The Best Bars and Pubs in Ottawa and Gatineau | Eater Montreal

"This cozy neighbourhood haunt is quite the all-rounder, with a wide range of Canadian craft beers on the menu, and a solid selection of Canadian wines, as well as a few house cocktails. Hearty, filling pub food completes the offerings, and there’s weekend brunch, too." - Tim Forster

Such a lovely place! The atmosphere is cozy and thoughtfully themed, with great attention to detail. There are no old or unpleasant smells inside — everything feels fresh and clean. I was greeted by a very friendly girl with golden hair 😉. My sandwich was absolutely delicious and came out super fast. A great spot in Hintonburg — I’ll definitely be back!

Had a delicious brunch. We had the Huevos and the Pastrami plates. Both were excellent. Service was equally good. Nice location.

Had a lovely time in this little gem of a restaurant in Hintonburg! Try the Cucumber dip and the Fish n’ Chips! Came with my lovely wife before going to Bluesfest and I reccomend for a casual dinery and local beer!

Finally tried The Hintonburg Public House. It's an English style pub owned by a Canadian publican. I went with the ol' pub standby of fish & chips drizzled with their own signature vinegar. Best of all, it has a great, rotating selection of craft beer including Overflow Brewing's Rise And Shine Wit Beer and Local Brewery's lager. An exemplary pub with great service. Definitely going back. 🍻🇨🇦🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

This place was open on a stat holiday and it was a life saver. Went in for Brunch, which was quite busy, grabbed a table and ordered burgers & grilled cheese. Their potatoes are incredibly good. I highly recommend the grilled cheese too! Favorite brunch spot for sure !

Google
This was a pleasant surprise! Went here when the original destination was closed. Everything was perfect! The staff were amazing. The food was delicious. The atmosphere was comfortable. We felt welcomed and enjoyed the experience.

Google
This place feels homey, has nice cutlery and coffee mugs, interesting and fun staff, and phenomenal breakfast and lunch. I regret not having photos to share but the presentation, portion, and flavor of the haloomi salad dish was excellent. Great bacon and eggs 👍 and good selection of craft beer and cider.

Yelp
I met a friend for some food and drinks at the Hintonburg Public House. I totally forgot to check out if the restrooms were gendered and/or accessible, as I spent my visit sitting outside. The outdoor patio section in front of the restaurant was pretty wonderful for enjoying a beautiful day. The menu offered delicious, elevated bar staples like pretzels, chips and dip and fish and chips; everything is made fresh and is just so delicious. There are lots of vegetarian and vegan options. I didn't anticipate loving this place as much as I did and can't wait to be able to return.

Yelp
A good local hintonburg spot for beer and pub food. A nice casual spot to grab a quick bite on a weekday . The food is a bit hit or miss, but overall pretty good The burger was a bit on the dry side, but it was paired with really flavorful homemade ketchup and garlic aioli. The poutine was made with an oddly thin gravy that was chicken stock flavored, but the fries are perfect. An average spot overall

John W.

Yelp
Good food but every encounter I have had with staff has been demeaning or snooty. I have decided never to return.

Yelp
Chill patio option on Wellington. Food was good, but nothing to write home about. Pretty standard fare. IMO there are more interesting places to check out nearby.

Yelp
I went to this place with some friends from out of town last summer to catch up and was very happy to see how they were operating during covid. I felt very safe at all times in the restaurant. The first thing that the server did was seat us in a location away from other people (the restaurant is fairly spaced out and roomy), and then get our contact information for covid tracing. I ordered some classic bacon and eggs brunch and it was delicious. The bacon was fried to a crisp and the eggs were made perfect. Thei5 hash browns looked like they were homemade rather than the little cubes that we always see. Hoping to head over again this coming summer!

