Eating an affordable lunch outside on a deck with friends, in this spring weather? YES please! I ordered the chicken salad sandwich, the homemade chips are always a hit. My friend ordered a pizza, and beware they are not single serving size, she had a lot to take home after and it was pretty good as well. Food was delicious, the atmosphere was lovely (will be even better once the bridge has finished construction). Service is noticeably slower, so wouldn't recommend if you're in a hurry but was a perfect spot to catch up with friends and not feel rushed. The green goat is my go to for those perfect afternoons.

Google
Great little place for dinner. Good food and service. Mckinley was an excellent server very attentive! The deviled eggs were the only issue, too salty for us.

Google
Food was good, atmosphere was great, service was only ok. It might have been because we went on a Sunday when they have a breakfast buffet and we were ordering food. The hostess was nice and helpful but our server was hard to flag down. Never filled up my drink. Brought my check before we finished ordering. The cheesecake was AMAZING! We tried the banana pudding and s’more cheesecakes and both were top notch!

Google
We have been here a couple times and every time the service has been wonderful, the foods prices can definitely add up before you know it you’re thinking if this can be a tax write off, I kid. That being said the food is delicious but the portions are pretty small-medium. We only ever sit outside so I have no idea what the atmosphere indoors is like but the outside seating is always a good time. Definitely love this place and will be back again. Thank you to the servers and chefs!

Simple but personable. The owner is the chef and the wife is the bartender. It showed in the food. Unique and tasty

I got the Derail with a gluten free wrap and Asian slaw. It was absolutely delicious! JJ and Nicole are always outstanding waitresses! I'm very thankful to have a safe place to eat at in Roanoke.

Google
Great menu with some Gluten free options. Larger than usual Beer selection with many good drafts. Lots of specials. Nice relaxed vibe. Lots of local ingredients. We appreciated that the Air conditioning was NOT on full blast to make it feel freezing cold. It was just right. Wait times at around 2:30 on a Friday meant no wait whatsoever. Plenty of seating both indoor and outdoor. Waitress was quick, attentive and pleasant. And the prices were excellent. Our bill was less than it would have been at many other restaurants. That was a great surprise. Everyone enjoyed their food.

Disappointing Experience Despite Cute Outdoor Ambiance - We visited this restaurant last night, drawn in by the charming outdoor seating area. Unfortunately, that was the highlight of our evening. We were greeted by a young man who, when I asked how he was doing, frowned and replied, “I’m super tired.” Not exactly the warm welcome we hoped for. Another staff member dropped off waters but never returned, and after waiting quite a while with no one checking in, my husband had to go inside the restaurant to place our order. When our food finally arrived—brought out by yet another different person—it was just okay. I had the Greek gyro, which was decent and had a nice dressing. My husband ordered the turkey club, but it oddly tasted like fish, and he felt something was off with the meat. No one came by to ask how things were, and we ended up walking in to pay on our own. It’s a shame, because the patio area is really cute and could be a great spot. But between the lackluster service, underwhelming food, and complete absence of follow-up, we won’t be returning.

Yelp
Sunday Brunch was amazing. Lots of choices and a made to order omelette made this a great experience. Great service and delicious cocktails.

Yelp
I love the location, a big deck and it's located alongside Wasena Park. It is very green and cool there. They welcomed my puppy and even brought him water ! My teen loves to come here, which is how I keep ending up here. The hummus appetizer was basically pureed refried beans and very bland. Only ate one bite, not good. This is all I ordered to eat and I was very disappointed. My drink also lacked flavor and seemed watered down, maybe it sat and the ice melted ? So next time- no ice. The only item we have truly enjoyed was the calzone and that was good, but just okay. My family loves this place and it's sad how lackluster the food is. I hope they change to a small menu with bright flavors This location will have us returning. The waitress was AMAZING. Don't take it out on the staff with tipping, because the owner is cheap or the cook is clueless.

Yelp
We have been sitting here for almost two hours and still have not received our food. Multiple people who came in behind us have already eaten, paid and left. The waitress has spent the entire time blaming her co-workers for the delay. Not a great look! Have been here multiple times but would not recommend again. The food is fine but not worth the hassle and blame-game from the service staff.

