The Grey Market - Austin

I've been trying to get in for dinner at the Grey Market for months and finally an opportunity came up that they had availability and I had the night off. One of the best meals I've had in the 35 years I've been in Austin. The back story of the restaurant is laid out in her book, a great read or you can sit back a listen to her voice on the audio book. A great idea to past the time until you can get a slot to come eat. They do have breakfast and lunch service that is easy to nab a seat for.

Had breakfast here because we were staying at the hotel! Everything tastes great and make sure you try their grits and get a side of sausage. That combination is amazing.

Have ordered take out a couple of times from The Grey Market (TGM). I've had the curry chicken salad sandwich and roasted beet and feta sandwich from their Grab 'n' Go selections. Both sandwiches were tasty. Another time I ordered take out I had the TGM burger with roasted beets. Recently tried their farmer's salad and personal pecan pie. Good food.

Update: The Grey Market Austin was pretty good. We ordered the Hash & Eggs and the Weekend Fried Chicken. The hash was excellent, especially with the thin cut potatoes. The mac n cheese was great!! The fried chicken, however, wasn’t my favorite as it had an interesting marinade that I wasn’t a fan of. The thrill was also grapefruit which wasn’t the best. Still a huge fan of The Grey and The Diner Bar Austin. The Grey Market Austin is a great new addition to the food scene in Austin! Executive Chef and James Beard Award winner, Mashama Bailey, brings her great cuisines from her restaurant The Grey in Savannah to Austin. The Grey Market is has more of a casual diner feel and grab-n-go grocery than the sister restaurant The Diner Bar next door. I will be back here as I arrived closer to closing time. Congrats Chef Bailey on the 2022 James Beard award!! I’m going to brag a bit on Chef Bailey before I get back to The Grey Market. Mashama Bailey and her business partner Johno Morisano opened The Grey in 2014 in what was an old segregated Greyhound station. The restaurant has been extremely successful and the two owners wrote a book: Black, White, and The Grey. It is a phenomenal read about the journey of Mashama Bailey, a black chef finding her way as she explores her roots. She is also featured on the lastest episode of Chef's Table on Netflix. I’m looking forward to trying the Sunday Fried Chicken as well as the Fried Oyster Loaf (not my favorite name but it is an oyster po-boy). Also, you can’t leave without getting a Thrill from the freezer on your way out.

1st visit was 3/5/23 (Sun morn) had breakfast - ordered pancakes & the country breakfast. The biscuit on the country breakfast was huge & the pancakes were the best ever! 2nd visit 3/14/23 (Tues afternoon) - ordered biscuits & gravy & grabbed a parfait. Food is good - but is a bit pricey .... Pancakes $14, Biscuits & Gravy $14, cup of coffee $5, very small glass of milk $5 - small parfait (grab & go section) $8

Delicious food. The fried fish with grits and rouille was spectacular. I’d go back again just for this dish. And the greens. Do not miss out on the wedges. They are some of the best I’ve ever had. 5 stars for the food, though the service here suffers in comparison to next door at Diner Bar.

Absolutely LOVE this place. When first reading the menu it seems that the food will be basic diner food but geeshhh does it pack a punch. The chefs Angel and Milser can throw DOWN. The flavors are bomb. I recommend the fried fish and grits, country bacon, and the braised greens! The portions are large enough to have some to take home to go. Definitely one of my favorite breakfast spots in town. Julie has been my server each time I’ve visited and she will never steer you wrong!

charming casual restaurant that will satisfy the need for a delicious meal in a cute and cozy atmosphere. The space was bright and airy, with an air of a modern diner. A lot of thought and care into the design, and it made for a very inviting ambiance. As for the food, I ordered the Farmer's Salad and it was fantastic. The ingredients were fresh and flavorful, and the dressing was light and tangy. It was the perfect healthy option for lunch, or a breakfast. The staff were friendly and efficient, and seemed to really like their place of work. Grey market is recommended to anyone who wants to eat a fresh meal, served by people who have a genuine smile on their face 😊.

Sleek minimalist interior - old time diner meets modern industrial with a hipster feel. Common Breakfast items but a little pricey for basic - $14 for granola and yogurt parfait although tasty as it may be. Avo toast delish with lots of pickled onions but it fell apart immediately since it was pretty soggy bread. Really good cheesy grits, probably the best thing on the menu. Decent biscuit, kind of salty though, came as only 1 biscuit but it's huge and sharable. Decently fast for take out about 10 mins or do. Not that great for coffee - had better.

