I like to order two chicken kabobs with tzatziki sauce. Instead of the pita bread, I substitute fries (gluten free). There are gambling machines and TV screens inside and in the outdoor area. At night they have an outdoor flame going (except for during the summer). They stay open till 230am, but stop serving food around 1-ish. It's actually called Hilt, not The Hilt -- on NE Alberta between 19th and 20th in Portland, Oregon.

Bad reviews only for amazing service, great customer service, good vibes 😎 very chill the food was beyond amazing. Drinks small yet was very tasty and delicious great price. Love the serving size just perfect.

Namibia was very rude & RACIST !! She didn’t greet us when walking in, I was showing a friend a video on my phone and she reprimanded me for playing a 15 second video out loud in a bar with music blasting. We ordered food and watched them begin preparing it, we kept our tab open as we were planning to order more. After giving us a number for food & 10 mins later she tells us that we need to pay before she can put the food in. Mind you, we think we’re waiting on the food to be cooked during this time. She says we need to pay now or the foods not coming, we told her to take the food off then. We had witnesses her interactions with non brown people at the bar and it was the complete opposite. Again, we already saw them starting to prepare our order. We had a previous tab and tipped but she hasn’t even picked that receipt up, so decided to erase the previous tip we had given her and give it Tania, the new bartender that had just come onto shift. Although she hadn’t personally made our drinks, she was friendly and polite! Wont be back here ! And you would think with a name like Namibia (clearly not American) she would be more compassionate and open to brown people smh

Google
Great neighborhood bar, good food, happy servers. Not kid friendly. 21+ The food is always changing and made with care, from pizza to burgers, salads, and wraps, with a wide menu to choose from, lots of choices.. There is always a custom drink special and lots of beers on tap. Heated patio with tons of seati ng and dog friendly. Great neighborhood bar/restaurant that specializes in Mediterranean, mostly. Play some pinball or video poker. Sit at the bar, street side, or the large covered patio, with heaters. They close early on last Thursday.

Google
Tasty food and drinks, very casual atmosphere, indoor and outdoor seating, outdoor porch with infinity fireplace. Dark inside, large covered/heated outdoor patio. Pinball, great place to chill and catch Alberta Street vibe. Popular with locals.

Google
This place is excellent. Dive bar vibes but what you will find is great staff and excellent food. Order the falafel wrap and the fries if you get a chance. Bonus that their kitchen stays open late. Despite being busy the bartenders are so very on top of things.

Crystal B.

Google
Tania and Allen the bartenders are lively. I always have a good time @ the hilt. They have a very accommodating back patio with lots of seating that's covered. Good atmosphere.

Michelle L.

Google
Veg and non-veg, delicious food. My hubby got the Reuben and loved it. The hummus was bomb too. Inside has bar flies pinned to their barstools watching baseball and playing video gambling and the outside has a smoky, dog-friendly covered patio with an interesting bonsai plant collection. Good vibes. This place is dope. Will be back!

Yelp
Great fries. Large covered patio with TVs. I'm required to post at least 85 characters but the above just about covers it.

Yelp
Good drinks, good time, good bar. My pal loves this place and we were on Alberta today, and stopped in for a couple and a snack. Nice HH, see menu. Crisp chicken, a little bread-heavy, but earth-shattering on that fry! Nice! Calamari, for me, meh, okay, but nothing to report there...and the soup...oh....the soup.... I don't like giving bad reviews, but watery, no salt, no flavor, no nothing on that soup--nuff said. Fries are where it's at. Drink prices are stellar, and the company is friendly and willing to chat! Dog-friendly and just a good place, if you're looking for a casual bar.

