the second I stepped in, thin lizzy's blaring, and I knew I was at the right spot. end up shooting the breeze with kevin (the owner, who's the friggin’ man) and just has a wild and vast array of knowledge who's always happy to share his personal experiences that truly made the trip in worth it. scored some amazing records, got my 1 year old a onesie, and Kevin hooked me up with a box to send them home, i'll be back. yeah yeah yeah the shop across is "bigger" but god luck and good speed finding anyone with half a personality in there. thanks kevin, I appreciate you!

So I had to travel to Utah and while I was there, I searched heavy metal and the heavy metal shop is the first thing that popped up,so I knew I must head there and boy I’m glad I did. I felt like a kid pulling up to Candy store(a heavy metal candy store) and I couldn’t be happier. I walked in and was greeted by Kevin and Casy two really awesome people and the metal was flowing through the speakers they were playing Gojira today. Hell yeah now to all the great things in their store, they have records shirts patches hats, posters, stickers mugs everything a heavy metal fan would like to have and the cool stories that Kevin has is so awesome if you get time and your ins Salt Lake City, you must stop by the heavy metal shop if this is your thing🤘🏼💀🤘🏼

I love this place, and Kevin the owner. He is such a nice person, and I really enjoyed meeting him. I would definitely recommend going to check out all of the awesome HEAVY METAL stuff! And say hi to Keven for me!

Absolutely love this place. We live out of state but visit once a year, this shop is always on our list. Kevin is a super laid back awesome dude. Stop in, get a shirt, maybe some socks or a hat. You won’t be disappointed. The new location is really great. I miss the graffiti on the old building, but the new place is still awesome.

Fun shop, cool merchandise, friendly service. It's always fun seeing their logo around town & at concerts. Now I have a few logo items myself & for Christmas gifts.

I take everyone visiting here, it is an iconic SLC shop. Love the new location it's in such a great spot. I will continue to fill my closet with their merch for years to come. (Cute dog is a major bonus)

This is a really really cool shop. You feel the grunge, the punk, the heavy metal vibes! I was able to pick up heavy metal shirts for $25. I love that they have Salt Lake City tagged on them to represent. They have posters, stickers, mugs, shirts, vinyls, etc. This store makes for really neat gifts for the rock and roll lovers. It's on the strip of 900 south and a great location to jump from shop to shop. Super great location!

Got to check out the new space. Got a tshirt with the logo that fits perfectly. Guy working was super friendly and was playing good music

An SLC gem for fans of heavy metal music and culture. Music, art, logo apparel with an attitude, sometimes even a small show by a traveling band passing through. A must go-to if in town and metal music is your thing. Owner Kevin is a great dude who's forgotten more about metal than anyone will ever know.

Stopped in to see what they might have on hand that I could give a guy I was sort of dating for Valentine's Day. The gentleman that was working ( the owner ) was so helpful. He came over and showed me a couple things since my guy is a kiss/Slayer fan amongst others but those are his favorites. They had the coolest collection of shirts, vinyl, sweatshirts, etc but check out the cool puzzle I picked up. I posted a photo of it! Parking is a bit tight so plan accordingly for street parking. It is worth stopping in and checking them out. I know I will def be going

This is the best shop in Salt Lake City, probably in the whole Rocky Mountain area. The quality of the pink hoodies are great I would like to see more brands of hoodies that are better than Gildan but not complaining. Support this store! Especially with covid.

Kevin is a paragon of customer service and cool. I have family who live in SLC and as I'm 666% metalhead, this place is a MUST STOP for me every time I visit. I first visited in December and when I returned in May, Kevin remembered me! It's little things like that that make this place a gold mine in the world of corporate shops. They have everything you could possibly want in metal and hard rock merch. CD's, vinyl, posters, shirts, videos...you name it! I can't stress enough the importance of giving your respect to Kevin and buying a Heavy Metal Shop shirt to wear when you visit Temple Square! x-D

Wall to wall metal! Vinyl, CDs, posters, stickers, patches, pins, hats and more. The owner told me some good stories about some of the gear on display (tighty-whitey underwear signed by The Dwarves). The shop has been there since the 80s and is still going strong. SLC has a strong metal scene and this is place to get new and old music and merch. I'm really glad I got to visit and chat for a bit. They can do mail order also.

