"The owners of Mount Pleasant’s Grace & Grit will add a lunch restaurant named The Grit Counter this week. The new midday addition takes over the former Welkin Coffee space at 320 Wingo Way. Manager Eli Kline told Eater a bit more about the decidedly Southern menu. The bowls range from “The Self-Respecting Southerner” with smoked pecan grits, fried chicken, collard greens, and tomato jam to the “The Two Southeasterns” with creamy grits, pho broth, pickled collards, shaved onions, bacon, and a fried egg. Non-grit bowl items include a Southern egg salad sandwich, an oyster po’ boy, she crab soup, a grilled Caesar salad, and more. Once open, The Grits Counter will serve lunch patrons on Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m." - Erin Perkins

Google
My friends and I just got to town and decided on the Grit Counter since it was highly rated on Trip Advisor. This is brought to you by the Owners of Grace and Grit which is connected in the same building. The menu at the Grit Counter is mostly grits but they have sandwiches, soups and salads. What I liked is you can order a signature bowl or create your own. For me that was overwhelming so I ordered a signature bowl. I ordered the self-respecting Island Southerner with fried chicken, “red rice” grits, collard and hot honey. After ordering I found out this was really two meals as I only ate half. The chicken was a white meat chicken breast patty. There were a lot of greens but they weee hiding under the chicken. The grits had sausage which I could’ve done without. The meal was good, I was expecting a more robust flavor, I did add some hot sauce which enhanced the flavor some. My friends ordered the shrimp and grits. I tasted what looked like gravy which was pretty good. There were only 5 shrimps so not as much protein as my dish had. To my surprise our girlfriend ordered the gourmet ice cream sandwich. They cut it into thirds for us to share. OMG it was soooo good!! The chocolate chip cookie was soft and a little warm. The ice cream was cookies and cream. The place was clean and the Staff was really nice. I got Jeff (pictured) who was really sweet. They get bonus points for using only a canola/vegetable blend oil. This is HUGE since I have a peanut and soy allergy. They were lots of items that were only fried so that’s great news for allergy sufferers. The prices were reasonably priced around $15 per bowl, but the meal is large enough to two. I would make sure to ask about the protein so there’s enough to share or if you can add protein. We walked next door to see Grace and Grit. It looked really nice. We will have come back and try it the next time I’m in town!! Review provided by Jennifer V-E Johnson

Google
The Grit Counter - Mt. Pleasant. Think chipotle but with grits might have been my favorite meal in Charleston so far but there were some pretty high bars with the barbecue and seafood. The burger with the cheesy grits cake was by far my favorite, but we pretty well ordered through the menu and nobody had any clunkers. You should give us place to try.

Google
Beautiful, clean, fast, fresh and friendly establishment. I had the chicken and waffles with bacon lardons and I must say it’s the best I’ve ever tasted. My husband ordered the build a bowl and his was delicious. The menu had plenty of options. A must try if you’re even slightly interested.

Google
The side of fried pickles were very generous and delicious. The salsa Verde was amazing and the smoked Gouda grits were everything I thought they would be (fantastic). The bacon jam was super sweet and overpowered the grits. The smoked jalapeno gravy was barely present and didn't add anything to the dish. The roasted corn was not roasted at all. The hot chicken had a great breading and crunch to it. All in all I loved it. I'll definitely come back!

Google
Grits are not something we usually eat, so I didn’t know what to expect. But this was grits elevated to true foodie level. Everything about the Grit Counter is first rate. The presentation was beautiful and the flavors were fantastic. I got the Brunch Bowl which was delicious with thick pork belly bacon chunks and a deliciously warm base of jalapeño cheddar grits. My daughter got the Ranchero bowl which I absolutely loved, so we switched. It had a wonderful chorizo flavor with a little fresh green salsa that balanced the flavor. My son got a Charleston hot chicken sandwich that was juicy and just the right amount of kick. Even the coffee was delicious, if you like strong brewed coffee, which I do. It was a delicious meal that filled us up all day. Highly recommended.

