Where to Celebrate Hanukkah in Houston | Eater Houston

"Everything you need to know about this bagel shop lies within its name. Hot bagels loaded with house-made cream cheese, smoked salmon by the pound, and avocado make up the menu alongside bagel kolaches, deli sandwiches, and even bagel pizzas. Get there early — a lot of the items sell out before noon." - Lane Gillespie

Houston’s Best Hangover Cures | Eater Houston

"Carbs are here to save the day, and what better way to soak up any excess booze than with bacon, egg, and cheese on a toasted Everything bagel? If lox is more your speed, try the smoked salmon sandwich with a generous serving of its house-made chive cream cheese." - Katie Holtman

This is just sad. Almost $7 for such a disappointment. Where’s the cream cheese? 95% bread 5% cream cheese. If this is what you like…by all means, to each their own. I was looking forward to a good bagel and got to work upset. Please do better. This was my first time here and happily my last.

Google
Tried the peanut butter & jelly bagel, the pizza, and the kolache from The Hot Bagel Shop—and wow, everything was incredibly good. The PB&J bagel was the perfect mix of sweet and salty, super satisfying. The pizza had a great crust and flavor, and the hot dog was way better than expected—juicy and full of flavor. Honestly, didn’t expect to love everything, but I did. Definitely worth the visit!

Google
Bagels taste like the ones you get from the grocery store, nothing special. No music nor a welcoming environment its kinda stale like the DMV. This is also a CASHLESS business, although they don't mention it until after you've waited in line and made your order. Smh. They will happily accept their tips in cash though so i guess as long as its convenient for them then you can use cash however the customers convenience doesn't matter there. The service was quick otherwise so for quick uneventful bite maybe but definitely not worth a second visit.

Such a great find for genuine awesome bagels! They serve a plethora of bagels with a huge selection of cream cheese flavoring and toppings. We tried the smoked salmon bagel and a kolache. They were both fresh and tasted great. While there Such a great find for genuinely awesome bagels! They serve a plethora of bagels with a huge selection of cream cheese flavoring and toppings. We tried the smoked salmon bagel. While there are tables to sit and enjoy the tasty treats in-house, I’d personally recommend taking them to go if you’re like me and don’t like the big crowds. This place can get packed, which is a good thing, just something to consider and account for when thinking about wait times. Customer service is good so that’s a plus. Parking can be a challenge as the adjacent lot is free but really small.

Google
I won’t lie and say the bagels/kolaches are bad, because they’re not. They’re amazing. HOWEVER, does it make sense that even if there’s 3 customers in the restaurant total and 6 workers, that the bagels consistently take 20+ minutes to come out, and then the kolaches are cold? I wouldn’t say so. Recommend this place only if you have an extra hour to spare before work, because if not, you’re definitely going to be late.

Google
It’s ironic this place is called “The Hot Bagel Shop” because after waiting 15 minutes for a bagel sandwich, I received what might be the coldest bagel in recorded history (and yes, I ate it inside the restaurant). The bagel itself was clearly auditioning for a second career as a dog chew toy (stale, tough, and joyless). The sandwich came complete with bacon that had been drying out under a heat lamp for what I can only assume was 4/5 hours, paired with refrigerator-chilled cheese that sat there defiantly un-melted. Easily the nastiest bagel sandwich I’ve ever attempted to eat.

Google
This place was jam packed on a Sunday mid morning but the line goes fast and orders are up pretty quick. Bagels are pretty solid and the selection of toppings is large! Really liked their honey walnut spread. And I love that you can buy them in 2 oz, 4 oz or 8 oz containers. Pizzas are nice as well as the mini pigs in a blanket! So many bags of them flying out of the store!

Google
Stopped by after seeing the very positive Google reviews. Got excited walking in since a lot of people were waiting for their bagels… but honestly, nothing special. We tried a bagel sandwich plus plain and onion bagels to compare, and all were pretty disappointing. Not sure how they got such strong ratings. flavors and texture need some work. The hype didn’t match the taste.

Yelp
Not only are their bagels the best in the city, but their service is incredible!!! I ordered pick up through door dash and called to tell them that I'm in front of their store but baby is sleeping so if they could call me when it's ready so I don't wake her up. Instead, Briana offered to walk out my order so baby could keep sleeping the whole time!!! Incredible!!!!!!!

