"Particularly well-equipped with a round-the-clock gym and in-room work spaces for business travelers, the downtown location (close to PSU and the big weekend farmers market), generously sized rooms, and plentiful outdoor spaces make this a great home-base for Portland first-timers and families. Staying true to its mid-century roots, the modern décor is consistent throughout the hotel’s communal areas—the games room, complete with pool table and big-screen, is a hit with guests of all ages. Local chef David Machado’s wood-fired pizza-centric restaurant is set up right inside the hotel and is beloved by locals and visitors alike—high praise considering Portland’s tremendous food scene."

Dear Reader: when we first arrived at the hotel, we weren’t impressed with the position in town — it didn’t quite match our expectations and we questioned our choice. But as we settled in, things started to shift. The location turned out to be ideal, the room was clean and comfortable and the on-site facilities were much better than we’d ever anticipated. Rose was very knowledgeable at the front desk, the restaurant served up great food, the complimentary breakfast was generous and well done. I have read reviews with complaints - what is there to complain about when it is offered complimentary as a starter for your day? Order something from the extras if you want more!||The air conditioning may be a little noisy but on low speed you can hardly hear it and well, lets face it where can you get a comfy bed? Well here you can - and if my wife is to complain it's always about how hard the bed is, the pillows aren't right and no sleep in most every hotel... the bed and bedding was terrific for us both and very comfy.||Little touches like the kids area, free hire of equipment, complimentary S’mores by the firepit and the relaxed happy hour added a real sense of charm. I mean free pinball? C'mon - I have never seen a hotel offer so much!||What really changed everything, though, was the painting event hosted by Srhawn on Saturday. It wasn’t just an activity — it created a real atmosphere of fun, creativity and community. By the end of our stay, what started as a questionable choice had completely transformed into one of our most memorable and enjoyable getaways...BTW we had already been on the road 5 weeks! Thank you Srhawn and the team at Hotel Zags.||It seems everyone wants a complaint these days so here is ours - the only downside to our stay was having to leave — everything was so comfortable, welcoming and well thought-out that we genuinely didn’t want our stay to end.

I recently had an outstanding experience at Hotel Zags, and it deserves every bit of a five-star review! The outdoor seating areas with cozy fire places created a perfect ambiance for relaxation, and I absolutely loved how dog-friendly the hotel was. They even provided treats for our furry friend, which was a delightful touch. The overall atmosphere was welcoming and comfortable, making my stay truly memorable. I highly recommend Hotel Zags to anyone looking for a pet-friendly place with inviting outdoor spaces. Can't wait to visit again!

The staff was so nice, professional and helpful. The restaurant had great food. The morning free breakfast was very small. For the quality of the hotel I was expecting something more. I felt safe. The parking garage was secure. And you needed a room card to use the elevator to access the rooms. Lu'kus at front desk was an exceptional staff member. After a rough trip it was so nice to see such a bright light.

I come to Portland quite often for work. They have a good business rate through my work and I appreciate the level of service they provide. They have a simple breakfast in the morning that’s easy for me to take into the office. My most recent visit I had the pleasure of meeting Lyle, I loved his fun hair! I also got to meet Josie, Teagan and Trey! Such a great team of staff they have! Hope they stay!

Google
Positive: Great aesthetics, great location (close proximity to downtown), loved that it is so dog friendly. The gentleman at the front desk was friendly, helpful, courteous (please forgive us, but we didn't know what their pronouns were - he was phenomenal). Negative: My mother said the room smelled like dog, but we were on a dog-free floor (I didn't mind). Also, she had a horrible experience with a follow up call with a woman at the hotel on 5/20/25, who hung up on her abruptly. Not the best customer service.

It was such an amazing experience, there were so many helpful staff members! Especially Rose!! She was so fun and helps us out with SO MUCH on top of being super kind! She made the whole experience so much easier, helping us learn more about the city and ensuring we were safe and having an amazing time exploring! Would definitely come again!

I hate to say it but this Hotel was at BEST a 1-Star experience for me. From the moment I checked in, the problems started. My room reeked of mildew, the windows didn’t open (apparently most of their rooms have this issue), and there was absolutely no way to control the temperature. I barely slept the first night because of the stuffy, stagnant air. When I raised this with the front desk, I learned this wasn’t a one-off — they know which rooms have these problems, but they still put guests there by default unless you specifically ask otherwise. There’s no mention of this in their advertising, so unless you’re psychic, you’re stuck. The so-called amenities were a joke. We were charged $70 ($35/night) in amenity fees, but for what? It didn’t cover parking, the mini fridge in both of our rooms was broken, the bedside outlets did not work, and despite advertising a gym, there is no gym on site.. From what I can tell there are some items that people can rent that are locked up in a cage at the entrance but the staff never tried to explain what amenities were available at all. I specifically asked what the amenity fee covered and the person checking us in said verbatim “the amenity fee allows you access to our amenities” …. No further clarification. The check-in staff were awkward and unhelpful — except for one kind front desk employee who at least tried to move us to a better room after that miserable first night. She was the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal stay. Overall, Hotel Zags was an overpriced, misleading, uncomfortable disaster. I will very likely not be staying here again, and I would strongly advise anyone considering it to look elsewhere. There are far better, more honest, and more comfortable options in Portland.

