The owner and the cookie left a sour taste in my mouth We wanted to try somewhere different to our usual for a Sunday Roast so booked here. It was quite a way out from where we live but I was drawn by the platter style roasts like I serve at home.
Booking - bit chaotic
My gut instinct was to cancel after a chaotic booking confirmation but pushed ahead.
Location - beautiful. I go to Midhurst and Petworth a lot so this little slice of picturesque countryside is lovely
Parking - limited but we parked next door at the village hall
Pub itself - I liked the decor and the way the pub is laid out. Water and glasses and knives and forks were already on the table.
Service - very attentive. Servers were diligent and polite.
Main course - we ordered the beef roast, warm plates were provided and the platters arrived. It all tasted GREAT. The gravy particularly was extremely flavoursome and the roast potatoes were like triple cooked chips.
Dessert - this was where it took a turn. My youngest ordered the cookie sandwich. The server said they didn’t have chocolate chip, only white chocolate chips and the cookies were “brown” this all seemed quite normal. I tried a bit of the cookies and it had a very strange taste to it. Plastic/chemical sour taste. It wiped out all other taste in my mouth and had an extremely bitter/sour after taste. I mentioned this to the sever and said I think it has too much bicarbonate of soda in. The server came back and told me she’d removed that item from bill. That wasn’t really the point so I asked her if she knew why it tasted like that. She said she’d speak to the chef. This is when the owner arrived in front of me, draped herself on the chairs and said “I hear you have a complaint about the cookies” I re-explained the taste and the most bizarre exchange happened.
“I’ve never had a complaint about them before, I eat at least one a week, we don’t have time for baking, they’re supplied by Sodt in Petworth, I keep them in a plastic container, never had a complaint, have you been drinking, do you want it taken off the bill then!”
. The fact they don’t make them is simply the answer “thanks, I’ll feed back to our supplier” I never said I was making a complaint but this was very defended confrontational behaviour in front of my kids. You can see from the Google reviews she does not take kindly to feedback but as a pub in its infancy it will only serve to see the pub fail. You need feedback to improve, you can be perfect off the bat.
