Happy Vegan Bakery and Cafe Brings Vegan and Gluten-Free Comfort Food and Cupcakes to the Bayview - Eater SF

"There’s a new-ish bakery and comfort foods supplier in the Bayview, and this one is all gluten-free and vegan. The Happy Vegan Bakery and Cafe, run by Tobias Patella, dishes up shockingly tasty-looking dishes, given the myriad of allergies he’s accounting for. The shop offers everything from spicy chicken sandwiches slathered in coleslaw to hash brown-stuffed bagel sandwiches to strawberry muffins that look positively gluten-filled (but, somehow, are not)." - Paolo Bicchieri

I can't speak to the restaurant service or atmosphere (we ordered takeout), but the food is horrible and worse than that way overpriced!! The chicken tenders were so rubbery that I couldn't chew through them. I ordered a veggie sub $25.00 (assuming I would get a roll that was the size in their picture (a footlong) and instead got something similar to a chibbata sandwich (smaller than my hand) with a single layer of veggies (carefully placed to make sure nothing overlapped even once). It felt like I was basically eating a piece of bread with some seasoning for [crazy]. If you are going to eat here, the one dish that was as expected is the egg(less) salad.

Loved this place! My girlfriend ordered a just perfect cheesy omelette and added spinach. I ordered the breakfast platter with beyond sausage, added jalapeños to my egg. Both platters came with avocado and had 2 sides each, we chose the gf bagel and hashbrowns. Portions are hefty. I truly have a difficult time finding good vegan breakfast spots so when I do I'm def gonna post about it. The person at the window was super helpful and patient while helping us being that we didn't know the menu, the process to order and had a few questions :)

Google
I haven't tried anything I didn't like here. Vegan breakfast is hard to find so they really help to fill that need. Just wish they had dine in though. That would have been the full experience! There is a green curb space right out front for you to park while waiting for your food. You can order online and pick it up or you can order at the window. My only issue with ordering online is that you can't modify the order. So for example, if you are allergic to something in one of the items, the website doesn't allow you to write in modifications. So you just have to order at the window in that case.

Google
Hole in the wall. Excellent gluten-free comfort food. Order via their website and pickup at the location. Crispy chicken really is crispy and tasty. Acai bowl is legit as well. Portions are bigger than the pictures suggest. The waffle part of the sandwich is also gluten-free, as is everything they serve. Glad to have found this place after dropping off my dog for boarding at High Tail Hotel 👍 2nd time: crispy chicken burger with fries added (they put it in the burger) is awesome. Looks small-ish but quite dense and filling. Highly recommended 🙌

I've been vegan 8 yrs. Had some good breakfasts. This one might have been the best. Had the avocado amulet. Amazing with sausage, bacon veggies and hash browns.

Google
OMG!!!! Made to perfection. Clean. Fresh ingredients. I can’t believe it’s vegan. Happy Vegan has stole my soul. Happy Vegan— made me a happy yet loyal customer. I found myself googling plant base restaurants. HV was the first one to pop up. I really wanted everything on the menu but I went with the omelette deluxe breakfast meal! 🙌 AMAZING! - It’s worth every penny.

no no

Google
I never leave bad reviews but this was so terrible I can’t not leave one. I paid $70 on Uber eats for this. Frozen pie. “Latte” with added whip cream that was cold and disgusting looked batched and heated, like it wasn’t even made on the spot. The sandwhich was disgusting, bread was hard. Avocado was black and rotten. Toast was literally pieces of bread untoasted. Absolutely horrendous never support this place.

Google
This was my first visit and it did not disappoint. I loved the fact parking directions was included on the ordering site. The customer service was exceptional and with a smile. The veggie omelette flavorful and packed to maintain its warmth. I also tried the pumpkin cheesecake and it was delightful. I say it’s often hard to find excellent customer service and excellent food. The Happy Vegan has both.

