"Rainy, with a Chance of Gumballs Taking just the 'right' wrong turn on a visit to Pike Place Market can land you in Post Alley, where spearmint, wild cherry, and tropical punch bubble gum drizzles down the window panes and grape, peppermint, and lemon ice gum-cicles form from sills. It may be one of the lesser-known Seattle tourist attractions, but it certainly makes a big impression with plenty of chaotic color on a rainy day. And if you're a gum chewer, be prepared to stick a drop of your own favorite flavor to leave a colorful mark on the city."

The Gum Wall in Post Alley is one of the weirdest (and most oddly popular) spots in Seattle. It’s literally a brick wall covered in chewed gum — yeah, kinda gross, but also super colorful and surprisingly artsy. People have been sticking their gum here for years, and it’s become this funky little photo op near Pike Place Market.

Google
If you’re visiting Seattle, you’ve got to check out The Gum Wall at Pike Place Market. It’s weird, kind of gross, totally quirky, and somehow mesmerizing. Tucked into Post Alley, this colorful wall of chewed gum has become one of the city’s most iconic spots. It’s like urban art meets candy chaos. It’s definitely one of those “only in Seattle” experiences which you have to see for yourself.

This place is so popular and I don’t know why. It’s really gross but people loved adding gum and taking pictures. I tried to walk down the alley without touching anything. I have no desire to ever come back.

Disgustingly Amazing. Who would have thought that chewed gum plastered across the entire wall, hanging from pipes and window sills would make for a colourful spectacle attracting tourists from all over the world, itching to contribute to the art piece themselves? I read up about it and it says that the City had the wall cleared out and cleaned a few years ago but owing to public fame and the history, the wall ended up getting redecorated, gum by gum. Visit once, take photos, maybe even contribute to the community art piece, and definitely enjoy the market around.

Google
It was very interesting to see the wall. A bit grotesque but get accustomed to seeing it over time. Not sure if i have enjoyed the experience but was something I had never experienced nonetheless. Lots of places to take a picture and seems like it had been growing year over year. Perhaps would be good to visit in the future to see how much it has grown

Google
Sure, it looks good in photos but in reality, it's was a dim (yes, part of it during daytime), dank alley filled with chewed up bubble gum. The ground had lots too so it was very sticky to walk in the area. Surrounding restaurants smelled musty and slightly moldy inside too. One of the places you'd be curious to see once and then never again.

Personally the thought of chewing gum and placing it on a wall full of bacteria doesn’t sound fun but I wanted to do this with our teen girls and it was a good time. They sell .25 gum at the coffee shop on the strip. Cute for photos.

We came to check it out based on recommendations, but it’s really just something you walk past—no need to stay long. Personally, I found it to be the most unpleasant spot I visited in Seattle. There’s a strange smell, and if you’re sensitive to odors, it could make you feel nauseous.

Yelp
As chewy as always! A Seattle treasure everyone has to visit at least once. Just visit it before you eat!

Yelp
I must say, Bubble Gum Alley was a little underwhelming when I got there. When I first saw it on TikTok, it kind of gave grand (possibly due to exceptional videography skills), however, my initial thought was just "oh, this is it". But, nonetheless, it was a unique experience that photographs well.

Yelp
Gaaaaaahh! Ewww! [Seattle WA] Revisited Pike Place in Seattle and this was my first time seeing the Gum Wall on Post Alley near Pike Street. We couldn't find the brick wall the first time we were here in 2015. Although seeing it was gross and is probably not for everyone, I've actually seen worse - try visiting Bubblegum Alley in San Luis Obispo CA where a long narrow alley is covered in used chewing gum on BOTH sides of the walls. Try not to lose your balance while walking through it. This pedestrian-friendly street at the Post Alley is just below Pike Place Market and it is a wide street and probably not to everyone's "taste" (pun not intended) but it is worth seeing the colorful display, many stuck them in a ball, some stretched out hanging, and some were creative and carved their initials made of chewed gum. A popular germiest attraction landmark in Seattle worth checking out and maybe dropping one of your own. Review #3616

Yelp
Super small wall filled with gum. I expected more but none the less it was a cute photo op. Easy to find.

