In Times of Hardship, One Restaurant Group Is Determined to Deliver More Hope | Eater Twin Cities

"Expected to open in late July or early August in St. Paul's Cathedral Hill, The Gnome is being positioned as a big, beer-forward pub with an expansive patio and a wide price range — from a $10 burger up to a $110 steak — supported by more than 100 taps pouring local beer plus cold-brew coffee, Champagne, tiki cocktails and more. I learned that Aaron Cave will lead the pub kitchen and that cultural practices like mandatory time off (Cave has blocked his calendar and plans to turn his phone off for family time) are being built into the operation under culinary director Justin Sutherland and the Ingrams, reflecting an emphasis on sustaining staff rather than burning them out." - Joy Summers

Google
It’s hard to find a good Reuben sandwich in my opinion and theirs is out of this world! I’ve also had the Denver Dip and Gnome Cuban, which were both delicious. They have consistently good food and customer service. They also have live music in the evening occasionally.

Google
Fantastic - sort of like Cheers filled with garden gnomes. Great atmosphere - the kind of place you could hang out with your iPad, come with friends, or your family. Great food, custom beers (it is a brewery), indoor and outdoor seating. And then there are the gnomes everywhere. Heck, you can even buy a gnome t-shirt. Go there.

Google
Stopped by for a quick sandwich. Hubby got the chicken parm sandwich which he said was good. The tomatoe basil was also good I got the sloppy gnome. It was pretty good if I must say and VERY large. Ended up taking the other half home. The farmers onion soup is their french onion and it was good, but it was very salty. Needed some water yo tame. Our server was also was the bartender... i dont think we were supposed to be his table.. regardless he was awesome. Attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu. Would go back for a different sandwich and the same server!! Do recommend

Google
Two of my favorite things. Sandwiches and beer. Cool atmosphere. Garage doors. Lots of wood. Tons of seating. Good Ruben... But not the best I've ever had. Really good hazy IPA. Love their brewery sticker.

Google
Absolutely loved the vibe of this place. The beer and the roast beef sandwich here were both delicious. Has a parking lot. Highly recommend a stop here.

Google
Came for lunch and will be back. The menu was so big with soooooo many options! The fries were bomb and the ranch was on point. Broccoli and cheese soup was yum yum!!

Google
There’s no place like Gnome! There’s no place like Gnome! There’s no place like Gnome! We love the Gnome and always have a blast playing there. Food and Bev is excellent, vibe is top notch, and they support live music. Highly recommend!

Google
Made the trek up The Grateful Gnome yesterday afternoon for grub, music, and a cold beer. It was a very successful trip for all the items. The place was *packed* but we managed to snag a spot at the end of the bar. The staff was wonderful and handled the crowd with ease. I loved the cheese steak, my husband had the meatball parm, our friend had the Buffalo chicken wrap and we all split the huge order of fries. We tried a couple of the beers, with my favorite being the Mountain lair Lager. We'll definitely be making the drive up again soon!

Yelp
I returned to the Grateful Gnome on Halloween 2025 and brought 4 friends. We had a blast!!! Being a Jersey girl, I recommended and described the New Jersey sandwich favorites, but our server, Monea, was delightful and helped guide my friends to many delicious options. We had the Taylor ham, egg, and cheese, the sloppy gnome, the patty melt, eggplant parm, the Cuban, and great fries. We shared, and everyone was thrilled with the flavors and textures. I was so happy my friends enjoyed Jersey food as much as I do! We all loved the atmosphere, and the seating is plentiful inside and out. The parking is wonderful since they have their own lot! I have to add that we asked to speak to the owner, Ken. We were told he is not really a talker. To our surprise, Ken came over and was terrific! He told us the story of his dad starting at 4 am every day to begin the prep for the Taylor ham, egg, and cheese sandwiches for all the Jersey trades workers and other patrons. This is a strong part of the NJ culture. Ken told us the story of how he got connected to gnomes (ask him to see the tats). Ken shared his favorite Jersey food and how he got to Colorado. Great stories that should be on the website! Ken also spoke extremely highly of the brew master. Since I am not a beer drinker, I have no recommendations. This is a fun place to visit! We drove 40 minutes to get there, and we all want to return soon. Thanks, Ken and your talented staff!

