I went to The House on the River on a Saturday afternoon for their high tea experience. What a lovely afternoon! We had a table on the second floor overlooking the river, and the tables are set with pretty and ornate tea sets.
When you arrive they bring you the box of tea that contains about seven or eight different teas. You can choose from various tea types including black, green, and herbal teas. They are single serve packets, so different people at the table can try different types, and you're more than welcome to try more than one. You're also able to order cocktails in addition to the tea if you so choose. The tea is served with milk, lemon, and white and brown sugar cubes. I often enjoy honey with my tea as well, which was not served alongside the tea, but I'm not sure if honey is an element of the traditional English practice of afternoon tea.
The tea is accompanied first by a small cup of tomato soup topped with crunchy croutons, and then the tower of tea sandwiches and baked delicacies is brought out! There's are different tea sandwiches - chicken coronation, cream cheese with cucumber, egg salad, and salmon with dill cream cheese. All we're excellent, but my favorite is the cream cheese and cucumber.
For the baked goods level of the tower, I really enjoyed the blueberry scone. It's small and soft, not hard and crumbly like scones can often be. The jam was also delicious, very fruity and tart. Sadly I was pretty disappointed with the croissant. My friend I went with, who has done the tea experience here before, told me initially that the croissants were served fresh and warm, but the ones we got were pretty hard and did not seem fresh at all. That was truly the only negative of the whole experience!
We ended with a couple little dessert bites and cocktails. The service was great and the servers were super friendly and attentive! They always made sure our tea pot was full with hot water. The whole experience (minus the cocktails, they're extra) costs $45. This is a great and unique experience for a beautiful Saturday afternoon on the river. I would definitely recommend this tea experience in particular, and would return to the restaurant for lunch or dinner sometime as well.
