In New Orleans’s Loud Food Culture, Casa Borrega Gives Mexico a Voice | Eater New Orleans

"Founded by Linda Stone, I regard the Green Project as a beloved paint-and-materials exchange hub in the Bywater neighborhood; Stone’s environmentalism directly informed Casa Borrega’s renovation and its emphasis on using recycled materials." - Clair Lorell

Google
Love the place! Been there many times and always find something I can use. Huge selection of old doors and old windows at a reasonable price. I have an old shotgun house with an odd size window. They had close to what I needed with a little trimming. Staff is friendly and courteous. They have large amounts of paint in a few colors cheap.

If you're into fixing up your house, you'll find some treasures in here. I have made it part of my weekly ritual. I've found some really cool light fixtures, glass tops, mirrors, and tons of miscellaneous stuff. If you have a creative mind, you'll love this place. You never know what you will find! :)

I’ve been wanting to go to this location for at least 6 to 8 months, but due to auto immune issues and COVID, I waited. But as I walked in yesterday, I laughingly told the Customer Service rep that it was my first time, and she took the time (rare!) to explain the layout of the store & asked what I was hoping to find. As I walked around, you’ll see the treasures both architecture, creative and practical or for the DYI self-contractor because of a storm…this is your place!! There’s even a workroom available!! So…great cause, friendly customer service and a whole building for creative growth & inspiration?? What’s not to love?? Highly Recommend!!

Google
The price gods must be crazy 🤣!!!! The price of the entire store's products are not affected at all by any kind of taxes or pricing in any form or fashion when it comes to tariffs! Every single ach item is screaming select ME PLEASE!!!!! only affected by the extreme discounts that the store is known for by everyone who has shopped there!!!! No other paint supplies store even exists for me anymore.

brittany B.

Google
This place is awesome! I feel like they really see the value in old stuff, like I do. They have buckets of nails/screws bolts that are a lil rusty b do the job for cents per pound! I left that store with a bag of nails and some painting tools for 2/3$ and was able to drop off some old lumber knowing it could be useful for somebody for a project!

Steve R.

Google
This is a Used Bookstore for architectural goodies, a recycling and reclamation center for doors, windows, frames, banisters, handles, you name it! It’s a wonderful idea of a store, executed with joy and good humor. A treasure-chest for home decorators and interior designers. Exterior designers, too! And it is so, so, so reasonably priced. What a great place!

Google
Seems to be a nice spot for household hardware. Employees are friendly and helpful.

Google
Awesome salvage place for almost anything you could imagine needing! They're got so many gorgeous antique doors, all sorts of glass in different sizes, windows, knobs, tools, wood pieces of all kinds of sizes, light fixtures, the list goes on and on. I bought some glass to build a terrarium table with and it was very reasonably priced. Definitely going to return for more craft supplies. It's way cheaper than going to a big box store and more sustainable as well, 10/10 would recommend. The place is warehouse style so it's hot in the summer, and lots of stuff is dusty so I'd recommend taking an antihistamine before going if you're prone to allergies like me.

Yelp
The Green project is a must for any DIY, creative maker, home improvement peoples or vintage/historic home owner. This multiroom warehouse offers a plethora of bits and bobs from donated and gathered home improvement wares. One time I picked up an old door, an old timey facet head and some hinges. From these super economical finds, I was able to fabricate a garden gate, using the faucet as a creative spin on a traditional doorknob or latch. I love it. Recently, I eye spied, a partially used tub of tile adhesive and several random tiles. They'd be the perfect solution with someone with a tiny bathroom or counter top that needed sprucing up. You can find doors, windows, screen, light fixtures, tiles, wood, paint, and a whole host of parts that you can't pick up at any big box store. Think of the green project like a thrift store for your house or creative endeavor. Be patient and diligent, as it can be hit or miss.

