The Best Restaurants and Bars in San Diego’s Gaslamp Neighborhood | Eater San Diego

"The signature restaurant of the historic U.S. Grant Hotel is always a good bet; try the Grant Grill beef burger or seared scallops. Desserts, like lemon-lime crème brulee, are also a must, along with cocktails like the Fannie Chaffee Grant, a tequila drink with dry vermouth and pamplemousse." - Helen I. Hwang

We have been coming to the Grant Grill at the US Grant hotel for years, usually when attending an event at the Civic Theater. The grill has always been exceptional, until now. In addition, we arrived a bit early and were told that there were other reservations ahead of us and that we could wait in the bar and someone would notify us. Our reservation time came and went, no one came and we had to track someone down to be seated. We made a reservation, but we’re seated at the back by the kitchen door (very noisy and annoying). As reference, no one was seated at any number of tables that would have been preferable for the time we arrived and for the entire time we were there. The food was mid-to-poor compared to what we have had at the grill before. No flavor, presentation was not appetizing and my spouses salmon was cool. As there are so many great alternatives in the downtown area, we expected far better from The Grant Grill. We were extremely disappointed. Some reviewers may exaggerate, I am not. The wait staff, aside de from the front of house, was great.

The Grant Grill is undoubtedly a feast for the eyes. Nestled in the heart of the city, the restaurant exudes a timeless elegance that draws you in the moment you step through the door. We visited on a Friday night, and getting a reservation was refreshingly easy. The soft glow of ambient lighting, combined with the soothing melodies of live jazz—featuring a delicate mix of piano and saxophone—set the perfect backdrop for an evening of relaxation. However, the music leaned a little too heavily into “sleepy” territory, making it more of a lull than a lively accompaniment to dinner. Despite the beautiful surroundings and impeccable service, the food, unfortunately, did not live up to the same high standard. My friends all opted for the steak special, but the excitement quickly fizzled when the knives struggled to make their way through the tough cut. While the flavor wasn’t unpleasant, it failed to stand out in a way you’d expect from a signature dish. As for my meal, I went with the lobster gnocchi, hoping for something indulgent and flavorful. What arrived was a dish that felt more like a missed opportunity. While it wasn’t terrible by any means, it was far from the rich, decadent experience I had anticipated. The lobster was fresh, but the overall composition lacked the punch and depth needed to elevate it beyond just “okay.” The warm herb bread served in the beginning was probably my favorite part of the meal. In the end, the Grant Grill nails its ambience but falls short in delivering a memorable dining experience. With a setting so ideal, the food has the potential to match, but as of now, it seems to be playing catch-up.

Absolutely incredible food, ambiance and service! We came for the Easter Brunch and they offer ordering of one main entree which all were incredible as well as going up for the buffet with delectable options such as crab, shrimp, charcuterie boards and a pancake/waffle station that was so good. Highly recommended! Definitely get reservations for Easter brunch if you get a chance! They also had live music which was lovely 😊

Eating here was quite an experience. One that i would recommend to all. We had amazing food from a spectacular staff. They were on it, friendly and informative. Their house Old Fashion was delicious and smooth. Plus this place is within stumbling distance of the Civic Theatre. We found our new regular spot when catching a show. Can't wait to visit again.

Google
This place may not be Michellin Star Restaurant, I think this place can eventually receive one. First of all, the service and atmosphere are outstanding. It's a very classic and luxurious interior, making this place a great place to dine for important events. I had several dishes, including ravioli and steak burger with soup and dessert, and they were absolutely wonderful! I strongly recommend this place to anyone.

Arrived early for our reservation, sitting at the bar for a pre-dinner drink. The bartender was friendly and provided our drinks with a smile. We both took notice of the beautiful decor, surroundings and atmosphere. The hostess took us to our table promptly at our reservation time. We were somewhat surprised with the limited items that were available. Overall, the food was tasty. The only complaint I had was with the waiter. Had to get his attention a couple of times regarding a couple of items by waving him to our table. Have already recommended the restaurant to friends.

Yelp
We always go back to this place when we are attending an event at the Civic Center. The lounge is amazing and constantly has great food, great service and lovely ambiance. Prices are also good which is a g very nice surprise these days. I can't recommend this place enough. If you are in the area, please try them out, you won't be disappointed. Share your experience as well. Happy meals!

