The 38 Best Restaurants in Toronto, Canada | Eater

"Launching a pop-up in 2018, building a legion of followers on social media, relocating from his Dundas West digs to a plush 26-seater in Kensington Market — through it all, chef Jerome Robinson has stayed faithful to fried chicken. Case-in-point: the lethargy-inducing Big Ass Mac and Cheese, a carb-lover’s dream consisting of five cheeses blended with macaroni and topped with two deep-fried thighs tossed in Carolina butter sauce. Pair it with the creamy cabbage coleslaw, a valiant attempt at your daily vegetables. The ’90s hip-hop vibes and local graffiti from the old space permeate the new one, but now there’s an intimate four-seater rail bar where you can watch all the action unfold in the kitchen. Vibe check: Thumping ’90s hip-hop and local graffiti give a high-energy feel, but there’s also an intimate four-seater rail bar where you can watch all the action unfold in the kitchen." - Tiffany Leigh

The 38 Essential Toronto Restaurants

"Can a fried chicken sandwich be distinguished and delightful? Chef Jerome Robinson and his legion of #friedchickenlovers definitely think so. Ever the consummate hype man, Robinson welcomes diners to his cozy space with ’90s hip-hop, free-to-play NBA Jam arcade machines, and local graffiti plastered on the walls. Then he presents you with epic sandwiches wide enough to rest your head on. The Big Ass Chicken Sandwich requires you to unhinge your jaw to enjoy two deep-fried thighs tossed in Carolina butter sauce and finished with spicy ranch, crunchy slaw, and sweet-and-sour pickles. If you’re hankering to carb load, try the Mac & Charlie, a franken-grilled cheese stuffed with mac and cheese. And if you must consume a vegetable of some kind, check out the deep-fried Brussels sprouts massaged with a balsamic-honey reduction." - Tiffany Leigh

Google
I just found my new favourite fried chicken sandwich in Toronto (sorry PG Clucks). It’s BIG with not ONE but TWO big ol’pieces of fried chicken. It’s JUICY. It’s SAUCY. It’s SPICY. It’s NOT EXPENSIVE. The Mac and cheese was also so flavourful (and I’m usually disappointed by Mac and cheese at restaurants). To top it all off, the staff were super friendly and welcoming, the food came out fast! Loved the R&B playlist btw! I’ll definitely be back.

Google
Absolutely phenomenal chicken sandwich! I got the Dutty Chicken Sandwich and the amount of FLAVOUR? With the tartness and juiciness of the pineapple and the crunch of the slaw? Beyond comfort and exactly what I needed before a night out. Massive as well. Chicken was juicy, and although not as crunchy as other chicken sandwiches, the flavour made up for it tenfold. Would come back in a heart(break)beat!

I got the big a chicken sandwich which was pretty good. Portion size was amazing and the sandwich was loaded so you are definitely getting what you paid for and it’s very filling. I personally thought the chicken and sauce were okay. I liked the potato wedges that came with it. I think the service and atmosphere was very nice. If I went again I would want to try another item

Soon as I walked in, I knew the chicken would be delicious. And I was right, I got the two piece chicken combo and it was absolutely heavenly. Decadent, moist chicken, that's perfectly spicy, with not so much that it overwhelms. If anything, it brings out the flavor. With it, I had probably one of the best sauces I've ever tasted. I'm not sure what they put in their spicy ranch, but I could smother just about anything in it and have it taste good. I was surprised that there weren't more people in there!!! The owners were so nice too, they gave me three pieces of chicken instead of the two!!! Didn't get a picture of that though, I was so excited that I ate one right away 😭

the mac and charlie is kind of everything you could ever want to eat — grilled cheese, mac n cheese, and chicken — and so obviously it was yummy, but maybe it didn’t live up to my ridiculously high expectations..? even though the chicken was incredibly moist and juicy, i felt like the sandwich was lacking flavour. it wasn’t “oozing” with mac n cheese as advertised, and i could barely taste it, save for a little hint of cheddar in a few bites? still, there were some really great things about this sandwich — i loved how crunchy sourdough was, and i thought the slight sourness and oiliness from the toast gave a super interesting and unique taste in a chicken sandwich like this. the deep flavour of the fried coating on the chicken in some bites were also nice. PRO TIP: lather some of the coleslaw and spicy ranch (from the wedges) onto the sandwich, and that creates an immaculate tasting sandwich with way more flavour. the coleslaw was seriously SOOOOO creamy and crunchy and cold and SWEET and provided such a fresh touch to everything else. the wedges were meh, they were super mushy and piping hot and maybe missing some seasoning? it comes with some tangy ranch (that isn’t really that spicy), so that was nice. portion sizes were also a bit disappointing, especially the $6 cajun wedges.

I was on an extended tour of downtown Toronto and needed something to eat so I was checking out all the amazing food choices at Kensington Market and found Heartbreak Chef. The poutine was excellent, the chicken was massive and tasted amazing, and I was full before I finished the entire thing. Their card reader was down which made it a bit of a hassle to order since I had to do it through their site but the wait times were average and food was great. I’d definitely go back for sure.

Best food I’ve had in a HOT minute. Came here after walking around, and had the poutine + chicken sandwich combo. The owner was *so* amiable and attentive to us. The interior was so cozy and fun to look at. You will not be disappointed at ALL! Truly blown away by the flavours and portions! I 100% recommend trying this spot out!