Yelp
This is a very important spot to know about if you own a historic home in the New Orleans area. There is a huge inventory of historic buildings in the New Orleans area which suffer due to the challenging environment of the region along with time that results in ongoing damage to different parts of these old buildings and it is hard to find replacement parts. The Green Project is essentially a graveyard of houses that have been sadly torn down and the remaining good parts salvaged which allows current homes to be repaired with the remains of destroyed ones. The biggest negative here is the sticker shock prices of many of the items as you are no longer getting good deals on many of the items which might have been much more possible right after Hurricane Katrina.

Ric S.

Yelp
Speaking as a donor of building materials, I think they are great. We have a 1940's house that we have updated over the years, saving some of the trim and detailing as we didn't want them in the dump. I was able to donate them and have them available for others to use them in repairing their house. A "win" all around,

Yelp
They have an endless supply of used doors, kitchen cabinets, windows, shutters, lights, building supplies, paint, tiles, wood, bricks - you name it. I so wish I had a creative eye for restoring/ building things. Maybe it could be my 2019 resolution:) I do know several people who bought doors and windows there, and they look amazing. I ended up buying just LED lights, that were insanely cheap- 50 cents a piece. I will definitely be back as their supply is constantly changing, and I definitely can get bricks and wood for my garden. They accept credit cards, but it has to be more than $5. They are also across the street from Harold's Plants. Go get your plants and seeds while you are in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Marian M.

Yelp
I was able to donate two ceiling fixtures that I had replaced in my home. I did not think to ask for a donation receipt and I wish that they had thought to offer one. However, I appreciate the ability to donate household items like leftover paint and fixtures that are still good but I can't use.
google avatar

Amber J.

Yelp
We came here looking for some cool finds. Not as many options as we had hoped, but luckily we found a lil door with the Orange paint marking it FREE. Not sure how often they do that with items, but we left with our FREE door and we'll be using it for a soon to be finished tree house. Yay! Thanks Green Project for giving items a second chance.
google avatar

Greg M.

Yelp
So much more interesting than Lowe's or Home Depot! Crazy array of doors, windows, shutters, etc. Fun to just look around and imagine the stories these pieces could tell! Not as many lights and fans, but certainly worth a look if you're in need of something unique for your home remodel project. It's very much a DIY shopping experience, so don't expect much in terms of customer service, however I'm guessing that if you ask they will help you out.

Yelp
What's to love about The Green Project: - The Green Project is concerned about protecting the environment (which I love) - they sell salvaged building materials at low cost - they are a paint and electronic waste recycling center - have monthly dropoffs for paint/e-waste at various locations around the city - workshops every saturday that are very educational - you can become a member and save 5% on your purchases as well as helping to fund some of their programs - they are a non-profit organization - you are always welcome to volunteer there Everyone there is so helpful. Kudos to Jamie, Beth, Christal, and the rest of the staff there. You guys rock!! So come check out The Green Project. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Lydia I.

Yelp
The sweetest and most outgoing people you will ever meet. I volunteered here for two days and it was one of the best experiences I've had in New Orleans!
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
Still a great value and a GREAT place to donate used or unnecessary building supplies. Since my last review, I've dropped off paint, paint and more paint, light fixtures, ceiling fans, a bathtub, sinks, the entire contents of my parents' condemned garage. The staff has always been great, helping us unload and asking questions about our donations. They were very impressed with my Dad's castoff collection of homemade tool boxes. Watch for paint drop off locations at alternate locations too. I've dropped off paint and both Hollygrove Market and Whole Food Uptown.
google avatar

Teneha B.

Yelp
Great Great find, especially Post Katrina. This place is a hodge-podge of finds. And to boot you can donate household items that you dare not throw away, but no longer need ie paints, doors, fences and the like. I love this little place. I continue to use it even beyond house rehabbing.
google avatar

Isabelle D.

