Best Cheese Restaurants in Austin | Eater Austin

"The wine bar mini-chain with four locations throughout the city — this one in Westlake and the others in downtown, Lakeway, and Cedar Park — makes its very east to nosh on cheese boards with wines. The fig and apricot chutney is a favorite with guests. Takeout orders can be placed online; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in services." - Darcie Duttweiler

This restaurant has some of the best views. The food - Noodles and Tejas Bowl were pretty good. The cheese pizza can definitely be better. Vegetarian options are lesser compared to other Italian restaurants. Will definitely visit again.

Excellent service. Crab cakes are so fresh and tasty and bruschetta beautifully done! Don’t cere much for the pizza but so many other great things on the menu that they do well.

The Grove Restaurant offers a solid dining experience with a menu that features some standout dishes. The burgers are juicy and well-seasoned, making them a top choice. And they come with fries. The pizzas are also worth trying—crispy crust and fresh toppings create a satisfying meal. I was particularly impressed with the chicken Alfredo, which comes with delicious bread that’s perfect for soaking up the rich sauce. The atmosphere is inviting, and service is generally attentive. Overall, The Grove is a great spot for a casual meal with friends or family!

Google
The Grove offers fantastic views from the open restaurant. We ordered Calamari and Shrimps for starters and Pizza for entree and all the dishes were delicious. My only feedback was that I had informed that it was my wife's birthday both at time of booking as well as when we reached at the reception. However none of this was passed to server.. it would have been good to make her feel a little special. So the personalised touch was lost.

My dear friend rose and I had lunch on Monday on the patio. Our server Hannah S was absolutely phenomenal. She is so cute and personable, please ask for her next time you dine here she won’t disappoint!!

We went there for galentines. View was good and the seating area was comfortable. However, the service was not good. Their electronic system seemed to be down; our order couldn't be taken. We had to repeat multiple times on what we wanted. Food came promptly. I ordered the salmon toast. The salmon was very salty and hard. I would not recommend. After eating, they rushed to collect our plates as well. My friend was not done eating and drinking her coffee and was rushed twice. Additionally, they didn't have many options for tea; only hot or iced tea. Overall, other than the view, there wasn't much for me to return to.

Large panoramic windows with beautiful views, delicious wine, and great service. I liked everything here. Highly recommend!

I think the important thing about the grove to understand is it reminds me of South Padre Island like you have to know what to order and it's great and if you don't, you can kind of get left in the weeds. Gluten free pizza and the gf options hit well. Grilled mahi tacos on corn great Wine flights awesome View outside killer Service mid but I only say that because it's a little bit slow, but it allows you to enjoy conversation so for the in a big hurry people stop being jerks - pulling up the place like its fast food but as a local here and in the Bea Cave area / lakeway we should all be here a bit more ;) chad

Yelp
They have improved quite a bit since the last visit a few years back. The Stacked and Smashed burger was very good. Great sauce, and nice soft brioche bun with two slices of cheese. Grilled onions as well. Very satisfying and well balanced. Service was excellent.

Yelp
The wine and view were great! The staff was sweet and took great care of us. In terms of the food, I think we got some okay things but I feel like it would have been better if we tried something else. The board and crab cake were okay and if you just want small bits it was a good first time try. Going back though in terms of food I'd probably try something else. Yelp
In all the years I have worked in Austin and passed by this building - I was not aware of this restaurant until a colleague recommended it today! We sat on the outside patio and enjoyed the absolutely stunning views! Despite being in the 90s it felt very pleasant on the deck. We shared the bruschetta appetizer which allows you to pick 3 combinations off their list of about 8, we chose mushroom which was my favorite, a Brie apple and a salmon and each was a perfect bite. Then we had the tuna poke bowl - it was delicious but more of a ceviche than a poke as the acid in the dish had pretty much cooked the tuna! It tasted fantastic however and was a nice light dish. Service was spotty however - our sever was initially on top of things but was a bit weird and a very close talked which was not comfortable! www had to wait an extortionate amount of turn to pay and had to flag down help several times in order to pay ! He never turned back up so another staff member finally took our payment so we could get going. That was unfortunate!

