Where to Eat and Drink on Detroit’s Avenue of Fashion - Eater Detroit

"This popular food truck run by Durden’s Catering is parked in the lot beside Baker’s serving big sandwiches and desserts like banana pudding and peach cobbler. Its claim to fame is the Spicy Yung Gripper, a fried chicken sandwich with pepper jack cheese, tangy coleslaw, and bang sauce. Bring cash or pay through the Cash App." - Amber Ogden

13 Crispy Fried Chicken Sandwiches in Metro Detroit

"Thanks, in part, to the fanfare over its fried chicken sandwich, Durden’s Catering is now slinging fried chicken sandwiches, fries, and banana pudding from a food truck parked in the lot next to Baker’s Keyboard Lounge. This well-traffic mobile kitchen is named after its flagship sandwich, the Famous Spicy Yung Gripper, featuring crispy, spicy fried chicken with pickle chips, tangy slaw, pepper jack cheese, and bang sauce. Every order comes with saucy parmesan fries. Place orders in person and note that the truck only accepts payment with cash or Cash App, so prepare accordingly." - Eater Staff, Brenna Houck

The Yung Gripper is that deal... But The Granddaddy didn't even make the picture that salmon was so juicy it would be a sin to eat 2 cause I'm beyond full.

In 2 weeks time my office has gone from: me being the only order....to ordering 10 at a time. If you work in an office, you know how hard it is to please that many people consistently. Not to mention, it is a 20 minute drive back. The "Gripper" and the fries are still crispy. Amazing!! The only changes: add grape kool-aid....and please add online advance ordering. Otherwise perfect!

Google
I just had the spicy chicken sandwich. Easily one of the best chicken sandwiches I've had in a while. It came out quick, it was fresh and the price was right. There's limited seating on the sidewalk as well. I'll be back.

Google
THE GRIPPER FOOD TRUCK STOLE MY DOLLAR (PETTY) the sandwich was ok, the service was HORRIBLE. My gripper cost $14, I gave the lady $15, i get NO receipt, NO change, (now its a principal).....I ask for my change, and she gives me TWO cents.......as if A) the tax wasn't included & B) the tax on $14 is .98 To STEAL my little dollar, and then INSULT my intelligence is UNACCEPTABLE RUDE and DISAPPOINTING.

Google
Completely disappointed!!!! I drove all the way down from 23 Mile and Gratiot to get a lamb chop dinner with three extra sides. I ordered my food at 4:40pm and was told it would take 30 to 40 minutes for my order to be up. I wait outside, in a line full of other people for an hour in a half!! When I got back to my truck to check the order my sides were completely wrong. I was so frustrated and wore out I didn't even feel like going to get my money back after paying $50, or say anything. However, I did comment on Instagram, on the same lamb chop dinner post, to say what happened and the picture was deleted so that means my comment was deleted. I inboxed the owner and told him that this was completely unprofessional. Just sad!!

Google
Worst customer service ever. This was my first time trying this place. I called in my order at 1:16 and I was told my order would be ready in 5 minutes. When I arrived I stood in line to pay and waited an additional 30 minutes after doing so. When I asked when would the food be ready the cashier told me they were bagging it up. After another additional 5 minutes I ask again in which they told me they were preparing my food. When I told them I had ordered over 40 minutes I was told “ That’s why we don’t do call ins”. There was no problem taking my order over the phone yet when I got there nothing was prepared. I got a refund and left.

Yelp
This place has been on my list for a while now. I finally decided to stop by. I called ahead to place my order with the hopes that it would cut down on any wait time I might encounter. This plan seemed to work well and is highly recommended. The experience - located on the south east corner or Livernois and 7 Mile the place is easy to spot as it shares the building with Bakers Keyboard Lounge. While there is a food truck parked in the lot, food was actually being served from a pick up window inside a tiny vestibule. The method was a bit unorganized but the friendliness the staff made this easy to overlook. The food tastes just as good as it looks. The menu selections are creative and feature the famous "gripper" sandwiches which are stacked and piled high with yummy goodness. If you've been ogling the food pics on social media like I have, you should go on in and try it. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Just ok, but nothing I would venture out for again. The social media pics are definitely convincing; and I am all for supporting small businesses, so I gave this eccentric menu a try. I ordered the fried lobster sandwich. Upon first bite, I noticed the lobster was gravely overcooked. I couldn't enjoy any of it from there. Seems like the sandwich would be fine if they master the correct cook time for the crustacean. Also perhaps take one thing off, in the immortal words of the great Coco Chanel. All of those toppings overshadowed the lobster, which is delicious, expensive ($30 for a sandwich) and shouldn't be overdressed. I didn't care for the fries for pretty much the same reason...overdressing. There was enough parmesan on them for three orders. Expensive misstep for me. I don't mind paying excessive amounts for really good food occasionally, but no more grippers for me.