Yelp
Please please please read my other review on their brunch as the offering they have for brunch is still fabulous! We came here early this summer for some dinner and I heard about the amazing burger they had here. The selling point of this burger was that they cooked it medium rare. That's right, it's a bit bloody just the way grandpa liked it and just the way you should be able to have it!!! Well only do that with locally sourced beef...unless you're locally sourced beef is XL from Alberta...ouch to far? I ended up getting the burger and my friend got the fish and chips and another friend the pork chop. We got some appetizers including the country sausage, marinated cheese curds and some cheese. The cheese curds are lightly marinated and the flavours are light but it's good. The country sausage is also good and cheese is cheese which means it's damn delicious. The burger was decent sized. I took my first bite and even though the quality of the beef was good I felt it lacked a lot of flavour. The blood was delicious though...OK I kid I kid...or maybe I don't. Either way it was a lot of hype but little flavour. The meal is definitely filling and maybe they've changed the burger since but I was hoping it'd be much better when I went. The fish and chips were alright as well. I'm not sure what it was but the batter wasn't to great at the time. The fish, delicious! I'm not sure if I'd come back for dinner but I'd definitely come back for brunch as I found it a lot more interesting menu. The dinner menu felt high quality pub food that I felt could have been a lot better.

Yelp
Very expensive mediocre food. I've tried the fish and chips and the mac and cheese and wasn't thrilled with either. Very few vegetarian options. My jaw dropped at the bill. Would have given 2 stars because it's not like it was bad food or bad service, but wow the bill. I was shocked.

Yelp
I came here as a group of 3 for a drink on Saturday night. The interior of the place is really interesting - kind of a retro/crafty/farmhouse vibe. Lots of interesting art and fixtures on the wall. We got fries to share which were really good (very hot!) but can't speak to the rest of the menu. Our server was friendly and helpful answering my questions about the beer options. It took awhile for her to come back to check on us (I wanted to ask for more ketchup!) but she was cleaning up the bar and as it was nearing the end of the night it's understandable. A few beers on tap and more options in cans/bottles; I tried a blueberry blonde which was good. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the neighbourhood.

Yelp
Excellent grass-feed beef burgers and wonderful friendly service. The appetizer section can use better selection but the mains and their beer selections are great. I will avoid the bbq chips, it was not that great. I recommend this place with friends. You are given the space and time to enjoy your meal.

Yelp
Lots of beers on tap - including local brews from Beyond the Pale. Lots of craft beers in bottles as well. Warm and cozy atmosphere - no TV.

Yelp
The open and fresh country-pub feeling you get in here is a nice surprise for Wellington st. It's not very cozy or fancy but it is functional (they have Shaker-style chairs hanging on the wall) and a nice escape from the noise or elements. Draft beer selection is not great but they do have Muskoka's Mad Tom IPA on tap, which I highly recommend if you like strong beer. They have other good micro-brews in bottle too, such as Barley Days from Wellington, Ontario. The friendly bar man also brought water to our table without asking for it. We did not have a big meal here as it was early afternoon and they were between brunch and dinner, so the menu was limited. Still some good options for a hit of protein: a serious looking burger, a delicious scotch egg with house made mustard, and marinated cheese curds (the latter two items being low-priced appetizers). Everything is "gourmet" quality and hand made, mainly with local produce. I think the prices are reasonable considering nothing is mass-produced.

Yelp
This was my first time back to Ottawa in years and so I joined a couple friends for drinks, the Friday night of my arrival. We just had a horrible experience at Trio, down the street and decided to change venues and ended up at the Hintonburg Public House, a cozy, casual gastro-pub kinda place The place was relatively full at about midnight but we easily found a spot. We were promptly greeted and provided with a beer menu that is printed on the label of a wine bottle. The selection of beers was diverse and suits a variety of tastes. The server explained some of the beers and any menu changes which helped us decide. We also decided on a late-night snack of just fries, which came with a house-made aioli and ketchup. The other menu items looked good but we just weren't hungry enough. :( (big sad face) Our server was great. He checked on our table regularly and near the end of the night, as people cleared out, stopped by our table to ask if there was anything we'd like to listen to as we finished our evening. "Paul Simon's Graceland" slipped off my tongue so easily and so he put on the whole album... I bet those tunes are still stuck in their heads!

Yelp
The best poutine I have ever tasted! It was a small-ish serving, but so worth the cost. The establishment is tiny but we only waited 10 mins for a table on a busy night. Unfortunately, the table was very close to the door. We will return, but probably earlier in the evening to avoid the "door table". :)

Danielle G.

Yelp
This might be the worst bar in Ottawa. Very poorly managed, very rude, slow, and unmotivated staff. The drinks are also VERY light/ or watered down. Save your time & money and avoid this bar at ALL COSTS. Walk a few steps down and go to 10 fourteen or literally ANYWHERE ELSE IN OTTAWA. You're welcome.

