The 17 Best Restaurants in Columbia, Home of the University of Missouri | Eater

"The Berg has been around since 1963, even surviving a complete rebuild when a fire destroyed the building in 2003. This spot is the classic hangout for college students, whether they’re recovering from a late night, satisfying a craving for toasted ravioli (one of Columbia’s favorite dishes), or sharing a round of drinks. Summer nights on the roof are memorable, with the occasional concert livening things up." - Chloe Konrad

The Heidelberg is a popular American-German restaurant and pub for both locals and tourists. The Heidleberg is located downtown Columbia, right next to the University of Missouri campus. This spot has the best happy hour deals I have ever seen: buy 1 get 1 appetizers! I always order the toasted raviolis and breaded mushrooms when I am at Heidelberg! This spot also has amazing Rueben sandwiches! There is plenty of seating in the downstairs area, as well as the open patio! On a sunny day, enjoying a nice beverage and appetizers on the patio at the Heidelberg is a must!

Great food! Great service! Rueben awesome and fried chicken salad were great! I'd love to come back!

If I could give this place a sweep I would. The worst food I have ever had. Everything came out cold!! I fairly certain the server knew the food was awful! Do not eat here! Wish I could get my $80 dollars back.

Google
Not a bad place to grab drinks and eat some average bar food. None of the food really stood out to me, like something authentic or original. pretty much the same things as anywhere. Still wishing they had the half a star I would give this place 3 1/2 stars. If you do stay around the downtown area it would be a good place to drink.

Cloudy Cowboy

Google
Great place with a good selection of food and beer. The upper balcony is nice for enjoying the weather. The food was good, the patio could use a good cleaning. Other than that no complaints. Conveniently located across from the campus.

**I apologize for the book, but this was not a good experience at all** We were celebrating my friend's birthday this weekend so there was a group of 5 of us that came in and got a table. We ordered apps at 12:06pm and we recieved them at 12:52pm. My husband and I got the fried ravioli for our app and when they came they were really good. I only received my drink (everyone else had their drink and I ordered water) when we asked the server who brought our apps and our server never acknowledge it after stopping by super quick 3 different times before that. But our server was nice when she would stop by. We ordered our entrees at 12:17pm. We received our food at 1:02pm. The male who brought our food was really rude and basically slammed our food down. He also argued with my husband over what my husband ordered. My husband ordered the Cajun burger with fries and extra cheese sauce. I ordered the bacon and Cheddar chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries. My husband had to ask for his fries he ordered because they gave him sweet potatoes fries instead of regular fries and had to ask for his cheese sauce. His burger was super dry. My sweet potato fries tasted burnt and they weren't very good. My sauce looked like someone wiped their finger through it. My sandwich was not good, the cheese did not do this sandwich any good. The chicken though was moist. Two people at our table got coleslaw and it looked questionable and one had a curton in their food. People at our table said their main foods were dry. One got sweet potato fries they never recieved so my husband gave him the sweet potato fries he never ordered, but that my husband recieved. One of our friends never recieved her food when we did. She received it at 1:08pm, but we weren't told her food would arrive late and she questioned if she would get her food. It was busy, but there were plenty of tables open and our waitress didn't check in with us much. We asked for the checks and boxes and we got our checks after about 5 minutes. The service was slow the entire time, but they were quick to come clear our plates from the table and one of our members still had a bunch of food on her plate and they never asked if she wanted a box. Granted she didn't plan on taking her food with her because of how much she disliked it. This was mine and 2 others first time here and it was an unfortunate experience. I will not be back based on this experience. We finally left after being there for an hour and a half. If I could have I would have left a no star review.

Google
They have a lovely outdoor seating area for some nice fresh air while dining. The staff was beyond friendly and very pleasant. The drinks ordered were lovely. The food was fantastic as well. Never been before but will definitely be back!

