The 15 Best Chili Dogs in Los Angeles - Eater LA

"The Hat is a San Gabriel Valley staple, born from the booming post-war generation when drive-thrus and inexpensive pastrami reigned supreme. Today the company has multiple locations up and down the 210 freeway, including the Glendora outpost turning out classic chili dogs for all." - Farley Elliott

I went to a hat, super excited and got the pastrami dip. It was hot. It was fresh and absolutely delicious. My only complaint would be that the pieces are so small. They kept falling out of the sandwich and down my shirt. The french fries were good they were crispy and fresh just they didn’t have any salt on them. It’s hard to salt fries after they’re done and have the salt stick. There was a long line in the drive-through, but it went really quick. The lady that helped me was super nice 10 out of 10 would totally recommend.

Google
THE HAT!! Heck yeah! Best pastrami hands down. So flavorful and pastrami always fresh as well as how much they pack their sandwiches of pastrami they never fail here, their bread as well always fresh and soft yummy! Place is always full of people but definitely worth the wait, it'll take a little to get your food but again well worth the wait. Service it's a hit or miss, most of the time it's a miss but whatever I'm there for food lol! Only reason for the 4 stars and most of the time I ask for pastrami "DIP" never get it DIP but still a good sandwich. Other than that it's a chill spot to hit up and try their bomb pastrami!

Google
Somethings are just that good is this is that Good! California staple known for its Pastrami never disappoints. I ordered the a Pastrami’s dip and customized it by adding extra pickles and mustard🔥 order it this way. The sandwich was fresh moist tasty not too salty. Perfect balance of salt and fat. This is important when you eat pastrami. Nice thin pastrami not chunky and full of fatty tendon. The Glendora location is definitely one to visit.

Google
Love the hat since I was a little kid and even though it's pricy still love to come and visit. This visit was horrible this time telling the family let's go earlier than usual on a Friday night to beat the heavy traffic and buisness. Pulled up to drive thru only 1 car ahead in line so not busy at all. Ordered chili cheese fries extra chili , pastrami, tuna sandwich, double cheeseburger and regular fries , 2 drinks order totalling over 60 dollars. To get our food and have stale fries that are old and hard and can tell whoever made chili fries didn't care trying to cover stale fries with chili and cheese them not knowing that ive been coming for years and can tell right away they did not taste the same horrible taking the tradition of the hat away from there guest horrible to the buisness that we've all know to be the famous HAT. Just to save a few minutes instead of making fresh ones "let's throw these old ones back in the fryer re cook them" smh yes there hot now but like a hard piece of plastic not even the hot extra chili soften them up at all sad to say. THE HAT DONT LET YOUR TRADITION FALL!!!

Google
First time eating here as an out of towner - was not disappointed, and can certainly see why it is constantly busy. For the price you pay you get great portion sizes. I opted for the famous pastrami sandwich and the wet (gravy) fries and they were very satisfying with every bite. Washing it down with the delicious orange bang soda is the way to go! Even though it's busy here they are very quick and efficient with taking orders, making food, etc. The atmosphere is very nostalgic with a classic 50s/60s diner ambience. It was very nice eating and relaxing outside at night at their outdoor seating area.

Google
Stopped by after seeing xmas lights. It was a great treat. I wanted everything on their menu but settled for a pastrami dip chili cheese fries with pastrami and onion rings. There was 3 adults and 3 kids, and there was plenty of onion rings and fries to share. The pastrami sandwich was pretty good. I wish they offered a nice pickle to go with it. The onion rings are so crispy and delicious, definitely satisfied my cravings. This place is definitely a must try.

Google
Omg they have the BEST chili cheese fries!! You can order one and share with 4 people! That’s what we should have done but we got 2 orders of chili cheese fries and split a pastrami sandwich. So filling and so damn good!