Google
Employees are exceptionally nice and helpful. They know their menu well, and made great recommendations. My favorite is the BLT Signature Bowl which is just amazing -- an explosion of wonderful flavors and textures. The Smoked Local Fish & Clam Chowder was also delicious -- creamy and hearty. The Shrimp & Grits Signature Bowl was very tasty -- the shrimps were big and fresh tasting. Lastly, their Sweet Peach Tea is always great! They are very accommodating, and will split your meal and serve it in two bowls by request. LOVE this place! We were told they are within a few weeks of opening another Grit Counter in North Charleston. I understand it is located across the street from the box office entrance to the North Charleston Coliseum.

Google
Insane food. Best bowl of grits I've had in Charleston, possibly anywhere. Cannot recommend enough. The house-made chorizo is legit, do NOT miss on that. Also, great customer service, zero complaints about this place.

Google
This was my first time at the grit counter, but it was phenomenal. Just walking in you immediately can tell the kitchen set up is VERY clean and professional, and the chefs are well trained. The environment is welcoming but relaxed. I wanted to try EVERY dish I watched them put out. The portions are big, my bf and I probably could have just split one bowl of the shrimp and grits. I truly appreciate the idea behind this, so innovative. 0 complaints and can’t wait to go back

Yelp
OMG. This place was amazingly delicious. They have so-many grit choices to pick from. All sound delicious! Build your own grit bowl?? Or pick one of their delicious bowls. I highly recommend this restaurant. We sat at the bar and watched all the fresh ingredients go into the bowls. I need every city to have a Grit counter!! Staff at as super friendly. Very fast service. Great lunch place.

Yelp
We found the grit counter as it was near our vacation rental in Mount Pleasant. I liked the variations and menu creativity. There is no end to basically any flavor of shrimp and grits you prefer here. You can even opt for a grit flight. 4 different choices to satisfy savory and sweet. My wife thought it would be great to grit it out (pun intended). This place is also completely gluten free which is ever more important. We arrived right at 11am open and were welcomed in. The place has a modern feel and the fried chicken plate that went by looked great. We settled in the build your own grit bowls. The choices were not easy to narrow down, so many different permutations of flavor! This is a fast casual concept where you order and relax and they call you up when the food is ready. I settled in the smoked Gouda grits with grilled onion, collard greens, fresh shrimp and Brussel sprout pesto. My lady opted for smoked Gouda grits, green onion, tomatoes, spinach and fresh shrimp. These were very well executed and nicely plated. The shrimp could use just a little salt and pepper but the greens were great and the Brussel sprout pesto really surprised me. All I missed was a runny egg here but overall it was a great experience. John who took our order did great to explain the concept and was patient to guide us through the process. We settled on coffee, a beer and since it is vacation, a mimosa also. We both agreed this was a fun and very affordable meal. The open kitchen prep area runs the length of the restaurant and the place has a great natural light that breathes life into the dining room. Don't plan to eat for 8 hours as this meal will keep you full well into the evening. We really liked the fresh take and the signature grit bowls on the menu sounded great as well.

Yelp
Came here with my friends for a late lunch. I did a make your own bowl with the local grilled shrimp, fried Brussels sprouts, brussel sprout pesto, sautéed onions, and the Gouda grits. I'm not a huge grits fan but I enjoyed my bowl. A good combination of flavors. My friends who came with me who have had more grits said these were not that special. Pretty expensive though. About $22/person after everything. Portion was good but still not the best for what we were paying for.

Marty A.

Yelp
Food was great. Smaller portions than what we thought for the price. Service was good. Disappointed in the portion size of the fried green tomatoes as well. $7.50 for 8 small squares-2 slices of tomato. The jam that comes with FGT is good.

Diana D.

Yelp
This place is the best. I was passing through the area and had saved this place to get some grits because it had good reviews and a good menu. Due to other delays, we were cutting it close to their closing time but made it here just 15 minutes before they closed.  The folks at the counter were very nice and helpful. I got the shrimp and grits, while my husband got a custom one with chorizo. This is the best grit I have had so far, and portions were huge. I wish they had more franchises open in other areas. I am from the west coast but will come back here just for this.