Yelp
Hilt is by far my favorite bar in Portland! The staff are so friendly and pour great drinks. Devin, especially, is the best! He's so personable and gets to know all the customers. The cheese fries are delicious and the Jell-O shots are potent.. Prices are very reasonable compared to most places in Portland. They have an awesome covered patio with a fire pit. They also have video lottery and we win a ridiculous amount of the time. Can't go wrong with this place!
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome community dive bar. Great crowd, decent food, and a nice atmosphere to hang out with an awesome back patio and fire pit. The barkeep is on it with your drinks being served up fast and courteous. The people don't give af about u and everyone is just doing their thing. The food isn't Michelin, but for a dive bar it's above par and well worth the money. Overall just an awesome place to grab a drink with friends, or your best furry friend and chillax.

Yelp
Many a time have I finished work late only to find all of my normal favorites closed for late night eating. Enter the Hilt - friendly and funky servers. I was almost intimidared the first time thinking that this was just a bar, only to find the most delightful dishes. This place has a lot of character and my favorites late night snacks are the Greek salad and the souvlaki. I lived in Greece for three years and this comes close. The tatziki tastes authentic. Delish.
google avatar

Sean R.

Yelp
My 2nd favorite dive on Alberta. And the food isn't too bad either, surprisingly decent gyro and a few other kinda Mediterranean style offerings. They got a big covered patio for smoking and 1 pool table.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Super divey. Super warm welcome. The Hilt is great for bar bites and good old-fashioned cocktail. Our bartender was super professional and personable.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Mediterranean food plus Portland pub seems like an obvious champion, but The Hilt was more average than all-star. Of course, a-ok is still good (3-stars). The patio dining area (after ordering at the bar) was a relaxing environment to enjoy a couple beers while downing a couple beers. Saganaki (Fried Graviera cheese) with Lemon & Pita bread was a-to-ok, but surprisingly dull lacking citrus zing or cheesy flavor. A more seductive order of Lamb-Pork Souvlaki (skewers) with Pita bread and Tzatziki also failed to be a superstar, yet, was filling. This place may not be awesomeness to the hilt, but it is The Hilt.
google avatar

Jennifer J.

Yelp
Best local spot! Great drinks, playful cocktails and the BEST saganaki. I come once a week for the saganaki and never regret it.

Yelp
The food is good, beautiful setting and great service!!! Love it!! And also drinks taste great! Great bartender

Yelp
This is a solid bar. I often work in an office nearby, and will meet folks here for a beer after work. It is a bit dive-y, but sometimes that fits the bill. They have plenty of outdoor seating. It isn't a nice patio or anything -- just some picnic tables alongside the road -- but it is convenient, and rarely too busy to grab a seat. They have a partnership with an app called Kuto where you can pay for your food by having it come out of your checking account rather than a credit card. I recommend trying it out -- the company will give you $6 off your first order, which is a nice spif. I haven't had food here, so cannot comment on food quality.

Yelp
This place has endured several changes over the years. The Greek food offered are pretty good and the lounge area has improved. So far so good
google avatar

Tara G.

Yelp
Bar/Patio had a great drinks and draft list and plenty of separated seating - 5/5 stars Ordered the calamari and it was over cooked and really salty - 2/5 stars Their other food options looked really good so looking so I'm forward to trying some of their daily specials!
google avatar

Mashall S.

Yelp
Good food. Good brews. Got the Hellenic Burger and it was fresh not some of that prefrozen shaped shit. This was the real juicy deal. Not a huge beef water but it was good. I would enjoy if they put a beyond burger on the menu in stead of the garbanzo that I'm not a fan of although I haven't tried it. Over all great atmosphere and service. They have all the liquor and you need.
google avatar

Chad C.

Yelp
This place is still slingin' drinks like usual. So glad they're still going strong! What's funny is that I always forget this place is actually a mediterranean restaurant. Their hummus is the best I've ever had! If I'm with friends we always order their appetizer combo, it's great with just enough of everything for about 3 people to have a taste of it all. I usually order a hilt burger on top of that, the mix of poblano and the cheese they use is so delicious! For the pandemic they have a good sized outdoor area and every table has at least one heat source near it.
google avatar

Shannon H.