Yelp
There has to be a better way to serve guest. You pretty much have to wait outside for your name to be called. Despite calling in, I waited 30 minutes. What would be more efficient is to simply walk the food to customers cars similar to restaurants like chili's this will keep the traffic at a minimum and keep it flowing. There were a lot of traffic which is good for business. Social distancing was reinforced. Most workers wore mask. However a few workers did not wear mask correctly. The food prices were decent. The sandwich was good but they forgot my fries. I would try again after covid

Yelp
My cousin and I stopped in to grab lunch. I had the Catfish Gripper and my cousin had the Spicy Yung Gripper. The sandwiches are served with Parmesan Fries. My Catfish Gripper was DELICIOUS! We had about a 20 minute drive to my aunt's to eat. Boy was it a long ride! The aroma coming from the bag was mouth watering. It was still fresh tasting. The lettuce, tomato, pickles and cole slaw were crisp. The fish was seasoned and fried to perfection. The sandwich had the perfect amount of sauce. I will return to experience more of their offerings and the Catfish Gripper again.

Yelp
Thank you thank you! Everyone loved the food at our family reunion cookout. They especially loved the red skin potatoes, the grilled vegetables, and the BBQ sauce on the chicken breast. I know I sent a million emails, with a bunch of changes... thank you for being patient with me. I'll definitely be using you again.

Yelp
I sooooooo wanted to love this place. The hype is huge and I was so ready to partake. I was slightly let down and sorry I chose this. The philly came with seasoned fries and drink. However!!!!! The seasoning for the fries wasn't actually in my fries. It's in the bottom of the container, under my fries just kinda poured in and over. When I got to the bottom of the ontainer to taste, it did have a great flavor. I just wish it was on my fries. Let down. The drink I chose was a sprite. You can see from my picture the purpley red liquid was in fact NOT a sprite. Let down 2 Onto the chicken philly. Lord.. I said a small prayer over this sandwich. Everything else was troublesome and this was my last thing. The chicken philly was good, not great, not mind blowing just... good. Would I venture to try them again? Probably not, there were more misses than hits here. Sadly this was not a win for me.

Yelp
If you have never had a gripper sandwich from here you are missing out. They offer many variations but I got the original chicken gripper. Which consists of a fried chicken breast, Cole slaw, pickles, pepper jack and bang bang sauce on a brioche bun. It's the best combination of crunchy and a little bit of spice. In addition to the chicken gripper they also offer a catfish and salmon version. You can't go wrong with any option. On Tuesdays they also have tacos and nachos which also are cooked perfectly. If you're familiar with the west side of Detroit Durden's is on the side of Baker's Keyboard lounge. Currently during this pandemic they are serving from their food truck in the parking lot. No call ins, walk up only at this time.

Yelp
Delicious! I think, no I know I just had the best chicken sandwich ever in LIFE. Seasoned, juicy, perfect meat to bun ratio, the sauce, pickles and brioche bun were the perfect compliment. Chef Tony was nice and as a first time customer had to try the Yung Gripper! Looking forward to my next visit already. Can't wait to try some of the other items on the menu!!