Yelp
This alley next to Pike Place Market is a unique area to walk through. At the same time, it is also very disgusting. I have been here so many times and have seen all sorts of colors of chewing gum on this wall. Some of the gum droops and others have paper or coins stuck in them. People will make small works of art like hearts with their gum. They get pretty creative with how they stick their gum to this wall. The Post Alley Gum Wall started in the 1990's when people would wait in line to see a show at the nearby improv theater company. Because they don't allow chewing gum inside the theater, patrons would stick their gum on the wall while waiting in line. It is an interesting story on how this tourist attraction started. They do from time to time clean the wall because the acidic properties of the gum damage the building's brick. But it doesn't take long for the gum to return. It is definitely worth a look at this hidden but famous piece of art if you are visiting Seattle.

Yelp
Just another experience scratched off, it was actually good to see that this is my 2nd gum wall I've experienced in 3 months.. Must be a trend

Yelp
Gum on a wall is a tourist attraction. It sounds like only something in Seattle. The Post Alley Gum Wall, located in Pike Place Market, certainly is and they're proud of it too. Looks gross but that's why it's cool. You certainly don't want to touch it, so just look. Colorful history. It got started in 1991 when Unexpected Productions began leasing the theater. There were patrons going into a show, and one stuck their gum wad on the wall. Also they put a penny on it. Soon others were copying this. A few years later the wall was covered. One person took all the pennies and left the gum. A few times officials removed the gum, but it kept coming back. They finally gave up on cleaning it off and it stayed. Chew and add more history to it. You just have to bring gum, and hand sanitizer. People like getting pictures in front of it. There's even been wedding photos by these crazy people. Has a colorful history about it literally. It's located in Pike Place Market. This is on the ground floor in the alley next to the theater.

Yelp
It's honestly disgusting how people just stick their gum on the walls. This is a tourist attraction. However, it's a place you must visit. Just try not to get near the walls and beware where you step. The city does clean up the gum wall but so check on social media before going if it's still up. However, the gum wall doesn't disappear for too long. Since people continue to stick their gum to start it again.

Yelp
Welp I came I saw and I Yelped lol Low key a disgusting but entertaining wall to come and visit when in town Definitely a must do lol Wear gloves and remember to start chewing gum
google avatar

Yelp
This was the coolest grossest thing ever! If you're in Seattle this is a must do, this alley is super unique and if you have gum on hand feel free to stick your work of art to the wall ;) There can be crowds depending on the time of day but still good photo ops and giggles! The alley is located right in front of Pike Market and is actually longer than I thought it would be. It's not just a wall! Def check it out!
google avatar

Elaine T.

Yelp
It's a wall fall of used gum. A ton of gum. Is it gross? For sure. Should you go see it? Absolutely. There's something about the way the sun or shade hits that makes it seem almost beautiful...or fascinating at least. Check it out.

Yelp
During our visit to Seattle last week, we were surprised to discover that the iconic gum wall had recently been scraped clean. I was disappointed not to be able to show my partner the wall in all its gooey glory. While one section still retained a thick layer of gum, most areas were sparsely covered, lacking the layered appearance it once had. Admittedly, the gum wall is an unusual attraction, often described as gross, and according to locals known to emit an unpleasant odor during the summer. Given its lack of hygiene, I can understand the decision to clean it. Interestingly, the gum wall's origins trace back about 30 years, when patrons of a local improv group began sticking quarters to the wall with gum as a way to tip the performers. Schoolchildren soon joined in, contributing gum (minus the coins), and thus this quirky yet iconic landmark was born. Check it out but don't expect it to be as impressive as it once was.

Yelp
We were kinda sad to hear that the gum wall was cleaned up the day before we visited. Guess we have to come back again. You still get the sticky icky feels walking through the alley even though it was only a small section of gum. Def a weird thing to be known for but it works.

Yelp
A Seattle and Pike Place classic. Last stopped by here five years ago, and it is incredible how much the gum wall has grown in the past years. Worth a fun, quick little stop to see it and take it all in.
google avatar

Elaine Y.

Yelp
You haven't been to Seattle if you haven't left your mark on the notorious bubblegum wall. Located right next to Pike market in Gum Alley. Remember to buy some gum, if you want to leave your mark. Otherwise, there's a gum ball machine further down the lane for $1 for a gum ball. Let me warn you, it is a gross wall. Due to the hot weather, you may even see the gum dripping off the walls. Gross but iconic and worth a visit and photo opt.

