The Halal Guys Expands to Michigan With Five Restaurant Locations - Eater Detroit

"The Halal Guys, a popular New York-based fast-casual restaurant chain known for its chicken and rice platters with white sauce, is planning to open five new locations in Southeast Michigan. The exact locations are yet to be confirmed, but the first outpost is expected to launch in 2018. The chain is notable for generating long lines ahead of openings, similar to Shake Shack, and aims to bring its recognized brand and unique offerings to an area with a rich presence of halal food options." - Brenna Houck

Spicy chicken platter is a must. Service is 5 stars thank you for making my night :) I very much recommend this place to anybody a meal for two is about $40-50. They let you dine in , lots of seating is available. Restrooms are available with a sink to wash your hands.

The last time I had Halal Guys before this was last January at the Manhattan cart. When I had it then, the food was dry and almost tasteless, not to mention pricey for what you got. This location on the other hand, had better food than the Manhattan cart in my opinion. The combo platter that I had at this spot wasn't dry and actually tasted good, much better than the Manhattan cart. For an extra charge, they'll even let you add things like baba ganoush and hummus to your food. The reason I took off a star was because the portion size of both rice and meat was on the smaller side, which I wouldn't have minded if the platter wasn't so expensive at $12. The combo gyro was almost $10 which is pretty insane as well. I haven't been to the Manhattan cart in a long time but I think this location might actually be more expensive than it, not to mention they don't seem to give as much food. Being from Queens, it might be the most money I ever spent on a combo platter. The falafel was pretty good, and so was the gyro from what I heard. The customer service was great and I didn't have to wait long for my food. Ultimately, I may come back here in the future if I'm in the area but living in Queens, I can get a combo platter of an equivalent quality and quantity for a few dollars less.

Google
This place is one of the best in terms of their service and you can tell that as soon as you walk in the door. Their food is delicious and they make sure to give you great portions. I loved this place and will definitely come back again.

Google
I was told this place was really good and when I walked in It had so much potential; Super clean and the customer service was GREATTT , the cookie was also really good. I wasn't a fan of the food 😫😢 I usually get lamb over rice but they don't sell lamb so I got their combo (Beef and chicken) the beef was too salty, didn't finish my food not sure I'd go back

Google
Was excited when I first saw that The Halal Guys were opening a new location in East Meadow. The place is brand spanking new exterior and interior. Very nicely designed. The staff were friendly and all wore hair nets and caps. That tells and shows me that this place is clean. The food however simply did not taste as good as the carts in Manhattan or at the 14st Manhattan location I frequent. The food overall was still solid and did its job. I will come back when I'm in the neighborhood.

Google
Greaaaat energy, and hospitable and friendly staff. Taha welcomed me when I entered the restaurant and remembered my order from the week earlier. The love he put into preparing my order was so apparent and the accompanying staff were nice and smiling too. Great, fresh , mouth watering food. I’d define recommend — 100%. I was visiting the city for a short trip, but will be back again whenever I’m back in city. Thank you!

Google
The google mentions they close at 10 pm. But, looks like actually starts the closing process at 9pm. If you are not ready to take customers after 9pm change the store hours to 9 pm. So people don’t drive from far and get a wrong vive.

Google
Probably the worst halal guy location. The worker was aggressive during our ordering experience. The food tastes greasy, which gave me a stomach issue. The store is cold af, they either don't have the heat, or don't want to turn on the AC. It's December! Smh. $40 for 2 combo platters, 1 soda, 1 fries. No complaints on the price, however, the portion has decreased.

Yelp
The last time I had The Halal Guys was when I was still living in Philly. From what I remember, their platters and sauces are like no other. I used to eat it every week. I was near this location the other day and decided to get it for lunch. I got here around 11:30 and was probably their first customer, the one and only gentleman there that took my order was so friendly and nice. He offered me samples of the meats and gave me recommendations as well as making sure my order was made to my liking. I got the combo platter, which consists of their new chicken shawarma and beef gyro. I was not disappointed, the rice, salad and meats with extra white sauce & a tiny bit of their super spicy red sauce was really good. I wasn't really a fan of the chicken shawarma, I prefer the regular chicken but the beef was flavorful and the yellow rice tasted better than my usual Halal spot. The price was reasonable ($13-regular size) and restaurant was very clean. Will definitely be back again for more Halal food.