Google
Yes it's fresh. Yes it's warm and you are given a decent serving of pastrami. Buut, it's boring. I have been to burger joints that have a better overall pastrami sandwich. Overall 6/10. Everything is ala carte. A combo option to save a fee bucks would be nice. My pastrami sandwich was $13 and some chsnge

Yelp
On my recent Cali trip I made a quick stop for my favorite pastrami sandwich & gravy fries. Nostalgic!!! The pastrami sandwich is not the standard deli version, this one is shaved pastrami on a roll with mustard and pickles. The pastrami burger is a juicy burger with pastrami on top. Don't forget the little yellow chilis, sometimes you get a spicy one otherwise they're pretty mild. The small fries are a huge order, perfect for sharing with another person. The wet fries are smothered in hot brown gravy (so good!)! The dining room is clean, there is some outdoor seating also, service is fast & friendly. Drive thru moves fast.

Yelp
Last night my husband saw a YouTube video about The Hat in Glendora famous pastrami sandwiches. So told he drove over tonight to get us dinner. Sad to say the sandwich didn't have very much meat, it tasted good but very skimpy on the meat. The onion rings were a lot less than I remember them serving in the past. I told my husband he should have taken out his phone and video them preparing the sandwich maybe the would have put more meat! 2-skinny pastrami dip sandwiches 1- order onion rings $33

Yelp
I wanted burgers that were cost efficient, so we ended up going to The Hat yesterday (before the game), since there were 5 of us. This location off Route 66 in Glendora was extremely packed!! Not just the inside, but the drive thru as well. Service was a bit slow. It took nearly 20 minutes for the food to come out. We ordered 5 Double Cheeseburgers, Large Onion Rings, and Pastrami Fries. The burgers were as always, freshly made, delicious, and filling!! The onion rings were very good, but a large is actually extra-extra large and we couldn't finish it. The pastrami fries were SOOO GOOD!! It's basically fries topped w cheese, chili (the chili is beef, I asked 3x), and a whole bunch of pastrami. If you like pastrami and chili cheese fries you'll love this!! Their pastrami is really good here, highly recommend!! We also got a side of gravy to top on the fries which gave it that extra flavor. *Tip: Ask for yellow chilies to go w your burger. No, they're not spicy but gives your burger a small kick!! Great hours!! They're open from 10 AM to 11 PM Mon-Wed, and 10 AM to 1 AM Thurs-Sun. WHAT!?!?! Gosh, I wish the Murrieta location would stay open that late!!! But this is good to know since I'm now in this neck of the woods. I looked for burger places around this area and the price here at The Hat just doesn't compare to other burger spots, since a double cheeseburger is only $7.59!!! Very good place to take a group when you're craving great quality burgers whilst trying to stay within budget, you get a lot of food at a lower price and the food quality is great!!

Yelp
Big ol chili cheese fries! Surely enough for 2/3 people, You can add pastrami to take them to the next level!!

Yelp
We stopped by this establishment after seeing a live, nativity scene downtown. The place looks exactly like the other cities' Hats, hehe. The environment was warm and cozy, and the staff was nice. We got the usuals- beef dip sandwiches and gravy fries. Good stuff.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was delicious I got the pastrami sandwich with fries and delicious Service was good friendly staff little wait and positive ambiance casual dining

Yelp
Big parking, drive thru and outdoor seating with cool retro inside. Clean table and booths. Clean restrooms. Quick and efficient orders. You can monitor your food order since they make them right in front of you. Old style restaurant order system with paper going down the string. Pastrami dip is huge with 2 inch of pastrami layers. The no touch drink dispenser is cool too. For sure your stomach and your tastebuds are satisfied and full. Your pocket might not Recommended.

Yelp
Food: 5/5 I'll cut to the chase. I ordered their Chilli.Hot Dog but I forgot to ask for no onions. I ended up scraping the onions off. Still delish. Service: 5/5 fast and efficient. Friendly staff and super welcoming environment with diner radio which can be turned on a tad louder. Ambiance: all decorated with a lot of 'The Hat,''s wall paintings and plants. Lots of plants. 5/5. Free plaza parking. Will be back!!!!