Yelp
This is probably a great average neighborhood bar. If I lived here I could see frequenting it for a beer or bar food. As a tourist the presentation was a little underwhelming. We ordered the appetizer sampler and it was actually really good as was the cider. I was thrown off by the smoking patio though. It's covered so the smoke really lingers and I'm not used to smelling cigarette smoke while eating. It was really off putting. They have non smoking tables outside but it definitely wouldn't have mattered. And it was so dark inside we didn't want to sit there. Definitely a good dive bar if that's what you're looking for.
google avatar

Nia P.

Yelp
Food was overcooked, including the burger, and when asked for a new order of fries they never arrived. Hopefully others will have a better experience.
google avatar

Caley S.

Yelp
Wonderful patio, drinks and service are always perfect every time I visit, no matter the time! Absolutely the definition of neighborhood bar for Alberta!
google avatar

Yelp
Black ceilings, dark maroon walls, cool artwork and a pretty good burger. All the makings of a great dive bar. Oh don't forget the cheap beer during happy hour. Can't forget that. I enjoy a good dive bar. I've been to several around town now and even others on this very street. Simply, I was hungry and it was starting to rain and I liked the menu options. The menu is Greek influenced with several traditional dishes plus hummus and gyros. Also kasseri cheese. Yum. It was great on a burger. I got the happy hour burger with lettuce, tomatoes, mayo and red onion. I also got the prior mentioned cheese. It was gooooood. Meat seasoned right, the saltiness of the cheese and the crispness of the veggies. It was enough, I didn't need to gorge myself on anything else. Believe me, I was surprised but then again, in Portland should it? Good food is everywhere. I need to find more of it. Enjoy.

Yelp
Loved the food! The bartender was very friendly and excellent customer service! The falafel sandwich, fish & chips were amazing. Mojito is one of my favorite drinks and these guys made the Virgin and alcohol one with the freshest mint possible!
google avatar

Wesley S.

Yelp
I came here around midnight on a Sunday (technically Monday at this point) with my girlfriend. We sat down at the bar and ordered two menu items along with a beer on tap. Since it was so late in the night, only a limited menu was available, but we were happy with our selections: a cheeseburger and a chicken gyro. Both were pretty good and satisfying. I recommend coming here for late night food!
google avatar

Abhishek A.

Yelp
Went today for burger week. They were serving burger with beef patty. I simply asked if it could be substituted with chicken. Response of the waiter "if you want chicken burger or veggie burger for burger week, there are other locations to go grab at. Not here!!!" At that response I simply walked out. I will never step into that restaurant. There are better way to respond or offer customer service.

Joe G.

Yelp
Awkward bartender, seemed more focused chatting with friends sitting at the bar, than focusing on the tips he could have received from customers ordering at the well. Outdoor seating is the best! There is a firepit and it is covered. Parking was close by. Will return here for some weekend fun.

M L.

Yelp
Dive bar feels with really good food... The special of chicken tenders with green chili mac AND fries is great.
google avatar

Kristen M.

Yelp
Ridiculously crispy wings, oldies, casual service.. what's not to like? Dog friendly patio with plenary of indoor and outdoor space too.

Mark H.

Yelp
Be wary of the main bartender (blonde guy with short hair). He has consistently either overcharged me--especially during happy hour, or given me the wrong change on a number of occasions. He always plays dumb when confronted about it. I dismissed it the first couple of times, but at this point I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one it's happened to. It's not so much about the money, but it's happened so many times now and it really fu&king irks me so I decided to write about it.
google avatar

Mark A.

Yelp
Nicer interior than I was expecting from the outside; at least the bar area. The bathroom was disgusting and littered with toilet paper. It also had no soap nor paper towels. Asked for a rum and coke and 90% sure I got a Vanilla Coke and rum. Gross. Cheese fries were soggy, and the choice of sharp cheese was poor as it didn't melt correctly and just lied on top as a slice instead of permeating the fries. Probably wouldn't go again.
google avatar

Maria K.

