I don’t think I’ve ever written a bad review before, so forgive me if it’s a little incoherent.
A lovely hotel, a wonderful room and food to die for, but all I remember is getting ripped off at checkout and the hotel staff agreeing that they would feel the same in my position and would raise this with the appropriate person. Doesn’t help me but at least they felt the same. No offer for a manager - just presented me with the card machine like she’s probably done for countless others in the same boat.
So, here’s the story:
Booked an overnight stay with dinner, bed and breakfast, plus extras which included a massage for my wife and I, and afternoon tea. Agreed with the price over the phone with the hotel booking team and double checked that everything was for 2, (dinner, breakfast, massage and afternoon tea) which they repeatedly confirmed - so went online and booked feeling assured!
Confirmation came through only to see the massage was for 1. I called and spoke to reception only to find out that what was advised on the phone was incorrect and the massage was only for one, and there was no other availability for myself. Disappointment number 1, I accepted this was a mistake made by their booking team and proceeded with the booking anyway and would just lie to my wife about my massage so she didn’t feel bad going in solo.
Disappointment number 2. This trip for wife’s 40th birthday was going great despite the booking hiccup, until we sat down for afternoon tea shortly before departing, only to be approached by staff to talk about money in front of the person the occasion was a gift for.
I said I would clear it up with reception after, only to be approached again by the staff who proceeded to embarrass me in front of other diners who stopped eating themselves to listen to them discuss costs and the confusion over our booking.
During the final moment of our stay, I was told that despite the total being £634 for the package we’ve chosen and the extras we’ve selected, I was told that the afternoon tea wasn’t included in this price,
and that only the price of one of the extras was included, despite all of them being added to the booking at checkout. This was only confirmed after we’d starting eating which is a little late after we’re half way through.
In all honesty, for £70 (the price of the afternoon tea for 2) I would have opted for a full meal in the restaurant which would have likely been much less.
In summary, I probably wouldn’t have booked the stay if I knew that it would £70 more than the booking online suggested and nowhere online or the booking confirmation does it say this is not included in the price, only that it’s included on the booking.
This is close to intentional misrepresentation and left nothing but a sour taste in my mouth, and left my wife feeling embarrassed on her big weekend and now guilty knowing I had to forgo a massage too and just hide in the spa because I was badly advised during my booking enquiry.
Despite the great hotel service and a lovely time spent in the venue, the overall experience is tarnished and wished I had booked elsewhere.
I would simply say to other prospective guests to enquire by phone that all costs are represented on your booking to avoid the same hidden cost and disappointment at checkout.
Photo attached showing all items on the booking and the total, but apparently we have to pay on top for the afternoon tea. Completely hidden cost and I don’t like that type of sly trick!
Wish I could just get a full refund and try this all over again somewhere else.
