The Hall on Mag is worth the visit whenever you're in NOLA.
The interior is beautifully designed, and their menu is varied enough that you have to come back to try their other dishes.
I visited only days after their opening weekend, but the staff is already sailing smoothly.
Trying to get a good measure of the different offerings, I ordered Lettuce Wraps, a Fluffy Taco, Arancini, Hush Puppies, Flaming Saganaki, Churros, Baklava, and a mocktail.
This was barely too much food for one person, but I was hungry after a long day of traveling, so make of that what you will.
I first received the mocktail. I had asked for something refreshing, and this is exactly what I was delivered. It looked beautiful, and, following a theme throughout my meal, the flavors were balanced perfectly.
The lettuce wraps were a balanced mixture of the 5 tastes, with the peanut sauce shining throughout the dish. There was just the right amount of lettuce served with the filling, which is an often overlooked element of a dish, and deserves special mention.
The flaming Saganaki was very good, but I have a strong bias for this type of dish. The spirit used to light the dish aflame was everclear, so there was a slight lasting bitterness to one of the bites that was a little overpowering. Otherwise the rest of the dish was very balanced and delightful.
The fluffy taco is very similar in looks to a gordita, but in terms of execution, structure, and flavor, this blows the gordita away. It comes with a dipping sauce that is the right amount of heat and smokiness to add to the dish in the perfect way. The chef is from Mexico, and I think he's doing his country a service with this take on traditional street fare.
Being fair, by the time I had tried the Arancini and Hush Puppies, I was getting quite full. The Arancini are subtly flavored, but shine best when not dipped into the tomato in the bowl. The bush puppies are to be dipped into housemade fancy ketchup, and both are very good, though filling.
I enjoyed my visit and will be looking forward to visiting again on my next trip!
