Turncoat Loosens Up Chevy Chase With Bathtub Gin and Bootlegger Mugshots | Eater DC

"Opened in December, the attached Heights food hall injected lunch and dinner options into the historically sleepy upper Northwest neighborhood by anchoring eight stalls alongside a front bar and creating a new hub for dining; I noted hours of 11 a.m.–11 p.m. Sunday–Thursday and 11 a.m.–midnight Friday–Saturday, and Common Plate is planning to add a year‑round patio to expand seating." - Aparna Krishnamoorthy

My spouse has eaten here several times and has enjoyed it so we came while I was here for a visit. The place is truly a local bar with tvs everywhere to enjoy your local team or whatever it is you enjoy. My spouse had the French onion soup, and I had the burger with a side salad. I did ask for recommendations and was told to choose the burger. My spouse enjoyed the French onion soup very much. The burger was fantastic. The meat was juicy and had lots of flavor. I enjoyed the extra flavor from the caramelized onions but not so happy with the bacon. The bacon was supposed to be a bourbon flavor. I did not get bourbon and wished that it wasn't so mushy. It would have added an extra layer of flavor with a bit of crunch. The side salad was just that. Nothing out of the ordinary. I would come back for the burger, though.

My brothers and I were there for suncruisers and a couple apps. The bartender was down at the other end of the bar talking to her friends the whole time (no problem) and only tended to us when we called over for another drink (again no problem) When the bill came my brother paid and the bartender yelled at him for under tipping. When he offered to fix it and tip her more she walked back down to the other side of the bar and complained to her friends rather than letting my brother leave more. As we walked outside the bar tender had one of her friend follow us outside and ask what we were doing and why it was so cold.

Google
The staff was very friendly here but the overall experience was lacking. Our food order got messed up and they forgot stuff along with the fact that we repeatedly got flat beers. Overall the food was good but not amazing - although the chili was really nice. The restaurant space itself is nice, very pub like and the atmosphere is super chill. I’ll be back again sometime soon I’m sure and hopefully they’ll have smoothed some things out.

I stopped by the Heights Pub while passing through town. I really enjoyed this welcoming, small, cozy neighborhood tavern. The menu is enormous, the service is excellent, the beer was cold, and the food was very good. I had the baked haddock sandwich - it was super fresh and delicious with a ton of haddock. Great value. Next time I'm definitely going to try to Gloucester Reuben! I loved the ambiance of the muted country/pop music in the background - most bars these days have 2 volumes, 0 and 10. I highly recommend if you are in the area and looking for a relaxing lunch.

From start to finish my experience at the heights pub was not good and I would not recommend eating here. When we first walked in we waited to be seated but noticed that there was an odd smell, almost like rotting garbage/fish. While waiting I also couldn't help but notice that there was a sign that said the food safety inspection could be seen upon request. My fiance noticed the smell and recommended we go somewhere else, but I insisted it was probably fine. Unfortunately it was not. Our waitress quickly took our order and never checked back in. This is probably because it was clear we did not like the food. I ordered a Caesar salad and my fiance ordered a quesadilla with guacamole. As some of you may know Cesar salad dressing is creamy. When my salad came it was clear they used some kind of vinaigrette and upon tasting it I'm 95% sure it's Ken's light dressing from the bottle...On top of this my fiance was served brown guacamole that cost extra. Which really made me start to wonder what their health inspection score was. I think this speaks for itself what they are willing to serve to their customers. After leaving I walked to D Agostino for a sandwich. TLDR: Smelled like garbage inside, service was not good, the Cesar salad had Ken's light dressing on it and the guac was brown.

Google
Friendly staff and good food. We came for lunch and both ordered a Cobb salad. Food was pretty yummy and came quickly. There's a decent outdoor seating area with plenty of space. Will definitely return!