Yelp
LUNCH DINING EXPERIENCE A very lovely experience. Enrique and Roberto took care of us. They were very pleasant and kind. Last time we were here was for Dinner. I actually enjoyed my lunch experience more. We ordered the following... *COBB SALAD- Artisan Mix Greens, Pancetta, Hard Boiled Eggs, Cucumber, Cherry Tomato, Avocado, Smoked Blue Cheese Dressing I Added Wild Tiger Shrimp *GRANT GRILL ALL NATURAL BEEF BURGER -Comte Cheese, Bacon, Caramelized Onions, Bread and Butter Pickles, Butter Leaf Lettuce, Brioche Bun *GRILLED CHICKEN SANDWICH -Arugula, Fried Green Tomatoes, Fontina Cheese, Tarragon Aioli, Onion Batard The entrees were all delicious. The presentation was top notch. We heard they have really delicious burgers here. That's definitely true. I also enjoyed my salad with the nice plump shrimp. The chicken sandwiches were filling. On the down side, the fries could have been crispy and their "ketchup" was different. For dessert we chose... *LEMON-LIME BRÚLÉE -Coconut Curd, White Chocolate, Shortbread *STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE- Semifreddo, Grilled Pound Cake, Rhubarb Vanilla Gastrique Again, beautiful presentation. The both were yummy but not overpowering sweet which is nice. Overall excellent experience. I actually enjoyed the lunch over dinner experience.

Yelp
During our recent stay at the Grant, we were fortunate enough to dine twice at Grant Grill. Our lunch was outstanding and here is why - service was perfect (and I do not use that word lightly), ambiance was well suited to our lunch meeting and the food was out of this world (mock turtle soup is not to be missed! Halibut special was one of the best halibut dishes I've ever enjoyed). Later the same day, we had dinner at the Grill. We started off by enjoying the amazing fresh bread baked onsite each day (we wanted to eat 2 loaves, it was so good), and moved on to the soup of the day (creamy mushroom - so decadent and delicious) and the caesar salad. For my entree I enjoyed the seared ahi and my husband had the ribeye. We both cleaned our plates. Everything was fabulous. The service was impeccable. I highly recommend Grant Grill and we cannot wait for our next visit.

Yelp
What the focaccia just happened in my mouth!? Seriously the bread they start you with is a domed focaccia that is mind blowing. I'm not a grimlin for bread but ima tell you that we will go back just to have this bread. The rest of the food was ok. Some of it was good, some of it was meh. We absolutely will be back to try more things and see if it was just the items we ordered that were ok. They have valet and they are very close to both theaters downtown so it's a great place to grab a drink and dinner before a show. Our server was over the top amazing so between him and the bread, we will be back!

Yelp
We came in for drinks and light bites and had a great time. The Smashing Pumpkin was a delicious sweet cocktail that is only available during the holiday season. Lieutenant Cave was a strong martini that was well blended. The ceasar salad was fantastic - it had that wow factor at the first bite. The place is old school classy as a historic hotel should be. Logan, our server, was awesome - he was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and drinks. I've eaten dinner here once a few years ago and still remember the duck and Pinot Noir I had. I would definitely return again.

Yelp
It wouldn't be a staycation at The US Grant without brunch at Grant Grill! I'm forever torn between savory and sweet, but you needn't make that difficult choice here as your server will immediately grace your table with complimentary house-made mini muffins in a variety of flavors. Sweet tooth thus satisfied, head directly to the savory items on the menu (do not pass go, er, griddle ;)! Both the Seared Duck Breast (Leek and Citrus Risotto, Fried Duck Eggs, Hollandaise Sauce) and Jumbo Lump Crab Quiche (Corn, Bacon, Celery, White Cheddar Cheese, Tarragon Cream Sauce) are elevated choices - the latter also comes with super crispy crushed potatoes and a simple but fresh salad - and will keep you full until dinner time. Service is attentive and accommodating, but be sure to check your bill because sometimes the menu prices don't match... Rather unexpected for an upscale restaurant, so I do hope they fix this!

Yelp
I highly recommend Grant Grill. A friend and I were going to see a show down the street. We decided to have a light dinner. we sat in the bar area. We opted for two dirty martinis with blue cheese, stuffed olives. They were fantastic! I ordered the Caesar salad with the white anchovies and added the grilled shrimp for a protein. The Caesar was amazing! I noticed a table of four people next to us who ordered Caesar salad as well. Definitely a fantastic choice. We asked our waiter for some bread to go with our salads. They have a lot of different breads to choose from. Sourdough, focaccia, and crackers, I believe. I look forward to dining there again.

Yelp
The food was not good and the service was not up to par for "fine dining." I had a mediocre beet pesto citrus salad and my steak was not worth the price. The potato gratin was gross, as was the chocolate cake dessert. The bread was the only thing I loved. Also, there were mosquitos buzzing around the table, which I've never experienced in an indoor restaurant before. One followed me back to my hotel room.