Yelp
Went back like o said and tried something totally different. Korean Tacos. They meat a slightly dry but the spicy sauce that was on the side paired well with the tacos & balanced it out. Got to say never ever did think I would eat Kale in a taco but it tastes really good! Service today was ok, not as fast as the last time, they did have a lot of people dining outside and the banquet room was also occupied. Nevertheless, a pleasant atmosphere both inside and out. Great food!

Yelp
The Green Goat is a restaurant located in the beautifully restored Wasena station historic building, off the Roanoke River Greenway, in the Wasena area of Roanoke, Virginia. When one arrives, one can't help but to fall in love with this warm, charming, and cozy building in the middle of nowhere. In front of its entrance there is a deck with built in benches so that in good weather customers could sit there and wait to be called to be seated at the dining room. Next to the deck there is also a patio and fire pits with round bench tables for those who would like to enjoy their food in the outdoors during the appropriate Seasons of the year. As one enters the building the first things that call attention are the warm brick floors and the high wood ceiling. They give the place character as well as a relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy a good quality meal, at a reasonable price, while spending quality time with family and friends. The restaurant also has a nice size private room for special occasions. When I arrived I was warmly greeted and brought to a table in the dining room located beyond the bar. The wood table and the lighting treatment provided a warm, charming, and cozy environment in which to enjoy a good dining experience. However, the metal chairs were a bit uncomfortable and out of place with the otherwise warm decor. My server Bethany quickly greeted me and recited the specials of the day. Then she took my order: A Mocktail for my drink. The Goat Shrimp for my appetizer. A House Salad. And the New York Strip cooked medium rare with Brussels Sprouts for my main entrée. Everything was amazingly delicious. The Goat Shrimp appetizer tasted marvelous. The salad and salad dressing were very nice, and the main entrée was out of this world. The only problem was the pacing of bringing out the different items. My server brought everything out at the same time, instead of waiting for me to enjoy each dish before bringing out the next. This not only detracted from the dining experience but also prevented me from giving this restaurant a 5 Star review. I hope that when the managers of the restaurant read this, they take action to impede this from happening again by giving more training to the servers and the kitchen staff. Which by the way, my compliments to the Chef for such wonderful cuisine. Summing up, this is a one of a kind restaurant, that if the actions mentioned in my positive feedback are taken, can easily become one of everyone who eats here once, favorite restaurants, including me of course.

Yelp
Was in town recently on business with my work party, the place is obviously popular, outside seating areas and surrounded by a large park. A nice setting but thats where it stopped for me. Kitchen was completely out of sync. After ordering for our party of eight, about 18 or so minutes later, six in our party were served, and then the other two of us (one being me) waited and waited and then waited some more. The kitchen manager should be embarassed by the poor timing of our parties meal. A complete joke, there was well over a 20 minute lag between the first six entrees touching the table in our party and the last two. Like they completely missed two of the orders on our ticket? Neither meal was complicated either or required extra prep. The first of our party was finishing up their meals as the last two finally were served, which defeats the whole purpose of having a meal together as a group. The food was just okay, same with the service and the kitchen lacked basic timing skills with obviously no expeditor or manager keeping an eye. 2 Stars - Most likely would not return 00987

Yelp
After a fun dinner with family and a very good waiter, the entire experience was ruined and left me feeling nauseous all the way home. Two girls cleaning the ladies room were talking about how to, or not to, clean it and then put their hands on my leftovers several times before and after handling the lid to the garbage can. It was vile and disgusting. With the lack of care, I wonder what goes on in the kitchen. And, I have NEVER left a poor review. But awful. Just awful.

Yelp
My Fire Roasted Turkey sandwich was amazing as were the Wings in the Irish Whiskey sauce. The house chips with onion dip I would say wasn't worth the $6 (a lot of chips and very little dip) but it wasn't bad just not all that. Definitely a pretty and yummy stop if you're in the area.