Google
The experience was overall very good. It’s definitely aim toward a more male audience, but the outdoor seating, the breakfast, the rentals, and the view were all pretty wonderful. We had some crappy neighbors who were banging on our walls because we were talking at 9 o’clock at night, but that’s not the hotel‘s fault.

Yelp
Place is really clean, staff are friendly. They have a big restaurant with limited hours and free brekkie. The breakfast consists of bagels and pastries, but it beats nothing. There is a rec room with a huge tv and lots of games. Microwave and silverware on our floor. Room had a mini fridge. They really make it liveable for the guests. There is also gated and secured parking underground. Only $40 self parking- which in Portland, secured parking is a must. We had an issue with the water pressure in the shower but it didn't last. Would definitely recommend.

Yelp
Just wanted to give a quick shoutout to this hotel. This was a recommendation from a friend and Im so glad I chose this place. I love the vibes and decor here. The sad part was that we didn't really get to hang out at the hotel at all since our schedule was so busy. But they have an cool outdoor area where you can hang out and I also think there is a restaurant here too. The room we had was clean and spacious. The shower was pretty big. I was actually shocked by how big it was. Tall people will appreciate it for sure. Beds for once didn't mess my back up. Usually when I travel, this is a reoccurring theme. But I had no issues sleeping here. If you are thinking of a nice and cozy place in Portland, this is the place.

Yelp
Came to Portland for the weekend and stayed at Hotel Zags. The workers were all so sweet and always greeted us. It's located walking distance to a good amount of restaurants and spots. The rooms are a good size and really clean. The showers had a shampoo, conditioner, and body wash dispenser. We had a TV and mini fridge in the room. There was a microwave outside our room in the halls. The hotel had a smores hour starting from 7pm which I loved! They provide marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate which you can roast outside in their patio firepits. They also had a game room with a pool table, darts, sack toss, tic tac toe, and connect 4. The game room is open 24/7 and you can access it with your key card if it's late. They offered breakfast which had cereal, fruits, yogurt, muffins, and bagels. They have a cage with different items that you can rent out! They had bikes, boards, and even a guitar. Heads up they do not clean your room every day unless you request for it to be cleaned. They clean it on the 3rd day. We had to ask for our room to be cleaned, but the bed didn't get made. They just cleared out our dirty towels and gave us new ones. Overall, I very much enjoyed my stay here and all the amenities they provided!

Yelp
Decent little spot downtown. Work trip, so the stay was chosen for us. Pros: downtown location, affordable small and clean rooms, on site parking ($39/nt), sweet courtyard gathering area (good weather only, haha). Employees helpful, kind. Free use/rental of equipment like cornhole, wii games, balls, fishing rods, etc). Cons: daily resort fee (addl $25/nt with $15 of it a credit to restaurant), game room games all in need of repair/maintenance (pool cues all missing tips, dart board issues, connect four broken) otherwise could be a cool gathering area with the necessary attention. No on site pool/hot tub (voucher to use nearby 24 hr fitness) Probably won't be back since there are so many other options in the area. We enjoyed our stay that work booked for us, but prefer having status and consistency of amenities, benefits, facilities, and service of Hyatt and Hilton.

Yelp
The hotel rooms are small and uncomfortable, and they all smell like smoke. I was switched from one room because of the smell to find the other smelt the exact same. The staff are horribly rude, except for Teagan. She helped me but no one else did and it wasn't till I talked to her that somebody helped me. This is a terrible hotel and I would never go here not even if my house was on fire. I recommend staying somewhere else. Heck, even a motel six would be better than this place. unbelievably expensive for a crappy hotel. And they try to make it look cool with the furniture, but it still doesn't change the fact that it's an old hotel ready to fall.

Yelp
Location is good but the room was small we had king with city view. Room smelled which wasn't pleasant and the shower made noises on and off all night. There was mold in the shower so obviously it doesn't get cleaned, the paint was peeling on the ceiling in the bathroom, and the air filter hadn't been changed in a very long time. They offer free breakfast which was a joke it was bagels, hard boiled eggs, instant oatmeal or cereal thank goodness Starbucks is close by. Parking is not the best. Hotel needs some good cleaning for sure.

Yelp
5 stars for aesthetics, amenities, and service. Extremely convenient location given that the hotel is walking distance to the waterfront or park blocks and right off multiple lines of public transportation. Between the cost, the availability of lounge areas outside (the s'mores touch is chef's kiss), the decor and size of the rooms, and the game room, I have zero notes. I am going to stay here again the next time I'm in Portland and will be telling any friend who is planning a trip to PDX to stay here as well. Also, Armando (at the front desk) went above and beyond to make us feel warm and welcome. Despite coming in late for check-in after a long day on the road, through amazing service and with a great smile and sense of humor made us feel so at ease. He is a big reason why our stay was so amazing. Cannot recommend him and this place enough.

