Hardly Strictly 2022: Best Restaurants and Bars for Takeout Food and Drink Near the Bluegrass Music Festival | Eater SF

"I see this as the absolute epitome of a neighborhood sports bar: cheap beer and liquor, a fairly large backyard space for smoking, vaping, and chatting with potentially other bluegrass-loving people, and a reliable place to unwind after singing along (and crying) to Brandi Carlile’s “The Eye.”" - Paolo Bicchieri

On 6.26.2025. I had the pleasure of meeting former NHL Player, Fred Berry, during my visit. Aside from hockey and Lacrosse equipment, this place is a mini hockey hall of fame. It was great to see pictures of Fred Berry's hockey career, several signed jerseys and some vintage equipment. It was great to see fiberglass and wooden hockey sticks still available for purchase. I enjoyed talking about the 1970s and 1980s style of play in NHL with Mr. Berry. Highly Recommend visiting for all hockey fans.

I stopped in with my 6-year-old, who’s getting ready for his very first hockey season. Since we’re not a hockey family, I had no idea where to start—but the staff made the whole experience easy and welcoming. Everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. One young employee even took my son over to their rink setup to shoot around while we waited for his skates to be sharpened, which absolutely made his day. They patiently answered all my questions, explained things like how often skates should be sharpened, and even walked me through details like taping a stick and why it matters. I left feeling confident and supported, and my son left even more excited to play. Highly recommend!

This is the only hockey store you need to visit. Fred is a great guy, and cares about the local hockey community. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly and will get you into gear that fits your budget.

Google
Fantastic experience. We have never been to a hockey store and my son is trying his first lessons later this year. Was a bit in awe at the amount of stuff as well as the prices. Staff was super helpful and made sure we had the best choices for our budget. We will be going back for sure if he ends up really getting into it. Thanks!!

FIGURE SKATERS: DO NOT SHARPEN YOUR SKATES HERE! I’m a figure skater (competitive at the Bronze level, skating skills at the Silver level), and I was in need of a skate sharpening, so we went to this place. The people were nice, and there were dogs which was a plus, but the next time I skated, something felt off. My spins weren’t getting as many revolutions as usual and I kept falling out of spins I would normally do just fine (I’m on jumping restrictions because of injury so I can’t comment on jumps). My overall skating felt a little off, too, but I chalked it up to just not being used to the sharpness. Then I skated again the next day, and my skating still felt weird. After I got off, I looked at my blades, and they seemed flatter than they used to be. The rocker seemed to have disappeared or have been moved back, and the end of my blade was way too curved. I asked two of the coaches at the rink to look at them, and they agreed my blades didn’t look right. My mother went to see our normal skate sharpening guy, Jan the Skate Man, and she came home and told me to put the blades with my pond skates and that they were ruined. She had to spend $350 on new blades because of a bad sharpening. This place is probably fine for hockey players, but if you’re a figure skater, do not go there. Better to have dull blades than have to spend hundreds of dollars on new ones because your normal ones are ruined.

Google
Brought 5 pairs of skates to get sharpened and was told I had to pay extra for 2 because they are new sharpens (all pairs are very used) - asked what the difference was and the answer was $10 but to had to pay it because they were already done.

Google
Complete Snobs!! If you’re not a regular or a league player or a Brookfield parent they treat you like garbage! I will never go there again!

Google
I found everything I needed at their store. My wooden Vector CCM hockey stick was for ice use, so I wanted to have something for street use . . . they sold me a composite Winn Well stick, which allows my off-ice stick protector (Wrap Around blade guard) to fit the new stick: Perfect solution! While at their stores' new location (back down the road 200 yards, near old location), I was impressed with the vast array of merchandise. I'm a Saint Louis Blues fan, so here in Milwaukee Admirals land I was glad to find another team's collectables available. Friendly, knowledgeable staff! There's an awe inspiring display of hockey memorabilia upon entry to shop too.