Yelp
I will preface this by saying Green Goat is one of our staples. We go often for Sunday brunch and occasionally for dinner. We were looking forward to continuing our usual Sunday brunch plan. We showed up and there were at least 6 tables open outside and a ton inside. We go up to the hostess stand and are met with an irritated employee who simply says "we are not seating anyone without a reservation". I looked and saw no sign, and definitely no post made anywhere. We were then told the brunch that is normally $15 was $35 for Mother's day. It felt they were taking advantage of it being a holiday and honestly, they lost a lot of business and I'm not sure we will be returning in the future. If you want local support and commitment from your community, you take care of them just like they take care of you

Yelp
We've visited the green goat multiple times and it is always good. The food and service is exceptional.

Yelp
We used to go to the Green Goat regularly until about a year ago. The seating hostess then was clueless and seemed in a daze most of the time. We waited for a long time and then when seated no waitress or waiter came to see us for another 10 minutes. We ordered some deviled eggs as an appetizer which stretched for about 20 minutes more, and we couldn't find our waitress to mention this to, so we got up to leave. The waitress then appeared without our deviled eggs and we politely said we needed to leave due to the constant delay. She was quite rude in her reaction instead of trying to encourage us to stay. It took about 7 months to try the Green Goat again, and it was back to a good experience with the wait, good waiter and great food. We've been back one other time too and a good experience. We're still a little leery about making the trek from Botetourt after the really bad experience and a few not so great before that one. It's usually not the food, but the poor staff involved.

Yelp
Some of the most welcoming and kind staff! They have a great variety of food, and it all is delicious! Great location right next to the Roanoke River. I suggest the Calzones, mm mm delicious!

Yelp
This place was great! It is almost like a hidden gem and it took me on the suburbian roads and has it nestled in with a cute park and walking area. Construction was happening so it was noiserer then I expected and left a weird plastic smell in the air when walking from the parking lot. Once inside, it is a cute restaurant! The decor is very adorable, many being about farm life, the woods, and a variety of animals. They have a small wall for selling sweaters, gift cards and jewelery. Our waiter was fantastic! My wife startles easily and she was startled by the waiter and she made sure that when she approached it was in front and not from behind so that my wife wouldn't be startled. It was a simple change, but was very much appreciated and showed that they care on how people are feeling. The food was amazing. Everything came out at a decent time and tasted fantastic. We got the deviled eggs, sans meat, the pimento cheese app and the chicken tenders basket. Everything was fresh, crisp and a delight to have. The reasons that it was docked a star is that the chairs were metal and smaller then expected. They were not comfy to sit in and pinched the sides of my legs. With uncomfortable chairs, the table was also sticky for some reason and not pleasent to touch. Regardless of that, the food was amazing, the staff were amazing and the small issues were able to be ignored.

Yelp
Best pizza in Roanoke. The sauce is perfect and the crust is amazing. Fresh fish specials are always great too.

Yelp
Kantara was great, Super quick and excellent service. Food was also really good. Plenty of new draft options as well as some classics. The magical mullet beer was great

Robin H.

Yelp
Never had a bad dish at this restaurant; hands down the best Cobb Salad in town. SO's mom is addicted to the Fried Green Tomato sandwich, daughter is a huge fan of their Moscow Mule Service has always been exemplary (seems to be staffed by experienced food service people) and the location is great - adjacent to the Greenway and Blueway. Nice vibe...looking forward to spending an evening here and a stroll after dinner. Hoping the bridge closing does not cause too much negative impact on this lovely place

Alfred S.

Yelp
Been to this place a few times lunch and dinner. We have ordered off menu and special of day. Started out pretty good no issues as we went to more it continued to go down hill. Most food was left on table . Cold or had an off taste to the meat in the dish. Told waitress . No response and still had to pay for it. Stopped trying after that. It is hard to get a desired meal in Roanoke. We have high standards, but when you are charge high prices you expect it to be eatable. Not in this city .Searve you crap and charge gold. Then they ask for a tip.!!

Yelp
Service with two smiles! Capri was delightful. Amazing food, eggplant Fries, fried green tomato boy, calzone, something for everyone.

Yelp
This is supposed to be someplace that people absolutely love! I am from out of town and was really looking forward to it. We were pleasantly welcome by the hostess in the front. She worked very hard and did a great job of getting us to our table. But I must say our food did not come out for a very long time, even though there weren't many people. I think the problem is that they had one server for everyone in the entire outside and inside. Our food came in strange order, we had to wait forever for drinks, parts of our meal were not delivered and weren't brought until almost the end of our meal. Our food was good, but we really couldn't enjoy dinner together because of all the sparsity of service and delivery. Overall, I'd like to try this place again but the service was so terrible I wince at the thought.