Yelp
My wife and I visit the Grove a couple times per month. Their food is always consistent and their service is always fantastic. We often bring friends and family who visit Austin to this specific location in Lakeway because of the great service consistent food and wonderful view. We appreciate how the Grove can accommodate gluten-free diets. They have many options that are gluten-free, including desserts. We often enjoy the flatbreads as an appetizer as well as the brussels sprouts. They have a nice wine flight menu and they provide descriptions of each wine when they serve the flight. We do wish they had a premium selection of wine flights such as reserve Cabernets from Napa as an option. Hopefully they will include some premium flight options soon. You can't go wrong with any of the food items at the Grove. They have one of the best smash burgers in Austin, and their salads and dinner items are delicious. Latley we've been sitting outside and our server has been incredible with taking care of us. The servers name is Ozan and he has waited on us about 3 times over the past month. He is super friendly and makes sure to take great care of us! The dining atmosphere in the main eating area is very nice with a great view backdrop looking over Lakeway. We really enjoy sitting outside overlooking the hilltop views. The Grove also has a very nice bar with a great wine selection and beer on tap. Highly recommend for consistent good food, nice wine selection, great service and great atmosphere!

Yelp
My wife and I had a date night at The Grove in Lakeway. Beautiful restaurant, great views of the hills in the back of the restaurant. Service was outstanding tonight. Food and drinks came out quick. We ended up doing three appetizers and a pizza... Barbacoa nachos, Brussels sprouts, shrimp bisque and the meat lovers pizza. The Barbacoa nachos were very dissappointing. The flavor was super bland. They served 6 chips with the fixings on top. These can be improved upon a ton. Everything else was amazing! The Brussels sprouts alone were incredible! Great flavor, good amount served. Pizza was spot on. I'd get it again. My wife said the shrimp bisque was also very good. Overall, we had a great experience!

Yelp
Update 02-11-2024 Our last stop at The Grove - Lakeway was not very pleasant. We were in Lakeway again this week, and decided to give them another shot... A marked improvement from our last visit. Elliott waited on us at the bar and did a fantastic job. Thank you, sir! The drinks were very good, Bombay martini ... made just right. On the food side of things, we started with a new menu item: Tempura Japanese Eggplant. Very tasty, very good, delivered piping hot! The batter on the eggplant was thin and crispy, the eggplant itself delicious. Served on a bed of miso vinegarette and sweet chili Thai sauce, garnished with a little green onion and togarashi spice. Our only issue with the dish is that the fried eggplant was placed on top of the two sauces. So, for the first two or three pieces of eggplant, you cannot reach the sauces. And, by the time we got to the bottom of the plate, the pieces of eggplant were soggy on the bottom. Suggestion: Put the sauces in a small dish on the side for dipping. That would work wonderfully! Next up... the beet salad. We have had that before, and its simply a delicious salad. Red, gold and candy-stripe beets, mixed greens, green apple, mandarin orange slices, spiced candied pecans, goat cheese with a citrus vinegarette balsamic dressing. Super fresh ingredients, served in an ice-cold plate ... fun to eat too, as you "unpack" the salad as you eat. Very good! We went in a totally different direction for us on the next dish... oven roasted meat balls. The meatballs were full of flavor, well cooked. The san marzano marinara had a little heat in it, with a generous bit of parmesan cheese sprinkled across the top... toasted focaccia present to soak up the sauce was a great touch. Much better visit this time, reflected in the higher star rating. Recommend The Grove - Lakeway when you are in the area.

Yelp
My husband and I have come here a couple of times now, we live in the area. The food is good and quite flavorful. A must order is their bruschetta - it is absolutely delicious especially pairing with their wines. Their entrees are a generous portion and quite good; some of our favourites include the Tuna Salad and Capellini Pasta.

Yelp
excellent quslity, huge portions and fair prices! Super tasty lunch special and combos with zesty shrimp bisque soup which was super tasty on its own.

