Best Sandwiches in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Set in the heart of Lincoln Heights (and on the edge of Glassell Park), the Heights Deli & Bottle Shop is a local favorite for excellent sub sandwiches, natural wines by the bottle, and one of the best selections of canned beer in LA. Any sandwich off this menu is sure to be a hit, but the chicken Parm stands out from the pack with its crusty exterior and tender chicken cutlets. Served hot, the sandwich is filled with breaded chicken cutlets pounded thin and slathered with rich marinara sauce. Melted mozzarella cheese ties it all together, adding a pleasant saltiness to the acidic tomato sauce. It’s a classic chicken Parm in all the best ways, and doesn’t try to be anything that it’s not. And as a plus, the bread is just the right texture to avoid that mouth-slicing sensation that often comes with too-crusty loaves. On nice days, enjoy the sandwich on Lincoln Heights’ attached outdoor patio. — Rebecca Roland, editor, Eater Southern California/Southwest" - Mona Holmes

Best Dishes Eater LA Editors Ate This Week: April 14 | Eater LA

"A classic deli menu stacked with hulking pastrami sandwiches, meatball subs, pizza, salad, and wings; the chicken Parmesan in sandwich form impressed on a toasted sub roll. The chicken cutlets hit a good meat-to-bread ratio, the sauce is thick with enough acidity to stand up to melted mozzarella, and the roll has a thin crispy crust that yields to a plush interior. It’s described as a sandwich that “hits just right in every way,” and the price noted was $13.70." - Eater Staff

Had a most delicious sandwich at this establishment. At the recommendation of a friend that helped me move a piece of furniture today. It was called the Lincoln Park avenue. Another friend had the same sandwich and another had a Mission Road sandwich. Those were the names of the sandwiches. I had a soda and so did my friend and another friend had a margarita. Never mind you the margarita was $10 but it was very delicious. The three of us ate lunch for $62.22 cents. Since my friends helped me move that one piece of furniture I paid for lunch. Although we picked up the piece of furniture in North Hollywood and delivered it to Fontana. But again the sandwiches were delicious. They have hundreds of wines and beers and sodas from present and past as well as Pizza. Highly recommend this place.

The lady taking my order was friendly. She was patient while I waited for my family to decide on which cookie they wanted via text. The order came out quickly. Great food for our Hollywood Bowl meal.

Google
This was a great find while in the area. We had the jambalaya pasta, salad and garlic knots. The garlic knots were soft and delicious, I'd definitely go back just for those. Portions sizes were big, it felt like we ordered at a restaurant. The jambalaya pasta was good, although a little greasy. Service was fine. We ordered and waited about 10/15 minutes for it to be ready. There is outdoor seating, with music playing. There was parking in the back.

I am new to the area and I’m a complete foodie, so I was really nervous about trying this place because a lot of places I’ve tried in Los Angeles have not been what they promote or what I expected when I stayed. This place is absolutely delicious. I got the Heights sandwich and the jambalaya pasta oh my God the sandwich was amazing super fresh ingredients. The bread was perfect so flavorful so tasty you could tell that is freshly baked. The pasta was absolutely delicious flavorful robust cheesy and the perfect ratio from Cheese 2 garlic to sauce & spices chefs kiss and I’m a for sure foodie like I said I go to mini restaurants and this is actually the first review I’ve ever done on Google. I’m gonna head over to help to amazing amazing amazing definitely Gem 💎 And let me not forget to mention the services is amazing. They have a large variety of beers, IPAs pilsners etc to choose from and the host/ cashier who helped us out was super informative and helpful so happy that I decided to go and try this place today. Best decision I’ve made in long time. Absolutely delicious

Google
The best sandwich shop for miles. The menu is divided between hot and cold sandwiches, pastas, salads and appetizers. I always like to ask for a suggestion because it’s all good. We’re talking big portions, incredible bites and if you’re a fan of truffles, get the truffle fries. Inside you’ll see a vast variety of beers, wine, hard kombucha and non-alcoholic beverages. They carry the more crafty and unique brands here. I love their ‘clean up after yourself’ culture. If you enjoy a meal in their outdoor space, they provide cleaning products to encourage doing your part. Nice amount of parking behind the space.