Google
First time here. Bar atmosphere was nice. Has a patio upstairs which gave us a good view of the MU campus. Ordered six on the beach drinks, spinach and artichoke dip, French dip and potato skins. Everything was amazing. Staff was kind and helpful

Yelp
The Heidelberg in Columbia: A Culinary Journey in the Heart of Campus My recent visit to The Heidelberg in Columbia, Missouri, offered a mixed experience that unfolded into a delightful culinary journey. Walking in, the initial welcome was somewhat lacking, with no greetings at the door, and the host's approach was a bit unconventional, pointing to a table in the vast room. However, once settled, the service took a turn for the better. Our waitress provided excellent recommendations, guiding us through a menu filled with tempting options. I decided to try the French dip with Cajun fries, a truly amazing choice. The au jus accompanying the French dip added a burst of flavor that enhanced the overall taste. The Frisco burger, paired with Cajun fries, was equally delightful, and the drink served went down smooth, contributing to the enjoyable experience. While the service and flavors impressed, the challenge lay in street parking, as no parking lot was readily apparent. Located in the heart of the University of Missouri's campus, The Heidelberg offers a unique blend of campus charm and culinary excellence. If you're willing to venture through the initial entry, The Heidelberg promises a rewarding dining experience with a menu that satisfies both taste buds and curiosity.

Yelp
Terrible food. Sent potato skins back once. Cold and inedible. French dip not good either.

Yelp
It's been years since we've been to this MU Institution. So happy to see it was still open. However, I wish I just had hung into the fond memories. Update on food. Patty melt was very disappointing. The thinnest cheese possible and the meat did not taste good at all. The German potato salad was still wonderful. Now let's talk restrooms and general cleanliness. Oh how I wish I could. It was disgusting through and through. And this is just the start. The floors throughout are a sticky mess.

Yelp
A true Columbia staple spot. Food is always great. I will say that the food is a tad bit pricey in my opinion. Don't expect too much from the place from an ambiance stand point. Nothing too spectacular plus at times it can get a bit The servers are always incredibly polite. I got the veggie burger which was incredible per usual. An ode to old faithful. Looking forward to coming back!

Yelp
This is a basic college bar/restaurant. Nothing special. Food isn't bad. The service has been better than average. They have good drink specials and great happy hour. Also a wide variety of beers. - Chicken tenders (3.5/5): very basic but still pretty good. - Sweet potato fries (2/5): not very tasty, tasted frozen. Maybe they weren't cooked right but these were not good. - Buffalo chicken dip (4/5): the best appetizer we've had there. Buffalo is always yummy and this one tastes just like the Trader Joe's version which is delicious. Probably would come back here, but mainly for the happy hour!

Yelp
This place is a tale of two stories and here's why: A. The German related dish of the wurst plate - has a few homemade items which had it being great (as German food goes). The bratwurst and knackwurst were made in a small town outside of Columbia. The Kraut is also being made by someone...and it was darn good too. And the German potato salad - has a great blend of apple cider vinegar, sugar and bacon....that this side dish was pretty great. My 4 stars is for this dish only. B. Fish and chips. Pre-fab quick fried stuff. That not only is not something to "write home about".....but is a plate to avoid. If you're craving fish...again, avoid the disappointment of this low-end pre-fab item. C. Country Fried Steak dinner. I didn't personally eat, but my son will also know what is a good representation of a country fried steak. "It was nothing" I believe was the response. Did appear to be some powder/bag gravy. Mashed potatoes were reasonable....but again...topped with gravy which is clearly lackluster. The place has been around for 50+ years. The German food I had was quite good. And though the burgers and such may be good....when I see the lower end Cisco type products being used for other dishes...I don't hold my breath on the other items being special. But to hang out and drink some beers...sure...this place would always been good for just that too....

Yelp
One of my Favorite restaurants to visit when I'm in Columbia. The sweet potato fries are a MUST!!! (I normally don't even like sweet potatoes but their fries are just amazing.)

Yelp
Food was delicious! My husband and I went with my mother in law, brother in law and friends last Saturday night around 5 PM and the place was packed! So loud I could barely hear myself think! But the food was awesome. Definitely will come back for those happy hour deals as well!

Yelp
This place is an old faithful. It is tucked into downtown Columbia amongst many of the other staple restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and other mom and pop store friends. It has been around for years and is in walking distance from some of the campus buildings like the law school. The drinks here have a strong pour for the dollar value and you can expect your normal run-of-the-mill bar food, but it is the nostalgia that you'll be coming back for!

