GF options…have to ask when ordering at the counter…breakfast was full of flavor, did not disappoint! Small outdoor patio and indoor seating. We got the salmon scramble (ask for a change of bread if GF) and the hamlette. We’ll definitely be going back!

The chilaquiles in this place never have disappointed me, EVER. The dranks are great and stronkkk. Love that this institution is still standing strong after all of these years, truly commend the owners for pushing through and delivering great meals in an ever changing Highland park.

I got the James brown latte and it was so good. And I don’t usually love sweeter coffees. Very cool aesthetic inside

Great service, delicious food and amazing coffee. We only had to wait for about 5 minutes for our food and coffee which was really impressive. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. They were also more than happy to make me a iced chai with lavender. We had a fantastic experience and it was a great way to kick off our vacation.

A brew of Americano $5 Not a good coffee If you plan to work while you drink the coffee, make sure you bring your own internet. Theirs is terrible WiFi. I don’t understand why business do not share 5G. What’s the reason to restrict internet speed? They won’t pay more to share what they already are paying for.

Very disappointing place. The regular coffee tasted a little bitter and you don't get free refills only half off. The lattes are overpriced and very small and not the greatest. They took like 35 minutes to bring the order and there was no one else waiting to be served at the time. The burritos are OK, and so the pancakes. The service is average, besides taking so long to serve, the guy who took our order was really nice. Needless to say that I won't be coming back!

If you feel like paying gourmet food prices at subpar quality, this is the place for you. This place has the potential for a place that could be great- but falls short on its promise. You place the order first and then sit down to wait, bistro style. Plenty of places to sit, location is convenient and service isn’t bad. The prices are on the high side for breakfast- think $16-$20. It took 30 mins for us to receive our food, despite the fact it wasn’t a busy time of day. The coffee (which has a burnt flavor to it) is cold by the time your breakfast comes- and wait for it- you don’t get free refills. Breakfast itself wasn’t bad, the pancakes are thick and the bacon is tasty. But thanks to the overall experience and overboard prices, I won’t be coming back.

This cafe is super cute!! I honestly loved the decor and the variety of seating that is available for their customers. You can definitely come here to study or spend time working on homework. My partner and I came here to grab some coffee before heading to the bagel spot next door. Although it was a quick grab n go, I really admire the cafe's aesthetic. The staff was very friendly and quick with their service was well. We didn't wait that long for our coffees. Also, my matcha was super good! I got it with sugar free vanilla for that extra flavor and sometimes I worry about matcha lattes being watered down, but it was perfect! My partner although was a bit disappointed with his cold brew. He was hoping it would be strong, but I guess it wasn't strong enough for him :( he's honestly just so used to drinking so much coffee...

This happened over a year ago but I feel compelled to write this. I'll add that I've been a Highland Park resident for almost 20 years(yes before the hipsterfication). After bringing a group of colleagues here on multiple occasions...also eating here multiple times. On one occasion I brought a bagel from Belles down the street in here and the owner kicked me out. Made me eat outside in the cold while 6 of my co-workers who had bought food there ate. I gotta say, the food here is super mediocre. Bland, flavorless, with no love. I've never eaten here and been like "damn that was delicious" it's just been a place I go in a pinch. There's many other places in highland park that are waaaaay more quality. Pretty much any place on York or treat yourself to Belles or La Abeja in Cypress Park on Figueroa. Unless grubbing on bland flavorless hipster breakfast food while listening to a playlist of 90s alt rock is your thing. The employees are cool so nothing against them...But this place is as lame as its rude ass owner. Will never bring colleagues here again and I don't recommend this spot to anyone...

The Highland Café has been a staple in the area for quite some time. Even though it is next door to Johnny's Bar, which I frequented often, I have never been inside or tried the food. They serve salads, sandwiches, burgers, and vegan fare. The other day I ordered the Sesame Salmon Salad for delivery. The Salmon was pan seared with a sesame ginger glaze. It was on a bed of mixed greens with edamame, cherry tomatoes, shredded carrots, & sesame seeds tossed in a sesame dressing. The ginger glaze gave the salmon a good flavor and it was tender & flaky. The salad was also tasty. I liked the flavor combinations and the dressing.

Has the best coffee. Try the James brown. First time here try the chilaquiles. Everything I've ever had has been absolutely tasty & worth the $. Great service, love the vibe. This is an HLP gem.

