can't be beat. Service, however, not on par with the location. There for tea, we ordered the Hendrick's Tea up charge and the staff member was obviously new, so she had to grab the menu book to see what we were speaking of. This carried on for every tea the 6 of us ordered. Obviously new, she was very unprepared for service. At the mid-point of our tea, we asked for another round of Hendrick's pots. The same staff member asked if we were reordering the entire tea service again! A few moments later, another staff member came by and told me that the pots would cost the up-charge difference between the regular tea and the Hendricks tea. This was acceptable and I ordered. When the bill arrived, the extra pots of tea £25 each, totaling £50! Neither of the staff members could be found as we were towards the end of our service window, so another staff member came over when I motioned for her. She told me that the price was right and that this is a very confusing up charge for the staff and guests. Everyone at the table assured her that the we were told this was sold as a repeat of the original up charge, not £25 a pot. She finally offered to take one of the pots off the bill. Another very odd thing is that we asked for our remaining sweets to be boxed up, but in order to get them from staff, we had to sign waivers to release the hotel and restaurant from any liability. Weird! When we arrived back to our vacation flat, they had not packed any of the savory items, only the sweet items we had left. Total bill was over £230. We have eaten at many nice places while on holiday, but this was the largest regret we had of our two week trip through the UK. I'd never do it again at this location.

This may have been the nicest hotel I've stayed at. It was beautiful, centrally located, and very quiet. The staff was friendly and attentive.

I'm currently writing this from my room in the Grand Hotel and just have to stay that this has been one of the nicest hotels I've stayed at this far. I don't want to leave! The history of the building is amazing and the location is right near the train station yet easily walkable to the center of town. For me, the small touches of this hotel sets it apart: concierge escorted me to my room and gave me tips on local sights to visit. Room is immaculate with heated floors in bathroom, robes and slippers for use, lip balm provided during turn down service, Molton brown toiletries, comfy bed, and most importantly of all the speakers in the bathroom that play sound from the tv. It's the little things!

This hotel is great. And the new restaurant RISE is world class. Beat food in York by far. Plates are Tapas style. Small plates and all great. Slightly pricey - but well worth it.

The rooms are very nice and like ones in London; however, I came to breakfast and ordered the pancakes. They were pre-cooked, inedible and like oily potato cakes or doughnuts.

We have stayed in other hotels in York but the Grand is by far our favorite. It is in a great location - a short walk from the station and from the center of York, not to mention the restaurants and pubs nearby. In an old building, the owners have (unlike other nearby hotels) carefully updated the rooms to make a modern, luxurious yet not overly stuffy experience. Our room is large and has plenty of storage space, has a separate bathroom and a shower room, a giant (comfortable) bed, free wifi and decent TV service. The only potential negative is that the view is less good than some other nearby hotels, but there's a limit to the amount you stare out of the window and I prefer a good room to a good view. The staff are attentive enough without being overbearing and the bar has not just good food but many whiskeys: what more could a guest need?