Yelp
These are a few of my favorite things: The Grateful Dead, Craft Beer, Good Food and even Great Conversation. The Grateful Gnome provides that perfect mix of each, available, of course, in a place like Denver. This place has been on my radar for a while, and my (local) friend surprise me by taking me here, since she's known what's up since 1993. The Grateful Gnome was everything I hoped it was, with me in particular, smiling like a kid at Disneyland. Outstanding all the way around!

Jolynn G.

Yelp
Good Variety, tables are space out enough you can have private conversations. And enjoy the music... Nice choice of beers too

Yelp
I had a really terrible experience here last week. We got served undercooked chicken and I talked to a person who I found out was the owner and showed him and he acted like I was being a total pain. After talking more with this owner who is named Dan I realized he is a arrogont drunk who cares nothing about good customer service or food safety and thinks his stuff dont stank. I ended up getting sick from the food and I have strong disliking for this establishment. The people I was with also reported things wrong with there food and it took a really long time to get it. The brews were pretty good I guess but not good enought to raise my rating.

Yelp
Best neighborhood tavern that I've been to in years, I tried to stop here last st patty's day and new years, but they were full to the rafters. Friendly staff got us seated right away and took our order and let us know that our food might take a few minutes because they were slammed with takeout orders. Cozy. I asked our server for a good recommendation for beer to pair with my meal and he was spot on. Czech with the chicken Philly with peppers and onions. The only recommendation I have is that I did not order the chicken Philly I wanted a regular Philly cheesesteak, but I tried it anyway and liked it. Also the pretzel was a little hard around the corners. My neighbor works here and had nothing but great things to say about this place, he's tried everything on the menu and each of the beers at least twice, and he is right there isn't a bad thing on the menu or from the bar. I can't even imagine how crazy this place will be tomorrow for the Super Bowl. Come on in for a pint and a bite.

Yelp
Probably one of the coolest sandwich places I've been to in a long time. Sandwiches and beer what more could you want? Especially for lunch. The sandwiches are massive! We split one. Lots of beer options too. The service was good and it's just a funky little place with weird decor that just works. The only thing I maybe would've liked to see is a half sandwich option because they are large and it would be a nice option to have if you're by yourself.

Yelp
Travel to Colorado a lot, Denver has a great food scene just overall. Wanted to watch/listen to the Phish show so..go to Grateful Gnome. Homemade daily meatball sandwich 10/10. Insane good. Insane good for a meatball sub. Being an east coaster tried the Potine and it works, it pops w good gravy and some high end cheese curds. Wait staff always friendly and laid back all around. Kids always love their fresh subs, fun place and people.

Yelp
Took a short stroll to The Grateful Gnome this afternoon. I love the walkability of this area! I ordered a turkey club, which comes on toast, with lettuce tomato, bacon and mayo, and a side of fries. I could have called ahead, but I really wanted some delicious fries ... and you know, carryout doesn't always allow for that ... so, I waited for the freshness -- and the gnome DELIVERED (not literally, it was carryout, remember)! These fries had a crunchy coating, a nice saltiness, and a soft potato flavor inside. They stayed hot and delicious for my entire 8 block walk home! (And trust me, I wasnt sprinting.) AND, the order was large enough to share! The turkey club was delicious -- the tomatoes were actually red, and the bacon was cooked just right. And again, as far as that walk home, the sandwich retained it's integrity and wasn't a mushy mess. It was delicious -- and, it too was hearty enough in size to share. I look forward to another visit and maybe I'll hang around, try something new, have a beer! Try it!

Yelp
This is a great sandwich place with a lot of personality! My BLT had tons of bacon and the chopped cheese is a unique and wonderful creation. The fries were very good too
google avatar

Austen W.

Yelp
Great sandwiches and good beer, just make sure you got your order right before you leave the store. On 2 of the last 3 times I ordered, they messed up the sandwich order.

Yelp
Kept driving by this shop so decided to stop by. Nice pub-like place for food and sports watching and a good drink. Ample seating, inside and out, so goes for parking. Small lot, but there's also street parking. Food and service was typical, they were more laid back. I had ordered the Cuban sandwich and cheesesteak for the boyfriend. The Cuban was a bit dry for me and the cheese wasn't completely melted. It's not what I'm used to. My boyfriend enjoyed his cheesesteak sandwich. Other than that, that's about it.
google avatar

Max S.

Yelp
This place is the best. So many options for sandwiches that are so good. Great beer, great staff. Friendly funny. This place is choice.
google avatar

Derrick D.

Yelp
I just wanted to add the pictures I forgot to add. Still absolutely in love with this restaurant.
google avatar

Erin W.