Yelp
Like an east coast, small town, private college bagel shop but in Houston - amazing. I used to get a couple dozen sliced/assorted w a couple crème cheeses and drop off at client offices in The woodlands, Katy, Sugar Land etc. . They didn't know these existed - cha-Ching! - new business. Lately I'm just a post noon workout jalepeno sausage bagel dog and topo chico guy. Houston institution

Yelp
This is the place to go for Bagels - quite the selection of bagels with a variety of whipped creams and other toppings - but they also have these kolache-type weiners and they're cooked toasty. Tried the seasonal specialty bagel, the pumpkin bagel toasted. you can definitely taste the pumpkin. This is not a place to go for the ambiance, but there is a small seating area. A lot of traffic on Shepherd and you could easily pass by this inconspicuous place.

Yelp
A truly *good* bagel outside of NYC is a forever journey; across state lines, and cities, grocery store bagels, franchise bagel shops, and "breakfast" restaurants rarely hit the mark with bagels. Sure, there's "good enough," but everyone knows what they are really searching for. Hot Bagel Shop might not transport you completely to NYC, but it is really close. The bagels are tasty, soft, and rich. The sandwich options are incredibly customizable, and amazingly delicious. The ingredients are fresh, and all work together really well. And if you go for just a bagel and cream cheese - well you're going to be pretty happy with your choices too. They have a huge selection of cream cheese flavors to complement their large selection of bagel flavors. Staff were quick, and service was friendly. The restaurant is small, so you might be better off with a grab and go, but if you're already in Montrose, it's a great pit stop before you start your adventures.

Yelp
Ordered bagel and lox Everything bagel with veggie cream cheese And a *kosher Hebrew national dog bagel Bagel and lox was overly salty, the bagels themselves did not have the crunch, chew, fluff and shine of proper bagels. The cream cheese was solid. But we ordered the kosher bagel dog and as I was leaving I heard the lady behind the counter tell a gentleman that they ran out of Hebrew national and had ballpark all beef franks. To be totally honest I feel like that's wrong. You only enlighten specific customers? I mean if someone has a dietary restriction etc that's deceptive. The bagels dogs were not good. Thin dough overly crisped in the heat lamp and the dog was a funky color. Extremely disappointing to be honest, I probably could have gone to Sam's or Costco got their bakery bagels and lox and been more satisfied. Really disappointed over all I have to say

Yelp
tried the garlic bagel with cream cheese, salmon, and capers. The bagel itself was a bit too toasty on top, which muted the garlicky flavor I was hoping would really elevate the sandwich. Overall, it was good--but not quite amazing. Next time I'd probably go with a garlic & herb cream cheese to boost the flavor. Still, I'll be back to experiment and see if I can get a Lox bagel here that comes close to that classic NYC standard. Service wasnt straightforward and was nothing special. Ambiance reminded me of an old school bagel shop in nyc.

Yelp
Had high expectations for this spot and unfortunately it fell short. The staff was inattentive and a bit rude which definitely added to the subpar experience. We chose to take ours to-go but there are a few tables to sit inside. Ordered a BEC w Jalapeño Cream Cheese on an Everything Bagel. Generous amount of fillings and the jalapeño CC was great. However, the bagel was disappointing - super hard and the inside was tough. Honestly, this spot was just alright.

Yelp
I've been here probably three or four times since it's opened. It's one of my favorite bagel places inside the loop! My go to is the byo breakfast sandwich. Their everything bagels are yummy and the bacon is nice and crispy. My boyfriend has had a few different menu items. He had the breakfast burrito the first time which in his opinion could've been bigger. This recent time he had the bacon turkey sandwich which he really liked. They also have sausage kolaches so we always get one to split. Overall love this place! It is popping on the weekends. Probably took about 10 minutes to order and get our food this past time so not too bad a wait. There is some seating but it's limited and the parking lot sucks.

Yelp
First time stopping by Hot Bagel! And 100% recommend. The service was good and fast. It was an experience and to add the little kolaches were so tasty. Can't wait to stop by again when next in town!

Yelp
I've been coming here for years and recommending HBS to anyone that asks about bagels. I'm happy to see so many of my bagel photos from here in my camera roll/yelp photos. My friends are probably tired of me talking about it, I'm sure. I was surprised to see I hadn't written a review. I initially came here today though, to write an update about how I feel like the quality has decreased in the last handful of times I've ordered. I know the original owner has passed and the family is now running things so this may be the why. It's something about the ratios IMO. The bacons almost too cooked, the scrambled egg is just flimsy and not good, the sandwich will not stay together, etc :( It's probably still the best bagel spot inside the loop Order ahead on the app to skip the wait and line!

Yelp
Superb bagels. If you are looking for great bagels, breakfast sandwiches, or bagel dogs, this is the place to come. This was our go to breakfast place in Houston and we came here many times. It is important to note that it can get really busy on weekend mornings and that you may want to order online to avoid some lines/waiting. Everyone should go try this place.