Yelp
Adan was the best server ever. Excellent food and fantastic view on the patio. The food almost matched the service. Adan was very helpful in navigating the menu and seemed to really love his job! He knew the history of the place, and all his recommendations were spot on. Three types of bruschetta for an appetizer was genius. The halibut was cooked to perfection in a flavorful curry. The chicken parmesan special should be added to the menu permanently. The upside pineapple cake was a surprising delight. Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
So many things you could improve! Sat at the bar table for 20 plus minutes. We were not even offered water, let alone menus Fun fact. No real mamanagement!!!! We have overlooked sooo many things through the almost,10 years we lived close. We saw soooo much "bad bebehavior" on the side of ststaff, but also patriots. Food is ok plus, prices, presumptuous! The true staff is almost ALWAYS Amazing!!! The management is super "NOT!!!! I would rather drive to Carv!! Pay double and call it a night!!!

Yelp
The view for a party of two is beautiful. There are two tables with this undisrupted hill country view. My partner and I got a Sunday sitter and wanted to have a boozy brunch date and somehow this is where we ended up. We were greeted with a smile. Staff here are friendly! But can be slow to come back to check on you, we ordered some cocktails and a ceviche. The tajin tortilla chips are great and really enhance the ceviche. My partner wanted bacon instead of chicken with his French toast and that was very possible. Steak salad was fine. Nothing to write home about but No Complaints. If you're looking for a view, check out the coffee shop next door!

Yelp
The views were really nice from this restaurant which is why we chose this location over the westlake location. We were gifted a gift card for this restaurant so we were up to give it a try. The prices here are really expensive IMO for the quality of the food. Food: The appetizers were amazing! We did the bruschetta with the fig, the option with the pistachio, and the mushroom one. These were absolutely delicious! We also ordered the tuna appetizer which was amazing. I recommend you stick to the appetizers. We ordered the only vegetarian pasta that was there and it was not good. All we tasted was lemon and it was nothing great. I added a bunch of Parmesan to reduce the lemon flavor so I could eat it because I was hungry. My hubby ate it with an expression on his face that looked like a toddler being forced to eat his veggies lol I don't see myself visiting this location again.

Yelp
HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Went there for the view but was blown away by their food. David, our waiter was so welcoming and friendly. We truly enjoyed every minute of our dinner.

Yelp
How have I not written a review about The Grove!? I guess I've been too busy in the moment enjoying my meal and company to remember. I've been to The Grove in Lakeway several times since moving to the area less than a year ago. They have such an extensive menu, which can sometimes mean they aren't great at anything, but I can tell you that is not the case here! It's got something for any dietary need. Every single item we have ordered has been a hit. My friend said that the chicken tortilla soup was the best he'd ever had. All of the varieties of bruschetta are awesome. The cocktails are delish. I'm telling you, you can't go wrong with any of your choices at The Grove Lakeway. I almost forgot to mention the VIEW! You get an incredible view of the valley from any seat in the house.

Yelp
We dined here after an appointment across the street. The reviews were high so I was excited to check out the place. The view is amazing!! That was the highlight. The Cuban press was lacking flavor. There seemed to be a lot of things going on in the sandwich but nothing was good about it. The homemade chips were also bland, nothing to rave about. A little salt might help. We split the dishes and I appreciated the kitchen dividing everything in half for us. The Vodka sauce in the pasta had no seasoning but the salty Blackened Chicken made the dish. The focaccia bread was dry. The waiter was great. He gave us a lot of suggestions and was patient. Overall, I was disappointed in the food, expecting a 4.3 star experience. The ambiance and view were 4.5 stars easily.

Yelp
Gorgeous views from their spacious patio. Friendly staff. Chill but professional / clean / friendly environment. Tasty food. All around a lovely lunch out!
google avatar

Kristy S.

Yelp
We dined on the patio-- it was hot but they had the fans blasting. It was dark outside so we couldn't see much of the view but what I saw was the golfing putt putt greens and some building but nothing lovely at all. The staff was friendly and nice. They let us stay late to enjoy ourselves bc we came late at 9pm (kitchen and bar last call is 9:45pm). Food was really good. I had the curry halibut and shared the ceviche (big slices instead of chunks) and the brussel sprouts. You must get the sprouts! The wine was ok. We enjoyed our evening there.

