The Groove Review - Fenway - Boston - The Infatuation

"We weren’t around back then, but we imagine that, with vinyl on the turntable, lava lamps in the corners, and an abundance of weed, the ’70s were the golden age of hanging out in basements. The Groove, a cocktail lounge inside of Hojoko, isn’t in a basement (in fact, it’s got wide windows that open up directly onto Boylston), but a ’70s basement is exactly what it feels like in the best way possible. There are cream-colored lamps, overlapping rugs, bead curtains, and yes, a turntable - though sometimes there’s live music. If you’re hungry, there are small bites and snacks to go with the cocktails, like nachos topped with torched hamachi, and you also have the option of ordering off the main Hojoko menu." - Dan Secatore

This place is small, yet delightful. There's inside and outside seating. We visited on a Monday afternoon and were pleased with our experience. The food was fresh, well presented and the server friendly. She kept our drinks filled and made sure we had everything we needed. My toddler is picky about his eggs and doesn't really like pancakes, but he loved the eggs, pancakes and fruit. My husband and I had steak and eggs Benedict and it was delicious (comes with two eggs Benedict, pictured is only 1). My daughter loved her Tropical Dream smoothie. We will definitely return when we're in the area again.

Went to this little hidden spot for the first time a couple weeks ago. Was solo for brunch and sat at the counter. Did wait a little for them to get to me, and when I let one of the servers know I was ready to order, she said that she needed to take another table’s order first. Which I thought was a bit odd since I had arrived before the folks at that table. And since it was just me, I figured she’d quickly just take my order. But alas, I was mistaken. Her response through me off a bit but I, tried not to take it personal and ordered when she came and the food was great. Aside from the server’s response, it was a pleasant experience and I enjoyed the food. Updated my review because we’ve been several times since and again the groove hadn’t disappointed. Added pics of a to-go steak and eggs Benedict.

Looked kinda sketch when we pulled up. In the front of an industrial park. Best food we have eaten on our trip to Austin/San Marcos! Would HIGHLY recommend 🤩

Google
This place is such a gem! I was drawn to it because of the high reviews and proximity to me and man...was I impressed! I visited on a busy Sunday morning and was provided with quick and friendly service. The food was fresh and beautifully served! Our server Delaney kept our drinks topped off and gave wonderful recommendations. I had the best BLT I've ever tried! It was so savory and filling. I thoroughly enjoyed my food and experience at the Groove, I wish there were more of them!

Google
I've been waiting for this place to open. It's close to my house and I love Thai food. I stopped by today for lunch, this was their first day open. I was not disappointed. Everything was delicious and the service was great. I look forward to trying more of their menu. A lot of very healthy choices here.

Google

Google
Tried this place out for the first time today with my mom and we both LOVED it! Super cool atmosphere, extremely friendly and helpful service, and the food was absolutely delicious!!! We will both DEFINITELY be going back!

Google
Delicious fresh food. If you don’t know it’s there you’ll probably miss this gem like we did for the last year +. So glad we finally stopped by. Had the Cobb salad and pesto chicken sandwich with a side salad. No complaints at all.

Yelp
Before the gun show in San Marcos we wanted to stop by somewhere to grab I bite to eat. I wanted to try somewhere healthy since I was on a diet and stumbled upon this hole in the wall. Once we arrived, it was easy to find since it was in the corner and parking was decent. Once we stepped inside, we were quickly greeted, received our menu's and seated. I ended up ordering the Garden Bowl with added Chicken and a Steak & Egg Taco. And my girlfriend ordered the Carnitas Benedict. Everything tasted amazing and the service was great! I highly recommend this place!

Yelp
My wonderful spouse suggested this place, and we got the carnitas Benedict, the vegan taco, and the bacon, egg, and cheese taco. To top it off, I got a cup of coffee and a blueberry muffin (since they they were out of the cinnamon streusel). I got it to go, but inside, the ambiance was lovely, perfect for meeting friends for brunch. There is likewise a lovely patio, although fence notwithstanding, the restaurant *is* on a highway. The carnitas Benedict were amazing, blending the runny goodness of a poached egg with the smokey pork goodness of carnitas. The bacon, egg, and cheese taco was just what it announces and tasty. The vegan taco of black beans, potato, and cilantro was also very good. The blueberry muffin was great because it had a wonderful creamy sweetness balanced against the slight tartness of the blueberries. I at it a day after we bought it and it was still wonderfully moist. The coffee was also solid. All told, delicious breakfast.

