There are many things to like about The Hat Hostel but unfortunately there are also a couple of significant drawbacks. To start off, the location is amazing, quite literally a stone's throw from Plaza Mayor, close to public transportation, lots of bars, restaurants and basically right in the middle of the action in Madrid. I got the 4 person dorm, it came with a decent sized locker for my smaller bag and I could store my bigger bag under the bed. The room had a window facing the street which was great for ventilation as there was no AC or fan (which during my stay was fine, didn't need either) Social events organized by the staff were great! The sangria class was exceptional and the pub crawl was also super fun, a great way to socialize with other people staying at the hostel. There was a Peruvian girl working there who organized both, unfortunately I cannot remember her name but she was really great. The upstairs terrace was also lovely and a nice place to enjoy breakfast in the morning (which was extra) or a glass of wine in the evening. The staff on the whole were a mixed bag, most of them were fantastic, super friendly and helpful but there were a couple who worked at the terrace upstairs who were simply awful, especially the older blonde lady with the pixie cut, really bad energy. The bathroom situation also left a lot to be desired during my stay. No soap in the soap dispensers, 1/2 showers did not have hot water. I don't know how many people were sharing 2 showers + 2 toilets but it seemed to be really busy, at least on my floor. I had a decent experience overall but I feel like a little more attention to some facilities and a little more kindness on the part of some of the staff would go a long way.

My stay at this hostel was fantastic! The beds were incredibly comfortable, with soft mattresses and fresh linens that made every night’s sleep a dream. The sangria night with the pub crawl was a highlight—delicious sangria, a lively vibe, and a well-organized crawl through the city’s best bars. It was so easy to make friends and have a blast! The rooftop bar was another gem, serving tasty food like fresh tapas and burgers with a stunning view and chill atmosphere. The staff were friendly, and the place felt clean and welcoming. Highly recommend this hostel for comfort and fun!

Great hostel – I had a quiet four bunk room with a private bathroom. Location is easy walking distance to museums and nightlife. Staff is very helpful. Guests skew super young, just something to keep in mind if like me you are far removed from the young category.

Google
This is a very, very nice hostel. For one, the location is incredible, just steps away from a major tourist attraction, the Plaza Mayor. You are steps away from awesome sights and food. And you are 5 min from the nearest Metro station.||Staff was okay. They host activities every day and I enjoyed the “sangria workshop” where I ended up getting to meet some people who I’d befriend for the bar crawl they host every night as well. The bar crawl they offer is actually pretty fun, $20 and you go to a hostel bar to meet other travelers, 3 bars and a club. It’s a fun way to get a taste of Madrid’s nightlife.||I felt very safe in my hostel. There was a diversity of age groups compared to the last hostel I was at in BCN. I loved having access to a bathroom IN my room as well as another one outside if I didn’t want to wake up my roommates. They have hair dryers and an iron if you want to use those. They only have one laundry machine for the entire hostel which was kinda annoying, so we ended up having to go to a separate laundromat to take care of our clothes since it was always taken. ||The showers in the men’s room (not the one in my 6-bed mixed dorm) was suspicious. There was a bunch of bugs in there which was really gross and had me rushing to get out of there. Also, while most of the time I had no trouble getting hot water, one of the showers was unable to.||The rooftop bar is awesome. Sometimes I wanted a refreshment and didn’t want to go too far. They also serve breakfast in the mornings that you can pay for if you are interested. ||I wish top bunks had privacy screens like the bottom bunks but I’m just nitpicking at this point.||Solid hostel, would recommend. 4.5/5

Google
Incredible location, walking distance to everything. Staff is super friendly and helpful 24/7. Sangria making and pub crawl were a great way to meet other travelers. Rooms clean and beds comfy. Amazing stay.

Google
Great location and great staff. We had a private room, and it was a nice room with a balcony overlooking the street. The rooftop restaurant was a fun spot to start the evening and everything is within walking distance. We had a great stay here.