Yelp
Solid spot for a quick fulfilling meal. I've eaten here a few times and the gyro platter has become the go-to given the robust flavors, quality of meat and overall serving size. Quick service and central location don't hurt either!

Yelp
Two simple reasons why I visit this location regularly. Best Halal and best service. I only wish Yelp would allow more stars on their review.
google avatar

Barry H.

Yelp
This place has some of the worst food you can ever try. And it's only surpassed by the horrible service.. I tried to order over the phone but they wouldn't take the order, so I came in and picked up the order after having to wait for it to be prepared. But let me tell you, I wish I had stayed away. And I guess that's the reason why the place was empty at 6:30 PM on a Friday night. I suppose other customers have figured out what I didn't know. But I know now.

Yelp
This was my first time in this location, sadly the chicken had no taste, I had a mango iced tea which was extremely sweet and I asked the ladies to please give me water, one of them was nice, the taller one was annoyed because she was the one who made the drink and she said she didn't add any sugar, she didn't know I do speak Spanish ! I honestly I wouldn't recommend or come back to this location.... We need not halal places with good quality with nice service

Yelp
I grabbed a quick lunch here with my mom after we saw the long lines at Texas Roadhouse. We shared a regular platter with chicken and beef gyro. The server was super generous with the sauce which is always a big plus when I'm getting halal food. The rice was especially well seasoned and perfectly chewy. Overall great value and delicious food!
google avatar

Yelp
My first choice and regularly, after the workout , you need nutritional value, delicious taste, crispy potatoes and fresh food as usual. For the hospitality service I need to give 10 not only 5 stars , for the generous guy there . He called Edison always on the time always Fresh

Yelp
Came in after the gym to get food for lunch. The establishment is extremely clean and from my understanding new to the area. The employee who helped us was extremely friendly and served up our food super fast. The food itself is super fresh as they cook the meat right in front of you and was also super tasty. Generous portions of rice, meat and veggies and a great serving of their white sauce. Typically after halal you'll feel bloated but here you don't feel that way (at least I didn't). The large platter is only a dollar more than the regular so why not right! I really enjoyed it and it's right next to my gym so I'll definitely be back. Would def recommend for someone looking for something fast and satisfying! I hope to try the falafel next time too!!

Yelp
What to eat at 2 in the morning? Getting in line on 6th Ave for the Halal Guys brings back so many memories. Fortunately, they have a brick and mortar store in Long Island. Ambience: this place has the "franchise" look. Change the color scheme and it could double as a Subway. It is clean (and much cleaner than the food carts in NYC). Food: similar to what you get in NYC, yet something is slightly off ... perhaps it's missing the street food "seasoning" aka car fumes. The protein portion sizes are noticeably smaller. Service: friendly like any other suburban fast food chain.
google avatar

Yelp
Maybe my memories of Halal Guys in midtown isn't as good as I remember but the brick and mortar spot in Long Island just doesn't measure up to the carts. The menu here is the standard halal fare but here they also have some unique drinks like flavored lemonades which I'm sure the carts don't have. The ubiquitous chicken and rice platter was decent - chicken was cooked well but chopped a bit small, rice was flavorful and salad was fresh. Flavors were a bit milder and bland than my memories but it wasn't bad. The white sauce here was a tad disappointing - it was too creamy and thick and not enough tang. The hot sauce however here is no joke - super hot but oh so good. If you can't take spice, be warned. Staff here is friendly and they work fast. Prices are a bit more expensive than the run of the mill halal spots (10 bucks) but it's not unreasonable given that you get a fair amount of food. Not bad but I think I'll stick to their carts in midtown.

Yelp
I was in Long Island and happened to see the halal Guys and had to stop by since I haven't had halal from Manhattan since the pandemic started. I ordered combo over rice place with pita bread. The employees there were so nice and will go back there. They packaged it well and notified me about a promotion going on and ended up buying another one.

