LA’s Bar and Nightlife Scene Has Little Hope of Recovery Anytime Soon | Eater LA

"An intimate music venue that has been instrumental in launching notable artists, including early-stage careers, but faces existential risk because its core offering—crowded, standing-room live shows—cannot be replicated under prolonged gathering restrictions; ownership doubts the venue can realistically reopen post-pandemic." - Farley Elliott

Hi-Hat is one of those unassuming neighborhood spots that totally over-delivers. We stopped in for cocktails and pizza, and it was the perfect combo of cozy vibes, great drinks, and seriously solid food. The espresso martinis were smooth, well-balanced, and strong—just how I like them. Definitely one of the better ones I’ve had in STL. And the pizza? So good! The crust had a perfect crisp, the cheese pull was chef’s kiss, and the toppings were fresh and flavorful. We got a sausage and pepperoni pie and demolished it in record time. Hi-Hat strikes that rare balance of being chill and unfussy, while still delivering on quality and taste. Great for groups, casual nights out, or anytime you’re craving comfort food and cocktails done right. Really wonderful neighborhood bar that’s opened up recently. Started with the espresso martini as my beverage choice. They make fresh espresso for each cocktail, and the bartender said it was their top selling drink. I can see why; it was delicious. We then split the Buffalo chicken Mac and cheese and the pizza. The Mac was top notch; they use a homemade Buffalo sauce that takes it to the next level. The pizza is extremely similar in texture and taste to Mellow Muhsroom, with buttery, fluffy crust that still retains a crisp undercarriage. It isn’t my personal favorite style, but my girlfriend really enjoyed it, and it was definitely fresh. Great place to do dinner!

📣 Soulard Recommendation 📣 We stopped in at “The Hi-Hat” today. We loved this gem….the space, cocktails, and food checked the boxes! Facts below 👇 - The bar on the 2nd floor was originally from downtown Union Station (they rent for weddings, birthdays, corporate events 😉) - they offer Tito’s on draft mixed with fruit purée, lavender and ginger (highly recommend!) - the food menu is top-notch! (Taste their made from scratch jalepeno bacon Mac n’Cheese and fries with homemade aioli dip) - the building was from the late 1800’s …so much architecture to appreciate (ask Patrick the owner and bartender a STL native who moved here from New York two years ago for a tour!) - the 500 lb. chandelier was hand assembled by the owner

Great food! Great service! Great drinks! One of my favorite places to have late night food. Definitely go here for an expresso martini.

We celebrated a 30th b-day at the Hi-Hat with a group of about 35 guests, it was fantastic! Easy to coordinate, guests loved the food, and the staff were on top of everything. A great group of people and we can't wait to get back. Thank you Patrick and the Hi-Hat staff.

Google
I'd come back for the atmosphere and live music. Also the staff and bar goers were very pleasant and easy to talk to. Did not like the pizza, it had no tomato sauce and the bottom was burnt.

Google
We hosted a birthday party on the second floor and couldn’t have found a cooler spot! Patrick, the owner, was incredible from start to finish. He made sure everything we requested was taken care of — from the food and champagne to thoughtful NA beverage options for our sober guests. Every detail was perfect. The vibe was exactly what we were hoping for: a perfect blend of historic charm and funky character that looked absolutely stunning when dressed up. Highly recommend!

Google
We had an excellent experience at Hi Hat! Our bartender/waitress Lauren was AMAZING from the customer service, drinks, and laughs. I highly recommend Hi Hat! Oh and espresso martinis and old fashioned- OMG Fantastic!

Yelp
Not what I expected, but now one of my new Soulard faves! You'd think it's a dive bar from the outside, but it's the coziest, swankiest little lounge that feels like someone's house. They had a jazz jam band to perfect the ambiance. It would get pretty loud, though, when they were playing so it was a little hard to talk. I truly thought this bar only served espresso martinis because that's all I saw people ordering and drinking, but now I understand why. They're GOOD! A cute, intimate spot for starting or ending a night.

Yelp
We were in the mood for a Sunday Funday and this popped up for happy hour. We had been to the building but not since it was Hi-Hat. I regret to inform you that even though they had happy hour online on Sundays, they did not actually have happy hour. Which was a huge bummer because it was the only reason we chose this spot. BUT they had some really tasty on tap cocktails, including a berry/ginger vodka drink that we've been copying at home because it was so good. The service was great it just sucked that they had different information online than in person!