Google
Solid menu with some creative burgers. Good selection of beers Packed on a Friday night with a diverse array of locals young and older. Happy that this place exists and isn't a big corporate owned chain

Google
do not go here. bar tender was extremely rude. made some really rude remarks and then walked away. I tried to ask them about it and they used other customers who are regulars to try and threaten me. do not go here.

Yelp
The pub was popping Friday night! Came here with my bf for some drinks and bites Friday night and the place was packed! We quickly got seated and ordered some beers. They have a few on tap and more bottled beers. We weren't that hungry and wanted some small appetizers to share. We ordered the chicken wings which came with a couple of sauces and some tater tots. The wings were yummy and the sauces were good. The tater tots came with a side of their specialty house sauce which was nice and tangy. We also ordered a couple of soups. They had clam chowder and french onion. We couldn't decide between both so we ordered one of each to share. The clam chowder was nice and creamy and the French onion was very tasty. We enjoyed our beers and ordered another round. We had a good time hanging out and watching the game on TV.

Yelp
Good location, intimate setting, TV's to watch sports, decent beer selection, and unless it's Friday or Saturday evening, you can usually sit at the bar. This is where the good parts end. The food barely registers as edible, and to be honest, has gone downhill since they opened. I recently had a grilled cheese which was barely cooked on one side on stale white bread (at least they gave me two of them, lmao), with a side of uncooked carrots and a few sliced peppers coated in some kind of oil, cold, inedible, bland, tasteless. Fries were limp and cold. Whomever is doing the cooking needs to be replaced. As far as staff goes, they never seem to have enough. The bar is usually very slow with only one bartender and no barback to speak of, so it takes time even when half full to get a drink. Prices are meh certainly compared to what you get. Food used to be a bit better a couple years back when they opened, but nope, not now. The crowd is very Arl/Lex as to be expected, so maybe they either don't expect much, or they don't care. Come on folks, do better, please.

John P.

Yelp
Served me literal raw chicken, chicken tartare if you will. Comped my meal, but the manager who was present didn't bother to come over to apologize. Waitress was super sweet about it though. However, I still consumed raw chicken.

Yelp
This place has good pub food, a pretty wide menu. I love the garlic steak sandwich- it's almost impossible for me to resist the temptation and try other things on the menu. The burgers are large and tasty with many choices. The beer selction is excellent. Service is friendly and efficient. This is definitely a place I go to often.

Danilsh M.

Yelp
A cute little pub, the employee were very nice and seemed like they enjoyed their job! You Got to order the Garlic Steak Sandwich, tender juicy meat very well seasoned. Drinks were decently priced to definitely will be back!

Yelp
The food and service was awful! The waitress Erin was disrespectful in different ways, she doesn't accept any constructive comments and she swear on me and my friends with F-words whiling we trying to explain her attitude was wrong. The food was over cooked such a the steak tips and baked seafood plater was made incorrectly. The steak tips wasn't cook medium rare, rubbery and the casserole was only fry fish. I felt like I was eating left over since the food and drink prices were so expensive. Cheap quality food, terrible service and high prices. Be aware!! I can't believe the waitress screamed on me all the time and been rude because I said: "it wasn't what I expected for food" and she started a big scene. I recommend if you go there, just be aware that Erin is a evil and horrible person. The environment was hostile because this waitress created a big scandalous in front of other customers without being professional. Beside, it was not manager to address this situation on Saturday night, unbelievable!!

Robert C.

Yelp
A clean welcoming space greets you with contemporary music at a nice volume. The staff is friendly, efficient and don't make you wait. I recommend the avocado burger, grilled perfectly medium. Juicy with Just the right amount of toppings. I got fries as a side an couldn't finish them. The tap was broken on the beer I ordered, but the alternative selection was great. I will be coming back.

Melanie F.

Yelp
Food was great fresh and service was amazing! I went between 3-4pm which was a great time! 6:30pm is where it's getting busy!

