On the Grid : The Griffin

"The layout of the place is great, with brick arches, fireplaces and hanging lanterns complementing the medieval décor. Once in awhile you may find yourself surrounded by first tinder dates, but if that’s kinda night grab a drink and get eavesdropping—you’ll have a blast. The smoking patio is a nice value-add for all you smokers out there and they have a decent full tavern menu. The service/bartenders are sometimes hit and miss, but you can always find parking and a table so it’s a great place for happy hour with friends." - Brains on Fire

Pretty good for drinks with a small group. Could use some soft table lights. And the jukebox might be broken because we could only get it to play one requested song.

Google
This bar has the most incredible dark and moody atmosphere. Perfect change of pace from the rest of Fremont when you just need to hangout somewhere without LEDS flashing in your eyes. Happy hour prices and deals are great value for downtown, the service is always fantastic even in the busiest nights. Themed nights can get very busy, but there’s usually a good variety of acts/genres throughout the week.

Google
The music was awful on a Saturday night. I’m literally shocked how bad the DJ was.. we definitely would’ve stayed longer and got ordered more drinks. It’ all about the ambience. and the bathroom is terrible

Google
I love the vibes here! The staff is friendly and there are some really fun events. The drinks are priced as they are downtown, but the atmosphere is incomparable. I appreciate the lighting being low, but how everything is still easily visible. The back room is tucked away, and the sound is good yet contained.

Google
You can't tell from the outside, but this place is really chill. With two fire pits, good music, and not too load to talk.

Google
Recommended by the bartender from Atomic Liquors, this place was great. The interior reminded us of the galley of a ship, or castle. It has a huge bar that runs the length of one side. Manned by knowledgeable bartenders who know how to mix a drink, this place stands out on Fremont. The bouncer was hilarious! A man who truly must love his job. That set a great vibe to the visit.

Google
This place has a really cool vibe - though we waited a bit on opening, I hold no grudges, though (as I have my own personal timing on most days) 😆 . Jess greeted and quickly us served - GREAT happy hour specials!!

Google
I just love this bar. This is that place that feels like home, and you can't quite figure out why. The fire pit's in the main room make the dungeonesque theme warm and inviting. The Griffin has been around for a long time, and it feels that way, it's solid and established. If you want a dive bar, that has stood the test of time, while all the fad places around it have come and gone several times, this is your spot.

Yelp
What a fun, cool and affordable stop if you're on Fremont street. The place inside feels like Hogwarts with its stone ceiling and wooden seating. The temp is nice inside, even on a hot summer evening and they have fires lit in the indoor fire pits! Drinks are affordable and delicious. So good for a stop in!
google avatar

Shar S.

Yelp
A nice, chill place to have a drink on a Tuesday night. Their drinks are decently priced, too! The bartender was friendly and took her time finding out what I liked before making my drink. Great service!

Yelp
EXCEPTIONAL Like stepping into another reality in this town of prefab establishments. I cannot understate the amazingness of this place, make it your destination to spend an evening here you will never forget it.

Yelp
It's wild to me that the room to host live performances in only holds like 50 people tops without being crammed to the gills . I'd have not purchased tickets if I'd have known . Didn't check out any of the drinks or the food but I will say that the vibe is cool outside of the performance room .

Yelp
We moved here from L.A. a few months ago. Someone recommended we check out this bar. Great recommendation! The bar has a great feel and Eddie, the bartender, made us newbies feel right at home. We will return.

Yelp
I don't know what's up with their bouncers but wow, they've got an ego that needs to be checked. The big dude just silently nodded or shook his head and it wouldn't have been such a big deal if the louder one hadn't tried to make a big scene of things. Clearly they're unfamiliar with Texas IDs as they kept calling my friend's ID fake and threatened to cut it up before trying to trick her into handing it back to them. We waited for our friends who were already inside to come back out cause of the 7 of us, we weren't leaving behind the 1, especially when the bouncers are being such jerks and having their drunk friends join in on harassing us. On other nights, it'll be better but til they get better security that can actually spot fakes and not get off on harassing people, you can literally pick anywhere else on the street.