Yelp
The history of the hotel and restaurant is fascinating. It was built by President Ulysses S Grant's son in 1910. The Grant Grill restaurant became known as a dining spot for businessmen and politicians. So much so that in the 50s, women weren't allowed in until 3pm. In 1969 a group of women staged a sit-in as they dined on turtle soup. (So naturally I had to try their legendary mock turtle soup). The truffle gnocchi was delicious but the complimentary focaccia loaf was amazing! I almost ate the whole thing myself! The cocktails were quality and the waiter even brought me out a special bite to try. It was a luxurious dining experience in a breathing restaurant Instagram: @msbusyblonde

Yelp
My family has been dining at the Grant Grill since the 1960's. That was at the time women were not permitted into the dining room until 3:00 p.m. The room was reserved for top businessmen, movers and shakers only. One day in the early 1970's, a group of brave female lawyers stormed the door at noon and sat down and demanded to be served lunch. After a few hours of a sit-in, the women were finally served and the Grant Grill thereafter changed forever. Last night I dined with my Aunt Virginia at the Grant Grill. I like to sit in the semi-circular booths along the Fifth Avenue window. There was a bit of a glitch with the wine list. I ordered a French Burgundy and was advised that the only French wine the restaurant had was a Rhone Valley Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Despite the fact there were several French wines identified on the wine list [none of which were available], the Grant Grill manager promised the issue will be addressed. Service by Samuel was superb. He is a true professional and very knowledgeable about the menu. After the wine glitch, Samuel was able to offer an off-the wine-list 2018 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon for $60.00 off the price the wine would be marked when it was added to the list. For dinner, we selected the plat du jour of a steak topped with bone marrow and shrimp. On the side, was a tartelette of Ricotta and cherry tomatoes, along with an onion marmalade. After the main course, Samuel graciously bought us "on the house" a Crème Brulee with a candle. Thereafter, we enjoyed an Irish Coffee. Because my aunt had her wedding reception on December 4, 1949 in the Rose Room banquet room downstairs [now called "Bivouac"] Samuel kindly guided us out of the restaurant to the Concierge to be shown the Rose Room. However, the concierge stated she was unable to do so--- "I have to leave" she said-- but she kindly offered us some vintage photographs of the banquet room. Accordingly, we walked downstairs on our own to see the room. As expected, and as we had been advised, it was locked. However, a very kind employee named Bob came over and let us into the banquet room, so Virginia could see where she had her wedding reception on December 4, 1949. Moreover, Bob provided us with a fascinating summary of the history and lore of the hotel. Thank you so much, Bob! The Grant Grill validates parking with the hotel valet, so all you pay is a reduced rate of $10.00. The valet, Ethan Emerson, was so kind and welcoming. He delivered our car with a smile and was a wonderful representative of the U.S. Grant hospitality team. Bravo to Samuel, Bob and Ethan!

Yelp
Another great place in downtown San Diego. The US Grant Hotel has been recently remodeled. It is beautifully appointed. We stopped in the bar for expresso martinis, Caesar salads and cheeseburgers. The service as friendly and professional. Drinks and food prepared perfectly. This is an iconic place in San Diego. It's also a great place for brunch.

Yelp
First time staying in SD. One of the best burgers of my LIFE!!! The Comte cheese and bacon sang a harmony in my mouth I didn't know could exist. The burger was dripping wet but the brioche bun held it together quite well. This burger FUCKS. I know you won't believe me, but you have to get this burger. I generally don't think hotels have good food and I'll forever change that view. I'm shaking right now it was that good. My wife also has some nibbles and was like wtf? This is heaven. Trust me! Hotel is 100+ years old and the service was on point. Take a date here, it's fancy but unassuming.

Yelp
We both had the Cobb salad with chicken! It was excellent and also the chicken was very tender and fresh. We are in the hotel and said why not try it.

Yelp
The food is not good. It looks good but doesn't taste very good. I had the grilled cheese and it was honestly gross. The cheese was watery and made my sandwich soggy. The caesar salad I shared as well. The chicken was gamey, so gross. I had a latte with vanilla but then I was told no vanilla. We also were not brought table sauce such as ketchup or Tabasco. I had to wait until someone came back to our table to ask for it. The food was just not flavorful. How do you mess up French fries? I will not be back. However, our server was very professional and polite.