Kyle D.

Yelp
Overall: The perfect place to scratch your grit itch! The good: Delicious grit creations that will leave you happy and full. You can build your own or pick from one of their handful of specials. The grits are creamy and rich, and the toppings are hearty and flavorful. My favorite is the shrimp and grits, which has a perfect blend of gouda, peppers, gravy and a healthy amount of (well cooked) shrimp. The ranchero bowl was another hit, with a mound of toppings that included chorizo, egg, salsa verde, and more. Service is friendly and the atmosphere is great for a order-and-sit-down type of lunch. The not-so-good: Expensive, especially the shrimp and grits bowl, but the portion sizes are worth it. Food/drink: 9/10 Atmosphere: 9/10 Service: 9/10

Yelp
Clean efficient dining room, self serve water and teas. Good food, better than most. Ordered shrimp grits, shrimp po boy and self respecting southerner. Quality ingredients well seasoned and executed. If I lived locally, I'd be here often. Grits were deeper flavor, thicker and had a lot of character. Highly recommended.

Bryce C.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing. Perhaps the best meal I had on my trip. Went for an early lunch. The place is super nice and the staff super friendly. Went with the self respecting southerner bowl and it was ready before I even sat down. The presentation was great, and their open kitchen allows you to watch them make your bowl. This bowl was executed perfectly, there is nothing bad I can say about it. Salty, sweet, and sour, the flavors and textures all went together so well. The price is also extremely affordable for what you are getting. I can eat a lot, and could barely finish my bowl. You could definitely split one bowl amongst two. A must try while in Charleston in my opinion, especially if you are looking for an excellent fast and affordable meal.

Jay J.

Yelp
We were looking for a quick and relatively light lunch, and we found The Grit Counter through Yelp reviews, so we gave it a shot. They have a big selection of grits flavors as well as many other menu items - grits bowls, sandwiches, soups, salads, and sides. Everything we ordered had good flavor. The grits and soup were a little thicker than I had expected, but the flavor was really good. The chicken salad had a nice smoked flavor and tasted really good. The ciabatta bread was really good. The Grit Counter was good. We would return if we lived in the area. I give it a 7/10 rating.

Anastasia M.

Yelp
You never can go wrong with the grit counter. We wanted to go to Grace and grit but they weren't open until 5 PM. The only reason there are four stars is because inside it was a little hot whenever customers would enter and you get a little bit of that cold air from outside it was refreshing. Other than that, we were not disappointed in our food. I got something different for a change and it was such a nice treat. The tomato grits were phenomenal and the perfectly cooked piece of fried chicken with the hot honey was amazing. I am very happy they had the pepper vinegar, hot sauce available because it paired perfectly with my greens, my friend got my favorite the meatloaf sandwich and as always it was perfect if you've never been I'll see you like I always do you gotta go and try it. They have two of them Mount Pleasant in North Charleston so there's no excuse.

Gabby C.

Yelp
Great food and even better service! There were so many options, and you truly can't go wrong. I had the shrimp and grits bowl and it was as delicious! I'm really picky about ordering grits at restaurants and these grits were the perfect consistency and well-seasoned. I will definitely be back next time I'm in the area!

Pam E.

Yelp
A little overwhelming the first time you go! The bowls are the best choice....build your own. They will give you a sample taste of any of the grits. I had my bowl with shrimp and it was delicious!

Andrew G.

Yelp
If you can finally choose from all of their mouth watering options, expect to leave very full after some really delicious food! Their grits are next level good compared to pretty much everywhere else's, and they have so many different flavors to try. Way more casual than their partner Grace and Grit, but doesn't sacrifice taste or quality. Everyone working there was super friendly and working hard to get food out quick. Can't wait to come back and try all of the other options!

Melissa E.