Yelp
Actually Super sad. came a long way to check out this place.. we own a place with the same name ... it was recommended by a friend states away. One bad apple bartender just lost lots of merchant sales along with second and 3rd rounds for a group of 10. To the long dark haird bartender you are the most entitled little rude bartender in vegas...sorry we made the trip, you ruined the whole experience!!!

Yelp
Came during Halloween 2023. First time I visited I didn't realize they have two rooms available. This time I was pleasantly surprised. At the door they check ID's then you walk inside and are in the main bar area. Plenty of booths and fire pits to sit or stroll up to the bar and find a seat there. Continue to walk past the bar and you'll go down a short hallway where the restrooms are located and eventually enter the back room which had a live DJ, dance floor and another smaller bar area-AMAZING. Atmosphere is definitely true to a dive bar and an overall chill place to hang with some locals and tourist.

Frank G.

Yelp
This place is legit!!! Cool vibes and chill atmosphere. Will definitely make this a come back spot when I visit. Must try

Yelp
The Griffin was a good mix of ages surrounded by places meant for those just barely of age. The music was good. The service was adequate. Not the friendliest but there's worse out there for sure. The bathroom was in need of attention. Overall we had a nice time hanging out.

Yelp
Once upon a time a local- who loved coming here. The smell of cigars and that old musty stale smell still lingering. Love this place!!!!! Now if you don't like smoking steer clear. It can get pretty Smokey in here the later the night goes. Great spot at the end of the Fremont street experience- even with plenty of other places around this spot stays busy. They have an awesome back room where they play music- and have a small bar. As well as a great room, with lots of seating and tables. Can't forget the fireplaces. Setting the ambiance. lol Just a great place to chill sit and drink. Music is always great- vibe it awesome! Great for all ages. Drinks are reasonable and easy to get. Not a long wait. Bar staff is exceptional!!! Love this place!!!!
google avatar

Antoinette O.

Yelp
Got free entry cuz I met a cool dj down the way. It was so dark inside. Too dark can't see. Music wasn't great. Wouldn't recommend if you're trying to dance and have a good time. Vibes were off in here. The people were a little..weird and odd

Yelp
Cool dive bar as locals we haven't made time to come downtown but we decided to have a few drinks and we stopped at the griffin first. We ordered a Long Island and a mule de pomme and the mule was actually pretty tasty now the long island its become a thing we order one every new bar we try and I will probably say this one has to be at our bottom favorites wasn't as tasty as the mule. The place itself coming in is pretty dark but cool place is your not a smoker or ok with smelling smoke probably not the place for you its small and they sell cigars .They are pretty good at keeping up this place even though dark looks pretty clean .Going towards the back they have another bar and a dance floor area the music was oldies but fun crowd we ran into. Thanks for a great first visit !

Yelp
Always love coming here! Great atmosphere and bartenders. Great place to stop for a drink while bar hopping Fremont.

Yelp
I love the Griffin's over all atmosphere. I've been to a few metal shows here and even though its small the intimacy still remains even during a Meral show. Ony issue I would love to see chagned is the sound. Needs better acoustic design and/or equipment. I would "GO Fund" for this place for sure!!!
google avatar

Morgan B.

Yelp
Their drinks are fantastic. Their staff is wonderful. I highly recommend going to this bar during their happy hour from 4-6. They have a juke box, a band that stars a little later, and a dance floor. They even have an odd vending machine with essentials and not so essential items.
google avatar

Koryn G.

Yelp
It was busy when I got there late at night with a friend but not surprised since it was a Saturday. Got a margarita & found some seats after searching for a few minutes. Pretty dark inside so hard to get pictures. Service was good. Would definitely like to try going back sometime!
google avatar

Jewelle N.

Yelp
Came in on a Tuesday night. They had a jazz band playing which is lovely. BUT it was so loud I couldn't hear my partner or the bartender. Don't get me wrong, the musicians were great, but I struggled to hear anything and really would have stayed longer if they were just a bit quieter. Amber was my bartender and she was awesome! So funny and very attentive.
google avatar

Lisa R.