Yelp
Grabbed a midafternoon drink here while in Soulard. I got an espresso martini and my husband got an old fashioned. While ordering, he asked the bartender if it was sweet, and she said she could make it less sweet for him. It was a beautiful afternoon, so we sat at the few tables outside. Our drinks were delish - would definitely recommend for a stop!

Yelp
Came in for espresso martinis and had a great time! We sat at the bar and were warmly greeted by the bartender. It was Sunday, so lots of football on! A great spot to watch a game at. Apparently their food is amazing, so definitely wanting to give that a try next time I'm here. The first thing you'll notice are the lights strung on the ceiling. I love touches like this, details like that make spots memorable. The drink itself was delicious and probably one of the better espresso martinis I've had! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Great drinks, cool vibe there, on the smaller side, has live music sometimes! Would definitely come back

Yelp
The FOOD is fire (small bar menu but so good & made with love) the service... IMPECCABLE.. Evan is our bartender and is probably one of the sweetest most down to earth people I've ever met & made our martinis fire!! The ambiance of this place is such a vibe. Relaxing, calming, great for a date night, probably turns a little more dance party ish after a certain time but this place is the place to be. New favorite bar in Soulard. I used to be a Dukes girl, I am now a Hi Hat girli

Yelp
You know who should get credit? Restaurants that are open on Mondays!!! "Will dance for pizza!" The Hi-Hat was the office for the afternoon! Hi-Hat's pizza is Sicilian pizza! She thick! She hearty! Our guy told us the pizza chef here started out of his house during Covid! Loving the progression into a restaurant! Great for lunch, happy hour and dinner! Located in Soulard!

Yelp
We've been here for drinks and dinner a few times. The bar, itself, is so cool- dark, historic interior, awesome bartenders, a 2nd floor that hosts bands on Fri/Sat. There is jazz on Wednesdays. The craft cocktails are very affordable, very strong, and very good. A couple of those babies and you're tipsy. I'm a huge fan of the Pineapple Ryesing and the Soulard 75. They also have Hi Hat Cocktail draft, which I believe changes from time to time. It was a strawberry lemonade, which was fabulous. We've had the Hi Hat burger which was outfreakingstanding. That thing was huge, cooked to order, and well worth the $14. A fries are deeeeelicious. We've had the margherita pizza as well, which was soooo good. The staff are super friendly and lovely to chat with. Plenty of room to park your golf cart out front. Highly recommend this place. It's a terrific addition to the Soulard bar/restaurant scene.

Yelp
Mmm-mmm good! Had the pleasure of eating here for a quick bite and boy was it worth it! Good news if you're a fan of Sicilian pizza! The pizza was bursting with flavor, while still having crispy edges and a soft inside. I haven't had too many Sicilian slices in St. Louis, but it is by far the best I've had! The Caesar salad was unlike any I've ever had, as it was a curry Caesar dressing! I know you're thinking curry based? Really? Don't worry, I thought the same but was surprised at how flavorful the dressing was. I thought it was a nice twist in the usual dressing that those salads have. It was rather refreshing and was a good amount, especially for not being that hungry. Oh, and the croutons are nice as well! I can't wait to come and try the rest of the food, esp. the meatballs!

Yelp
Went here on a Monday randomly and OMG what a gem of a place. It's beautiful and cozy inside - felt like I was hanging out at a friends place. The bartender is so nice and sweet - the food is awesome. One of the best burgers I've had in St. Louis - the pizza is good too. Definitely a place I'd recommend.

Yelp
Been wanting to try out the Sicilian style at the Hi Hat in Soulard, since I've become a bit of a connoisseur in the thicker/focaccia/Detroit style pizzas over the last few years. Overall it was okay. We ordered the large 14" pepperoni & sausage w/ the garlic ricotta - and the portions were very huge, felt more like an 18" XL pizza. Service and wings were also great. The Good: the San Marzano tomato sauce stood out more than anything and had a great bold/acidic flavor. The crumb structure of the crust looked airy and well developed. Quality toppings like cup & char pepperoni. The basil added a nice touch. Improvement Opportunities: the pizza was served (I assume) in the pan it was baked in, so by the time it arrived the condensation from the steam made the edges/bottom of the pizza a bit soggy. The pizza was thick as expected, but a bit too thick and bready for me, with no outer crisp or crunch. The toppings & sauce were quite scarce, so most bites tasted like all bread, with some bites here and there catching some sauce or a topping. Felt more like eating a heavy focaccia bread with some added flavor to it. I heard this crust was also a sourdough, but I didn't catch any tang or earthiness to it. It tasted (and afterwards felt like) a standard commercial yeast dough, which is blander and heavier on the gut. Overall a decent pizza with good ingredients, but lots of room for improvement. Sauce - 9 Cheese - 7 Crust/Texture - 6 Toppings - 8 Overall Flavor - 7 Ratio Balance - 6 ... Total - 7.17 (3.59 stars - so with the good service & wings I gave it 4 stars)

