The Hollywood Donut Factory on Las Olas looks like a plain donut shop. And while the ambiance is ordinary and the service is friendly, the donuts offered inside are unique and tantalizing.
These are humungous donuts, each the size of a large hamburger bun. As I walked into this place my eyes devoured all the offerings while my mouth began to salivate and my body instantly gained a couple of pounds. The variety of choices are all mouth-watering temptations: sour cream, oreo-flavored, dulce de leche, Boston cream, banana cream, and specialties that include cronuts and bacon.
There were three of us, and we opted for a plain glazed donut, a Boston cream, and a banana cream.
The banana cream was dusted with what looked like cake crumbs and had a smooth banana filling inside a moist doughy donut. My husband loved his plain glazed. Moist, doughy, sweet, and filling, he said. I ate halfway through my huge Boston cream before I hit any custard. Although I was tad annoyed of having to wait that long to hit the jackpot, getting there was very pleasant as I chewed through moist dough topped with gooey chocolate frosting. Then, when I hit the filling, it all seemed to be in one spot, but oh so worth the wait.
Donuts average about $3.59 each and specialty items cost more. But the huge portion is worth the price and your tastebuds will thank you for the sweet treat as your waistline encourages you to do some extra exercise that day.
