Austin Mexican Restaurant Carnitas El Guero Is Opening in North Austin - Eater Austin

"Very great Austin Michoacan-style restaurant mini-chain Carnitas el Guero is opening its sixth Austin-area location this year. The new restaurant will be found at 2309 West Parmer Lane in North Austin opening sometime in September. The restaurant serves Michoacan-style carnitas (braised shredded pork) served in tacos and tortas, plus there are quesadillas, gorditas, and tostadas with other meats, as well as caldos. There are also single locations in San Antonio and Mexico City. Owner and chef Gustavo Reyes started the restaurant in 2016." - Nadia Chaudhury

The place is in an old house of Parmer but don’t let it fool you. The food is solid. The cost is normal for a post inflation times but the portions and flavor make it a deal. I ordered the steak and pork tacos on corn tortillas. First the steak was solid and is a good choice if you’re craving beef. I think the pork tacos were the highlight for me though. They were slightly fatty in a good way, with a bit of crispy texture. It had good marinade and seasoning. Lastly I need to praise the corn tortilla. I’m usually no fan since most places make it dry, brittle and tasteless but it was soft moist and flavorful. I can honestly say it’s the best I have had in years. They also give you a red and green salsa. I’m all team green but red is good too. The staff is friendly and nice and have great recommendations if you don’t know what you may like. I plan to come back and try the other things.

What an amazing spot! The ingredients were incredibly fresh and high quality — you can really taste the difference. The ribeye tacos with bone marrow and chicharrón were out of this world — rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. The homemade corn tortillas were fresh and had that perfect texture. Don’t skip the aguas frescas either — super refreshing and a great complement to the meal. Everything tasted authentically Mexican and made with care. The staff was attentive, friendly, and made sure everything was perfect. Highly recommend for anyone who appreciates great food and excellent service. Absolutely loved our experience here. Can’t wait to come back!

Google
The BEST authentic Mexican food around! Everything is $20 and under and made in house. You can tell the owner puts his heart into this place and provided top notch customer service. Coming from a person who’s mom made nothing BUT authentic Mexican food growing up I was a kid in a candy store having my moms food right at my finger tips! Where else can you get a 5 street taco plate with beans and rice under $20 in Austin?! And the cucumber-lemon- Pineapple agua Fresca was really refreshing! Will definitely be coming back and recommending to everyone I know 🤩

I was so hungry and this wonderful place hit the spot. I dug in before I even thought to take a picture, but it was really tasty and very hearty. I would happily eat here again. Plus, it's a family business and they were very kind to us. Support your local businesses and come grab lunch here! They have a solid menu and so many choices for agua fresca. I had the pineapple and cucumber and it was legit.

The Grill Eria is a cozy and authentic Mexican restaurant. The indoor space is warm and inviting, though not overly fancy, creating a comfortable atmosphere. I noticed a backyard area but wasn’t sure if dining was available there. I ordered the Taco Matamoros, which includes five tacos with a choice of two different proteins—I chose chicken tinga and beef. I also tried the chilaquiles, made with their homemade chips, salsa, refried beans, and a choice of protein. The food was delicious, and the staff was friendly and attentive.

Usually love the food, the owners are nice and the place is clean. Unfortunately, the meat seems like it’s getting worse in quality or there is no one checking the meat before serving. I had a torta that was 50% fat and gristle. After removing all the fat, I had less than half the meat. The oil had soaked into the bread and gotten all over my hands. Usually their tortas are better. The image is of all the fat and gristle in my torta. The pork tasted very stale as well in our enchiladas.

This place is AMAZING! Our first time here and will definitely not be our last! Super friendly staff, very accommodating (we had our 14 month old with us) and everything we had was DELICIOUS! Get the loaded molletes and some agua frescas! 🤩

Google
I had the ribeye tacos delicious, tender, and big portions. It comes with guacamole, grilled onions, and bone marrow. The price is on point for all that you get and you can tell that they take pride in their ingredients. I think they can do a better job of letting people know they are open, I was pretty much the only person there at dinner time on a Saturday so I hope they don't close.