This wasca breakfast stop during my last day in Austin. I ordered a waffle, scrambled eggs with cream cheese, and potatoes. It was good and a welcomed start to the day. Service was the usual Southern hospitable. The restaurant looks like it could possibly pack out during the week and on Saturdays. I went on a Sunday morning and sat at the counter. Great experience and better food.

I love the ambiance - bright and fun. The quotes at the top make it even more awesome. Had the grits and honestly, they were so good. The service was great!

Our first time in Austin and we stayed at the Thompson Austin hotel. The Grey Market is their breakfast place and I wasn't sure if I wanted to try it or go to a different diner outside of the hotel. I have to say this place was delicious! I'm glad we tried it because we then had breakfast there for the next three mornings! The pancakes and eggs were fluffy, the bacon was crisped perfectly, and the hash browns were delicious too, even had some bite to it! Atmosphere is bright and friendly. You sit wherever you want. Highly recommend!

Visited Grey Market for breakfast and I really enjoyed the ambiance. Great windows let natural light in and the staff is incredibly welcoming upon entry. I ordered the hash and eggs and I love how finely shredded the hash was. Paired with the perfect sunny side up eggs this was a good breakfast. It always feels good to eat breakfast at a diner for some reason.

The Grey Market is attached to the Thompson and Tommie hotels. Fantastic breakfast diner - one of the best hotel daytime eateries (and city breakfast diners) I've seen. Sunny, bright disposition, warm friendly staff, and a great menu. Had the classic breakfast (choosing chicken sausage and cheesy grits) and the pancakes. Both were great, but the grits were maybe the best I've had ever, and I was raised on grits. Definitely worth it if you're a hotel guest or in the area.

Exactly what I was looking for! Visiting Austin and the Quiche Chilaquiles at The Grey Market was fresh, delicious and totally hit the spot! The Seasonal Fruit needs to include berries - not just melons. Great SERVICE, wonderful atmosphere! Can't wait to go back and grab one of the delicious looking sandwiches from the grab and go case!

Serious diner vibes in downtown? I really like the aesthetic they're going for. It's a small cozy space smack dab in downtown with a classic 60s style diner feel but clearly an Austin flair to it. Really awesome. The food is very good too. Mostly breakfast but don't overlook their lunch options. The fried chicken sandwich is one of the best in the city with super well seasoned juicy crisp chicken thigh, some good slaw to freshen it up and some Alabama white sauce for flavor. I like the Alabama white because it's an ode to bbq but I'm pretty sure no one else in the city does it either. The potato bun is my only detractor as it's a bit dense and not as soft as I would have liked but for those who like the heft will enjoy its heartiness. But let's not forget those wedge fries either. Best potato wedges ever. Fluffy and crispy, with a dipping sauce similar to a remoulade, definitely get!

First, as an owner of greyhounds, I had to stop in! Service and food were greyt and I hope o return someday!

Place is super clean, love Austin's take on a diner. Upscale drinks and artisan breads. A staff that is ridiculously upbeat and helpful. Menu is small, yet varied. Love that they decided to focus on quality Vs quantity. Kitchen could be a little faster it took about 15 minutes to prepare a Caesar salad with grilled snapper When it finally did arrive it was cooked to perfection and served with some of the most tasty croutons. Strongly recommend dropping in.

Nice spot for breakfast and lunch but a little pricey. Didn't get a chance to try the fried chicken but we really liked the cheesy grits and biscuit. Pro tip if you're staying at the Thompson or Tommie hotel this restaurant is attached to- the next door coffee bar's coffee is a little better.

Stopped by for a coffee, although sadly no decaf, so I landed on a chocolate pistachio croissant instead. Too bad, no?! For a girl with an insatiable sweet-tooth, this one hits the mark - think baklava (less honey) with finely ground pistachios amidst rich chocolate sandwiched between densely flaky croissant. Happy to have taken this to go, because it was messy and delicious for days to come. Next time I'm back for fish & grits, maybe an ice cream sandwich to share with a friend. Queenly Camilla was a delight!

The best biscuit I've ever had! And the chicken sausage patty also had a ton of flavor and was perfectly cooked (wasn't dried out or soaking in oil like a lot of bfast spots do to a sausage patty). They should seriously consider serving biscuits and gravy.