Yelp
I stayed at The Hotel Zags for a one night stay while I was in town for a quick work event. Nicely located, close to downtown and lots of restaurants, bars, and shopping (driving distance). When we first pulled up I was a little confused - the outside definitely doesn't match the inside. Let's just say it needs a bit of a facelift. When we walked into the lobby though, I was pleasantly surprised (and relieved). Front staff was super nice during the duration of our stay. Loved the outdoor patio right off of the lobby; it was HUGE and had several large fire tables. We definitely enjoyed an hour or so by the fire before turning in to bed, which was really nice! We had a King City View room. It was nice, definitely suitable for one evening. The bed was comfy and the room was really clean. The only things I wish were different: the bathroom door is a slider, and it didn't close all the way - so if you're staying with someone, make sure you're super comfy with them! The other downside was that there was no microwave in our room, but there was a mini fridge. We had leftovers from dinner that we wanted to heat up but, weren't able to do so.... There was an obvious space where it looked like a microwave used to be, so not sure why they took it away. Bummer. All in all, it was a good stay for a work trip and I'd stay here again.

Yelp
Save yourself the trouble and book somewhere else. There are so many hotels out there, why risk it? I am not sure how this hotel can be a 4 star. the Bathroom calking was so dirty that looked like mildew. The breakfast is the cheapest you can imagine and is very limited in variety. They will promise you a price on the phone, and even if all that is on recorded line, they will dispute and add additional charges, such as Parking that was promised and confirmed to be included in the price. some of their front desk clerks are extremely rude. Every time you ask for a manager, the manager is not there and is not available by phone either.

Yelp
I haven't even stayed at this hotel, and I'm already regretting my choice booking here. When I called with some questions, the representative was shockingly impolite. She abruptly ended the call without any warning, which is simply unacceptable. If this is how they treat potential guests, I dread to think how they'd handle actual customers.

Yelp
Pros: Convenient location. Right in the downtown. Friendly staff. Clean rooms. Nice outdoor patio with fireplace. Fun to hangout. Cons: Hidden resort fee. They never mention it during check in or check out. And then charge it to our card. Also, do not have any resort amenities. And definitely did not mention the little hidden amenities they have during our stay. No free parking. $28 per day to park. Very small rooms and restrooms. No complimentary breakfast. No direct public transportation from the airport.

Yelp
Poor customer service. Super unfriendly and unaccommodating. I would expect a lot BETTER of them since they are in the hospitality business. I booked through a 3rd party, & when I got sick I had to reschedule, and the 3rd party tried to help me book a new date and the hotel said NO. Like WTF??? How is the 3rd party business much nicer and accommodating than the hotel itself? I'm not trying to cancel and get my money back I just wanted to move my reservation. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE. I would 100% take your business elsewhere because this hotel is not hospitable whatsoever. So disappointed. Thumbs down.

Yelp
We stayed 4 days and 4 nights. Never received any room service. We turned on the light and we went to the front counter twice, and they said they were inputting it in the system. I'm reading the reviews that you get $5 discount if you decline service; however, we never declined and didn't receive the $5 discoun.

Yelp
I loved staying here and would do so again. I had a nice room with a king bed and a big window. The bed was very comfortable, the place was clean, and the staff were very nice. Some of the amenities are things that I would never use, like a whole room filled with fishing rods, bike helmets, various sportsballs, and skateboards that you can borrow. I went there for a concert at the Keller auditorium and it was a perfect place to stay. Only two or three blocks from the venue. It's also two or three blocks from a lot of good restaurants, including a sushi place that I loved (Murata). I like the big open patio area next to the restaurant. I didn't try the food but I did get a drink. That was pretty good.

Yelp
very stylish hotel. beautiful interior, nice to be there. very friendly staff. we stayed one night, the beds were so comfortable we had a very good sleep. The location of the hotel is also very convenient, close to the center.

Yelp
Ok ok - we ended up here only because our original hotel was oversold. The front desk experience was crazy. A long line of people, one agent, no sense of urgency - a goat rodeo through and through. The place is nice and new looking but the girl behind the desk seem like a transplant from the Best Western down by the river. Bar and bar staff were great but the next day we couldn't zig zag our way out fast enough.

