19 Places For A Casual Meal Near NYU

"The Grey Dog is a casual cafe where you can have a salad or sandwich while reading lecture notes on your laptop. It’s open all day, which makes it a solid utility option for breakfast or lunch meetings. If you don’t want to deal with the seat-yourself (glare at people until they stand up) table policy, grab the brussels sprout salad or cheese steak wrap to-go." - hannah albertine, matt tervooren

Grey Dog is always a go-to of mine whenever I'm craving classic brunch food for any time of the day! Their brunch menu is until 3-4 pm, but they still have traditional sandwich, salad, and bowl selections throughout the day. Love their extensive menu with ample drink options as well. I ordered their Vegan Burger to try something new, and it tasted delicious! It was seasoned very well, and wasn't overly "non-meat tasting", like some vegan patties out there. My friends got the Fried Chicken Sandwich, which they mentioned had a nice slaw inside, and the B.L.A.T., which was a bit tricky for them to eat bc of the thick bacon, but was still enjoyed! Love that they have condiments already on the table. Their hot sauce was extremely mild and gave my burger an elevated taste! Quick, efficient service. Overall, a solid spot that I keep on my go-to brunch options!

Google
Had a great breakfast at The Grey Dog in Flatiron. The vibe was relaxed and the patio was perfect. My server, Omanie, was awesome—super friendly, knew the menu well, made great recommendations, and was careful with my food allergy. I had the breakfast bowl and a coffee, and both were exactly what I wanted. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in NYC!

Google
The atmosphere was inviting, and the staff were warm and friendly, though service could have been more attentive. The menu had its highs and lows - some dishes stood out with great flavor and presentation like the crispy rice/artichokes, while others were just average like the hummus dish. Overall, it was a pleasant experience.

Google
Shout out to our server, Molly and her team, who had to clean up two spilled chocolate milks, the restaurant has nice outdoor and indoor seating, clean restrooms and the food is great. Definitely try the pistachio salted caramel pancakes if you have a sweet tooth.

Google
Great atmosphere and decor. They have happy hour until 6:30 daily. Had a margarita that was very good for the price. Also had the pistachio salad and it was amazing. Definitely recommend.

Google
The staff at Thrift NYC recommended this place and I needed fuel to survive the social at You Should Be Dancing. It was cold and rainy outside like London. The hostess was warm and friendly and the chicken soup with meatballs + chamomile tea was exactly what I needed. I imagine this place is even better on sunny days but they were excellent in a pinch.

Google
The food was amazing. Full stop. That alone could be a review but I’ll try to keep my review short. They were very busy, but the wait time given was accurate and our food arrived very quickly once we ordered. The staff were very friendly and contributed to the fun/positive atmosphere. Will be returning on my next visit.

Google
On Vacation from the UK and staying locally. My aim was to try a different breakfast place each day but The Grey Dog was so good we came back 4 times! Busy but friendly service, food wait was OK, they have a children’s menu too. Love the Bacon and Sausage. Worth a visit!

Yelp
Went to sit down with a group of 6 and even though the restaurant was packed, the host did a really good job accommodating us. He was friendly, welcoming, and super nice, which set an amazing impression from the start. We were able to sit within 30 minutes, and service was quick despite the bustle inside. The interior of the restaurant is cozy and gives a nice homey feel, and the atmosphere is perfect for brunch especially on a cold day. The fried chicken and Johnny cakes were delectable. The cornmeal pancakes were so pleasant with texture and flavor that my partner was thinking about them the rest of the day. Personally, the fried chicken was not my favorite; however, I like that they used a different breading than what I normally see for a breakfast fried chicken. All in all, for the price point of being in NYC as a nice restaurant, the experience this meal was affordable and delectable!

Yelp
After visiting the FIT Museum, we wandered in for lunch and were instantly charmed. The decor--including a working fireplace--had a quirky, inviting vibe. The place was lively and bustling, adding to the experience. The hostess and wait staff were warm and welcoming. We started with the beets and artichokes, along with the pistachio and avocado salad. Normally, I'd go for a meat dish, so I had high expectations and they were met! They were absolutely delicious, perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of sauce/dressing. My only regret? Cheerfully telling the hostess that a high-top stool table was "just fine." Halfway through the meal, my leg staged a protest and fell asleep--not a complaint, just a friendly heads-up for anyone else with similar issues! I'm a frequent visitor to the FIT museum so I will be back.