A really modern hostel with great facilities and decoration. It was super clean, we felt safe all of the time and it was full of young people. The location was great too (3 minutes from the plaza mayor) and the stuff was really friendly and helpful! Totally recommended !

Google
The best hostel I’ve been to so far. Great service, super clean, amazing vibe and perfect location to explore Madrid. The only minus is the breakfast as for 7€ it’s not very copious and doesn’t have much of a choice, but since they kindly let me in even after the time I was supposed to arrive I’m giving them 5 stars anyways. Highly recommended!

Yelp
After cross-referencing multi-Google searches, I made a reservation at The Hat Madrid. I was able to land in Madrid and go straight to The Hat by 9:30a. I was able to check-in right away, instead of waiting until 3p to do so. I still had to wait until 3p to actually go to my room. I was able to use the restrooms in the basement to freshen up (it was offered before I asked). I was able to store my luggage at the hostel in a locked room that only staff had access to until I was able to take it to my room. I stayed in the female dorm for 4. The room was clean. Someone does come each day to clean the room (mainly restrooms unless someone is leaving, then fresh sheets for new visitor). The room does have AC that can be used in the evening/night. For the most part, the hostel is quiet (there is some noise from the streets, but that's out of the hostels control. The hostel is within walking distance to Madrid's attractions or to the metro. There is also a roof top bar (that I didn't take advantage of) and the hostel does offer free sangria. I would definitely stay at The Hat hostel again if I return to Madrid. I went as a solo female travel, and felt 100% safe.

Yelp
The Hat... wow! Such an amazing experience. From the moment I walked in, I knew my stay was going to be great. The staff were so welcoming and offered to store my bags while my room was being prepared. The room was so nice and clean, and the beds were comfy and came with a privacy screen which was great! The rooftop was amazinggg, they offered both drinks and food up there. They also had activities for everyone EVERY DAY! And all this for a low price, it was such a great deal. The location was also unbeatable, right next to so many walkable spots. Will definitely stay here again in Madrid!

Yelp
Stayed in a few hostels in Spain and this was definitely my favourite! Got a 4 person co-ed room with ensuite washroom. Place was very clean and washroom had a rain shower that was absolutely perfect after a long day walking in the heat. Staff are very friendly, and great security when you store bags away on check-in/check-out days. Place is complete with a bar and roof top terrace. Most days around 9 PM they offered free sangria and tapas to get to know other travelers. Overall, had a great stay and would 10/10 recommend!

Yelp
Great location! Great staff!! I really have no point-of-reference since his was my first time ever at a hostel. Since drafting this review, I did stay at one other hostel in the states. And I'd say that one was a notch above this, however it's still only two that I can compare. The bathrooms inside the rooms with the "private" bathrooms weren't really very private at all. But, I'm glad there was one inside the room as well as public outside the room, if that was needed. In the morning, so I didn't wake up my roomies, I always went to the public bathroom to use my hairdryer. What's also great is the free little parties that are sponsored there by other brands (usually alcohols) and that they have free tours. I'm bummed that I didn't make one of their free walking city tours, it's really my only real regret. It's very cool they offer these extras! And the rooftop. Well, the hours are limited there. Sometimes it seemed like they'd close so early, which I don't understand but they must have their reasons, I guess. The public can also take up space there, so may not always be room for those staying at the hostel. But, with the location being SO fantastic, there's always another place to find nearby. I'd stay here again and also recommend it to others. Solid choice

Yelp
Solo trip to Madrid and I chose female room only. Location is convenience. Check in is easy. Room is clean. Roof top is great. Free welcome drink is even better. I met some amazing people during my stay in Madrid and we still keep in touch until now! If I ever plan a solo trip to Madrid again, the hat will be my number 1 choice.

Iris R.

Yelp
The hat was a great social hostel in Madrid. Daily activities such as free tours, bar crawls, free sangria, and many many more. The rooftop was beautiful and the cave allows easy socialization around dinner time. The reception is super nice and helpful and allowed a good space to study / work or get a drink. The location was also great. More technical things: beds are comfortable, price is reasonable, and the bathrooms were very clean. Definitely recommend

Yelp
Great place for drinks. The view is somewhat limited but very chill ambiance. Mostly a young crowd but still a good experience and worth checking out if you are in downtown Madrid.

