"Owner Paul Shanrock’s upcoming Fremont bar, Stampede Cocktail Club, has set an opening date of May 1, right in line with the estimate he gave in March when he first announced he was taking over the former home of the Helm (N 36th St.)." - Adam H. Callaghan

"Nautically inspired Fremont bar The Helm has closed its doors, which means no more inventive cocktails, well-designed Northwest bites, or large patio on N 36th St. for people-watching. A tipster shared the unfortunate news, confirmed by a source familiar with the business — the bar’s website said it would be “closed for private events for the remainder of 2017,” but apparently it never reopened. The Helm’s executive chef, Travis Stewart, spent time at Canlis, and head bartender Kyle Takacs had experience at Bottle and Bull and Lot No. 3. In December 2016, a few months in, The Seattle Times’ Tan Vinh said the cheap bar snacks — plump, buttery seared scallops, ribbons of cured salmon on crostini — were the real draw, outshining the uneven drinks, but the drinks did eventually even out. At the time of publication, The Helm had not responded to requests for comment. There’s no word yet on what might be next for the key players or for the space." - Adam H. Callaghan

The Helm opened about a week and a half ago. They gave an impressive face lift to what used to be a second-rate Thai place, and I'm hopeful about what it will become. It's super new, so it was understandably empty on a Wednesday night. Generous happy hour, limited but intriguing food menu, cocktails were all in the $11-$13 range at normal pricing. Decent draft list at generally $6-8 per pint. Wine list was very standard. One cocktail was very boldly flavored, the other was on the sweet side. Staff was friendly, drinks took a while to make but I'd chalk that up to the whole thing being super new. Great attention to detail with the internal renovation (saw lots of outlets with built in USB ports by tables inside), and the shady front porch will be excellent in the summer. Definitely worth a first visit, and I absolutely plan on coming back.

The cocktails were tasty & unique! The vinegar popcorn was delicious. The layout of the restaurant can make it a little tough for seating. Service was ok. I would go back for their Lovely Rita!

We came in for a light dinner and were really disappointed. I'm fine with going with a small plate menu, but when 4 mini crab sliders cost $22, they had better be great... and these tasted like it was regular crab dip on regular bread. The risotto was also way undercooked. It ended up being $75 with tip for 4 mini appetizers (no drinks). I would have expected to pay maybe $30 for that quality. The service was good and the atmosphere was really cool, but the food was below average if you're going for a tapas style menu. Wouldn't recommend for food.

Lovely bar with beautiful designed interior and delicious cocktails! The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere was great. I will definitely be returning to try their beers and to check out the patio in warmer weather!

We've had a few hits and a few misses here. The sunchoke soup is wonderful and the bees over the high seas was marvelous. Flops included tiny and unflavorful crab rolls, some unimpressive wine, and the 15 minutes that passed after we had finished our meal where we couldn't find an employee in the restaurant.

Small, curated selection of small plates and great cocktail selection. The place is small, but bright and relaxing (without even including the patio). The staff are engaged and happy to suggest!

I haven't had the food here yet, but have been here twice for drinks and haven't been disappointed. It was a bit hot inside and the smell was pretty bad. They must have had a fridge not working because damn...But can't really fault a fish place for hot days and no a/c. The drinks are bomb, I will be back for food.

Do you want an amazing well rye manhatten, then head to the Helm. They have a nice selection of local craft ales. The rotating draft is on happy hour. We tried the happy hour cod that are lightly breaded, served on purple potato chips, with fresh dill, & lemon drizzled flat leaf parsely. Homemade remoulade came on the side. If you want a risotto with some bite, then go for the farro risotto with diced parsnip, turnip, and rutabaga. Just don't forget to ask for a spoon so you don't miss one grain of farro.