Yelp
One of our go tos in Vegas!!! Dark and dank with great cocktails and great beer selection! Can't wait to go back!!
google avatar

Gabby G.

Yelp
Such a fun energy! Definitely more dim lighting but so fun and calm. Amber was our bartender she was awesome!
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Pretty dark lighting so the fire is a spot to be if you need some light. The atmosphere has an almost emo and goth vibe with its music selection and atmosphere. The place is way different than the rest of downtown/old Vegas which is upbeat and full of lights so might be a nice change of pace if needed. There was no live music the night I went.

Yelp
We usually love this bar. But we were there Sunday evening and Amber was "wasted" her words. Yelling and screaming at me and lots of dog other customers simple just trying to order drinks. Then she over charged us, we called her out of it. She fixed it then told us not to come back. Many customers and staff saw this. It was embarrassing for the bar. We will be sure to make sure she's not working the night if we ever decide to return.

Yelp
Really wanted to like this place but every time it's not the vibe I legit tried to give a bartender someones missing belongings and she replied "what am I supposed to do with that" i couldn't believe it. I found the owner of the item myself. Just awful. You know what you were supposed to do, babe? You were supposed to take it and help me find its owner. Hope you don't lose your phone and panic. Don't worry tho the feelings mutual - you're awful. 4 out of 4 times it's been a miss and as someone who used to bartend in NYC for 10 years - the bar is gorgeous, but do better,

Yelp
Love this dive bar close to old town Las Vegas. We make a point of coming every time. Lately it has been getting or popular. This time we atually had to wait in line... yikes. VERY DARK. Smoky. Its decor is Dive bar 101. They have an entertaining vending machine in there. Jukebox has fun things. Drinks are strong and not expensive. Cool shirts to bring home. Be sure to LOOK at the pics on the shirts some are not for kids eyes... Bathroom has someone taking care of it to keep it clean. Bartenders are all friendly and hip. Lots of tattoos. Bouncer carded me lol, I could be his mom. Bonus points for making googly eyes at my ID. NOT full of weed smoke that is a bonus here in Vegas. This is one of my go to Vegas bars. Love it!
google avatar

Tara O.

Yelp
Ambiance great, only went to back bar, bartender was cool, they made it so there was a decent sized dance floor! And the DJ Karma Presents they hired played what they promised.

A. C.

Yelp
So here's the deal. If you want a decent dive bar vibe that has a fair amount of seating for the overall space, but not enough to handle the Fremont street crowds on weekends and not enough to dance on dance event nights; hit the Griffin. Because of its location it's going to make money. Because it's going to make money no matter what they do to the place, you can expect that service is going to be hit and miss and the pricing is going to be touristy. Front room is overwhelmed by a bunch of fireplace seating and benches. Back room is too small to really host a good dance night and smoking is allowed. Yet the place is packed most weekends with both kinds of events. Place won't fail unless ownership is stupid and they're not. The main draw of this place for me is their Gothica dance night on Saturdays. I'd be there more often if it didn't run in conflict with other similar events in town OR the back room it runs in wasn't small. Front room bands are generally shit for what you can find in Vegas. If you want to get a good idea of what a "good" dive bar is in Vegas and like Goth/Industrial music, hit up the Griffin next time you're on Fremont on a Saturday night. Venue has a lot of flaws but you'll have a good time.

Yelp
Popped in to check it out and have a drink. Nice and dark. Cavernous. Good hang out. I'd go back. Bartender across the street said it was his favorite bar in Vegas.

Yelp
Tried this place a couple a years ago and had been wanting to come back. We got an old fashioned and Mai tai. The old fashioned was literally water (see pic). No bitters, sugar cube, or cherry, and it was chilled on ice?! The bartender was a woman with a Tattoo on her temple that was outspokenly negative. She kept saying eff this place, these old a$$ oranges, what a effing mess. Our last time we ordered an old fashioned that was made the right way and even had it with smoked mesquite/some type of wood. Would not recommend this place, even the restroom was dirty, and had no toilet paper.