Yelp
I hadn't been here since the previous owner (who was also health focused) and a couple prices had me raising one eyebrow just a bit. We came. We ate. We loved it. I would absolutely go back and order any of our selections again without benefit of the $5 off $20 coupon which had me push this option this weekend. I only have a pic of my removed half of the carnitas benedict but they were plated so lovely even as a to-go order. I gave Mr R all the jalapeños, squeezed the lime evenly over everything, and took a little over half the hollandaise. While I ate my share in quiet reverence, I completely understood the rather embarrassing noises Mr R was making over his half. The carnitas were so juicy, tender, everything you'd want. The egg was perfect runny lovely, the potatoes tender and seasoned, the sauce was the golden point of rich but not overbearing. The vegan taco was balanced and zesty, satisfying all but the most belligerent ketos. The bacon/egg/cheese was indulgent without overdoing the cheese, and evenly distributed the ingredients throughout. The salsa (you get one shot per taco) should have had more heat according to Mr R but I found it a fascinating middle ground between red and green and with a thicker consistency than is often found. It enhanced the taco without overwhelming any of the flavors, and I loved that. Mr R's $6 blueberry muffin (selected as a tempting airport-friendly snack to bring along the next day) got sampled that night with desserts from other places and yeah, I'd pay six bucks again for that giant, properly baked, not dry, fruity piece of art. That was a muffin for two. Mr R said the staff were very cooperative and considerate.

Yelp
This was our first visit to this local joint. We came in for lunch on a Saturday and I ordered the Rueben with a side salad. My wife ordered the BLT. To set the stage, we had been running errands on a hot and humid Texas day (90 degrees in May). We were hungry. We both got teas to drink. The food arrived reasonably quick. No complaints. The salad was fresh. The ranch dressing was little more runny than I prefer but the taste was fine. Once again, no complaints. The staff were nice and attentive. There were 3 other tables besides ours. The Rueben worked. There was a good portion of meat. Overall this was a nice experience. I recommend it!

Dustin S.

Yelp
Great little cafe ! Wish it was open longer. Service was attentive and not overbearing. Food was good. Breakfast sandwich for the win. There should be more places like this.

Ronnie S.

Yelp
Loved this place! Had a late breakfast on a Tuesday morning. Food and service were exceptional. Food matched the menu description, delicious. Service was attentive and not overbearing. Highly recommend The Groove.

Yelp
Working in area my colleague and I wanted something light for lunch and found this place through Yelp and it's a surprising gem. Housed in what looks like an industrial site, inside is a cute little restaurant with lovely, friendly servers. They focus on simple and healthier dishes that are very competitively priced! Had a simple but delicious berry salad with walnuts and goats cheese which was delicious and came with a tangy dressing! Also had a side of their pasta salad which was loaded with a great pesto flavor! Loved the setting, food and friendly atmosphere!

Yelp
Yelp did us another solid for lunch today. This little gem is a home run. Let me start by saying, trendy and flavorful. A wonderful combination. We tried the the following. 1. Philly Cheese cake 2. Garden Bowl 2. Avocado Benedict. The Philly cheesesteak was delicious but the highlight was the Avocado Benedict with a side of potatoes. Talk about Devine. Other worldly goodness. The potatoes are the best I've had. The Garden Bowl was tasty. It was served warm which through me off as I thought I was ordering a salad. This place is a must try. I'm usually in town for a conference once or twice a year and you can bet on me coming back, sooner rather than later. I believe I heard the staff mention they will open for dinner on the weekends soon. Mouth watering thinking about what soon to be goodness they will infuse into San Marcos. 6 stars!

Yelp
Excellent food in a retro throwback setting. Service is pleasant and efficient. Delicious baked goods too.

Yelp
We enjoyed the groovy breakfast plate. Everything was cooked to perfection love that the potatoes had a little bit of spice to them. The restaurant was very pretty too!

Yelp
Love this great little spot in San Marcos. Great Food, great retro-vibe, staff is young and engaged... Our new Breakfast and Lunch spot for great tasting quality breakfast and lunch. Vanilla Latte was very good, Steak and Egg Benedict was just right and the grilled red potatoes were awesome. Groovy Breakfast Special was spot on. Check out their menu...