Yelp
My friend and I stopped by here Monday night while she was in town for work. We wanted to try somewhere new neither of us had been and had a few friends recommend the HPH. There were good vegetarian options for my friend, as well as a burger and other nest options for the carnivore in me. Drinks: We started with a local gin (North of 7) and tonic for my friend, and a Beyond the Pale IPA for myself. Both were delicious, and I'll be looking to stock the Beyond the Pale in my fridge at home. Starters: We ordered our food to come out as it was ready, but to start we ordered the jerk cauliflower (not super spicy, good flavour, maybe a little undercooked), marinated St. Alberts cheese curds (yumm!) and fries with garlic aioli and house made ketchup (excellent). Mains: We were both in a soup mood for this dinner. My friend ordered the soup of the day, a purée of white beans, truffle oil and lemon. It was excellent. I had the clam chowder - also delicious. Really good flavour. Overall, the atmosphere was nice, the staff were friendly and knowledgable and the food was great. Will definitely return.

Yelp
I've been refraining from writing reviews lately- but I really disliked this place. I was looking for brunch or lunch somewhere near by. Art-Is-In bakery was jam packed so I kept walking. The menu was a little pretentious. And there were antlers on the wall wearing a gas mask. The place would have been perfectly Portlandia had they just 'put a bird on it' My server was new and wasn't able to recommend what to eat. But he was very nice. I asked for a lemonade and he made it himself. I actually don't know if it was on their menu. I didn't see any non-alcholic options. I ordered the cod fish and chips. When he brought it to be table I could immediately see that this wasn't going to be great. The batter on the fish was as blonde as it could be. Almost white. Major chef error as the oil must not have been hot enough. Inside was pretty gooey and the fish wasn't really cooked. It also tasted as though it hadn't been seasoned at all. Everything was very bland. The garlic aoli for the fries didn't taste like it had any garlic in it. I longed for salt and pepper on the table. I wouldn't try this place again. You either season your food or put salt and pepper on the tables. I feel bad for the tough review but there was nothing redeeming about this place.
google avatar

Jim L.

Yelp
The service was nice and friendly. But when it comes to the food, I can't remember a worse brunch. We both ordered the scrambled eggs. What we got was overcooked, flavourless scrambled eggs, a couple of slices of fried back bacon (the highlight of the dish) and the most vapid, mealy home fries I have ever eaten. I'm not even sure that they saw a frying pan. The coffee was nothing to write home about. And they don't serve toast with the eggs. So, two coffees and two scrambled eggs for $33 was not what I would call value for money. We won't go back.

Yelp
I have always been a bit skeptical of the HPH. The decor is hipster/artsy, the drink menu looks good (but pricey) and the food is interesting. I had been here for drinks a couple of times and was not all that enthusiastic about the drink prices, so when my girlfriend and I decided to go there for food I was a little apprehensive. Unfortunately they didn't do enough to dispell my apprehension. First the good, the decor and atmosphere. I really like the art, and the funky furniture, and drink menu wrapped around an old wine bottle. It really adds an air of uniqueness to what could have ended up as a generic pub. The drink menus were cool, and the selection decent. Good beer selection, all craft beer including a rotating cask. I had a very interesting IPA from Bicycle Craft Brewery, cloudy with an almost creamy texture while my girlfriend went for white wine. The one she had was nice, but it was the cheapest on the menu at $8, they should have some less expensive house wine in her opinion. The not so good was the food. I had their burger which was cooked well, with interesting sauce on the sauteed onions and mushrooms, but it was small. Now I am not a big eater but I found the burger to be not so big, while the fries were too mushy for my taste. At least the homemmade ketchup was good. My girlfriend had the fish and chips, which was generally good but it struggled to live up to the price tag. I just found that everything was a few dollars too expensive than what it needed to be. The waitress was prompt and decently polite, but she wasn't very good at answering my question about how big one of the menu items was. I thought her tone of voice in that exchange could have been better, but maybe I am just nitpicking. Overall I am still on the fence about HPH. Sure the beer selection is interesting and the decor cool, but I am struggling to justify the price tag.