Google
This deli shop was close to our hotel and decided to check them out. They have a great selection of wines and beers at the shop and you order at the cashier. I believe there were some tables and seats outside but we only ordered take out. Street parking only but we didn’t have trouble finding a spot close by on a Saturday afternoon. Everything was made fresh and we really enjoyed everything we ordered! -Garlic Shrimp Pasta ($14.60) -Garlic Knots ($3.95) -Broadway Sandwich ($13.50) -Philly Cheesestake ($13.70) For the sandwiches, there’s an option to add house hot pepper sauce and it was sooo good and spicy! I saw that they sold it in bottles and I wish I bought some for home. The food took a little bit to come out but again everything was made fresh and we ordered a good amount of food. The lady who rung us up also kept checking up on our order to make sure we got ours on time. Loved the customer service here. I wish we lived closer to this deli because I would be a regular customer here!

Google
The pizza was good but I had better, but at least they are trying ... The service was very friendly and professional, the atmosphere was really relaxing! Great selection of alcoholic beverages. Will definitely go back. Thank you.

lovely one

Google
I ordered their food via DoorDash. Pasta is a good sized and seasoned to perfection. Enough meat too! However their pasta is super oily! So much oil I can moisturize my body with it. It’s overwhelming oily! Skip the pasta and it eat their sandwiches! Which are delicious and filled with meat! Get their pepper sauce on the side!

Yelp
Amazing deli sandwiches, local favorite. They use Boars Head deli meat and a combination of super fresh ingredients for each sandwich; generous portions. The Ave 26 is my favorite but everything we've tried there is really great! You can order online for pick up or walk in. Inside the store they have a fun wine and beer selection. They sell beer by the can with a lot of locally brewed and craft beer. It's a little pricy per item but great if you want to try different cans. Parking is in a tiny lot behind the store, there is usually parking on the street as well.

Yelp
My husband and I ordered takeout from this spot. I ordered the arugula and prosciutto salad and "Sichel St" sandwich. It's small but very organized and holds a lot of merchandise for the amount of space there is. It's a really cute convenience store. The people there are equally nice. The person taking our order was really kind and patient when my husband was searching through the cider section. I actually really enjoyed the salad. It was a good balance of savory from the prosciutto and tangy from the balsamic vinaigrette. I finished it all and it was a huge portion. The sandwich I was slightly disappointed by. I didn't really like the micro greens and the mozzarella didn't taste fresh. It was slightly stiff and bland. I ate maybe 1/4 of the sandwich.

Yelp
Local favorite, always packed and ordered my "regular" Heights deli sandwich toasted. Sandwich consists of Salami, mortadella & provolone . Toasted gives just the right crunch and warmth for the ideal sandwich! Washed down with an Arnold Palmer, the sandwich is both delish & more than filling. Downside is the wait. Downside: 18m is a bit long if tight on time, but totally worth it! Parking lot is almost always full and street parking is metered.

Yelp
The Heights Deli is a popular eatery located in the vibrant city Lincoln Hts of Los Angeles, CA. This deli offers a diverse menu of food (salads, sandwiches, pizza, pasta) and wine/beer options. I made a quick stop to checkout this deli and I was perfunctorily greeted by a young female staff. I bought a $4 dolla fresh lemonade juice. It's refreshing and low in sugar. Street parking available. Overall, I had a good service experience and enjoyed their drink. I will try their food next time.

Yelp
This deli-style sandwich shop offers a menu that seems tailored to the neighborhood, though the prices are on the higher side. The setup is fairly typical, with a variety of sandwiches and what appears to be pizza, judging by the stacked boxes near the entrance. Ordering can be a bit chaotic--you have to walk to the back, and with no clear line system, I almost got skipped. The dining area seems to be through what looks like a back door, adding to the confusion. Beverage options aren't well-marked, though there's an impressive selection of craft beers and wines scattered throughout. You'll need to search a bit, which I did while waiting for my meal. This was my first visit in three years.