Scott F.

Yelp
So disappointed. Arby's French Dip is far better and so is the service. Was really looking forward to dinner in my favorite restaurant on a visit back home. Wasn't the same and, sadly, I won't be back.

Jennifer K.

Yelp
Didn't have to wait long for the food to come out but it was cold. Standard bar food little seasoning. Cool little college bar.

Yelp
Sunday brunch buffet is where it's at. We came one weekend, but they were closed for the "snow storm" (it barely snowed). We tried again the subsequent weekend, and they were open! We paid $21 including tip for 2 people. They have a good selection of foods - standouts include the fried chicken, biscuits and gravy, cobbler, and omelet. They have a very large selection so come hungry! The people who work there are definitely in college and a bit unprofessional, but it's a buffet. Expectations need to be kept low.

Asenath N.

Yelp
Came here for happy hour. People seem to really like this place and recommended it to us. We ordered the chicken wings from the appetizer menu, chicken tenders and chicken quesadilla. When our food came it looked appetizing on the plate. The first chicken wing I had blood just started running down. I decided to cut a couple more open and none of them were fulling cooked. After we told the waiter, Someone from the kitchen came and apologized. If you like your chicken medium rare this is the place for you. Way overrated for the food and service.

Yelp
The Heidelberg is as Columbia as it comes and any True Son worth their salt would have one or two stories to share about their time here. It's a piece of Columbia and Mizzou history and worth the visit from that perspective alone. This is not fine dining and overall the food is not exactly stand out (although I will say I hear their German-style food is actually pretty good for those who enjoy that cuisine). They are mostly known for their great happy hour which includes BOGO apps and drink specials that call the college crowd out on a daily basis. It's just pretty traditional bar food. And its fine, you won't be mad with what you order, but just dont go in expecting a Michelin star experience. Sit at a booth and order a long island and enjoy the thought of more than 5 decades worth of students and columbia locals having that same experience. I will say, they have phenomenal long islands and it's well worth ordering one or two. Any more than that and I hope you have a sober ride home! The potato skins, spin dip, marty's wings, toasted raviolis, chicken quesadilla... Okay, now I'm craving those BOGO happy hour specials again. Everyone is friendly but service can sometimes be slow, especially when they are busy. Go and stay awhile--take time to enjoy the experience. Grab a rooftop patio seat if you can and dont forget to stop by the bathrooms where you can read more about this legendary establishment and the time, like many things in columbia, it burned down...

Yelp
We had a reservation and were seated as soon as we arrived. Our server was kind. I ordered the toasted ravioli and they were good. About halfway through the dinner the music was turned up very loud we could no longer converse. We asked the server to see about turning it down. They did turn it down. Overall it was ok, not super impressed though.

Yelp
STOP! If you need to be somewhere within 2 hours of eating, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! The place was not that busy. From the time we sat down and ordered, it was 55 minutes before we got our food! Grant it, my food was good and the other 3 people with me said theirs was good to fair. I don't know if they have 1 cook who is not familiar with cooking for restaurant style settings, but overall, the food should have been served a lot quicker than what it was. We were hoping to show our kids a good place to eat that is literally across the street from MU. After our experience, I doubt they will go back. It's kinda sad because back in the day I ate here often with college friends since it was so close to campus. Oh well things never stay the same. I hope, if MU is their choice, they will find a hang out they love and make great memories with new friends!

John W.

Yelp
I have been here twice since my daughter became a freshman at Mizzou. The cajun burger and buffalo wrap were both great. Service and food was perfect. This is my favorite place to eat when in Columbia. I highly recommend.
google avatar

Lester N.

Yelp
I should of took that gut feeling just from looking at the outside of the building. But I was in town with a Broadway show and decided to give it a shot. I got the fish and chips and the potato skin appetizer. First they gave you 3 very small pieces of fish and the batter/breading was almost soggy from grease. The fries were nothing to brag about either. And then the potato skins were mostly hard and crusty around the edges. I've had potato chips that wasn't as crispy as some of these potato skins. I wouldn't recommend and I wouldn't go back. I should of went with the first choice and got pizza from domino's. Least there I know what I'm in for
google avatar

Stephen T.