Yelp
I am all-in on the Hintonburg Public House's decor. It's some industrial, funky beach house vibing place. I wanted to love it here. The super cool paintings on the wall, the bright blue shelf for alcohol, the distressed wood bar and its mismatched furniture all excited me when I first sat down at the bar around 6:30 on a weeknight. The place was busy, with a bunch of the tables full, but strangely, nobody at the bar itself. Looking around, it was all pretty much middle-aged women and about three or four guys, including my husband. And at 27 years old, I think I was the youngest one in there other than the screaming infant in the corner. Unfortunately, the Public House hit on two of my bar pet peeves right off the bat: Bartenders didn't give us water and it was cafeteria-like bright in there. To be fair, the lights did dim (and some pop rock came on an iPod) around 7PM, but it was still pretty overwhelmingly bright in there. We weren't planning on having any food, but horseradish green beans caught my husband's eye on the sides menu, and so we ordered them. ($5). I swear to you, there were five total green beans on the tiniest plate I've ever seen. They tried to mask this by putting the beans on top of some green plate decoration, but wow. Also, they were just plain steamed green beans, with no horseradish in sight, which is kind of appalling for the price. Beers, too, were pricey at $7 and up, but I fear I must just get used to this up here in Canada. Some of the beers on the menu weren't on tap anymore, which is only minorly frustrating, but it should have been an easy fix since the menus are just printed sheets of computer paper. However, the beers we did have were tasty. Also, I feel like they should have a better cocktail menu, since they could probably do well with it and they definitely have the liquor stocked. The current one only has a couple things on it and they're not super inspiring -- at least to me. Staff was pleasant and were just fine. No complaints there, but no raves either. I can get behind some of what the Hintonburg Public House is trying to do, but some of it is frustrating and confusing. Someone said to come by on a Saturday night, and I'm willing to do so and maybe the experience won't be so blah.

Yelp
Great newish spot in the heart of Hintonburg. A must visit for me when Im in Ottawa. Not only is Hintonburg the neighbourhood full of amazing little gems like Suzy Q, and vintage stores, HPH (as it's lovingly referred to) is amazing. Seasonal delicious cocktails, great local focused wine list of fun wines from Niagara & the county and the menu...... oh the menu. My favourite comfort yet seasonal food all wrapped up deliciously on different vintage china. The best part is the space and the fact that it's open nearly all day and night so you can pop in whenever you need an HPH fix. Great addition to the Ottawa food scene.

Yelp
Had a wonderful early meal here on a Friday night. The atmosphere was great,it was packed, and I was happy to see it is a family friendly place, so I can invite friends with kids next time. I went with a group of six, so we showed up early (around 5:15) and got a table around 5:50, so not too long of a wait. We started with bar snacks and appetizers. The Pickled Eggs were the perfect amount of tangyness which balanced well with the flavour of the soft yolk. The smoked almonds were good as well, but nothing special, but the amount of almonds was perfect for all 6 of us to share. We also shared a Lamb shoulder appetizer that was amazing, nice and moist, not overcooked. For my main I picked a Chicken Confit Sandwich with bacon. Excellent, I loved it, it was as if someone had made the best chicken salad ever, and then put it in a sandwich, added bacon (always a good thing), great bread as well. My husband had Fish and Chips, with homemade tartar sauce. He found it a bit under seasoned, but the fish was perfectly moist and flaky, the fries are some of the best I have had in Ottawa, and the tartar sauce was amazing. So yummy. Among the group of us we all agreed that some of the items were underseasoned, but not to the point that we still didn't enjoy the food. Also the prices are great, definitely affordable. We will definitely be coming back here, the food and atmosphere are hard to beat.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place, the menu sounded fun and unique. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable, and that's the only reason I'm giving this place 3 stars. We ordered fish and chips and Ploughman's plate to share. The fish was a lousy two small pieces, not particularly flavourful but at least the texture was nice and flaky. A few of the fries were soggy and undercooked. I don't think I have the highest standards for my fish and chips, but these were definitely lackluster. The Ploughman's plate includes a pickled egg (nice), two slices of cheese, a few slices of duck, a bit of rather acidic jam and a piece of bread (ours tasted stale but maybe it's the type of flour they use? Who knows). I can think of a better way to spend $15 (their burger in comparison to this sounds like a great deal). All in all, I felt like this place overpromised and underdelivered. Not going back.