Yelp
I stayed At Hotel Zags Thanksgiving weekend from Sat thru Mon. I booked it through Super Value which seemed to have the cheapest rate because it Was Nonrefundable. I saw that they had a $27 Resort Fee per day. I looked at Maxwell Hotel too but they also had a Resort Fee. This was the very first Time that I heard of a PDX Hotel charging such fees. First I emailed ahead asking if they had Microwaves and any extra charge. When I called the day I was to check in, they said they can allocate a Room. I wanted to get up to the Japanese Gardens after Lunch in Chinatown since it looked like the weather won't rain. But when I was on the phone about details of getting microwave, She Said No I can't get one in my Room and it Would Be at a higher priced room. Basically, Whomever Gave me the info about getting a free Microwave in my Room lied or was not trained about Good Cust. Service. I did not fight the Front desk when I got there but maybe I should of pulled up my email from them. They do have a microwave at the desk. So You have to ask for them to warm your food. So I went up maybe 3 times for them to heat my food. They were not that thrilled it seemed to do this extra duty. One young 20 Something was Coloring some drawings during her Down time. I guess management allowed it? But I thought it was odd. Most hotels don't allow staff to do crafts or color while they are Working. I did not say anything to her about it. But Expect to See Her do It during her shift. T I also misunderstood about how much Food credit they give back to use their restaurant. They gave me two $5 coupons maybe since my friend walked in. He was to join me for dinner anyways but not stay overnight as a Guest. Then they gave me a $15 Credit for any soda, Tea, Juice, Candy or snack I wanted at they Gift shop snack corner. You can use the $15 for a wine or a cap too. So I thought it was $25 Food, Snack credit back per day. But No They Said it's Per Stay. I misread their policies when I booked two nights. I give 5 stars for the Mushroom Flatbread and the Fries I tasted that my friend got with his Burger. He really like his tasty Burger. On the Receipt was another $5 off coupon which I thought I could use Sun. Later I asked if the restaurant would be open on Sun and Mon. I was given the wrong info and found the Restaurant Closed all day on Sun and Mon. Basically If you stay Sun night for one night, You Could Not use this $5 Credit anyways since the restaurant is Closed! Maybe they give you a $20 Credit for the Over priced Snacks? I also had to move room after getting a Top Floor supposed quiet room. Sat Night was Pretty Quiet of Traffic or Busses. The next Min. Morning during Rush hr was noisy. I was facing this Ofc Bldg. and asked not to get a noisy street noise room. I heard the Busses Fart starting at 5 am. Late Sun Night, there is a Luggage Cart my neighbor used sitting in the middle of the Hall blocking the whole hall from me getting to my room. I moved it myself. How irresponsible I thought. They did not return it back to the Lobby and There are no bellboys there too to really get it. Anyways, at my new Room, the front desk places this really Noisy couple. This was after I asked to move to another quiet room. I have no idea why the desk did that when there were many Open Rooms in the hotel. Maybe so the Rm Maid don't have to go far? . I awoke at 4:30 am hearing this Couple Laughing and Talking til 8 am or so before they got a phone call about my Complaint I did on Facebook Messaging. They checked out within an hour or moved. I was able to sleep in quiet a few hrs. Check out Time is Noon. If you stay more than 5 mins longer , The Room Maid is instructed to Knock on your Door to check if you are ready to check out. They don't wait to disturb you if you are just 7 mins late! I will not stat here again because of the Poor Customer Service I received that was inconsistent. Plus I don't like paying extra Resort fees too except in Vegas when the Room Rates are cheaper and they have a Pool or offer Comps.

Yelp
Stayed at The Hotel Zags and loved its trendy vibe and fun game room. The place has a cool, unique atmosphere. However, the rooms are a bit small, so I'm rating it 4 stars.

Yelp
This place is disgusting. Room smelled of mold, sinks didn't drain, homeless sleeping on the front bench.

Lisa B.

Yelp
DO NOT stay here. There are other hotels in the area that cost the same, which will offer much better service. I regret booking this place. 1.) The wifi is spotty and unreliable. This is a huge problem if you need to get work done. 2.) Toilet flush wouldn't work, we had to manually fix it to get the water running every time. 3.) It's the middle of winter but the room was so hot and humid even with the window open, it's uncomfortable to sleep. The AC doesn't work but is extremely loud. 4.) Room was TINY, which normally wouldn't be a problem, but for the price I'm paying I expected a lot better. I will most definitely not be coming back here. I had a far better experience at the Duniway during past visits.

Marcus A.

Yelp
This is just one more hotel that charges a new super-scammy fee. I went to book, and the website said it would cost a bit over $500 for my stay. Then, all of a sudden on the checkout page, the cost is over $700!! They say it's for "taxes and fees" (which they don't mention earlier in the process). Then when you go searching for the information (which isn't on the checkout page) it turns out they're charging this scam $25 a night fee. So they just straight up lie about the cost of the room when you search for it, and the cost is actually 40% higher than they say it is. What a terrible business.

Yelp
We stayed here in April, it's perfectly located in the downtown/college area. It was cute and clean, a bonus that they rent out a bunch of recreational items such as bikes, boards etc. The Boba place around the corner is delicious- enjoy it in the outdoor dining area. The only bad part was that we booked for a garden view and ended up getting a view of the building across the street.

Katie G.