Ordered a breakfast burrito cuz I wanted the cinnamon rolls on the menu. Order arrived with a stale chocolate croissant and a stale chocolate chip cookie. and the burrito was so disgusting, I gave up after two bites. the only texture other than mushy interior was the gummy tortilla. It's all going in the trash.

Perfect place for chilaquiles. Literally top tier ones too. Great service, and their barista, Jess even did latte art that was unexpected and kinda made my day. Very chill for a Saturday morning meeting, or going out to brunch with a friend group.

One of the few cafe in HP along York blvd. The Highland cafe has a hipster vibe that serve decent breakfast food. The staff are amiable and competent. The food and drink prices seem economically fair for the area. Menu list items were modest. The interior is quaint and relatively small albeit very cozy. Honestly, their latte coffee has a good taste and the Challah French Toast with slices of strawberry/banana was a lil dry for my palate but the maple syrup did the trick. Overall, I had a good order experience and enjoyed their food/drinks.

Excellent Americano and service. Ambiance had a nice warmth too. Definitely will be back.

Met a good friend here as my first stop back to LA. It has a really cool vibe. Cozy, quaint and very comfortable to hang out. The owner is really nice. However, the gentleman working the register may need some customer service training. Enjoyed one of their special coffees and a chocolate croissant. The coffee was ok. Small is the running theme as the cups and pastries seem to be part of shrink nation! Cool place for a meet up due to atmosphere. Will have to try the food next time as that might change my rating.

First time here and ordered the Golden Chai Latte, and truly perfect. The vibe is cozy and fun. Staff is great and made the perfect recommendation. Will be back!

This place is always poppin! I've gone a handful of times and staff has been super friendly. The thing I get every time is the Cali burrito with rojo fries. Omggggggggggg, so good. You must. Coffee is great too! I need to try more things lol but I always just want that burrito!

It's been a while since I've been here. Food is still great. Cozy little area for catching up with family or friends. Service was good, friendly and helpful. Definitely a place that is a need to come back to.

Great menu in fabulous service. The staff was so friendly and called me by my name. When my order was ready. !! great customer service close a really long way, especially in this day and age. Really great vibe in the café. Since my order is to go, I don't have photos of the food but I will post them on an update. Thanks Highland café for such great customer service. Parking is on the street where ever you can find it but it only took me 5 minutes to find a place to park for .25 cents

I live nearby, so I typically order online then make the 10min walk down to pick up my food. After making my order, I was given a time estimate - so I started my walk so that I would arrive when the food was ready. When I got there, the order wasn't ready. No biggie... but it took another 10 minutes before my order (a single sandwich) was ready. I got my order, thanked the staff, left a tip, and walked back home only to find that I was given chilaquiles instead of the sandwich I ordered. I wasn't about to walk back to the restaurant, so I just had the chilaquiles for lunch. Mistakes happen the meal was fine. A few days later, I thought I'd try again. Again, I ordered the sandwich I tried to get the previous visit and timed my walk to arrive when the order was supposed to be ready. The gentleman who helped me when I arrived looked at the screen, found my order, and said "it's not ready yet. We'll call you when it is. Have a seat." So again, I waited - sitting by myself on the bench next to the register. This time for 20 minutes - giving the occasional "hi, I'm still here" glance to both people working up front several times during that wait. After 20 minutes, I asked about my order. This time it was the other person who looked at the screen. They went to the first person who helped me, who was then sitting at a table in the back of the restaurant, who then came up to look at the screen again. He then said to me, "the kitchen doesn't have your order yet, would you like a refund or would you like to wait?" I took the refund, and don't see a reason to go back.

Foods are great and look good. Prices are reasonable too. Good vibes around here. Love the beautiful artwork on the walls.

I started the afternoon by walking down the busy few blocks of Highland Park looking for a food joint. We passed ramen, Thai, soft serve (never for lunch) a couple a coffee joints and then bam! I saw Highland Cafe from across the street, walked in, the music was poppin', the vibe was very cool and the crowd looked fine. Except for a group of teens. I digress. It just felt comfy. Local, chill, homey. The menu has a little sumptin for Everyone. I wolfed down the Asian salad, like nobody's business. My buddy had the fish tacos and raved about them. They were pretty good! "Better than pretty good and a nice hearty potion!" Yeah. A direct quote. They have some fun, yummy and quirky ales in the fridge. They also had wines and mimosas. Nice. While eating, and the food came rather quickly, we put in an order for fries. You can tell a lot about a place by their fries. And? DELISH ‼ Again, the order was large, so guess what was on the dinner menu in my house?! The staff was very cool, super friendly and fast. I'd go back in a heartbeat. One doesn't always need linen and china to enjoy a dining experience. Oftentimes really good food from good people can make your day.