Yelp
First time here. Looked for a breakfast/brunch spot near the San Marcos Premium Outlets and Google suggested this place. As you turn into the parking lot, looks like you are going to an auto repair shop. When you go inside, it is a nice, quaint eatery. Our server, Maddie, was very sweet. They were playing 80s music from a large speaker with lights on it. Almost looked like a jukebox. Food was good, too. Thanks for the suggestion Google!

Mary K.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem!! Loved the ambiance, very nice vibes, friendly staff, great service! Great coffee! Had the Steak n Eggs Benedict, it was so good and done so well. My companions had the Strawberry and Creme French Toast, that was the best French Toast ever!! Will definitely be back! Highly recommended this restaurant!
google avatar

myklyn b.

Yelp
Definitely recommend getting breakfast here! The strawberries and cream French toast was amazing and definitely could have shared the plate, ordered a side of bacon and it was cooked to perfection! My husband got a breakfast taco and he loved it! The service was great! Our server I believe was Maggie and she was sweet and took good care of us! 10/10

Yelp
First of all, the food is excellent. Absolutely no issues there. Staff is very courteous as well. I give them 3 stars because of the guilt trip tipping where they flip the screen around and request a tip. Not a fan of this at all. If I stand up to order and pick up my food then no tip is deserved IMO so I didn't. At least you go through this rigamarole after you have your order.

Yelp
So... I'm pretty conflicted as I write this. Let me start by saying that what I'm eating right now, IS tasty... BUT, it's definitely not as described on the menu. I ordered to-go from inside the store. I got the Garden Bowl and added steak. I will say, it was my assumption, given the listed ingredients, that this was served cold. It is not. It is a warm bowl, which is fine but ultimately not what I was looking for. The steak is more like a thin flank steak, but it is seasoned well and is tender. It's good. I asked for my bowl to have no red peppers and it was prepared correctly. So what's wrong? Well, I'm missing the quinoa, I'm missing the chickpeas, I'm missing the sesame seeds. Half the ingredients are warm and half are cold (the onion, avocado and cucumber). It came with a dressing to put on there... I'm just not sure what is going on here. The sautéed Arugula is weird and to be honest some of the ingredients seem frozen and canned. This dish, with big pieces of charred broccoli, and corn and blistered tomatoes, that had been chilled, with the freshness of everything else being cold and the dressing, would be amazing. What I received fell really really short. And while the steak was good, I would expect about two more slices for +6 dollars I paid to add on. That made this an almost $20 for a incomplete dish. All this to say, I will go back and give them another try. My daughter got a meal replacement shake and she said it was really good.

Yelp
I was visiting the area and needed a quick bite. I stopped here to place a pickup order. The server who took my order was nice enough. I ordered the chicken pesto sandwich and it comes with chips. The food took about 15 minutes to come out. Overall it was a good sandwich that has lots of flavor. I substituted chip for potato. The potatoes were good. They weren't seasoned well but with ketchup and hot sauce , it's alright. The only issue I had was the workers were a little absent and my food came out and sat for about 5-10 additional minutes. No one was available so it just sat there.

Yelp
I came a little bit later around 12ish the place is small and has a very calm atmosphere. Ordered the Pesto Sandwich and a kids Pancake for my sister. Pancake was pretty good size for a kids plate, the pesto sandwich had tons of flavor. The service was simple and easy, you order at the front and sit yourself and grab your own drink (unless it's a soda or tea etc.) They were also very helpful with ordering the meal prep options, which tasted VERY great. I had the Hawaiian Beef Bowl, and BBQ Chicken bowl. Overall great experience, food tasted great, and service was good. Will definitely be back

Yelp
My husband and I eat breakfast/brunch here several times each month. We love to patron local restaurants and find The Groove is perfect for a casual meal. Service is friendly.

Yelp
Took the day off to hang with my mom, and we stopped in to grab a bite and oh man am I glad we did!! The place is to cute! The diner style atmosphere was relaxing and fun to be in. We ordered at the bar and then just took a seat. We both had the avocado Toast Benedict. So yummy! You could tell they really took the time to put it all together with fresh ingredients! We will definitely be back to try some more yummy food!

Theresa B.