Yelp
This place has been the best place to go to for the last 10 years for me! Ever since I moved here from far off lands, Fred and the staff has been excellent for sharpening skates, getting equipment, trading skates, and all of my other tape, and under-clothes equipment needs! Can't find it, you'll find it at Hockey Haven!!!

Yelp
I have always really liked this store and have had many great experiences with certain employees. Unfortunately, the past few times I have been in, one employee in particular, (I believe his name was Ted) has been extremely passive aggressive and unwelcoming. He always seems to be in a bad mood and makes me and other customers I have talked to feel like a bother. I really do like this store but after these past few times I feel more hesitant to go here, and would rather drive a bit extra and go to Pure Hockey.

Chris G.

Yelp
I have been in a few times before and met the owner, Fred, an employee named TJ, and a few high school-aged employees that have been helpful. TJ is always amazing, he's eager to help and get you what you need. Service is spotty with some of the HS kids, and ESPECIALLY with Ted. Ted always seems arrogant and in a bad mood, I've yet to have a nice encounter with him. Honestly, if it wasn't for TJ and Fred, I'd have taken my business elsewhere a while ago.

Yelp
After moving here from MN, i knew what i wanted in a local hockey shop, with exceptional customer service and support, a good selection of products and reasonable prices. I found it here. I've shopped HH for the past 15 years and found the staff and owner to be resourceful. Fred Berry, a former player in the AHL for the Milwaukee Admirals, is the owner with a few long time teammates that help him run a good operation. I've worked with Paul and Hawk to get what i need from vendors like Graf, CCM, shock doctor and others. The staff do a nice job with customers and pay attention to the details. I recommend and will return.

Yelp
As someone new to the sport I needed to get gear for my child. The gentleman working the day I went in was very pleasant and helpful. He guided me to what I needed all while being budget conscious. I really appreciated that. While I have nothing to really compare this store too, it was neat to see a store completely dedicated to the sport! Go Bolts!

Yelp
Staff sharpening skates not wearing masks. A lady came in just before me with (not joking) a dozen pairs of skates for sharpening. 30minutes later, my skates are not done yet. Then staff was curt with me when I asked how much longer it would be. Maybe expedite the single pair of skates before someone getting an entire hockey team's skates done. Will find another place when I need a *quick* sharpening. This place is not it.

Yelp
Freedo, Hawk, TJ and Jason do an amazing job. They have been supplying me with equipment since I started hockey. I will always go there first. Jason is a magician with the skate sharpener, way better than Ted.

Yelp
Had quite a bit of an issue with customer service. As a retired police officer and former soldier, I have very minimal demands to be honest. Treat me with respect and I shall return said respect. It really is that simple for me. I didn't receive that here unfortunately. I had driven an hour and a half to visit this store and the customer service representatives were rude and couldn't care less about wanting to help you. I have been to Pure Hockey near me, numerous times. Although their prices are outrageous, they have at least three people greet you and attempt to help with anything you need. I think this store could be great under new supervision. Just my two cents.

Yelp
Good products and prices are offered at The Hockey Haven. Their staff will take good care of you. This is THE place to buy hockey skates as they do the fitting and molding to your feet. This is a great store!

Yelp
First time at this place although I played against the owner (Freedo) in men's league in Milwaukee a million years go at Wilson Park. He was a super good player. Anyway, it was very well stocked with equipment. My interest were skates for my 5 year old granddaughter and her father. She wanted to learn how to skate and her father did not own a skates. So I obliged as a good (deedo) would. Very well versed sales staff, purchased two pair at a reasonable price. Sales staff were not in a hurry after trying on several different makes, made sure the skates were properly fitted which is key, and properly formed to their feet. Very satisfied with the place and would recommend it to old and new skaters.

Yelp
Very nice, knowledgeable staff. Our daughter started hockey this year and they were incredibly nice and caring to be sure she had everything she needed, was comfortable and we didn't have to spend an arm and a leg. Highly recommended. We will be back for all her hockey stuff!

Jennifer L.