Yelp
What a fantastic new addition to Soulard! This historic building which was the former home of Johnny's and then Harpo's has had new life pumped into it through what looks like a plethora of hard work. Very friendly staff and a fun atmosphere. Patrick and Kate were especially engaging. I will be a frequent customer for sure!

Courtney K.

Yelp
I planned my work holiday party here and everything from the food to the service to the ambience were quality. The pizza is incredible, wings perfected my brined, Mac and cheese excellent. Nice moody interior in restored old beautiful building with fire place, fun decor. Will be back!

Yelp
I really liked the Hi-Hat. We sat at the bar and was greeted right away. I had heard about their good pizza so I wanted to check it out. They bar was really nice, clean, good lighting. The bartender/server Kit was informative, friendly and a little silly. She listened to what we wanted and helped us place our order. I have never ordered this type of pizza, I would say it's more a Detroit style. It was so good!! Kit told us the dollops of ricotta elevate the pizza, good recommendation. Would go back in a heartbeat. My only bit of criticism would be once the band started playing it was too loud to hear each other speaking.

Yelp
Friendly bartenders, delicious cocktails, sexy interior, front patio and a small selection of bar food. The bar has more of a neighborhood feel than a tourist feel. The bartenders aren't dressed up, but don't let that fool you. They know how to make great drinks and they have an espresso machine behind the bar. If you want an espresso martini without all of the sweet liqueur, this is your place!Recommend!

Yelp
What a great place! A beautifully restored building with a great bar and staff. Full bar with some great specialty cocktails. Happy hour food specials were excellent. Kit - the bartender - was hilarious and a wonderful person. We had so much fun - and they have live music most every night!

Yelp
Decided to try this place as part of my journey to try new things and so glad I did! The drinks and the food were really good, affordable, and the service was great.

Yelp
Amazing pizza!! I'm from Brooklyn NY and have lived in St Louis for over 20 years and never could find a good Sicilian style pizza. Tell I had this pizza it's the best in ST. Louis hands down!

Yelp
This is a brand new place in Soulard that keeps growing and getting better and better. There's an upright piano downstairs and upstairs chandelier live music ambiance. The owners and everyone who works there are friendly and cool, full of life. Food is fantastic especially the chicken wings, pizza and burger. Great cocktail menu. Apparently you can even order a mini burger for your dog. Excited to see what's next!

Alysha D.

Yelp
BEST PIZZA IN STL hands down!! The cruuusstttt!! The margherita pizza is my personal fav! The vibes are on point, the food is good, and the drinks are strong. Everyone's friendly and welcoming. This place is a must visit that you'll keep coming back to!

Yelp
Food was great and so was the service! The place is clean and the ambiance is relaxing. Highly recommend!

Lisa M.

Yelp
First time eating here off the new menu. Along with the mouthwatering pizza, with a deep lightly browned crust, fresh toppings and a true Sicilian sauce, the fresh salads with house made dressing are a must have. They also have great appetizers and burgers. The staff are here to ensure a great atmosphere and experience. Fresh juices in the cocktails are an added plus! Excellent espresso martinis. Live music nightly, a good addition to Soulard!

Yelp
Still 'under construction' yet welcomed w open arms to view. (Down stairs bar open, whole place by 4/28). This place belongs in Soulard, (New York, Chicago, SF, and other great cities). Patrick, good guy for questions re history of the place.... Ask about the upstairs bar.

Amber M.

Yelp
Bartender Eric was just delightful! Smile on his face, happy to be there, food was 10/10! Will definitely be back!

Yelp
We had pizza here via "take out," and it was ready when we came to pick it up. That is a plus, but overall, we can't rate this very highly. We have been comparing pizza from various places over the last few months, and this is the first time we have concluded that we will not go back. The pizza was okay, but our one topping was sparse. We ordered the sausage pizza; there was very little sausage on it. Also the menu is very limited: 7 choices of pizza, 2 sizes of pizza. From our perspective, there are lots of other pizza places in St. Louis that we would rate more positively.