Yelp
Excellent food and service! Really great place! Best juicy chicken pesto sandwich ever!!

S L.

Yelp
Nice place for fresh food. Family run restaurant. Friendly staff - can be noisy if a-lot of people inside. Small yet nicely done inside and they have patio seating albeit on a fairly busy road
google avatar

Letty G.

Yelp
The service was awful. We waited for about 2 hours and they never served us. How long does it take to make breakfast? It's now lunch and I was still waiting. I left...never ever again!

Sarah K.

Yelp
The wait was very short, and the French Toast was great. We tried the banana one and the berry one. The caramelization on the banana was super crisp without being burnt, just like the top of good crème brûlée. The smoothie we tried was okay, but the brunch fare was definitely more worth it. The prices were good for sit down, and the service was fast.

Connie V.

Yelp
So I recently tried their brunch with my boyfriend and was so impressed I absolutely had to try their dinners options, boy was I even more excited when on my ride home all I could do was smell the amazing aromas coming from the bags. Their meat loaf definitely hits the craving when you want something that tastes like home and their salmon crostini app is awesome! Oh and the food was done quickly! I will definitely be coming back
google avatar

Yelp
Great, cozy small spot which has been several different eateries over the past few year. The Groove is the best one yet. Great coffee and breakfast spot. Will also try lunch soon.

Maria Resa W.

Yelp
Nice folks. Menu has some good choices. Chicken was a bit tough. Seating can be a challenge but works with the space. Nice to have such a place on Hunter Road

Yelp
Wife & I had breakfast here on a Sunday morning. The inside is really cute with a great vibe and there is an outside patio with several picnic tables. For those of you who have eaten at the previous restaurants that operated out of this location, I think you will pleasantly surprised by the ambiance - it's a nice step up! The wife & I both ordered the breakfast sandwich & an Americano. The Americano was solid. At first I thought the breakfast sandwich was a bit pricey at $11, but when it was served it was pretty large and came with potatoes. The sandwich was really tasty with fried egg, spinach, tomato, cheese & a chipotle mayo. The potatoes stoled the show! There were the multi-colored fingerling type & appeared to have been slightly smashed & cooked on the grill with diced onions & bell peppers. So delicious! Service was pleasant and prompt - I'll definitely be back.

Jason A.

Yelp
Our new favorite brunch spot in San Marcos! Stopped by here while driving through. We shared the steak and eggs Benedict and the corned beef hash. Everything was delicious and went well together. Perfectly seasoned. We'll be coming back to try other menu items for sure. Decor is nice and staff is courteous.

Susan R.

Yelp
I had their chicken pesto sandwich. Very good. Their pasta salad though, absolutely delicious! Cute place to have lunch.

Mary N.

Yelp
Amazing food, great service, fun ambience! Healthy delicious and wish there was one in San Antonio. We would go every day! :)
google avatar

Kathe L.

Yelp
What a hidden treasure! I had the chicken pesto sandwich and my husband had the Philly cheese steak. Both were extremely fresh. My sandwich was full of veggies, chicken cooked to perfection. The location is sweet with both picnic tables outside and comfy furniture inside. They have a diverse menu with something for everyone, including lots of smoothies, muffins and daily specials.

Priscilla V.

Yelp
Love this place. The ambiance is cool and laid back. The servers are super sweet and friendly and make you feel right at home. The food is really tasty and made to order. They have weekly specials that are always worth trying out. I never leave disappointed. Everyone works as a team to make sure you have a pleasant experience. If you haven't already, go check out The Groove!

Jim F.

Yelp
Based on reviews my party dropped in for lunch. Place was nowhere near crowded. First impression, the place would be classified a "Dive" from Guy's show.. Tables and counter are bare bones, seats and stools are rock hard. We sat and did not get a drink Oder for 15 minutes. Didn't get drinks for another 20. Another 5 minutes for food order, followed by another 15 for food to be served. BLT WAS ON THICK, hard toast. Bacon was ok. Chicken dumpling soup was ok, with excellent broth, but dumplings were tasteless hard golf ball sized flour balls. Carrots were thick cut and good. Grilled chicken wrap was ok, but didn't like the jalapeño Mayo sauce. Server was sweet.