Yelp
I'm a little torn about this place. My husband and I came here to celebrate Christmas on the 23rd of December. The restaurant is located inside the Grant hotel, needless to say the venue is beautiful. Typically, my type of place. Going into the restaurant was a little chaotic. We had reservations, and we had to wait in line to get seated for a good 15-20 min. There was only one hostess, who was trying her best but unfortunately she was very slow and/or they needed two hostesses. We are lactose intolerant so a lot of times when we order, restaurants have to recreate their plates for us. We normally ask to sub vegetables for any kind of mashed (since they have butter) and things like that. In the Grant restaurant, every table gets a focaccia with butter and an amuse bouche. Ours made it to the table, although both had dairy in it. We had to constantly remind the staff of our condition. For an appetizer, we ordered the smoke Spanish octopus, it was delicious but very small portion. Entrees were the Irish Steelhead and Wild Boar Pork Chop and Pork Belly. I was disappointed with the Irish Steelhead, the server should have warn us that this plate doesn't serve well for lactose intolerant people. I ended up paying $42 for salmon and undercooked cauliflower. The Wild Boar was good. Overall, the experience was suboptimal considering the dollar amount we spend.

Yelp
We had dinner and breakfast here and everything was great. Especially I loved grilled octopus and crab quiche. Portion might be a little small and a little pricy but it's worth it. Thank you for friendly and attentive service our waiter Jose and busser Jose, making our meal special.

Yelp
This place was outstanding! I highly recommend it! My wife and I came here before our show at the civic. The wait staff was very prompt and accommodating. The food was out of this world and loved the bread and duck! Will definitely come back!

Yelp
We stopped in here for breakfast because we were staying in the hotel. The inside was beautiful. Service was great! Ordered a cappuccino and latte to start. Both were fantastic! To eat, I ordered the market omlette and my wife had the egg white omlette. The flavors were really great in both. Everything tasted freshly made and not canned or bottled-even the catsup. It was a perfect meal and great service.

Yelp
Ate here for breakfast and couldnt have been more pleased with the service. It was the day after my birthday and I had to work, however my wife was able to join me and we decided to stay at the US Grant. The restaurant's ambiance and quality was seen throughout with a delicious scrambled egg breakfast and free refills on not only coffee but also Orange Juice as welll (a rarity). I highly recommend that anyone staying at the US Grant consider having breakfast on hotel grounds - you won't regret it!

Yelp
I recently stayed at the US Grant Hotel & grabbed a quick bite to eat at the Grant Grill which can be accessed from the lobby. The restaurant is divided - One side is more upscale with white table cloths, while the other side is more relaxed by the bar. That's where I chose to dine, work, and people watch. I ordered a Caesar salad and added their catch of the day which was steelhead. Tasted amazing. Service was perfect from start to finish. Atmosphere was great, lively but not at all loud. Lights were on the dimmer side. I'd love to come back and try more menu items.

Yelp
First off! The service is amazing here. We were served by Rose twice and she was so helpful and her hospitality was unmatched! The ambiance is beautiful, very presidential and the live music was a stunning touch. The drinks are crafted so well. I highly recommend!

Yelp
The Grant Grill is a restaurant located in The US Grant, A Luxury Collection Hotel. It's a fine dining establishment accessible through the hotel lobby. Upon walking in, you are greeted with an elegant, traditional decor. We experienced both dinner and breakfast service at Grant Grill. Before I talk about the food, I have to mention the service for both was exceptional. The waitstaff was attentive but not looming, and had very professional demeanors. Breakfast service- We were walk-ins. The hostess was very friendly and inquired about our trip to San Diego while we were led to the booth. Upon seating, our drink orders were promptly taken and some complimentary small muffins were provided. The wait time for the food was low and it came out pretty quick. Now here's the thing about Grant Grill that was consistent- you can tell the food is higher quality, but it doesn't taste all that great. For my breakfast entree I got half an order of French toast and a half order of Belgian waffle with all the accoutrements on the side. The "Seasonal" toppings that accompanied the meal were flavors I didn't really care for.The pumpkin spiced butter was ridiculously over the top spiced, the other butter that was brought out, I could not figure what it was supposed to be- the fruit compotes were fine, but I kept them to the side and dressed the waffle and French Toast with butter and syrup. I'm perfectly happy to skip the fancy topping, but even with the waffles, French Toast and syrup, I've had much better iterations elsewhere. So while it was good, it wasn't great. Dinner- We had reservations for 6pm. The restaurant at the time was only about 25% full. Once again, the service here is incredible and everything in that regard was exceptional. The food is pricey, so my expectations were high. After you place your order, some fresh focaccia bread is brought out. This was some of the softest bread I've ever eaten and it was very good. It set the bar pretty high for my expectations of the meal, but I didn't really care much for my entree. I ordered the Irish Steelhead (fish), because looking at the entrees, this one appeared to check off the most boxes of things that sounded good to me that were included in the entree. It came with a shrimp mousse, Meyer lemon yogurt, kale and a couscous patty. I placed my order and had an idea of what all of this might be like. When my food came out, I was surprised that none of what came out was remotely like what I had envisioned, which is totally fine. It happens often where you see a menu description and it's somehow completely different. My favorite element of the dish was the shrimp mousse, which is nothing like a mousse consistency. It's texture reminded me of the filling for a gyoza dumpling. The next best thing on my plate was the black kale. I think it was flash fried and was pretty good. The rest of the elements on the plate were okay, but my least liked was the couscous patty. I didn't care for the spices it was seasoned with. It surprised me because I through those would have been one of the better parts of the dish. I love couscous, just not this interpretation of it. Finally dessert- We got the $14 Basque Cheesecake. How do you go wrong with cheesecake? It was awful. This cheesecake was dry, not creamy at all and all the components were unsatisfying. It came with poached pears- which I love, but I absolutely did not like these. It also had caramelized Rice Krispies which were blah. I didn't understand the point of view for this dish because none of it seemed to harmonize. I always look forward to dessert, and this dish completely missed the mark. Overall, it's difficult to give this place 3 stars because the team delivers exceptional service and the restaurant is gorgeous; but it's hard to overlook the fact that I didn't fully enjoy the food and it's doubly hard when the prices are so high. Maybe with different seasonal items, I may have found things more to my liking, but the food was mostly disappointing.

