My boyfriend , his family and I came for brunch thinking we were going be ordering plates. We all had googled their menu before hand to decide what we will be ordering. I get overwhelm with my ADHD on figuring out what to eat. We learn it was a buffet after we were sat down. Okay no problem. I order a cocktail along with my boyfriend and his sister. The cocktail was delicious. It was one trip only for price of 27-28 dollars for adults. It was very limited on selection. I will say their fish , chicken and catfish nugget was salty. Gravy and Biscuit was good as well the pasta. I think we might come for dinner to try see if it was better but did wish option to order from menu instead buffet. It was really wasn't thought out well in my opinion.

I didn’t stay there overnight. We just went for brunch. When we got there, they did not have the reservation I made a week ago. Although they had tables available. Miss Frances was sweet. Thank you Miss Frances for being kind. The food options are limited. They were out of everything, the chicken looked terrible. We ended up waiting for fresh food to come out. Still no grits or fresh eggs even after waiting 30 minutes. The catfish and fresh chicken was good, but they pour honey over it, bad idea considering people or children who may be allergic. Fish should have been in one container , again thinking of allergies. But once again, thank you Miss Frances for being kind. She was the best part of my experience there. Oh, don’t forget to tell people you charge a credit card and drink fee. That would have been nice to know up front. I would have brought cash with me instead.

Enjoyed a Father’s Day brunch with my husband today. The food was over the top amazing! Shrimp and grits and biscuits and gravy were delicious as was the carrot cake! Service was friendly and welcoming. The history is amazing and the house is lovely. It’s a hidden gem! Highly recommend!

Google
Kicking off birthday week with brunch at The Historic Magnolia House did not disappoint! Arrived to a Mother's Day Buffet with a hint of jazz and singer Rhonda Thomas! That alone was worth the visit! She was fantastic! The buffet was generous and tasty and the staff was beyond phenomenal! Definitely recommend a visit to this historic Green Book site!

The history alone was enough to leave me in aww of this place. The book nerd that I am, I wanted to visit local bookstores and stay at The Historical Magnolia House in the James Baldwin Room for my birthday. I love this place so much. The staff was kind and friendly. The house was clean and I have never slept so good in my life. I had a good time, good food and would absolutely come again. My only wish is that walls could talk. The stories this place could tell...my God. I love black history, it can not be erased, no matter how hard people try. The Magnolia House will always have a special place in my heart ❤️. Loved it!

I had the pleasure of staying in this historic home last spring. As a writer, it was awe-inspiring to be in the James Baldwin room. The hostess was incredibly friendly and the lounge room was a perfect hangout spot to read and have coffee. I look forward to returning again.

Yelp
A piece of Black History in Greensboro. Nestled in the heart of Greensboro, The Magnolia House is a beautifully preserved piece of African American history. Dating back to the early 20th century, this bed and breakfast was once a safe haven for Black travelers during the segregation era, listed in the historic Green Book as one of the few places where African Americans could find lodging, fine dining, and entertainment in the South. Today, The Magnolia House continues its legacy, offering visitors a unique blend of history, hospitality, and authentic Southern cuisine. Atmosphere & Historical Significance From the moment you arrive, you can feel the deep history embedded in the walls of The Magnolia House. The elegant yet homey décor transports guests back in time while celebrating the achievements of African American culture. The house has hosted legends such as Ray Charles, Jackie Robinson, and James Brown, and stepping inside feels like walking through a living museum. Our Dining Experience The Magnolia House isn't just a historic inn--it's also known for its incredible Southern cuisine. Yelp
This is a historic landmark, one of only a few surviving Green locations. "Greenbook" you may ask? Go to the website or look up greenbook online. These locations fed and have shelter to African American travelers in the Jim Crow South for decades. Today's Magnolia House still feeds and gives shelter to all. As for the food. We met on a lazy GHOE Sunday morning for brunch after a very eventful weekend. We were smoking the first seated for 10am brunch I believe. We shared the roasted sweet potato and beets which had caramelized onions ghost cheese and spinach. It was amazing and I will try to duplicate. Fried green tomatoes were also tasty. The show stopper was the oxtail and grits. The grits were excellent and super creamy. The oxtail were very messy, not super fatty and we're very well cooked. Just excellent. The atmosphere was great and service was attentive, even with a trainee always in tow.

