Went here for lunch with the family. Excellent service, great recommendations by the server. I wasn’t sure if I wanted grits or gumbo so I got the sampler. The cheesy grits were amazing! The gumbo however left a lot to desire, something about the broth just felt off. My son got the cheese burger and loved it, also love that they had sweet potato fries, really good! Also make sure to get the beignets, they make them fresh!

I had cheese grits and shrimp. Absolutely fabulous! I couldn’t eat but half, so dinner is ready for tonight.My husband had the fried shrimp and fries and slaw. The shrimp were gigantic and fresh. We both loved our meal and our waitress, Charlene, was so personable and helpful. We will be going back and will recommend this place to our friends.

Fantastic experience at Gumbo Diner! Daniel, Mr. Kevin, and Charlene are the BEST servers—friendly, attentive, and so helpful. We celebrated a birthday and they made it extra special. The food was amazing, especially the Restaurant Week menu. Highly recommend!

Best breakfast and BEST Gumbo on the Island. Daniel was the nicest and best server ever. The entire restaurant makes you feel right at home. Been there many times over the years never had a bad experience. Go don't miss out. They have something special going on there.

Gumbo Diner is one of those little *casual* Galveston spots that just feels right the moment you walk in. It’s small and cozy inside, with that classic diner charm and a good mix of locals and beach visitors. The staff is always kind, welcoming, and quick to take care of you, which makes the whole experience feel easy and relaxed. The food is exactly what you want when you are by the beach. The gumbo is rich, hearty, and full of flavor. You can taste that it’s made with love and fresh ingredients. The crab balls and po’boys are excellent too, and breakfast here is a hidden gem. Everything comes out hot, fresh, and seasoned perfectly. The best part might be the view. The diner sits right across from the beach, so you can look out at the water while you eat. It’s such a nice, simple pleasure that makes the meal feel special every time. It can get busy since it’s a local favorite, but it’s always worth the wait. The prices are fair, the service is great, and the atmosphere is pure Galveston charm. If you want good food, friendly people, and that perfect beach view, Gumbo Diner is the place to go.

Ok when you start a review with i wanted to eat the Green beans you know this hole in the wall is awesome! If you come to Galveston place this place at the top of the list / destination stop. I ordered the bourbon street platter and my wife ordered the fried shrimp platter. OMG the bacon wrapped shrimp were amazing. Then I ate the etoffee and the gumbo finished with the jambalaya. Noone eats green beans but you will at this place. Onions bacon and green beans who knew. The shrimp platter was exceptional - the fried shrimp was full of flavors. Next time we are here for a cruise we will be back.

I enjoyed the seafood gumbo. I didn't enjoy the crawfish Po Boy because I wasn't a fan of either sauce used in the sandwich. But there was a good amount of crawfish. Next time I will order my Po Boy dry and just use the Texas Pete from the table to give it some moisture and a little bit of heat. I also want to go back to try the seafood omelet. The service was great and I always enjoy looking out at the water when enjoying a meal.

New Years Day dinner with my wife. Did the expensive places last year (2 days ago). The Gumbo Diner was a perfect end to our holiday. The food was great. The service better. Looking forward to our next trip.

I came here with three of my friends for lunch on a Friday afternoon. We were able to get seated very quickly . We ordered the fried seafood platter the grilled fish platter, shrimp and grits with extra grits and a small salad. This was enough for a four of us. They had the best shrimp and grits I've ever had. It was topped with some kind of gravy and cheese. The shrimp was decent sized. The fish was well cooked and flaky. The ones that were fried were battered evenly and well. Some of the french fries were a bit soggy. I'm not a big spicy person, but their jacked up jalapeño was a good appetizer. It was battered well and didn't break apart when you cut it. Since we were doing family style, our waitress brought us as some extra sauces and plates and utensils . She was very sweet, very quick and have checked on us several times amazing service. The tables and chairs were stable and there's free parking out front . You could also see the ocean right across the street from the restaurant. It's a really good spot on the shore. Keep in mind they do not take reservation, but they can post events here . So if you plan to come and be a walk-in, I would expect this place to be busy on evenings and weekends.

For all the times I have been to Galveston, I have always eaten medioce food. I felt like the whole island was a tourist trap. However, on a recent visit, we were out here during the winter and on a weekday night. Most places closed at 9 pm, and it was already 8:30 pm. I always feel bad about coming so close to closing time, but we were starving! Upon entering, I always ask if it's too late, but they were welcoming even though I could see the staff doing prep work to wrap up for the night. We placed our orders quickly and the food came out just as fast! We had the large seafood gumbo, it was solid, but our least favorite dish. Next was the seafood sampler, fried, came with a huge piece of catfish, oysters, and shrimp. They use a cornmeal breading, and it was superb. My favorite were the shrimp. It came with fries and coleslaw. Their cocktail and tartar sauce were really good as well. And the star of the show was the crawfish etouffee. It was very rich and flavorful. We ended the meal with their fresh beignets, they are light and fluffy and warm. You can ask for a side of honey or syrup as well, but the powdered sugar was plenty sweet. The service was superb and we were out by 9 pm!