Yelp
I wanted to like this place. I was excited to have a new local spot not too far away, but unfortunately it was a disappointment. We tried take out from here a couple of nights ago and we had issues. The ordering process over the phone was a bit painful and took 6 minutes. Then we picked up the food and brought it home and the buffalo wings that were supposed to be spicey had no sauce at all, just dry wings. The turkey burger was undercooked and on a soggy and cheap mush supermarket bun, which was said to be brioche. It certainly was not. Lastly, the fries were okay...nothing great. I called the restaurant to let them know of the multiple issues, unfortunately it wasn't worth it to go back for a replacement as we were already home and it was late. The person took down my number saying a manager would call us. I was hoping to give them a chance to make it right and at least knock off a little money before writing a review. They did not call. The reason I still am giving 3 stars is the Greek salad we got with grilled chicken was pretty good. Otherwise I don't think we will be back for food, other than maybe to have a beer in the restaurant.

Yelp
Food was absolutely delicious - I shared the sweet potato fries (AMAZING, best ones I've had in my life) and onion rings w/ my 2 friends and they were both incredible, solid 11/10. The veggie quesadilla was also reallyyyyy good lol! Portions are BIG though (you will definitely have seconds). However the service was REALLY slow. I felt like it was understaffed and getting the check took longer than the actual food waiting process or eating the food.... or both haha it just took so long to get the check and felt like the waitress wasn't really that attentive... just fyi if you are in a rush to go somewhere. Went on a Sat night and it was pretty busy too - I waited like 15 mins outside which wasn't terrible though.

Laurie G.

Yelp
Advertisements on their draft beer glasses. You can do better. Seriously. Food is average - some fresh, but most out of a freezer.

J. Vincent L.

Yelp
Food is OK. Service good. But BEWARE: the price gouging on the draft beers is even worse: $14 for a 7% IPA?!?!? Other places serve it for $7 or even less at happy hour. Should at least list the prices of the draft beers.

Yelp
I really want to like this place, but they make it hard. Stopped in today for lunch at 12:30 and was immediately hit with an overwhelming smell of cleaning product. Not in a good "I'm clean!" way. More like the "I'm secretly dirty!" smell. The smell was a bit off putting. We sat at the bar and I headed to the men's room real quick (more on that later). The food: They have an amazing deep fryer - their tator tots are incredible. Like really good. The rest of the food not so much. My teriyaki chicken wrap had no flavor at all. Hot, wet chicken with a mild soy-sauce like flavor. My Bloody Mary was equally bland. The tots however were incredible. Now for that bathroom experience. I've honestly seen dive bars out in SF that have been cleaner. This place was gross. And this was 12:30pm on a Sunday. The exterior door was black with filth, as was the inside. The tiled wall had clearly never been cleaned - downright disgusting. And the smell - combination of dirty and cleaning product at the same time. Even when sitting at the bar, everything looked worn and dirty - although it could be the exceptionally bright white lighting. I want to like this place but sadly this was our last time giving this place a try.

Yelp
I really want to like this place. Second time here and it was clearly not well managed. We sat down and it was full but the bar was not. Our drinks took a while to arrive at the table and they ran out of coke. They said they had to go to the store to buy bottles. When we ordered food it arrived cold, my fries were raw and my friends were well done. My "double grilled cheese" was packaged white American cheese that was not even melted and looked like a children's grilled cheese and the bread was burnt. We ordered a second round of drinks that never made the table. After 15 minutes, I was frustrated and asked for the check which had my grilled cheese and everything else we didn't get on it. The server was very apologetic. You think a manager would have came over and apologized. Never again!

Yelp
Wow! It's a shame I live two towns away, this place makes you feel at home, the food, the music but most of all it's the staff from servers, barbacks, especially the bartenders (Alyssa) !!!! Back to the food, I had the French onion soup, omg tops and then I ordered the house combo... check out their menu and make the journey! Outside seating, weather permits.

Yelp
Good pub food. Small and very crowded on a Thursday night, so pretty loud. Even so, we will go back.