Yelp
I've been wanting to try his other dishes so when I saw they were serving Sunday dinner I jumped on it. Very disappointing I wanted lemon honey wings with dressing and collard greens they didn't have the dressing so I ordered two side of the collards. Food presentation was great but the greens tasted like soap and were tooo salty the chicken was ok but could of been cooked a lil longer. I love his chicken sandwiches if I crave one of those I'll revisit but I was so disappointed

Yelp
Long line but for a reason. This spot has an amazing amount of flavor on their food. The fires had be almost licking the damn paper! Keep up the great work in the kitchen and you'll continue having my support :)

Yelp
DO NOT EAT here‼ There was a screw in my sweet potatoes - I returned my entire plate & was told they would reverse the charges - I'm still waiting for my refund. Eat at your own risk - the pictures are misleading.

Yelp
My wife is 9 months pregnant and we just finished moving into our new home. We decided to cater some of our thanksgiving meal this year to ease into the new place and for convenience. We never had Durden's catering and decided to place an order from their thanksgiving catering menu. We ordered the Mac and cheese, yams, glazed ham, peach cobbler and deviled eggs. Pickup was schedule for the day before thanksgiving. Durden's allowed you to pick your time slot for pickup which was very convenient. I confirmed my order and had the car packed up in 10 minutes. Very efficient. All of the food was very good and the family loved it. This was our first time ordering from Durden's and will be back in the future for Thanksgiving ordering and possible catering opportunities.

Yelp
5 Clucks for Durden's Chicken Sandwich! I recently heard the buzz about Durden's Catering and the Gripper chicken sandwich which has commanded mini celebrity status, even making an appearance on Fox 2 news. I must say it was one of the best chicken sandwiches I've ever eaten. The chicken has a little kick, not overbearingly spicy but just enough to make it interesting. The cool creaminess of the slaw contrast the spiciness perfectly. I'm not sure what kind of sauce they use, and it kind of gets lost in the flavor of the slaw and cheese, but all flavors blended together to make a mini musical in your mouth. I highly recommend it, and look forward to trying some of their other menu items. There was a bit of a wait, but was to be expected due to the recent Fox 2 news exposure. The carryout waiting space is tiny, so I advise calling ahead, I can't imagine more than 8 people fitting in the space at the same time.

Lovey R.

Yelp
Spent $122 waited an hour! The lamb chops were small, broke up and over cooked! The chicken still had feathers on the pieces! But the killer was the fried lobster that wasn't seasoned well! It was the first and last time going there! Px

Yelp
Really good chicken sandwich!!! If I was doing a review of the sandwich alone, five stars easily! I called my order in (Thank God) it was a 45min wait no exaggeration. I ordered the chicken sandwich with fries and a koolaid and my husband just a sandwich with bacon and cheese, our total was $32.00 a little pricey to me but..... My first bite was into the fries and less than stellar is the best way to describe them. I will never order them again!!! The chicken though!!! I will definitely go back for that! The size, flavor and juiciness of the chicken made up for the lackluster fries.

Yelp
Just had the chicken sandwich with fries , greatly seasoned with a kick .... Fries a bit soggy but good ....

Yelp
Overall, Durden's Catering did a wonderful job for our wedding. The tasting was fantastic, and the food at the wedding was wonderful - everyone raved about it. Chef Tony also checked in with us throughout the day to be sure everything was to our liking. This would be a 5 star review - but their planner Brandy brings this down to 4. She would return calls about a week after a message was left, emails were responded to several days later, and usually at 1:30 in the morning- it was frustrating. We purchased the top of the line package that Durden's offered, and this was not the sort of treatment we expected for the money, we spent. Many thanks to Chef Tony for all he did, as he went above and beyond.

Yelp
Due to this virus I ain't been outside lately but I'm so sick of doing dishes it was mandatory today. My mans awst and my mans Dave said Durden's catering was some fye so when I seen he was doing that chicken sandwich today it was very mandatory. I got the buffalo joint with the fries and my dog. 10/10. Worth it. It was fried to perfection and sauced tf up. The bun was perfectly cooked too I can tell somebody back there putting they heart and soul into them damn sandwiches. Chef Tony got a fan in me. I hope he keep cooking during this shutdown cause I'll try whatever he making. My dog got us practicing social distancing too it was helly space between all the customers shopping and allat. Stay safe and try some durdens next Saturday!

Laura G.