Yelp
I came here this past Saturday with my friend who treated me to brunch. We made a reservation for 1pm. It's very cute and it has a lot of history. While we waited for our table to be ready, we were in the living room where they played music. The decor was very nice. We were greeted by attentive staff and I was happy they seated us by the window. It's a little smaller than I thought it would be but they do have outdoor seating. Luckily, there wasn't a lot of people there and parking was easy. There is a small lot across the street. Pros: Very clean, low noise level, attentive staff, very good drinks, good food. Although the food was good, it was nothing to write home about. It did fall a little flat for me even when I ordered something pretty basic. I was slightly disappointed that my French toast came with a berry compote that wasn't compote. You can't call it berry compote if there isn't a thickness to it. Basically I got blueberries and 2 blackberries. I'm sorry it's not compote. Cons: Even with the reservation and it wasn't a lot of people, we still had to wait to be seated. Overall, be prepared to wait on your drinks and food. If you're in a rush, this is not the place for you. Although the staff was attentive, it felt like we had two servers who didn't communicate with each other. When one came, the other one came 2 minutes later. Even though I wasn't wowed, I definitely would like to try it again and maybe try dinner. They only serve dinner on Friday nights from 5-9. I think it's worth a try and they were reasonably priced. I don't want to give it a 3 but more of a 3 and a half stars. When I return, I'll be sure to give an update.

Yelp
We went to view the venue for a wedding and try out their food since they have great wedding packages. Service starts off as tentative. Literally, 4 people asked us if we had a reservation and tried to seat us. After that, the decline started. We moved from inside to outside and it was as if they forgot about us. We never got water nor our food. I noticed people that were seated after us got their entrees. The menu appears to be enticing. We ordered okra, wings, French toast and chicken but we never saw it. The employees are extremely nice. However, when we decided to leave due to lack of service, our waitress was at the front counter. She asked did I want another drink. No apology or mention of our order. On a positive note the summer renaissance and the hibiscus margarita are delicious. This review popped up as incomplete. Which is why it's being posted late! However, the manager is blatantly lying. I called and canceled our reservation by phone the day before. I spoke with a woman unfortunately I don't remember her name. We moved outside after I asked could we be seated outside because it was too loud. I would NEVER up and move without doing so. Besides, I didn't want to switch waiters. Hence me pointing out how nice the employees were. I provided the pros and cons. The sad part is I wanted to try it again because it seemed like a nice establishment in general. Everybody has off days. But, to lie like that...chilleeee! I gain nothing from sharing my experience on here. Clearly the communication is lacking since you're giving out misinformation. Be blessed.

Yelp
Beautiful Black Owned bed a breakfast with history. Right on the edge of Benedict College, this location is also a venue you can rent out. I came for a lovely event, and we were in the backyard in a heated tent. Staff were nice and food was tasty. This B&B has been listed in the Green book numerous times. I think they may have actual photos of that framed in the house. That book guided Black people when to travel, eat, and stay during segregation and even after.

Yelp
FIVE STARS! Drove up to Greensboro, NC and stayed at the Historic Magnolia House. Not too far from Bennett College & NC A&T. When you get the opportunity, make a reservation! Maximum capacity is 10. The building is quite nice! And the staff is very accommodating and knowledgeable (Thanks Nicole!) #greenbook #boutiquehotel The rooms! We stayed in The Baldwin but we're able to look into the other 3 rooms since no one else had arrived. The typewriter works, but didn't have any ink! #smithcorona #nostalgia The toiletry boxes are curated for each room and the robes are comfortable! The slippers aren't OSFA tho #greenbook #boutiquehotel

Yelp
My partner and I were invited to visit the Historic Magnolia House and I am so glad were. I had never heard of this spot and was intrigued. When we arrived we were warmly welcomed by the host and wait staff and taken to our table and through this beautiful, historic house. I couldn't help but be amazed by how well the house had been restored and decorated. I ordered a Papaya Cocktail that was delicious. Not too weak or strong and well balanced. For appetizers we had the fried okra and fried green tomatoes. Both were executed perfectly. For dinner I ordered the 5/10/15 Salmon which tasted fresh and juicy. I love the pairing with quinoa and fresh veggies. My partner had the ribeye steak that was extremely juicy and tender. We were both very impressed with the overall quality of the food. For dessert we ended our meal with butternut pound cake that was fantastic. It was light and sweet and paired well with a whipped topping. Overall I was very impressed. The entire staff could not have been nicer or more friendly. Reading other reviews I was pretty surprised because we seemed to have a very different experience. I would certainly recommend giving the Magnolia House a try. Everything was excellent and I am looking forward to going back to try their brunch menu next.

