"The complex decoration of La Casa de los Azulejos, or the House of Tiles, is a lasting record of Mexican art and history. The building’s facade is covered in blue, white, and yellow tile; its interior features a mural by famed Mexican painter José Clemente Orozco; and its glass-ceilinged atrium contains stone pillars, murals, and a fountain. These lushly decorated walls have witnessed a microcosm of Mexican history, housing noblemen and workers’ organizations before evolving into the most beautiful branch of a chain restaurant. From the 17th through 19th centuries, the building served as a residence for the Counts of the Valley of Orizaba and their families. There are competing legends about its famous tiles, which appeared around 1735. One holds that the tiling was the result of a dispute between a father and his son, who partied too much. According to the story, when the young man’s father told him he was good for nothing, he cleaned up his act, grew his fortune, and covered his family house with tiles to prove to his papa that he was at least good for making beautiful buildings. An alternate explanation holds that a countess was inspired by the buildings in Puebla and covered her family mansion with the region’s traditional tiles. In the late 19th century, the building left aristocratic family hands and became the Jockey Club, home to elite intellectuals, and then the workers’ organization Casa del Obrero Mundial, or World Worker’s House. In 1917, capitalism prevailed, and the building was bought by Sanborns, a budding restaurant and retail chain founded by two brothers from California. It remains a Sanborns to this day. Nowadays, visitors can pause outside the tiled facade to snap a selfie or linger at Sanborns’ full-service restaurant. Sanborns’ hefty menu—decorated with the same peacocks that dot the atrium’s opulent walls—includes steak, hamburgers, and Mexican classics such as tacos, pozoles, and molletes. Among the other architectural marvels of Mexico City’s Centro Histórico, La Casa de los Azulejos remains a storied meeting place for the tourists, locals, and intellectuals. Know Before You Go The restaurant is a five-minute walk from the Bellas Artes metro station." - notoriousFIG, Xavixavir, Monsieur Mictlan, johncterryc, Reina Gattuso, pml33040

Google
Nice restaurant offering many typical Mexican dishes that tasted very good. The whole architecture and decor are worth making a stop to admire and taking pictures. There might be some waiting time since it is located on a popular street and fun fact to notice inside is you will have the feeling that the building is tilting.

Google
This is a one of a kind dining experience. The restaurant is in a historic and beautiful 300 year old building with ornate murals and tile work. The food was good and not as expensive as it could have been. The staff was very friendly and nice to me as I mumbled my order in my slow and awkward Spanish.

Google
We had reservations, which was very helpful. They accommodated a large group. Nice view outside and food was good but from a vegetarian (no onions) almost no options.

Frankie Lam

Google
Enjoy the view of building and setup, food is overpriced tourist drunk. Service also poor, when you start speaking English most staff will try to avoid you. If I can give zero on food and service I would do that. Atmosphere would be 4-5 stars.

Google
Beautiful building with a well-preserved facade and interiors. Revolutionaries like Emilio Zapata and intellectuals used to frequent here. Restaurant Sanborn which is a well-known chain has reliable food, not necessarily mind-blowing. Service was good too. Picturesque area all over.

Google
To be honest, this was a very disappointing lackluster experience. The food is mediocre at best. The structure of this once illustrious building is breathtaking, but that pretty much is it. This is the kind of establishment that has relied on it's lineage for far too long and has become complacent over the years. Our food took too long (2hrs), our server was rude, and there was no care given to the matter.

Casa de los Azulejos in Mexico City captivates with its blend of historic charm and culinary excellence. Carolina's impeccable service enhanced the dining experience, while each dish celebrates Mexico's gastronomic heritage. With its enchanting ambiance, it's an unforgettable ode to Mexican culture and cuisine. Gratitude to Carolina and the team.

The house of tiles is a gem hidden behind the veil of construction sheathing. The three story courtyard, live music spectacular ambiance is worth the small wait. Pro tip ascend tge stairs to be seated quicker and enjoy a choice of dining rooms.

Yelp
Excellent food and a really beautiful building. I recommend the Enchiladas Suizas with the verde sauce. There was a long wait to get indoor seating but I was able to be seated immediately on their patio.

Anne S.