Yelp
SERVICE - takeout window located off of Bayshore Blvd near Lowe's and Grocery Outlet - limited parking available in front for pick up only - no seating areas nearby - there is only one man cooking and giving orders and he works as fast as he can - recommend placing the order ahead of time because we waited nearly an hour to get our food (he gave us free lemonade for waiting though) - food all packaged in takeout boxes MENU - vegan brunch dishes, sandwiches, and smoothies - average priced ($20 per entree with sides) FOOD - mushroom spinach omelette (7/10): plant based egg filled with onions, mushroom, spinach, sun dried tomatoes, vegan cheese, topped with pesto drizzle, and served with choice of two sides. This was my favorite of the three things we ordered. The combination of the pesto, sun dried tomatoes, and mushroom have the right balance of umami and herbiness. It is a filling meal on its own as it is loaded with cheese and veggies. We got tater tots and toast for the two sides which were not spectacular. - eggs benedict (5/10): English muffin topped with vegan bacon and poached egg. coated with hollandaise sauce, and served with choice of side. The most unique part of this dish was the poached egg that actually had a runny yolk. The hollandaise could have used more flavor and the bread on its own was chewy. - bananas flambé french toast (6/10): four slices of french toast with a slice of caramelized banana coated in sugar syrup and served with butter and maple syrup on the side. This tasted surprisingly like actual french toast. The edge of the bread was crispy while the center was soft. I would have preferred it to be made with brioche or sourdough bread to better absorb the batter. The toppings were also a little too sweet but that is expected for a bananas flambé dish. WOULD I GO BACK? It's a good option for vegan brunch foods but I hope they can add outdoor or indoor seating

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place a lot. The ordering process was quite easy. We ordered in advance and the order was ready when we got there. We probably ordered about 15 minutes in advance. The food quality is mixed. I'm very picky with my hollandaise sauce and this hollandaise sauce. Miss the mark. It wasn't sour and it wasn't sweet. It was just sort of bland. The hashbrowns were awesome! People have complained about that in reviews but I thought they were the best part of the meal. The breakfast sandwich was quite tasty , the dessert which was supposed to be banana Brulé basically was two bananas with a little bit of sugar on a waffle. Was definitely nothing special. I haven't decided if I'm going to go back. It just wasn't that special. On a sidenote, I went to St Francis Fountain afterwards and got their Diablo burger. Wow! That's some excellent food!

Yelp
This place has spectacular food! It's unbelievably tasty :) Their menu is quite extensive now compared to when I visited them a year ago. 1. California chicken burger (5/5) Subbed the bacon with egg (they did this for free :)), sub mayo with garlic aioli, get ketchup on the side. 2. French toast (5/5) Get extra maple syrup and all the freeeeee toppings. Both these options were extremely tasty. I devoured both of these immediately :) I can't wait to go back and try everything on their menu :)

Yelp
Great pick place and vegan runny eggs :) Everything was Gluten Free as well. No place to sit - only for pick up. Nice addition to plant based foods in SF.

Yelp
I was excited to try this place out as it had an all-vegan menu, and although not being vegan myself wanted to support businesses that are. I ordered via UberEats and got their Ultimate bowl (which has acai and pitaya base) and their vegan breakfast sandwich (which has plant-based egg and meat patty.) The vegan sandwich had a mushy texture, which stems from the ingredients rather than the preparation of the food. A lot of its flavor comes from the patty which is loaded with spices. I selected an everything bagel but it came with a whole wheat one instead. The acai bowl was truly my greatest fear come to light - it's common sense not to order specific foods for takeout like noodles, a steak, good sushi, etc. However, I was craving acai and didn't have time to go grab it, and against my better judgment still ordered it. And as expected, it was disappointing. They gave a small cup and 4/5 of it was the toppings, mainly granola and banana. However, I will say that they have a good selection of toppings. The acai you did get was in the form of frozen shards, and the pitaya was a sticky mess.

Yelp
The Happy Vegan is a ghost kitchen located in a pretty industrial area off Bayshore. I see it pop up all the time on DoorDash and other food delivery apps. Pros: -Fully vegan/plant-based kitchen that offers a colorful variety of options focused mainly on Breakfast & lunch items. It's surprising how limited the vegan breakfast options are in San Francisco, so it's nice to have a place that specializes in bagel sandwiches and egg dishes, and pastries. -Good prices: The bulk of their menu costs around $10, which is a rare find in SF these days. Going out, even to modest mom & pop restaurants, is becoming a luxury now. Nice to be able to grab a quick bite without breaking the bank. -Easy pick-up: Pull up and parallel park into their dedicated spot right out front and then grab your order from the window. It's hard to miss. Cons: -Food quality/taste is hit or miss. I've tried their egg bagel sandwiches and enjoyed them. I tried their chicken pesto sandwich and couldn't finish it. Their loaded fries are not very good at all...pretty flavorless. Stick with the loaded breakfast sandwiches to be safe. Overall, a good option for on-the-go and something quick & easy to start the day, but don't expect gourmet and you might have to try a few things to see what you like the best.