Yelp
Got a chance to try some of their delicious appetizers at a tasting menu tonight. The charred octopus was amazing and the arenchini with saffron creame and chorizo might have been my favorite. The crostini with creame and fig jam was a huge surprise! There was a pepper sauce on the flat bread that I think was romesco was amazing. The restaurant is so decadent and gorgeous and the service was phenomenal

Yelp
I've been here once before when we celebrated our anniversary with a weekend stay at The Grant. ...one of my favorite meals ever! Came back for lunch ...superbowl sunday...but we were at a dance competition at the Westin. Daughter didn't want to leave the event between her dances...she stayed at watched her friends compete. I wanted a sit down meal (i was exhausted...this was day 3 of the competition). we decided on Grant grill. it was Brunch time... soo... It is expensive... but it is good... service is stellar... I wasn't too excited about the brunch menu...but that's because i'm not a brunch kinda gal... I want to come back for dinner soon ...my anniversary is coming up again!

Yelp
Stayed at the great upscal US Grant hotel and thought this would be an equally great experience - sadly it was just good not great. The ambiance while nice, feels like it's missing warmth and welcome While the staff was always curious and friendly, the big killer for this place is the food. The dry aged rib eye my wife had was good and cooked properly but the accompanying potatoes were bland. The snow peas w almonds were however, pretty tasty. I had the boar chops w pork belly and orzo. The boar chop was cooked right but was roo. Temp when it got to the table and quickly got cold. The pork belly was similarly tempet. There was no where near enough sauce - just a fancy dribble - to make up for the lean chops. The pork belly on the plate, two sticks making an x were almost an afterthought. There was maybe a tablespoon of orzo. I'd fpgive this dish one star by itepself. All in all this was an OK experience but no where near the caliber of the exquisite hotel. Reserve a room at the hotel, but find a better restaurant to make your special night complete! .

Yelp
4.400 stars rounded up. An excellent meal was had here with some good friends. We went on a Friday night, where there was a live Jazz singer with piano accompaniment, which provided for a nice environment to have a nice meal. Decor is a bit dated, which dark woods, and travertine floors -- felt a little stuffy and not in a good way. The food was excellent. Bread service was to die for with pretzel style rolls fresh out of the oven. I had an excellent salad and their curry barramundi entree. Would highly recommend those. My partner had the mock turtle soup which he liked and the vegetarian wellington, which he found just OK. Very not crowded especially for a weekend night.