Yelp
I've loved Chicken and Rice for over a decade now. I've driven to the city from Long Island just for a chicken platter many times when I was younger. I can't believe how much the halal guys have expanded from their cart on 53rd and 6th. Anyways, I can say for sure that the cart platter was way better. However, this branch is still a good place to get a fix. I could immediately tell their chicken was different... Larger? Darker? Something was different about it than what I vividly remembered. Still not bad, but just a warning that it is not entirely the same thing. Also, my rating was heavily influenced by our server (my receipt said Cyle W. He was working on 2/21 around 4pm). He neatly packed our platters and gave us a generous amount of chicken. Also perfect amount of sauces. Thank you Cyle!

Yelp
I have been a fan of Halal Guys since I worked in Midtown Manhattan and could look outside my office window and see the line wrapped around Avenue of the America's. I knew this place had to be worth it since then. I was first introduced to their LI location during a yelp event out East with new CM Jared. The hot sauce and white sauce are why you get addicted. I tried the falafel at the event and became a fan. Today I visited their East Meadow location and I am one happy camper. It's located in the shopping mall with Dollar Tree and Texas Roadhouse. I got to kill 2 birds with one stone and didn't have to eat the bird. You see what I did there ...... I was greeted by a woman who was working alone today. She handled the foot traffic really well and I like the COVID19 procedures put in place here with tape and areas that are taped off. I decided on falafel over salad with all the toppings. Jalapeño, green pepper, tomato. Two lines of hot sauce and plenty white. My salad bowl was soooooo delicious. I ate at 1:00 and it's now 5:00 and I'm pleasantly satisfied. Can't wait to visit again.

Yelp
Ya know what's great? Being right. It's even more fun to know you're right when your significant other thinks you're wrong. Herein lies the setup for Halal Guys as I finally took my female counterpart to this East Meadow location a few weeks back and the results were (at least) four stars, for her and me. And from that, I was right. What I mean is, when it comes to halal, my lady swears by Hamza and Madina. The food cart over in Queens is definitely a quality choice for eating up combo platters, but she just didn't really seem keen on trying any other spot, especially after I took my mother to Halal Guys in Farmingdale and she had mixed feelings on it (another Hamza snob). Though as soon as the meal was done, my girlfriend had a different line of thinking. I mean, it's tough to not love HG. That night, my combo platter of chicken and beef was delicious as always. Rice, lettuce, tomato, pita, and plenty of that good ol' creamy white sauce. I think that was a big piece to her new liking of Halal Guys (that and the beef). Unfortunately, the hot sauce did get to her (just from a few droplets) and she'll probably steer mostly clear of it next time. For me, I love a good line or two in there so it was just what I needed. What I didn't need were French fries. I mean, it was a nice addition to our meal through downloading their new app and getting it as a side for free (even if the employee had a little trouble entering this into her computer), but it wasn't something necessary to the halal experience. Don't get me wrong, they were crispy crinkle cuts that I did enjoy, but I probably wouldn't pay for/order them again. I'm also torn on that halal burrito, but if I end up with two close together trips, perhaps I'd give it a whirl. Overall, the most important thing is I was right...well, maybe it's actually that this Halal Guys is just as great as all the other ones. Prices are still somewhat higher than your food truck platter (like Hamza), but I'd say the quality makes up for it, somewhat. Regardless of the final amount of money you pay, Halal Guys will totally hit that halal craving you desire, and now my girlfriend knows that. I wonder what else I can convince her I'm right about...

Yelp
Had a very enjoyable evening here. This is a business worthy of critical acclaim. The staff is exceptional here. I had no idea what to order but mentioned I'm pescatarian and the server said,"Don't worry I got you" and that he did. He suggested the falafel with rice, lettuce, tomato, olives, jalapeños and offered peppers and onions ( I passed). A few pita slices some white sauce one pack of super "hot" sauce. It was delicious. The falafels were crunchy outside yet soft and fluffy inside. Come hungry.