Yelp
Overall solid spot for eating an eclectic breakfast or lunch, depending on what you fancy. The menu is packed with options including a variety of salads, bowls, and sandwiches. The inside decor feels like you're on vacation with elements of a tiki bar and the feel that you're so close to the beach. The food was actually quite good. I ordered the breakfast bowl coming with hummus, avocado, and zucchini. The ingredients tasted fresh and packed full with a flavorful punch. Unfortunately substitutions were not really available (eg egg white) and it took a bit longer to get the attention of our waitress including for the check. Overall I would come back here and add it to my list of good restaurants for the area. But I would not break my neck just to get another table given all the variety that exists here in this part of town.

Yelp
The food was amazing!! We tried the cheese curds, the spinach artichoke dip, the Mexican bowl with tofu and the fried chicken sandwich. The atmosphere was fun and upbeat. We went in around 345 so it wasn't busy but the food came out quickly. The service was top-notch! The woman helping us was super sweet. The margaritas are A+!

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. This is our second trip to New York and we come eat here atleast once. The food is wonderful and I love their coffee ! It's such a vibe with really cool decor. The service has been really good , I have no complaints. We've done breakfast and lunch here and everything is delicious !

Yelp
With their multiple locations throughout NYC, The Grey Dog has been holding their own as a go to Breakfast/ Brunch spot since 1996. What longevity! And from the looks of things I suspect they should be around for another 28 years. The Grey Dog has a comfortable Dive Bar type vibe, with cool music plus a bevy of staff that were efficient and energetic. For breakfast I was undecided between the Chicken and Waffles, which is not a usual for me or Grey Dog's breakfast. I ended up opting for the latter. The large platters consists of eggs any style, home fries, a choice of breakfast protein plus either French Toast or Pancakes. I asked if the Johnny Cakes (Cornmeal Pancakes) could be subbed instead, which was an easy yes. Choosing the Johnny Cakes, kicked up my breakfast flavors making it 10x's better than choosing Pancakes or French Toast. I noticed the pics on Yelp suggests that most choose either French Toast or regular Pancakes when opting for Grey Dog's Breakfast. If you're a fan of cornmeal type items then don't sleep on the Johnny Cakes! After breakfast, the question arose...'would you come here again?' I'd absolutely come back again, especially for the Johnny Cakes. :)

Yelp
I met a friend a friend here for lunch today and had a great time. I had The Grey's Dog Breakfast (scrambled eggs, home fries, pancakes and bacon); for $19 it's a great deal. I also got an espresso martini. My friend had the salted caramel pancakes and a house iced team. She wanted a mocktail but unfortunately they were all out. All the components of my dish were delicious. They make really great pancakes here. The espresso martini was ok. The real star of the show were the salted caramel pancakes. My friend cut me a huge chunk to try and they were AMAZING. I told my fiancé I need to bring him just so I can get these pancakes. The interior is nice and service was great. I can't wait to come back to get the salted caramel pancakes. I was also eyeing the mac and cheese and spiced Mexican hot chocolate for my next visit.

Yelp
The eggs and potatoes were really good. The cold brew and French toast - not so much. Service was good.

Yelp
- friendly service - fast turnover time - tasty turkey and bacon jam sandwich - tasty hibiscus mimosa - likely environment - was quickly seated on a weekday at 11am - very delicious cheesesteak - I liked the sweet potato fries - they were out of mocktails - bottomless coffee - don't get this place confused with the grey, next door

Yelp
I walked in as a group of 3 on a Saturday morning at approximately 9:30am. We were seated immediately and shortly after the restaurant became packed at peak brunch hour. I ordered the breakfast bowl. The hummus at the bottom was fresh and good to spread onto the bread. The poached egg was cooked well. It was a very filling and healthy meal. It is a standard reliable family style American brunch restaurant that gets very busy and quite loud during brunch time. There is only one bathroom for the entire restaurant so the line can get quite long. We were rushed to pay the bill as they needed the table for the next party.