Yelp
The hotel reservation we made came with complimentary breakfast at the Grant Grill. Usually when you think of hotel breakfasts, you're probably thinking of boring old stations with your continental breakfast sitting on a little candle to keep it warm... but Grant Grill is just completely the opposite. The dining room is gorgeous with high ceilings and natural light seeping through the windows. And the food? I wanted to try something new every day and nothing disappointed! We were lucky enough to stay there 3 days, and considering all the potential breakfast/brunch places in SD, we were more than excited to wake up every morning to head downstairs to the Grant Grill. I have a bit of a sweet tooth, so I tried both the citrus ricotta pancakes and waffles. The pancakes were extremely filling, despite the portion looking a little small. My absolute favorite were the waffles - it had this divine honey mousse and honey streusel. It was this perfect balance of sweet and crunchy, with that punch of honey at the end. I also opted for the Grant Breakfast one day, which is a classic that you can't go wrong with. We also were able to visit Grant Grill Lounge for drinks. All the servers were incredibly knowledgable and gave great recommendations. We came back the following day and the servers even remembered us and what drinks we ordered! Overall, I was incredibly satisfied with my experience here and am definitely looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
I have been going there for forty years! I have never had a bad, or even mediocre, meal or cocktail. Lunch is always perfect and so are all of the dinner choices. Tonight I had the scallops-amazing!! My guest had the mock turtle soup (no turtles are used in it!!) and the citrus salad. Their focaccia bread is worth the trip downtown. Service is always impeccable. It is a beautiful spot and always makes me happy we went there!!! It is a beautiful hotel and restaurant and makes you remember what service is all about!

Yelp
About the 2023 NYE 6 course menu: PROS: - we booked a reservation for two ahead because we were staying with the hotel already and this seemed like an easy walk down from our room - its an iconic and historical spot - there was music playing, jazzy vibe, relaxing - they have good nonalcoholic drinks if you don't drink CONS: - not a michelin star level menu. Before you flip out on me... I get that this restaurant is not a michelin starred culinary destination... however, considering that its associated with a 5 star hotel and its is supposedly an iconic restaurant ...coupled with NYE (a great reason to vamp up your creativity as a chef), the menu didn't wow! - 6 course dinners are obviously always small dishes but this menu choice left us hungry. We only had maybe 1-4 bites a dish. - the tastiness of each dish could have been way more original - service took a while - it was mostly all old people for the ambiance - our waiter poured tap water into our bubbly water but thats an easy mistake to make and they got us a new bottle - the price tag was $500+ (we only had 2 nonalcoholic drinks and one bottle of water with the 6 course meal that was advertised to be $125 on open table... we felt the price was off and addressed it but the waiter said just keep the receipt in case... made no sense of it and we just decided to let it go and not be annoying customers). Hope this helps. We are a young couple ...wanted to do a staycation for NYE, picked this restaurant for the location inside the hotel and the ease of just walking to it. Overall it was not worth the price tag. If you want a 6 course meal that has a little bit more realistic quantities of food and flavor, there are better spots. If you don't care and just want a nice relaxing jazzy low lit date night out, this is a well located spot inside the Grant Hotel in San Diego. Regarding pictures below: they are magnified! Food was the size of several bites no more, per dish. PS I am giving this review a high mark of a 4 because who are we to taint someone's hard work. This was just one experience. Maybe a one course meal might be a good, fair quantity and more tasty. It was also NYE and busy so we get why staff was slow. Lastly, we might have picky tastes having traveled and seen other types of 6 course menus. Bottom line: if you stay at the hotel this is easy to walk down to the lobby for dinner, just expect a price tag with it, maybe not your best of the best food choice but still good and service is fair but might be slow on busy nights.

Yelp
My husband and I enjoyed breakfast here 4 days in a row during our stay at the US Grant Hotel. The service here was wonderful and our amazing server Jose Hernandez was, hands down, the kindest and most patient person we encountered during our trip to SD. We looked forward to waking up early to breakfast; Jose went above and beyond to make us feel at home. He knew exactly what my husband liked and ordered, so he had these ready for us when we came down. The seasonal fruit plates were not only beautifully arranged, but delicious and a great start to our meal. The omelets, French toast, pancakes (yes, we pretty much tried the whole breakfast menu) were all very delicious. Thank you to Jose's exceptional hospitality and making our stay at the US Grant extra special.