Yelp
Pretty yummy sandwich somebody picked one up for me, and it had been at least an hour if not more before, I got it . So I'm giving it before five stars just on the strength of me having gotten a sandwich, but I didn't choose quite a while after it was made, and it was still really yummy. From looking at the menu, I figured out that they got me the Broadway it was yummy. I'm definitely gonna try this spot and taste a few other sandwiches

Yelp
Wanted to start off by saying the ambiance of this place is really nice--chill type of vibe with outdoor seating, heated lamps, and nice music. They have an entire area of alcohol to choose from that you enjoy at their seating area. Service: the guy working the register is really friendly. He makes sure to acknowledge any questions you have. Food: I've been here twice so far. Their pasta is amazing!! Please try the carbonara or the pesto pasta. You won't regret it. Their main st sandwich is as pretty good too but their pasta was something I kept reaching for instead. During my second visit, I decided to try the forager pizza with sausage and chicken added plus an order of mozzarella sticks. To be honest, the smell of the pizza was better than the actual taste of the pizza. The entire thing tasted bland and felt like it was missing something. I don't know if they use the same chicken in their pizza as the pasta or if I just don't notice how dry the chicken is in the pasta but the chicken I added on the pizza was super dry and bland. Honestly, skip this pizza ($35.50). The mozzarella sticks were decent but not something to rave about. Parking: plenty of parking in the back lot so no need to worry! Overall, come here for the pasta and surplus of alcohol choices. Try the sandwiches but skip on the forager pizza.

Yelp
Was in the area and in the mood for a good deli sandwich and found this gem on Yelp. Came on a Friday around 4pm. Easy metered parking right out front and not too busy. They have an extensive menu with lots of options & a wide selection of beer/wine. There's also a cozy patio if you decide to eat there. We ordered the Main Street and the Heights deli sandwiches. Both were great! Although I do wish the bread was a little more fresh- tasted a bit stale but the deli meat and ingredients were generous and super fresh! Portion is also a good size- saved the other half for later! Def want to be back to try their hot sandwiches & pizza!
google avatar

Yelp
You may think they're doing too much, but have yet to have something that wasn't excellent. My favorite spot. Tend to get the sausage or a meatball sub but have tried pretty much everything and it's awesome.

Yelp
What a great find! Just wanted a simple sandwich to take to a brewery: and found this place in the area! It's a no fuss kind of place where the focus is on quality food with quality ingredients. In a location that looks like just a liquor store you will find this hidden gem that sells wine bottle, beers from all over and a lengthy menu. A menu that consist of pizza, pasta, sandwiches and more! We grabbed a quick meatball sandwich and it was filled with tender meatballs, sauce and yummy cheese! It was a perfect compliment to my cider! As the food was so good, I look forward to stopping for other quick bites. You can also eat at the deli: they have a small outdoor patio that is shaded. Plus the deli has a free small parking lot in the back! Hey, you know this place is good if two fire trucks are pulled up for some food!

Yelp
The pasta is so good! I ordered the carbonara and it was delicious. My sons really like the cheese pizza. The food was ready in 20 minutes. The man who took our order was attentive and polite. The prices are not bad for what you get. The bread on the prosciutto sandwich was soft but crispy on the outside. I ordered two pizzas, carbonara, and a prosciutto sandwich for about $80.

Yelp
For an outstanding sandwich, pizza or pasta, check out the Heights! Enjoyed a Main Street sandwich with chicken and a hot Philly cheesesteak. Sub rolls are superb and the sandwiches are generous. Also especially enjoyed the broad selection of craft beers by the can to choose from and helpful service to make some good selections. Some nice choices in draft too to pair with your sandwich. Unique and popular spot in the Heights! Enjoyed the outdoor covered seating ambiance.
google avatar

Yelp
One of my favorite deli shops in the area! They have a nice selection of wine, with a easy digestible descriptions of each wine which was perfect for me since I've only started getting into wine. They offer a selection of sandwiches, salads and pastas as well with a cute little outdoor patio in the back. I got the Heights sandwich with the Mango Lassi Beer. The sandwich is sooo good, packed with meets and with lots of their delicious sauce. The Mango Lassi Sour Ale was so delicious, I think about it all the time! It was super fruity and you can really taste the mangoes!
google avatar

Yelp
Great place to enjoy a cold beer and a cold sandwich. They have a patio to enjoy your food and drink. They also have pizza! Everything was great including the ambiance outside. You can buy deli meat to go as well. Or grab a sandwich to go.
google avatar

Airi G.

