Even Midtown Manhattan Has Its Secrets

"Located in a nondescript Midtown building right by Penn Station is New York’s own Houdini Museum. Dedicated to the escape artist Harry Houdini, the museum is housed in the Fantasma magic shop. Take the elevator up to the fourth floor, and soon you’ll suddenly be surrounded by hundreds of objects from Houdini’s history. There are of course handcuffs and straitjackets, as well as impressive objects like his 1907 escape coffin from which he emerged in 66 minutes after it was secured with six inch nails (illustrations of the achievement line the wooden casket). Numerous framed photographs and posters line the wall, along with curiosities like an x-ray of the bullet in his hand. A cabinet displays some of the objects from Houdini’s career in debunking spiritualism which he saw as a misleading use of magic. In a corner is his last metamorphosis chest, and alongside is a plaster bust of the magician that once stood on his grave in Machpelah Cemetery in Queens.  The items are mainly from the private collection of Fantasma’s CEO Roger Dreyer. About two hundred objects are on display, with 1,500 in storage, so the exhibitions regularly change out to show different artifacts. The magic shop is actually right in the museum, so along with the fascinating display from the legacy of one of magic’s greatest figures you can try out tricks yourself and make some purchases to propel your own career in illusions.  Update as of June 2021: The museum is soon relocating to New Jersey." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The guy that helped us is awesome! He showed our son, who is just learning magic, several tricks, and explained them. We spent over an hour in the shop, watching, learning, admiring, and enjoying ourselves. They have some wonderful Houdini memoribila, and a cute, lop eared bunny named Trixie. They have books, collectibles, and magic supplies for sale, and their prices are excellent. The man that helped us has a great personally, and he blew our minds several times with his tricks. Note that they are moving soon. (Early December 2017)

I love all things related to metaphysics, magic, and lockpicking, so I’ve been wanting to check this place out for a while. Best thing it’s free. So much history and artifacts, including old posters, photos, and some of Houdini’s locks. It’s a small museum combined with a magic store in the back.

It's not a very big museum - it's just a single room - but they have some fascinating artifacts from Houdini's life on display. It's free entry if you just want a look around for a while, or you can pay $10 for a guided tour, even if there is only you! It was fantastic to get a private tour from the knowledgeable and friendly staff member. You also get a small discount off the magic shop items from the magic shop operating in the same room after you go on the tour, if that interests you.

Nice look at the life of Harry Houdin! Check out the authentic magic items and pick up a souvenir. Got me some cool trick card deck. And some mouth steamers. Thanks to the Guy at the counter for showing me a couple cool tricks. Sorry I was a bit hung over lol.

The Houdini Museum is a tiny yet informative museum showcasing an impressive array of props Harry Houdini actually used, as well as letters and a few items from other magicians. It's located on the fourth floor of what looks like an upscale apartment building that lists no name, only the street number, so you'll need to pay attention when arriving. Everything is inside one room and behind the counter is Fantasma Magic where they sell magic-themed games and the like. The staff are super friendly and actually showed me some magic tricks! I absolutely recommend this museum and since admission is free, it's literally a priceless experience! P.S. flash photography is permitted so shoot away!

Finding it's location is part of the fun. If you love magic & or Houdini...it's a must. The exhibit was extraordinary ...they have his actual manacles that were used in his performances on display & so much more! The young man on duty did a ton a card tricks for us. Very fun place to visit !