Yelp
So thrilled that Grant Grill has reopened for dining, with Chef Phil Hoffer back in the kitchen working with the hotel's executive chef Mark Kropczynski. For our first meal out after being vaccinated, we were thrilled also to see Eduardo hired back and serving as our busser. He is wonderful. We arranged in advance with Chef Phil to have a special meal, so they gave us some smaller versions of several courses, tasting menu style! Since my sweetie and I eat different things (he's allergic to fish; I don't eat meat) Comp house foccaccia at the Grant: just as delicious as always. YUM! I forced myself to eat only a piece (...well...and another 1/3 of a piece) to save room! Amuse-bouche: delicious and colorful. I got parsley, salmon and beet, with citrus; my sweetie got something similar with no salmon. Wine: Sergio was our server and did a great job advising me through the (currently very limited) wine list. There are only 4 whites, and I think four reds, in addition to sparkling, plus a few cocktails. But I was extremely pleased with both classes I got. I started with Grgich Hills Estate Rose. *Delicious*. Much more complex than your usual rose. Later I got the Arsonist Chardonnay (which is not listed in the online menu) - vanilla, caramel, buttery - really good. Salad course: we had separately portioned small plates of the Freckle Romaine: Watercress, Strawberries, Humboldt Fog Goat Cheese, Watermelon Radish, Rhubarb Vinaigrette. Really delicious and very light! Risotto course: neither of us is trying to eat too many carbs - but the mushroom risotto (with the freshest morels & ramps!) was DELECTABLE. Also had perfectly all dente broccolini and other vegetables. YUM. Main course: My sweetie got the dry aged ribeye with asparagus and enjoyed it. I got the Scottish salmon (skin on) with Fava Bean and Spring Vegetable Succotash, and Thyme Grapefruit Beurre Blanc. It was very delicious - but I was starting to get full! Dessert: we wanted to say uncle! But since we were doing a tasting menu we still needed to try it - and take the rest home! What we had is not on the menu now - flourless chocolate cake with chestnut cream and berries. Delicious - my child devoured the rest at home. And also STRAWBERRY AND PORT WINE TARTE TATIN, with Ginger Crème Fraiche Ice Cream. YUM. I finished it the next day. We went on a slower night (Thurs) because we didn't want to be around crowds indoors - on Friday nights they are doing live entertainment. Overall it was a spectacular meal and we're delighted that the Grant (& Chef Phil!) are back!

Yelp
Still making excellent drinks and mostly good service but hours are very limited. The lounge closes at 11pm sharp on Friday and Saturday nights. Not 11:01pm, in fact closer to 10:55pm no matter how busy. Both the lounge and the grill are closed on Sundays. Of course there are lots of other choices in the Gaslamp, but such limited bar hours are inconvenient when staying in the Grant Hotel.

Yelp
Sam was an exceptional server! We enjoyed a delightful dinner with fascinating friends in a beautiful setting. Sam expertly selected wonderful wines to complement our menu choices, and I was pleased with my vegetarian lentils. Vegetarian options: Lentils with a subtle coconut sauce, delightful and light.

Yelp
We enjoyed the Grant Grill for breakfast and room service. I ordered an omelet, with a side of fruits, a burger, and a loaf of bread and muffins. I love the decor and atmosphere of the entire restaurant, from the bar, to the lighting, to the high ceilings. Very spacious and the service was top-notch. Portions were very generous. Good tastes and flavors as I was nervous eating at a restaurant from the hotel.

Yelp
Great service. Great ambience. Bread is amazing. Now the negatives - despite what it says on yelp - very few vegan /vegetarian options other than a couple salad and sides If you are a vegan or veg - DONT come here. Not what you expect when you are attached to a 5 star hotel

Yelp
Hold the presses!!! I travel every week and haven't had a meal that knocked me out gastricly until now. From the drop off of my car to the two valets, the check in to the Hotel with Alex, Tom the bar tender, Jennifer the waitress and Daniel the cook.... Just amazing. I was close to closing, Tom assured me all was well, he'd start my order as I ran my bags to my room after a five hour drive. Upon my return, Jennifer brought my drink, and extraordinary snack to hold me over until my glorious burger and blanched/grilled broccoli was ready. Hands down, if not the best burger I've ever had, definitely in the top three. As for the vegetables, hands down the best I have ever had. Daniel the Chief makes great food. Can't say enough good stuff. As a Titanium Marriott member, I travel 90+ days a year, this is by far the best food I've ever had in a marriott.

Yelp
Last night two friends and I went to have a drink at the bar prior to attending the theater. We were advised to sit at any table in the bar-lots to choose from. The busboy came right over with water. At that time I asked if they served decaf Irish Coffee. He wasn't sure so said he checked and said yes they made them. We waited 20 minutes for the waiter to come over which seemed excessive but will still had 45 minutes. We ordered our drinks my Irish Coffee, an espresso martini and club soda. That took another 20 minutes to get our drinks. Mine was a tepid glass mug of coffee with whiskey. The waiter said he would bring whipped cream which never happened (we never saw him again). When the floor manager came over to handle our check I said my drink was not what I order. She was clearly irritated and said that is how they make their Irish Coffee. She then grabbed my 3/4 full drink stomped off and came back with my $19 drink removed from the bill. The restaurant was clearly not full but the service was pathetic except for the busboy. We were disappointed as we were thinking of eating there for the next Broadway musical. That won't happen.

Yelp
Fantastic service! We stayed at the grant hotel for our 1 year anniversary and everything about our experience here was on point! I love the food here, it was pricey but I thought the flavors were great.