Can we all just say hell yes to The Heavy Metal Shop? One of the few record stores in Utah that isn't filled with millennial hipsters working the store. And the only one I know of that carries a variety of rock and metal albums. As everyone else has said Kevin is a cool and nice guy. Want to talk metal? You found the guy! He's just flat out awesome. The store is located down an alley in downtown Salt Lake off State Street. It's a pretty small place but big enough to host concerts. Lots of iconic merch for everyone in the family. You can find an assortment of CD's, tapes and vinyl. If you can't find something there he can try and order it for you. That's customer service! He does Record Store Day so that's also a giant plus if you wanted to get one of those exclusive releases. He has a board of metal (different styles) bands coming to to the 801 if you needed to be in the know. Even if you aren't looking for anything in particular, go check it out

Surprisingly small, but cool shop. The guy there was really nice and we talked to him for a bit. I wish they had more vinyl, but I'd go back. They had mainly metal and some punk, but nothing too obscure.

Some of the very worst changes, to my mind, in the history of Sugarhood, were the changes that forced this place downtown and Experienced Books (RIP), two of my most favorite haunts, either out of the area or to the dustbin of history. This is the survivor and it moved to a not very convenient place and I spent a lot of time meaning to, but constantly forgetting, to go check it out. A few other times, I tried, but couldn't fight the parking enough in the time I had. Once I finally made it there... ...ok, look. The Sugarhood space was nice and large and full of stuff, including a lot of the textiles that this place is similarly full of. All to the good and it was cruelly ripped away to make...a hole. This place is not anywhere near as spacious, which means a whole lot less of things and dammit... Anyway, this place is a severely truncated version and like all places in the area, lots of the downtown wildlife strolling on by. Inside is a smattering of CDs and even some cassettes, along with a lot more vinyl, some very cool collectibles, a shit ton of local stuff and, of course, lots and lots of store merchandise in various wearables, apparel and other textile product. I've lost count of how many bands I've discovered here and indeed, there are monitors playing live DVDs, which happily hearkens to my metalhead sensibilities, yet because of those discoveries, this current state I can't help but find tragic on some level. There is no online storefront, aside from the wearables and while I'm glad it's still around, thanks to the absurd power of nostalgia, I wish it could have continued at that level. Still, it's part of the fabric, the pulse, the history of the city and I did a bad thing staying away so long. We all should support it; we all need to support it. When it's gone, there will never be another like it.

I bought my Metallica, Anthrax, and The Stench cassettes here when it was in Sandy, near a Fred Meyer. The owner's baby would be in a walker. Amazing store.

Kevin is the real thing. Tried and true from day one. I frequented this place since I was a young kid. Even with the digital age taking down local business, Kevin still stands and loves what he's created. This nostalgic place will always be a huge part of me and anyone who's been lucky enough to be in its doors throughout the years. Thanks for your hard work and passion.

Heavy Metal Shop, best shop in the United States in my opinion. This is the lead singer from the band Minion..When we started out Kevin helped us sell our cds at his shop..Screw the internet go buy the cds so bands like us make money and continue bangin for the people from the SLC..Heavy Metal Shop is where its at, where else you going to find Cannibal Corpse, Heaven Shall Burn and clothing to match? Support your local bands and only metal shop! MINION...

I stopped in while I was in SLC attending a concert (Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax). My friends and I poured in to the tiny shop. It is a humble place and yet has anything you could desire. I was stoked to see his wide selection of t-shirts. I was like a kid in a candy shop! However....The owners attitude seemed unsettling. He really didn't pay too much attention to us and was blunt. Not the friendliest guy. We tried being friendly, but only got the cold shoulder. I wrote it off as maybe he had a bad day. I would give it another shot next time I am down in SLC. I am not easily scared away from a place like this!!! \m/

Five stars for being legit. This stores is a step back into the 80's when metallica and megadeath were in their prime. The owner stays true to heavy metal and you'll find it in vinyl to cd. There is a great array of shirts and other merch, I recommend a heavy metal hooey, I bought one for my 3 year old as well. Do not miss the heavy metal shop it's an experience.

Help keep Kevin in business - go buy some gear!!! Record stores are dropping like flies with the advent of iTunes. The Heavy Metal Shop is classic. SUPPORT IT!!

Awesome shop! For many reasons but here's a small example: I ordered a hoodie online for my husband's upcoming birthday and I couldn't find how to track it online. I called in and they explained that someone was out of town and would be shipped Monday (today is a Thursday). I spoke with Patrick & he said that if I needed it sooner he would literally drive to meet me somewhere (I live in Utah county). Although it was the kindest offer, it wasn't imperative that I got it right fucking now.. ya know? Anyways I normally don't review too many places but these guys deserve props because they are ALWAYS kind and helpful anytime we've been there and today's experience proved it even more + it's just a cool shop with good quality shit. Check them out