We all loved our breakfast!! Do yourself a big favor and order the chiliquiles quiche!! The tortilla chips are fresh/homemade and the quiche/cheese mixture is just the right consistency to dip your chips into......to die for yummy!! Service was great and coffee was strong!! Parking available nearby on the street or parking garages. Thanks y'all!!

I got the quiche chilaquiles and my friend got the eggs and hash. Both were yummy. The texture of the quiche wasn't correct but I assume it's cause they want it to be like eggs on chilaquiles? The taste of the quiche was so good though. Service was okay. Seemed like our server forgot about us or was in a daze. She disappeared for a while maybe on a break but this was at 9am ish so soon? I didn't get a coffee refill until we were leaving and it would have been nice to get it during the meal. This place has a diner feel and has cute sayings on a board. I'd like to come back for lunch and dessert.

A Star is Born I had a long day at the ATX TV Festival and needed something to eat for dinner. It was 6:00 PM and was already next to the new Thompson and Tommie hotels which share the same building. I entered the Thompson lobby and walked through the other restaurant there, Diner Bar, to enter the Grey Market. This place is looked really cool resembling a small market and eatery. I decided to give this place a try and sat at the counter ordering first a local craft beer. The menu had a lot of different items to choose from and selected the NYC. The menu said it was bacon, egg, cheese on a kaiser roll but had no expectation of what I was about to get. The staff was very friendly and talkative. I was gazed at the decor and products on display. Soon a plate was placed in front of me and wow what a shining moment. The NYC looked so pretty I had to take a lot of photos of it. Snap, snap, snap. The bun was powdery white with thick shooting bacon from four sides and melted cheese on egg oozing but stayed in put. I took one bite and wow it was fantastic, and was the best egg sandwich I ever had. I was still curious why it was called the NYC but didn't care because it tasted so delicious. I was even texting people about it. This hotline item filled me up nicely even though weird having brunch this late in the day. If this menu choice is this good then I can't imagine the rest of the selections, and the guy serving me said I should return on Sunday where Fried Chicken is the bomb. Sounds like a return is needed.

Austin breakfast diner. Lovely, attentive staff and manager(owner?). A bit pricey but everything is fresh. The fruit is super fresh; honey excellent; some of the best Greek yogurt I've had. The big deal seemed to be the grits. Homemade jam also a treat. Coffee is medium roast and not bitter. Fun to sit at the left end of the counter and watch the line cooks. They are amazing. Definitely recommend!

We had breakfast twice here during our stay at The Thompson. We quickly learned there are 2 ways to order: 1) If you want full service, make sure you get a seat at the diner bar, all faces the wall where the staffs work. The classic diner seatings 2) If you don't want full service, you can order at the register for all other seatings or togo order. Lots of quirky wordings at the top which provide some fun read while we wait for the food Tried a few breakfast items and they are all very fresh and tasty. My favorite must be the grits. It's a must try IMO They also used very good quality coffee beans! I had many cups in those 2 days!

Stopped in for breakfast on a quiet Sunday morning -early. Not a lot of patrons but while the staff was quite pleasant, service was quite slow. I had scrambled egg whites, potato hash, and a croissant. Egg whites were very well scrambled - very light and not in the least oily. Hash was delightful but a bit heavy. I don't know what I tasted in the hash but what I tasted was great! Croissants were fresh but - if this is possible - too buttery. Definitely a good spot for a quick bite to eat.

Tried this spot while staying at The Thompson. Great vibes for breakfast. The NYC was delicious! Excellent coffee as well. And I am from New York. :)

My family and I went for breakfast and the food was amazing! It's a little pricey for breakfast but well worth it! The staff was also great and provided great service.

Excellent service and great menu options that were easily labeled for allergies! Everything was freshly made and the inside was neat.

Stayed at The Tommie while visiting Austin. Stopped in a few times to grab the grab and go food! Husband loved the turkey sub. It was pricey but it was very convenient. We ordered room service from Grey's. They had a QR sticker in our room, which took you to quick order and you have it delivered to your room. We order breakfast, while the coffee, breakfast sandwich and OJ was good... I ordered the omelet with hash. When it arrived it looked nothing like picture, had different ingredients with omelet, didn't have the hash that was in photo. I called down and the lady asked what they could do to accommodate? I said to send what I ordered... she said thats the omelet and do you want me to send hash? I said I guess. The hash came, it was delicious. The omelet was not very good though. I wish i would have taken a photo but after waiting 50 mins, I was getting hangry. The omelet in picture has peppers, onions, mushrooms, and sour cream. I got an egg white omelet with caramelized onions and mushrooms. I would probably just order in person and ask about ingredients, because apparently they just cook whatever they want.