Yelp
It's a small spot and you have to pre-order. I didn't know that and tried to order by window which was not accepted. Hence, they just ignored me. Never ended up ordering so I cannot comment on the food itself
google avatar

Ell B.

Yelp
We like this place because we are vegan and it's only a couple of blocks from our home. With that said, it is pricey to say the least, and the portions are incredibly limited. if you are vegan yourself, you can probably make half of the menu on your own at home fairly easily. With that said some of their vegan pastries are freagin delicious!

Yelp
MY BF is Gluten free and I'm pescatarian. This breakfast place tastes really good. We've eaten here twice. That being said, the second time we ordered Uber Eats and my order was wrong which is disappointing. I ordered ultimate breakfast sausage, egg, cheese and tomato sandwich and added bacon, hash browns and waffle instead of English muffin. My sausage and tomato was just missing. So original sandwich was basically gone and they only put the add ons I paid extra for. Otherwise, the place is good for gluten free vegan food!

Yelp
Amazing! You can walk by and smell the food calling your name. They were making fresh granola when we ordered. Our cashier was the sweetest soul. We ordered a breakfast burrito that just hit the spot. There is no dine in, only take out and delivery.

Yelp
Their food was amazing amazing amazing ‼‼ I didn't interact with anyone there because I had it doordashed. I live far from here but this was the best food ever !!

Yelp
Ordered a bagel with cream cheese, avocado, tomato and added chicken. My friend ordered a bagel with cheese and sausage. Also ordered a smoothie and espresso. Adding the chicken took a minute but everything else came out quickly. Cream cheese was a tad more bitter than expected if you compare to tofutti (if you've had that before). Espressos was definitely the move. The smoothie was good but standard good. The espressos surprised me with the flavor so I'd recommend hitting that.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place because it's so close to my house. Ordered the BLT bagel cut in half for pickup. I noticed right away that the bag was super light. Tiny serving for a $12 bagel! There was way too much 'cream cheese' on it that wasn't very tasty. They couldn't manage to cut it in half despite asking for that option. I'm not impressed and won't be back.

Yelp
It took an hour for them to toast four pieces of bread, slap some cream cheese on them and sprinkle some capers on top. While I waited, I was yelled at by a local guy with pants hanging around his knees. When I finally got my order and saw the capers were missing, they could not get on the same page as to why that was. One said, the capers were in there, the second said they had ran out the day prior. Either way, I was left with an unsatisfied craving. Decent food quality. Unfortunate location.

Yelp
Loved all the incredible vegan options they have to offer. The burrito and the french toast were so good! Definitely a go to stop for us from now on! Thank you for offering such wonderful vegan options.

Yelp
The prices are great compared to other vegan options in the city. The location is a bit out of the way and there was no outdoor seating, but one could trek to Bernal Heights park for a nice view. It took a good while for our order as they were probably working on online delivery orders, too. The menu is very extensive. The lamb burger was excellent!!! The salmon burger was so-so.

Yelp
So happy there's a place like this in the neighborhood. Moved here 5 months ago and just discovered it!

Yelp
My vegan daughter and I got a bite to eat here on our way out of SF for the ride home to the Pacific NW. This place has a cool colorful electronic menu and quite a few offerings. They observed the pandemic restrictions and filled our orders quickly. I had the Original Acai Bowl with Almond Butter and it was yummy and filling. I love these types of bowls and would definitely try The Happy Vegan again for a quick healthy breakfast.
google avatar

Yelp
This place was so cute!! Everything here is gluten free, sugar free and vegan to my knowledge! The service here was very nice! A man with slightly long hair helped me and was very inviting! I got their pumpkin muffin ($4), blueberry oatmeal bar ($4), chocolate muffin ($4), blueberry muffin ($4), and two different everything began sandwiches ($6)! Everything was yummy! I didn't really like the blueberry muffin tbh but the pumpkin muffin and the oatmeal bar were the best!! The bagels were really yummy too! This is coming from someone who doesn't really eat a gf diet! They also have day old pastries in a little basket for $1 each sometimes :) Will be returning whenever I come back to sf

Calestro B.