Yelp
Lobby ambiance and check in staff are great, but I won't stay here again. I've been to this hotel several times, back when it was Hotel Modera, because my company uses it as our home base in Portland. The new management / ownership is slippery, though, and I won't be back because I don't like how they do business. I booked online directly through the website with a "Portland parking" package, 2 night stay. I don't like using third parties because the fees and policies are misleading and I don't want to deal with that. Price was $312 on my invoice including parking. The night before I'm checking in, I get an email advertising $99 / night room rate for the nights I'm staying. I call first thing the next morning and ask for a price adjustment, but they say they can't do it. They offer not to charge me for a $35 "amenity fee," that I had no idea I'd be paying because it wasn't on the invoice, but ok, I'll take it. Sadly, that's not where this ends. When they removed the fee, they sent me a new invoice where they added an additional $60 parking fee that changed my cost to $372. So then I had to call back to have that charge removed, which eventually happened but not without negotiation, escalation and a long time on hold. We finally got here, and the check in process included paying up front a $35 / night amenity fee, *which remember they were going to comp me* and they said they'll refund at check out, but their system wouldn't allow to be removed prior to checkout. The company has a structural integrity problem, literally and figuratively. The invoice should be clear about pricing and without error. If it's not, I expect the company to compensate for my troubles. The last thing, and it's minor but notable because of all of the billing messiness, was that there's some false advertising in the room photos. We selected and paid for a 'City View' room and our room has a view of the hotel parking lot. The bathroom in our room doesn't match the photos of the 'City View' bathrooms listed on the website, and in fact the tub is dingy and outdated (the website photo is a stand up walk in shower with a glass barrier). Like I said, I've stayed here before and never had this style bathroom. The hotel is empty (I mean they are running a $99 / night promo to get people here). There's a big lobby, patio and garage, and there were less than ten cars and I haven't seen a single other person in the hotel since we got here. They could have upgraded our room, not even to a suite, just a room that had the upgrades shown in the pictures on the website, with a decent view and bathroom but they didn't. I did some sleuthing on the website and saw they charge a variable amenity fee rate and variable parking fee. The website says they have a 24 hour cancellation policy, the person on the phone said it was 72. The vibe here is purposefully deceptive and no one has apologized, taken responsibility or acknowledged the way negative this experience has unfolded. I prefer to patronize more local businesses because I want our communities to do well, but we'll stay at Marriott next time. At least you know what you're going to get there. The Hotel Zags isn't it.

Yelp
Very modern and clean! Close to the 5th and Market streetcar stop. Lots of amenities to enjoy - $15 gift shop voucher, $5 off voucher per stay to redeem at hotel restaurant and rental of bikes, skateboards, etc. Restaurant service was excellent. Very competent, friendly, and pleasant. I stayed during Rose Festival hence good amount of foot traffic. Nice place to stay.

Yelp
We arrived early and waited 40 minutes to talk to someone because they only had one person at the desk. The couple ahead of us was asking about the fees. There's an added amenity fee daily per person at check in for what? For a courtyard? No pool, spa, sauna, and I got violently I'll from the food at the restaurant. Not only was my water glass filthy, but the pizza was insanely sweet and the bbq ribs had been precooked and looked like two weeks old. The ribs were the most vile. I tried to give it a chance thinking it was just different here. The smell, the look(completely dried out and has a silvery glisten). I took one bite and my stomach was in knots. Not only this but the room was tiny. Like nowhere to put any of your items. And the air con didn't work. Even with it being 45 degrees outside(the tiny & only window that opens) and using no covers, we woke up sweaty. And we're from San Diego. It's like 70 degrees back home and I've never felt so uncomfortable as I was staying here. We checked out in the morning hoping to salvage our trip. They didn't charge for the rest of the stay but the GM did call and tell us they were refunding our night. I feel bad for anyone working there as a former hospitality employee, I know that so much was beyond their control. Book at the Hoxton instead. It was clean, quiet, convenient, not in the best area but again I'm used to the homeless population l, so it didn't bother me. The staff is great and they let you check out as late as 4pm with a $10/hour fee.

Yelp
Not a fan. I think they spend more time trying to brand the hotel as "cool" rather than offering a normal hotel experience. My room was incredibly small and had no closet doors (by design). If it doesn't have doors is it even a closet? The drawers were extremely small and essentially on the floor. One lamp didn't work and offered no phone charging on that side of the bed. The hotel has what it calls a "gaming room" in lieu of a business center (it does have two Macs against a wall). The table in the lobby swings which prevents any attempt to work on a laptop. I don't know who this hotel is for.

Yelp
Stayed in Feb 2024 for 2 nights. Loved the cute boutique feel. I got in really late and the front desk was friendly and efficient. The room was clean but the cold water in the sink didn't work, only the hot side. The shower had good pressure and plenty of hot water. The air con fan worked but it didn't cool. So although chilly outside, I could only stand the window open to cool off the room for a little while due to street noise so had to close it to sleep that night. It was hot and uncomfortable to sleep. Bed was OK. Pillows were kinda strange. Told the front desk the next morning but those things (sink and air con) weren't attended to by the 2nd night by the time I got back from working late. On the evening of the 2nd night, went down for drinks and a bite to eat at the restaurant there at 8:25 PM. They had already closed (!!) but were supposed to be open until 9PM. The front desk didn't have any comment when I complained that they had closed 30 min early. Ignoring my complaint, he just directed me to walk down to the Marriott a couple of blocks away. Very disappointing. I stayed at the Zags as it was close to where I was working and they had a restaurant and bar there. I wish it were a better experience. I wanted to like this hotel more.

Yelp
Nice room and hotel. Great location too. Visiting Portland for my son's summer baseball league playoffs. Hotel staff were amazing with flexibility as we initially asked to stay an extra night then ended up asking to leave a day earlier. Ireland and Naydis made our trip! We will definitely stay anytime we're in Portland. Thank you!