Yelp
I've unlocked the perfect combo here - Buffalo chicken Caesar salad wrap with chips and pimento cheese on the side - it was soooooo good. Service was so quick and it's a casual and fun place to watch sports with a nice beer menu.
google avatar

Denise T.

Yelp
This place is our staple any time we go to a show at the Oriental Theater. Each time i try something new too. This last time I tried the Denver Dip with delicious au jus. That was a damn good sandwich. I also love the Italian as a wrap. I honestly don't think you could go wrong with any sandwich decision. Everyone of them I have tried have been really good. We also tried their French onion soup and their mac salad. Both were good additions. They also have a good assortment of beers to pick from. Cool place overall.
google avatar

Dale Z.

Yelp
The first thing to know about the Gnome is that it is an amazing and authentic sandwich shop that is also a brewery. I did not figure it out on my own. It was only after a long conversation with the owner that I came to know this. Beer is good. Sandwiches are better. Service is solid, even when they are slammed. Having a location right across from the Oriental Theater is a huge selling point when selecting a pre-show experience.
google avatar

Kevin L.

Yelp
I don't typically give 5 stars unless a place absolutely deserves it, and this place earned it. I came in before a Lucha Libre & Laughs event across the street at The Oriental and I am glad my friends told me to meet there. I was welcomed and seated immediately. The waitress then immediately came by with some water and menus. Mind you, this is during a busy time. I picked my beer and told her, she came back with it not even 5 minutes later. The beer was great too. I decided on the Philly. I have to say... This thing was delicious. The perfect amount of meat and cheese. The bread was great. This place is great. The inside is very clean, and it has a super cool vibe about it. I will be taking my girlfriend here for sure.
google avatar

Andrea M.

Yelp
Some of the best wings for wing Wednesday! $8 for a lb which is usually 8-10 wings. Awesome location, parking lot, right by Oriental theater and call to arms brewery! Quick service, love the ambiance of this spot. The inside is soooo cool! Oh their sandwiches and fries are fricken awesome too!
google avatar

Bryan C.

Yelp
Great place and great experience...except the WV theme ;) Food was great and sandwiches came fast. Great variety of beer. Server was hilarious and atentive.
google avatar

J P.

Yelp
If you want a disappointing sandwich, this is the place for you. I would just hit up a Jimmy John's instead. But it it's in a good location and a super walkable area!
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
Solid sandwich spot not too far from our house. The menu is massive which can be a bit overwhelming. We've talked about going here for years and finally made it happen. We got take out and it was a quick turn around from ordering to being ready. My meatball sandwich was fine, but nothing to write home about. I'd definitely try something else next time and probably try eating in rather than take out.
google avatar

Yaakov R.

Yelp
Delicious Reuben sandwich and super sweet stuff. Also, the Bloody Mary and poutine was good (they call the poutine something else).
google avatar

Jerry S.

Yelp
Went in it was cold outside place was nearly empty. The garage door was open and the host who was very rude asked if I wanted to sit at the bar . I told him no I wanted a table and he directed me to a table by the open garage door . When I asked if I could have a table away from the door he said in no uncertain terms that this is where I was to be seated . I turned around and and left and will never come back. Service like that is uncalled for . The customer is always right!
google avatar

Gregg H.

Yelp
Great parking. Cool decor. This place consistently delivered exceptional food. Loved the grilled ham and cheese and the chef salad. The only downside: this place is 1,020 miles from my home! They have a LONG list of amazing sandwiches and I'd try them all if I was closer. This is a great area altogether with a lot of cool places.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
I am not a huge sandwich person (especially being pescatarian) but I enjoy The Gnome! The vibes are great, especially when they open the windows and it is warm and sunny. Note that dogs are not allowed. The menu has some good vegetarian options and they have lots of TVs for watching games. They often have a long wait on Saturdays for certain games but otherwise, a great time!
google avatar

Bri M.

