The 5 Best Things To Eat In Helen, Georgia During Oktoberfest

"German Potato Salad With its original owners hailing from Heidelberg, Germany, this three-story restaurant has been a Helen staple since the late ’70s. In addition to a stage for live performances inside, they’ve got one of the best patios in town, overlooking an always lively, central courtyard. When you want to lean into the Helen vibes with a true German meal, there’s enough schnitzel, spaetzle, and sausage options to make you feel like you should say danke to your server. But what makes this place a must is the kartoffelsalat—the best German potato salad in town. Tender chunks of potato, onion, and pork mix together for a delicious, tangy dish. And while we were hesitant about a warm potato salad (we could feel legions of Southern grannies scoff as we took our first bite), it mixes just right with a cold beer. This was a really cool place. The food was delicious and the service was great! The schnitzel was so good. My son enjoyed the stew and the mashed potatoes were fantastic! Our server was very pleasant and attentive! Definitely 5 stars! They did have a weird tax and charge for using your credit/debit card. Overall it was priced well for the meals!

The food wasn’t authentic, even though they tried. I lived in Germany for four years, and this was nothing like the real deal. The schnitzel was decent and pretty tender, but the chicken cordon bleu was a letdown. It had good breading, but barely any filling—hardly any cheese or ham at all. The salad was actually very yummy and fresh! The Balsamic dressing was delicious. The German potato salad was alright, but they used canned potatoes instead of fresh ones. The worst part was the pretzel; it was so super dry and cold, and didn’t have enough salt on it. Instead of a German vibe, they were blasting pop and rap music instead of some fun oom-pah tunes. With the prices they charge, I just can’t give more than three stars.giving more than three stars is something I can do.

I visited here for the first time recently. I was with a small group, none of whom had been before. We thought the wait to get in would be longer, considering the length of the line, but we were seated quickly. Our server, Mark, was so friendly and welcoming. We ordered appetizers - potato pancakes and a pretzel. Everyone else at the table enjoyed them, but I did not. The pretzel was a little too salty for me, and the pancakes were a little too greasy. The appetizers and side salads (which are very generously sized) came in a normal amount of time, but the wait time for our entrees was excessive. After waiting for a long time, we were told we'd have to wait for at least 15 more minutes. I did not enjoy my food at all. I ordered Hühnerbrust which was not flavorful at all to me. Others ordered a Schnitzel sandwich, a reuben, and different sausages. The Schnitzel was also not flavorful. One person ordered hot apple cider and gave it five stars. It was really delicious. Overall, this is not a restaurant for me and I won't be returning.

We were really disappointed. If you want German food don’t go here! Their Bratwurst is not a Bratwurst!! The Gulasch is not a German or Hungarian version. It’s just all throw together and plain. This soup was even served cold and the waiter didn’t care after telling her as well as telling her that they gave us the wrong sausage which turned out in their eyes is a „Bratwurst“. Bratwurst does not get served unfried or sweet flavored! The potato salad was plain and not German either. I don’t understand why people wait in line to go here! We were 4th in line when first opening up at 11am and they made us wait in the front of the door for 10Min since the people in the front of us entered. We were not seated until 11:20am. This service would definitely need to get better. Left disappointed.

My grandchildren love this restaurant. We eat here everytime we visit Helen, Georgia. Probably 3 to 4 times a year. If you want good German food, this is a great choice. Service is great with very friendly staff.

My husband and I had dinner here while we were in town. Our waitress, Taylor, was phenomenal! We ordered the world famous Cordon Bleu Pork Schnitzel with a side of spatzles and a side of German potato salad. We also ordered a side of the Mushroom Cream Sauce to put on top of the schnitzel. When I say this was phenomenal, I am not joking. It was delicious! It was so delicious that we went back two nights later to have it again. The first visit we sat inside and the interior could use some work. The second visit we set out on their patio, which is very small with only four tables, but it was a lovely evening so we wanted to sit outside. If you have the pleasure of having a meal there ask for Taylor!

Great place to visit for German food in Helen. It's downtown, and a really good choice when all the riverside restaurants are jam packed. They have several great German beers on tap and the food is very good. Service was a bit slow last time I visited, but it was pretty crowded.

Came last weekend during Oktoberfest for dinner. We sat outside on the balcony so we could hear the live music from the main tent, which was nice. They have the best potato pancakes from helen imo. Highly recommend the chicken cordon bleu schnitzel.