Yelp
If you're ever in SC, find yourself a "The Grit Counter". The BEST grits. We wished we would've visited this restaurant early on in our trip because it was the best meal we had! The entire experience from ordering our food to receiving it was A+! Don't let me forget that peach tea! Oh my lord, literally the best tea I've ever had! Grit flight: Red rice Smoked Gouda Apple pie Jalapeño cheddar BYOB: Grilled chicken - peaches and cream grits - brussel sprouts - caramelized onions - hot honey sauce Grilled shrimp - smoked Gouda grits - collard greens - roasted corn - seafood chowder

Landon C.

Yelp
A great place to get a great lunch with pretty quick service. If you like grits or even if you don't you need to try the grits here. We ordered the flight of 9, a side of hush puppies and a side of fried green tomatoes. Each was superb. We liked the more cheesy, savory grits but all were good.

Kyle R.

Yelp
Excellent food. I would HIGHLY recommend The Grit Counter. We were greeted upon arrival, provided with an overview of the menu, and immediately felt welcome. We ordered The Ranchero (grit bowl pictured) and Burger (not pictured). Both were full of flavor, texture, and finesse. We also had a side of fried green tomatoes with bacon jam which was a real highlight! 5 star experience. 5 star service. 5 star food. Do not miss!

Naw-am D.

Yelp
If you only had ONE day in Charleston... skip the other spots and stop by The Grit Counter. It's. That. GOOD! It is, quite possibly, the only restaurant in Charleston that hit the high marks on everything I looked for in Charleston for my foodie venture: Great service. Beautiful 'Instaworthy' Restaurant. Freakin Delicious Food. Great Prices. FREE Parking lol. The Grit Counter truly gave me an authentic, southern experience with it's simple, modern ingenuity of transforming a simple, homely bowl of grits. Located across the Ravenel Bridge, right in front of the Holiday Inn, The Grit counter appears to share the same building as Grace and Grit. I first walked in and was greeted so warmly by three lovely gentlemen. They had such friendly smiles and helpful suggestions. The gyst of the ordering process is pretty straightforward.. you make a grit bowl! Think Chipotle but with a Southern transformation. For your base they have so many grit options! Jalapeño cheddar grits, smoked Gouda grits or simply plain grits. You pick two different vegetables (I chose Brussels sprouts and collard greens) , choose a sauce like gravy or hot honey (I chose green tomato bacon jam) , then finally your protein like fried shrimp, fried oysters (I chose fried chicken). Be prepared to be overwhelmed with the amount of options you have if you decide to create your own grit bowl. Luckily enough they have Signature bowls if you wanna try their creation and play it safe. They also have other great options like sandwiches and salads. Let's just say I freaking LOVED my grit bowl. I really had low expectations. I thought it looked too modern and.. there's no way they can compete with these ma and pop places I love going to for good ol' grits. But, Lord Almighty, you will fall in love like I did. They know what they are doing and they're proud of it. My chicken was so crispy on the outside , tender and juicy on the inside. My grits were warm and the PERFECT texture. My brussels and collard greens were well seasoned and made by somebody who loves food like I do. I am truly, very impressed. I wouldn't be surprised if they've been featured on the food network or will be featured soon. They are phenomenal! How I wish I can transport this establishment right in my city! I can't wait to come back here!

Jennifer F.

Yelp
Average. Probably won't go back. The chicken used in the Caesar salad was pre-made and tough. I expected fresh grilled tender chicken.

Max M.