Kate S.

Yelp
We've had two really good meals here now: gold rush wings were fantastic, a tater tot special was delicious, a seafood trio dish with two sides was a great value and very tasty. One time service was prompt; the second time was a Friday night and it was a bit busier and service was a little more scattered. Still, a great experience and really good food!

Ian C P.

Yelp
Solid pub food, and a favorite with my kids. My kids enjoyed the avacado burger and the mac n' cheese; we liked the cajun burger and the bourbon burger. The clam chowder was average. A good local place to go if you're looking for pub-type food.

Rose M.

Yelp
Outstanding!!!! First time there last night and I'm definitely going back. The service at the table and bar was terrific. Staff very accommodating, friendly and efficient. I got fish tacos made with haddock and they exceeded my expectations!! The best I've had so far. Portions are great too!!

Steven F.

Yelp
This place was jamming on an early Friday evening and continued to be busy the whole time we were there. Locals really seem to love this place and I wanted to as well. No such luck. The service was very friendly and efficient, though we waited some time for our nachos. Once they arrived our salads came a few minutes later, immediately followed by our entrees. The food was the real issue though. Everything lacked flavor and the salad was wilted. The House steak tips were a disappointment completely lacking any flavor and tenderness. The baked fish arrived with a mushy bread crumb/butter mixture sliding off the fish. I'm glad that they are doing a brisk business and that the neighborhood is supporting them despite the mediocre food.

Geri L.

Yelp
If you are vegetarian or vegan, stay far away from here-- only thing supposedly edible on the menu was a black bean burger that was most definitely totally inedible-- I was starving, but one bite and it went right in the compost bin-- absolutely gross. Also horrible atmosphere-- two large screen tvs blaring sports and news, impossible to have a conversation-- so sad that Balich's ended up this way :(

Yelp
It is nice to have a local pub. The staff is friendly and my husband likes the buffalo wings and he is pretty picky. It is traditional bar food with no fluff. Good for kids except for the fact it is pretty small inside and crowded. Not ideal for vegetarians that know good veggie options. They do have salads (I have only tried the garden and it was ok) and I recently tried the black bean burger. The black bean burger was terrible - SO dry. The sweet potato fries were okay and the kids like the quesadilla. Next time I will try another salad and my family and I will go back. The food is just 3/5.

Yelp
This place was poorly staffed and totally unaware and unapologetic about it. There were maybe two servers in the whole place and not a manager in sight. It took us over an hour to get dinner, which we took to go bc it was getting so late... and then when we got home, the order was wrong. Total waste of time and money.

Big L.

Yelp
We've been to the Heights Pub several times. The food is consistently good pub food. Very nice, comfortable atmosphere. Usually the right amount of crowded. Service very good. Will be going back.

Robert C.

Yelp
Went to the Heights for a second chance last week, since the first time was disappointing (food/service).  We sat at the bar this time, but were again disappointed. I ordered a turkey burger with cheese.  The burger was tasteless, and came without cheese.  Since it was busy, I couldn't get the bartender's attention until the burger was mostly gone.  At this time, I mentioned that the cheese was missing, and that it should be removed from the bill.  Instead, she brought a cold slice of cheese on a plate to me, and still charged me for it. And apparently, they only have one squeeze bottle of mustard for the entire restaurant.  To address the tasteless turkey and limp fries, we were using it throughout the meal- until the bartender grabbed it for another table.  We never saw it again. Between the poor service and mediocre food, definitely not recommended.

Paul D.