Yelp
We came on a weekend and were able to be seated immediately outside. I always order the Grey Dog Breakfast, which comes with a good variety of items. I got the french toast, eggs, bacon, and home fries, and the portion size is filling. This time the service outside was a bit slow.

Yelp
Walked about 10 blocks south to visit this cozy breakfast spot before heading over to check The High Line and The Vessel at Hudson Yards. I really enjoyed the friendly atmosphere as well as the delicious food (a veggie scramble for my partner and a chorizo scramble for me). Loved the decor; it took us a while to find our CA license plate among the 50 states on display, but we eventually did. Very cool place.

Yelp
Cute small place with good options for lunch and breakfast. Hostess originally said 20 minutes or more wait which is fine on a busy morning, we went to a coffee place and got a text to come back within 5 minutes. Service was a tad slow, folks sat after our food order was in got their meals before ours with similar meals. Overall, the food was very tasty, the chicken was a bit tough in some places but the flavor was great.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in the city. Delicious and adorable. So cozy! I go every time I'm in the city.

Very cool breakfast spot! Highly recommend - food and service on point! We came directly from the airport and were not disappointed.

Yelp
Chicken wings were amazing-we had the bbq. Super atmosphere...chill and fun. Service was also excellent. Will be back.

Yelp
{Overall: 4; Food: 4} Service: 4; Ambiance: 3.5 The Grey Dog is a popular place to have brunch. It serves breakfast staples and a selection of casual lunch options at a good price point. It's great if you're looking for a casual place to for a quick catch up with a friend or a quick meal. It's not a great place to hang around and chat because it's so popular. The location in Flatiron has a big space, but make a reservation if you want to avoid a wait.
google avatar

Yelp
The staff are amazing. They ran out of cranberry juice (a person in our party wanted a vodka/cran) and they literally ran across the street to buy some! You can't ask for better service. It's small but nicely organized to be comfortable. The food was alright. I can't say it was amazing cause I didn't personally order food. But they're a wonderful crew.
google avatar

Yelp
Very busy during happy hour!! Make a reservation! It was a very lively atmosphere for most of the time we were there. They have good happy hour deals for drinks and food. My friend took advantage of the drink specials and enjoyed $7 margs and glow up mules. I ordered the strawberry and basil shrub (non-alcoholic drink). It wasn't too sweet. It had muddled strawberries, which I liked eating. You could barely taste the basil which didn't bother me. I devoured the Mexican bowl. I love cilantro rice! There was practically a whole avocado on top. I couldn't even eat all the chicken there was so much.

Yelp
Came for early morning breakfast on Sunday. Blueberry pancakes, bacon, sausage patties and coffee. Food was standard. Blueberry pancakes, ok. Nothing special. Bacon crispy, sausage nicely cooked and tasty. Not enough syrup to start. Coffee ehh...maybe I'm too hooked on a tall blonde from Starbucks. The coffee, not the barista. Service was ok. Attention ample. Nice decor and pleasant decorations. The ambience was calm and serene. Good conversational volume. I would go back

Jill P.

Yelp
Great food, cool vibe and fast service. My daughter and I went on our last morning in NYC and it was perfect!!!

Yelp
Food was decent, service is good and ambiance is fine. Solid spot for a quick bite to eat with friends with good happy hour options.

Yelp
The Grey Dog was just okay, I'd give the ambiance and service a 5 and the food a 3. We went on Friday morning and waited just about 10-15 minutes. It's a really cool spot near Flatiron, and seemingly one of the only breakfast places in this immediate area. The decor was great! It's really cozy and cute inside. Our waitress was also phenomenal. She was super sweet and attentive. The food is where I think they miss the mark (not entirely but just need some tweaking). I ordered the chicken and waffles at the recommendation of the waitress. Great flavor! The waffles were fluffy and the syrup was tasty, sweet and spicy. The chicken was a little tough, though. My friend got the egg and cheese croissant sandwich with a side of breakfast potatoes. She said it was just okay. I did try the potatoes and while they're a great size, look appetizing, and were cooked perfectly, they had zero seasoning! I think just a little salt and pepper even would have made these more enjoyable. I would go back to try other options, maybe even for lunch, but we were just meh about our (food) experience here. I wouldn't go out of my way to dine here again, but it's not a terrible choice.