Yelp
I was passing by the Drive-thru of The Hat on the 4th of July, I was surprised that the place was open and packed. Since I always crave their Onion rings, I couldn't resist ordering some of their delicious ones. I usually start eating the warm onion rings once I got my order and  while I am driving. I like the  crunchiness, the savory and flavorful taste of the batter, and the quantity too. I also ordered Chili tamales, it came with crackers. It was also yummy and huge. The service was very fast. The employees were very friendly. Shoutout to all the employees who were working on the 4th of July,  while others were relaxing and enjoying the holiday. I really appreciate their service. I will be back very soon!

Yelp
The pastrami in this place are amazing. You will enjoy every bite very healthy portions.

Yelp
On a hot summer day their cold sandwich was everything & more! Service was friendly and fast, and the restaurant was clean and well kept while still keeping its authentic look. A lot of seating indoor and outside and they even have a drive thru. We ordered a large fries to share and it was more than enough! Fries were decent- i've had better but they did taste great with the chili on the side- which was worth the extra $2! Overall, a good and affordable shop still living up to its name!
google avatar

Mike F.

Yelp
Always one of my favorite places to get a pastrami with extra pickles. Big enough to share or have leftovers for the next meal. Getting food is quick, even when it's crowded. The staff are helpful if you have questions. Drive thru is extra quick, which makes it even more convenient.

Yelp
Always a great place to get the most delicious pastrami sandwich or burger Sat inside very clean and welcoming They had no touch soda dispensers very different Service was friendly and fast Everything was great

Yelp
The Hat is a staple in the Glendora area. Their pastrami is awesome with generous portions. The fries are thick and well-cooked. The restaurant has stood the test of time and is still clean with good service. It is easy to split the chili cheese fries between 2 or 3 people. I recommend this restaurant for periodic indulgences.
google avatar

Margarita M.

Yelp
This location has a big lot and so clean! We got pastrami dip and tuna sandwich. The pastrami is a little bit more on salty side so we can't finish it and the portion is big as well. I like the tuna sandwich tastes very fresh. Friendly service!
google avatar

Brandon D.

Yelp
The chilli cheese fries are always on point and for the price can feed a group of 4. (A must is the pastrami)
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
An LA area classic, for sure! If you like thinly sliced pastrami, soft rolls that still hold a chew after being dipped, with yellow mustard and briny pickles, then this is your place. They have amazing chili-cheese fries and their fries are the thicker version - not the thinner ones served by "the clown" or "the king". It's a surprising fast operation and the quality has been top-notch every single time I've been there. They even still service Orange Bang for those of you old enough to know what that is. They have burgers and sandwiches also and they manage to sneak in some of their famous pastrami into some of their other selections. If you visit an of their locations, you get the vibe of a somewhat elevated greasy spoon. The kind that parents went to when they were kids. You can't go wrong if you give this place a try. You won't regret it.

Yelp
Although I wish The Hat had some lighter food options to choose from, that's not why you come here and it won't stop me from being a return customer. The food portions are generous and the quality is as good as I remember since the past 50 some years when I first tried it. I cannot see myself paying the inflated food prices you get at fast food "restaurants" these days when I can get a much heartier meal here for my money. I'm somewhat a creature of habit and am stuck on the hot dogs, chili dogs, turkey sandwich with avocado and fries lately. I can't imagine how many fries you get with the large order of fries because the small portion is more than enough for me to share with someone. I do not return to a place if the service is bad, no matter how good the food is. Fortunately, the service here is excellent. Service is quick and everyone is friendly. I gave special Kudos to one person, but I went again and was ignored, so suffice it to say, I still love going there and still think highly of everyone's service! The place is always clean and cool. I like the seating arrangement, but I appreciate the outdoor seating where I prefer enjoy my meal. In the words of The Terminator, "I'll be back!"

Yelp
This has been my Pastrami number one spot for 45 years now. This was a walk up only spot in SGV and now has more locations through SoCal. Anxiously awaiting there Las Vegas spot opening in the future.
google avatar

Lawrence M.