Yelp
After living in Vegas almost three years, I finally made it here. I wish I would have discovered this place sooner! When you walk in you almost feel like your in an ancient castle or dungeon. The walls are arched and made of stone and there are several fire pits burning throughout the room. If wait around until a certain hour into the night, the door by the bathrooms opens up to a speakeasy. The speakeasy has a DJ, Bar, plays videos on several screens, and is a blast!
google avatar

PJ S.

Yelp
Its a Hipster-rustic cocktail bar in downtown Vegas. The ambiance is cool - dark with comfortable lounge seating amidst candlelight. The crowd is pretty eclectic but its a mix of local hipsters and tourists of all ages. No kitchen. The drink menu features some craft cocktails which are legit. But here's my one gripe: if you're going to serve up $14 cocktails you really need to get them in the correct barware. My drink was served in a beer pint glass which is fine if you're getting a long-island iced tea at Dino's....but high end cocktails need to be served in the right glass. Still, its a cool place. Nice little getaway from the circus outside.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
If you like your drinks strong, dress like a missing member of the GooGoo Dolls, and like loud rock, this is your place. I like two of those things but had a great time in this rock joint. Drinks here are poured pretty strong and somewhat resembled what you ordered. That may be just poor bartending or the whole "I don't give a F" attitude this place has. You decide......
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
Amber was absolutely amazing. She made sure my friend and I were comfortable and made us the best drinks. We had a great time.
google avatar

Yelp
Get out of the LV heat in this cool spot, literally! Walking into the dark and super chill Griffin is daunting at first, but take a seat, your eyes will adjust! You'll notice the Old world vibe- fireplaces roaring, brick and wood ceilings with a nice long wooden bar top. The Griffin definitely takes you away from craziness of Fremont street for sure! Friendly bartenders, ice cold beer plus well and speciality drinks. The owner makes the featured bourbon on the drink list, just ask for a taste! We heard a mix of music 70's, 80's & 90's on Saturday around 7pm. Bring your ID EVERYONE is carded at the door! No cover, clean restrooms!

Damon B.

Yelp
Was a very nice experience, and the bar area is very nicely cooled with air conditioning. The service was great, and drinks are wonderful. The bartender Amber was very kind and generous in making sure that the people in the bar weren't dehydrated and very thoughtful towards others.
google avatar

Yelp
This is probably the best dive bar in vegas. As someone who frequents dive bars, I have been a bit disappointed to find that every bar in Vegas has slot machines which makes it smell like smoke. Well, luckily the Griffin has no such machines and only a juke box with lots of rock, a nice dark bar area with fireplaces, and room in the back past the bathroom which doubles as a small club like dancing area. It's really the perfect place for me to bring my friends who either grungy, or want that club experience without paying. One of the coolest things is that they have really unique beers including the terrible olympia beer that a girl once made me try in olympia, but jack and jameson is only about $6 or $7 which is a fair price for something on Fremont. Its dark enough to look dirty, but nothing actually is dirty which is cool. It also doesn't hurt that its in the local area of Las Vegas and near the Fremont experience.

Yelp
Walked past this place on Fremont and I was intrigued because unlike some of the other bars in the area, I wasn't able to see inside and so I decided to go in and I'm glad I did. They had 80s music playing when i walked in, but throughout the night they played a mix of 80s and 90s so I was really enjoying the vibe. There were plenty of seating area, or you could sit around the fireplaces to keep warm. Although the place was packed, the bartenders were quick to take my drink orders. They have your typical liquor and they have a few cocktails on the menu along with some scotch if you're into that. I tried their 'smoked old fashioned' where they would burn a piece of wood and then put a glass upside down over the smoke before pouring in the old fashion. However, it tasted just like regular old fashion to me. So, meh. I ended up drinking my typical Crown on the rocks the rest of my night. If you walk toward the back past the restrooms, there's a separate room where they had a DJ playing EDM. I'm not too into EDM so I didn't really care for it. But if you're into EDM, then you should know that you can come here for that. No cover charge. Good music. Good vibe. Good bartenders. Reasonable prices (for Vegas standards - I'm from Texas where prices are MUCH lower). Wouldn't mind coming back.