Yelp
This place has our heart! You can go at any day-even busiest weekends and you can find table without waiting in lines. Bestt for brunch. Their vibe and service is top notch. Love all their brunch items and bowls but this time had their crispy chicken bowl-which was amazinggg- also love their cold brew and Iced latte. My friend tried their Omellete which was really good too. This is the place i take all my friends to when they visit NYC.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a great happy hour spot! We loved the tots, the shrimp app tasted like the mamba's tapas, the wings were nothing of note but I did like how it came with veggies, the sticky nugs were kind of weird and the Brussels sprouts were okay, overall great prices and would come back!!
google avatar

Holly D.

Yelp
Our server was so sweet and super helpful with suggesting items to get. We had the buttermilk chicken sandwich and chopped salad with crispy chicken and loved it! the chipotle mayo was really good. Decorated very nice for the holiday season!!
google avatar

Yelp
I really like The Grey Dog for brunch! We got a reservation that same morning for a few hours later and glad we did because they already had a line by 10am! The ambience was so nice and we were seated quickly. Service was a little slow filling up coffees, but it was a bit busy. My boyfriend and I ordered the french toast and classic omelette to share and the french toast was some of the best french toast I've ever had!!! The bread was nice and thick with delectable jam. The eggs were great and the home fries were so crisp! Our friends liked their food as well and had nothing bad to say! Definitely a great brunch spot!
google avatar

Regina S.

Yelp
Great lunch spot - cozy casual atmosphere, serving eggs, sandwiches and other comforting classics in a laidback environment. They also have drinks but after a long day of walking we stuck to water which they frequently refilled   Food was quick, warm and good portion sizes.  breakfasts bowl had an entire half of a avocado which I wasn't expecting nice pleasant surprise. sweet potato fries were a perfect size and easy to share but also can be eaten along (I was hungry lol).   Solid lunch and brunch choice

Marissa C.

Yelp
The decor of this place is absolutely adorable. Service was a bit slow, people seated after us got their food well before we did. They were very busy. They said our wait would be 20 min but was only about 5 min. The food was good but was bummed they were out of Brussel sprouts.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
A lot of food. Wife's pancakes were wonderful with real maple syrup and blueberries in the pancakes.
google avatar

Susann O.

Yelp
Love Love Love the Grey Dog. Best place to just grab a beer ( Montauk) and a bite any time of day. Food is always solid but the staff is what levels this place up. Brooke, Imani (spelling?) are consistent in service level! Top Notch.
google avatar

Sandra P.

Yelp
Stopped in for happy hour (great margarita) and some fried mozzarella. This is a nice restaurant, including some outdoor seating. The service was great and everything on the menu looked good, and decently priced.

Yelp
I get the appeal for its several locations! Feeling some brunch after a workout, we came here as walk-ins. The wait was not bad at all on a weekend afternoon, and we were seated outdoors. This caters more to groups, as the two party tables are more cramp. I was impressed by how fast the food came, as that has been a while. I highly recommend the Grey Dog's Breakfast ($18.50), as it satisfies both a sweet and savory palette. Everything was cooked perfectly. Their home fries were more crispier and fried compared to the usual diner ones, and their sausage was also juicy and flavorful. By the time I moved to the sweet french toast, I was stuffed, but they were nice plump pieces. This was very juxtaposed to my boyfriend's Grey Dog Club ($17.50) that had extremely dry bread, with a just as dry chicken breast. I wouldn't recommend, but their fries were nice and crispy. Their Mango and Peach Fizz ($8) was fun and sweet at first, before it becomes watered down at the end. The Large Cold Brew ($5.50) could come with an Oat Milk on the side with no extra charge! Overall, would come again to try their alcoholic drinks. Although I would be unsure what to try next off their food menu.
google avatar

Yelp
The service was fine and the ambiance was chill but the food was horrible. Very disappointed.