After living in the neighborhood for over a decade, ashamed to say I haven't eaten here at all. Because my go to breakfast burrito mobile joint wasn't around the other day, I was told to go to HC. I ordered the breakfast burrito. it was out super fast. Staff was so nice, from the person taking the order to the waiter serving people outside. And the burrito was great, so glad I finally made it!

Man fuck this place ! Always supported it until today ! Milk was rotten addressed issue only to get yelled at even after continuously asking the asshole not to treat me the way that he was , he continued too !!! Left food on the table and left !!!!!!

This place has a very laid back atmosphere. My husband got a burger and fries, my friend got huevos rancheros, and I got chilaquiles. The presentation for my plate looked beautiful. I was so excited to eat it but the taste didn't impress me. I would rate my red chilaquiles a 5/10. It tasted like tomato with a kick of spice. I love good chilaquiles , but unfortunately, this place isn't it for this traditional Mexican dish. I had to ask my husband to help me finish it since it was $15. The coffee was meh, nothing special.

Order and pay at the register and find yourself a seat. They have quite a few tables outside and more inside. A single bathroom as well for the customers. Definitely the best coffee I've bought over my weekend trip to socal. They use excellent beans. They had a variety of alternative milk selections to choose from as well. Great spot for breakfast, lunch menu looks great as well!

This place has many versions of chai lattes, coffees, and sandwiches if I remember correctly. We got the chicken sandwich and a lavender chai latte. I got the Spicy Chicken and it was actually well toasted, well seasoned with the chipotle/mayo and balanced with the arugula. For a sandwich, I'll give it a 7/10; they didn't skimp out on the chicken either. Lavender chai latte was also really floral and refreshing, but it just wasn't my jam.. 6/10 cause lavender is still a good flavor.

People are nice! Environment is pleasant and hipster cool. Food is L.A. mediocre.

The food is AMAZING. We usually get the chilaquiles and an iced vanilla latte. Great combo, very filling. Highly recommend. It does get busy during the weekends, so best time to go is early morning.

Really good place in highland park to grab breakfast/ brunch. The cafe drinks are really tasty, I would recommend the iced chai or lavender late! I have been here a few times and staff is always friendly. The breakfast burritos are a solid portion that will leave you full and also have the best range of flavors imo. Their traditional american breakfast plates are also a solid choice if thats what you're in the mood for! Overall a reliable community breakfast/ brunch spot.

Delicious! From the breakfast burritos to the chiliquilles, everything here is soo good. A large enough menu that there is something for everyone. Parking can be a bit tricky but it's worth the trip. Outdoor and indoor seating.

Great Cafe! Came in here with a few co workers to have lunch. I ordered the salmon rice bowl. I was surprised thinking it would be more like Poke and raw salmon but it was cooked! Took me some time to adjust mentally but it was really good! Service was great tentative workers, all were so friendly and welcoming. Ambiance was nice, Very lowkey cafe vibes. I loved all the repurposed history and cool local artifacts!

This place is excellent. Very nice service, delicious food, great coffee. Cute vibe. 10/10 recommend. The chilequiles burrito is a must and so is the salmon rice bowl. Im coming back just for those two things! Oh and the dirty chai + lavender and golden chai are so yummy. Go go!

#48 in the coffeeshop chronicles. The iced James Brown coffee was kind of amazing the first time I tried it, and was one of the better-tasting trendy lattes I've had recently. The latte has brown sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon. So it's definitely on the sweeter side - but was still delicious in it's decadence. Unfortunately the second time I came by, someone else made my drink and it was bland and mediocre; all I could taste was the oatmilk and espresso, and nothing else. So it really wasn't consistent. On a sidenote, Service could have been friendlier, but I'll leave it at that. ********************* My Ratings: 1 Star: Terrible; just thinking about it makes me angry. 2 Stars: Wasn't a fan so Not likely to return. 3 Stars: Meh. Great local spot! I've lived here for a little bit now and finally came by this place. Usually I am not too much a breakfast person but they do lunch too, so finally the need was real, and lunch was served! Great outdoor seating options. They have some on the street side, then they share an off street patio (very chill/low key) with the neighborhood bar next door. So it's perfect since HC closes at 3 pm most days and Johnnys next door opens a little after - love it when neighbors can collaborate! They've got a lot of vegan, veg, and carnivore options. I had the soyrizo burrito which was really well priced for the area! $12 is cheaper than most things you can get for lunch nearby. Their coffee was really good too, even in area of very good coffee options in the immediate area. Overall, would go to again, no doubt, loved the chill outdoor eating, and the options should offer everyone a little something to eat! - Soyrizo Burrito