Yelp
Wow. The Magnolia House is such a special space that offers many different ways to experience it. First of all, the history. One of the last operational Green Book locations in North Carolina, it has hosted a number of famous guests over the years. James Brown. Tina Turner. Ruth Brown. Ray Charles. Jackie Robinson. JAMES BALDWIN. To name a few. I still need to go back at some point and find someone who can tell me all of the Jimmy Baldwin stories because that's maybe the one thing I didn't get to do during my visit. I came here for an event this past fall, which took place in the back of the property under a large tented area. The space itself was truly magical with string lighting and trees and the beautiful architecture of the house to take in. We were also able to tour the house itself, which was gorgeous and included lots of historical information to read through. In addition to being a beautiful event space, Magnolia House operates as a bed and breakfast, and also has some days of the week where it operates as a restaurant for both brunch and dinner (specific days and times are listed out on their website). Greensboro in general is sometimes an afterthought when discussing the Civil Rights era and Black Southern history in general, often taking a back seat to cities like Atlanta, Montgomery, Birmingham...but spending time in spaces like Magnolia House is a reminder of the rich, rooted history that lies within Greensboro and North Carolina as a whole. Truly a treasure.

Yelp
When I saw the movie Green Book I was shocked to find out that there was a book, called the Green Book, for black travelers that listed places that were safe for black people to spend the night in. I was happy to see that the Historic Magnolia House, which was in that Green Book, still exists today. Although I didn't book a room there, I couldn't resist stopping by for brunch while I was in Greensboro. For brunch I had the french toast and chicken. The french toast was delicious, but the chicken was very dry. A visit to the Magnolia House isn't just about the food. I walked around the house as well, since the Magnolia House does have historic exhibits throughout. There is also a wall of pictures of famous people who have stayed there. The staff was very nice as well as the other guests. Overall I really enjoyed my brunch at this historic site.

Yelp
The Historic Magnolia House is a gem. I enjoyed the living museum on the property where you can learn more about this historic home and its significance to the community. The onsite restaurant is wonderful with Chef Yancey serving up delicious traditional and innovative bites. He always comes out to check on tables too so I appreciated the intentional care and service. The house is beautiful and the rooms have so much character. I think it's a wonderful place for a staycation or short weekend getaway for those in North Carolina.

Yelp
Stayed here for 2 days and Takara took care of me like I was family. Food was fantastic, nice quiet atmosphere and the room/facility was immaculate!

Yelp
MUST SEE AND EAT!!! I have no idea how this place doesn't have an overall 5 star rating. This place is Top Notch. The food is phenomenal. Just one Chef personally curating the menu. I had the fish of the day. Guess what, it comes with shrimp!!!!! I was so hype for the surprise. And they were cooked perfectly. And even warmed up well the next day. My brother had the Magnolia House Breakfast with corned beef hash. Listen here--this is the best corned beef hash I've had other than my momma's. And hers is the only one I eat. The hash was so crispy! Nobody is making it crispy. That's how I like it. Not pictured but absolutely phenomenal was the fried chicken! When I tell you it's fried to perfection!!! WHAT!!! So good. My aunt had stayed at the bed and breakfast the week before and told us how good everything was. And she did not lie. Also a historic site with great artifacts and the rooms named after cultural icons like Miles Davis room called Kind of Blue. I must stay there one day. Run don't walk to Magnolia house!

Paula K.

Yelp
They hosted a party held in my honor. Such wonderful folks. Everything was awesome. Thanks to all!!!!

Yelp
Our experience at The Magnolia House was amazing the service was very attentive and professional. The food was a little slow but arrived piping hot and was very delicious. Walking into the Magnolia House was like stepping back in time. Very well appointed with historical pictures and information. I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
The ambiance and beauty -- My goodness! The history just makes being here even more special. The Negro Motorist Green Book. Our food was beautifully presented and delicious. We had a late reservation for Sunday Brunch, and the place was packed! Our server, Madison, was cordial, not overbearing but attentive. I recommend here for an easy Sunday afternoon but you will definitely need a reservation!

Yelp
Great place for brunch! I loved the French toast and the chicken sandwich was both flavorful and cooked to perfection. All of the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The restaurant itself is charming due to its historicity and decor. This place is great for both groups and a date.

Yelp
Very nice brunch in an historic place. Great service and great food. Loved that they featured the Green book there. I will like to stay there one day. I recommend this place to stay and for brunch.

Yelp
The service was not trained yet but very sweet. We had patience and reminded them about items missing from or order. The food was amazing.the three of us ordered different things and everything was perfect. The house itself is interesting. I would have loved to visit the kitchen since I bake. Maybe next time. Remember to have a reservation.