Yelp
What a breath of fresh air. They loan out really nice bikes and skateboards for free. At check-in, you spin a wheel of fortune for prizes. The room was modern and tasteful, quiet and comfortable. Gated underground parking. Jeanine at the front desk kept track of the details and took good care of us, saving a trip back to the room after our keys had expired.

Yelp
We came here for a staycation as we won't be able to do much for a little while. The staff were very friendly and the lobby is beautiful. It's the holiday season so there was a little extra going on. There are different sitting areas both inside and out if you want to hang and they even offer some stuff you can use for free (indoor and outdoor games, etc). They do have a secured parking garage underneath for a fee and a restaurant just off the lobby. The room itself was very nice - updated and clean. They have a coffee station and mini fridge (although a microwave would be nice too). Their prices for the mini bar were reasonable. We had a beautiful view that was so nice we kept the curtains open at night. The room and bed were comfortable, it was definitely a current TV as we were able to connect to watch our own programming. The entire place, including hallways was clean and it was nice and quiet. We were very glad we made the decision to stay here.

Yelp
High praise for the Hotel Zags! Local Portlander here booked a staycation when it was HOT and my apartment had no AC. Had a great visit, it was so comfortable and the room felt high quality, and I can't not rave about the customer service of the front desk people, really took care of us. They are pet friendly, I've never brought my cats to a hotel before happy to report it was painless here! They have parking available, I think usually for purchase, depending on your deal booked. The Hotel Zags is really in the heart of downtown, walking or biking distance from everything. AND they have bike rentals, I thought that was so cool, among other things, can confirm Nintendo switches available! And I have since recommended this hotel to family visiting, only happy campers so far!

Yelp
So overall I enjoyed this hotel. It's a quaint cozy modern style place. I missed out on a $15 daily food amenity credit, which I didn't know about when I checked in. So that was a bummer. There's also a guest amenity daily fee and some pretty painful taxes by the Oregon and Portland tax boards. So prepare yourself to pay any wears from 80 to $150 depending on like the stay. As you can see their rooms are well acquainted and the beds were pretty comfortable. The shower is also had very good flow on the nozzle. If you stay here, I need to warn you to not stay in an odd numbered room that faces the 5th Street area. There is an ungodly amount of street noise due to the buses that seem to constantly run up the hill. So you get the bus noise and you get the noise of them accelerating up the hill. That also goes for a fair amount of big ass trucks that are going up and revving their engines. So if you value quiet sleep make sure you're facing the other street and in an even number room.

Yelp
Lovely boutique hotel! Nice rooms, well kept. Great facilities, including meeting and party spaces. Highly recommend

Yelp
It's not a busy hotel but it's in the middle of downtown so we thought it would be convenient anyway, especially since we're here for business for week. So first of all, they charge you for the entirety of the whole stay INCLUDING the authorization fee ($80 per day) upon check-in. Only when you get out do they give you the authorization fee REFUNDED. And when we were kind of inquiring why, the front desk person made us feel like we were crazy in assuming that we didn't have to pay up front for the entire trip. So we decided to pay for 3 nights instead and see how it went then just have them add more days if this was just an off interaction/first impression. We get to the room and there isn't a lock on the bathroom door, there isn't a TV with streaming service (literally just cable, you don't even have an option of screen mirroring if you wanted to from your phone/laptop), nothing/no shelving in the fridge, the closet isn't accessible unless you close the bathroom door completely. Also, one of the nights around 9pm I went to the front desk with two t shirts that needed to be washed by noon the next day, if possible. The guy at the front desk, Spencer, told me to come back at 8am the following day and it should be ready by noon. So I did that, and at 8am there was a different person at the desk. And when I asked him for them to be washed and when I needed them ready, he shakes his head and said that it's not possible since dry cleaning is outsourced and won't be ready until a day after.... Which is fine if Spencer had told me that, I would've just gone over to a laundromat. And then we didn't have our shirts for work soooo... The hotel restaurant that is only open Tuesday-Saturday from 4pm-9pm doesn't offer room service either. So the times that ANY guest would want the convenience of their hotel to have food or drink -- you're shit outta luck :-) Anyway, we decided to checkout on Friday morning instead of Tuesday morning and just go to a different hotel for the remainder of the trip. Train your employees better and maybe look into at least ONE amenity for your guests?

Yelp
The entire facility was very nice and clean. The rooms were spacious and the beds were very comfortable. They had a game room with pool and other games. A unique thing about this hotel is that they don't have a fitness room. Instead they give complimentary day passes to 24 hour fitness which is awsome. Way better then whatever fitness center they could provide.

