The 38 Best Restaurants in Toronto, Canada | Eater

"Launching a pop-up in 2018, building a legion of followers on social media, relocating from his Dundas West digs to a plush 26-seater in Kensington Market — through it all, chef Jerome Robinson has stayed faithful to fried chicken. Case-in-point: the lethargy-inducing Big Ass Mac and Cheese, a carb-lover’s dream consisting of five cheeses blended with macaroni and topped with two deep-fried thighs tossed in Carolina butter sauce. Pair it with the creamy cabbage coleslaw, a valiant attempt at your daily vegetables. The ’90s hip-hop vibes and local graffiti from the old space permeate the new one, but now there’s an intimate four-seater rail bar where you can watch all the action unfold in the kitchen. Vibe check: Thumping ’90s hip-hop and local graffiti give a high-energy feel, but there’s also an intimate four-seater rail bar where you can watch all the action unfold in the kitchen." - Tiffany Leigh

The 38 Essential Toronto Restaurants

"Can a fried chicken sandwich be distinguished and delightful? Chef Jerome Robinson and his legion of #friedchickenlovers definitely think so. Ever the consummate hype man, Robinson welcomes diners to his cozy space with ’90s hip-hop, free-to-play NBA Jam arcade machines, and local graffiti plastered on the walls. Then he presents you with epic sandwiches wide enough to rest your head on. The Big Ass Chicken Sandwich requires you to unhinge your jaw to enjoy two deep-fried thighs tossed in Carolina butter sauce and finished with spicy ranch, crunchy slaw, and sweet-and-sour pickles. If you’re hankering to carb load, try the Mac & Charlie, a franken-grilled cheese stuffed with mac and cheese. And if you must consume a vegetable of some kind, check out the deep-fried Brussels sprouts massaged with a balsamic-honey reduction." - Tiffany Leigh

Shelby; and that's all really

Soon as I walked in, I knew the chicken would be delicious. And I was right, I got the two piece chicken combo and it was absolutely heavenly. Decadent, moist chicken, that's perfectly spicy, with not so much that it overwhelms. If anything, it brings out the flavor. With it, I had probably one of the best sauces I've ever tasted. I'm not sure what they put in their spicy ranch, but I could smother just about anything in it and have it taste good. I was surprised that there weren't more people in there!!! The owners were so nice too, they gave me three pieces of chicken instead of the two!!! Didn't get a picture of that though, I was so excited that I ate one right away 😭

Last weekend I had visited downtown with my cousin, we are in Kensington market a lot when we do see each other so this was the perfect area to find something to eat. Upon arrival, we were informed by the owner that they had no more mac & cheese left for the day and unfortunately, they were sold out. Despite that minor hiccup, our interaction with the owner - Chef Jerome Robinson, and my cousin and I ate huge advocates for supporting black owned businesses, is what drove us to stay. We both ordered a chicken sandwich with hot honey - Delicious cooked to perfection and super flavourful. As we were finishing our food, the owner came up to our table and requested that we not leave as one of his staff went out to go get some ingredients to make mac & cheese for us on the house. We were very shocked and so grateful and asked if we could tip him, but he was So humble, and assured us that a review is tip enough. The mac & cheese was phenomenal, super creamy, full of seasoning and was well balanced with pasta and cheese. The atmosphere of the food and the service was an overall 10 out of 10! It was an amazing experience and I cannot recommend this place enough. A must try when you make a trip to Toronto!

Me and my friend ordered this bigass burger and no joke—it was so huge and juicy, it was actually hard to take a bite 😂 Every bite was packed with flavor and cooked perfectly. Honestly felt like finding a hidden gem. It wasn’t super crowded, but the vibe was on point—cool art on the walls, laid-back atmosphere, just a good spot to chill and enjoy a great meal. Highly recommend checking this place out if you're craving something legit. And if you're into food photography, the setup’s got some character too 👇

We wanted to give this place another try. We had been excited about it all week. As it’s not something we’d typically eat for dinner. The Big Ass Chicken Sandwich was absolutely delicious — we’ll definitely be coming back for that. Unfortunately, we were originally there for their Big Ass Mac, and it ended up being a huge letdown. The description said it comes with two pieces of chicken tossed in sauce, but when we got it home, we realized it was just two chicken tenders with barely any sauce at all. I definitely thought it would be much bigger, given the name and its price. Check out my pic. The chicken itself was cooked well, but it lacked any flavor or seasoning. The macaroni was also very underwhelming — just bland and comparable to something we could’ve microwaved. Overall, we were pretty disappointed. The hype doesn’t feel justified anymore. It was a lot better when they first opened, but sadly, it seems like they’ve lost the passion that made it special in the beginning.

Went to Kensington Market to pickup a few things. My friend recommended eating at Heartbreak Chef. First walk into the restaurant loved the layout of restaurant the decor, it gave a very current vibe. We were greeted by the owner Jerome and one of his servers. Jerome gave a few popular options that we should try. We decided on the fried chicken sandwich with a side of Mac and Cheese. The wait time to receive our shared meal wasn’t long at all. The presentation, portion size and taste was amazing and worth the visit to Heartbreak Chef. I will definitely go back to eat there again. The service and atmosphere at the restaurant is one that will have me recommended Heartbreak Chef to others to eat at as well.
