My wife and I decided to wait until the week after Valentine's day to treat ourselves to a night out to dinner and cocktails.
After a not-so-great dinner at a separate location (not even worth mentioning) it was high time for a cocktail. And with my dinner experience leaving much to be desired in the way of a pleasant evening out, I admit I was not in a great mood and not enjoying the evening at all. The Grey Hen completely turned my night around.
Atmosphere:
Firstly, we were sat directly at the beautiful and hand crafted bar. Those of you who are seated inside, do yourselves a favor a look directly up at the large taxidermy Nile River crocodile. I absolutely love themed bars and this experience made me feel as if I was sitting in an old fashioned New Orleans speakeasy or a Bayou apothecary. There are plenty of items to look at with their own stories and names that have been come up with by the staff. My entire 90 minute experience was spent pouring over every detail in between conversation with our bartender, my wife, and sipping delicious drinks.
Staff:
I feel awful for not recalling our bartenders name but he was very kind and informative. He made excellent conversation and answered every question we posed; From the history of the bar, to the prep work for the drinks, to personal questions regarding his 19 years of experience in craft-cocktail bartending. We could not have asked for a better representative for our first experience at Grey Hen.
Liquor Selection:
I am a bourbon fan myself and Grey Hen has an excellent selection of bourbons. Whether its Old Forester, Blantons, Stagg Jr, Colonel Taylor, or several other staples out of the roster of tasty and hard to find bourbons, Grey Hen is fully stocked.
Even though their catalog tends to be Bourbon and whiskey forward, they have a great selection of Cognacs, Brandys, Tequilas, Mezcals, and other spirits.
Finally... The drinks:
Plainly stated, do yourselves another favor and order the Clarified Milk Punch (pictured) before anything else. Its taste and presentation is unmatched and you would never ever know by the flavor, you are drinking Old Forester 1920. After your first, you will want another. Secondly, ask how the drink is prepared and you will be amazed by the mile long list of prep work that goes into this cocktail. Furthermore, the drink is contained inside gorgeous china teacups and paired with a delicious apricot jam and shortbread cookie that is also made in-house.
My final drink of the night was the Remy Martin No.18 (pictured). Like its namesake would indicate, the Remy Martin cognac drink is a delightful and complex. The taste of the cognac, paired with the smell of the rosemary garnish changes over the life of the drink as the pleasant smelling smoke slowly dissipates as you drink the cocktail. This drink probably has the most showmanship of any on the menu and is highly recommended.
Conclusion:
Like all 3 bars the building, there is a deposit to be made while setting up reservations. However, this goes towards the price if all your drinks.
I would personally ask to sit at the bar or wait however long it takes for a spot to open up to be seated there. In my personal opinion the full experience really can not be obtained without bar seating.
The service is top notch and 90 minutes is more than enough time to order plenty of drinks whether you down the delicious cocktail quickly or sit, sip, and savor.
The Grey Hen RX was just the prescription I needed and turned a bad evening into a fantastic one. My wife and I plan on returning very soon.