Yelp
The Green Project is as good as it gets for low cost hardware and building supply stores. They are constantly changing merchandise due to the in store donation center. This is very convenient as it makes it a sort of one stop shop. They have a ton of doors, window sills, glass, marble/granite slabs, lighting and PAINT! They have an in house paint recycling program that enables them to sell tons of paint at a really low cost. They don't have any where as near as many options as Home Depot but the cost is great if you are on a budget. You'd be very surprised with how high the quality of the paint it.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Seriously they have just about everything and anything. If you are rehabbing a home and need to do it on the cheap or if you are and artist and need supplied or inspiration you will find it here. Paint for $3 a Gallon? Yep its here! I could spend hours strolling through this place and finding treasures
google avatar

Chad C.

Yelp
The King of Salvaged Building Materials in New Orleans. The Green Project has been promoting reuse and recycling since before Katrina. When recycling options were few and far between in the city, the Green Project picked up the slack and served as a makeshift recycling center. Yes, they have an excellent assortment of bath tubs, sinks, cabinets, hardware, doors, windows, and wrought iron, but they also host amazing environmentally-themed workshops and community events. Just this week they have an organic pest control lecture and a screening of Mardi Gras: Made in China. Also, they have a badass used lumbar yard. Since I've decided I want to make my own furniture with no prior skills, this place is going to be a great resource!
google avatar

Roxanne I.

Yelp
If you need some odd piece of house building, decorating, repairing type thing...this is the place! Not only is it massive in size but the prices are very reasonable! You need a cabinet, they got it. A bathtub needs replaced? They got lots to choose from. Oh, how about some random paint? Yup! They got that too. Oh, didn't realize you needed some obscure light switch or wiring do-ma-hickey? They most certainly have that too! Make sure you have ample time to browse around, you're gonna need it!

Yelp
Aside from the fact that I was disappointed to find out that the Green Project is NOT a medical marijuana dispensary (we're not in Denver anymore, Toto), I was really impressed with this place. For one, their mission is really cool. The Green Project operates a building supply store consisting of recycled materials. In addition to the retail space, they also (from the website) "operate a warehouse, lumberyard, paint recycling center, Recycle for the Arts, electronic waste recycling drop-offs, and environmental education programing." Yeah, this is all fine and good. But to invoke Janet Jackson, what has Green Project done for me lately (oooh oooh oooh yeah)? Well, they helped me alleviate some storage problems in my new place for ridiculously cheap. Yes, it's true that you might have a hard time finding furniture here, but it is possible. And here's how: They post furniture on Craigslist. So do a search for Green Project, grab the RSS feed, and get constant updates on their furniture inventory. The Green Project also regularly updates their Twitter account (@thegreenproject) with info on sales, free shit and such. Have you seen art around town using old window sashes? Yeah, if you have a little artistic flair, you can do that shit yourself. They have a huge selection of window sashes, which I think are like $5 a pop. One thing that really impressed me was how organized everything was. It would be easy to let everything devolve into a junk yard heap, but the staff has clearly taken care in organizing it all.

Yelp
I absolutely love the Green Project. Last week I had the chance to volunteer and help do some mail outs for their membership drive. If you ever have a moment and want to help out, this is definitely an appreciative organization who can definitely always use a little help. Definitely check them out. This store is great for paints! They recycle paint people. You can bring in old paint and get recycled paint and make magic happen in your house. You really can't get any better than that. The latest visit I saw a lot of cabinets! wonderful condition cabinets, you really can't get any better than that. Right now they have a overload of window panels, I mean these are some quality buys for cheap. Throughout the store you can find many cool buys for your home from doorknobs to even armoires.
google avatar

Bert S.

Yelp
There is so much cool shit here. There are piles and piles of old bricks, badass decorative wrought iron pieces, lumber in every dimension, buckets of nails, a literal yard full of sinks and tubs. They sell all kinds of used hardware, including hundred year old locks and crystal door knobs. Speaking of doors, they have doors in all sizes and usually some furniture and fancy light fixtures too. I bought a bunch of bricks with more character than I could find at other building supply places for about a quarter of the price. I bought wrought iron pieces and turned them in to pot racks and tables. I always buy some wood when I go just for scraps and small projects. Pretty much all of my nails and screws used. My wife wants to buy a claw foot tub and convert it to a chaise lounge, and if we do that, I'm almost positive the tub will come from here. I recommend coming here to get ideas for future projects, or coming here once you know what you want to do to see if you can save some money and the environment. The only thing that stops this place from getting 5 stars is the lack of AC. Yes, I am a big ole titty baby.
google avatar

Sheri C.