Yelp
EWW!! So I NORMALLY SONT RECOMMEND a place like this but... it is something interesting to see. Literally they have people's chewed up gum here and it's stuck in the walls forever! Tits traveling down the alley pretty quickly tho. I'm not too sure how much more walls will it cover, but it's beginning to cover half the alley. So did we do it? YUP! We sure did! it was disgusting! I think I have a photo of our gum placing. So it started off with stickers under the stairways. Eventually it becomes GUM GALORE!
google avatar

Linda J.

Yelp
I will not be a complete weirdo and give this place a 1. I do NOT see the point of this place. It's nasty. Lol. The posters and artwork are all demonic leading down to this place. Then you get gum all over the bottom of your shoes. I read the history of the coffee shop and the haunting and such, but I am allowed my opinion, and this place is NOT for me. I understand that this has become a rite of passage or ritual for some.... just know I added a Yelp mini mint and not gum on the wall. I am no follower .
google avatar

Nancy R.

Yelp
Definitely unique...disgusting but different. Just an ally full of prechewed gum from people from all over the world I wouldn't be surprised if that's where Covid started
google avatar

Yvette S.

Yelp
Well this is on most tourists list & check we did it...although you can't unsee it. Found right under the PIKE PLACE FISH spot under the Pike Place Market sign, down the stairs and to your left... The Post Alley gem of a gum wall. Yep you read that right GUM, a million (don't quote me) pieces of saliva filled chewed gum stuck to an alley wall for your picturesque selfies lol you gotta do it just once! It was bright during the day but unsure if it's lit at night. A fun experience & don't forget your GUM!
google avatar

Zhi H.

Yelp
The gum wall is one of the tourist destinations to check out as there are none like it. I've been checking it out over the years when I'm in the area and it's definitely changed. Changed in a way of more gum! It's spreading everywhere and it's a sight to see. It's definitely nice "art" and photo opportunities. Not very hygienic so be warned! Make sure to bring some gum and leave your mark here!
google avatar

Irene C.

Yelp
Unique spot. Great for a picture although I'd try not to touch :) not hard to find and a decent number of people there to take pictures. It's not too crowded though since everyone mostly passes through and you don't need to spend much time here. Stop by when you can.
google avatar

Stephanie E.

Yelp
Definitely something you have to see when you're in Seattle. It's everything you could imagine.. disgusting, artistic - unlike anything you've ever seen. It's a good background for pics (because of all the different colors of gums.. yuck), lol. I heard it started it the 1990's and just kept growing and growing...
google avatar

Shirley B.

Yelp
The famous gum wall is located right below Pike Place Market in downtown Seattle, the whole bilateral sides are covered with chewing gum, which is quiet interesting but also gross at the same time. I heard that it started around 1990s and now the gum thickness has accumulated to several inches. Apparently, they tried cleaning back in 2015, got rid of 1000kg of gums, but they were re-added almost immediately haha Since the gums are colorful, it does make a quiet nice backdrop for instagram photos, and my boyfriend did a pretty good job of taking them hehe. It's a nice tourist attraction, like an appetizer before actually delving into the market. But ew don't touch or lick them for your own sanitation sake
google avatar

Carrie M.

Yelp
The Gum Wall is conveniently located down the stairs from Pike Place Market. I must admit, the smell was slightly sickening. I did not contribute to the wall as I do not chew gum due to the fact that it contains sorbitol, which has a laxative effect. It's both gross and cool to look at. It's a nice photo op, but I scurried away after snapping a few quick pics of the wall as I was by myself and didn't have the gum for a cool bubble blowing photo.
google avatar

Nicole K.

Yelp
Recommend to stop by if you're already at Pike Place Market. It is pretty disgusting tbh but an experience. Didn't get to stick one on the wall this time but saw bunch of people do it.

Jeremy G.

Yelp
Hilarious and disturbing, disgusting, and wonderful all at the same time! Must visit if you are in Seattle and want to be amazed at the absurdity of this alley! One of the highlights of my trip to the PNW!
google avatar

Gagan G.

Yelp
Very unique attraction, you can stick your own gum on this and it's super fun. Pictures also come out really good! Would recommend!
google avatar

Melody C.