Yelp
This place has great food and is one of the only "healthy" places to eat in San Marcos. However, the service is absolutely terrible. I frequently order to-go and it never takes very long, but my boyfriend and I came to eat inside this morning and were there for almost 2 hours. Our server came to our table twice- once to get our food order and once to drop off the smoothies. My boyfriend and I were both servers for 4+ years and are VERY patient, but after everything was all said and done it took over an hour to get our food. What really frustrated me was that people ordering to-go orders were walking in and getting their food and leaving within 20 minutes while we just sat there with empty glasses and no food. Once we got it, the food was delicious as always and they comped the smoothies which was nice. I really love the concept of this place and appreciate the large, healthy menu, but the service needs to improve drastically.

Sydney L.

Yelp
Snobby service, Food was good but very expensive for what you're actually getting. Ambiance is different compared to the rest of San Marcos, This place would thrive in downtown Austin. Definitely a place to try but wouldn't return, maybe have employees smile (:

Amy C.

Yelp
Okay this place is a secret gem!!!! The service amazing, the food- well let's just I took my father from out to state here and he said that the chef needs to be recognized because it was one of the best breakfasts he has ever had. The salmon lox Benedict on a bagel, with capers was sooo good. The salmon was definitely fresh. And lastly if you don't try one of their red velvet muffins, you haven't lived. One bite and my taste buds went to baked goods heaven!!! The place is small but we went on a nice quiet Sunday morning and just gave great bohemian feels. So I know where I am going for now on to get myself some good food for now.

Juan A.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, relaxing, great food, service, and good coffee. A nice place to have brunch.

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
Service, food and ambiance were great. The servers are super nice, food was great. We ordered the salmon Benedict, French toast and kids meal and all look and tested great. Fresh ingredients, good presentation and on time. My kid ordered a strawberry banana shake and was delish also they had great music playing

Dave G.

Yelp
Small roadside retro place. Currently BYOB. Pop art on the walls. Had chicken pesto sandwich. Healthy and tasty. Out of the way, but close to big San Marcos outlet mall.
google avatar

Karen C.

Yelp
Unassuming, almost invisible exterior BUT excellent food, well prepared. Jason is an excellent host/server/cashier. This will be one of new regular spots for breakfast and lunch. Love it!

Olivia N.

Yelp
Name accurately represents the vibe. Food is amazing and there are options for everyone. The staff was extremely nice and welcomed us right as we walked in.

Sam Y.

Yelp
Excellent food. Great place to eat. Easy to order takeout to eat that night. Service is great.

Eric H.

Yelp
We go there often to have lunch and really enjoy the food. Every time we go there we order different meals and have not been disappointed. Last time it was the Buddha Bowl and Avocado Toast Benedict. Delicious try it

Bud T.

Yelp
Great food and service. Prices very good. I have had breakfast here twice and am taking home

Shilough C.

Yelp
The young gentleman behind the counter was so nice! Service was fast, the food was great, and the team you have is super friendly. Definitely recommend for breakfast! Will be back to try lunch.

Maddy W.

Yelp
Had the best service and best time at the groove! Meg is an amazing barista and we had the best steak and eggs Benedict :) definitely will be coming back here for healthy fresh food and the nicest workers!

Melissa M.

Yelp
Outstanding food. Friendly service. Best breakfast in San Marcos. Meal prep offerings are solid as well. Go, you'll be happy you did.

Azil P.

Yelp
We always like to find small local joints to try out the food. This one did not disappoint. Emily was our server and she was wonderful. The decor and atmosphere are very chill. We had the hummus to start. It was, hands down, the best hummus I've ever had. It was a garlic hummus with pistachios on top. We both had the fruit salad and soup. The salad was a delicious, refreshing bowl of spinach, blueberries, Strawberries and raspberries. Topped with goat cheese and candied walnuts. But the best part was the homemade raspberry vinaigrette. Lastly, was the chicken and dumplings broth. Immediately I noticed that the chef took the time to slightly sear the chicken before putting it in the soup. They always say you eat with your eyes first. Next the dumplings were homemade, not biscuits from a can. Even though it was a hot, July afternoon the soup went down well. Incredible flavor. What a great place. I'm so glad we stopped.

Dominique L.

Yelp
this place is the cutest!!! the service was amazing, meg made the most amazing coffee and she was the kindest and most helpful barista ever!!! the food was great too, cant wait to come back :)