Yelp
My wife got into the free Yelp Week event but I went with her and of course I agreed to, and had to, pay. Unfortunately the Wi-Fi was down so they could not charge me. I ended up agreeing to give them cash at the end of our meal. Some of the people apparently were turned away but some apparently were told that they could call in later and give their credit card information to them. Just so you know, there is a 3.5% up charge if you use a credit card, which is understandable as that is what a business pays for our using a credit card, from what I know. As a native Charlestonian, I can tell you that there are many places around that have shrimp and grits most of them with small chunks of tasso ham, which is the traditional way of preparing it. Trust me on this review --this is the very best shrimp and grits that you will ever have, but NOT the traditional at all. ($18) It sorta has tasso ham as they serve this dish with "tasso ham red eye gravy." The smoked gouda grits are unbelievably tasty and creamy. Those smoked gouda words were what drew me in to ordering this "Signature Bowl." I have purchased smoked gouda cheese a number of times in the grocery store, and always have loved the taste, but not so much the cost, always hoping that it was on sale. Here, it was truly the creation of a signature meal. The medium size shrimp are softly and properly cooked. Added to this richness are thin slices of peppers (like green bell peppers and thus not spicy hot) and onions with scallions on top of it all. It must be the combination of the tasso red eye gravy on the smoked gouda grits that make this so very, very delicious. Oh, yes, I will be back to have this same dish again, between 11 AM to 3 PM, their hours Tuesday through Saturday. Note that they are closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Jim A.

Yelp
As tourist we wanted the Southern experience and this place did not disappoint. The portions were large and the food was tasty. We came hear after our tour guide from the Boone plantation recommended it. We were served very wuic

Nikki B.

Yelp
Upon arriving, customers were being turned away. The computers went down so I didn't get to try it. I was looking forward to it. I thought they would try to reboot the system but the staffed appeared to be perfectly fine with it. Maybe some other time,,,

Scher S.

Yelp
First let me say that the food is absolutely delicious! Very well thought menu, I just wish that you could combine 2 meats on the grits bowl because l wanted to try so many things so I will just have to go back. It not a very large space so I &was not wild about the table arrangements. I like a more personal set up but it wasn't crowded which made it ok. My only suggestion would be for them to get smaller glasses for their mimosas so that when you pay $9 for a 1/4 filled glass you don't feel cheated.

Mark B.

Yelp
Food: excellent (Brunch Bowl) Drink: average (iced coffee not good), but was also provided a reusable cup for water, which was thoughtful Service: very good (fast, friendly, they announce the order on a mic which is also piped outside) Music: above average (Bill withers, Hard to Handle remake) Value: above average Other: outside area w lots of shade, cloth napkins, reusable cups

Kimesha O.

Yelp
This spot is nothing short of amazing. The grits are fresh & creamy. The fried pickles, cooked to perfection. The long, thick, whole okra is flawlessly breaded to a superb crisp. The local shrimp were lightly breaded accompanied by savory collard greens. This was probably one of the best meals I've ever had. If you are in the Charleston/Mt. Pleasant area, you don't wanna miss this place.

Safiyyah S.

Yelp
Shrimp and grits were the absolute best I've ever had in Charleston and that's saying ALOT! Shrimp was very tender not over cooked, lots of grits!! This place is amazing with kind staff.

Adam B.

Yelp
Our hotel was a few minutes down the street from this place and when I saw they were only open 4 hours a day, 5 days week, I figured they must be pretty good. After a morning of kayaking, we headed over to create some shrimp and grits bowls. I still struggle with what to add to apple pie grits, but that's neither here nor there. I went with jalapeno cheddar grits with caramelized onions, heirloom tomatoes, local shrimp, and a green tomato bacon jam. Of my goodness, what an amazing combination. The tomatoes were so ripe, the onions added the sweetness, there was the slightest hint of heat from the jalapeno, and the shrimp were maybe the freshest I could remember eating. I think if anything I would have added some bacon just for a little extra meat and flavor! I like that they have a small counter and you can watch them prepare your dish. And they have a variety of iced teas and lemonade as well as alcohol, along with outdoor seating. I'm not a grits lover, but if I'm back in Charleston, this is one of the few places I would absolutely return to. Definitely try this!

Ginger L.

Yelp
I don't understand how this isn't a thing yet. I have been to more build your own bowl style eateries than anything else in the last 10 years, and nothing has ever compared. I certainly have never seen grits be offered as the base of the bowl. I have been missing out on so much. The grits were undeniably perfect. And the topping options were varied and cooked super well. It was a hefty lunch and I still nearly completed it. I loved how casual it was because you walk up and then they call your name when it's ready. The food was ready nearly minutes after we ordered, and it was definitely busy during that time. I cannot think of a single flaw and I am trying really hard to. My order in case anyone cares included the roasted red pepper grits, grilled chicken, and brussel sprouts. I also had to get a side of cheese fries because gouda. Literally gouda cheese fries. Top that, anyone ever anywhere, I dare you.