Yelp
Idk how anyone could give less than 5 stars. 6 years later from my first review and I still be coming back any chance I get. YOU CANNOT GET SANDWICHES THIS DELICIOUS AND THIS REASONABLY PRICED ANYWHERE IN DENVER! The deli meat is always sliced to perfection and my personal favorites, the Mini Sloppy Gnome and the NYc Bodega Chopped Cheese takes me back to my old stomping grounds on the east coast- get it. I promise it will change your life. Hell, get both! You only live once.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
My favorite sandwich shop in denver!!! This New Jersey/New York bar gives you warm pub vibes. Their sandwiches are comforting and huge! The staff is so attentive and they have a great beer selection!
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
Came in for a bite before a show at The Oriental. My son and I were having some mom and boy time. He ordered the hot dog with chili and chips. I got a #10 Ham, Salami, Capicola, Provolone. The customer service was welcoming. Our server brought us our waters swiftly and our dinner came out quite quick for the time of day. She kept our glasses full. This is always a good choice.
google avatar

J B.

Yelp
We love the Gnome! With a massive sandwich selection, there's something to satisfy every craving--and you can customize to your heart's content. They also brew their own beer, and it's fantastic! I highly recommend the Giggity IPA and the Little Fella session IPA. The atmosphere is laid-back, the staff is incredibly friendly, and it's the kind of neighborhood spot you'll want to keep coming back to.
google avatar

Kali M.

Yelp
Be warned the sandwich portions are huge! But absolutely delicious! I love a good deli sandwich or wrap, there's so many amazing options to choose from it's so hard to choose just one! The service was good. No complaints except the side Caesar salad it was pitiful and over priced. Great for watching sports and lots of craft beer to choose from! The restaurant was super cozy and the decor was super fun and unique! Would def come back!
google avatar

Courtney H.

Yelp
this is a disappointing one for me to write because once we FINALLY got our sandwiches they were actually very good. It's really too bad that the service was so horrible. We were sat outside and waited 20 minutes before anyone even acknowledged us. We waited so long that the table next to us turned around to comment on how they may have "forgot about us." When someone finally came over it was only to tell me someone else would be helping me and if we wanted water there was a self serve water station inside. 15 minutes later, another man came over and said the person that originally came to the table was actually supposed to take our order but he would "just do it." That was the extent of our "customer service". Food was dropped off and not a single word until a THIRD party came and took our payment. Super disappointing situation, customer service ruined our good sandwiches.
google avatar

Noah K.

Yelp
Best sandwich I've had in Denver. Period. I'm a sucker a Cuban and Grateful Gnome did not disappoint. The layout of the restaurant is reminiscent of a rustic sports bar with full table service. Super casual. The beverages were fantastic, we tried some of the house-made beers and they compete with some of the top notch brewery's in the area. For the sandwiches, I went with the Cuban. Loaded with meat and cheese with a delicious mustard spread. For a Cuban, this was extremely easy to eat. The perfect panini press char secured the sandwich integrity with authority. So flavorful you have to eat it slow. Check it out you will be addicted!

Donnis M.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch today with a party of 5. Wednesday at 12:30. No wait, plenty of parking. Friendly service, food served quickly. We had disco fries as an appetizer. Portion is about right as an appetizer for 2 (larger appetites) or 3. The size matches the price of ~$7. I had a meatball sandwich. Good flavor and well prepared. One of our party had a club sandwich and enjoyed it. There was a gnome Cuban sandwich which was also enjoyed. We would stop by again if in the area.
google avatar

Heather T.

Yelp
Stopped for take out today and definitely want to come back to eat in and have a beer. The hubs got a turkey BLT that was so big, he split it into two meals. He told me he thought it was good with a full mouthful so he's definitely a fan. I did more of a build your own approach with turkey, coleslaw, mayo and honey mustard on wheat. Another big sammie so admittedly I shared some of the turkey with our dog. We were both happy with my pick. Service was fast and friendly.
google avatar

April C.

Yelp
Very cute place in a neat area of Denver. It's a sandwich shop and brewery that would not have caught my eye if it weren't for the gnome theme. I was so surprised to find that the sandwiches are delicious! We had a Ruben and an Italian sub. Both were stuffed full of meat. The breads were great and all of the flavors were perfect. They also offer cocktails - I had a gin and tonic made with a local gin (the only gin they offer) and it was great!! Very welcoming feeling and our server was fantastic! Next time I'm in Denver, I'm going back to try a different sandwich!!
google avatar

Lisa A.

Yelp
Beer and food were delicious. My problem with this spot is the wait staff. Extremely unfriendly and inattentive, almost annoyed that they had to serve you. And well, my tip reflected that.

Kimberly S.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing sandwiches. Girls night out and we had so much fun. Beer was also good.
google avatar

Patrick H.