Yelp
Great food and great patio seating - they have gyros, calamari, and their Rueben is my favorite Reuben. They have other food, those are just my go to! Always have a good list of bars on tap, and Have a great list of cocktails. Their outdoor seating is covered WITH heating so their whole back patio actually stays relatively warm.

Yelp
If possible, I'd give this place 1.5 stars. A gentleman outside proclaimed it to be THE best burger on Alberta. Given we were already hungry, that glowing review was all we needed so we headed in. I wish we hadn't. The tap list on the table wasn't accurate so three of us ordered different things and all ended up with the same cider. (Not a huge deal but I'm visiting Portland and interested in trying as many ciders as I can). My friend's kale and beet salad was hideous. It looked like lettuce garnishes had been swiped off other diner's plates and cobbled together with a few slices of canned beets (which in themselves are a crime against humanity) and topped with indistinguishable white dressing that may as well come from a sperm bank. My companions ordered burgers and I don't think even one was cooked as requested. They reported the taste as "okay." Our server did graciously remove the salad approximation from the bill (and thankfully the table as just a few more minutes and I think it might have left on it's own). And then we sat. And sat. And sat. No one clearly eating or drinking anything - all we wanted was to leave but the server was uninterested. And, to add insult to injury, we had an "automatic" 20% gratuity added to the bill because there were seven of us. To be fair, she did warn us when we sat down that this was policy and had we received decent service, it would have fine.

teresa m.

Yelp
we wanted to return to the hilt for dinner and did so last evening with a friend....we sat on the patio and it was nice and un crowded....my partner and i shared a pbr tall boy...our friend had the red wine...next, we shared the humus plate and the garbanzo burger with a mixed green side salad.....our friend had the saganaki pita bread with cheese, and the holt reuben with fries....the drinks/food are superb....the staff is real friendly, quick, and funny......it was nice and relaxing....

Yelp
So, it was alright. I don't suggest playing Ghostbusters pinball as it's a rip off newer stern. Batman's alright tho., At least the flippers are 3/4" closer together. Really tho, the service was friendly, the beer was cold, they have Street side seating as well as a patio and of course indoor seating. As far as food goes, I had the "french" dip. Quotes because this sandwich had nothing to do with France. It was trying to hard, calling it a french dip is misleading. It had stinky Greek cheese, giardinair like peppers, red onion, and surprisingly tasty roast beef, on a crusty, toasted baguette. There was horseradish advertised, but it didn't come through. The jus was ok, I feel it lacked seasoning, but I appreciate it when food tastes good enough I don't have to put salt on it. Other bits... It could use a thorough dusting, the crowd is pretty much Alberta standard. Basically my biggest gripe is they need to rename the sandwich, it was really tasty, it just took me eating half of it before I appreciated it. Call it the hilt dip and it's a solid four star joint.
google avatar

JP P.

Yelp
This place has the best veggie burger in town. Came for the first time since covid and it was even better than I remembered. My companion had the meat burger and was also satisfied. This place has been a favorite for ages and I'm so glad they're still operating during the pandemic. Huge patio and happy hour goes till 7!

Yelp
Well well well. I just got back home from a nice evening with friends at the Hilt. Apparently this place is pretty new on Alberta and it seems like a welcome addition. They've got comfortable but Spartan decore - the walls aren't plastered in posters and the booths are not crazy looking, but they are plentiful! With good options for both small and large groups! There is also a killer patio that looks like it'd be great for some twilight boozing! The menu is a bit bar food and a bit of Mediterranean flair. The boyfriend and I ordered the roasted eggplant croquettes while we waited for the rest of our group. I love eggplant, but the boyfriend ...not so much. But even he liked these! I found the eggplant to be mild and tender (as opposed to bitter and tough as it can sometimes be), and the cheese filling had a bit of a spicy zing! The really nice thing though is all the food on the menu is under $10, even the sandwiches and entrees! Tons of veggie and potentially vegan options too. Drinks are also pretty reasonable; a totally healthy sized mojito ran me $5.50. For dinner I had the wild mushroom fettuccine. and the boyfriend got the Hilt burger, but were $8. I can't speak for the goodness of the burger (boyfriend says it was good) but I can say the fries were stellar. I really really really REALLY enjoyed the fettuccine; made with oyster and portabella mushrooms it was a great texture and flavor explosion in my mouth. Of course, the good food and drinks were supported by ambiance and good service. We were bobbing our heads to Blitzen Trapper, Devo, The Pixies, and Bloc Party, all played at a reasonable noise level! The bartender was super friendly, and accommodating to our big party...which is more than can be said for some other places we've gone to! He also didn't mind splitting the check, and yes; they do take cards! And they have AC! All really good things in my book.