Yelp
I like this place. not only because it has so much random stuff, but because it is affordable. and it I LOVE the purpose behind the store. I love that we can bring stuff there, and it may be someone else's treasure. The staff is very friendly, and I also like that they keep it organized.

Yelp
In from out of town doing an artist residency for the month. I believe in supporting anything locally owned or that has (in this case - had) good community intentions and support. I had heard rumors before I went they were cheap with slim pickings and the customer service had done a 180. Not to go.... Wanting to give the benefit if the doubt, I went anyway. Purchased some items. Talked to the somewhat rude manager about offering a discount if I were to purchase a good amount of material. Which he declined. Then after some discussion he kindly gave me $20 off my purchase which I appreciated. We agreed to hold my wood purchase inside the main building since I knew it would rain this weekend, only to show up with half of my purchase taken outside to sit in the rain. Completely baffled after I confirmed the date of pick up (which was two days later). I just could not understand at all! ReallyAfter my purchase, the community came out of the woodwork telling me they are not the place of old and the locals prefer not to support this place. - I hear Rickers or Strippies (sp?) is a better place to support Not good customer service and items of not very good quality. But good enough if your creative. The manager finally refunded part of my purchase (instead of mandatory store credit). Which again, I appreciated. However, the kicker is, an employee (noticeable) by her (?) reggae beanie hat decided to engage with snarky comments toward me and belittling me. I told her I tried to support a local business only to get condescending remarks like "oh, thank you for help save us" and so on. Telling me since I was from out of town, it was a wonder why I was complaining. Problem is. I was actually with an ex-employee and permanent resident who commented he was offended by her (?) comments and behavior. I will gladly pay more money and go the bank which is family owned, professional and courteous.
google avatar

Sebrina B.

Yelp
Suprisingly well organized. I was just there to price out some projects I was considering for the backyard and will definitely be back to purchase when we decide what we want to do. They have all ranges of materials. Some that need very little help to be usable and some which require elbow grease.
google avatar

Catie K.

Yelp
If I owned a house, I would be here all the time. The inventory changes a lot, so if you don't find what you're looking for, chances are they'll have it the next time you go in. They have a huge selection of windows and doors. Some areas are closed-toe shoes only, so keep that in mind.
google avatar

Mallory W.

Yelp
The Green Project runs a salvaged hardware store as well as a program called Recycle for the Arts. This non-profit does great work, providing low-cost building materials and keeping these supplies out of the landfill. Because it's all salvaged materials, you have to approach it the way you would a thrift store. If you go in looking for something too specific, you may not find it. But if you go and browse periodically and keep an open mind, you can come back with some treasures. The Green Project is a great resource for artists, for all of the wood, paint and building materials they recycle as well as the Recycle for the Arts shop that is there. You can find all sorts of low cost art supplies, costumes, fabric trims, paints, picture trim and more. They also offer recycling drop-off for certain materials, like newspaper, cardboard and aluminum.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
Low cost supplies for materials for projects around your house. I gave 4 of 5 only because the cashier seemed more interested in her IM Chat then helping us. The layout is pretty good, easy to find stuff and most of the people working there are really nice. Every week it changes, so if your looking for unique stuff you might want to go every weekend to see whats new. I bought wood and paint, the wood worked out perfect, the paint was mislabeled so we couldn't use it. It was pretty cool seeing the train go by while looking around. Next project i have around the house i will be sure to check them out first to see if i can score on cheap materials.

