A great hostel at a great price...even for private rooms! All in all, our stay at The Hat exceeded expectations. I subtracted a star because the additional amenities/offerings are not a good value for their price.
We arrived late evening and were surprised to find the lobby packed with people drinking and having a good time. Right off the bat, we loved the vibe of this place. We checked in without issue and were impressed with the additional offerings at The Hat, including nightly sangria/tapas class, bar crawl, walking tour, breakfast, and rooftop bar (well, let's be real...I already knew about the rooftop bar and it was a big factor in our decision to stay there ;)). Our room was also great. Having come from a more expensive hostel in Barcelona where our room was the size of a broom closet, we found our private room at The Hat to be quite spacious. It also included a desk, TV, private bathroom, and, best of all, private balcony! The room was very clean as well.
Note: this location is right near Plaza Mayor. Although there is not a lot of auto traffic, there are a lot of people out and about at most hours of the day. Since we faced the street, we could hear most of this noise. Luckily we were mostly too exhausted to care, but it took some getting used to the first night.
Our first morning, we had an excursion well before breakfast started so we did not get to take advantage of the breakfast we had paid for. The second day, we were excited to load up on the hostel's breakfast before getting our day started. We headed down excitedly only to discover that breakfast consisted of...a loaf of bread with a few different spreads and 1 type of cereal + a couple containers of yogurt. Not exactly what we had in mind for 8 euros apiece a night.
We also participated in the bar crawl, which was 15 euro apiece. We thought that was steep, but it seemed like a good way to get out and meet people. What we werent told was that in addition to the cost of participating, there was essentially a cover at each bar (you had to decide at the door how many drinks you wanted so they could assess what to charge you up front). Also, each of the bars were more "club" than bar. It was an interesting experience, but definitely not worth the money. If we had to do it over again we'd attend the sangria/tapas hour and NOT the bar crawl. You live and you learn.
It was a chilly night when we went up to the rooftop but it's a cute space and I wish we had had more time to enjoy it.
Location was amazing and overall quality better than we expected. Pro tip: most cab drivers are not familiar with the street and will try to take you to Paseo Imperial. Be sure to clarify.