Yelp
I booked a stay in Zags for the week of July 4th, whimsically, somewhat last-minute, because I wanted to see what it would be like to live there, in some real estate I was touring nearby. I thought the experience of staying there was fairly respectable and high-end, except for a few minor details, most notably: no pool or hot tub, (though there is a fountain you can swim in nearby), and also the showerhead had hard CLR buildup, and low-pressure. That was one of few things I had better at home! Outfitting the bathrooms with new, $40 showerheads would make a huge difference. The hotel restaurant is good. There's a great courtyard for hanging out, and cool, recently remodeled common spaces on the first floor. The front desk honor bar is handy for midnight snacks, and they give you a credit. I used most of mine to get a souvenir hat, and bought my groceries at the nearby CVS. My room had a fridge and a safe. The room also had a big TV and cable, but I barely used it, other than to watch my favorite current weekly shows. There's all kinds of cool stuff in walking distance, and the hotel sits on several mass transit lines. There's also a loaner 'gear shed' full of bikes, fishing poles, and even a Nintendo Wii, none of which I never actually utilized, but nice to have, should anything in there strike your fancy. There were some protests downtown during my stay, but I slept through them, far enough south from all the fracas. They mentioned I could use the 24-hour fitness nearby, but I never did, because I was burning so many calories from walking everywhere, in Portland's temperate climate. The room was respectably decorated and outfitted, and they gave me one with a great view of Portland's hillside homes. All-in-all: a recommend, for the price. Worth the small amount extra, if only to avoid having to say 'I'm staying at Econo-suites.' Not that I was trying to impress anyone in particular. Might want to bring your own showerhead. So I'll give it a solid four stars.

Yelp
While I have my complaints, the service is not the detracting factor. It's the invoicing and fees. Zags was clean and very modern. I enjoyed my stay, and it's in a relatively nice part of downtown. Customer service was awesome, and the front desk is really friendly. However, hidden fees got me. I had to front a $320 incidentals hold on my card upon check-in. I had to shuffle some things around in order to meet this fee. I'm supposedly getting back this amount soon, but I'll make a call if not. This was very inconvenient, to say the least. Parking - yes, quite expensive. $28 a night is too much... however, it's either that, or park your car in the streets of downtown Portland, which many will state is not a good idea. I'd rather pay that than risk my rental car getting stolen. The best thing about the hotel is the per night rate, which was fairly cheap (about $85 a night). But given the other fees, just pay for a Marriott or a Holiday Inn, which will probably cost more per night, but break even at resort fees, parking, etc. I would be careful about spending your money here, but aside from the finances, this was a clean, upscale, and modern hotel with a lot of perks and amenities for guests.

Yelp
I found this hotel to be on the expensive side. After paying for the room, which the price was reasonable, online, there were surprises on check in. There was an amenities fee and an expensive parking fee. That added $57 to the room for one night. The room had a few problems. The door slammed loudly if you did not hold it when closing it. The cable tv was iffy. Sometimes you would get no sound and have to re-start it to make it work. The phone in the room had a broken hand piece so to call the desk you had to use the speaker. The heating system would make loud bumps like the door was closing every time it turned on and off. I am not even sure it worked because i put the setting up to 78 and the room stayed cool to cold. In addition there were 2 elevators and only one I have one other issue in that I requested a city view and the clerk who checked me in said I had one, I got in the room and my view was of the office building across the street. I guess that would be a city view compared to the garden view or courtyard view. But not what I expected. I stayed one night so it was not a big deal, The hotel was clean.the room was clean as well. The perks from the hotel, the $15 for their snack shop, the discount on the restaurant food, a day pass to 24 hour fitness, made it a decent deal even after the surprise fees. There was also a prize wheel I spun at check in which gave me a free drink at the restaurant. The Hotel Zags was just renovated 2 years ago so I was surprised that there were issues in the room. Despite the problems which were minor individually, the hotel was ok. It is not a dive or flea bag hotel, but it isn't a Sheraton or Hilton either. Expect to pay more when you check in. Expect a few minor problems in the room. Expect a clean hotel and room, friendly staff and decent food. Also don't expect a view as it is not a high rise. It is set up like a motel. Set your expectations as such and you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Hello, friends, Still at zero stars. Neither I nor my wife have been contacted by the management or property of this hotel. When we left, they told us that they would contact us before 3 p.m. that day. And to improve the situation, I have a charge on my card of $57. There is no explanation, we do not buy/use anything in the hotel or in the room. We don't even use the $15 in the gift shop credit. Stay away, far away from this place.

Yelp
pros: comfy bed, nice courtyard area cons: definitely some unfriendly staff, poor customer service ranging from incorrect billing to horrible interactions for simple requests, linens were dirty when we arrived, the rooms were pretty outdated and didn't have smart tvs, the wifi went in and out for me. When I tried to work in the lounge, a staff person seemed agitated when I asked if he could turn down the TV- he was blasting a baseball game. The restaurant is REALLY understaffed, hard to navigate, and once the front desk sent me to get something from the restaurant and the server I spoke to was so annoyed. Overall, I would definitely not book this hotel again because the value is not great and the staff are not very hospitable to people like me.

Yelp
Short staffed... cant even make a reservation they are so understaffed... waited for 15 minutes to make a reservation and they couldnt even book my room and conference room.. until they are staffed up cant even have a business meeting... sad..

Yelp
We stayed here for 2 nights. I definitely loved the vibe of the place, amenities and that they offered us a lot of free bottles of water. The actual room itself had many flaws, cosmetically. Broken handle on the bathroom door, some base boards ripped up, shower wasn't clean at all, furniture all dinged up and looked old and everything fixed to the wall was very weakly still on the wall - I was afraid to break anything accidentally because of how wobbly things were. Even the toilet was wobbly- you could see the caulk job they tried to do to keep it on the floor. I don't think I would stay here again but I guess it's not the worst place I've stayed. Hope they do some maintenance to the rooms that need it!

