My mom flew in from California just in time for brunch. I had seen The HOWE when googling Dog Friendly Places and it looked like a fun place. So, we stopped in for brunch.
The staff is super friendly and welcoming. Love that. We got Mimosa's that were beautifully priced and worth every penny!
The one star is for the food. Clearly, most of it is not freshly made. My boyfriend got a vegan burger and said it was one of the blandest burgers he had ever had and did not finish it. This is someone who inhales food in 3 bites. My friend got a basic breakfast, eggs, bacon, and bread. The bread was hard, and she said it tasted like it had been frozen and then toasted. She also said for something so basic, it was also bland.
Now, I got the Sopes Benedict. I am Latina. I know Sopes. I've made them. I received my Sopes, and i couldn't cut through them with a steak knife. I could not bite through them. They were clearly frozen, and then over toasted. I stopped trying to eat them and returned them to kitchen and refused anything else.
The waitress apologized to me, which was nice, and gave me a credit off my bill but then had the audacity to tell me, "This is how Sopes are usually made."
For anyone who gets the Sopes and has a tough time cutting through them, THEY ARE OVER COOKED AND NOT EDIBLE. Masa/SOPES has a soft chewy consistency, with a slight crisp on the bottom.
Please do not continue to push this idea that you have to strain hand muscles to get through Sopes and tell people this is your norm. It's bad business and insulting to a cultural food.