Yelp
Easily the best torta I've had in a long time and the other food looked pretty solid from a distance. I'll be back to check out other items. They were also very welcoming when I walked in.

Yelp
I was looking forward to trying this place but was super disappointed. I only tried one menu item so I don't know if this reflects on the other items offered. I ordered a carnitas Gordita for $15. Tipped $2 on my to-go order. Wish u had not. The Gordita was HUGE which would have been great if it was tasty. It was far from tasty, lacked salt and was watery. The bottom of the Gordita was soggy by the time I got back to work. I ate a few bites (maybe 25% of it?) and threw the rest away. I probably won't go back.

Yelp
Best Breakfast in Texas! Ribeye tacos. My dog loves the bone and marrow. Priceless home cooking!

Monique C.

Yelp
Love this home cooking so much, we have a standing weekly breakfast order! Their burgers are juicy & delicious as well as their traditional entrees. Everything made with love - everything is super tasty.

Yelp
Small little place but good authentic Mexican food. I had pozole and al pastor and barbacoa tacos. Barbacoa tacos were a little greasy and heavy but the pozole was on point and they give you a perfect portion- pretty big. Michelada was good. Service is good too. You order at the register pay and then you sit and wait. The music volume was pretty reasonable and not too loud. Overall, the place is clean.

Yelp
Tasty authentic interior Mexican food made with quality ingredients. A great find. It's my first visit. I had a quesadilla and a carnitas taco for lunch. It was so good, I bought a pound home for dinner. Recommended!

Yelp
The taste of the food was great. Great flavor and great portions. It would get a 5 star if just based on the food itself. The pricing is what gets me, even for the area it's high. Service was fast and nice, and it wouldn't be a problem to get in and out for lunch. The eating area is small and quaint, and you'll get no complaints from me. Because of the pricing I would probably not go back, but I still wanted to review it because the food was good.

Yelp
Food is really good! Love the tacos and quesadilla-you can pick the protein of your choice. Place is very small but feels very comfy. The portions are kind of small too (I got this as dinner) but it would be great for breakfast/lunch. The worker there was friendly and was able to make some suggestions on the menu.

Yelp
My sister recommended this place and raved about the Caldo de Res (Puchero). I was disappointed when I went to the establishment and was told they were not serving it that day. I ordered the pozole instead. This dish is served with crispy chalupas so request tortillas if that's what you prefer. I requested corn tortillas. The prices are pretty steep. The pozole was BIG and flavorful. I like my pozole served with a lot of cabbage and sliced radishes. At Grill-Eria it was served with lettuce and radishes which was disappointing and unexpected. My friends ordered tacos and seemed to enjoy them. While the food was good overall, the prices were a tad steep. I would still go back to try the Puchero my sister raved about.

Yelp
My husband and I love the tacos and soups, as well as the pineapple lemonade and have become regulars at this place. The staff is very friendly and attentive, always suggesting new dishes for us to try. They still seem to be working on their interior and backyard - We can't wait for summer to return so we can try bringing a group of friends and sitting outside.

Yelp
As usual, tacos are really good. We got carnitas and barbacoa. We also got their tamales this time, they are moist and pretty generous with their fillings. We also met one of the owners and he was very nice. He mentioned that they'll be adding more upgrades and menu items later this month. Ambiance was nice and quiet when we went.

Yelp
Just got back here and o had to try other things. The Ribeye tacos are a showstopper, and the Pozole was incredible too. I really like the new layout and appreciate the very prompt service. Sorry I didn't take more pictures, but it looked too delicious to wait!

Yelp
We just went for date night and it was delicious! Very authentic Mexican, not Tex-mex-y at all. We got tacos (carne asada, pastor, beef birria, and barbacoa), a carne asada quesadilla, guac, rice, and refried beans. The carne asada was my fav (closely followed by the birria) and my husband LOVED the pastor. Everything was so good! The lady was so friendly and helpful, explaining the menu, showing pictures and giving examples of each dish. She was bilingual and made sure to ask our preference. Food came out quickly and steaming!

Yelp
Great food and welcoming service. I had the barbacoa and chicarron tacos on corn. Lots of flavor and I like that it wasn't super greasy like a lot of the taquerias I go to. Definitely found my new lunch spot. Will take pictures next time I go

Yelp
Burrito was enormous and delicious. The service was fast and friendly. It was a great place to eat, chat, and relax.