Yelp
The food and service is stellar. The portion sizes are parity to the price. There isn't one dish or smoothie that I have that wasn't delicious!
google avatar

Monique M.

Yelp
We DoorDashed some bagels with cream cheese & avocado. it arrived with an old soggy wheat bagel (we ordered plain), not toasted, barely any cream cheese, and a little bit of avocado that was spoiled.

Yelp
Omg this place truly has the perfect name because every time I come here I am one happy vegan! It is like vegan Disneyland coming here! They have everything you could ever want and more! Plus the best part is that everything is gluten free too! As someone who is vegan and in recent years has had to go gluten free I am so grateful this place exists. I love that I can enjoy all my non vegan childhood favorites like burgers, chicken sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, and yummy desserts here. Their breakfast sandwiches are my favorite- I especially love their plant based bacon and English muffins! You would never know that all of their buns, breads, and bagels are gluten free their texture is PERFECT and not dry and sad like so many other gluten free vegan bread options. I believe they are all house made along with many of their other mock meats- that is impressive. I have brought my non vegan best friend and boy friend here and they both loved it. On top of that their prices are SO fair and portions are generous. I love that you can customize everything and how many options they have for everything. They have seemingly unlimited sauce, cheese, and mock meat options. The best part is that their customer service is incredible and they so clearly care about the customer's satisfaction. You might not expect much as it is a take out only restaurant, but it is truly a positive experience every time we come to pickup our food. Like I said I always leave- a happy vegan.
google avatar

Michael E.

Yelp
Lots of different vegan options. Food was good, a little on the pricey side. It's take out only, it would be nice if they had tables, as there aren't too many sit down vegan places in the city.
google avatar

Yelp
First off I gotta give The Happy Vegan major props for opening up at such a difficult time during COVID! I was pumped to find out about this cafe after our favorite place to get a vegan bagel closed down a while ago (RIP Katz... real ones know!). Tucked away on a little side street in SOMA (near my work, YAS!), it's a quaint coffee shop style spot with a couple of small tables outside. I was stoked to see that everything they offer is gluten free and vegan (of course), with options like bagels, toast, smoothie bowls and pastries. For our first visit, I went for a "Californian," ($6) which is cream cheese and avocado on a bagel. I appreciated the variety of cream cheese offerings (plain, scallion or "lox"), and the fact that you can choose a plain or everything bagel. I decided to go for scallion on a plain bagel. My partner got "The Works," ($7) which was cream cheese, avocado and tomato which they ordered on an everything bagel. I absolutely loved that their cream cheese tasted homemade; it had a nice tanginess to it and a good texture! It was a little thicker than traditional cream cheese but I liked that. Overall the bagels were fluffier than expected being gluten free, and albeit a little small, we enjoyed them! Next time I'll definitely get the everything bagel for some added flavor and I can't wait to try their "egg" bagels, which looked delicious but I just wasn't hungry enough this time around! The Happy Vegan is such a little gem in SOMA where food options, particularly vegan ones, are scarce. I love that they have so many grab and go items if you need a quick snack or a coffee fix. Service was friendly and helpful, as well. I can't wait to stop by on my way to work in the future, especially since I'm a poor food planner and always end up hungry halfway through my shift, lol. I'll definitely be back for more bagels and to try their smoothie bowls and toasts!
google avatar

Mike K.

Yelp
Who doesn't love bagels? To top it off, this little breakfast spot is 100% vegan! Meaning that everything is made from plants. But don't get me wrong though, the bagels are delicious! You wouldn't even know that it was plant based unless someone told you. Not vegan? That's okay, give it a try. You can enjoy breakfast guilt-free here (low in saturated fat and no cholesterol). And if you are vegan, this place is a dream come true. This is easily one of my favorite little cafes in San Francisco!