Yelp
The Hilt is pretty good. I can dig it. H - for house made liquor infusions I - Intimate kind of setting L - lights down low T - Too cool for school I can't comment on the food although their Happy Hour menu runs until 7pm and it did indeed look good. They have a ton of house-made infusions from vodka, whiskey, and even tequila. Each with several yummy flavors to choose from. My poison of the night was the Habanerro Vodka with some grapefruit juice. For only $5.50 it was a decent deal. They also have a bunch of good looking beers (most looked local?) that were on tap. They have outdoor seating which was nice. Indoors it's dimly lit with some candles in various areas and intimate highboys you can sit at in addition to booths. The staff is super friendly and make good recommendations. As I was only coming in for a quick drink to kill time, I can't comment on much else. I would come back though especially for HH.

Patrick M.

Yelp
Well the fries were so overcooked, unbelievable, was expecting a wonderful meal, just couldn't get over tne fries, almost humorous yet not.
google avatar

Natisha N.

Yelp
Food was ok. I wasn't diggin the frys I kinda got ends of them. The burger was great but would be better with tomato's. The drink I had was called the original sin and was made of mostly whiskey and apple cider and I was way to strong for me to drink. Other wise than that I absolutely loved the side window tables. We sat in the back corner so we could be alone and it was nice. Only thing i suggest is putting a light above the table or maybe a candle at the table.
google avatar

Anna N.

Yelp
Love that they serve Hoegaarden beer! We came here after we were shunned at another HH place. The bartender here is very sweet and accomodating. She took our orders & filled our drinks with a quickness. We were starving so we were grateful that our food came out soOO quick. We ordered the lamb gyro, chicken gyro, kasseri fries and calamari. Everyone of them was delicious & cheap! The bar had a movie playing w/subtitles. We were really grateful for that because the music was pretty loud. It was a pleasant night out w/decent entertainment & good food. I love that they have HH all day Sunday until closing (2:30am). Its hard to find a decent HH that doesn't close at 11pm on Sunday that serves great food.
google avatar

Haif A.

Yelp
Dive bar had decent bar food not great fine dining but for bar food will do the trick when your out drinking, or have been drinking. Quality like a diner, small one room place, few videos games but its on a good street.
google avatar

Krystal F.

Yelp
I was a bit torn on my rating for this place. I usually find The Hilt to be a pretty solid bar and a great place to go have happy hour drinks and food. I met a friend yesterday for happy hour and catching up and was less than pleased with the service we received. We sat out on their outdoor patio and the server seemed to be very displeased with either the fact that he was working Monday happy hour, or with the fact that he had to serve customers period. The food and drinks we ordered were just as we expected. I will continue to patronize this bar as I really like the location, their happy hour, and their patio. I'm hoping that this was just an off night for the lack of good service we received. If you don't want to provide table service, make customers order at the bar. I don't mind...really.
google avatar

Howard G.

Yelp
OK food in a hipster dive bar setting that is soooo Portland. The cuisine is standard: burgers, calamari, fish n chips, chicken sandwich, hummus and pita, salads, blah blah blah. Would I eat here again? Probably not...Radio Room is better.

Jonathan H.