Yelp
Truly a fascinating sight for gum lovers and non-gum chewers alike. Singapore would probably faint at the sheer amount of gum in one place, given gum is banned over there. It's literally endless walls and walls of chewed gum. And it's not just simply gum -- gum tacked to notes on the wall, too. Though I didn't stick around for too long (after all, it's just gum), I still had a pleasant time here. It's worth coming over just to see something that you probably won't find anywhere else.
google avatar

Tina M.

Yelp
Tourist spot to check out while at Pike's Place market. Located downstairs in an alley way. It is pretty dark and a bit stinky. It is an alley after all. There are loads and loads of chewing gum stuck on the walls. Pretty cool to look at. I wouldn't touch the wall so I threw my gum at the wall and it bounced off lol. I saw others using a straw to stick their gum. Cool to check out but gross lol!
google avatar

Apple S.

Yelp
This is beyond disgusting and I don't see how this is even a tourist attraction. Enjoy the market and then go ruin your appetite by watching this alley full of gum.... I find it dumb
google avatar

Leah Y.

Yelp
Personally, I found this area EXTREMELY disgusting and felt my skin crawl. I think it's something you should see IF AND ONLY IF you happen to be in the area to say that you saw it, but overall it's just really gross.
google avatar

Francine L.

Yelp
I have seen my friends post photos of this infamous gum wall with them so I decided to check it out in real life. I guess a photo doesn't tell you the whole story. It is disturbing and gross, and honestly, I felt like I was getting dirty just walking through this alley. I didn't event want to stand close to the wall because I had a fear I would accidentally touch or somehow fall onto all of that gummy wall. Overall I can see why people like it but for me, I just wanted to leave right away!
google avatar

Chloe F.

Yelp
Cool tourist attraction that takes all of five minutes to see. I'm glad I went, didn't feel the need to linger, and probably wouldn't go back, but if you're already at the market it's a must see.
google avatar

Cassy B.

Yelp
It's not a wall of gum, it's a whole alley of gum!! It's gross. It's disgusting. It's germy. It's soooo cool! Pike Place Market was on my list but when I saw the gum wall I figured we should probably hit it while we're here. I'm so glad I did! It was packedddd on a Saturday afternoon but still worth it. I mean where else are you gonna see something like this? I especially loved the gum poles. People are just taking over the whole alley with gum. It's colorful, it's artistic. It's very very cool. My boyfriend and I left a little of our DNA here to join the crowd. It's a very cool experience and if you're in the area - why not?!?!

Stefanie R.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were forced to flee from New York to Seattle, from severe domestic violence and both felt incredibly homesick. So Pike place became our home away from home, due to it being the only spot in Seattle, with any diversity. As a new Yorker I missed seeing people from all different walks of life, not just of Scandanavian heritage(which is very prevalent here). It's awesome to go to Pike place and see everyone of every ethnicity, and then you have *horror music plays* the gum wall... It stinks like mint, and is probably the most grotesque thing, I have ever seen in my life. It's not even worth it, just go to the boardwalk, it's beautiful. This made me want to bust out a thing of bleach and start spraying the walls. Lol
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
This is just a fun and unique spot to stop at when in Seattle and near Pike Place Market. It's definitely a spot to get that 'gram. And you can also contribute to it.
google avatar

Ruby S.

Yelp
If you're facing Pike Place Fish Market, there's a sign leading downstairs on the left. Artsy and unsanitary. We're there less than five minutes tops. Lol!
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK OK. I understaaaaaaand that this is a big draw for tourists. I have been to Seattle a few times but only have just seen the wall in person on our most recent trip this past July. There is a reason why I avoided it for so long. I find everything about this wall SO disgusting. Germs and bodily fluids are a major 'ICK' factor for me, so walking down this alley was a bit of a hellish experience. And the smell!! An intensely sweet stench of acidic decaying bubble gum. Not my fav. For as gross as the whole thing is, I did get some great photos and it is a staple of the Seattle experience so go for it?
google avatar

Les R.