Max O.

Yelp
middd. bagel sammy honestly tasting stale. that's all i got so no disrespect to the other dishes, it is what it is. it could be good someday but i wouldn't pop out here another time unless i was really hungry or maybe hungover. kinda fucked up going here lol.
google avatar

Ashley P.

Yelp
Sweet little vegan cafe with yummy gluten free, vegan baked goods and breakfast options. They have coffee/ tea and smoothies too. I like their gluten free bagels with either vegan cream cheese or vegan egg and cheese. Glad to have a vegan option in the neighborhood. I ordered two gluten free bagels today. They're baked fresh at their Oakland facility. They are small but yummy!
google avatar

Yelp
Best gf waffles I've ever had. And delivery is fast. Found this place on Uber eats and now it's one of my favs.

Yelp
Had to try this new place and earned "My new favorite place in town" designation! A must stop for vegan/non-vegan alike living and visiting San Francisco. They offer a wide array of treats for everyone from quality espresso/huge tea selections to vegan/sugar free/glutten free/keto desserts/ pastries. I personally love their blueberry streusel and the other pastries were really delicious and fresh. The chocolates were so good I can eat them everyday without feeling guilty. The star I believe are the bowls they sell. The Tropical bowl was my favorite and the serving size was a good portion and price was reasonable .I love the superfood ingredients they add to it that you won't find in other snack shops. It was delicious and everything blended so well with each other. The whole staff were super friendly and they went thru what they were offering at the store since there's so much to choose from. Overall, I highly recommend this to all my friends and they have earned a loyal customer. I left the store definitely "happier"!!!
google avatar

Kathy C.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place, but unfortunately, just wasn't all that impressed! The shop is adorable and the service was great, but the food itself was just okay. We tried two of the breakfast sandwiches - the ultimate bagel and the Beyond breakfast sausage sandwich. There was nothing wrong with either of them, but they just weren't very tasty. The chia pudding was good, but a bit expensive ($6 for a small cup). We also had two lattes, which were extremely watered down and lacked espresso flavor. There was only one person working that day, so it took a while to prepare our order, but he was extremely friendly and nice. He was probably the reason why I still had a decent experience here overall, despite the food/drink not meeting expectations! The Happy Vegan is tucked away in a little alley way, but easy to find. It probably isn't somewhere that I would go out of my way to eat at again, but perhaps I would return if I was specifically looking for plant-based egg/cheese or other breakfast options in SF.

Yelp
I'm visiting from NY and got delivery from The Happy Vegan - and I sure am one happy vegan! It can always be a bit challenging to find vegan meals when traveling but this was easy, delicious and im definitely biased with pricing because im from NY but I thought it was very fairly priced! The matcha waffles were delicious, and my gingerbread latte- so good I already want more! I ordered a BLT for lunch later which I haven't had yet but am sooo looking forward to trying. The restaurant even wrote me a little note that the pumpkin bread I ordered ran out so they supplemented 2 orders of banana bread- thanks so much for being thoughtful! Even if you're not vegan I definitely recommend getting food here, you won't be disappointed!

Brooke B.

Yelp
The Happy Vegan has very delicious vegan food that is SO well priced. Since moving to San Francisco, Ive noticed that The Happy Vegan is one of the only ENTIRELY vegan places that isn't expensive or overrated. The Happy Vegan is great and I can't wait to try everything. Service is always friendly and fast.

Laura G.

Yelp
They recommended the hash browns, which were barely brown and not fried. Just shredded potatoes really. See the photo. And they forgot the sauce I paid for. So just a complete inedible waste of money.
google avatar

Daniel R.

Yelp
Great experience! Welcoming customer service!! We got beyond breakfast sandwiches So tasty And produce in it was fresh! A delicious latte and a tropical healthy Smoothie. I will definitely be coming back ;p

Deanna C.

Yelp
This is not a sit down restaurant, it's a walk up window only service. It may look sketchy but it's fab. Pancakes, waffles, breakfast sandwich all delish. Plain bagel with cream cheese was so so. But everything else was great.
google avatar

Tony C.