Yelp
Don't use Grubhub. It's a waste of time. After an hour and a half you'll end up with missing food, hangry, several botched interactions with stressed humans and an incorrect refund Hilt's food is great. Their staff work hard! GrubHub for delivery? Not! The order showed up right on time from a friendly driver with 40% missing. After an hour and half of effort I ended up with an incorrect refund, a sandwich, salad, and cold fries to split between five hangry humans. Pick it up yourself and tip the staff. They're hustling for you!
google avatar

Kyla S.

Yelp
Was told to leave after 1.5 minutes of being there because I was finishing my coffee from next door. All 7 of my girlfriends had ordered cocktails. I was just going to order one myself but decided it's not worth it to spend money at a place that employs such rude humans. I can see why I've lived around the corner for 5 years and wondered why no one goes here.

Yelp
Went here for a Surprise V-day dinner this week. Wow, I was surprised! Drinks: YUMMY, and AFFORDABLE- Had Orange-Spice Infused Bulleit Bourbon and it tasted like candy. I figure 7 bucks aint shabby. My fiance had a Plaid Pantry, I believe- many elements going all up in that drank! Spicy, tart, laced with sweet. They have several infusions that vary daily or weekly. It's a little adventure each time you're there because they all sound yummy. Food: Teetering on bar-style food, it was still very good for "Bar Food". We had some sweet potato fries as a starter. Large serving size, and decent flavors. Only gripe? The cheese placed on top was not melted all the way, so it blanketed the fries, making them stick to the cheese but the cheese wouldn't easily separate for eating. If ordering anything with Caesar dressing, surprisingly, this place makes the real deal: Anchovy and raw egg are in the dressing, and my American taste buds weren't expecting that. I dined on a garbanzo and pepper burger, with a greek salad. Feta-a-plenty is what I would deem that dish. I'm not complaining, either. The burger was a little greasy but perhaps it was from the pan frying, but the bun was the right amount of buttery-crispy and the salad tasted alive with flavors of lemon and oil. Service: Friendly... which, I know I need to get past this but when I go to the east side, I usually don't expect much in this realm. However, our server was patient and very friendly while being laid back. I think he was covering the floor alone because our drinks could have been checked on a little sooner and the ordering process took a little while. Atmosphere: No ridiculous "Down with the man" music ,blasting punk or anything else I try to avoid- instead, the live Bob Dylan record was playing. Dark, but still enough light to not squint across the table. Big buck hunter? Sold.

Yelp
Great service, food was good. Tried the Gyro (lamb) and it was tasty! Close to home, so probably will go back again. Especially during Happy Hour!
google avatar

Alysia M.

Yelp
This is definitely a "Don't judge a book by its cover" type of place. I came here with my very sophisticated MIL and was worried it wouldn't be her type of place. She had the cob salad and I had the mushroom chicken burger. Excellent service and the food was fantastic.
google avatar

Nickola J.

Yelp
We came here after another dining option fell through, and I was pretty unhappy about going into a dark bar in the middle of a sunny day. The table and menus were greasy, which bothered me a lot, but the decor would have been charming on a Saturday night. They were playing old monster movies on the TV behind the bar, which was cool, and I like having something like that to keep the conversation going. The food was actually pretty good. I just had the kasseri, but I tried my partner's burger, which had a veggie patty, and it was pretty great. If I ever come back, I'll definitely get one of my own... but I'll make it a point to visit in the evening.
google avatar

Jamakea T.

Yelp
Their indoor atmosphere and outdoor patio are like night and day. Inside its seedy, gritty and just all around greasy. In desperate need of a makeover. The outdoor patio is awesome!! Plenty of large picnic tables and also free water bowels for your dog!! Great place to chill out for a crisp cold beer when it's warm outside.

Yelp
I went to the Hilt last night for the first time. The food and drinks were good but the service was terrible. The waitress brought the wrong drinks and kept saying "I don't know, that's just what the bar tender gave me." She was rude throughout the evening.