Yelp
A great hostel at a great price...even for private rooms! All in all, our stay at The Hat exceeded expectations. I subtracted a star because the additional amenities/offerings are not a good value for their price. We arrived late evening and were surprised to find the lobby packed with people drinking and having a good time. Right off the bat, we loved the vibe of this place. We checked in without issue and were impressed with the additional offerings at The Hat, including nightly sangria/tapas class, bar crawl, walking tour, breakfast, and rooftop bar (well, let's be real...I already knew about the rooftop bar and it was a big factor in our decision to stay there ;)). Our room was also great. Having come from a more expensive hostel in Barcelona where our room was the size of a broom closet, we found our private room at The Hat to be quite spacious. It also included a desk, TV, private bathroom, and, best of all, private balcony! The room was very clean as well. Note: this location is right near Plaza Mayor. Although there is not a lot of auto traffic, there are a lot of people out and about at most hours of the day. Since we faced the street, we could hear most of this noise. Luckily we were mostly too exhausted to care, but it took some getting used to the first night. Our first morning, we had an excursion well before breakfast started so we did not get to take advantage of the breakfast we had paid for. The second day, we were excited to load up on the hostel's breakfast before getting our day started. We headed down excitedly only to discover that breakfast consisted of...a loaf of bread with a few different spreads and 1 type of cereal + a couple containers of yogurt. Not exactly what we had in mind for 8 euros apiece a night. We also participated in the bar crawl, which was 15 euro apiece. We thought that was steep, but it seemed like a good way to get out and meet people. What we werent told was that in addition to the cost of participating, there was essentially a cover at each bar (you had to decide at the door how many drinks you wanted so they could assess what to charge you up front). Also, each of the bars were more "club" than bar. It was an interesting experience, but definitely not worth the money. If we had to do it over again we'd attend the sangria/tapas hour and NOT the bar crawl. You live and you learn. It was a chilly night when we went up to the rooftop but it's a cute space and I wish we had had more time to enjoy it. Location was amazing and overall quality better than we expected. Pro tip: most cab drivers are not familiar with the street and will try to take you to Paseo Imperial. Be sure to clarify.

Yelp
Pros: Great location, friendly and helpful staff, nice lobby, great showers. Cons: * There was a bed bug in our first room, so we had to move rooms. * I question the security of this hostel because after moving rooms, our old keys still worked. At one point, a random and creepy man entered our room, drunk and cross-eyed. * Rooms got uncomfortably hot at night

Yelp
I love The Hat!! Cute decor and spacious rooms. I especially love the rooftop terrace that has views spanning the city. ALSO, the WiFi is out of this world! P.S. It's on Calle Imperial and not Paseo Imperial. I know this because I'm an idiot and found out the hard way with nearly 100 lbs of baggage D:

Yelp
I love this hostel! I've stayed here before and will probably be back again when I come back to Madrid! For the cheap price, you can't beat the location. The staff are always super nice, the dorms and bathrooms are clean and super comfy, and the WiFi is fast. They have a rooftop bar that is also picture perfect. 10/10 would recommend this hostel to anyone!