Yelp
I was a Halal Guys virgin until tonight when I sampled their yummy fare for the very first time at a Yelp Elite event. Their menu is simple which I like, mainly gyro platters and wraps. Store is clean with friendly servers and the line moved quickly. I got the beef and chicken gyro combo platter with lettuce and tomato garnish, nicely dressed up with a hit of their signature white sauce. I've only had Greek gyros before and IMHO Halal Guys' version is more flavorful. The owner Khattab was very friendly and gave us a brief history of Halal Guys' humble food truck origins and expansion into Long Island and other areas. He also mentioned a few intriguing menu items that he has planned for the future that sound delish (wings....?) Of course pricing is reasonable and portions are ample. It was great to hang with fellow Yelpers at my first ever Elite event, and Jared went out of his way to make everyone feel comfortable. So glad I have Halal Guys in my nabe now!

Yelp
Not worth money!!!!!!!! In middle town they give you tons of meat. You can't finish it by one person
google avatar

Marissa K.

Yelp
So happy this Long Island location opened. The best chicken and rice and falafels around. Obsessed with their red sauce and falafels. They're super crunchy but soft on the inside. We drive 40 minutes to get here and it's totally worth it. This location is super clean and has amazing staff.
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered the chicken/beef combo platter for take out. It was very good. Decent portions, plenty of sauce packets.
google avatar

Daisy C.

Yelp
Was very excited to see halal guys opened. We have been wanting to try this since it was under construction. However we were very disappointed. The flavors are not that same as the one you get a Rockefeller's. The rice was very bland and the the white sauce was more of a salad dressing. They do offer more variety than the cart. They have beef and spicy buffalo chicken. They also have dessert like cookies and baklava. We ordered the regular chicken and one gyro (chicken and beef) regular. It comes with lettuce, tomatoes and pita. I was glad we got it with barbecue because it tastes much better as the white sauce was not the same and the rice was bland. Decent amount of food for the regular but we do prefer the ones from the cart in the city.
google avatar

Dipesh P.

Yelp
Great food, plenty of parking, enough tables. Would recommend. Food was made hot and quickly and accurately. I'll go back.
google avatar

Yelp
Finally had the chance to try the Famous "The Halal Guys" East Meadow location! The food was delicious! Was it as good as 53rd & 6th OG spot? No way Jose But it's still way better than all the copycat Halal stands and restaurants! I got the mixed combo platter from here extra white sauce, BBQ, and a line of hot sauce..
google avatar

Mike U.

Yelp
Tired of getting food here, there is no quality control in the evening, I come here often , sometimes it's good and most times not. Tonight I got 6 platters with burnt gyro, and overcooked chicken, pita hard as a rock and mushy rice. Hire better staff they suck. Not coming back I spent plenty of money here. Go somewhere else.
google avatar

Cheryl C.

Yelp
Hubs has been going to this Halal Guys ever since they opened and always orders his favorite Combo Chicken and Beef Gyro Platter ($10) We used to always go to the midtown food truck and Hubs was happy to have a location closer to home. The guy loves this dish so much, he'd drive into the city from LI just for it! When asked if this location is as good as the original, he says no but close. He thinks the older griddle gives that extra flavor to the food. I ordered the falafel from the food truck and was disappointed so never ordered it from this location. I was beyond excited to hear they created a meatless gyro made with pea protein, brown rice, coconut oil, Halal Guys spice mix, beets, mushrooms, and paprika. Their website says it's a limited time item but I hope they keep it on the menu permanently because it's soooo good!! I haven't had a Halal Guys platter for years and was really impressed by the flavor, texture of the meatless version and would definitely recommend it to anyone who is plant based. They even have a new vegan tzatziki sauce that while not as delicious as their traditional white sauce, is still pretty darn good! Many thanks to The Halal Guys for giving us this amazing plant-based option!

Yelp
Literally the worst chicken rice I've ever had. The original food cart in the city have already gone to shit, this place is even worse...
google avatar

Daniel L.

Yelp
The place looks fine and clean. Workers wearing COVID safety measures. (Masks and gloves) The chicken and rice platter is off! The chicken does not taste anywhere near what it supposed to taste like. I have had 53rd and 6th Halal Guys carts hundreds of times over the past 15 years and their chicken is not even close to tasting authentic. It was also too salty. Please look into this and improve your marinating and chicken taste so that it is authentic to the original flagship cart of 53rd and 6th. Also, I have tried 14th Street Union Square and Amsterdam locations as well and those tasted fine. Please improve!!!
google avatar

Benson M.

