I am all-in on the Hintonburg Public House's decor. It's some industrial, funky beach house vibing place.
I wanted to love it here. The super cool paintings on the wall, the bright blue shelf for alcohol, the distressed wood bar and its mismatched furniture all excited me when I first sat down at the bar around 6:30 on a weeknight.
The place was busy, with a bunch of the tables full, but strangely, nobody at the bar itself. Looking around, it was all pretty much middle-aged women and about three or four guys, including my husband. And at 27 years old, I think I was the youngest one in there other than the screaming infant in the corner.
Unfortunately, the Public House hit on two of my bar pet peeves right off the bat: Bartenders didn't give us water and it was cafeteria-like bright in there. To be fair, the lights did dim (and some pop rock came on an iPod) around 7PM, but it was still pretty overwhelmingly bright in there.
We weren't planning on having any food, but horseradish green beans caught my husband's eye on the sides menu, and so we ordered them. ($5). I swear to you, there were five total green beans on the tiniest plate I've ever seen. They tried to mask this by putting the beans on top of some green plate decoration, but wow. Also, they were just plain steamed green beans, with no horseradish in sight, which is kind of appalling for the price.
Beers, too, were pricey at $7 and up, but I fear I must just get used to this up here in Canada. Some of the beers on the menu weren't on tap anymore, which is only minorly frustrating, but it should have been an easy fix since the menus are just printed sheets of computer paper. However, the beers we did have were tasty.
Also, I feel like they should have a better cocktail menu, since they could probably do well with it and they definitely have the liquor stocked. The current one only has a couple things on it and they're not super inspiring -- at least to me.
Staff was pleasant and were just fine. No complaints there, but no raves either.
I can get behind some of what the Hintonburg Public House is trying to do, but some of it is frustrating and confusing. Someone said to come by on a Saturday night, and I'm willing to do so and maybe the experience won't be so blah.