Yelp
A great edition to the Hintonburg dinning scene! We went for brunch during the first week they were open. The menu has something for everyone from tried and true favorites (e.g., classic burger and fries and fish and chips) to more innovative options (e.g., pulled duck and hash browns and a lamb sandwich). In our party of four, everyone had something different and was happy with their selections. My only critic is that the pulled duck and hash could have used more seasoning but maybe that's just me.... The beer list is top notch rivaling that of the Gastro Pub. The wine menu is limited but has obviously been put together with great care. It includes several well priced offerings from boutique Canadian producers. Our server mentioned that corkage may be offered in the near future. Yay! The service was excellent. Thanks Nile! Looking forward to returning for dinner soon.
google avatar

Darren B.

Yelp
The menu is small but has a good mix of interesting plates and the usual favourites you might expect (i.e. fish & chips). Their burgers however are a couple notches above typical burgers. They aren't overcooked like most places and they are presented with different combinations of condiments and always on the freshest of rolls. Similarly their beer selection is not long, but they rotate various craft breweries and there is always a fun selection to choose from.

Yelp
This was an enjoyable place to go. Went there on a Friday and managed to get a seat. Great selection of beer and wine. Fantastic service and a really awesome menu.

Yelp
Time to start off a new year with the slightly less glowing reviews. I truly do hate leaving bad reviews but I always do with the hope that the things mentioned at least improve, plus management always has the option to reply to any less than positive review (just most seem to not do that yet on yelp yet, not sure why). My friend suggested this place for dinner since it was the new talked about opening in town so since I was visiting, I took his advice. The ambiance is great - definitely on the hipster side of things, which is what my friend mentioned it would be like. The service is excellent and everyone was great, so the stars are for them. On the downside, there was the food. And in a restaurant, that is a pretty huge downside. The menu items that we enjoyed were the country sausage, squash galette and duck confit. I usually like le noble cheese and sumac jelly but the combination just gets overpowered by the jelly, could definitely use a different cheese so you don't just taste the sumac. The crispy cod was just regular fish and chips, pretty bland and shared the same problem as the beef shoulder - the fries (tasteless and over-fried). In addition, my beef shoulder tasted more like wine than beef. When your dinner is more inebriated than you are, it's an issue. Then came the dessert and well, what looked like a fluffy chocolate souffle was so hard we had to stab it with our spoons, but that pales in comparison to the apple curd tart. That tart could survive a nuclear war and it even bent my friend's spoon. The filling was great mind you, just the pastry needs some more tlc. As for cocktails, those fared better than the food, with the seasonal cranberry/maple/brandy the clear winner of the bunch for us. Finally, it was time to leave and when I got up after sitting on that bench for over 3 hours (hadn't seen my friend in ages), I almost fell because my legs were dead asleep. For the love of good circulation, those benches need cushions! Re-cap: restaurant has a lot of potential, don't get me wrong, but a lot of menu items really need to be re-worked.

Yelp
This is a favourite neighbourhood joint. Great community feel and popular rotating taps, as well as a decent selection of wine by the glass and by the bottle. Favourite dishes include fish and chips, the burger, and best of all, the vegetarian burger. The kids' menu is also quite good and the space, while still having a funky vibe, is family friendly. The constantly changing artwork, most of it local, is also a nice touch and a great conversation starter!
google avatar

Allan-Micheal F.

Yelp
Where to start with this place. They have a good beer selection and to me that's worth a couple of stars. My only problem, albeit was a major factor for me was the menu was pricey. The food was meh at best, I had the fish and chips my gf had the veggie burger. After 4 beers combined and our food we paid just over $100. I get your in hintonburg but that's astronomical for sub par food.
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
I am altogether very pleased with my excursion to the Hintonburg Public House. The ambiance has a vintage feel with a long wooden bar and quaint wooden tables that include pew seating for one half of the entire restaurant along the wall. Many of the dishes look at though they've been rescued from your grandmother's attic and aren't inclined to match their partner, which I always enjoy. The food was delicious and the selection was good. There could be an additional main on the menu, but I was more than happy with the fish and chips that I ordered, and my dining companion quite enjoyed his burger. The fries are fantastic, but could be piled a little higher, which would also make the large plates look a little more full. This is just ever-so-slight criticism, as both the service and the food was amazing. I will definitely return in the new year!
google avatar

Margaret W.