Yelp
We have been going to Hockey Haven for years. The staff is knowledgeable and does a good job of keeping us in our budget. The customer service is above and beyond. Thanks for always taking such good care of us.

Joe W.

Yelp
I am an older guy who picked up hockey a few years ago. Every time I go in this store they are incredibly helpful. I have never been pressured into buying anything, and have left with just their advice on occasion. I would recommend this store to anyone needing hockey advice and gear.

Sean S.

Yelp
Went to hockey Haven when my kid decided to play. Needed stuff now. Staff was great and took care of getting my son set up. They were very conscious of the fact I wasn't excited about dropping a bunch of money all at once. My son has been playing for a few years now and we have been here on a regular basis. Great people and always willing to help.

Lyle G.

Yelp
Been using these folks for years. It is a hockey store, not a hair salon...yes the boys (all current/former hockey players) may seem gruff at times, however, if you are looking for expertise, excellent gear, and decent prices this is your place. Saved me $$ a couple of years back when I thought we needed new skates and they "remolded' the current pair giving us another half year till fall season....

Yelp
I wanted to visit a local store (rather than buying off the web). I was trying to run in and buy a pair of skates for my kid. There were many people working but it seemed like everyone was working in back and not responsive to customers in the store. There are no prices on the skates so it's impossible to know what skates would fit my budget. I think if you are into hockey this store has a lot to offer. If you just want to buy some skates it might not be the best choice.

Yelp
It's ok. I usually get my skates sharpened here and sometimes they do a good job and other times not so much. They have a decent gear selection, but it's a bit overpriced. They have a good tent sale at least once a year and there's good gear there for a reasonable price.

Yelp
I absolutely love coming here! Very knowledgeable and friendly. Always willing to cut a deal, the ONLY place we go for hockey gear!! I only rated this $$$ because hockey gear ain't cheap!

Mister M.

Yelp
Rude, Inconsiderate, Arrogant - and that is just a start I prefer to shop with local merchants and am willing to pay a little more for this convenience, however the staff at Hockey Haven is terrible. Go to Hockey Locker and ask for Skip or shop on-line unless you like being treated crappy.

Derek T.

Yelp
Great local hockey shop. Love the Save of the Week special. Conveniently located and easy to access, near two local ice rinks.

J C.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years and the service is always great. At times there can be a wait for skate sharpening but that's expected. The prices seem very reasonable and the advice on products is always top notch. I've had horrible skate sharpening at other local places so I now always come here. Highly recommend.

John R.

Yelp
Store should be known for not acknowledging customers that walk in. I came in to spend a lot of money but noone acknowledged that I was even there. There was a guy even standing there not doing anything that could not say a word to us. I avoid places like this that need training in customer service, thank you for pointing me in a direction where I will be cared for as a customer, they got my money now.

Hayden L.

Yelp
Fred (owner) is a great guy and runs a good operation. I've been getting my skates sharpened at Hockey Haven for 14 years now.Good selection of products as well, including pro stock sticks. The customer service (and sharpening jobs) can occasionally be spotty with certain employees, but overall it's a good operation and my go-to LHS.

Josh K.

Yelp
My son's hockey association ordered team warm-ups from this place in Nov. Our order was not filled by this company due to an oversight. I have been trying to get them to send me the warm-ups since before Christmas. It is now the beginning of February and we still have not received our order. The staff continually gives me excuses as to why my order has not been fulfilled nor have they offered a refund 4 months after the original order was placed. Do not use you hard earned money at this business.

Mark E.

Yelp
While this store had a decent array of products the sales people are quite condecending. Do they think they are the only people who know anything about hockey - really? Given a choice, shop somewhere else.

Amber B.

Yelp
This is the only hockey place we go to! It's pretty far out of the way for us too, but the manager/owner is so nice with helping new players get all their gear, he even gave us a deal on gloves! That made us loyal customers for sure!

Dave M.

Yelp
I've had about 40 great experiences at hockey haven. The staff is always helpful and knowledgeable. I've never had a bad skate sharpening in the 15 years that I've been going here. Shop with confidence.