Yelp
We stayed at this hotel due to our Amex cards and we're so surprised how wonderful this restaurant inside is. We came back 4 times because of the amazing food, service and people. Our waiter the first two days remembered us, and our second waiter the third day was just as wonderful. The food is all delicious, fresh and beautiful. For lunch/dinner you get free foccacia bread- the best we have ever had. For breakfast they serve free mini muffins which were also incredible. Everything we tried here was amazing and I couldn't recommend it here more. Competes with some of san diego's high end food places even being a hotel restaurant. Edit; I can't believe I forgot to mention the best thing there. Hands down best sticky toffee pudding in my life. This is comparing to Gordon Ramsay's Hell Kitchen, Gar Woods in Tahoe and more.

Yelp
Probably the best service yet. I had $175 to spend on food since i was staying at the hotel. $100 for dinner and $75 for breakfast Free bread and some kind of fish on cucumber for dinner. We had seared tuna with mashed potatoes and octopus soup for dinner. Got a vivace drink for $17 For breakfast, we had pancakes, grant breakfast, and a burger. Our waiter knew we were splitting the burger and was kind enough to split it for us. When I couldn't finish the rest, he was kind enough to pack it for us and gave us extra ketchup.

Yelp
Located in the grant hotel. Classic old school restaurant. California cuisine. Went on a Saturday evening and there was a man on the piano, adding to the atmosphere. Wine list is good. Nice place for date night. Nice lighting and compared to some of the newer trendy places downtown, that tend to be loud, here you can enjoy a conversation. Our waitress Jasmine was lovely.

Yelp
This restaurant immediately makes me feel classy as I arrive. There is a $10 valet for people who are only there for the restaurant, which is highly recommend. It just saves the trouble of finding parking. As I walked through the downstairs plaza to get to restaurant, I felt like royalty. The chandeliers are absolutely stunning. I was happy to learn about the historical significance of this place, as it did not allow women before 3p until 1971. Our table was large and the food was amazing. The service was respectable and the prices were high but I was happy to pay it. I will definitely be going there again.

Yelp
In 50 years, I have divulged in alot of burgers and just when I had started to give up on a great juicy burger out, Grant's Grill renewed my faith. This cheeseburger is the bomb and is not to be missed if you are downtown. BTW. The fries are pretty darn good too!

Yelp
Good for special occasions, foodies and dates. Went on a Friday evening. There was a band playing in the bar area. Restaurant is located in a very traditionally styled hotel. Restaurant staff was awesome.

Yelp
Very cool and unique hotel restaurant and bar, the bread they give you is the best and the mock turtle soup and an incredible cheeseburger! A cool date spot or classy dinner place

Yelp
Fantastic experience on a Friday night at the Grant Grill in the Dining Room. When we arrived, we were asked if we'd prefer more casual "Bar Style" seating with live music (which was actually quite good) or in their separate dining room where we weren't next to the hustle and bustle but still able to listen in as we enjoyed our meal. We ordered a round of drinks, the cocktails were beautiful and well made while the beer selection was just average. We got started with the bread and butter provided, and it was possibly the best fresh bread at a sit down I've ever had. For our starter we ordered the Tempura Fried Squash Blossom and it was to die for. Four individually fried, yet light, blossom pieces stuffed with mascarpone cheese. Our entrees were the dry-aged ribeye cooked medium and the black truffle gnocchi. Absolutely incredible. The ribeye was exceptionally cooked and plated. Well seasoned, and tender through the entire cut. The Gnocchi (normally a starter) was a small portion, but so packed with fresh delicious flavors it held its own as an entree, especially with the fresh focaccia on the side. We wouldn't eat here as a norm, but considering it was our 9th anniversary that weekend and we are at the hotel for a few nights- it was fitting to try. We give it a 4.5 and are rounding up. Highly recommend. Not to mention- the staff were incredibly kind, attentive, and patient throughout our meal.

Yelp
We got lucky to have live band music, the environment and service is great, however, the food is not really meet my expectations. The GRANT GRILL'S LEGENDARY MOCK TURTLE SOUP tasted is good. Not much to said. GRILLED OCTOPUS ESCABECHE comes with dry octopus, and the whole dish I feel like just mixed everything together. BEET AND CELERY ROOT WELLINGTON comes with good Toasted Pepitas and can taste "Toasted Pepitas", the sauce is good, but when I putting everything in the mouth just felt like I can taste toasted pepitas. Overall, if just want to have great time to date with a girl, their lounge is really good with live music, and price is reasonable, however the Main courses, I think they can do better based on the price.