Yelp
Yes, the menu may be as limited as the floor space but these people know how to squeeze as much flavour into a meal as they do people into a space (I mean a lot). If you plan on going during the supper hour be prepared to wait a few minutes because this is a popular spot, especially on the weekends. There's a reason for that, no, two reasons: THE FOOD and THE SERVICE. It's nice to find a place where the burgers taste delicious but it's even nicer when the serving staff are polite, friendly, and helpful. I ordered the HPH Burger which comes with home made fries and home made ketchup. The ketchup was not too sweet and the fries were not too salty. Just perfectly seasoned! Both were Yummy! On the HPH burger itself are sautéed onions, sautéed mushrooms, St. Albert's Old Cheddar Cheese, and HPH Sauce. The beef for the burger comes direct from the O'Brien Family Farm. The O'Briens have a contract to supply beef to HPH. The burgers are usually made with the outside well done and the inside raw so that you can taste the excellent tartar flavour of the beef. Due to digestive difficulties, I requested that it be cooked through and my server was not offended at my request (as they are in some places). Still the best burger I've had in a long, long time. Yes, the seating was a little squishy but I came for the meal, not to stare at the walls. I was delighted by the food and amused by the décor.

Yelp
Had a tasty happy hour beverage in this hip, welcoming establishment, void of pretension. The offerings of local beers is decent and the atmosphere is relaxed, yet lively, making you want to stay for a while. I'll definitely go back...but will show up early, as it can get pretty busy.

Abbey W.

Yelp
Went here a couple of weeks ago with a friend and we both said we would be back again. The menu isn't big so it makes deciding on what you want to eat a lot easier. We both had the burger and it was amazing. Everything they make is made in house fresh and they use a lot of locally sourced products. I will be back for sure as not only was the food great but so was the service.

Isabelle Z.

Yelp
I was really excited to try this place but the beer list was underwhelming and the food wasn't good... as a craft beer lover I was totally disappointed and the food was WAY too expensive for the quality.
google avatar

Mélanie P.

Yelp
This place is fantastic. It is a bit more expensive than one might expect but the food definitely lives up to it. I come here quite often and the service has always been phenomenal. I tend to avoid weekend nights as they do get quite busy and I prefer spending time here on quieter days. This is one of my favourite places in ottawa to just relax, have good conversation and enjoy some nibbles and a beer.

Yelp
Why does every hipster chick i know want to go here??? It's small, boring and had a pretentious staff... The food Is mediocre at best! I ordered a India pale ale, and twerp wearing his prerequisite skinny jeans that served me asked do you know what that is?? Yes I know what it is...i said. Thinking in my head I should say just go get me the Fu@#Ing beer! However I listened to him explain what it was. If i hadn't been on a first date I would have been more of a dick! So Hintonburg pub, yes I said pub and not public house. You won't see me back.

Yelp
I went there for a mini reunion and was looking forward to this experience. Let's just say NOTHING was disappointing. From the look of the place, art work, choice of beer, meals, ambiance. ... even the washrooms. The service was relaxed and welcoming. Our server was brilliant, knowledgeable, friendly, sweet, on top of her game. Loved the crowd. .... definitely will be back. ... Please come and take a load off. ... enjoy. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Had some of the better fish and chips I've had in a while, and liked the local beer selection. Will definitely head back.

My experience here was coming for a few pints with my sister while visiting her in Ottawa. The beer was good, with an okay selection. Experience with wait staff was pleasant. The place was loud, not ideal for talking. I liked the decor and atmosphere. Nothing on the menu for me to eat, so I would not come here for dinner or lunch, but is is a nice place to grab a few beers if you do not mind some noise.

Yelp
Pretty tasty, cozy little hipster vibe. The food was kinda over-priced, but really good. The apps were a bit of a miss (marinated cheese curds for example, that weren't so much traditional cheese curds) but the mains were great and full of vegetables as opposed to the regular pub potato offerings. Gets super busy though, so it's worth a slightly earlier sit down.

Yelp
Not sure how to rate this...Because it is ALWAYS PACKED!!!!! I had to go...what is the craze.....what is so great about this place???? The interior looks like grandma's kitchen during a big family dinner when all the old pieces of furniture from the basement and garage are brought in order to seat all 50 ppl showing up. Not quite a garage sale...but almost. I was a bite uncomfortable by the menu...but that's my fault...I'm trying something new, got to be open minded. I felt as though a lot of the items came out of an old cellar and were pickled. It truly is a visit to your Grandmas house. It's a different kind of Pub (Public House Origin), probably a more authentic type. I'm sure men who drink a lot like their pickled, hearty food. I can't say it's my favorite, but I'd go again. To give it another try now that I'm more prepared what to expect. And it is packed...so its got to be good.