Yelp
The food is wonderful The bagels are so soft and tasty. I had a breakfast veggie sandwich and it was so filling. They are so good, this is our 2nd time coming. Parking is a bear but we found there parking spaces in the back which is great. They are very nice and fast people. We love coming here
google avatar

Yelp
They were busy today again. Luckily I had preordered before I went. I love the bagel bites with the mini sausage except it's so greasy that it's hard to tell if the bagel is fully cooked or it's grease. I still ate it. The salmon bagel was delicious. I did ask for easy on the cream cheese so if this is easy then watch out. It was way too much. Like overwhelming. Really a delicious sandwich and preordering is the way to go. There was a line at 9am. No thanks.

Yelp
Ok, so I am celebrating the Thanksgiving break and I decided to treat myself. I was craving a bagel. So I found this place and decided to try it out. Upon entering the place first thing in the morning you smell fresh bagels of all sorts. The staff was friendly as they walked me through the menu. It's so many options to choose from. I decided on making my own bagel with an egg white. I do like they have a turkey bacon option. There is plenty of seating and the place is clean and everyone is working in concert. I don't eat pork, but those bagel dogs looked great. I would love a turkey option! I plan on returning for another bagel with the honey cream cheese.

Yelp
I ordered a plain bagel with ham, egg white, provolone, lettuce, onion and mayo. It was very tasty with a perfect amount of each ingredient. The customer service was great considering the amount of customers. I will be returning soon!
google avatar

Mark W.

Yelp
Nice little bagel shop in Montrose neighborhood they also have other baked hot food here the menu is all over the place so if it is your first time here, you may feel overwhelm on ordering. But the staff are very nice and answered my questions. The parking lot is a bit tight but if you come here early you will find a parking spot.

Yelp
Ain't nothing like a hot bagel! There are a variety of bagels and they are all yummy. Their cream cheeses are also delicious. I have tried their plain, jalapeño, and their chives. All yummy. love their everything bagel and their salt bagel. Their kolaches are also pretty delicious. I love their mini dogs. Their egg and sausage is really good as well. The best part about this place is the staff. They are so helpful and friendly. I just enjoyed their energy. Def planning a future trip!
google avatar

Ericka S.

Yelp
The Hot Bagel Shop is still my favorite bagel shop in Houston. Having tried numerous other bagel shops (and delis) in town, I can honestly say this shop has maintained its excellence since the '90s. My go to choices are always everything and salt bagels. To my surprise, they've even begun offering pumpkin-flavored bagels - a welcome Autumn choice. This is always my first recommendation for bagels! Service is always good.
google avatar

Alyssa E.

Yelp
If you're missing NYC bagels this is the spot! Vibe feels like I'm back there and I love how the place just smells like fresh bagels and kolaches in the morning yum!! 100/10 love it here. They never skimp on the cream cheeses/fillings. In the pic: Slovaceks Sausage Jalapeño: 10/10* Mini Kolaches Blueberry toasted bagel w/ honey walnut cream: 100/10 for the cream cheese ALONE! Coming back for that and taking it home w me. 2x lox bagels: love love love! Must try! Prices so affordable got me shook in this economy

Rosemary B.

Yelp
P here 1st time & now last time. Ordered 2 lox bagels to go. Sesame & poppy. Instead got plain & onion. In addition; these were the smallest/thinnest bagels I've ever had. For over $26, this should have been way better. You can get better lox bagels from Einsteins & they're cheaper. Huge disappointment & would not recommend.
google avatar

A G.

Yelp
Underwhelming! Got my usual everything bagel with plain cream cheese, toasted. Unusually long time to get your order. Barely toasted with a slab of cold cream cheese. Not the best texture - in some instances, bagels from central market may have better texture and flavor So far, Bagel Bob's NYTX on west side of toe is one of the best bagel places that I've tried in town. Go there instead of Hot Bagel Shop if it's not too much out of the way.
google avatar

Cassandra N.

Yelp
We made the trip out today and were not disappointed. The bagels were absolutely delicious! The service is fast and everyone was friendly. We will be back asap! amazing bagel shop
google avatar

Cynthia O.

Yelp
The lox poppy seed bagel (can choose from many bagels) toasted with choice of cream cheese spread, capers and thinly sliced tomatoes. Delicious and coffee is very good too. Reasonably priced. A Houston tradition you must try.
google avatar

Cynthia M.