Yelp
Warning places over charges credit card and I found some cut plastic bag in my smoothie. Smooth taste like a premix from food co

Micah G.

Yelp
the food is so so good we went to this place because my mom is lactose intolerant and vegans dont frink milk so we went here and got something she could never have. Vegan blueberry chessecake. we also got the blueberry tart and french toast everything was amazing 10/10
google avatar

Hannah A.

Yelp
I always love their breakfast sandwiches. It's exactly what you would expect, even non-vegans love it. Perfect for a quick on the go breakfast. Very nice staff as well
google avatar

Riel A.

Yelp
I love their freshly grounded coffee and baked pumpkin loaf break. Their barista Dessa was so helpful in helping us decide what to get. Vegan fruit bowl was great. We decided on the chocolate açaí fruit bowl. You also need to try their jams, they're to die for. You cannot go wrong on what ever you order from here. Order online, Uber eats, or door dash if you can't make it over. You will love everything from here.
google avatar

Sunder I.

Yelp
Good baristas, good coffee, they have resident discounts too. My go to is the mushroom coffee. What? Mushrooms? Yeah I'm a fungi fun guy so yes! It's rich and tasty. It's called cognitive because it tickles the brain when you drink it. I am a regular customer because of their hours. If it's late in the afternoon and you need something delicious, this is your place to go.
google avatar

Kimi F.

Yelp
Visiting from out of town and ordered bagels for breakfast via DoorDash. Extremely happy to have found vegan / gluten free options! I haven't had a bagel in such a long time. This definitely surpassed any expectation when I ordered. Highly recommend!

Catherine M.

Yelp
I discovered this cute cafe on a whim. I've recently started my vegan journey due to recent health issues, and I've been struggling to find places that offer good plant based alternatives. I was so excited to find this place! I'm a NY so I naturally have a love for bagels, so to find breakfast sandwiches that are completely plant based, and taste delicious was like the highlight of my life. I was even able to convince my partner (a meat lover) to give the spot a chance. He too is amazed at how good the plant based breakfast sandwiches taste. We have been going to this cafe at least 2-3 times a week. I do want to give a shout-out to the banana bread--it is out of this world! Highly recommend to anyone that is in the area.
google avatar

Renee G.

Yelp
Best bagel sandwich everr. I honestly don't even like bagels. But I ordered the ultimate bagel sandwich which consisted of a gluten free everything bagel, just egg slice, vegan cheddar cheese, avocado, and tomato- and it was bomb. Dot. Com. I was not able to try to the blueberry muffin as they were out of them which was a slight disappointment but that's okay. I'm sure I'll be able to try it the next time I go back- which will most likely be soon!
google avatar

Issel N.

Yelp
This place is amazing! I was a happy vegan after coming here. I ordered the lox everything bagel which was supper creamy and tasty to say the least. I also ordered the ultimate breakfast sandwich which I was excited to have since I haven't had a complete breakfast sandwich (with v egg AND v meat AND v cheese) at a restaurant/cafe. The breakfast sandwich had a slight sweet maple taste that I also enjoyed (not too sweet). I also ordered the tropical chia smoothie which was really smooth, creamy and not too sweet. I personally enjoy drinks not too sweet. The vibes were calm and eccentric with a very friendly employee that was knowledgeable of the menu.
google avatar

Lian F.

Yelp
Such a cute little vegan cafe. The mushroom late and açaí bowls are great. Owner is super friendly and can't wait to visit again.
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
I've been ordering from The Happy Vegan weekly for awhile, and im so in love with this place. The cherry pie is absolutely to die for, the coffee drinks are delicious with clean ingredients- a rare treat - and the gluten free vegan breakfast sandwiches are the stuff of dreams. You can't get breakfast food like this, gluten free and vegan, anywhere else in the city! Please stay open, forever!
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Found this gem today on DoorDash. Ordered the blueberry cheesecake, brownie and streusel. All absolutely were delicious, but the cheesecake was my favorite. I've missed cheesecake like you wouldn't believe and this finally hit the spot. Love that the ingredients are clean, other diets are considered on top of the vegan baseline and that they deliver.

Yelp
Very good! Reasonable. Fast and easy ordering. Loved the dragon fruit bowl. Will come back here.