Yelp
Was happy to see a new choice for food as it is seriously lacking in this area. Got the French Onion soup and a burger. The soup was lousy. Nowhere near what it should taste like. The burger was ok but not better than Jimmy's Steer House down the road and more expensive. I might try it again but wouldn't choose the soup or the burger.
google avatar

Yelp
Great Bartenders and good food- nice pint and beer selection extensive. Glad to have a place in the Heights
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
Great neighborhood pub, just opened last month. Typical bar food, but it's done well. the Mac and Cheese with Buffalo tenders was rich, flavorful and a great mix of flavors. The steak tips are especially good and the broccoli vegetable was done perfectly. Also the cole slaw seemed to be home-made. Serve was great even though the pub was crowded and the staff was friendly. Its so great to finally have a neighborhood pub. Full bar, excellent and large beer and wine selection.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
I have been to The Heights Pub several times for dinner, always a friendly welcome, the staff was prompt to seat us with menus and a drink order. I've tried several items on the menu and everything was delicious! So happy they were finally able to open up.

Lanie C.

Yelp
We've been wanting to try this place and hoping for a great go-to for local takeout. The reviews were mixed but we figured it couldn't be that bad so we gave it a try tonight. What a mistake. My husband had the Gloucester Reuben which was mediocre, soggy, and they forgot the cheese. My haddock sandwich was supposed to have tartar sauce on it and didn't, there was 1 wilted leaf of Romaine lettuce on it, the bun was OOZING with butter, and the onion rings were rubbery and inedible. As a result, my entire meal except for the haddock itself went into the trash. $16 dollars into the trash. It ranks as one of the worst restaurant meals I've had in many years. Do yourself a favor and find another place for dinner.

Chris F.

Yelp
I've been waiting for this restaurant to open since they first announced they were taking over the old Balich 5&10 storefront and finally made it last weekend. I had a Buffalo chicken wrap with a side salad and a couple of beers. I ended up in urgent care the next day with food poisoning that, based on the onset of symptoms, was attributed to what I ate here.
google avatar

Tara S.

Yelp
I've been here a few times since it opened and the hit or miss reviews are consistent with our experience. This past winter we had a great meal (salads, fish tacos, apps) at the bar and the restaurant was packed. Then today (summer) we had a horrible meal. Our food was really not enjoyable - rubbery / inedible onion rings, fish tacos with no flavor, a wrap that was soggy and fell apart, side salad with wilted lettuce. The waitstaff didn't even ask or notice that we didn't each much of our meal because it was so gross. In fact we were one of the only tables in the restaurant and the service was slow / inattentive (the staff was hanging out in the back of the restaurant chit chatting). Given this experience I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. We really want this place to be successful since we need a restaurant like this in the neighborhood but given our experience today something needs to change.

Alan G.

Yelp
Great neighborhood pub and perfect addition to Arlington Heights. Good service, quality food, and good beer list.

Frank G.

Yelp
Great beer selection on tap (maybe 20, from Bud light and PBR, to Lord Hobo and Night Shift Santilli). Too bad they blare sports at you from the six flat screen TVs. And I do mean loud, you have to shout to be heard. Not the place to go have a conversation over a few beers.

Christopher O.

Yelp
Sat outside. Service was kind and prompt. Had some kids items and some wraps. All the food came out quickly, was hot and fresh, everything tasted delicious. Great addition to the neighborhood.

Brian O.

Yelp
Stopped by for dinner and some drinks. Great service and the food was awesome. Have been to the First House and look forward to frequenting the Heights Pub!!

Doreen K.

Yelp
This was the first time I have been here. Despite what some friends told me I felt I needed to try for myself. So disappointing. It took us several times to get one of the bartenders to take our order. They were not serving others. I order turkey tips with no extra sauce after cooked. They came out smothered in sauce. They took them back, rinsed them and microwaved them. Came out with a very hot plate and cold food on top. Awful my friend ordered clam chowder (cold) and a double grilled cheese sandwich. Cheese wasn't even melted and very thinly sliced.

J H.

Yelp
I was their Saturday night with other people. We had Jen A as our waitress and she was great, possibly the best waitress there. The food and drinks were delicious. Two of us went tonight and sat at the bar and the food was again delicious. The soups are great and the Tuna Casserole was perfect. It's nice to have a local place to go to that serves good food in a nice atmosphere.