Alex T.

Yelp
This place has the worst service. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. It personally just seems like the wait staff doesn't care about the guests or making money. Servers can't seat people waiting at the door; they just walk by and make you wait for the "host," takes 5 minutes to get greeted at the table, 5 minutes to get a drink and that's because we asked. Our server didn't ask. No mention of drinks, no mention of an appetizer. Whoever trains your servers is a joke. The food is great. 100% the food isn't the issue And I've tried to return on multiple occasions, but the service has just continued to go down hill. This will be my last time coming to this restaurant until they fix something.

Yelp
The Green Goat is a fantastic local restaurant located in the historic Wasena Station. The location originally served as a rail-yard freight depot and later a transportation museum up until the Roanoke flood of 1985. It is great to see a charming space like this being utilized again for something the community can enjoy. I went here recently with my wife, sister, and brother-in-law, and we had wonderful time. We had a little bit of a wait, but that is to be expected on a Friday night at a popular place like this. Our appetizers, Eggplant Fries and Sweet Potato Tots, and entrees, Coupler Calzone, Cubano, The Goat Pizza and Reuben Your Way, were made with quality ingredients and perfectly delicious. If you are looking for something unique for your next dining experience in Roanoke, VA, you might want to consider the Green Goat.

Yelp
Wonderful service Wonderful food Open on Monday Came off 81 looking for lunch not too far.. Worth it

Yelp
Great spot. Stopped on a roadtrip to DC. Definitely worth a little detour!! Sat outside which was perfect.

Yelp
Today was the 2nd time eating at the Green Goat. We were not disappointed either time. There is plenty of food so leftovers for later. The food was delicious and service was amazing. We will definitely return.

Yelp
I had the best fish and chips, since my last trip to England. Flavorful cod and tasty batter. Add Guinness and it's close to home!

Donna F.

Yelp
I had an issue here but the owners, they ended up rectifying it and handled it very professionally. Great food- great space and great owners. There are just a couple of servers that are not top tier so you need to lean on them to get your food.

Lucinda H.

Yelp
Great place for outdoor dining however be prepared to be there a couple of hours. The food took 1.5 hours for 6 people. When we arrived, we were the only table seated outside. The waitress acknowledged the wait. However, no one from management ever acknowledged or apologized for taking so long. What appeared to be a manager delivered 1/2 appetizers and a side of guacamole which belonged with the meal that showed up 1 hour later. He was pretty rude. Second appetizer never came, even though he said it was on the way. Food was good once it arrived to the table. This was not the first time this has happened!
google avatar

Jasreen K.

Yelp
Very nice location right next to the river, pet friendly - absolutely amazing! Husband ordered a Cuban which he loved. But I was super dissatisfied with my crab cakes - they brought out my salad and entree both at the same time. So by the time I got to my crab cakes - they were cold, gooey lumps.
google avatar

Kelly O.

Yelp
I was in need of a fresh salad and this place came through. Their cob was delicious. It had everything you could want on a salad and a ton of protein: blue cheese, bacon, chicken, and boiled egg! It was super fresh and full of flavor. I would definitely come back just for this! We also got the double fudge brownie. I would say this was just mediocre. It kind of tasted store bought. It wasn't bad but not great, wouldn't get it again. I would recommend their peanut butter pie, that one was good. Overall, I liked their food variety, prices, and enjoyed eating here.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
We stopped here on a road trip with my dog. It was well worth the 20 minute detour on my route to get to sit outside and have lunch with my dog, rather than sit in the car eating fast food at an exit off 81. I got the Fried Green Tomato BLT and it was delicious. The waffle fries were good too. Service was good and the outdoor dining space was great. It's right next to the Roanoke River Greenway, so after lunch we took my dog on a nice walk before getting back in the car and continuing on our way. This will be a fairly frequent trip for me and I'll be sure to keep stopping here along the way.