Yelp
Food was okay Service was slow but okay Ambiance is the reason to eat here! This place is beautiful! We stopped to see the building, and I'm so glad we did. Inside was beautiful but packed. We ate lunch on the not crowded patio outside, which let us see inside and take our time taking photos but enjoy the weather! The deserts looked amazing! The juices were fresh and tasty!

Tulina S.

Yelp
Food-3.5 Ambience-5 Service-5 What a beautiful setting for a restaurant. A heritage building with live music and hostesses dressed in traditional costume. Loved the atmosphere. Food was a little hit or miss as it's difficult to communicate.. but we got a variety of dishes- my chicken torta was nothing special, the chicken on skewer was the best dish- refried beans was delicious and the complimentary bread and chips was a nice touch. There was a long line for the restrooms, but they were clean and well maintained.

Richelle T.

Yelp
If you are not sure where to eat while in Mexico city. You can try going to Sanborns. Not only do they have a variety of food to choose from, but they also have a store.

Rigo S.

Yelp
I got up and walked to the Sanborns and it's a must if your visiting the location is prime and the customer service is excellent everything tasted great and with great flavor we went for Breakfast

Vineela G.

Yelp
Ambiance: Ambience is the reason we get drawn to this place. The restaurant is in the historic and beautiful tile house. Every wall is a beauty. Service was surprisingly fast given the scale of this restaurant. Food: chicken fajitas were the best of all the food we tried here. Chicken taquerias, tacos were okay. Grilled chicken felt very rubbery. The pasta was good too.

Greta M.

Yelp
Lugar muy bonito pero para comer la verdad hagan caso a los demás comentarios, comida nada rica y cara. Frijoles parecen ser de lata. No recomiendo.

Boon C.

Yelp
Historic place restaurant. It is beautiful interior. If you come to Mexico City historic district, this is the restaurant to try. This restaurant locate in famous pedestrian street that connects the Central Park and the palace. The restaurant has a lot to explore. Two floors. The courtyard has a lot of table. We got a seat on second floor close to window overlooking the street below. I have pecan crust fried sole fish. It was delicious. It come with rice and salad. My wife have the local famous mole. The chocolate sauce is very interesting. The sauce is on the enchilada. Wait for food is long. Atmosphere is very nice. Service is so so.

Elena A.

Yelp
I had the best morning here for brunch! My family gave me the amazing historical experience about this beautiful building, we added our name to the waitlist, it was about 30 mins for the upper floor, I had time to them walk around and see the whole building, they had the open doors on balconies, so I was able to get to see the many different views. They finally called our name, sat us by the bar area and it was perfect, not too crowded and my food was delicious, best coffee and I ordered a juice, watermelon and OJ . Can't wait to return to Mexico City, and will definitely be back at this restaurant... The coffee was so good, I purchased a bag of coffee to bring home.

Yelp
The ambiance: murals, fountain, giant Christmas piñata, blue tiles, and piano player are the only reason to come here. Service was fine, not sure if it was just really busy, but our meals took ages. Ordered a pina colada that didn't make it to our table till the second round of beers. So a lot of time sitting around enjoying that ambiance. Tortilla chips and salsas were good, especially the green salsa 7/10. My daughter had the chilaquiles and they were cold, so she didn't eat them. At that point, can you really send it back for heating up when you've already waited ages? 2/10 I had the Chile Norteno off the seasonal menu. It sounded good, but was also not warm enough, and came ten minutes after everyone else's meals. 5/10 Our friend had the cochinita pibil which got the job done. 7/10 My husband had steak tacos, they were served very plain, and he had to wait ten minutes for his side of beans, 7/10. Our waitress was nice, and comped us some guacamole which was good. I have fond memories of Sanborns which made me insist on paying a visit. Next time I would just get coffee and cake, that they do very well.

Age V.

Yelp
We went there to eat enchiladas Suiza and it's one of those decadent, heavy dishes that you can only eat once in a while because you don't exactly feel healthy when you're eating it. The flavor is delicious though, so you plow right through it. The service was okay, but not very attentive. In the end, my review is solely based off the enchiladas and the price is reasonable as well.

Sandy B.