Yelp
Great sandwiches here. They can build any sando you have in mind and probably have something better on the menu. Legit sides. Fun atmosphere. Solid drinks. Love this place. Grateful Gnome is a hidden gem!
google avatar

Mojos G.

Yelp
I think this is perhaps another example of a good establishment being popular in Denver, because there simply aren't other good food choices? Vegans / Vegetarians avoid this place. You do indeed have 3 options. If they are the most basic boring options possible. Literally a fast food subway type chain is better. I had an egg salad sandwich and had to add salt and pepper (which I had originally requested but I guess was forgotten?) to make it edible. Zero flavor. Service was incredibly slow, for anyplace much less a sandwich shop. Was expecting a lot more gnomes, I probably would have forgiven the tasteless food and bad service if the place had been flooded with gnomes. Yawn. Also they featured pimento cheese on Instagram- wasn't even an option on the menu except as a side and when I asked about the appetizer show on Insta she just said "ummm...yeah...we're out."
google avatar

Jenni R.

Yelp
This is a sit down restaurant near Tennyson area of Denver. A big Gnome stands outside the entrance so you can't miss this place. We were immediately seated and our waiter was always checking in on us to make sure we were good. We had a Caesar salad and cheese burger with a couple beers. Food was very good! Lots of choices on the food menu & service was great.
google avatar

Ashley P.

Yelp
Love this spot on Tennyson! Come here for delicious beers and *FAT* sandwiches! I've gotten a few different sandwiches here, but most recently got the three cheese sandwich. And let me tell you, they don't skimp on the sandwiches!! Check out the photo of my cheese sandwich to see just how much bag for you're buck you're getting! All the ingredients taste super fresh and delicious. It's seriously hard to get a better sandwich than you'll find here! Now onto the beer... I've tried a few of their beers, so this time I went for a flight so I could have some variety. Each beer was tastier than the previous one. For a spot that doesn't specialize in sours, their sour was nice and tart and a perfect thirst quencher for a hot day. Other notable qualities: a great, convenient location with parking behind the building. Lots of room, so even when they're packed on a weekend we've gotten seated pretty much right away. Great, quick service. Lots of tvs for sports fan (with the one caveat being I believe they're a West Virginia alumni bar, so a lot of them times they'll play those games and alumni from there are packing the place. But they usually have other games on, too!) All in all, I would highly recommend this spot. Cool name, amazing eats, and good drinks to wash it all down!
google avatar

Tom G.

Yelp
The wings are fantastic, my wife and I loved the sandwiches. The beers are good. We will definitely be back to try more of the sandwiches and beers.
google avatar

Aleah V.

Yelp
This place is more than just a sandwich shop. They've got delicious beer, friendly staff, multiple tvs showing all the sports games. I was quite impressed when I walked in. The host will seat your party at a table or you can belly up to the bar if that's more your style. They have many sandwich options so there's something for everybody. The menu even goes beyond just sandwiches. I want to try the French onion soup next! Maybe the wings too.

Judy M.

Yelp
Pimento cheese dip, Reuben, Denver Dip, Meatball Parm, BLT, beer! Fun and funky place to bring out of town visitors! Service fast and friendly. Great find!
google avatar

Tiffany T.

Yelp
Well...we love gnomes, beer, and sandwiches so we had to find this place and try it out. It did not disappoint!! GNOMES EVERYWHERE! We had the #10 and the gnome Cuban. Both sandwiches were delicious but I'm still dreaming about the CUBAN! We added cheesy fries and I'm glad we did. Awesome as well. Great beer selection although they were out of two beers that my husband ordered. Service was good but no one was smiling or really friendly. That would have made a big difference. Food and Gnomes get and A++++
google avatar

Cameron Y.

Yelp
Carne asada hot sando is ALMOST great. The meat to vegetable/crema ratio is slightly off. 6.9/10 but has potential of being a solid 8.0

Sharon G.

Yelp
Asked for butter on my bread and got clumps of butter. So much butter. Also - if you go for take away, be sure to check your order before leaving.
google avatar

Tammy N.

Yelp
We were in Denver for our Grandson's concert at The Oriental Theater. This restaurant is directly across the street and we came after the concert. It's a very "Gnome Centric" place with gnomes everywhere. They specialize in sandwiches. I got the Chicken Parmesan Sandwich and my husband got the patty melt. We shared chili cheese fries. The people working there were super nice and efficient. The food and vibe was nice! Hope to return.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Best sandwiches in town, cold or hot! Wings and fries are also great. And of course, tasty microbrews!