Yelp
Don't get me wrong, this place was good but I think perhaps overhyped. I got the lox bagel and tried the mini bagel dogs. Good bagel and quick service despite the place being packed. Nothing mind-blowing though.
google avatar

Courtney C.

Yelp
Vibe- This was my first time at this bagel shop and it was PACKED! I can see it's a popular bagel shop in Houston. There's some seating available inside and there's two tables outside. Customer service- Good. Food/drinks- I got a cinnamon raisin bagel with honey walnut spread: it was yummy! Parking- Honestly the parking was stressful, it's a very tight space. If possible, I would park somewhere and walk over.
google avatar

Casey B.

Yelp
The jalapeño cheddar kolache is something I would come back for but their little weenies and bagels weren't all that impressive. Generally, a quick order turn around. The servers were absolutely wonderful, and the ambiance definitely carried mom-and-pop corner diner vibes which was a nice change from the usual hustle and bustle of Houston.
google avatar

Danni Y.

Yelp
Solid bagel with plenty of options and generous smear of cream cheese. Highly recommend the salmon lox bagel with chive cream cheese on an everything bagel The staff was also super nice, gave me recommendations even during a busy line. I also got the cinnamon honey butter on chocolate chip but wouldn't get it again, the butter melted too much sadly. The kolache dogs are decent. The inside is small and cute, nothing fancy with a few tables. Parking can get a little tricky and the line can be long so I would order online ahead of time.

Wes C.

Yelp
no Bueno. order all wrong. nice people, bagels not good. avoid this one. Coffee was decent. Bathrooms clean. Food, meh at best

Yelp
Visiting Houston and had a hankering for a bagel. Daughter recommended a place nearby, but alas, they did not have any fresh bagels. So she said try The Hot Bagel Shop which was just about 2 miles away. Now, do not be fooled, 2 miles in Houston traffic at 9 am is nothing to sneeze at. Anyway, made it there, however, the navigation did not take me directly there, made me turn on a street before it which did not have access to the small parking lot. No biggie, went around the block and entered from the right side of the street anyway. OK, I digress here. Cute, smallish place in a small strip center. Saw a few tables to sit and eat at. Kind of like an old timey, hole in the wall place. Smelled delightful upon entering and looked clean. Different from these fancy schmancy places all over Houston. There are large glass cases so you can see the bagels available. Also another glass case that housed the bagel dogs, bagel pizza (that looked absolutely delectable, and I may go back for) and mini bagel dogs. There was also offering of different flavored cream cheeses in different sizes. Sandwiches available there too I think, but was not going for that, so I didn't really study the menu. The staff was polite, quick and efficient. Whenever you cannot see what is going in the bag, one wonders if when you get home, it will be right. Feeling the bag on the way out, it was still warm, hence the name Hot Bagel Shop. I wanted to eat the thing right there in the parking lot, but was on a mission to bring home food for the family. I only ordered 4 bagels, everything, garlic, plain and blueberry. The everything and garlic were nicely covered with the toppings. Daughter enjoyed her plain bagel. They toasted up nice and had a good amount of chew, yet crisp. I grew up in the northeast (but got to Texas as quick as I could 45 yrs ago) so I like to think I know what a good bagel should taste like. I will definitely go back there during my visit here. $1.50 per bagel, $6 total. Not bad for what we got. Job well done!
google avatar

Daysi L.

Yelp
The shop is really cute in a nice neighborhood. You order at the counter and it's pretty quick. They have some stuff ready to go too. I got a bagel but it was honestly too chewy for me. I like softer bagels. I also didn't understand why it was only toasted on the outside? anyways yeah nah i won't come back for a bagel but maybe if i'm in the area ill get a lil kolache or some
google avatar

Kat M.

Yelp
Solid breakfast spot and I love the bagels! It can get really busy in the morning so prepare to wait or order ahead.
google avatar

Daniel W.

Yelp
This has to be one of the best bagel shops if not the best in town. I came here just right before the lunch rush. Parking can be a bit challenging as the lot in front does not have too many spaces. The menu may be overwhelming at first but there is a lot of customizable options for your bagel to choose from. I ended up ordering the smoked salmon sandwich with the everything bagel, tomatoes, red onions, capers, and the lox spread. The bagel had the right amount of texture to it, nice toast on the outside and pillowy on the inside. There was also a generous amount of lox spread applied to the sandwich. Highly recommend this place if you're looking for a good bagel to go.
google avatar

Keith T.

Yelp
I really like Smoke salmon bagel . it is very delicious to me, the taste is very special,Try it.