Brittany S.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this place! Hubby and I were in town for a wedding and this was right the corner from our hotel in Mount Pleasant! When we arrived this place was bustling with diners finishing their meals and we knew we were in for a treat. The staff was SO nice, walking us through the menu, and offering to allow us to taste anything before we ordered. We settled on build your own bowls to truly customize our experience at The Grit Counter - and it did not disappoint. My order - smoked Gouda grits, shrimp, collards, Brussel sprouts Hubby's order - jalapeño cheddar grits, fried oysters, collards, spinach Yum. Yum. Yum. Cannot wait to visit the Lowcountry again!

Enid E.

Yelp
Great food, service, and atmosphere! Many options to choose from for all types of appetites. Knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Mark S.

Yelp
Came here with a previous coworker of mine and he recommended this place. I rarely have grits so I was open minded in trying some. I ordered a custom bowl with plain grits, butterbeans and grilled corn and local grilled shrimp as the protein. For the sauce, I picked red eye tasso gravy. For someone who doesn't go out of his way to eat grits, I really liked it. The grits were very creamy and the gravy added some nice flavor. The grilled corn and butterbeans added a nice change of texture. The portion size is huge, I definitely needed a To go box and had the leftovers for dinner. Staff was very friendly and patient.

Earlene B.

Yelp
Nasty, no seasoning and expensive Even the tea was nasty. Customer Service was good.

Heidi R.

Yelp
Friendly and helpful with suggestions for my bowl. Price was reasonable and food was fresh and yummy

Mandee P.

Yelp
Yes, yes, yes, yes! I wish they had this place in Charlotte, NC. I can say I was completely blown away by this place. I got the Shrimp and Grits and have been dreaming of them ever since. I wish I had a picture to share but I was so hungry and once I got started I couldn't stop myself. Absolutely delicious! Best of all the kids menu was phenomenal and a much wider variety than I expected (especially because my 4 year olds don't appreciate grits - amateurs!). Everything was of a very generous portion and I was beyond stuffed. I can't wait for my next trip back to Charleston, even if only to get a few more bowls of grits. Check this place out if you want to take a trip to a happy grit wonderland full of deliciousness and bliss.

Monique G.

Yelp
You can't go wrong with shrimp and grits and these were some of the best grits I've ever had The lemonade was a little too sweet for my liking and that says a lot because I love sweet drinks -- not sure what kind of sweetener they used for their lemonade. It's a small place and gets busy fast. Waiting for food during a rush was not too bad

William H.

Yelp
The food is good. The service is great. Not a fan of the atmosphere here. Overall good place for lunch.

Joseph S.

Yelp
As my first time visiting here, I was surprised by just how many gourmet variations on grits they offered. We tried the shrimp and grits (good but nothing out of the ordinary), the fried chicken and collards grits (interesting and definitely out of the ordinary), and the fish stew (delicious but unfortunately only served as a small portion). Overall I definitely liked the fish stew the best which was surprising given the name of the restaurant being "The Grit Counter". Go figure

Stephanie M.

Yelp
This place is such an amazing staple in Charleston. If you are a grit lovedor never had them this place has everything your heart could desire. So many unique and well crafted grit bowl combination. And they have a build your own to even personalized your experience even more!

Carolyn A.

Yelp
Excellent food. I had a make your own bowl with roasted Brussels sprouts, grilled shrimp, grilled onions and a Brussels sprout pesto. No grits for me as I can't eat corn but my friend loved them.

Cheryl G.

Yelp
What can I say about The Grit Counter... shrimp n grits, fried shrimp, fried oysters, fried chicken and the list goes on. EVERYTHING SPOT ON!! Now to try the North Charleston sister

Glenn C.