Yelp
What an amazing concept in New Orleans! I love this place! I have only used Sherwin Williams and DeVoe paint so I was a bit reluctant to purchase paint for my home project at The Green Project. Seriously, how can you pass up $10 a gallon for paint though?? I must say, this was the best quality paint I have EVER used! It was super thick, only needing one coat and completely filled to the top (unlike storebrand paint!) I am thrilled to have this resource in our city and can not recommend it enough!
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
If you're looking for extremely low cost paint, and aren't too particular about the exact color, then go to The Green Project! I have bought small cans of paint for less than a dollar for little art projects and also bought a full gallon of "new" recycled paint for my living room for about $8 (I think that's how much it was, might have been less). It looks great! Overall I'd say this is a place you should stop at to see if they have what you need before going anywhere else. Stock changes frequently so if you see something you like you'd better pick it up or it will probably be gone next time you stop in. In general they have a good selection of used/recycled wood, bricks, doors, windows and paint. They also have some cabinets, mixed hardware and plumbing items. Toss in a few unique items that come through now and then and you've got a great store for anyone looking to complete a project but don't need anything too specific as far as color, size, etc. goes.
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
awesome. Buy recycled wood or widow frames or doors or fire places here. They also do recycled paint. Drop off old paint of left over wood so it may be reused ! Discount for non-profits
google avatar

Corinna C.

Yelp
The staff is great. The concept is of course wonderful. I don't always find what I need and yeah, the prices can be high but occasionally you find a really great deal and it makes it all better. We've been renovating a +150 year old camelback double for the last 2 years and salvage is the only way to go. The condition of a lot of their stuff isn't great. It's old, what do you expect?? But we have found some gems, especially in the door department. I have a strict rule that we replace all windows and doors with historically accurate ones and the GP as helped me to stick to that. Thanks for being there for us!
google avatar

Cheryl R.

Yelp
A GREAT place to go for recycled material - every thing from doors to art supplies to safety glasses, ear plugs, paints, stains, tiles - etc, etc, etc ... & can I say nice & orderly!!! you don't feel like things are going to fall all over you with one wrong move (& being the clutz that I am, you have to worry about things like that!!) oh & they have workshops too - how cool are they?? ... cool!!! reduce reuse recycle!!
google avatar

Sam 'Wags' W.

Yelp
Great concept, inventory is always changing, affordable prices, and all while helping New Orleans to be GREEN!
google avatar

Vicky L.

Yelp
I love this place. walk in with some imagination, and you can come out with a new house! Although they do not have a large amount of one product, they have lots to choose from. Like I said, use your imagination - matchy-matchy is gets boring really fast. and keep coming back because they have new stuff all the time.
google avatar

Bobby B.

Yelp
This is one of those places where you can go back over and over again. It's constantly changing and whenever we want ideas for our not-yet-found-house, we go here and stroll around. Usually, combining this with a trip across the train tracks to Harold's. There are worse ways to spend a few hours.
google avatar

Tina H.

Yelp
A must go to place for all your building needs. The Green Project is my favorite place to go to if I need cheap paint or supplies for a project. The staff is very friendly and they have a huge selection of building materials. Anything from old doors to salvaged wood. The Green Project is the perfect place to brainstorm ideas for a new art project. Cutting cost and saving the environment! What a perfect combination! You gotta check it out.
google avatar

Berlíce B.

Yelp
I love this place so much. If you ever have an art project or if you want to fix up your house check this place out before going anywhere else. Chances are they will have what you need and you might even be inspired by the random finds in the store to try something new. Everything is so cheap and you are out the environment and community, it's a win all around. The idea of the green project alone makes it worth while. The staff is very helpful too. This place is ideal for Dyi projects of all kinds.

.m P.

Yelp
When this store first opened it was great. materials which would a lower income neighborhood improve the condition of their homes. Paint was $3.00 a gallon and now it is $10.00. How can the price of donated paint go up. The prices are high considering the condition of most items. Once the young whitd kids and the nthe decorators showed up ,it went to HELL IN A BASKET!!!!!!!! Was a great idea, but I would just as soon go to Riccas... Same price, much better material.
google avatar

Mike O.