Yelp
I've been to numerous countries and stayed in my share of hostels, The Hat is by far the best one I've ever encountered. Location: hop, skip and a jump away from Plaza Del Sol- very famous/popular area with interesting history and awesome shopping. Also down the street from Plaza Mayor (too touristy for my taste but you were never far from food/drinks) staff: so incredibly friendly from start to finish: EUGENIO helped out my friend and I, and he could not have been any sweeter. He definitely helped make the experience a good one. Also they offered us a free walking tour (it's 3ish hours but you can leave from the group whenever you want to) it's a nice way to see some of the city sites and get some history behind it all We got a private 4 bed/female room with a bathroom- wow! So clean, you get half of a cubby/cabinet and you can rent locks from the front desk (or bring your own) can also rent towels for 2.50 for your entire stay. Did I mention they have AIR CONDITIONING! Such a nice commodity to have especially in a hostel, was very grateful as Madrid is known to be the sunniest city in Europe ;) They have a dining area downstairs (called the Cave) where they serve breakfast [nothing incredibly special BUT they do have soy milk and gluten free/dairy free options which I thought really showed they go the extra mile] The decor here is absolutely adorable- think Urban Outfitters-y- they have a rooftop bar that serves beer, sangria, mojitos and a selection of tapas. Each floor, going up/down the stairs, has a cute saying or mantra, that I thought had a nice touch. Will definitely be recommending to my friends and use for my future stays in Madrid!

Yelp
I'm so obsessed! This was my first hostel experience and it was so great! Since it was my first experience I chose the 6 bed female dorm with the bathroom shower in the room. The shower was amazing... I was not expecting such a nice shower in a hostel. The beds and blankets were very comfy as well. Our lockers had plenty of space for our belongings, just make sure you bring your own padlock. The breakfast wasn't anything fancy but it's what you would expect for so cheap. The airport transfer was super convenient and cheap. But my FAVORITE part was the rooftop bar! It was really nice up there and the wine was very reasonably priced. The cocktails were a bit pricey so the wine and beer were the way to go. Overall, this was the best hostel experience I could've had. I'm really glad we stayed here!

Yelp
I booked this Hostel on Hostel World and it did not disappoint. I stayed in the private double room and it was very clean with just the right amount of space. The breakfast for €3 was very good. I will definitely stay here again next time I am in Madrid. They also offer a walking tour in the morning and bar crawl at night. The employees there are very knowledgeable for any questions about the city!

Yelp
An instant fan of this hostel. Great location. Within walking distance of the city centre tourist sites and not far from the central train station by taxi or on foot. The staff are very welcoming and the lobby bar has a nice chilled feel about it. The breakfast is served downstairs from the reception in a room with a cellar feel about it which is cosy but nice. The beds are comfortable and the bathrooms clean and the water hot. Best of all would be the roof top terrace and bar. A wonderful way to finish long day or spend an afternoon relaxing in the sunshine with a cold drink. Certainly a place I would stay again should I find myself in Madrid

Yelp
The Hat was an unexpected stay. It was the 2nd hostel I tried. The folks were very accommodating. Loved the fact that there was a lobby bar and a rooftop bar (was even given a free beer tab for the rooftop). It's a native-favorite so it's always packed. The showers were awesome. Solid amount of hot pressured water. Bathrooms were clean. Staff was friendly. The beds are pretty nice, pillows solid. You can rent a plushy towel for 3.5 Euro's for your stay. I'll warn you that if you leave your bed lamp on and accidentally touch the metal or the bulb, you will burn. I'd suggest putting some sort of cover over it because it really hurt. They had a nightly sangria and tapas night free which was awesome - got to meet people from all over. They have a bar crawl that I wasn't a huge fan of - seemed like cheap bars that were only made for tourists IMO but the deal isn't bad at all. The walking tour was amazing. I can't remember the lady's name but she's from Colombia and very funny/charming. Definitely recommend giving her a nice tip at the end of the tour :) All in all, great location! Definitely awesome to be near Plaza De Mayor and famous food spots for late night snacks (Takos and the calamari sandwich!)

Yelp
Cool vibe ... cute rooftop but mostly hung out inside by the lobby. Good vibe and drinks were tasty.

Erin K.

Yelp
Great feelings in the rooftop Briefly wished it had more of a view but the atmosphere and decor are pretty great. Surprised by how much we all liked the vermouth.. Even more than the wine! Didn't try the food but great place for drinks.

Yelp
I loved this place! The rooftop is really nice and has a lot of greenery. The staff is very friendly and prompt with their service. I didn't eat here, but the drinks were good and were a reasonable price. The only downside is that the rooftop is often full so you may have to wait a bit for a table. I went on a weekday and the wait was only about 15 min, but on a weekend you may have to wait up to an hour.