Yelp
Used to come here until I realized there are other places for Great Halal. My favorite thing here is the Falafels.
google avatar

Jennifer Y.

Yelp
Great food and friendly staff! There's tape on the floor so that people can social distance. One customer entered without a mask and she was politely asked to leave and order online and they would bring it out to her. Standard food and service held to the other Halal Guys locations! My standard is the regular sized combo (mix of beef gyro and chicken) platter. They put as much white sauce as you ask for-- and I always ask for more. Be careful of the red sauce. I'm a ghost pepper salsa kind of gal and I only need a tiny bit to spice up my platter! There's a parking lot with easy parking. If you want extra packets of white sauce I believe they are 50 cents each. Can't wait to return!

Butterfly 3.

Yelp
Ordered this for lunch today with 3 coworkers. It was disgusting! I tried to eat it because I was starving. The chicken looked like dog food. Tasted nasty. Rice was funky. Worst white sauce I've ever had. Tasted artificial. I literally threw the entire thing out! Other coworkers ate a little but agreed it was terrible. NEVER again.
google avatar

Happy F.

Yelp
One of the best gyros I've had in a long time really loved the cilantro and hot sauce on the gyro the lamb was cooked so good most definitely coming back the service was great and it was very clean and it's reasonable pricing cant wait to try the chicken gyros
google avatar

Komal K.

Yelp
Stale rice and cold chicken. The rice is so hard that when I chew u hear the voice like eating a plastic. The chicken is totally cold. I used to love there chicken rice but this is worst quality.
google avatar

Yelp
So glad I stopped in Halal Guys this weekend! I was in the mood for halal and I was in the area and remembered that Halal Guys opened up in the area! Unfortunately, I missed the yelp elite event but that didn't stop me from taking a shot at halal guys and I'm glad I did. I like how the set up it similar to other restaurants that is not common for halal food and I was able to get what I wanted on my platter. On to the quality of the food. I got the combo with both chicken and gyro meet and it was the best choice on the menu! The food was clean and delicious just be careful with the hot sauce . I only put two lines of hot sauce and it was tough surviving that . For sure I will be coming back and will he trying their limited time burrito!
google avatar

Marvin L.

Yelp
This place is a bit of a travel from where I work but I still make the drive once a week just to get their food. Halal guys in my opinion is a staple and is really satisfying. The amount of food they give you is enough for two meals. The service is generally fast even during lunch hours. You will occasionally have that one guy who is ordering for the entire office but overall they find the best ways to speed it up.

Darren C.

Yelp
If you're on a diet this is the best place for you. I paid $13 dollars for this large platter and have about half the portion of foods compared to other trucks or restaurants. Shah's or other foods trucks are a much better alternative.
google avatar

Yelp
Funny...the first time I had The Halal Guys I was drunk but I still remember it so clearly. We stumbled out of some club and had a major case of the munchies. We drove around and found a truck with a long line of drunk people. So we figured it must be good! It makes me so happy to welcome this gem to east meadow. Tonight I had the pleasure of attending a yelp elite event at this location and meeting the owner! The location has ample parking, plenty of sit down seating and friendly staff. The food was just as good as the original cart in NYC ...the only thing that changed is that I'm not drunk & I know the power of the red sauce!! ( little goes a long way) Come check this place out the grand opening is Saturday 21st! They will have a DJ, giveaways and great food. Sincerely, Always hungry

Rich O.

Yelp
Price is absolutely crazy. $16.26 for a regular size combo over rice with one extra white sauce packet. Can get the same size and better quality right down the street for $9.75.
google avatar

Chris P.

Yelp
I've gone to the little cart in the city more times than I can count; at all hours of the night. Drunk, sober. Hungry and not (I've gone right after a dinner in the area just cause I was close, wasnt even hungry but I couldn't pass up an opportunity) Surprisingly this location is just as good. Very excited to have one so close to home.