Yelp
This was a pretty mid sandwich to me although the cross section looks great and really promising. It was hyped up on all the Yelp reviews I read but I thought it was mediocre at best. I tried the Heights which is one of their most popular items but it tasted like a regular sandwich. More house sauce would've been nice but I think what would've saved was spice. Spicy sauce can be purchased on the side but I think it should come as a part of the sandwich because it needed a kick or some acid to balance out the monotonous taste. I drove out of my way to get this because I was really craving one but don't think I'll be going back. The workers were nice though. I don't know if it was just a one off but maybe the other sandwiches are better.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent service on a busy night and food quality was A+. Ambiance was great sitting outside. I'll be back soon!

Yelp
Amazing sandwiches. My favorite. As a sandwich girlie this has my heart. I LOVE. I honestly go alone and will eat 2 sometimes. Not ashamed.

Yelp
Fantastic pizzas, huge sandwiches, great pastas, and an amazing wine & beer selection! Small outdoor patio for You to eat here. If you order online, they do a great job of packing everything up for you.

Yelp
I love their food. I only can afford it once a month. ‍ Everything is fresh. I ordered the meatball sub.
google avatar

Yelp
The Heights Sandwich! Get it. It tastes delicious, it's satisfying and you want more. Parking is easy, behind the shop. I had a quick break from hospital work and needed a pick me up. Thank you!
google avatar

Liliana C.

Yelp
There's a crazy variety of pasta and delis here, I had a hard time making up my mind!! Prices are so fairly priced and generous portions too. I got their Chicken Parmesan pasta, it came with heavenly garlic bread which I LOVED. I probably liked it more than the pasta itself though, the chicken was tough and dry, and lacked flavor overall but you get what you pay for. You order at the counter and then you pick your food up at the little table to the right of the counter once they call your number. They also have tables outdoors. I would definitely come back to try out their delis next!
google avatar

Michelle F.

Yelp
I will be back! This was my first visit and I will be back for my wings! The chicken wings are a must. One of the top wings that I have ever eaten. I ordered the Heights Sandwich and my BF ordered the Griffen Ave, both yummy. Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Ellie R.

Yelp
Big menu with lots of variation! Most the pizzas are around $28 and can feed 4-5 easily, and they do half and half without extra charge. The crust is absolutely the best part, perfectly chewy and made in house. The Chilango was pretty good, was reminiscent of a taco pizza but could've used more seasoning. Service for the pizza took a minute since it's made to order, but the sandwich came out almost immediately. Great outside patio area with lots of seating if you plan to stay.
google avatar

Viviana A.

Yelp
This is the best sandwich spot! My husband and I drive about 40 minutes to get their sandwiches and wings! (The heights sandwich & the Daly street sandwich-no artichoke, add Cajun turkey) Definitely worth the drive! Service is always amazing and quick as well :) Parking can get a little tight but has never been a major issue.
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
Good NY style pizza.. Nice thin crust. The sauce could use a bit more flavor, but all in all a solid place to get a pizza.
google avatar

Naomi S.

Yelp
This place used to be a very famous chicken spot in lincoln heights and it is now a very new york like deli. The sandwiches are great. It's not the best sandwich you'll have but it's definitely filling. They have other options like pastas and pizzas. The pastas are very heavy but taste really good. Sometimes I have noticed that the food is very oily, and mozzarella sticks are soggy. The food is filling and solid. The ambience of the place is very laid back they have a wide selection of IPA beers. It is very easy to order.
google avatar

Nick A.

Yelp
Driving past this decided to turn around and grab a sandwhich More "wine" space, new deli style than "old" school (think Bay Cities or Mario's) I ordered the Height's and truffle fries (asked to hold the truffle but was still charged the same price) Sandwhich was a 3 on a good day, bland no flavor the meats were thrown on the sandwich in a way in which they likely have all the ingredients pre stacked and they place on the sandwhich No flavor, dry (even though there was mayo) no peppers or anything else Asked for extra sauce and was told "we charge for that" (really do you have to nickel and dime to that level ?) The space was ok , the service "industrial" and the food passable I didn't want to rate this place as mid but it is, the saving grace is the wine and beers they have
google avatar

Sergio D.