Tennie S.

Yelp
We ate here Friday night. It's in a period of transition but the four of us had excellent meals Two had salmon. My husband said it was some of best salmon he has ever had. I had an excellent beef and pork ragu with linguini and roasted asparagus - delicious. They have craft beers, cocktails and wines. Not all on the menu were available but the zinfandel I had was great. This is a wonderfully restored house that served as a place for black Americans to stay in the past and was listed on The Green Book. We were taken on a tour of this historic house. It was a marvelous evening.

Yelp
The Historic Magnolia House is a must see location when visiting Greensboro. Whether you come for brunch or stay at the bed-and-breakfast, you're in for a real treat! The bed-n-breakfast just completed a massive renovation with award-winning interior design. Today, I tried their brunch and it was delicious. There was also live music playing the entire afternoon. The only reason why I'm not giving this review five stars is because the service was not good. They had a private event in their outdoor pavilion which slow down brunch service tremendously. Most of us waited 30 minutes for drinks and an hour for our meal. Although the food was full of flavor, our wings were served cold. The salmon cakes were absolutely divine! The watermelon salad was refreshing but spicy, so be aware. The ambiance was magical and the food was very tasty but the staff is in need of proper hospitality training.

Yelp
Dinner with friends. The experience from beginning to end was lovely. Menu choices caused me to order four items, could not decide. Strawberry salad Ribs Wings Fried green tomatoes Amongst the other's meals were fried okra, shrimp and grits, buttermilk pie with caramel whip cream, and fried catfish. No complaints. Nicole was the service team member assisting us. She certainly knows hospitality. Look forward to returning for a Sunday brunch.

Yelp
Delicious food, great service and perfect morning vibe in a beautiful historic setting.

Winoka M.

Yelp
Attended a shower with a preordered menu. We received food 2 hours later than event started. 12 people at the table and we received food at different times. Some people got food just before we left event 3 hrs. Later. Server was trying hard but never apologized for inconsistency or dropping a drink on one patron. Food was subpar and not at all the quality we expected. Very nice restoration but needs work on service and food!
google avatar

Kara M.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place but sadly it fell way below my expectations. The food was terribly bland & not at all worth the money. We got the French toast & chicken & fish/shrimp & grits. French toast was pitiful and looked to be made of Merita light bread. Sad. The chicken was a wing and a half & had no taste. The shrimp & grits were cold and again unseasoned. I would give this place another try as it a beautiful & historical venue & the staff was pleasant & attentive however there needs to be some changes made to the food/menu.
google avatar

Deniece R.

Yelp
Best Staff! Beautiful location! 4 stars because there wasn't any music or dessert on the night I went. Ordered fish and grits. Fish was delicious, grits needed butter salt and Cheese.

Angela P.

Yelp
A few weeks ago I was here for a show to see Rhonda Thomas and couldn't find a seat 4/5 different times wherever I sat I was told the seat was taken, I feel I threw away 84 dollars, I was actually embarrassed me and my boyfriend left, I will not return here again, this was my second time attending a affair there. Bad business.

Anita B.

Yelp
Bad all the way around. Food is horrible, customer service is bad too. Save yourself the aggravation and growling stomach. Give your support to an establishment that will appreciate your business. Run the other way! You'll thank yourselves later.
google avatar

Casandra O.

Yelp
Message of today is when it comes to judging a black owned business are you really that dissatisfied or are you being extremely critical because black people own an establishment. Is it jealousy? Crabs in a barrel mentality? Racism? Do you truly want to support a black owned business or just complain because deep down you feel black people don't deserve your dollars? I say all this because I was concerned about eating here after reading all the negative reviews online. However, I still took a chance and an ate brunch today for the first time at the Magnolia House after recently relocating to Greensboro and I was simply blown away. The vibe is unmatched in the area and a clear standout in the many places that I have visited. The food and cocktails were stellar (I had the fish and grits, and the hibiscus margarita), staff were so accommodating and some of the nicest people I have met. I was talking about my experience to my friends and family out of state and it was on my heart to say this because I was so confused. I go out to eat often the food is priced for a normal sit down restaurant in 2022, and the portion size was huge! The menu is not pricey at all! If you can't afford it just say that. I'm just going to go out on a limb and say if this place was in a major city you wouldn't be able to get access to this place without reservations well in advance. I will be back with more people and will continue to support just like y'all do with all the corporate entities that could care less about taking your dollars. Last thing, I noticed all of the negative reviews seem to be from other black people, we will never be free.