Yelp
The service was amazing. The owner explained everything to us very patient while my twins ordered. The nice was superb.

Yelp
We had such a great experience. Wonderful food. Even tried by a friend who happens to be from Mexico City and she said the food was very authentic! Definitely try this place! Yummm.

Yelp
I will 100% be back! The best darn chicharron, only served on Saturdays so you'd best come early!! The parrillada meat platter with carne asada and birria were tasty, the carne asada was a tad overcooked and chewy but in general all super flavorful. My family couldn't stop raving about their burritos and breakfast tacos. The chilaquiles were delicious. I highly recommend you come to this delicious Mexican food (not Tex-mex) joint where you'll not only get wonderfully tasty Mexican food but also good service with a smile, it was fantastic. The location is super casual and kept clean. Parking is limited.

Yelp
Finally on the correct side of Parmer so pulled in. Matamoros tacos, refried beans and rice. Big plate. Took 2 home and a large charro beans. Definitely count g back. Meat was seasoned well. trying the Torta this week. definitely need ti try this place.

Yelp
Extremely disappointed. Drove 1 hour to get here from bee cave. Portions were extremely small and had very little protein. I talked to them and explained and showed them the instagram ad. They agreed it wasn't the same portion but didn't seem to care. Which is why this review is being written

Yelp
Tacos here were delicious. Our personal favorite was the carne asada tacos, great flavor. Such great service and super friendly owners! Lots of seating inside. Can't wait til they open their outdoor dining area. Will come back to try their other options!

Yelp

Yelp
Good food! Great service! Prices for Mexican food is a little high than other places. Would definitely return for the gordita
google avatar

Yelp
Had dinner at the Grilleria and it was really like a taste of Mexico. The best carne asada tacos and chilaquiles in North Austin/Domain area. Wish I had taken a picture but we devoured our meals.
google avatar

April A.

Yelp
Asada tacos were absolutely delicious, we went back 2 weekends in a row because we had to try the Al Pastor and barbacoa. Highly recommend! Family friendly, no kids meal but you can purchase single tacos or the quesadilla. Friendly service, we asked for recommendations and they did not fail us.

Lola G.

Yelp
This was a wonderful experience! The portions are very large, and the food itself was delicious! The service was also amazing! Everyone was so kind and extremely helpful. Definitely coming again! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone :)

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food. We had the Matamoros tacos. We tried the chicken tinga, beef birria and pork carnitas. Everything was excellent! Jorge let us try the charcoal grilled ribeye which is going to be added to the menu soon. It was so tender and tasty. Owner is super friendly. Please give this a place a try. You won't be disappointed.

Robstella Z.

Yelp
Waited over an hour for our food and the food was cold. We had to ask repeatedly for our drinks which also took over an hour to get. If you wait over an hour for food it should at least come out hot. I wish I could give it no stars Ridiculous

Isaac M.

Yelp
Place is incredibly unorganized. Took over an hour to get a simple order of tacos and 1 lemonade. Food was cold and drink was hot. Overall a horrible experience and I wasn't the only one everyone else was getting the same treatment

Tete R.

Yelp
The pozole was horrible, greasy, re-heated and no flavor at all. The prices are higher than other Mexican restaurants. My stomach hurts as soon I eat it

Alejandra C.

Yelp
Super rico el menu. Auténtica comida Mexicana. Gracias The Grill Eria A mis hijos también lea encantó.!

Vanessa B.

Yelp
This place is great. We ordered takeout online. Got the fajita chicken and beef. I ordered it with both flour and corn tortillas and they were excellent. It was enough for dinner and lunch the next day. Can't wait to try the other menu items.

Brian W.

Yelp
I have eaten here twice and haven't been disappointed yet. Most recently, I had the chicharrones, and I'm affraid I won't order anything else in future visits. They were legit! My 15 year old son loved them as well. I work in the Domain, and look forward to ordering The Grill-eria for lunch via doordash. The new menu coming, featuring more grilled food is exciting too.