Love this place and love the service. It the last stop we make before heading home . The servers are always so happy to see people walk through the door. I've only ever had the shrimp and grits here and it's so good that's the only thing I'll get here. I e tried it at other places in Galveston and they don't compare. I also have found anything as good back home. I look forward to this dish every year!

Hard to describe, but a strong herb flavor at the end that lingers. -The pancakes were a bit too dense and doughy. Thick and fluffy would've been the perfect meal. I stopped by here a couple of days ago with my wife for dinner. We happened to be on the beach nearby when looking for a place to eat and my wife found The Gumbo Diner. When she called in the order they told us it would be ready in 5 to 10 minutes, which I thought was super fast. We arrived at the restaurant about 30 minutes later and the food was waiting to be picked up. Since I was only inside for a moment, I can't say I paid too much attention to the surroundings, but it did remind me of a classic diner. For dinner on this day, I decided to go with the crawfish etouffee. The menu described it as a traditional Cajun delight served with white rice. It was packaged into multiple containers, one for the etouffee, one for the rice, and one for the bread. I appreciated that, since it kept the bread from getting soggy and the rice from soaking up all the etouffee before we got home. After adding it all to a plate, I tried it and thought it was pretty good. The etouffee had plenty of crawfish meat, and the gravy had a nice flavor with a little bit of spice. Both my wife and my mother-in-law thought the shrimp and grits they had were pretty good as well. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I enjoyed my crawfish etouffee and thought the prices were reasonable too.

The best breakfast on the island. We eat here at least once per week. Usually breakfast,"OMG! The waffles!"YUMMM! The cheeseburgers are awesome also. I love their French fries. The service is excellent. Never disappoints. We consider the staff as family. We love them all. Cozy and comfortable. They never disappoint.

The good: Generous portion of crawfish in the etoufee. Good flavor. Staff was sweet. The not-so-good: My etoufee was barely warm. They brought my toddler's food several minutes after ours and we watched it sitting on the counter. My husband did not love the catfish because he said it was mushy and still had the "silver strip."

I ordered a chicken fried steak for delivery and found a roach next to my mashed potatoes. I don't remember ordering that.

This little diner is great. It's located on the Seawall and has a great menu. I was here before the breakfast crowd arrived. They have a traditional selection of breakfast items, from fluffy pancakes, Belgium waffles, chicken and waffles, omelettes and biscuits. I had the biscuit and gravy combo. It comes with 2 eggs, sausage or bacon, cheesy grits or hash browns. I opted for the bacon and cheesy grits. The biscuit wasn't large, but it was delicious. I really love the cheesy grits.

Charlene was nothing but amazing. Food was was amazing. Fresh, seasoned and perfect. Gumbo was close to home. We will definitely be back

Really good food. Breakfast all day. Great prices at a nice local diner on the beach. My wife's omelette was really good. I had a big beach breakfast, which was also really good. However, the pancake came out late and was a bit thick. Nice beach view if you sit in the right place.

My 2nd time here after many years, and the food was just as amazing as I remembered. Our waitress Charlene was extremely attentive and sweet! We shared the Bayou platter and it was a prefect size. Our favorite was the jambalaya and crawfish ettoufee

Let's begin with the environment, so welcoming and cute. You can see so much going on behind the scenes because it's pretty much an open layout, which is cool. The servers and service was AMAZING! The FOOOD!!!! Omg. AMAZING! I couldn't decide on what to order, so I went with the sampler and it was a great idea! Absolutely would visit again if I'm ever in Galveston again!

Stopped for breakfast the second morning in town bef9re cruising. Pancakes were thick and amazing. Service was spot on......a little loud but there were 2 larger groups in when we were there.

The staff was very friendly. Family type atmosphere. we had a big group and we all tried side things with no complaints

First time visiting here. Casual ambiance with quick service and friendly staff. Manager checks on customers. Something rarely seen nowadays and much appreciated. Sometimes small things mean so much. Clean but small establishment. Good waitress. Asked for a sample of the gumbo and I personally didn't like it because it tasted powdery so I ordered the junior cheeseburger with fries and sweet potato fries on the other order. Great burger and fries. Good sweet tea too. Stays busy even during the week. Seemed the staff all got along well with each other. I wanted to order the beignets but we've eaten so much these past few days that it's a shame. Next time... I recommend trying it out since they have great variety of food items. We will come back.

