Beloved Vegetarian and Vegan Restaurant the Grit Is Closing in Athens, Georgia - Eater Atlanta

"A much loved vegetarian and vegan restaurant is shutting its doors after 36 years in Athens next month, when the Grit closes on October 7. An announcement posted to Facebook Thursday afternoon indicates continuing struggles stemming from the pandemic were making it difficult to keep the restaurant afloat. For many Athens residents, University of Georgia alumni, and local musicians, the Grit represents more in their lives than just a restaurant with good food. For some, their introduction to tofu, hummus, and a broader range of vegetarian and vegan foods happened at the Grit, giving the restaurant crossover appeal in Athens. This includes serving sandwiches like the grilled tofu Reuben on rye and a falafel pita stuffed with hummus and vegetables tossed in tzatziki dressing. The Golden Bowl garnered several mentions in the comments. The dish features tofu cubes sauteed in soy sauce and nutritional yeast served over brown rice with the option to add cheese and vegetables." - Beth McKibben

3 Best Day Trips from Atlanta

"Housed in a weathered brick building on the outskirts of downtown, The Grit feels lived-in and comfortable. It’s been an Athens institution since the 1990s, when non-vegetarians were a little wary of an all-vegetarian restaurant. It still sports the faded brick, turquoise trim, and a chalkboard of rotating specials, but it’s won a voracious following of carnivores as well as non-meat eaters. With seating in two indoor rooms and a few outdoor tables, there’s almost always a wait, whether you come for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, but it's worth it. The black bean chili makes appearances in several dishes, including an overstuffed burrito and the loaded nachos with melted cheese and homemade salsa. The tofu Reuben is so well seasoned you might forget it doesn’t actually contain pastrami." - Jennifer Bradley Franklin

Absolutely amazing brunch destination! Cheese grits were heavenly. Service wasn't amazing, but it wasn't bad. Everything on the menu was priced fairly. Portions were much larger than expected. Definitely would recommend.

They know what they're doing. Absolutely love and highly recommend the grit. Delightful cozy diner atmosphere and lots of options and cuisines to choose from. Their menu is creative and the food is very fresh. For specific menu items - the grit style tofu, tabbouleh, and split pea dal are wonderful! The black bean chili is salty and intense on it's own - best served with/as side. I am not a fan of their cakes unfortunately, they are quite dry. They do have delicious flavor combos though. I am always excited to try new things from their menu and specials - this place is truly a gem in Athens.

Awesome food, great service! We got the loaded nachos, grilled cheese, sweet potato fries, and the Golden Bowl. Everything we ate was delicious and the portions were so large, we took half of our food home. The sweet potato fries were the best I've ever had! I was also really impressed with the grilled cheese as their homemade bread was better than I've ever made myself.

Truly enjoyed our lunch here. Had the noodle special with tofu and it was a little spicy and very tasty. We also had nachos and a burrito. All were fantastic. Had a chocolate cream coconut pie that was a little dry, but it was still flavorful. Considering how busy it was the service was relatively fast and coffee and tea refills were provided. We'll definitely be going back.

Really love coming to The Grit. They have some great menu selections and everything is vegan. The place has a very casual vibe and the servers are super friendly. Parking can be a bit tricky but we always manage to find something. A fantastic place and highly recommended.

The gyro was delicious! More on the side of a chicken flavor rather than lamb or beef. I really enjoyed it and appreciated that the pita was toasted as well. Yummy sweet potato fries Super attentive staff and very friendly!

Delicious! I have loved this restaurant since I was a kid. I love the many choices they have, and I especially love the fact that they are 100% vegetarian, and also have many vegan options.

I wish I could give this restaurant more stars. Everything was delicious. I ordered the steak sandwich and had to double check that it was vegan. 😀😀😀 I also had the ginger apple maple cake and that was superb as well. My family members are not vegan and they enjoyed their food choices as well.