Yelp
Came for brunch and didn't have super high expectations but everything was great !! I'm not easily pleased by brunch unless they're doing something special so here it goes - FRENCH TOAST 5/5 This is a contender for best French toast on the city? That mint berry if used syrup with that fluffy soft cloud like toast with a slight char - UGH!! Underrated !! Do yourself a favor and try their french toast. CHICKEN CLUB 4/5 The mood struck for a chicken club and I'll say the heaping serving of chicken with that lovely plentiful cheesiness, fresh bread is just A+. While less on the refreshing side of what I imagine a club to be, it is quite good still.
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
We had a great brunch at The grey dog! The food was yummy and our waitress was lovely. The atmosphere is light and relaxed plus warm! lol It was just what we needed on a cold December morning.
google avatar

Kenneth E.

Yelp
Came here with a friend for happy hour and it was a pretty cool place! They have really cheap drinks even though the ambiance is really nice. $4 beers, $6 wines, and $7 margs until 7pm. The service was super friendly, the crowd was calm and nice making it a perfectly place to catch up with friends. The margs were a little sweet, but the beers were great. We also tried the grilled cheese dippers which were super delicious. Would definitely stop in again!
google avatar

Jami D.

Yelp
Gorgeous weather, table to myself, and the best salad I've had in a long time! Would definitely go back!
google avatar

Yelp
Great place for brunch. All or the Staff were cool, and helpful. Quick service. Our selections were great, with a bit of uniqueness. Cool setting.
google avatar

Paul W.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere and good food. The rest does get busy so waits are probable. I enjoyed my burger and fries

Erika P.

Yelp
Food was good, the service was quick. Each table it is a tight squeeze between them, you get to hear everything the table next to you is saying.
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
Loved this place! Perfect breakfast and loved that there was no upcharge for subbing (a very nice and generously sized) fruit salad for hash browns. Very peaceful, cheerful ambience and friendly, competent servers. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Mayuka K.

Yelp
Grey dog is one my my favorite brunch restaurant! All of their foods are good but I always order the Grey Dog breakfast which comes with either pancake or french toast and you can choose a side from avocado, sausage or bacon, and you can choose what kind of egg you want. I usually get French toast as they're so thick and delicious! I love the syrup that comes with it too. And I'm a poached egg lover so I all order it too. I would definitely recommend this place and you can find Grey dog in different locations in the city. Every location has little different plating so you can enjoy it too!
google avatar

Beatriz K.

Yelp
Yum-Yum! The Chilaquiles breakfast and Espresso Martini were scrum-dilly-umptious!!! Its great place for a great meal in a great city!!!!
google avatar

Maggie B.

Yelp
I came here for a work lunch with a group of seven. They had our table ready and waiting for us when we arrived. The restaurant decor was cozy and welcoming. To start, we shared several apps. The fried brussel sprouts were deliciously crispy. The fried artichokes were also tasty and I loved the tangy richness of the lemon aioli, but some of the artichoke leaves were a bit tough to chew. We also tried the vegan popcorn chicken and sweet potato beignets. This dish was a bit dry, but nicely complemented by the green goddess sauce. For my main, I got the vegan buffalo fried chicken sandwich. The portion size was quite large. I enjoyed it, but was expecting a bit of a bolder flavor. The sandwich was served with shoestring fries, which were crispy and subtly seasoned. Our server was very friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
I take all my customers here. It's quick, the food is always good and it's a must go to when you are in flatiron!
google avatar

Samantha D.

Yelp
the food and service are amazing and this location! I usually go to the one in downtown

Yelp
Everything here is amazing, especially if you are trying to dine out in the city with kiddos. Bathrooms have changing tables and are clean. They are also big enough to bring toddlers in with you to go potty. Food is amazing. My kids devoured their eggs, sausage, and dog bone pancakes. They ask to come back for them. My wife and I love the hash bowl and other offerings. Tasty, flavorful, warm, filling. Service is top notch. From Hostess to servers to table clearers, they were kind and helpful. 10 outta 10 recommend!
