The Gun, a laid-back Hackney pub since 1860, offers a lively vibe, craft cocktails, and inventive pub grub on its heated rooftop terrace.
"Exercising your right to exercise in the vicinity of your home is important at the moment. So if you’re around Hackney then it’s worth DMing Satsu at the Gun. It’s a wander away from Well Street Common and Victoria Park, and everything there - from a perfect mess of a double smash patty cheeseburger, to a deep-fried tofu sandwich - is good. If the crab katsu rice is on, get it. It’s a sloppy and sweet curry sauce with flecks of rich crab meat, spring onion, and coconut hints. It’s not the only thing you’ll ever eat on a park bench, but it’ll probably me amongst the best." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing
"Once an old boozer on Well Street but now a pub-cum-house party, The Gun is a pub for every type of east London head. It’s one of the few Hackney pubs that combines a DJ and blunt fringes with excellent food. Downstairs is often heaving, but head upstairs and you can sit with a bowl of steaming crab katsu rice, homemade five-spice tofu wontons, and more modern Chinese and Vietnamese-influenced dishes. Come summer, bagging a spot on their suntrap terrace is also a move." - Heidi Lauth Beasley, Jake Oliver, Sinead Cranna
"The Gun was an old boozer on Well Street that was spruced up a few years ago, and they’ve been doing excellent things ever since. The food is, as an old timer would say, a bit tarted up—and the roasts are all the better for it. Expect twists on the classics—think miso glazes and gravy. If the weather’s good you can sit out on their terrace, drink beside you, and tuck in. Because let’s face it, it’s always the right temperature for a roast." - Team Infatuation
"Exercising your right to sit outside when there is only the briefest glimmer of sunshine is something all Londoners born or adopted pick up naturally. So if you’re around Hackney then it’s worth heading to The Gun for their semi-secret sun trap terrace. The pub is a wander away from Well Street Common and Victoria Park, and everything from the changing residencies we’ve sampled tends to be very tasty. At the moment it’s Ling Ling’s, a Chinese-influenced pop-up." - Jake Oliver
"For all the tired moaning about East Londonification of things, now and then it really comes good. The Gun was an old boozer on Well Street that was spruced up a few years ago, and they’ve been doing excellent things ever since. The food is, as an old timer would say, a bit tarted-up—but the roasts are all the better for it. Bone marrow gravy or cheesy leeks add that little bit extra and the yorkshires are suitably gargantuan. If the weather’s good you can sit out on their terrace, drink beside you and tuck in. Because let’s face it, it’s always the right temperature for a roast." - Jake Missing