We were in Galveston for one night pre-cruise. My SIL was craving shrimp & grits. A Yelp search lead us to the Gumbo Diner. The menu offers lots of fried, blackened, and baked options as well as the shrimp and grits. Our table of five had shrimp and grits, a fried fish platter, a fried seafood platter, onion rings, and jacked up jalapeños. Everything was hot, fresh, and very tasty. Our server was very attentive. If your are looking for fancy, this is not your place. However if you want great food at a very reasonable price, the Gumbo Diner is your place!

Heard about this place and decided to give it a try. Since the name was Gumbo I wanted to give it a try. Had the seafood large bowl. Service was good. The gumbo rue was well done but the gumbo flavor was weak and toward tasteless. It had crab shrimp and peppers etc. the flavor seemed like li had cooked all day and just lost its freshness. That would be my guess. Also I am sure the person working over the stove liked it but it was cold in there. Take a coat. Off my list for the future.

The atmosphere was fun. Our server was pretty good for how busy they were. I ordered the catfish dinner and hubby ordered the plate that had a little of everything. For the most part, the food was good. The catfish was good, but a little bland. You couldn't eat the fries that came with it unless you like drinking grease, but overall I think the fish made up for it. The Hubs said his was good the étouffée was really great, but the gumbo was not. You would think a place with gumbo in the name would be better. Overall, I would eat here again and enjoy it. You can't have things perfect every single time.

In town on vacation. Have eaten here many times. But this time....the gumbo tasted burnt. It was full of okra but not of the proteins. On the other hand, the kids fish and fries was very fresh, hot and plentyful!!! We were charged $4 for a canned DrPepper! We were told the soda fountain machine was broken. (But $4!?!?!??!) Won't be going back.

We had a party of 7 people yesterday. The fried seafood platter was fried nicely. The oysters weren't overcooked. The etouffe was pretty good. Not super flavorful but nice flavor. 3 of us got the bourbon street platter and we all thought that a lot of the things were overwhelmingly salty. The green beans were sooo salty. The gumbo was salty too. The jambalaya was fine. The bacon wrapped shrimp were good. My mom got the chicken fried steak and it was a bit tough. Not our favorite. Our server was also not very friendly. He seemed annoyed. We would ask for things and then he'd have kind of rude responses. He kind of threw down the straws for us which we thought was strange. He seemed especially rude to my mom for some reason. Most likely won't be back based on the service.

We stopped here after a day at the beach after searching for a casual place. It's right across just about from pleasure pier and it's kind of small but it is a diner so that's expected. We ordered the lil daddy gumbo which was huge and coming from a New Orleanian, was tasty with a rich dark brown roux. We also ordered the half and half shrimp/oyster po boy which came dressed with cabbage, spicy mayo and pickles. It was a good size and the seafood tasted fresh. I ordered a Mac and cheese which was good, and my hubby got a Greek salad with blackened shrimp--it was fresh and delicious. We finished with an order of beignets which weren't exactly Nola style but we still gobbled them down. The service was great; our server Brandon was friendly, helpful and funny.

So to date within the last 2 months I have been here twice, came upon on it for a "quick" lunch and it was quick, very very tasty, good seasoning. Staff have been there for some time, and know recommendations and good offering if you tell them what you're looking for. When I'm down on the island and looking for a Cajun flavor definitely will try this place more often now. So many things to explore on their menu can't wait, w/o gaining 100lbs ;) Enjoy!

This was the first time my partner had Gumbo in his life, and though it was tasty, it was a little bit on the salty side, so we were not really able to finish it. The greek salad was good, and so was the platter (though the gumbo in the platter was even more salty than the Main course one). My favorite taste was the crawfish etoufee, which was absolutely brilliant and will go back just to get that! Service here is fantastic! They kept checking on us a d refilling our coffees. The place is on the small side, so a few people were waiting outside by the time we had finished.

Food, service and restaurant are always good. I took visitors there recently. All enjoyed it, even the kids.

The way me and my son was treated and it's his birthday is absolutely awful! As me and my son walked from across the street from the beach to have lunch a Caucasian woman seen us walking up & scurried in . As we got to the door it was LOCKED! The waitresses and cooks stood there staring at us . I said are you guys closed they completely ignored me while severing the white people in the diner. I guess it was funny to them to watch us at the door confused smh we walked to brick house down the street where we were treated like guest . D NOT EAT HERE !

The beignets were SOO good!!! I swear as soon as I walked in I was part of the family. Everyone was so kind! The seating area was rather small but everything was well kept and clean.

Friendly staff and great food. True diner feel inside with Gulf view. Some of the breakfast dishes are served all day. The best pancakes we have ever had. Will be back.

It was ok. The fish was fried good but too greasy. The service was nice and made sure we were good and did not need anything else. It reminded me of a dinner. It had music Playing.