Yelp
I brought my son here on one of this summer's hottest days. I decided to share one of my favorite The Hat items from my younger years. Chili Cheese Fries w/Pastrami. Oh man, he really enjoyed it. We'll definitely be back for more.

Kayla G.

Yelp
We got the chili cheese fries and added tomato and pickles. As always, orange bang to drink. The Hat is a California classic and a must try. This location wasn't too packed on a Monday afternoon, but the dining hall was about half full and a good chatter about it. Full and good service

Yelp
Oh my goodness was this location HORRIBLE ‼ Last night I went through the drive-thru & ordered a cold roast beef sandwich which wasn't even edible The beef was S0 salty that it probably raised my blood pressure Also, the bread was so old that it was DRY VERY DISAPPOINTED in this place ! The drink was extremely high in sugar too. I waited in line 20 minutes to get this lousy dinner!! I spent $17. that I couldn't eat or drink This was AWFUL‼

Yelp
CREDIT CARD FRAUD!!!! This should be 4 or 5 star review. However, having my credit card info stolen means I feel obligated to let others know so that they are careful. 99.9% of the time when I use a credit card I ONLY use it where I can insert or "tap" the card myself. If I have to hand somebody my card and they process it out of my view---- I DON'T because I know that if they record the security code, they can use that to make online purchases... well, if somebody is dishonest. Last week I was in a situation at The Hat where I needed to go through the drive thru----something I never do-- but since I had my dog with me this night, I went through the drive thru. 2 hours after I had made my purchase with a credit card at the Hats drive thru my card was hacked. There was a single $12 transaction to a long distance phone call company in Mexico at 11:15 PM my time (15 minutes after The Hat closes BTW). I know nobody in Mexico; I've never even been to Mexico. So, I wonder who from Mexico who had access to my card that evening might be from Mexico, or know somebody in Mexico??? It was only used for a long distance phone call, but like I said, I don't use the card unless I can scan or tap with it, and I don't use it for any online purchases anywhere. For online purchases I only use paypal with that directed to a different credit card. I'm pretty mad about this. Mad because now I can't trust this place which is otherwise very good. To think that they have an employee who is so entitled that they think they can get away with something like this. Sure, they didn't use the hacked card to buy a TV or stereo. But if they will steal $12 from me, they are probably doing the same from others. And then after that, probably "wetting their beak" from the cash drawer here and again is small amount too. Nothing worse than a thief. BTW, I tried to call the Hat corporate office. They put me on hold and then disconnected from me TWICE. So, I guess all that is left is to leave a review here on yelp.

Yelp
We went there for lunch after I read it's been around for over 70 years. Service was very friendly. Everything is served in to go bags which is a little bit different. I had the world famous pastrami sandwich. It was absolutely delicious. It was pretty wet because they dip it. It was so packed with pastrami that I could have made another sandwich with the pastrami that fell out if it. The other standout was the onion rings. They are hands down, the best onion rings I've ever had. It was very busy which shows they are doing something right. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

L. G.

Yelp
I have been a loyal customer for as long as I can remember. Alhambra, Temple City, Monterey Park and Pasadena. I still love the pastrami and chili fries but I don't know how many other people have noticed but they definitely cut back on the pastrami. The pastrami used to consistently be overloaded now just barely enough to fill the sandwich. When you consider the prices that just sucks.
google avatar

Kine F.