Yelp
Cool location, decent food, great views. Service was spotty at times but the young man was lovely. I could have done without the pretentious children at the hostess stand. That was an immediate turn off and if I wasn't with a larger group, I might have left and taken my business elsewhere.
google avatar

Summer P.

Yelp
I live right behind The Grove and I'm so glad I do! The food is great and they have a very large gluten/dairy free selection. I LOVE the crab cakes and the new tempura eggplant is amazing.
google avatar

Hilary G.

Yelp
We used their event space for a rehearsal dinner. The food and wine are delicious. The room isn't bad, but my inlaws decorated it for us. I'd say the room needs some decoration. We fit about 24 people in the space, I think. It opens into a balcony. The communication before the event could've been a little bit better, and the parking was tough for so many cars (along with other patrons). This spot was convenient for us (distance and price) while still looking nice and having tasty food.
google avatar

Allison C.

Yelp
I am not sure why I keep coming here hoping to enjoy it, but I just can't any more. I used to love this place. The food and the service are not what it used to be. Today I was served curdled soup with a grilled cheese. I asked for bacon in the grilled cheese and the bacon is undercooked, so it's rubbery. I complained to the server and he said other people have ordered it and loved it! I am sorry they don't realize they are eating curdled soup, but I do! Then to replace the soup, I was offered a Caesar salad. It came out with brown lettuce and the dressing has so much anchovy taste it made me concerned it was curdled too! Absolutely not worth the view.
google avatar

Yelp
This location of the Grove is doing great. I love the patio and the staff is friendly and professional which is getting trickier in Lakeway as places are short handed. Food specials are particularly good so check the chalkboard. A very nice wine selection!
google avatar

Rayanne C.

Yelp
This place is cool. The view is awesome. And the server gave us some great wine recommendations which is precisely why we were there. The unfortunate part here was the kitchen. Starting with appetizers, the calamari wasn't good. Then dinner I ordered the steak and it was under the first time. Over the second time. And I gave up after. The service and wine was good but the food left a lot to be desired.
google avatar

Patty S.

Yelp
It's about to get chilly with this review. Put on a sweater. The view is nice. That's about the only nice thing I have to say. This dinner experience was a great learning experience to my kids of what not to do as a server. First, the server came out complaining that he was so bored since he'd been out on the patio and he's been very slow. We got our initial drinks and a wine bottle for us. We asked if he had a decanter and he didn't know if they had one. At a wine bar, but ok. We asked him what was good on the menu and we got a whole lot of nothing..... I've only been here for 3 months, they've changed the menu, blah blah blah. The food was not good. The calamari was bland. The sauce was chunky, and not in a good way. Their charcuterie board was a mess. They threw together a few meats and then in the center was grapes, strawberries, olives and peanuts. These were all mixed together. Not sure about you, but I don't love mustard on my grapes. And then you have cheap peanuts, not even some cashews or walnuts. The pizza was inedible. My teenage sons wouldn't even eat it the next morning. Our server was very busy talking to the other staff with his back to us., so my husband had to get up to get his attention. Then he proceeds to talk about how bored everyone is and how the hostesses are playing some video game. All the food pretty much was not paced so we had to put our pizza and burger on a different table because there wasn't enough room. The only redeeming factor for me was the burger. I didn't think it was bad but my husband wasn't a fan. We literally downed our wine because we didn't want to be there for another second. We asked for a pizza box. Our server had to ask someone else for it and then we hear a female staff member comment snarkily that sure, for the two bucks an hhour she gets, she will get him his box. He didn't offer to help us put the pizza in the box and just stood there and watched us. It was very sad. We asked why there were so many cars in the lot since there weren't many patrons. He responded that staff was parking in those spaces. That's a great business model.... To make your clientele walk longer to get inside. As we were walking out, we watched as the hostesses and two other guys behind a counter were sitting on their phones. This restaurant underscores what is seriously wrong right now with people that have no pride in themselves or don't make an effort to do well. This is 100 percent a manager's fault that staff are not trained and expectations aren't laid out for them. You can tell no one gives a crap and it was reflected in our tip, which was overly generous for the service we got.
google avatar

Tamara F.