This was a perfectly run restaurant. the food, service, an ambience was exceptionally rated. The owner came by and talked to us and the pricing was perfect.

This place is a hidden gem!!! Small, busy, but worth the wait. They move customers in and out at a steady pace. The chicken and waffles OMG!!!! The breading on the chicken was so fresh and crispy, and the waffles fluffier than a cotton ball. The rest of my party of 7 all enjoyed the delicious buttermilk pancakes that are a mile high tall. The link sausage here is 3x the size of your usual diner. Highly recommend!!

One of the employees at the hotel recommended this place and it was SO GOOD!!! We got the seafood gumbo the small one! When they brought it out we verified it was truly the small one. One order could've fed both of us with still some leftover. The man there (assuming owner) was truly a gem. He made sure everything was good and went out of his way several times to make sure we had everything we needed. We will definitely be back when we come in November. This time I'll be taking some home.

Every time we go here, we always say we should come more often. Their fried shrimp is just amazing. Some of the best gulf shrimp on the island. The chicken and waffles looked perfect. My other friend had the seafood platter and said it was some of the best cooked fish ever! Its not a fancy place, it's a diner. And man oh man is their food good. Our waitress was funny, attentive and we really enjoyed her. It was a fantastic lunch!

The food and service was well above par. If you like dark roux gumbo this is the place to go. You could taste the fresh seafood. Then the Beignets were the some of the best.

Wanted to try this place out and it is well priced and DELISH! I had the bourbon platter which had shrimp gumbo, seafood etouffee, bacon wrapped stuffed shrimp, crawfish sausage and chicken jambalaya and cajun green beans! Holy moly yum! My husband had the fish po'boy and fries which was MASSIVE!!! My son had breakfast and said it was delish. Service was impeccable! Food was amazing!!!! And it was a cute little diner look to it as well!

The staff was pleasant and courteous. The Resturant appeared clean and today. Our orders came out fairly quickly and certainly hot and freshly prepared. One of our members ordered the blackened fish. It was not desirable. It was exceedingly to salty. He had to scrape off the extraordinary amount of seasoning in order to try to consume it. Somebody please tell the kitchen. I've had breakfast here before with no issues.

From the host to waitstaff, friendly, helping each other, and wanting to serve the customer. Sam our waiter knew the menu, had eaten the food and gave great references. My husband and I both ordered shrimp and grits, Sam said it was the best a lot of regulars order all the time. Hot, fresh and needed nothing, the best grits we have ever had. Wish this place was in our home town. When back in Galveston will be our first stop! Thanks Sam!

I love the gumbo Diner, and I'll tell you why. It's absolutely the happiest staff in town.They all seem to enjoy being at work! Giiovanni, the manager, create's that and the friendly atmosphere, where no one a stranger! The food is excellently and quickly prepared, and always brought hot to the table. My wive likes the shrimp & grits, I tend to go for the chicken & waffles. The prices are reasonable & the portions are large enough to take some home....and that's hard to beat!

Service by Carmen and Martina- excellent. Rest of staff welcoming and friendly too. Sat a the bar, had a Pinot Grigio which complemented my delicious Crawfish etoufe. So good- that I order a second one for tomorrow. . The beignets are delicious too. Highly recommend!

Nice local spot, we were here on a Monday after school had started so the lack of crowds was a welcome change. Good selection of breakfast staples, and everything was fresh and had great flavor.

Decided spur of the moment to try this place out and I'm glad we did! It's got that "diner" feel and our waitress was really nice, and attentive. I got the shrimp po-boy with sweet potato fries. It was good but I wasn't a huge fan of their chipotle may on the po-boy but wanted to try it out. My husband for the fried platter and his catfish was really good and very hot. Kids got burgers and they had a good taste to them. We will definitely be back!

Phone tasted really good! It was our second visit here. We had a problem with one of our plates, but the manager went above and beyond to fix our issue. Waitress and the manager were both excellent. Thank you for your excellent service! 6/14/25

If you like classic diners, this is the place. And with a name like Gumbo Diner you wouldn't expect them to do breakfast but they do and it's wonderful.

After having breakfast at Waffle House down the road two days in a row we needed a change so we decided on The Gumbo Diner. I read mostly 5 star reviews so we figured it was a can't miss. Upon arrival we loved the small, yet cozy atmosphere. We waited a few minutes to be seated & placed our order of 3 Beignets, the Quick Eggs as well as the Seafood Omelet. Everything was served quickly & was very good ( except for the Omelet ) which was my fault because I didn't read closely enough that it contained Shrimp, which I'm not a fan of whatsoever so that wasn't the restaurants fault of course. Good food, great service & fair prices ( 2 entrees, one side & 2 beverages for $40.21 ) not to mention some nice views of the water make the Gumbo Diner a place we will gladly go back to when we find ourselves in Galveston again.