Yelp
Overall good experience, the age of the place is comforting, like it could've been a house before it turned into a restaurant. The food is good and reasonably priced I got a chili dog, onion rings, and a drink, all around 15 dollars for the meal, the chili dog was good if structurally weak, fell apart within the first 2 bites, and the onion rings were hot out the fryer. I didn't hear them call out my order so that may have been why the chili dog got a bit messy, but not long enough for anything to be cold. It's a welcome spot for a meal every once in a while but not often enough to be a known regular.
google avatar

Yelp
Parking- A+ Private lot with lots of parking! Service- A Hardworking individuals that are taking orders and cooks that are making sure our food is coming out efficiently. Food- A Came here for their famous chili cheese fries which always hits the spot no matter if your hungry or just in need of a quick snack. I also ordered it with fresh onions and tomatoes added on which helps cut through the grease from fries and chili. Since I don't get to come here all the time, I decided to order some onion rings and gravy which were both exceptional. The pastrami here is also really good so don't hesitate to order either. I didn't order it because i was craving some fried food. Ambiance- A Restaurant is clean and gives old school diner vibes. Has a self serve soda machine which is always a vibe. Price- C As someone that has been visiting this franchise since I was in middle school, prices have almost doubled. The prices are definitely on the higher end for a fast food establishment. Chili cheese fries with large onion rings and gravy equaled to $20. Overall- B+ Always enjoy coming to The Hat. Chili cheese fries are amazing as always and I just hoped it was more affordable.
google avatar

Lidia M.

Yelp
When I lived in Los Angeles, The Hat was my go-to place for pastrami sandwiches. I'm happy that the pastrami sandwiches are still as good as I remember it. The cashier was friendly, and we got our food quickly. A bonus was the orange bang at the soda machine, which was so good. My only complaint/wish is that there would be a smaller size/half order of the chili cheese fries. They have the best chili cheese fries, but the serving is huge, and I knew it would be too much food just for me. I would definitely recommend The Hat and anytime I'm visiting L.A. I try to make a stop.
google avatar

Lisset E.

Yelp
First time visiting the hat The parking lot is massive. There are tables outside available for seating. The inside is definitely old school diner vibes. The restaurant is definitely family friendly. It was nice to see groups of 6-7 eating comfortably together. When you order at the register you're able to see how your food is being cooked. The staff was friendly and very helpful. I had to try their pastrami sandwich as their name states, "world famous pastrami". The sandwich was delicious the pastrami was a huge serving. The sandwich was flavorful. The fries are served in a brown paper bag. Made a bit soggy. Not too fond of soggy fries. The whole restaurant is cute. If you look around you can read articles and see old school pictures posted.

Pauline A.

Yelp
Best onion rings is from The Hat! Love that they have drive thru, line moves at a good pace.
google avatar

Vannessa D.

Yelp
I've been coming to this location for about 15 years. It's the closet to me, it doesn't matter what time of day I go everything always tastes the same. I always split the Pastrami Dip and Chill Cheese Fries (with a side of gravy). We always have left over fries. The portions are great! We went through the drive thru and there was no line. There was two car infront of us. The line went pretty quick. The employee taking our order and giving us our food was nice. The outside was clean as it usually is.
google avatar

Ryan Y.

Yelp
It has been years since I've visited the Hat, and I'm so glad that I made the decision to try the Pastrami Dip for lunch. I went through the drive-thru and was in and out in less than 10 minutes on a Friday during lunch hour (~1pm). I am salivating at the thought of the sandwich, and will throw this back into rotation! I've opted for sandwich joints for pastrami, but the quality for the value of the sandwich exceeds all others. The pastrami itself was tender and moist, and definitely kept me full!

Grace S.

Yelp
This place was awful The workers are very mean they're disrespectful they didn't really help me at all I asked her a couple of cups for my kids. I can pour them something to drink. They didn't let me. There was really hateful talking about me. I've been going here over all my life when my parents took me and my grandparents took me. I will never go back to this place ever again.
google avatar

Ron L.

Yelp
I really don't know what to. Ordered a cold roast beef on rye bread. Overly salted and bland. For what I paid... I just think that the quality of the food needs improvement . Service is good
google avatar

Evan M.

Yelp
Just visited the Hat at 5pm. The food and service were great, but it was 90 degrees in the dining room, according to the thermostat on the wall. The next time we go, it'll definitely be the drive through.
google avatar

Anna B.