Stopped by here for the first time today. Had an amazing vegan Philly cheesesteak and vegan sweet potato tostada. Service was great. The chef Oscar came out and told us about our dishes. Great vibe. Will definitely be back

Cute inside no frills cafe. Not great espresso horrible pastries that are old and stale. Very low class crowd. I would skip this place but it might be the only place around here to get coffee.

Amazing place! Love it! Would highly recommend it to everybody. The food is amazing. We had chilaquiles, The Rooster burrito, and the Caprese toast, all of our dishes were delicious and on point. The coffee is amazing and probably the best I've had in years. The service was phenomenal. Everyone was very friendly and polite. The crew at the Highland Cafe are amazing humans. The ambiance is solid, music, skateboard wall, motorcycles, and art sprinkled all around the cafe make this place very cool. Will definitely come back! 10 out of 5!!!!

Fast, friendly delicious food. Been wanting to try this spot for a few years. I've been back a couple times and will def be coming back to try their extensive menu options. Both times enjoyed to-go and looking forward to dine in their eclectic space. Highly recommend.

I was impressed specifically with the Chilaquiles Verdes. When I saw them on the menu, I was a little sketical they would be good. Gottdamn! The spice on the salsa verde was perfect. The layers of goodness was perfection! The hubs had a breakfast bowl and he enjoyed each bit. We will def come back and continue to try and explore the menu more.

The cafe takes about 15 minutes to be delivered when it's empty. When we got it, it was not worth the wait. Also order chilaquiles, the worst taste you will ever taste especially in Highland Park. Also got it 25 minutes later. But worst of all - My wife bought a bagel from a shop down a block down the street. They had the audacity to ask us to leave because no outside food is allowed in the outside seating area. The food cost too much, does not taste even decent, and the staff and owner are too much deal with. Don't come here and go somewhere else.

Met a longtime friend here for coffee early on a weekend morning. We were the only customers at the cafe at the time. There was music playing throughout the restaurant and it was cranked up so that it was hard to carry on a conversation. I politely asked the person behind the register if the music could be turned down slightly and was met with a flat refusal. If I had not already ordered, I would have just walked out. Otherwise, the coffee was decent and the food was so/so. There are a lot of other choices for cafes in this area of Highland Park. I won't be going back to this one due to the bad customer service experience.

The chilaquiles are soooo good! I am also obsessed with the James brown or the Mayan if I'm feeling nostalgic cuz it reminds me of a coffee version of abuelitas. 10/10 recommend.

Food/service is inconsistent, 1st time was great! came back and it was not as good. The first time my latte looked like a piece of art. This time it looked rushed and you can definitely taste the difference. Im not sure if it was the food or the customer service. Its hard to eat when you have incense burning in front of your face. I suggest you find a better place to put them. Some where away from where your customer eats. Not sure if I will be back..

I stopped by here while in highland park and I'm soooo glad I did. My friend and I weren't very hungry so we decided to split the chilaquiles burrito. It was SO good. Portion size was huge and I thought the pricing was very reasonable. And above all, food was delicious. I would 100% come back here when back in the area. They also had lavender lattes on the menu so I'll be sure to try that next time I return. Lots of veggie options and place was pretty packed so definitely a popular option in the area.

Don't order for delivery they don't even have the courtesy to call you and tell you what things they are out of and see if you'd like to modify your order. After 30min of my app saying they excepted my order & are making it only to suddenly get a notification from Uber that my order has been canceled after seeing pix on yelp of their chilaquiles it appears they don't make chilaquile sauce they use salsa

Perfect breakfast or lunch spot, very takeout friendly but also has a quiet back patio that we love. The breakfast is the best, chilaquiles and breakfast burrito is a must but if you want something lighter they have loaded egg scrambles that look really good. Salmon salad and spicy chicken sandwich are both great lunch options. Iced lattes are essential, they have the best crushed ice that takes every drink to the next level. Exactly what you need on a hot day!

Great food, speedy service, cute location! Favorites include chilaquiles verde and the oatmeal.