Yelp
This place is awesome I would recommend getting your drinks from Regan or Cassius. They make the best drinks ever. What I would do for these two people to serve me fresh cold stag everyday. The beer is cold, the food is good, and the memories will last a lifetime. The berg is a staple in the Columbia, Missouri bar scene.

Yelp
This joint has been the best go to for breakfast for eons. Actually the food here is outstanding all day and night. Great atmosphere in great campus locale. Excellent hangover food!

Priyankana B.

Yelp
Very good food and ambience! Loved the Fish & Chips and Quesadilla! Highly recommend!

Thenn M.

Yelp
Somewhat pricey for what it is--2 people with food and drinks will be around $65-70--but good food, nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Overall good place.

Yelp
Food and drinks were pretty solid but the service was meh. I would likely come back but the service needs to pick up
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered To-go; Veggie Cajun Burger, Sweet Potato Fries and a side of broccoli. Everything came separately packed. The veggie burger was delicious- very well seasoned. It didn't fall apart while eating it which is always nice. The sweet potato fries were bland and didn't appear to have any seasoning on them but they were at least fresh. The broccoli was as expected. My only recommendation is to season the sweet potato fries please.

Amy B.

Yelp
The food was awful, very obviously prepackage food that was simply reheated. The mashed potatoes were instant. I was so disappointed in what we were served for a bill of $60.
google avatar

George H.

Yelp
I was going to rate The Heidelberg lower. But it is what it is. I think they do a very good job of providing basic food and drink at a lower price point. The service could be better, specific examples are having to ask 3 times to have the table wiped down. And my colleague needed to ask repeatedly for a second beer. for ~$11 I was able to get out of there with a turkey club sandwich with sweet potato fries (the mild horseradish sauce that was brought with the fries was awesome on the sandwich) and a beer. It was solid.

Chad C.

Yelp
The positives: very good service and a great, old school bar feel. The spinach artichoke app was good, especially with the crispy wonton chips. The negative: bland, bland food. Ordered the Cajun burger, which consisted of a pre-made beef patty that had a few shakes of a bland Cajun seasoning. My wife's patty melt lacked flavor too (due in part to the dearth of caramelized onions). Her sweet potato fries were badly undercooked. Great place for a beer and appetizer perhaps, but I would save your money getting a meal.
google avatar

Kathryn R.

Yelp
Our waiter Cass was amazing! He was super friendly and extremely knowledgeable of the menu! He made our experience 5/5 stars! The food and drinks were also great, with an affordable happy hour. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Gemma S.

Yelp
Happy hour is a great deal! Buy one get one free appetizer. Too many people all the time but I like their crowding:)

Sydney A.

Yelp
Mashed potatoes are horrible!!!! NO FLAVOR!!! Tastes like cardboard. Very dry. Do not order. Booze is good tho.
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
Local Columbia MO favorite. Love the chicken wrap and fries. Great happy hour. Always happy with food and service.

Ma D.

Yelp
Classic Mizzou dining! Great food, great service, great atmosphere (especially on the roof!). I love coming for happy hour!

Ralph H.

Yelp
This Saturday I went for dinner with my two boys while visiting for a dads weekend. I ordered a the Cajun chicken sandwich and it was cooked to a level of dryness just above charcoal. After two bites I stoped eating and informed the waitress who apologized and asked if I would like anything else. I declined. When check came the chicken sandwich was still on the bill. I paid, tipped and simply left a note on the ticket that the sandwich should have been removed. Game days are always busy but you can do better!
google avatar

Mark L.

Yelp
I don't have anything bad to say about the berg. I have had some great memories here and the food is great. I can't tell you how many times I have been to this restaurant for Happy Hour. It's the best in Columbia in my opinion--- half off appetizers and you can get a double long island for about $5. Brace yourself. Favorite appetizers include Marty's wings and the chicken quesadilla....loaded potato skins....buffalo wrap..... .... I need to go back.
google avatar

Monica M.