Marva M.

Yelp
Magnolia House you just made a customer for life. Everything was delicious from the shrimp deviled eggs to the collard, French toast, lemon pound cake. Thank you lord I'm fat and full. Oh and don't forget the papaya and hibiscus margaritas. Don't forget the wonderful and amazing customer services.

Yelp
I was really excited to try the Magnolia House, I had been raving about it to my friends to try to convince them to try it out with me. We finally decided to check it out, and were we disappointed. The Jazz was good, the ambiance was decent, however the food was bland and tasteless. The waffles tasted like something from a hotel breakfast buffet, the rolls were store bought Hawaiian rolls they placed in the oven to warm up (note this takes out the moisture), by the time they got to the table they were cooled down and hard around the edges. The chicken was crispy but no flavor whatsoever, KFC has better chicken in my opinion and for half the price. Overall I felt the images in the event page/ Facebook page were very misleading and didn't feel it was worth the price.

Wayne D.

Yelp
Our three night stay was wonderful! Natalie, Nicole, Justin and the entire stay could not have been more attentive. The atmosphere was peaceful, highlighted by Jazz music. Brunch was awesome, the chicken and French toast was delicious. A must try as a starter are the mac & cheese bites with the grape moonshine jelly! Great experience!

Gina F.

Yelp
My first visit to the Magnolia House was very disappointing. We were scouting the location for a future reception. I was embarrassed and wanted to jump in and offer my 16 years of banquet service to their staff that lacked proper training. It was sad. We waited an hour for our food and most items were a salad. I did try the wings and could not believe that I paid $15 for 3 of them that was served cold. Had to send them back, only to get the next three cold too. (Probably were the same wings) The majority of our food and cocktails was comped because of poor service. I noticed that the rest of the parties at the tables around us were also disgusted at the pace of the staff. Lots of walking around, but not making eye contact so you could actually ask for silverware since you dropped my entree on our table minutes ago. The House is beautiful the band was a nice touch and the history is humbling. So that it doesn't get a bad reputation, please train your wait staff on the joy of serving others. It will be a while before I patron this place again. It's too nice to have crappy service.

Janis H.

Yelp
I am in hopes that it will progress, not at all as the website presents. We were really just taken aback and disappointed. Not quite sure any of the food that was on the menu was actually soul food cooked in this house. Nothing about what I am sharing is made up or meant to be derogatoy, it is all very much factual...... Frozen Banguet chicken advertised as "Magnolia Chicken", rolls from the Food Lion bread aisle, Quaker instant grits with jar gravy mixed in, Eggo waffles, I could go on.... plastic plates, plastic utensils, one clear color knife and one white color fork crossed so eliquently over a black linen napkin??? It almost became comical when the server brought my cup of coffee in a Dollar Tree paper coffee cup. Mimosa was $12.95 for a carafe, I'm just going to leave that alone, you should as well. Menu showed 3 different peices of amazingly described cakes they had to offer, thought it could't go wrong with cake...... no cake available that day! The history of the house is so important and is being so demeaned by the false pretense of being built on SOUL and nothing they presented had an ounce of soul as an ingredient. An embarrasment to the history of the house!

Jason S.

Yelp
It was just ok. The family agreed that we have had better. They did step it up with real plates and silverware. Servers were slow to refill drinks

Yelp
Had a very nice experience. The staff was friendly, the food flavorful and the history rich. We live finding new places to eat and will be back! Thanks for a great supper

Yelp
I had my sisters bridal shower here on July 8 for about 25 people. Pros: The venue is cute. We liked the food and the set-up was really nice. Cons: The staff. Though they seemed like very nice people. It is very and I mean very unprofessional to act as if you are assisting with clean up (we had a mimosa bar, candy table, and cupcakes) but actually STEALING the food. The staff stole numerous cupcakes for which I paid $4/cupcake before the bride had even seen the cupcakes. They also helped themselves to the candy bar before the guests even had a chance! (This happened when we were taking pictures!) I really like to support black business but I would not recommended this place to anyone just because they were so unprofessional.

Trey B.

Yelp
The Historic Magnolia House has refused to return my sister's money for her Bridal Shower that was dated 6/20/20. The Pandemic and Government reugulations is making this business unable to accommodate her on the date reserved. I give BLACK owned businesses priority but this is the very reason why some of us remain reluctant. The lack of professionalism and just all around mess is beneath me.

Yelp
Awesome food and atmosphere. The service was wonderful and the jazz was perfect. We really enjoyed it. Will be going back.