Yelp
I don't care what my meal looks like or tastes as I would come here just to bask in the vintage setting. Its incredible! From what I understand it was a palace at one time prob around 1679 or so. Service was a little meh but waitress must have been tired as this place stays open until midnight and this was the shank of the evening close to 11pm. Our food was quite good. It seemed pretty basic and no frills for my spagetti dish which really was Alfredo sauce with no Parmesan or anything to give it eye appeal such as a garnish. My partner had a very substantial dish of a Mexican standard enchiladas w lotsa red sauce and carmelized red onions. He washed it down w a Sangria like I've never seen before in the USA very unusual and pretty. The bill was surprisingly reasonable and we kept wondering how our bill could be so low in such a great place, and how do they afford to keep the doors open. We ended up closing the place down as we wandered around marveling at the size of this outstanding antique structure turned restaurant and shopping store. Check it out, its in a great part of town w lots of history and great old structures near by and some upscale shopping.

Eduardo C.

Yelp
One of the best enchiladas I ever have every time I go to Mexico City I will try this place that ambience is so gorgeous. Stunning like all the time to go in there service always excellent one of my best place to all when I going to Mexico City thumbs up.

Audrey L.

Yelp
I came here with family for breakfast when visiting Mexico City. The restaurant had a ton of seating but was also very busy. We had maybe a 20-30 minute wait which wasn't bad since they have little shops below in the same building. We had a group of ten so it took a little bit to order. I love that they had people serving sweet breads from carts throughout the restaurant. Unfortunately my food took longer than everyone else's to come out, but again we were a large party so it's bound to happen. But once the food got there, it was really good. I'd definitely come back here next time I'm in Mexico City!

Anita L.

Yelp
Come here to take in the beautiful structure. Walk around the building and see the stunning architecture. Photos and videos don't really do it justice. However, don't stay for the food. We went there to look around and I didn't have any intentions of eating there, but altitude sickness got me as we climbed the stairs so we ended up getting a table and sitting down. Our server Angelica was lovely and patient with us. I wanted some soup but none was available that day. I opted for posole. My son ordered a chicken mole and his gf, a chicken salad. Sadly, the posole was flavorless, the mole was so overly sweet, and the salad was just iceberg lettuce with a few pieces of grilled chicken, fruit and raisins. Absolutely do not recommend eating here. I have no regrets. It was beautiful to sit in this environment and taking in a wonderful bit of history. Food was 2 stars at best, an extra star for Angelica.

Nathan U.

Yelp
Came for dinner and was pleased with the food, Clean establishment and good ambiance. Amicable staff, fairly quick service. Green pozole had great flavor, maiz was soft and chicken was moist and suave. Cold tea with fruit was good (chamomile/manzanilla), not sweet at all. Paid parking nearby.

Suzie L.

Yelp
Iconic restaurant with a lovely atmosphere We had a wonderful lunch at this former blue and white tiled palace. The menu has something to please everyone, the food is good, the prices are reasonable and the service is friendly. It's a lovely place to linger and escape from the busy Mexico City afternoon heat - the decor is gorgeous and there was a violinist. We left with a great deal of reluctance!!

Victoria L.

Yelp
Enjoyed 3 breakfast plates! I had the mole omelet and it was incredible. The service was quick. You get one juice and coffee or tea with your meal! The space is beautiful, be sure to walk upstairs to see the bathrooms and upper area!

Pris M.

Yelp
This place was a huge disappointment, after arriving to our hotel from a long flight, we were starving and this hotel was a 4 min walk from our hotel. It was around 9:30pm (they close at 2am). They asked if we wanted to sit on the 1st or 2nd floor. We choose the second floor for the views. We were seated immediately, but after almost 25 minutes of being ignored and no one even taking our beverage order we decided to leave. We decided to give it another try the next day for dinner. This time we sat in the first floor, the waiter was nice and took our order. I'm giving this restaurant 2 stars because of how architecturally beautiful it is, it's beautiful from the inside and the history behind it. When our food arrived everything was bland and plain. My daughter ordered fettuccine pasta, my husband the enchiladas suizas and I orders the lechuga d pollo en mole. The pasta had no taste and the enchiladas had what tasted like fake cheese and the sauce was watered down. The rice from my plate tasted weird and the chicken was hard. I don't recommend this spot at all and it's over priced. We did get pictures in the patio which over looks Bella's Arte which was nice but that's it.

Tracy M.

Yelp
Disliked all 4 dishes we ordered it's just not the Mexican food we are used to eating, more on the sweet side then the spicy food and chips and salsa n Are not part of your meal

Mister F.