Yelp
Michelle, the manager, is the best if you want to have a private event here. She helped us with our son's rehearsal dinner, which turned out fantastic! The view, the food, and the servers were all top-notch. I cannot thank her and her staff enough. Choose The Grove for your event and ask for Michelle!
google avatar

Magdalene L.

Yelp
Such a beautiful spot. We ate here after we eloped and it was perfect. We had a very attentive server who made sure our drinks and bellies were constantly full. The menu has such a large variety and plenty of gluten free and dairy free options to choose from. We started with the burrata, which i highly recommend, there's a lot of different options there as well. I had the Texas Gulf Redfish and it was absolutely delicious, I finished every last bite. I'm not usually a big grits fan, but I really liked the smoked gouda grits that come with the plate. Everyone was satisfied with their meals. We ended the night with Amys Mexican Vanilla ice cream. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Candy T.

Yelp
Great view even on a foggy day. Got to try their Brussels sprouts, nicely roasted and great ingredients selection - almonds & potatoes, that way you can still get some protein and more filling bites.
google avatar

Rich M.

Yelp
The Grove has a great selection of healthy food choices and wine. The wait staff is always very friendly. We usually sit outside when the weather is nice - highly recommend.

Kayla C.

Yelp
Best wine bar with the BEST service. We enjoyed everything about our experience. From the excellent wine and bites to the best team taking care of us. Carlee was so attentive and went above and beyond for us! 20/10 we will be back- and we will make sure Carlee is there when we do!
google avatar

George S.

Yelp
We went to the Grove at Lakeway for an early dinner. We had the good fortune to sit by the windows overlooking the Hill Country. Our Waiter was truly outstanding. He has waited on us several times in the last few months. I can describe him In two words "Contagious Enthusiasm". My wife ordered the beet salad, and I ordered two appetizers. The eggplant tempera and fried oysters. This meal was wonderful. This made for an enjoyable afternoon. We will definitely be back as this is now our "Go To" place in Lakeway.
google avatar

Alex Z.

Yelp
The wine selection in this place is incredible, a very large selection at a decent price. Buy bottle is definitely worthy if you know what you like, but if you are not sure, try their wine flights they are all less than $20 for 3 glasses of very decent pour. Have a cheese plate to go with it won't go wrong. Service is top notch, the waitress is super friendly. There are some flies around and one got into the drink, they came and replaced it. The view is very nice of the hill country. Reservation recommended, it gets busy at dinner time. The food on the other hand was a bit disappointing, at least for my plate. I had the meatball spaghetti and sauce was alright but the meatball was cold inside.
google avatar

Julia K.

Yelp
Came here with my husband last night and we walked in not expecting much based off mixed reviews. However, we were pleasantly surprised at the wonderful experience and food that we had. Our waitress Cori gave us such great recommendations on what to try. Everything she picked for us knocked it out of the park. We had the bruschetta and Brussel sprouts for appetizers, flounder and bolognese for entrees, and the pineapple upside down cake for dessert (which was AMAZING). Oh and can't forget the wine flight. The ambiance was super inviting and warm and the place has such a beautiful view of the hill country. Definitely recommend this place to anyone in the area and I would highly suggest you ask for Cori!
google avatar

Keshante A.

Yelp
Beautiful views and delicious food! The wine flight is an amazing value, I couldn't even finish them all. We had the bruschetta, it was so, so good and fresh. . The meat lovers pizza was fantastic as well. Service was friendly and attentive. I don't live near Lakeway but I would definitely come back to this location!
google avatar

Amanda H.

Yelp
Great place to grab lunch or happy hour. The pizzas and bruschetta are really good! Not a fan of the Caesar salad here but other salads are good. Beautiful patio for outside dining. Will be back for sure!

Roe B.

Yelp
Food and drinks were very good. Service was excellent. Ambiance was loud but cozy! I'd go there again if I lived in Austin.
google avatar

Mindy L.

Yelp
We had an amazing girl's night at the Grove in Lakeway. Cori was an attentive and friendly server with a solid knowledge of wine. She had great recommendations from the menu and the food and desserts were delicious. Pineapple upside down cake all the way!

Edward L.

Yelp
One of our favorite places. Our server, Adan provided the best service! Sat on the patio and enjoyed a beer in the breeze.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was great, Adan took great care of us! The lunch special was amazing, and we enjoyed our time.