Yelp
Great good and employees here. The food is delicious and always hits the spot when I'm craving a real sandwich. Check them out. Tony Dee 4/20/24

Yelp
You can call in the order or order online. Some parking in rear or lucky to score a steer spot out front. I've been coming to this place for years now and it's only been better. love their pasta dishes and the garlic knots here. My fave sandwiches are the Ave 26 or Griffin Ave. it's small inside with lots of options on bottle shop. The cookies at the cash wrap are delicious. Cookies and cream or red velvet. Thank me later.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Heights is our go to Sandwich spot since moving to LA. The meat to bread to veggie proportions are perfect. There are also other items on the menu like pasta's and salads. Love heights!
google avatar

Jay S.

Yelp
The Heights cannot miss. They just can't. This review is for the Eggplant Parmesan sandwich, but I've had the Sichel, Lincoln Park, Johnson St, Pasadena Ave, Broadway, Chicken Parm, Penne Al Funghi, and The Heights. All flame, 10/10. The Eggplant Parm sandwich took me on a magic carpet ride to my Italian grandmother's house (and I'm not Italian lol). It made me feel so homey and warm/fuzzy inside... Slightly mad at myself for not ordering this one sooner. Who knew 3 ingredients could create such an experience. Although The Heights might be on the pricier side for sandwiches, I will always be proud to support this amazing establishment. Staff is super friendly and hard working, the food's great, and their are sooo many drink options. They definitely have something for everyone.
google avatar

Bonnie Y.

Yelp
been passing by this place many times and finally decided to come one day- glad that i did! sandwiches were great - i think the prices are reasonable as they are pretty sizable sub! it lasted me two meals! we also got the garlic knots - oh wow they may be the largest knots i've seen... you'd be satisfied and be prepared to have garlicky breath the rest of the day... truffle fries were alright - wish they do offer just regular fries. a lot of wine/beer to choose from - i do with they offer more options on fresh draft beer though... they also have some good flavors of 'house made' iced tea... but it's $4/ea and it tasted just alright... will definitely be back to maybe get some fresh deli meat, and also try their pizza/pasta!
google avatar

Yelp
This deli totally gives Brooklyn deli vibes which is a huge compliment. The sandwiches are super fresh and they came with hoagie bread that was slightly crisp on the outside and soft in the center. The sandwiches are named after/inspired by different streets in LA. I tried 2 sandwiches; the Main Street (chipotle chicken, provolone, avocado, cilantro, lettuce tomato pickles onions, mayo, mustard & house sauce) as well as the Pasadena Ave (sliced chicken, turkey, cheddar, lettuce tomato pickle onions mayo mustard & house sauce). Both sandwiches were delicious. The sliced deli meat tasted very fresh and so did the veggies. Loved their pickles. Good ratio of protein to cheese to bread and toppings. They also sell a variety of different specialty drinks which I'll have to try next time I come in. They do have some outdoor seating available arranged in an outdoor patio area. Food came out quick and the cashiers and servers were friendly. Will definitely be back soon.

Yelp
One of the best sandwiches in LA! I always order the Johnston St and omg I have never been disappointed. Service is pretty fast! They do get very busy though. The ambiance is chill! Can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Yelp
Still the best sub sandwich in LA. I have this sandwich about once a week now. Service is always quick and the sandwich is always so good. Hate that I have to scarf it down in the car but, it's so worth it.

Yelp
Just went this afternoon with my cousin and wow-wee can I tell you it won't be my last! My cousin is a frequent flyer here but for me it was the first time. We had ordered an Ave 26 (left) and a Sichel St. (right) and they were huuuuge sandwiches. The two sandwiches, two drinks from the fridge, and two bags of chips came out to a little over $40. Trust me when I say that it is totally worth it if you feel it's a little steep of a price, and you are really getting your money's worth here (no tiny bags of chips either y'all hahaha)! Memo was the person who helped us in the front. He was so kind with walking me through the menu and things I was in between. Went the extra mile in subtle ways that I appreciated a ton. There was a nice outside area to eat with plenty of napkins, hand sanitizer, even cheese/red pepper for your pizza and pasta needs. Overall I'm super excited to try even more next time I'm in.
google avatar

Dan N.