Very cute market, the décor is just calling for you to come in and check out the beautiful ambiance. That being said, it is a very pricey market. I just needed to quench my thirst, but decided I would pass after seeing the prices. I did enjoy looking at their selection, but it was definitely marketed to a high price point, which I found funny since I'm from the Bay Area and everything is overpriced there too.

We had the opportunity to try this place out on the 4th day they opened. While they haven't gotten everything up and running yet (only drip coffee for now), the food was fantastic. As a true southerner, I judge southern cooking by their grits. These were thick and buttery. Everything tasted great and the staff is super friendly.

I was excited to try this place for lunch as I read some great reviews from previous diners. Unfortunately I was underwhelmed for the majority of the meal. When we arrived the seats we sat in were dirty with crumbs all over and there was no silverware. We ordered the chicken sandwich and it was rather flavorless and small for $19. Honestly would've taken a chic-fil-a sandwich over this for half the price. It was almost impossible to get any service the entire time. No silverware, water refills, and even getting a to go box for the potato wedges proved to be challenging. With the large food scene in ATX, I have to say I most likely won't be back.

The food was great. You gotta try the pancakes, they will delight your taste buds! The service was fast and friendly and I felt like I had stepped back in time to an old diner with upscale food.

Food was amazing, I got the hash and eggs for breakfast and it was a bit spice for me for breakfast but I couldn't put the fork down. Check out the wall above the counter for some great quotes. Points if you know the movie for the one pictures

I was super excited after all the buzz they got in Savannah, GA. But then I went for breakfast and it was pretty over-priced and greasy with a very limited menu and limited seating. Also slow service.

Food and service are nice but their hours never match when they are really open. We have gone here multiple times and they are closed when their hours posted online on their website say otherwise.

Got a much needed cold brew here. The staff were really helpful. It's a cute place with a diner and mini neighborhood store feel.

Few minutes to wait BUT it was worth the wait. So excited and happy enjoyed till the end, great service 100% friendly answered all questions we had..!!!! Definitely looking forward for next visit soon...!!!!

the service was amazing our waiter was so nice and kind and out came out super quickly. THE PANACKES WERE PHENOMENA. my friends had the avacado toast and said it was so good !!

To be able to stumble into the first place I could find outside my hotel and find the best rush lunch hit-the-foodie-spot salad means I'm in Austin, baby! The spice to fresh, to squish to crunch to perfect-protein and flavor ratio was perf. I love a good bite-able salad but the delicate authentic fresh cut strips of fried chicken over the perfectly vinigaretted arugula, squash, farro and hybrid-hummus made my day.

Staying in the Thompson hotel it's a convenient location to get breakfast. Between that and the eggs being perfectly cooked is how it achieved the 3 star rating I awarded them. Place wasn't that busy and was passed up several times before even being asked for a drink order. I decided on the low country breakfast, all though $17 it wasn't bad as far as quantity of food goes. Quality was another deal all together. I ordered both pork sausage and bacon. The additional pork sausage was $6 and had enough salt on it to cure an entire pig. The biscuit could have been shot out of an catapult, being hard as a rock! I ordered coffee and orange juice, both small 8-10 oz glasses.... $5 each lol. High priced for Folgers! Breakfast wasn't bad but for a $35.72 tab for one and no Bloody Mary's I'd pass. I have zero problem's paying for quality food, even though it was just breakfast for that price it should have been a better experience.

What a delightful place to get breakfast. It's only been open for three months or so, but this is set to be a true gem in Austin because of its great food and super friendly and attentive service. Open early, at 7 a.m., and a short walk from the Driskill and Stephen F. Austin Hotels, it's a perfect spot for a great breakfast for business travelers and visitors to the city. It has a modern diner vibe with countertop seating. Food was excellent and featured one of the best homemade biscuits and jam I've had in a long while. My fruit substitution was better than any fruit bowl you normally get at a breakfast eatery -- no tasteless melon chunks to be seen in this beautiful bowl of berries. My only regret is that I only found this place on the last day of my weeklong stay in Austin. But I'll definitely be back.

So so good! The food and the atmosphere! Enjoyed hanging out here for a few hours while I was in Austin. A great staff, and great drinks. I had an issue with my order, and they took great care of me. The biscuits were amazing, and the seasonal jam was to die for! Definitely stop here when in Austin!