Yelp
Still the BEST!!! The slim white guy is THe BEST!!! We literally drove here from the Farmingdale location after throwing the food we got there in the garbage. This location is consistent, warm, and served with a smile and jokes alongside with yummy food. Thanks
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
Friendly staff, quick service good prices and large portions now I understand why three brothers went from a hot dog cart in NYC to 100 stores nationwide. Parking after work may a little rough in this parking lot but the food is tasty a variety of home made sauces------ BEWARE ---- Hot Sauce is The real deal-. I enjoyed a combo plate which gave me a taste of everything I was starved and I was unable to finish my plate a very rare occurrence for me. Don't be shy with the sauces add it on you will not be disappointed!!!! Every plate is made to your preference so choose away. I will definitely be back to try more of there menu items.
google avatar

Karen C.

Yelp
So happy they opened a place closer to me. Farmingdale location was just too far. Actually surprised there was no line. Staff is nice and the food is good. It's not the same as the city but it's still good. Chicken is different it's chunks not shredded. Glad they finally opened a closer location.

John O.

Yelp
Ate here tonight. Ordered a beef/ chicken combo and asked for the spicy chicken guy said no problem. Other guy came out the back to make the chicken. Then he told me that I couldn't get that chicken in the combo. After a bit of back and forth he did it for an extra charge, $18 total. Food was pretty inedible and dry, extremely disappointing. I'll go back to Shahs, first and last time here.

Kris H.

Yelp
Meh. Not really a great place. Went for some takeout the other night and was underwhelmed. First off there is no lamb option so it's just chicken, falafel, or beef. The man working the grill was not wearing a hat or hairnet of any kind and man did he have a lot of hair! To be transparent I did NOT find any hair in my food so kudos for that. There aren't that many veggie options to add to your platter and the person working there informed me that they were extra for each. They give each platter a few small pieces of pita but there is no option to get a side of pita. All in all I'd much rather go to Shah's. Better selection, more sides, and cheaper prices.
google avatar

Allison F.

Yelp
This place is great Every once in a while i eat halal and when i used to work in the city I would always go to the corner truck on 6th ave I am super happy that they have this location close to my house! The food is just as great.. It is more pricey because it's a store front but the quality is just as great
google avatar

Orla M.

Yelp
Having worked in NYC for many years, cart food from Halal Guys has long been one of my favorite lunch time go-to options. I was pleasantly surprised they had a brick & mortar restaurant here on Long Island, and better yet it was in delivery range. The food here is exactly what I was hoping for and honestly better than the cart food I've grown used to. The portions are large, the meat was juicy (not at all dried out like you get from the carts occasionally), and you have a larger choice of extra add-ons & toppings for the plates (olives!). You can also add two pieces of falafel to your plate if you order a meat plate, which most carts I've been to won't do. Delivery time was very quick when I ordered, another bonus!
google avatar

Tommy B.

Yelp
Do not use Uber eats. I ordered two platters with white sauce and extra white sauce. Even ordered an extra packet of white sauce and we didn't receive any at all. None on the platters and no packet. Oh and one utensil for two orders. Platters are like half full too. Terrible.
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
Sorry to say, this is not like the Halal guys I remember from the city. This is based on an order from May 26, 2021 I had the classic gyro over rice. I am disappointed, and I hate leaving negative reviews. Quick summary: Beef was dry and salty. Pita tasted old Veggies seemed ok, which is why it's not a two star review. I wish the sauce was already on the food, not a super big deal. While I hate endorsing another vendor on a review, let's just say someone named Shah does a really good job on their lamb over rice, juicier and more satisfying. I hope to give this place another shot but unfortunately it's not anytime soon. Sorry guys.

Yelp
The food is excellent but the prices simply aren't competitive with other halal places in the area who have food of mostly similar quality. It's frustrating because like I said, the food is great, but it's hard to justify spending that much more on a platter when I can get one down the street that's $4 less AND larger than the one I'd get here. Add on pita and a drink and I'm walking out of here with a meal that's nearly double the cost of the same meal from Shah's or Naz's for less food.

I was initially timid to try this place as I wasn't sure if the food would be as good as their location in the city. I am happy I gave it a chance because the food is delicious and maybe even better than the city locations. The staff go above and beyond very hospitable. I eat here for lunch several times a week and would highly recommend it to friends and family. I think the management should give their employees a raise because they genuinely elevate the dining experience.