Yelp
This is one of those places I just had to check out. I heard about it on a visiting Seattle YouTube video and added it to the list. Pikes Place market is huge. I found it difficult to find the gum wall & alley but the easiest way I found to tell you how to find it is go down the small stairs just past or behind the Rachel the Pig sculpture pretty close to the fish tossing place (Pike Place Fish Market). It is the small staircase behind the pig and not the main one on the other side. At the bottom of the stairs turn right and go back into the market area and the Alley is on your left. It is something to see. Honestly I gaged a little from the sight and the smell of gum. It's not too bad, just that gum smell. I thought it was cool to check out and was a touristy think I had in my list while visiting Seattle.
google avatar

Jacqui C.

Yelp
One of my highlights during my trip to Seattle so far was visiting the Gum Wall on Post Alley, which is one of their many tourist traps. It may be disgusting to most, but to me, I thought it was pretty cool and worth visiting. You can find this wall inside Pike Place Market. At first I was going to have a hard time finding it because how huge the market is, but there was a sign with a flight of stairs that went directly to it. While exploring this colorful place of already chewed up gum by millions of people, I noticed that there was a marching band coming through. We ended up catching this marching band's performance at the right time. I would've added onto this wall and left behind my traces here, but sadly I didn't have any gum on me and I didn't even think of it. I caught a glimpse of the smell a couple of times, but me having a strong stomach, I didn't feel nauseous while going through this at all. Strongly recommend this landmark if you're visiting Pike Place Market!
google avatar

Nom F.

Yelp
It's pretty gross, to be honest, but it's a landmark. Since you're already at Pike Place, you might as well stop by and take some pictures.
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
The aesthetics The gum wall alley reminded you of one big sized classroom desk flipped upside down...lol #postalleygumwall
google avatar

Annabelle V.

Yelp
Another must visit "tourist" spot located around Pike Place Market! Located in an alley just a short walk from the market and is a quick attraction to visit! Definitely a busy spot! You will see many people chewing gum and sticking it next to countless other chewed gum balls!!! Definitely visit Ghost Alley coffee while visiting the gum wall!!! Fun fact the city of Seattle has to come once a year and clean off all the gum! Peep the photos for lots of used gum
google avatar

Joel H.

Yelp
It's gross. I feel bad for the people that have to work in the area, especially those that have to clean the windows of gum. But man, such a unique place. I've never experienced another place like this during all my travels. Don't think too deeply about this. You don't need to understand it. But if you are in Seattle, just do it. You'll have to dodge the gum and the Tik Tokers, but it is so disgustingly worth it.
google avatar

Anne D.

Yelp
Are you curious, afraid, or grossed out? People like to leave stuff behind when they travel. Could be simple or significant. I've left books in a Little Free Library when I was down in California. Some European cities have fences for love locks. In Seattle we have The Gum Wall. When I have friends or fam from out of town I bring them to The Market. I offer to bring them to the Gum Wall. The squirmy folks stay up top with Rachel the Pig. The bold and daring ones walk down with me to the alley. They get to contribute and add to a collection of colorful sticky wads of DNA from all around the world. Not too long ago someone made a gum face of former Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll. I wonder if it's still there? Weird, creative, bothersome, interesting. It's all in the eye of the beholder. Don't forget to pack gum on your trip to Seattle.
google avatar

Craig W.

Yelp
It's disgusting but you might as well see it. It's located right below the main sign to the market. The walls of the equally disgusting gum wall in SLO are closer together. So you have less chance of accidentally touching the walls here, which is good. I left my addition to the wall. That is all.
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
You think you know what to expect. And you kinda do. But then you kinda don't. It's interesting. But people putting up orange peels and other trash up with their gum kinda messes with the vibe. I felt sticky. The smell will always be in my nostrils. But I'm glad to say yup I've been there.
google avatar

Anna R.

Yelp
This is located below the Pike Place. There is a a certain smell in this alley...chewed bubble gum. Kind of disgusting but a great photo op. Just don't touch the wall! Lol
google avatar

Norman R.

Yelp
When in Seattle, Washington I highly recommend you visit the Gum Wall for its shear artistic yet creepy element from a medical point of view. People are chewing gum which is infused with their DNA ; and then applying it to a wall covered with gum from a million other mouths from unknown origins. And in some situations the gum bears fingerprints. From a artistic point-of-view, the wall is actual art created by everyone that visits, choosing their specific brand, color of gum, and location to make their contribution, which every-so-slightly adds to this ever changing work of art. Highly recommend visiting. Bring hand sanitizer!