Yelp
So good for lunch!! We had the classic shrimp and grits and the fried chicken grits for lunch. A little honey with the chicken made it so good, like chicken and waffles a bit. Chicken was crunchy outside even sitting atop the grits, and great flavor. Collard greens too. The place is bright, spacious, shiny and new with table, bar and outdoor seating. The menus were well done - I want to try the whole thing! If you've been looking at stopping in, dont wait anymore! Everyone working was funny and friendly, taking the time to check on our experience. And sitting at the bar, we got to see how fast everyone else's orders were filled. A great addition to Mt P.

Katie B.

Yelp
Staff was very friendly, restaurant was clean, had a nice lay out inside as well as additional outside seating. Now to the food...If you like grits you definitely need to try this place. So many different options from Signature bowls to make your own with different flavored grits. It was a tough choice but I got the Shrimp and Grits bowl and it is probably the best shrimp and grits I have had in a very long time. I will definitely be back to try another signature bowl soon.

Yelp
Stopped in 5-7-22 after walking The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge(yes, the entire R/T from the Mount Pleasant side!) Not much of a wait, food ready in a timely manner..Sat outside on the patio. Grits were awesome. Only complaints, not enough fried oysters in the basket entrée(but they were tasty) and the fries were just so so(my fault, should have asked for a substitute side) Recommended!

Yelp
Stopped in on my way to the airport and was so very pleased. I wish there was something as good as this in Texas. Loved the service. Get the ice cream sandwiches if they're on the menu!

Yelp
This is actually a 5 star establishment, everything is perfect and running so smoothly. The setting and ambiance are perfect. John who works here is one of my favorite service industry people ive met in chatleston recently. He was so helpful and considerate with our dietary restrictions and really went above and beyond. If you like grits, come here asap. Also love the way they have free tea and lemonade with your meal!

Yelp
We came to this establishment while on vacation a couple months back. I still have dreams about their spicy chicken sandwich. It was soooooooo good and crispy. I don't know when I will be back in the area, but when I am......this will be my first stop to get one of those sandwiches.

Yelp
Beyond. Truly a level above. I built a custom grit bowl with a seafood focus. The flavors and combination of textures were fantastic and the portion size was generous. I didn't take the before photo, but ate until I was stuffed and there were a few bites left.

Yelp
With grits this freakin' delicious, who needs rice? Listen up, Charleston. Do not sleep on The Grit Counter, a hidden gem in the 843. As our final meal in town, I have to say it might have been my favorite. The Shrimp N Grits Bowl was worth waiting for. Hell, it would've been worth standing out in the rain for. Locally owned and operated by the same folks next door at Grace & Grit. Personally, I've never been, but based on the reviews it's a smash with locale. Thanks to my colleague Scotty C. and his epic photograph of his custom bowl, I told my family we were going here. All of the bowls, I repeat, all of them sounded fantastic. But, I eventually caved in once I realized I hadn't eaten proper Shrimp N Grits during my vacation. Also, the (assumed) owner said to me, "best Shrimp N Grits in Charleston" when tinkering back and forth. Sold. Smoked Gouda Grits Local Shrimp Peppers Onions Scallions Tasso Ham Red Eye Gravy Comfort food coma in a bowl. The shrimp were delicate. The red eye gravy rich, and popped in my mouth. The cheese grits? Oh my freakin' god. Smooth as the other side of the pillow. Creamy, and oozing with precious flavor. This was my type of Shrimp N Grits! Easily, I'd be here once a week. It's affordable, it's casual, and it's relatively quick. The attention to detail and the flavors executed exceed the simplistic ambiance. That's a compliment, because the talent from the chef/chefs is out of this world. Unbelievable lunch!

Yelp
Wow! I've had shrimp & grits every way imaginable but this was unimaginably delicious! I chose the peach grits with butter beans, brussel sprouts, a sinfully Gouda mornay sauce topped with shrimp. Mind blowing. HUGE portions. The staff was so kind & let us sample some of the different flavored grits like an ice cream shop. Plenty of parking, indoor & outdoor seating. Far far exceeded my expectations!!