Yelp
Food is just ok but the space and service are wonderful. I always come here when in Mexico City. It's a must see.

Robert V.

Yelp
We usually make an annual pilgrimage to eat here. The place is beautiful baroque architecture, long history, and great food! The food was good as usual, we started with an order of molletes, I had the Enchiladas Suizas, my wife had ordered the Huevos Guerreros. On this particular visit they were extremely understaffed which resulted in my wife never receiving her meal, she ended up sharing my plate and canceling hers. This however is unusual, seems related to COVID.

Maria M.

Yelp
A friend recommend it this place, it didn't disappoint us. If you are looking for a light breakfast or light menu at a great price. This is the place.

Deborah H.

Yelp
The service was fine. We ate outside on the patio. The food was mediocre at best and very expensive. My husband fell I'll after his lunch. Do not eat here.

Leticia H.

Yelp
Hermoso lugar un clásico de la Ciudad de México con una rica comida tradicional pedimos unas ricas enchiladas y enfrijoladas, muy bien servidas acompañadas de fruta y jugo

J G.

Yelp
Food was horrible , the soup was burned and when mentioned to the server it was just ignored . It was 3 of us and one had to wait for juice about 30 min because they were making it . But that wasn't mentioned at the beginning otherwise We would have changed our order

Betancourt E.

Yelp
A place worth visiting right in the heart of the old historic Mexico City downtown area . It's an old school department type of store which sells electronics, toys , nuts, baked goods, books and even has a pharmacy. The restaurant was why I mainly visited , the food was good, fresh and prepared pretty fast when one considers how busy this place is . The service was very attentive and above all the aesthetics of this place are very cool while you're sitting there eating your meal, I sat up on the third floor and had stunning views of the palacio de Bella's artes which was worth it all in itself , a beautiful and historic restaurant, building with lots to see . I had a grand old time and will be back over and over again.

Sara S.

Yelp
The house of times is awesome! But the restaurant itself is not amazing.. it felt like a tourist trap eventhough the courtyard where i ate was filled with locals Food was far from exceptional and not really worth the energy to get there And the place was packed like a cafeteria and it was loud I can understand the place had a reputation for being around so long but there is nothing special about it food wise or ambiance wise

Sam P.

Yelp
This branch in Historic tile house can get busy but you they have plenty of room and relatively quick turnaround so you don't have to wait any longer than 30 minutes. We tried two appetizers and three entries : our favorite was the Cochinita Pibil tacos

Franklin M.

Yelp
I love coming to this historic building to eat inside the courtyard area. The place is amazing but this time around the service was lacking. We arrived for dinner and the three of us were seated within minutes. But while I took a look around and seen the frown on many customers waiting for service or their food I decided let's leave because it will be a long time before we order and who knows how long the food would take.

Zamara A.

Yelp

Max D.

Yelp
Great place to eat. Yes Im a tourist. Great service. Fair price. Live music. Ambiance. Killer cappuccino. Would go back. We went on a Monday morning and no wait. Felt lucky.

Gabriela H.

Yelp
Traveled to Mexico City during a pandemic. A few friends had recommended this restaurant for brunch. Due to my jet lag I arrived almost at 2pm. Before I entered the building, my temperature was taken and shoes had to be wiped down. Once inside I felt like I was at the Disneyland of Tile. The building was magical and could feel the history of the building and restaurant as I walked through the building to get to the restaurant. Once I arrived to the hostess the hostess sat us down pretty quickly. The waitress was quick and attentive to take our beverage order. We scanned the code taped onto the table to review the menu. I ordered the carne asada plate with two eggs, potatoes, fresh fruit and a coffee. The coffee was watered down which was disappointing or maybe it was my jet lag. I did ask for a stronger coffee and the waitress made note of it and never returned back. The carne asada was well cooked and tasty. The fruit was pretty basic. To make the ambiance more intimate a violinist was playing in the restaurant. Seating was available on the first and second floor. The best way I can describe this place was like a two story villa with murals and beautiful tile throughout the restaurant with antique decor. Once you left the restaurant you could walk around the building and shop at the bakery which had a large variety of pastries and cakes. There was also a mini barnes & noble as you exit the building. (It's not a barnes and noble but still cute book/toy store). There were other small business set up with variety of merchandise for sale. The architecture of this building was phenomenal. If only the walls could talk. overall, I'm so glad I visited and look forward to returning.