Yelp
Bomb chili cheese fries! A must-order item if you eat here. Their hot dogs (without chili) are tasty and a good portion. Fast customer service and again the chili cheese fries are amazing, some of the best you'll try!
google avatar

K. J.

Yelp
Got to love The Hat. Why they don't open one up west of Pasadena I'll never know! Pastrami Dip Double Dipped and Chili Cheese Fries with pickles!!
google avatar

Janice M.

Yelp
What can I say that hasn't been said? Chili burgers do not disappoint. This time the chili was overflowing off the burger, which is fine by me I'll just scoop it up with the fries. The Hat
google avatar

Robert S.

Yelp
This place is OK. My son and I were there for the first time. And found it pretty good. Not the best, neither the worst average. Prices are reasonable
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
What can I say that hasn't already been told about one of the greatest pastrami spots in Southern California? Yeah...exactly...we all know what to come to expect from this establishment. Always fresh, always delicious! The service is fast and the employees are always friendly. This place always seems to be busy, however, if you notice the customers eating, they always seem to have a smile on their face! My personal favorite is the pastrami on rye with some thousand island on the side. And hands down, the best onion rings around!

Sara N.

Yelp
Delicious pastrami! I got the pastrami burger which was very satisfying, but if I go again I would order just plain pastrami. The fries were excellent, too. It's all very filling and I couldn't finish all of the food, but if you're craving a pastrami sandwich def stop by. I havent had pastrami in years, but thought I'd try it again since I'm staying near the Hat. The pastrami was really good - peppery and thinly sliced. Enjoy!

Laura S.

Yelp
I wasn't happy with my pastrami because #1 my bun was so smashed into the pastrami it looked gross, #2 it looks like it's a smaller bun, almost like a hot dog bun Can't say I'd want to go back.

Cass F.

Yelp
Always injoy eating their pastrami sandwich. Very delicious and goes well with the chili cheese fries. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Chris T.

Yelp
Disappointed in this sandwhich, 2nd time this has happened where they don't fill the sandwhich. Feels like I'm eating an air sandwhich. Thanks alot
google avatar

Ann T.

Yelp
Glad I gave them a second try. They're open relatively late in comparison to the other restaurants around, especially on a Sunday night. Super clean, nice vintage look on the inside. Service was really fast too. Their drink fountain is touchless, which I have NEVER seen at any other establishment before. Pretty neat in my opinion. We got the: 1) Potato Salad: -Standard mayo based potato salad with a good amount of potato chunks in it. 2) Onion Rings: -It's a massive portion of onion rings, definitely shareable. -Crispy on the outside and the onion on the inside wasn't too stringy or chewy like at some other establishments. 3) Pastrami Dip: -Doesn't come with its own au jus, you'd have to order it on the side. -Chock to the BRIM with pastrami in it. Nice and meaty, not salty at all. -Comes with pickles and mustard in it too. -It's sliced in half on a toasted sandwich bun and it's also enough to share. -A must get for sure. Wish I got this the first time around. Huge portions, decent fast food. Just gotta get the pastrami dip!

Alan T.

Yelp
Man, come on. I just had a steak sandwich from the hat in Glendora about an hour ago.. I was so disappointed the meat was paper thin, one of the half's of the sandwich had small pcs of steak that didn't even cover the bread.. ************TRASH********
google avatar

Angela B.

Yelp
Why are the pastrami's so small, not like the ones back in the day, or the ones you can still get in Alhambra. Such a disappointment. The meat is still good and the rolls are fresh, just not worth the price. Chili fries are great and the cheese burger was big and juicy. 1 pastrami, 1 cheese burger, 1 chili fry, 1 sm fry, and 2 med drinks, $42, I would pay that much for someone who serves me and refills my drink but a burger joint, not worth it!

Daniela A.

Yelp
Service is good and my order came out in 5 mins....in all my 23 years of coming here it's never been dirty always really well kept and clean. I've always gotten the chili cheese fries there definitely a staple. But I've never tried the tuna sandwhich until now and JEEZ ITS GOOD. Perfect ratio of everything and the roll was super soft. The cold cut was also great on these hot days !