Yelp
Really great happy hour and patio. Absolutely love their sweet potato fries and appetizers. Great place to grab a beer with friends and a pretty good brunch too. Love the location!
google avatar

Trevor M.

Yelp
The Heidelberg has a super affordable brunch! You definitely get what you pay for, but it hits the spot if you're looking for something to absorb all of the alcohol from the night before. For those that want to keep the party going (or start the day off right), they offer a selection of brunch cocktails. Loved the potatoes and the omelette station - the rest of the food was exactly what you would expect from a bunch buffet that costs less than $10.

Samantha T.

Yelp
I have been going to the heidelberg for 40 years. They do not disappoint. My food is beyond and their service is superior. I have NEVER had a bad experience. I will continue to patronize forever.
google avatar

Erica D.

Yelp
I would not recommend this place if you're looking for good food, the stuff my boyfriend and I got tasted like it came out of a frozen package. I really don't think anything we got was made there, definitely did not live up to our expectations. College kids who don't know what good food is is the only reason they're still in business in my opinion. Way over priced, and hyped up. Save your money
google avatar

Yelp
The old Berg burnt down a little over five years ago, so the building there now the the rebuilt version. From what I understand it is almost exactly like the old Berg but cleaner and with nicer bathrooms. they also added a roof deck in the new construction which is open when the weater permits. The Berg was my second home while I lived in Columbia. For me it was the epitome of the local bar, where everybody knows yor name. It was really a family atmosphere where you could do anything from get into a competative game of Silver Strike or darts, or just sit and BS with your buddies over a couple of beers. The staff are all friendly, with attractive young undergrads doing the serving and knowledgable bartenders slinging the booze. The crowd is a nice cross section of Columbia, some local business men but mostly students and professors from the University right across the street. They also have a couple of regulars that are there every day. So be sure to say hi to EJ at the end on the bar when you go in. The food is your standard pub fare with nothing too outstanding, though I do have to recommend Marty's wings, seasoned chicken wings with no sauce. They are pretty tasty. They also have an all you can eat Sunday brunch buffet which includes made to order omlettes which is a pretty good deal. An average selection of beers with your regular macro brews, but they do have a couple of good micro brews from Boulevard and New Belgium on tap. It has a full bar so the tenders are always ready to mix something for and maybe even join you in taking a shot. I have been gone almost a year now and really miss this place.

Yelp
Our Waitress' name was Kashmir. The entire time we were there she was basically running from us. She rushed us to take the order, and then the entire time she kept acting like we were bothering her. She then failed to tell us that there were specials going on. Very unprofessional, I didn't enjoy the food that much either. Mozzarella sticks were good but that's it. The artichoke dip was trash! I honestly love this place for their Long Island Iced teas but honestly I'd never go back.
google avatar

Yelp
We met my sister here for a family dinner while visiting her at college. It's definitely a college restaurant; tons of students around (including the servers). Service was extremely slow. We waited 10 minutes before even being asked what we wanted to drink. We were also not given any small plates for our appetizers - which are kind of hard to share among 5 people. The food was ok - the buffalo chicken dip and the pretzels were good. However, my French dip sandwich came out lukewarm with just meat and bread, even though the menu said it had melted Swiss and grilled onions. I politely asked the server about it and she said "Oh, that's gross. Do you want a new one?" Considering how long it took for our food to come out in the first place I said "no, just bring me some onions and cheese, I guess". Sadly that did nothing to make the sandwich taste better. My mom got fish and chips and she was equally unsatisfied - her coleslaw was inedible. When we were finally ready to pay, the waitress brought us our check and we had payment ready immediately. But she immediately ran off. We then saw her helping another table of about 15 college students. Took about 10 minutes just to pay the bill and get out of there. This place might be great for college students with low standards but we won't be back.

Yelp
We had a wonderful dinner here tonight. Met one our son's professors and his wife for dinner. My wife had a pulled pork sandwich and my son and I had the German sausage plate. We were all very pleased. Great beer and IPA selection. We are on the upstairs open air patio and enjoyed a beautiful balmy evening. Make sure you give this place a try when you are in Columbia. You will be glad you did.
google avatar

Jerry A.