Chito M.

Yelp
When you walk into the restaurant you don't feel welcomeed and the service was not good at all. The food was ok.

Susan L.

Yelp
Feels like dining I'm a museum of tiles, indeed. This place is beautiful and vibrant, servers are very friendly, food and beverage is great at reasonable, I would prefer upstairs next time.

Thien H.

Yelp
The main dining room is so adorable. If it's your first time, don't let them seat you in the weird, back area. The food was alright. It wasn't the best versions of the dishes we had on this trip, but I would still return or bring friends here. We went for brunch and it was perfect because the dining area was very nice and bright. There are additional counters for goods for sale (chocolates, phone accessories, etc.). It's an interesting, old school restaurant/department store concept. Fyi, there are other Sanborns in the city, but they are not all this cute with a dining room/restaurant.

David T.

Yelp
What an interesting and fun place to visit for lunch. Right across the street from the Art Museum with a history as the "House of Tiles" It Is currently a Sanborns department store with a restaurant in the courtyard and on the second floor. We ate on the second floor and thoroughly enjoyed the ambience, the food, and the service. As you are walking through the Historic District, I would highly recommend visiting and if you have time for breakfast or lunch, eating at the restaurant. (Also a good place to stop for a clean bathroom on the way up the stairs to the second floor).

Andrew K.

Yelp
Not only is La Casa de los Azulejos (The House of Tiles) amazing to look at from outside but the restaurant within dishes out some incredibly delicious traditional Mexican food. Pictured are their Tacos de Pollo and Carne Asada plates. With each dish comes a delicious side of Guacamole that's fresh, expertly seasoned and has a great kick of heat with each bite. Also included are Refried Beans that go perfectly with the table chips. Overall, a great dining experience between the food, the decor and the live music by the house violinist.

Carolina S.

Yelp
My co worker had told me about La Casa de Los Azulejos. From the outside the building is stunning! There's all these tiny little blue and white tiles. It reminded me of something you would see in small towns of Italy. Peeking in the restaurant looked cafeteria like. My cousin wanted to walk in through a different entrance. There was a strange mini department store that sold everything from jewels to toys. And then I spotted it. Another entrance. Another restaurant. What is this little secret?!!? There is a stunning restaurant in the middle of this building. You would never know by walking past and being fooled by the cafeteria space. The walls are hand painted and there is live music and a piano. I was instantly smitten with the space. The host explained I had to wait for a couple tables ahead. We only waited like 15 minutes before we were seated. They have baskets of bread on the table to start you off. The menu is a little meat heavy. I was beginning to figure out the theme of Mexico City and it's a four letter word called M-E-A-T. At least, my cousin found the "Chile Relleno"! I wanted to try something authentic. The dish did not disappoint. It was decadent, cheesy and the sauce was extra spicy. My cousin's daughter ordered a hot dog and I loved that the chefs added olive eyes and a tongue. It looked like a little snake! I'm glad to see there was still a little bit of funny this fancy place. The bathrooms were up a level. I walked one more floor and you can look down at the dining area. Truly a beautiful space and experienced. We also escaped the pouring rain. I highly recommend stopping in while you are hitting all your tourist to do list downtown.

Manuel Ángel C.

Yelp

Abril P.

Yelp
Service here is really bad and the restaurant is very noisy as well. However This Sanborns worths the visit just because is "la casa de los azulejos" . The restaurant sitting area is where the patio of this house used to be . It's surrounded by beautiful balconies and decorated with chandeliers . There's two original murals on the stairs as well. As far as the food , this is just your regular Mexican chain restaurant food, not the best but not bad . I like their caldo tlalpeño, enchiladas Sanborns and huevos motileños , you can't go wrong with those. They have a special menu from time to time featuring typical dishes from other states. This time we order their flautas from that menu. They were huge and big enough for two .

Valerie W.