In Austin for a convention and stumbled on this diner of deliciousness. Super clean and modern with some awesome wine choices. Three of us split the Sunday fried chicken dinner. The chicken was crispy, hot and juicy perfection. The white bread was interesting and reminded me of wonder bread from the 70's. Thick, light, and sweet. The bread and butter pickles were a nice sweet/salty addition. We shared the fish, grits and greens. Greens were cooked perfectly- not mushy, not firm. The grits were creamy and the breading on the fish crispy and a little spicy. We sat at the counter and enjoyed interacting with the friendly staff and watching the cook put the dishes together. Service was fast. We were able to eat in under an hour, but it would have been nice to linger over a glass of wine. The food was so good, one of us plans to go back tonight for more fish and grits.

Went there for lunch and have nothing but positive things to say! The restaurant itself is cute and very clean, the staff is kind and attentive, and the food is DELISH. I had the cheeseburger and it tasted like a fresher version of the classic burger. So confused as to why there weren't more people there, I will be going back!

Great breakfast this morning. All fresh ingredients and fresh baked bread. So sparkling and clean inside. Staff is super friendly and very accommodating.

Awful breakfast- slow inattentive service, burnt my husbands coffee and never brought mine. Got my order wrong even though it was only eggs and toast- they brought eggs and bacon and forgot the toast. Just don't go here for breakfast.

Very underwhelming breakfast options. The "chilaquiles" are just a quiche with tortilla chips and a tomato on top for $15. The service was fine but a little confusing. They want you to order first and then sit but you're standing in line with no menu posted until you get to the register to order.

Firstly nobody greeted us when we walked In and we stood at the counter waiting for someone to take our order for 10 minutes. When someone finally came they told us they had the wrong menu out and breakfast was already over, giving us an entirely new menu for lunch. My bf got the fried chicken and it says "choice of side" on the menu so he got the side salad. The lady charged him for it and when asked she said the chicken doesn't come with a side so he requested to remove it...she still charged him for it... When the food came out, the hot dog was just a weenie on white bread? The side salad was the saddest salad ever, and the chicken tasted like they started making grilled chicken and then realized they were supposed to fry it. Even the water tasted dirty. Trash all around lol. Not sure how this place is still open

I am very familiar with The Grey in Savannah so I was excited when I found out that the James Beard wining duo of Mashama Bailey and John Morisano would be opening restaurants in Austin inside The Thompson no less, I was salivating. However, the customer service or rather the lack there of was not what I was expecting. My girlfriend and I snagged seating at the counter but the delivery lacked luster. First and foremost, we were offered water, but not asked if we wanted anything else, nor were we presented with drink menus, only a food menu that served as our place mat. Second, I asked about specialty coffees to which I was told they do not have anything besides basic coffee, so then I asked for a mimosa, and was presented with 2 small glasses with one containing my grapefruit juice and the other containing my sparking wine. I have no idea why it was not presented to me already mixed, but I did not request my drink to be separated. Third, we just felt like everyone just stood around more or less and waited for you to get their attention as they were not checking up on patrons. At any rate, we ordered the fruit plate along with the chicken sausage hash and a side of cheesy grits and the presentation and taste were equally pleasing. If you are on the go and need to grab a quick bite, they have healthy offerings in the cooler as well as fresh baked goods on the counter display.

This cute market is so fun - diner vibes (but updated and fun). Friendly staff. We got takeout breakfast and it was all delicious. Bonus - I love supporting a female owned business.

Underwhelming and over-priced. Had the $20 half chicken (no sides) and added a side of potato salad. Chicken was under seasoned (added salt and hot sauce) and the potato salad was super basic and lacked flavor, and was taken out of grab and go (it was listed as grab and go). If you're into $14 mini chicken pot pies and $6 pastries, this is your spot, but as someone who works downtown and so excited about a new place, it was very disappointing. I wish them well but I don't see this place staying open long.

I love the grab and go food so much. Everything is so fresh and tasty. I do have to say though, there was a turkey provolone sandwich that they used to have and it was AMAZING. My top 3 sandwiches i e had in Austin. The bread is made in house, the way the oils and lettuce and tomato worked together with the main ingredients was magical. Now they have an italian sandwich, which is good but no where near as good as the turkey provolone. I'd love to see this produce come back!! Love you guys!!

The Farmer's salad is magical. Not sure what is underneath all that delicious arugula and squash (hummus? Tahini?)but combined with the dressing and farro, it was out of this world!