Yelp
I don't know if they were cooking them too fast or don't use thermometers to temp their chicken before serving it but mine was slightly undercooked and when I tried to get a refund I got a bunch of attitude and the boss isn't here and we can't do this or that until he get here and blah blah blah

Yelp
I was very pleased with my experience using Durden's Catering! Chef Tony (Mr. Durden) was very professional & thorough. I shopped around prior to booking and he was also fair in price! I purchased a fruit table with ice sculpture for my event, he arrived a hour before it started and set everything up. The table was beautiful & the fruit was sweet. I'll definitely be booking him for future events!

Yelp
I'd heard so many good things about the establishment and was excited to try the food. I waited in line at the truck and as I got my food home I was so excited...well as I took a bite I was intrigued with the taste of the chicken. It was thrown together, so I wasn't happy with my sandwich. Maybe after the restaurant opens back up I'll try it again.

Kalynn G.

Yelp
It was just ok! I got the rockin bbq gripper and the breading wasn't even on the chicken and was fryed too hard. I also got the chicken wings, there was no flavor at all. I was so mad because the pictures look so good. And the Parmesan fries were bad

Yelp
Ordered from the Gripper Food truck. Very nice customer service/ reasonable wait time. Got a chicken gripper combo, catfish gripper combo and peach cobbler. Everything was pretty decent. Fries were good. I preferred the chicken gripper. The catfish was good and fresh but not sure i liked it with all those flavors. Im wondering if the 10 min drive home affected how it tasted Lol The buns were smushed from the container being packed. The chicken was a nice size but the breading had separated by the time i ate it. There wasnt much sauce on the bubs making them both a little dry. (Maybe it got soaked up?) There was a lot of flavor from the pickles and cole slaw so i feel like the effort was there lol but missed the mark for me. On the bright side...I the peach cobbler was really good. My mom said it really should be called peach cobbler pudding since the crust part didnt have the traditional consistency it was like blended or something. But like i said it was good, flavor was there!

Tyrellie S.

Yelp
So disappointed in this food. Lack of flavor over cooked breading and too much honey. I'm a chef and I've had lots of food but I don't get what the hype was about the chicken dippers. I've taste chicken cooked in church kitchens that's way better than this. I want to support my people but they need to learn consistency. My chicken was horrible and that was my first and last try of this over hyped food. The people in Detroit aren't used to good quality food so they just run with the hype. The food was inedible and I wish I could give it a negative star.

Best food in metro Detroit area, HANDS DOWN. YES I SAID IT! Greatest chicken sandwiches ever c

Yelp
Durden's is great! Chef Tony catered our work Holiday Party at The Detroit History Museum. Communication, food quality, and hospitality were all 5 star. Chef Tony even came out to the event and served us. Durden's got me lots of kudos from staff around the company on a great event with great food. We will certainly consider Durden's again for any catering needs in the future.

Tiffany M.

Yelp
We ordered a catfish dinner with macaroni and cheese along with a big gripper sandwich and Cajun chicken pasta. We had to go to the actual food truck to get the sandwich which was about 10-12 miles away which was a huge inconvenience. Was the food good, yes. Do I need to go again, no!

Yelp
Durden's Catering is amazing. They did an outstanding job on my wedding reception on 9/9/17. The food was awesome!!!!!! The fruit display looked like something from a magazine and tasted just as good. The staff was very friendly. My guests are still raving about the food and the presentation. From start to finish they were very professional, easy to talk to and very accommodating. Chef Tony provided a special menu for our Vegan guests and they were blown away. I highly recommend Durden's Catering for all of your events. I will definitely use their services again.

Yelp
I made an order over the phone for a fish sandwich. I specifically asked what type of fish. She responded catfish. I then asked to remove the coleslaw, remove the pickles, add lettuce and tomatoes. She gave me my total and we hung up. I arrived to get my order, paid $10 and I opened the container and asked "Is this chicken or fish it looks dark?" The lady responded "its fish".. I left. I arrived to work, open the container and of course it was chicken. I called the restaurant back to tell them that It was chicken. The lady who answered the phone blamed the girl who took my order but never took responsibility for her acknowledging that it was FISH. Another lady called me back and the first thing she said when I answered was "Our policy is that the customer check their food before leaving". Well obviously, she's an idiot and shouldn't be a manager because she failed to ask me whether or not I did check my order. I did check the order when I opened the container and asked was this chicken or fish. So at this point, no need to allow her to say anything else.. I was ready to get off of the phone because I already had my mind made up that I will NEVER order from this restaurant again. Two reasons- their attitude sucks and the food is nasty anyways.