Yelp
So I found out from the owner that this hostel is very new. What a great place too. This hostel is right in the center of almost everything. You can walk to malls, pubs, restaurants and so much more. The staff is incredibly friendly and gives amazing service. If you need a taxi or directions, no problem. There is a bar on the top floor which exits onto a balcony where you can sit and eat. They serve great tapas and food for a decent price starting at 8pm. The bar closes at midnight but many other night festivities begin. There are many local bars for everyone. If you are gay or straight there's something for you. The room I stayed in was with 4 beds and a private bathroom. Great choice amazing shower. Now for the downsides: They do not wash the quilts. I must have seen 3 people come and go in my room and they never changed the blanket. They just roll it up and put it in the closet. It makes me wonder how many people before slept for many days under the same blanket. Gross! Also on the side of the hostel I was on it was incredibly noisy. I was here during the weekend before Xmas so maybe it isn't so loud other times of the year. They also play loud music within the hostel till like midnight which was also too loud. Other than that everything else was great! I would stay here one more time on a slow time of the year to see if the noise is the same level. If it is then I won't come again. But great place filled with young adults.
google avatar

Martina-MacLean L.

Yelp
Ok hostel. Good location. They have nightly pub crawls that go out as a group & end at a nightclub (free entry w/ pub crawl fee), which is really neat! However, the customer service in the upstairs bar is terrible. The reception is slightly better, depending on the time you visit it. Also, the towels cost $$ which seems annoying if you're already paying for a room.
google avatar

Vernita G.

Yelp
Really great experience. The staff is so accommodating and nice. The rooftop bar is adorable and great.

Yelp
This is the best hostel I've ever been in! They are amazingly accommodating, incredibly clean and the location is unbeatable. Close to everything, you can walk anywhere or take a quick Metro ride. The staff is wonderful- they offer a laundry room, rooftop bar and a flamenco show in Thursday night. Seems to be a place where locals go for drinks as well- full of young people! It was a great experience.

Yelp
Everything about this place is incredible. (In order of appearance) THE OUTSIDE: Very modern look, we thought we were walking into a 5 star hotel! Also, it is in the best location. Small convenience store across the street, plaza within a few hundred feet, and great food all around! THE INSIDE: Very welcoming, we took our time checking in because we were wondering around the lobby taking pictures and admiring the ambience. Spectacular! THE STAFF: This is the best part of our stay here, from the moment you walk in they greet you with a smile. They will accommodate any need you may have. From the front desk to the cleaning staff, the breakfast staff, the bar staff, everyone in here works very hard love what they do, and it shows. I couldn't be more happy about our stay with them. ROOFTOP TERRACE: INCREDIBLE! Great drinks, friendly and efficient staff, great views, well maintained. What more could you ask for?! The food was excellent and everything was very reasonably priced! BREAKFAST: Another one of my favorite parts of the trip ;) Fresh bread from a local bakery, incredible homemade spread, endless coffee (mmmmmm) and the best staff around. OVERALL: 5 stars. Hands down. This is our first stop on our 7 week vacation and we don't want to leave. The hospitality has been incredible and honestly, I can't think of 1 bad thing to say about our stay here. Thanks again The Hat! We can't wait to come back and stay with you guys again!

Yelp
The Hat is as good as it gets in terms of hostels! It is so so clean and has a very cool ambience. There is a nice bar downstairs in the lobby with couches to hang around at. The people at the front desk were very nice and spoke English if you are not familiar with Spanish. The sheets seemed clean and came with a down comforter. Each bed had its own personal shelf and outlet (Outlets are key in hostels!). There were also big drawers for each bed that you were able to put a lock on for your stuff. Clean sinks and showers.. Could not ask for more! I paid 17 euro for a bed in a 8 person female dormitory.. Bargain! Highly, highly recommend. Oh, and there is a shuttle to the airport for 9 euros! Way cheaper than a taxi would cost. Wifi worked great too!