Yelp
Cool little dive bar especially during the winter season. My wife and I stopped here for about an hour to have a couple drinks for my birthday. This place has indoor fire pits with seating directly in front which makes for a nice cozy place to have a drink on a cold day! We played a few songs on the jukebox and sipped on a couple of old fashions.
google avatar

Becky B.

Yelp
This place is seriously so cool. If you are any type of "spooky"...you'll love this place. The entire design makes you feel like you've stepped into another time/realm. And then there's a vending machine with random stuff in it...like whaatt!? So cool! 10/10 recommend!
google avatar

Dan B.

Yelp
Amber the bartender was attentive, sensitive, positive, and fucking easy on the eyes.. Her recommendations were spit on and she has an image ability to read a person; she created an experience for each person in our group. Deciding to come here after church was the best idea! Love her new additions. Hot! Has beautiful tots but won't show us. Has the biggest tits i want to see them. She was a great bartender. The griffin, i got lost in the eyes of Amber. Not only the best bartender I've ever had, but my goddddd. The attention that girl can keep.. praise Jesus for bartenders
google avatar

Mikey H.

Yelp
I have walked by here numerous times. Since I couldn't get my Therapy session across the street, we came here. My first time in and I think it was good that it was Christmas Day, not very crowded. The friendly bartender gave us some time, and opted for the smoked old fashion. I like the prep! It reminded me of Bar Leather Apron in Hawaii. I even showed the bartender a video of their smokey version. I like the music playing, the ambiance, and I'm sure it gets really crowded on a weekend night. Overall, a great first visit! I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Slow down at The Griffin after walking through Fremont. Cozy vibes & good beer. If you get to sit around the indoor fire pits (enclosed), it'll elevate your experience! Friendly bouncer, friendly bartenders.

Jada C.

Yelp
Horrible bouncer denied entry and took my Real ID. "It looks like shit" no actual reasoning. On a real power trip. Did not know the proper non-emergent police number or where the police department on Fremont was. Once the police came to confirm it was my real ID he was very dismissive towards my group. Did previously love this bar but will not be returning.

Madison G.

Yelp
Amber went above and beyond! She was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. Will definitely come back again and recommend to others!
google avatar

Nick B.

Yelp
Great drinks, great service, and it's like you're drinking in an old English hall with better music. So that's pretty dope. Bartenders have always been cool and kind to me, and I really like this bar.
google avatar

Alexx R.

Yelp
Being from Vegas everyone always asks me "where do the locals go when they go out"? More times that not I mention Downtown & The Griffin. I've been a customer at The Griff for over 10 years now and to this day it is my go to bar. Don't quote me but I'm pretty sure this is one of last bars that does not charge a cover to get in. (Let's be real local Vegas people don't like to pay covers) I love the dark Harry Potter vibes and the music isn't your usual Top 40 that most bars play. Oh and if the back room is open then go to the back and have a sweaty dance party with your friends.
google avatar

Karen R.

Yelp
Lounge bar. Fast free service. Good music with good service. Plenty of room to sit. Clean bathrooms. Love this place. Good beer selection.
google avatar

Rick C.

Yelp
Love this spot from the dark room bar, to the front doormen, bartenders then the back door opens to the club part on Friday nights the deejay plays mostly 80's music and boy does she play it well yea you could Goto those high priced night club but the griffin is a place you can let your hair down and party your ass off in the backroom or just stay in the front bar and enjoy a few drinks in the intimate bar area with cool background music playing

Brandy H.

Yelp
The Griffin should really fix their outside sign if they want people to find the place. Lights been out for a while.
google avatar

Courtney M.

Yelp
This place has a fun vibe. They have a lounge area in the front with fireplaces and lots of seating and tables. Plus a decent size dance area in the back. Different types of music in both areas. This is a great concept so everyone is happy. We ordered an Adios, and a shot of Silver. The whole vibe was really chill. Prices were reasonable Even their restroom attendant was on point. I think people forget they work for tips. Js Location is Las Vegad Blvd / Freemont - parking is either street, garages, or lots.