Yelp
I wanted to like this hotel but it was difficult for a couple reasons. The lobby seemed cool, but once I got to my room it was another scene. First and foremost if you do stay here, make sure you get a room that isn't facing the restaurant/bar. I'm on my second day here and have needed to rest during the early evening. Unfortunately I can't because they have different kinds of music every day. Yesterday it was a guitarist/singer and today is a DJ. Both were/are extremely loud. So loud that I didn't even want to be in my room, let alone rest or sleep. My room was ok, but the carpet and the spread on the bed had stains. I'm not crazy about dirty or stained carpets. It makes me wonder how clean they are. The shower worked, but seemed to be on its way out. I found it difficult to figure out how to get the water hot. The towels were thin and not very absorbent as well. I can honestly say the bed was comfortable, but that's about it. All in all, I think this hotel is not really for people that want to rest or sleep on a day off or for people on a business trip, but if you're here to party, this may be the hotel for you.

Yelp
One of the more nicer hotels. Not a luxury hotel. Hotel charges hotel fee and parking seperate. Staff was friendly, rooms are a little on the small size but still nice, no pool but they have a restaraunt, and outdoor lounge area which is nice.

Tiffany R.

Yelp
100% recommend. This was my first time to Portland and my first solo travel. The girl at the front desk was amazing, the room was perfect. The outdoor lounge area is huge. I felt so safe! My car was parked in a gated and locked underground parking spot. To get up to the rooms you need your room key, with the hotel front desk being open 24/7 this made me feel very secure. I bought some wine from them and drank it in the outdoor lounge, they provided a glass and wine opener. FYI they do have more fees then I'm used to, but with how inexpensive the hotel room was it is worth it! It's so artsy and so hip! When I come back to Oregon I will definitely be staying here again.

Yelp
Booked this place for three days during our Portland visit. This hotel is really nice on the inside and there is a lot of seating in the front as well as outside. There are also fire pits for you to enjoy at night. There is also Nel Centro, a restaurant & bar, connected to the hotel, so it is almost always lively. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. There is a gear shed where you can borrow things like cameras, bikes, video games, and even fishing poles. There is also a room referred to as the Colosseum that is part game room, part event space. It has giant connect 4, pool, darts, and many other activities for you to do. The room that we stayed in was very nicely decorated and felt very clean and modern. We didn't really like the sliding door because there's not a lot of privacy. Other than that, we had a great time staying in this hotel!

Yelp
I stayed here for three nights in the month of April and I was very pleased with the service. The front desk employees are so kind and give great advice if you're new to the area! They recommended plenty of restaurants and attractions and I felt very welcome. The lobby is nicely decorated and there's a little snack bar / gift shop area where u can use your room credit to take home some souvenirs or buy a drink! There is a game room downstairs and outside there's fire pits with plenty of seating, great for hanging out. The location is great and walkable to all the touristy locations in town, and there's a Starbucks around the corner which is perfect for your morning coffee. The room was clean and organized and had a nice view of the street! I really enjoyed my stay here and will most likely stay here again if I return to Portland!

Yelp
I would not stay here again. The restaurant staff kept chatting with each other in the empty restaurant so they forgot to give us things. Keep in mind there were only 2 of us; not a giant full table. They charge $28 per night for parking in their murder basement. (Okay, no one actually murders there but it's very wet and cold and seems like a murderer is behind every giant pillar or stack of power tools) the bathroom is very narrow. There isn't a microwave although there is a small fridge. The toilet was slightly broken when we got there. There is tea and coffee offered in the lobby and the bed is comfy, the courtyard was pretty but that was about it for the positives. The hotel has a deal with the gym next door but it's a check in with the front desk and then you're able to go kind of deal. We didn't get a chance to take advantage because it felt uncomfortable to ask in the middle of the night. There was a huge incident on the first night of our stay; without too many details drugs, police, and screaming from another guest. It did not exactly lead the way to a relaxing stay. The phone was dead when we got in too so we weren't able to call the front desk. Luckily or not the neighboring room called because I guess it had been happening all night. I will not be back.

Socorro R.

Yelp
I booked for the top floor it was unavailable because the rooms from the third floor to the fifth floor the heaters were not working. They messed up on our reservation, we were staying two nights, not one night, but they were kind enough to fix that so that was great. They did not fix our bed yet they gave us clean towels though. The heater on the second day went out they gave me a bass heater and a thermal care healing pad to put in my back so I would feel heat , for reals come on, the baud heater threw nothing but cold air. It was wobbly and noisy. The guy that worked on Saturday night 11/25/23, offered this younger couple that check out was 12 but that he would let them stay 1or 2 o'clock in the afternoon, need to be fair and offer that to everyone we were not offered that nor we were told of the Jacuzzi exercise room and so on. Restaurant was excellent. The dining area was excellent.. the bathtub. When you step on it, you kind of felt like it was gonna go through lotta crackling.. I would still give it another try if they fix the heat and be more accountable.