Yelp
Came here for a big family dinner last week and we had such an awesome dinner. Even with our large party, we had excellent and efficient service. The view of the hills made for gorgeous ambiance, though it was a bit more casual inside than I was expecting. Food was delicious, drinks were good. I did the Cabernet flight-you get some good pour sizes and very affordable! All delicious. My husband and I each got a different salad: the Cesar was yummy and tangy, the wedge was fresh, creamy, and flavorful-both large portions but we love a huge salad (they come in large and small size, but the small is still a great portion). For our dinner we got a few different pizzas and man were they good! I think our favorite was the Italian sausage and mushroom, but also delicious were the BBQ chicken, meat lovers, and wine lovers! The pizzas were HUGE-we definitely ordered way too much, but it was great for leftovers. Overall highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Brunch with a bottle of bubbles at The Grove is always one of my favs! Usually I go to the West 6th location, but it was a gorgeous day for a drive out to the hill country. Staff was on point as usual. Started with the Sunrise Pizza Flatbread and just had to try the Spicy Asian Noodles after we smelled it from a nearby table. It did not disappoint. What I love about The Grove as well is that without asking they always split the meals into separate plates for you. Definitely recommend this location if it's a pretty day and you want some views with yummy food!

Miranda S.

Yelp
I love The Grove! I had the Cuban Press and it was amazing. Our server, Adan, was so kind and knowledgeable about the menu and even gave us a dessert on the house. I will definitely be back!

Bailey R.

Yelp
Adan was phenomenal :) The food came out so quickly and the service was great! Adan created the perfect atmosphere for our girls day.
google avatar

Courtney R.

Yelp
Love the patio ambiance...my waitresses were so nice and attentive. Food was pretty good...I had the crab cake, and the pan seared chicken spinach and potatoes. I like less breading on my crab cake this had a cornbread taste to it...not my fav. Lol more crab less bread please! I will return though to try more food and wine! Great for date night for sure!

William F.

Yelp
Food is okay. Wines are mediocre. Not a fan. I will dine elsewhere. View in Lakeway is impressive.
google avatar

Helen R.

Yelp
We didn't really get to see the waiter that much, I feel like she should have been more attentive. We ordered some drinks but I wasn't a huge fan and neither were the other people at the table. The food on the other hand was pretty good. I do not recommend the calamari because we got more fried batter than calamari. Overall the experience was not that great but it wasn't the worst experience. I also want to add that I'm adding the third star because of the view in the patio which is covered in case there is bad weather.

Alexa S.

Yelp
This is a great location. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The food is delicious. I love the view from outside the restaurant.

Jan N.

Yelp
One our favorite places to eat in the area, great views for lunch. Very conscientious wait staff, delicious grilled cheese sandwiches. Fabulous pineapple upside-down cake. The one negative is the one-piece plastic chairs, which seem more like patio furniture. They are shaped with a recessed area in the seat, which leaves a high, sharp, and uncomfortable area for legs. I am an average sized female, and my legs aren't long enough to be able for my feet to rest on the floor without feeling the uncomfortable chair edge cutting into the back of my legs. It is also very clattery and loud when fully occupied. However, we keep going back for the consistent quality of our food, and the lovely and relaxing vista.

Linda M.

Yelp
Anytime we have Adan as our server, we know we will get the best service! He is super easy to talk to and the kindest.

Yelp
Love this wine bar and restaurant. Being in the wine industry I can tell you they have great and unique wines. The food has been great too. Service is where I dock a star only because it can be improved upon, 4 stars is still great. Open parking lot, plenty of room. Reservations suggested. Heaters available on patio. Restrooms are clean Service: can be slow/forgetful but otherwise kind and a positive experience Wine recommendations White - flight 4 Red - flight 9 Food recommendations: - shishito peppers - spicy - scallops - tuna tartare (fishier flavor than some) - halibut is delicious with a green curry - pizzas are good, if you like blue cheese and prosciutto choose this! - bruschetta is good but the Brie, Apple and fig jam was amazing - I'd even suggest getting your whole plate with that one as not to fight over it ;)