Yelp
Once upon a time... (Yesterday lol) It was raining like crazy, so we ducked into The Public House, for a drink and some lunch. We waited to be seated, and waited and waited some more, eventhough the place was basically 9/10's empty. We were finally seated and got the menu and the Wine/Beer List. The food that we chose was tasty for sure! However, the experience was ruined. 1) We were seated at a table that we had to put a bowl under the table, because it was raining on us, INSIDE the restaurant! 2) The service was flaky. The staff seemed dazed and really did not pay attention to their customers. 3) We were TOLD to go to another table and we had to pick up ALL of our dishes and move. No help there. Basicaly no please or thank-you, we were kicked off our table by the staff. 4) At the end of it all, once we finished our lunch, with a lot of waving of arms, we got the check. There were 3 of us and the bill came to about $90.00. I believe, that they should have comped us for at LEAST our drinks. Nope! Had to pay full price, eventhough it was me that got the brunt of the rain, again, inside the restaruant! The entire left side of my sweater was soaked! Never Again!

Yelp
I came here recently after wanting to try this restaurant for a long time. I had the coconut curry cabbage roll but honestly, I didn't think it tasted very good. My friend got the burger and said it was delicious. The decor is nice, cozy, and hip. Service was excellent.

Yelp
The decor in the Public House is really adorable and completely on trend, and the art in there is fantastic and well curated. We enjoyed our food, and especially appreciated the home made ketchup. But we came in a party of four, and ended up, essentially, watching each other eat their dinner 1 by 1. We all made our orders, but the waitress somehow didn't hear 2 of us, which we only found out 30 minutes later after we had watched two of our party finish their burgers and finally asked "is our tourtiere coming?" That's when we found out the order hadn't been put in, and that the tourtiere, despite being $12, was too small to eat alone for lunch, so we ordered a burger, got it 15 minutes later, and the half of our party who ate their burgers got to watch us eat our burgers. I don't think I would have come on here and complained about it if we received more than half-hearted apologies from our waitress, but we didn't get so much as a free drink, a free dessert, a discount, anyyytthiinngggg. We came in for lunch, ate our lunch in shifts, and it was the most unpleasant lunch we ever paid over $100 for.

Yelp
This is precisely what you look for when you go out. Exquisite food, outstanding service and a perfectly cozy ambiance. Chapeau!

Yelp
What a lovely cozy "sympathique" little place. The food is a modern take on the pub classics. On the menu you'll find pickled egg or onion, sausage, burgers, fish and chips, cheese plates, pork chops etc. But forget whatever images that just conjured up. Take those menu items and make them with love and care, with fresh local ingredients (substituting perhaps the usual ingredients in order to use something local). The mayo for the fries is house-made and usually has some sort of surprise in it like garlic scape or something. There is a wide selection of cheese plates, each accompanied by a perfect small food pairing -- beets, apple butter, or something. But again, if such a description conjures up images of something just a little too trendy, too "du jour", forget that too. The warm ambiance and friendly staff (just-right friendly, not in your face overly friendly) and pub atmosphere have just the right amount of cozy pub and just the right amount of trendy, and all the food is lovely. In the end, it's just pub food so don't come expecting more. But it's wonderful pub food in a wonderful atmosphere.

Yelp
In short: Delicious food. Inconsistent portion sizes. Bad service. For food, I had the veggie pot pie. Totally delicious but max 4" in diameter with zero side dishes. My friend had the fish and chips, which she said was also delicious and came on a big heaping plate. There was nothing on the menu to suggest that these were not both main courses. I was still hungry after my dish, so I decided to order something else, but our server, who had initially been attentive, had long since disappeared and was no longer refilling our empty water glasses. And there were only maybe five tables of people in the whole place split between two servers. I finally got up and got a menu myself. Then it still took her forever to come and see if we wanted to order something else. I ended up ordering a salad, which was also pretty good. Saved a few per cent on the tip but would rather have just had good service.