Yelp
Great place for DIY people. I found some cool old doors and windows and great paint for them to decorate my office. The staff was helpful and the selection is huge.
google avatar

Ruth W.

Yelp
underwhelmed by this place. I have been many times and never purchased a thing. a lot of items seem way overpriced and some seem like they are just plain trash. I am as green as I can be, but no joy here.
google avatar

Heather L.

Yelp
I love this place. I use it for my home and business. The staff is super friendly, the prices are unbeatable, and the selection is always eclectic and entertaining. I run a gallery & studio and the GP is my go-to source for all my do-hicky needs. I have framed entire gallery shows from GP stuff and all my studio tables & shelves have been built/acquired there. Almost all my house projects are accomplished from GP materials as well, from replacing old shutters to running wiring, and from installing a new bathroom to redoing my garden. Perfect Perfect Perfect.
google avatar

Emily W.

Yelp
A bit dissapointed by the selection here. For the quality I feel the prices were high. Have rented equipment from here before and that's great but as far as the diy projects I was hoping for .... didn't seem like I could save a lot of money going this route.
google avatar

Isaac P.

Yelp
Great concept. Awesome place. Friendly people. Free/cheap weekend classes. Cheap membership. Lots of promotions... Expect to spend a long time finding exactly what you are looking for though. Probably the largest & cheapest (best priced) used door section I have seen around.
google avatar

Katie A.

Yelp
If you're into building stuff, are an artist or artisan or contractor, or just like having random crap around, this is your fucking place. There's basically anything you need for basic refurbishment or replacement of household stuff, like doors and windows and even some prefab counters and cupboards and stuff. Lots of light fixtures and wood planks and even some decent looking wrought iron, toilets, sinks, paint, hardware, and that's just the stuff that my untrained eye could identify. The prices are very low because everything is recycled. I totally love the idea of this and recycling and reusing. But this is my Yelp review, so I'm going to selfishly take some starts off because everything requires a very large amount of TLC and probably even more equipment before being even close to presentable. So, like I said, if you're into that, you will absolutely love the Green Project. If you're like me and are really proud of yourself just for knowing how to use a basic electric screw driver...well, you're gonna leave here with an extra coat of dirt on your shoes and not much else. I wish I had that eye, or the time, or the patience, but I do not and will probably never be here again. I wish them all the best in their mission and I hope others will check out the Green Project before buying new stuff. You may find a hidden treasure for cheap.
google avatar

Lindsay A.

Yelp
I was recently in the process of revamping my rental property. I needed some new doors and I was having a horrible time dealing with the staff at both Lowes and Home Depot. They wanted to sell me full door frames, but all I needed was the door and the price point with installation was out of my budget. My mom actually suggested we try looking at the Green Project. I had been there many times and had found several items to transform and use in my home over the past few years. I knew they had many reclaimed doors, but it had never crossed my mind to use them for this particular project. It was probably one of the freaking hottest days of the year when we searched the inventory for my appropriate sized doors. There were so many doors! Finally we found the three correct sizes, loaded up the cart and headed out. I bought three doors, one exterior and two interior, for $85! What a steal! I love the idea of recycling these reclaimed products to use in my own home and they will definitely come to mind first when I start projects around the home. The best advice I can offer is to have patience and use the staff for questions.

Ida G.

Yelp
A great, affordable resource for home renovators on a budget. A lot of their inventory is on the newer side. Don't expect to find a lot of the exclusive old stuff you see at Riccas or The Bank. However, they do have some older building materials if you are willing to hunt around. Love the recycled paint...very cheap and interesting colors. They had tile, including some granite tile, enough for a small project. Lots of window sashes and doors. I got a double cast iron sink for $30 on half price day. If you're on a tight budget and renovating, I'd stop here first. Their prices are great. They will also take your old building items. Love this place.

Yelp
even though its a salvage store they are not super cheap...can find some decent stuff sometimes