Yelp
I hope this is seen as constructive criticisim. I waited until I had visited the Green Goat 4 times before writing a review and with each visit it became more clear that something needs to change. One of the best physcial settings for a restaraunt deserves a willingess to look at places where the buisness can improve. My sense is that it's not the servers- they seem to be busting their butts and generally employing effective practices, but for a location with the best outdoor seating - there have been multiple times when they aren't serving outside because 'there are not enough servers on staff'. This seems like an easy fix, either hire more servers or provide only a limited menu for those outdoor spaces that are so desireable. I've also had a bad product come out of the kitchen, and I'm talking bad: a chopped up ramekin lid in a salad, a plastic bag in my kids maccaroni and cheeze. Along with that, three visits had a ticket time over a 40 minutes - this tells me that it's not the quality of the kitchen staff, but rather the fact that there might not be enough of them. Finally, we were not allowed to leave our outdoor seating during a lightening storm and take shelter, with our kids, in the banquet room (which was empty) and when we pressed the issue a manager got pretty agrivated with my friend from out of town. I spoke to a woman at work this morning about the experience and she shared a similar experience, saying "my friends and I will only get drinks there". We joked that "green goat needs an intervention". I hope the business succeeds and I love the location. I hope this review is helpful.
google avatar

Monica M.

Yelp
Great use of the outdoor space. Food is modern but comfort at the same time. Love the location near the river.

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Great ambience and patio. And the service was fantastic!! Loved that they had gluten free options also, including beer!

Christy ..

Yelp
I have been here a few times. First time was by far the best with amazing pot roast and waitress. After that, it has just been okay. The last time I went the waitress was so rude we walked out. I emailed the establishment along with Facebook messenger, I was told they would look at the email. I have yet to receive a response from the email I sent on Monday. I will not be going back!

Julie W.

Yelp
What a disappointment. Drink tasted like cherry cough syrup (and they won't exchange) or refund!, chicken gumbo sausage soup was cold, no chicken, hot dog tasting sausage and chewy rice and okra/undercooked. The Cubano was bland (I didn't get spicy mustard on it) but the sweet potato tots were hot and good. Best thing was the server Joshua! He gets both stars!!
google avatar

Riley C.

Yelp
Nice local restaurant with a view of a local park, greenway and close to the river. The brunch is nice and for the prices an decent variety is offered. There was a waffle and omelet station that has a cook to take care of perfecting the brunch eats. This was in addition to gravy with biscuits, a salad bar, and of course bacon and sausage. When we were there there was some apples with a crumble on top, turkey roll and mashed potatoes. The mimosas at $4 each were tasty and good for a toast early in the day. It was a rainy day and before mid-morning church services were out, which offered an ease of seating. This is probably not something that could be offered on a sunny day or after services. There is plenty of parking on the street in front.
google avatar

Greg D.

Yelp
Nicole rocks! One of the best servers\ bartenders I've seen in awhile! Place was packed for lunch on a Friday and Nicole was awesome. Water for humans and dogs, beers super quick, and food orders in quickly! All with a smile and great conversation! Plus the food was good! Highly recommend to all!
google avatar

Yelp
I have moved back to Roanoke after being gone for many years. To find this gem of a restaurant in "wasena" after having seen the park go downhill on many visits, is wonderful. They have done a great service by renovating the old RR freight depot. The grounds are beautiful and I cannot wait to back in cooler weather and enjoy the outdoor areas. The menu is interesting and reasonably priced. Try the loaded waffle fries. Unique, hot and tasty! We tried the Cubano and the BLT with fried green tomatoes. Both were well prepared, served hot, tasted fresh and delicious. The service was perfect. Try adding pimento cheese to the BLT! Adorable location, great service, worth your visit!
google avatar

Linda G.

Yelp
I went for lunch here for the first time with a group of friends. Very friendly and prompt service, with a large menu selection. Unfortunately, the chairs were the most uncomfortable I'd ever encountered. One step up from folding chairs, and unless you are a size 4 woman, the hard metal supports on the sides will be digging into your hips. Ouch. I ordered a favorite from the menu - grilled pimiento cheese sandwich with deep-fried sweet potato tots. If you order this, by the time you're on your way home, you'll feel your arteries hardening and your blood pressure heading skyward. Very greasy and salty - which, of course, makes it delicious, what can I say? Bathroom report: The ladies' room seemed clean enough, but the walls are painted a bilious green and there was an unpleasant stuffy smell as if the air were not circulating. The choice of bathroom flooring is also unfortunate - the design pattern looks like tiny bits of paper are lying around. All in all, a bag of mixed pleasures.