Yelp
The food here is good, but as others have mentioned, you come here to experience the AMAZING setting... Truly one of the most beautiful buildings I have seen, inside and out!! I honestly don't remember what we ate!! I've been here before, but mostly just to browse/gawk at the wonderful tiles, beautiful decorations, and atmosphere that just screams "old world Mexico!!" I wanted this to be our first meal, and it certainly didn't disappoint!! Super service, very reasonable prices, gorgeous holiday decorations, and live holiday music being played on the grand piano in the corner. What more could you ask for?? There are many wonderful choices in this area of the city, but to feel like you're eating in a cultural and historical institution, this is the place!! Que aproveches!!

Cassandra H.

Yelp
Can't speak to the busy restaurant side. My friends and I opted for the cosy casual cafe side to the right. This is the "grande dame" Sanborns with beautiful blue tile on the exterior. Delicious sweet breads/pastries and decent coffee. A nice way to spend time before visiting the Palace of Fine Arts.

Cesar C.

Yelp
Please don't ever eat here, food was ok at best .The service was god awful, 45 mins just to take our order, and that was after my 90 year old grandmother went to get our waitress. Food came out in 4 different waves 10-15 mins apart. When the waitress finally came out the ketchup, I had already finished my food. I never write bad reviews, but please save your self some irritation and eat anywhere else but here.

Alyssa V.

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful building with the history of its tile. The inside view of the restaurant makes you feel like you're in a special place especially with the violinist playing throughout your breakfast. There are many breakfast options and the Pan dulce with coffee was the best way to start my morning. The Pan was very very soft. The food was okay, nothing too extravagant to the taste but good if you're looking for something simple and fast with a great view and experience.

Ryan B.

Yelp
This old building has much character and has stood the test of time. Still a very useful building as it is a Sanborns department store and restaurant. While you could have a better meal elsewhere, the building is best seen (IMO) while having breakfast at the Sanborns Restaurant.

Christine L.

Yelp
I agree with other Yelp reviews that the food here is okay and may not be worth spending a meal on. Out of all the food I had in Mexico City, my dinner here stood out the least. However what was memorable was the lovely architecture and magical ambiance. The interior is so beautiful and during our dinner, a pianist played romantic pieces that echoed into the high ceilings. The waitresses here are dressed traditionally and with the music, it almost seemed like they were waltzing across a ballroom. It was truly magical! The food though was less so - we had the pepitos and enchiladas. The enchiladas were filled with cheese, then covered with more cheese and tomato sauce. The pepitos were simply mini-sandwiches. It lacked the depth and complexity of flavors that our other meals in Mexico had. Despite the food, I personally thought it was still worth dining here because I had the chance to sit and soak in the beauty here.

Emily W.

Yelp
I've had mixed experiences here. Overall I really like the breakfast offerings (hot/cold chocolate, coffee) but am less impressed by the mains (enchiladas suizas). It's definitely an interesting spot to stop by to see a weird department store / restaurant combination while in Mexico City - but more of a one-time visit.

Jim H.

Yelp
We had a tasty dinner here tonight at Sanborns. The food was delicious & the service could not have been more efficient, kind & welcoming. I'd love to return here someday. The building is an historic treasure! We toured the inside of the building after our meal & it really is a beautiful place. Many Instagramers take photos from the outside of the building and gladly post their results. This is definitely a special place for many reasons & for all of our ages.

Yelp
WARNING: pickpockets! Use the bag hangers and keep your bags/purses/backpacks in clear view at all times! Thankfully, this is the first time in my traveling life that something has been stolen from me... but it happened. At 12:00 noon in broad daylight with hundreds of people around. I sling my over the shoulder book bag on the seat back. I was sitting close to the piano. There were other diners at 90 degrees to my chair back and my lunch guest was sitting facing the other way, 90 degrees to my right. He had a clear view of the bag. Whoever swiped the bag had to have done it at precisely the right moment when we were watching the waiter sneeze. It's the only time we were distracted enough for us not to notice something. That passage behind those seats is not traveled by people. It's between the piano and the seating area. So only the pianist, the servers for those three tables ... and somebody desperate and bold enough to jump on precisely the right moment could gain access. The management said there is nothing they can do. Cameras, according to their security chief, are not permitted inside the dining area by Mexican law. They didn't even offer to pay for our meal. Obviously, Sandborns is what it is in terms of a restaurant. But La casa de Los Azuelos is popular with tourists. Enjoy your meal, but DO NOT THINK YOUR BELONGING ARE SAFE JUST BECAUSE THE AMBIANCE IS PLEASANT.