Yelp
Great fast service with friendly employees at the bar. They like new business culture and always make me feel welcomed when entering the business facility. Most importantly nice casual people are always in the business. No belligerent people in the business so I would even bring my kid with me. Thanks for acting like civil citizens going into 2020
google avatar

Emily D.

Yelp
We went here for brunch as our last meal in Columbia before continuing on our trek across the country. They were serving a brunch buffet but it didn't really appeal to me so I went with something off the menu along with the rest of our party. The server was pretty average but out drink cups remained full and we were happy. I ordered the grilled tuna salad and it was awesome and healthy! Cha ching! Everyone else seemed happy with their meals and with the fact that they were eating at one of their old college stomping grounds.
google avatar

Yelp
I find myself drawn to the Berg like a moth to a flame. The buy-one-get one appetizers during happy hour and late night happy hour certainly help...however there is so much nostalgia here. I've been on first dates here, took my 21 shots there when I turned 21, went to my first grad school happy hour of many here, and find myself popping in for a beer before...er, i mean after...classes on many, many occasions. The service varies depending on who is working and how packed they are, but despite the occasional dud of a waitress, service is pretty solid. The upstairs patio is pretty lovely to bask in the summer heat and catch up with friends. Something about the Berg just makes me really happy.
google avatar

Eric W.

Yelp
Joined a group from work for dinner here. The young man waiting on us was absolutely horrible and has no business waiting tables. At one point I had to get up and go fill a water pitcher myself to bring back to the table to fill glasses. He was more concerned with going behind the bar and getting himself a bite of food. The food was just ok. Definitely will not be back.

Yelp
I have never been a fan of the Heidelberg. Poor drink specials, lackluster atmosphere, and awful, frozen food. To start, the drinks. One word, expensive. That's pretty much it. Next, the atmosphere. None of my friends have ever expressed a desire to meet up at "the 'Berg" without chuckling. Honestly, this place is not very fun. More than anything it's a place for you to take your parents, or drink at four in the afternoon. While large, it feels cramped. Don't know why, but when eating or drinking there I feel like the room is closing in on me. I'm sure all the wood grain this place has doesn't help. The best part about the 'Berg is the rooftop. A Columbia sunset can be really beautiful up there and sipping a beer while watching the clouds roll is relaxing. It's partially enclosed, so shade is an option, and if it starts raining you can still enjoy your beer. Now, the food. My goodness. If you're a fan of overpriced frozen food than this is your spot. Oh you're not?! Well then don't even bother. To sum it up: Burgers are frozen, chicken tenders are as well, sauces squirted from a bottle, bland tasting everything. If I were to suggest anything it would be the deluxe potato skins, those are not that bad. Here's the thing, the Heidelberg has been around forever. It burned down a while ago and was rebuilt. Legend has it, this place used to be really good. If so, I have yet to experience that. If the 'Berg were to fix anything, it's the food. This place is more a restaurant than a bar. Using fresh ingredients is the key to better food and bringing in more people. Not to be an ass, but I do watch a lot of Restaurant Impossible.

Yelp
The Heidelberg (or the Berg, as it's more commonly known to locals) is pretty great at what it is: a down-to-earth college town bar with decent food and good drinks. Their upper patio is fantastic for a summer evening drink. But the Berg isn't really worth it unless you're here during happy hour for the drink specials and the Buy One, Get One appetizers. The food is tasty, but nothing particularly extraordinary for the prices...unless you're doing the half price apps at happy hour. Now, all of the appetizers are winners, but the Marty's Seasoned Wings are the best, in my opinion (closely followed by either the bacon and cheddar skins or the deluxe club skins). Mmm! The servings are big enough to make a meal out of only appetizers, and if you go with a few friends you can order a table full of options. The service is the perpetual drawback at the Berg. Expect slowwww service and miscommunication, especially during busy hours. But don't let that put you off- the beer selection is good enough to keep you happy even if the wait staff is usually mediocre.
google avatar

Yelp
If you like crappy appetizers and poor service, this is the place for you. But if you are leaving campus and too lazy to walk a few more feet, to grab a drink, sit outside and it is somewhat tolerable.