Yelp
My job used Durden's Catering based the recommendation from a board member. First let me say this I cater as well so I tend to judge people including hard. So, first off the people Durden's Catering sent to do our union picnic was late arriving to the park. They were suppose to grill hamburgers, hot dogs and veggie burgers with bake beans and a pasta salad and fruit for 100 people. I began to get concerned after they arrived late and still had to grill the food. The picnic was to start at 12 noon they were suppose to be there at 10 am; they arrived after 11 am with a small fold and go grill and still had to do set up and start the grill. As a cater I'm thinking how are they going to pull this off. Well I guess you could if you grilled the hamburgers, hot dogs and veggie burgers the day before and hurry up and try and warm up on the fold and go grill. The bake beans were decent; and the fruit was good and the pasta salad I wasn't impressed with. It was dry probably would have been better if they would have added some more dressing to it. The hotdogs, hamburgers and veggie burgers were room temperature not hot at all didn't even melt the cheese; they didn't provide any plates, napkins water, juice or pop all that stuff was extra per item if I'm not mistaken and they charged for 2 supposedly Grill Master (I think not); especially when the grilled food was cold and they even put the grilled food in warmers, which didn't help. Maybe had they arrived earlier that may have worked but because they were late it didn't. They charged $900 for what I named without providing the basics. I would never recommend Durden's Catering.

Yelp
I have been putting off writing this review because I know that once the news gets out about Durden's Catering they will be all booked up quickly. Every December I host a holiday party for my staff. Unfortunately, my previous caterer showed up last year over an hour late with cold unseasoned food. I vowed never to return. I searched Yelp for a possible replacement with a great deal of anxiety because I would never hire a caterer with out a personal recommendation. My back was against the wall so I emailed Durden's and received a very quick response. Because of past experiences, I really wanted to speak with someone and I talked to Brandi. Brandi was so personable and professional. She listened to my woes with my previous caterer and assured me that would not happen with Durden's. The price quote was reasonable. More importantly, the food was OUTSTANDING. Chef Tony is a master at great tasting food. I decided to host a breakfast with my staff this year. The food arrived on time and the Terry, the gentleman who delivered helped to set up my entire buffet. We had the most delicious fried chicken wings, waffles, cheesy potatoes, eggs with onions and peppers, creamy grits, sausage, bacon and a lovely fruit tray. Everything was well seasoned and hot. My staff loved every minute and can't wait for next year. If you are like me, when I'm hosting a party I want the best for my guests and nothing kills a party like bad food. Do yourself a favor, call Durden's! You and your guests will enjoy great service and the best food in town.

Roslyn J.

Yelp
My mother spent a lot of money to have the phone catered by Darren for my father's repass. Although all of the food was delicious. No complaint on the seasoning the portions it was delicious. Set up was all so beautiful. But I can only give you two stars because, they were 1 hour late and they had to setup for another 45 minutes. After spending all of that money for that delicious food some guest I had to leave because it took so long for them to eat. After everything was over everyone started to pack up a gentleman told me that he will wrap up all of the pans, so that we can take the left over food home. I soon left and was waiting for my sister and mother to bring the food home. But once they came home with no leftover food I was told, that they were told, that they could not bring the leftover food home. I was pissed because the gentleman server insured me that I can take the food home, but after I left the lady server told my mother she cannot have the leftover food. My mother paid a lot of money for that food. She has also just buried her husband of 47 years. She didn't want to argue and she did want to get upset but that's her, that's not me. I would like someone to contact me no later than Tuesday July 18th 2019. Or else I will go to Fox 2 because I am highly upset.

Yelp
I found Durdens Catering on Facebook, and it was the best find ever. Tony Durden catered two of my office luncheons and the food is beyond delicious! Everything is well seasoned, fresh, and hot. Hands down the best turkey/dressing/yams, that I have had.