Yelp
Went there Sun 12-1-24 @3pm ordered two sandwiches. I didn't call my order ahead but didn't need to cuz the staff was on point, very fast and the young lady at counter was super friendly and professional! However the price didn't match the quantity of the sandwich. I will still be a customer regardless.
google avatar

Yelp
The lobster ravioli was insanely delicious. The portions are big, the sauce is incredible, and the prices cannot be beat. Mushroom pizza + beer + lobster ravioli = $28 it also came with a bread knot that was super warm and yummy. The whole establishment is so fun. Lots of craft beers, unique brands, and tons of wine bottles to choose from. Staff is kind and there's a free parking lot behind it!

Yelp
Food is delicious as always. Lobster ravioli is the best hands down. The carbonara with chicken cutlet

Yelp
Always delicious, always timely, and always friendly. Really can't go wrong here. I've ordered from this place countless times and the subs are always on point. The Heights, Mission, and Griffin are the main ones I get. The cobb salad is always generous and great. Drink selection is vast and plentiful. I'm very particular about subs and this is one of few places I return to for them.

Yelp
We had this catered to a work event and it was so amazing! I had the jambalaya pasta and can't stop talking about it! Definitely plan on making a trip to try the menu in another day!

Yelp
This place is 5/5 stars all around, every category. They are always patient and accommodating with my allergies, and the food is always delicious. Haven't had a negative experience here yet. I've really only get pasta from here. The pasta itself, the flavorful sauces, and the food inside the dish are always cooked to perfection. The sauces are always so good and flavorful. And the prices are even crazier. 100/10 recommend.

Yelp
I've been to this place quite a bit this year, and it's quickly become my go-to sandwich spot. What I love most about it is the speed of service; you can pop in and out with your food in just about 5-10 minutes, making it perfect for a quick meal. Plus they do a great job with their sandwich portions. A perfect ratio of meat, cheese, vegetables, and condiments. The variety they offer is impressive; I think there's definitely something for everyone. I've tried a good bit of their menu, and I highly recommend almost all of them. If you can't decide, there are plenty of options to customize your sandwich to your liking too. Just a heads up, though, the Sichel St Sandwich tends to be a bit on the salty side, so keep that in mind. Some of my personal favorites include The Heights, Brooklyn, Pasadena, Griffin, Pastrami/Roast Beef sandwiches. In addition to their outstanding sandwiches, they also serve some pretty good NY-style pizza and fries. If you're in the East LA area and you're craving a fantastic sandwich, definitely give this place a try!

The Food here is amazing I've got the pizza, sandwiches, pasta and this place never fails. The service there is amazing the lady is always kind. I love the small place outside very relaxing and when it's cold they have heathers outside.

Yelp
Such a good place in Lincoln heights!!! Takeout only with only 2 spots in the lot for parking, so sometimes you gotta wait a bit or find street parking. But they have amazing (thin crust) pizza and jambalaya! They also sell single can craft beer and wine, so you can grab a variety to try if you're into that. Service is always sweet when they ring us up. Our favorite has always been the jambalaya, Chilango pizza, and forager! We've tried the sandwiches, but I'm not as big of a fan (maybe personal preference). Pastas come with 1 garlic knot, which is absolutely superb

Yelp
Ave 26 for all of your deli sandwich needs. Sometimes you just need a great deli sandwich and man was this a great sandwich. They are not shy on the meat, which is one of the best parts, you really feel like you're getting substance - not just bread and veggies. I'm also a giant fan of the addition of honey mustard. More places should do this, honey mustard is better than regular mustard always and I will die on this hill. My husband ordered The Heights which is a Tony Soprano dream sandwich, all that gabagool makes this one a winner as well! Great local spot, keep up the good work!