Yelp
I recently moved to another city from Houston and this was one place I wanted to try before I left. The hot bagel shop has online ordering which I highly recommend since I heard the lines are long and can be a wait. I got the fully loaded breakfast sandwich on an everything bagel. I went to go pick it up and it was ready as soon as I got there. The bagel is $12 but I will say it's worth it. The sandwich is indeed fully loaded and was hot and delicious. I also got a egg and cheese kolache which was also very great. When I'm in town again I will definitely visit. The only complaint I do have is that I wish they had more bagel flavors. Other than that, best bagel shop in Houston!!
google avatar

Megan N.

Yelp
Love the bagels here! Food is always fresh and delicious! The bagels are a little pricey, but you definitely get your money's worth in the size of the bagel and fillings! Service is friendly and helpful! You can order online or in person, but they're always busy so expect a wait! Definitely recommend checking them out!
google avatar

Rachel J.

Yelp
I ordered the recommended Everything Bagel with Chive Cream Cheese. Exactly what I expected - Delicious. A generous amount of cream cheese if you're into that.
google avatar

William M.

Yelp
The best bagel shop hands down in Houston. The service is always on point. Place is not big so be ready to wait a little but it's so worth it! They are pretty fast getting orders out! Highly recommend it !

Ashundra C.

Yelp
Tried this bagel shop this morning as I was craving bacon! Walked in and it smelled so good. I ordered a reg breakfast bagel with everything bagel, egg, bacon, cheese and added avocado. Yummy and filling. Just wish I had added cream cheese too

Abigayle M.

Yelp
This place is amazing! This is my second time being here and it doesn't disappoint! The first time I came I got a poppy seed bagel with blue try cream cheese. Let me tell you, it was so smooth and creamy that I didn't want it to leave my mouth. Today I got an everything bagel for my veggie sandwich with plain cream cheese and that was a big sandwich. The avocado was so yummy. The workers are so nice and try to help you decide what you're looking for. I will say watch out for the coffee, it's very hot but who's complaining lol! This shop is so cute, there's not a lot of tables but they're never full. This is more of take out bagel shop, so there's always a table.

Noel H.

Yelp
Tried this place one morning since it was closer than my preferred bagel spot. It was quite busy but they had what seemed to be an efficient operation. My only complaint is they did not make my sandwich the way I asked and left off something I paid extra for. Didn't notice until I got home and I wasn't gonna go back for that. Was still a delicious sandwich nonetheless.

Gordon S.

Yelp
The regular bagels are great... I love the banana walnut & the cinnamon apple... But I can't leave the place without getting the mini-dogs and jalapeno sausage bagels... They have a great selection and will fix them just about anyway ypu would want them

Yelp
Stopped in on a Saturday morning for breakfast. The parking lot was pretty tight but luckily we found a spot. Inside the restaurant, you could order your bagel and sit down at a table. I ordered the fully loaded breakfast sandwich with Turkey bacon and my dad got a couple of bagel kolaches and a black coffee. The sandwich was delicious and definitely loaded, I could only eat half of it. The kolaches were generously filled and my dad really enjoyed them, he also said the coffee was good and strong Can't wait to go back and try other bagels, high quality and yummy. Thanks!

Mia B.

Yelp
New York native here. Trash bagel poor service as well, this bagel spot use to be decent. If you want a decent bagel go to lazy bagel or if you're in the woodlands try Fuhgedaboudit Bagel.
google avatar

Yelp
I had a very intense craving for a bagel and this place is close to my home. I got the breakfast bagel sandwich. It was alright. The bagel was decent but honestly, tasted like something I'd get at the grocery store. Maybe I'm spoiled by my many years of life in NJ/NY. The eggs had a nice texture but were very bland (didn't even taste salted). The avocado got all gross and mushy because it was added on top of the hot layers (I'd recommend placing it with the cream cheese/tomatoes/onions layer). The whole bagel sandwich was just kind of bland and unwieldy (kept falling apart). I'd say that their bagel kolaches are superior to their bagels. They were sold out of the egg/sausage/cheese so I got the egg/cheese. The bagel exterior had a nice texture as did the eggs. However, just like the bagel sandwich, the eggs were bland and flavorless. I'd guess that the egg/sausage/cheese is a better choice but they really should season their eggs so they could stand alone.
google avatar

Yelp
Bagels always fresh, service always professional and the ambiance is comfirtable. Very hommy

Vanessa M.

Yelp
I had the egg , cheese & bacon, it was so dry in that bagel plus the bagel was hard sitting underneath the light warmer

Yelp
The lox wasn't lox'n.... Staff wouldn't allow me to place order over the phone and their online order system wasn't user friendly. Hot Bagel was once elite -- not anymore.