Debi F.

Yelp
Had my twins sweet 16 party at The Green Goat. Food was great! Service was AMAZING!!! Price was very reasonable. Even got the cake delivered
google avatar

Angela M.

Yelp
Long wait time to get a table for a midweek lunch. The crankpin wrap needed a little more flavor so requested the dressing that goes on it. It helped but we were charged for the dressing. The sweet potato tots which are a "premium side" were soggy, not crispy, and there wasn't that many for the up-charge. Might try again as it has a nice atmosphere.
google avatar

Yelp
We had a good dinner here tonight! The Pimento Cheese Toast appetizer was to die for! It was so good, and I highly recommend. I had the turkey sandwich with sweet potato tater tots, and it was good! Nothing to rave about, but still good. The restaurant itself was adorable, and I loved the logo they had around the place! The outdoor dining is the best part, especially with the string lights and fire pits. Definitely a place to try!
google avatar

Elspeth G.

Yelp
The best things about this place are the location on the Greenway and their outdoor seating, with fires and Adirondack chairs. The drinks are decent (cocktails aren't great), and the food is very low quality. They have virtually no vegan options and, when I asked for vegetarian pizza, they still put on the meat and the waitress had no clue. Go there for the outside ambience and drinks, skip the food.
google avatar

Kyna M.

Yelp
Ah-mazing!!! Those crab cakes were sheer crab + secret seasoning. The lemon aioli was INCREDIBLE! Asparagus perfection. Beautifully grilled or sautéed I could not tell and it did not matter. Service was really kind and very efficient. Place was COVID clean. I'm so impressed and if I still lived here I'd be a REGULAR. THANK YOU, The Green Goat for being you, here and OPEN!!! (And open late and on a Monday ... hard things to find right now.) May your business BOOM. I'd love to come back in the daylight just to see how cute it is outside. People are eating out on the deck ... and I know we are near the Roanoke River. I'm told you can see it. If you haven't yet, Come!!

Belinda P.

Yelp
My family and I decided to eat here as a last minute choice and I'm glad we did! We ordered the Cobb Salad, the Black N Blue burger, the wings, and the Wildcat sandwich and they did not disappoint! The only thing i'm confused about is the 'Sweet and Spicy Asian Slaw'; What country in Asia? It tasted almost Korean but it was probably a blend of many countries. We recommend.

Yelp
Can I give 0 stars? We went last night and had the worst service ever. The hostess and server had terrible attitudes and acted like we were an inconvenience. It took 45 minutes to get an appetizer and another 30 to get our meals, which came out in 3 rounds over another 20 minutes. The food was undercooked and cold. We had to ask 3 times for silverware and water. When we asked for a drink menu, she brought it 20 Minutes later and literally threw it on the table and walked away. She never did come back and ask if we wanted to order drinks. We will Never go back.

Yelp
This place does not disappoint. The food is awesome. The atmosphere is great. The food is spectacular. The service is impeccable! Great place for family and friends gathering for great food and a good time! Went here a few days ago and had the Cubana. It was awesome. Returning with friends and co-workers, went back on Sunday for brunch, it was a simple full buffet with a station for eggs and waffles made to order. The cook was so good! Very impressive!!

Yelp
This is a good, dog-friendly restaurant just steps from the greenway. Fabulous outdoor seating and wonderful service. I want to come back and roast marshmallows one night! The food was mostly good. Shrimp tacos (special) were delicious and at my request came with Korean hot sauce - yum! My side salad was decent but had those icky cheap croutons like they serve at fast food places. I wasn't fond of the berry vinaigrette so I'll try a different dressing next time. My husband had a burger which was good but it only came with about five sweet potato tots. Overall a good dining experience and great location.

Yelp
Have eaten here three times. Service has been extremely slow every time but the food kept us coming back. The latest visit the service was slow, the food was iffy (obvious old produce/ slimy lettuce) and then to top it off a screaming match broke loose in the kitchen between staff, cementing my opinion that this "restaurant" is nothing more than a disappointment.
